This is the Mariners Postcast.
Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners.
Part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day.
I don't care how it happens.
A win is a win, guys.
Even if the twins tried everything they could possibly do to hand it to you,
which is exactly what happened.
A win is a win.
And, you know, in a game you absolutely had to win.
because if you lost the series leading into the trade deadline,
there would be major question marks about what to do.
Maybe not even question marks, probabilities,
and the probability would be to sell.
That could still happen.
Definitely if you end up losing tomorrow,
and even if you win tomorrow,
that could absolutely still happen.
But you just enough to win this game.
You get three runs early,
then you do nothing for, what, six innings?
And then find a way to get things going.
going in the ninth inning.
There's a lot about this game that shows why the Mariners are in the position that they are.
But at the end of the day, you get the win against the team that you're fighting for in the wildcard race right now.
So tomorrow's a big game as well.
We'll definitely be kind of looking forward a little bit in the postcast here today.
But we'll start by talking about this one.
A 4-3 win for the Mariners.
They moved to 54 and 58 on the season.
Logan Gilbert was excellent through four.
And then the Logan Gilbert thing happens where innings five, six, and seven.
If he goes that far, which he did today, he does not show nearly the amount of dominance that he showed in the first four innings.
And I just, I don't know what it is, man.
I know most pitchers have trouble with, you know, the third time through the order, all that stuff.
But it seems like he especially, there's a bit, it's very much like Brian Woolworth.
at home versus Brian Wool in the road, right?
You expect there to obviously be some differences when you pitch in a home ballpark,
but the gap is just way bigger than it needs to be.
And that's what Logan Gilbert is through four innings.
He looks like one of the best pitchers in baseball.
And then all of a sudden he just doesn't find it.
I don't know what it is.
Maybe it's an efficiency thing.
Maybe it's his reliance too much on strikeouts.
I don't know, but it's something that the Mariners, I think, a little bit of an underrated part of their struggles this year is the lack of a true ace.
And I think Logan would probably be one of the first guys you'd look at to be that guy.
But it is what it is.
You get the win.
Like I said, start with the start.
Logan Gilbert goes seven innings, five hits, three runs, all earned.
One walk, six Ks.
Two home runs, though.
in the two solo shots there.
But, you know, overall, his stuff looked really good.
And this is, again, this is such a Logan Gilbert start, right?
Where he looks really good.
Like, he could be back to the 2024 Logan Gilbert through four innings.
And then he has a couple bad pitches and a couple big moments.
And all of a sudden, it's three to three.
And I get it.
He didn't get a ton of offensive help today.
But honestly, if I'm looking at,
today's game specifically, if you think Logan Gilbert is the ace of the staff,
and if you want to really kind of rely on that moving forward,
three runs should be enough for an ace against this twins lineup that isn't great
by any stretch of the imagination.
It should be enough to get the win.
It eventually is, but not because the starter goes out and shoves,
and then you hold on later.
it's because you have to go and walk it off later in the game.
But you end up doing that, which is good.
Offensively, the Mariners, again, it's a tale of two different stories.
The same thing happened yesterday.
By the way, I want to quickly apologize for yesterday.
I had some stuff going on.
Just wasn't able to go live right after the game.
So if you guys were expecting an Anderson Hurst, just absolute meltdown,
which would have happened if I had gone live.
after that game. I apologize.
But hey, you know what?
Maybe me coming back today is kind of what turned things around, but it is what it is.
I still am curious because I don't know if you guys saw a lot of the reports are saying
that the Mariners are listening to offers for not only Emerson Hancock, but George Kirby and
Randy Rosarena as well, which is surprising to me.
And I'm not saying it's the wrong thing to do.
I'm not saying that that's just out of this world for them to do at this point.
But I am surprised that they are in the position that they're in, that they have to do that.
And they do have to do that.
Don't get me wrong.
But Randy today basically kind of carried this offense.
I mean, without him, you don't score much at all.
He scored three of the four runs.
two hits, a walk, a double that get things started to really kind of secure, not secure,
because you have to have that guy to hit it in.
But without Randy's double in that ninth inning, you don't win the game.
So I hope that this isn't the last series, at least, that we see of Randy or Rosarena
in a Seattle uniform, but it might be depending on what Jerry DiPoto and Justin Hollander,
a get offered and be you know want to do i don't again i there's two kind of ways of thought here you
can look at the standings and say hey you're what two and a half games out maybe two games out
at this point i haven't looked um since after today's game but it you can look at that and say
this team should be in by mode they should not be getting rid of their players um they're two
and a half out sorry uh but you can also look at just the
way they've been playing baseball and look and see that this is not a playoff team, let
alone a contending team. And especially the way the market is right now, you can get a decent
amount back for Randy Rosarana. Now, I don't just want to get him, get rid of him for nothing.
But that's definitely something where if you feel like you can really stockpile your team
and not a, you're not getting 19 year old prospects that are going to come up three or four
years from now. You're getting guys that help maybe this year, but especially next year and for years to
come after that. So for a guy that almost assuredly is not going to resign here. However,
if they do that and try and sell to this fan base to these players that they are trying to win this
year still, that this trade makes this team better in 2026, that's just a flat out lie. It's a flat out
lie because Randy Rosorraine is your best offensive player period end of story and I know Dom Canzon
technically is is probably a better hitter at this point has had a better hitting season but when
you add in Randy's stolen bases and his consistency throughout the entirety of the season there he's been
your best offensive player and trading that away for a already bad offensive team and then
trying to tell your fan base that you're that you're doing it to get better this year is just a
flat out lie. You are where you are because your stars haven't been good enough. Cal,
Naylor especially, Julio to some extent as well, it's just not good enough. It's not good enough.
And they would be stupid not to listen to offers for Randy or Rosarana at this point. But don't
try and sell it to me like you're getting better for this year. Like you're not punting on the season
because that's exactly what that would be at this point. But back to this game. It was good to see
a good, not only
Logan Gilbert first four innings
outing, but a really good Andres
Munoz outing, and we'll talk about that a little
bit here after the break. Randy Rosarena
does the work. Cole Young,
another really good day at the top of the order.
Two for five.
Him and Randy are kind of carrying this offense right now.
A little bit of Dom as well. Julio,
an underrated day as well,
goes one for three, but two walks,
including driving in
the first run of the game and the first
inning.
Weston Wilson needs to get off
this team. It's pretty embarrassing.
Colt Emerson might be time to send
him down.
Walking Rob Reff Stutter to get to
Cole Young is quite a choice by the twins.
And then going to the weird four in-field
formation is also quite a choice.
But 0 for 5 for Cal Raleigh today, guys,
with 3Ks. I know he gets the walk-off.
But man, alive, does he still
look completely lost at the plate?
You're not going anywhere if that guy's not figuring it out at some point this season.
So, I mean, it's hard to get too overly excited about a walk-off win in this point in the season
just because there's still so many signs that this team just isn't good, guys.
And there's rumors that they, the front office agrees.
So let's take a quick break.
We'll come back.
We'll discuss the unsung hero of the day.
We'll discuss maybe a couple ideas to do at the deadline.
I'm not a huge like trade rumors topic guy, but it's the big story at this point of the season
because, you know, the Mariners are in kind of a weird spot.
They could still absolutely tell themselves that they're in this and standings-wise,
they are.
But if you look at the way they're playing baseball, I don't think you can really lie to yourself that much.
So let's come back.
Let's discuss a little bit more on the Mariners Postcast after a very big, as,
kind of dejected as I sound, a very big four to three win for your Seattle Mariners to even the series
against the Minnesota Twins. We'll be right back with more on the Mariners Postcast.
A big thank you to our friends at Amazon for this limited break. This back to school season,
spend less on your kids with Amazon. We all know how crazy the back to school shopping experience can be.
It starts with a few items on the list. And then suddenly you're shopping for supplies, clothes,
lunch year tech, and about 10 other things you didn't see coming, it adds up super fast. And when it's 9 p.m.
the night before school starts and somebody suddenly remembers they need folders,
notebooks, markers,
and apparently 12 other things that nobody mentioned until right now,
nothing gets the heart rate up quite like emergency school shopping.
I'm convinced Primes deliver tomorrow before 7 a.m.
feature was created exclusively for parents in this moment.
I am not quite there yet with my little one,
but in a few years we will be.
And my God, will I be glad that there's that feature available on Amazon Prime?
and you bet your bottom dollar.
I'll be looking at Amazon Prime for my back-to-school shopping.
So remember with Amazon's low back-to-school prices,
spend less on your kids,
because every dollar you don't spend on them is a dollar you haven't spent on them.
Because let's be honest, you will eventually shop back to school at Amazon
and spend less on your kids.
Welcome back, Manor's Postcast.
My name is Anderson Hurst.
I'm live from my new place.
I know you guys have probably.
we noticed a couple different backgrounds as of late, but we've been back and forth. I bought a new
place in the last like month or so and we've been trying to get things moved in and everything,
which is one of the reasons why I wasn't live yesterday, so I apologize for that one. But
I'm glad to be back today and we'll be back tomorrow as well. Hopefully breaking down a
Mariners series win at this time tomorrow. But at this point, it's an even series between the
Mariners and the Twins. 54 and 58 on the season. You're still third.
in the ALS, but you're only two and a half games out.
By the way, new ALS leading team Houston Astros.
I didn't want to be the one to say it, but I kind of have to.
When are they going to die?
I just, I don't know, man.
They're the boogeyman.
They just keep appearing.
They're like a cockroach.
You can't kill them every single time.
You want them to be dead.
They're not dead.
And you keep finding them at the worst times.
Let's get back to this game, though.
even though you were really good in the first two,
really good.
I mean,
you get the bases loaded with nobody outs and you score two runs.
So not really good.
But you do damage in the first inning.
And look,
you're not going to score four runs on every time you get the bases loaded.
So scoring two runs is not the end of the world.
I'm not going to complain super about that.
Julio gets the job done with an infield base hit.
And then a basis load of walk from Mitch Garver as well.
awful AVs from Cal Raleigh and Josh Naylor, by the way, in that moment because yikes,
they could not get it done.
And not just, you know, a hard out or a borderline strikeout, just feeble at bats.
And again, like those two guys, it's been so bad this year.
And that's probably reasons one and two why you are where you're at right now.
Then Randy a Rosarana makes it three zero in the second.
with a home run.
I hope that's not his last home run in a mariner uniform.
Logan Gilbert cruises through four,
but in the fifth inning,
Luke Kishel solo shot,
Trevor Larnick solo shot,
and then in the sixth inning,
and then in the seventh inning,
Brooks Lee doubles in,
sorry, he hits a double to lead off,
and then Karatini grounds out
to tie the game with Kishel on third.
It's three, three.
The Mariners hadn't gotten anything going offensively
for six straight innings.
And then the bottom of the eighth comes, sorry, top of the eighth.
It looks like the twins are about to take the lead.
Ryan Jeffers, singles,
and they get Trevor Larnick at second with one out.
There's a lot of stuff going on.
Cody Clemens finally strikes out.
And then they bring in Andres Munoz second and third,
two outs and he gets Royce Lewis to strike out.
Just an absolute big moment that a lot of people have been asking for for a long time
to use Munoz, not just in the ninth inning, but in other big spots as well.
And I don't know if it's literally just that it turned to August 1st.
And Dan Wilson all of a sudden decided, hey, I can do that now because it's August.
Whatever.
I'm glad that it happened, period, because it was the right move.
And it ended up working out in the Mariners' favor.
Good to see Munoz come up with a big pitch in that situation.
bottom eight west and wilson grounds out um the intentional walk rep rob refsneider uh to get to cole
young yes you heard that right the twins intentionally walked rob refsnyder to get to cole young
with a man on third in two outs yes um col yong ends up grounding out so i guess it works out which
is weird it's so weird uh ninth inning comes um munoz goes one two three
Oh, sorry, it doesn't go one, two, three.
You get the double play, excuse me.
Because the strikeout throwout, double play.
Great throw from Mitch Garver there.
Bottom nine is the big moment.
Randy a Rosa Raina lead off double.
That's probably the moment in this game, to be completely honest,
because without that lead off double,
it didn't seem like the Mariners were going to do anything.
And that's the thing, like stringing together hits or singles specifically
is so hard to do against big league pitching,
even just getting that extra base,
even if it's not to knock in a run, but to start the rally.
It makes it so much easier because then you get Randy the third on Dom Canzon's fly out.
They intentionally walk Julio to get to Cal Raleigh.
And Cal Raleigh, all he needs is to get the ball of the outfield.
He doesn't even do that and it just grounds out.
But Royce Lewis playing first base.
It's like one of his first games at first base.
They just converted him into a first basement and man alive.
He looked like a first time big league first baseman.
because the easy play is to just go home straight away.
There's a force out at home and then just get the ball back at first base.
And even if you don't get the double play, you stop the run from happening.
But he steps on first kind of and then they have to get the tag at home play.
And that is exactly what ends up losing the game for the Minnesota Twins.
But the Mariners will take it.
They absolutely will take it at this point.
It's a must win.
Because if you lose this game, man, there's stuff out.
happening tonight, tomorrow, Monday, all that stuff. So they at least, maybe it's prolonging the
inevitable here, but they at least can keep some sort of hopes alive that you can go and add at the
deadline instead of sell at the deadline, but we're still kind of waiting to see what their real
official move will end up being unsung hero of the day. I'm going to go Julio Rodriguez. I kind of
mentioned it earlier. He does get the ground, sorry, the single in the first inning to get the
run. It's always when you have bases loaded nobody out, it's always, you don't want to be the first
out because that kind of opens things up for the pitcher. You have the idea of, okay, now I just
need a double play once you get one out. So as long as you're able to keep things going with no
ounce as long as possible. And I know, yes, you would like to see Julio drive that baseball into the
outfield, right? But he still hits it hard and beats out the ground. It hits it so hard that it's
unable to be handled by the second baseman Brooks Lee. He beats it out, gets the run, gets Seattle on
the board to avoid catastrophe of the bases loaded nobody out, no run situation. Not just that.
He gets two walks today. That's the thing I'm highlighting with him. I hope that's a sign of things to come
because his overaggressive approach at the plate just hasn't worked this year.
I know that is what's given him success in the past,
but it just doesn't, it hasn't worked that much this year.
And the kind of really hot Julio that we have come to know and love during the July,
August, September month hasn't happened yet.
We're on August 1st now.
I hope it does.
But at this point, you don't see a ton of signs of it coming.
So maybe a slight tweak.
not a full-on swing change or anything like that.
It's a slight tweak of being a little more patient at the plate.
Let them come to you a little bit.
Then you can start hitting some mistake pitches.
I think we'll go a long way in helping Julio kind of get over the hump
and get to that hot end of the summer like we always know that he can do.
Player of the game, Randy Roserena, pretty simple.
Of course, all the reports right before the game saying that Mariners are listening to offers
for Randy Roserena.
I have people kind of mention to me on social media that he's interacting with fans more than he has before in the dugout today at the game.
You could tell maybe there was a little bit from the broadcast.
I don't know if you were watching on TV on the Mariners broadcast.
You heard a little bit of a dejected voice from Aaron Goldsmith when Randy hit his home run in the second inning.
I don't know if that's him getting over his sickness.
He did lose his voice during the Dodgers series, but maybe it's him knowing something that a lot of us don't.
at this point about a possible Randy trade.
I hope that's not the case.
I really don't because I still think there's something in the Mariners season this year.
I know it's responsible to listen to offers for impending free agents
and even non-imending free agents for if you're getting to get a haul in return
and something that can really help you for the future.
But it would really decimate this offense because he and Canzone and Cole Young
have been the only ones really doing anything all year long.
long and getting rid of your best offensive player or at least one of your best
offensive players for a team that's already terribly offensively would be a bad,
bad move. He's two for four today, three runs scored, a home run and a double,
a walk. This is just the Randy Rosa Rana experience, right? I know he's not great defensively.
I know. And I would like to see him at DH, but you could say that about so many other Mariners
players at this point. So we'll see. We'll see what ends up happening. I do think that
that, you know, something will be coming in the next couple days,
whether that is a rainy trade or maybe, you know, them saying that he's staying.
We'll see what ends up happening.
But in order, just back to today, Mariners get the win, four to three.
They're 54 and 58 on the season.
You can go and win a big series, believe it or not,
even as bad as everything feels right now, you can go and win the series tomorrow.
And being an okay spot and try and really grind and put together stuff,
you still have two months left in the season.
Go and do it.
And you kind of see where you're at because trade.
deadlines on Monday. Obviously, Ty and Colby will have all that coverage, of course.
And we'll talk to you guys after the game tomorrow. Again, my name is Anderson Hurst.
You've been listening to the Mariners Postcast. We'll talk to you after the game tomorrow.
Another 110 first pitch. Go, Mariner.
