Starting point is 00:00:04 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. I believe it was my good friend, Theodore Payne, who said, all they do is win, win, win no matter what. I believe I'm paraphrasing there. But man, oh man, another win for your Seattle Mariners. Mariners win 5 to 3.
Starting point is 00:00:36 Welcome to the locked on Mariners postcast. My name is Christopher Crawford. Anders, Hirst might join us in a little bit. Anderson, Anders, you can call him, just don't call him late for dinner. He might be joining us a little bit. If not, we'll go solo, dolo today and talk about another huge win for your Seattle Mariners that keeps them tied for first place in the American League West. For those of you who are new to the show, and yes, tie and cold.
Starting point is 00:01:04 Kobe, they go live every weekday and they talk to you about the big picture stuff. Anders and I just talk about the game that we just watched. Just the game we just watched. We break down the good, the bad, the ugly. And lately it's just been good. We'll talk about Brian Wu finally getting those 13 strikeouts or getting those double-digit strikeouts ending up with 13. We'll talk a little bit about scoreboard, you know, because I think this matters now more
Starting point is 00:01:34 than ever. That's probably a really obvious point, but it's true. It's absolutely true. The teams behind you, and they're all behind you, by definition, all playing a part in this stuff, and then we'll talk about the offense and offer an unsung hero. But let's start with the start, and let's start with Brian Wu. And Sinabon, you're right. Wu said 10 wasn't enough. He sure didn't. It sure wasn't, I mean, just a sensational effort. Everything but the second inning from Brian Wu was absolutely fan-tastic. Now, the second inning was frustrating. He gives up a home run to Joe Adele that would have been, if that's not a 30-for-30, or I'd be really curious to see what part that doesn't go out of. Savant says 30-for-30. I'm not surprised there.
Starting point is 00:02:20 Expected batting average in 950. He shalax it. And then, you know, he issues a walk and then a run-scoring single by, I believe, Teadocio, of all people. Well, from that point on, Brian Wu wasn't just good. He was elite. His secondary stuff was good. His fastball was good. Everything tonight was so impressive from Brian Wu. And 23 swings and misses tonight on. Should have had that in front of me. That's okay. You know, we're just getting used to doing the whole thing. A hundred pitches. So that's a pretty easy percentage one. 23% of his pitches were swung at and missed today. That's incredible. That's incredible work. He used to one walk and he just misses on a couple of them.
Starting point is 00:03:07 I think Wu thought he that got a little incorrect umpiring. Those pitches were outside of the strike zone, but really impressive work from Brian Wu today. On a night where you needed it, on a night where you needed Brian Wu to be at his absolute best, you need all of your starters to be at their absolute best from this point on, to be clear. And goodness gracious, he was just so good. From the third inning on, that's as good as I've seen. Brian Wu. And I love that when he finally gets that 10th strikeout. And for those who are unfamiliar with this, Brian Wu has struck out nine guys like five times this year and just
Starting point is 00:03:43 has not been able to get to that 10th strikeout. He just hasn't been able to do it. He gets that 10th strikeout. You see the look on his face, the, and you also see Big Dumpur have the wherewithal after that strikeout to pass that thing to the side. That matter to him. And it's okay that it matter to him. More than anything, more than anything, it's okay for that to happen because individual statistics and baseball matter. And in large part, because individual statistics almost always lead to seem success. Not always, but it's a good start. It's usually a good thing when your pitcher is striking out guys. And yes, as a few of you have pointed out, oh my goodness gracious, this angels lineup after the top four is just reprehensible. Reprehensible. Reprehensible. 2012 2010, the aughts vibes for the Seattle Mariner offense is what I get from watching this Angels team right now. It's just you have a Hall of Famer, you have a couple of nice little players, and then crap.
Starting point is 00:04:46 But Brian Woof's stuff was really good today. The movement on his fastball is always there, but the secondary stuff is what really impressed me. Let's talk about the bullpen real quick. I really like how Dan managed the bullpen tonight. And if you're unfamiliar, that's Dan Wally. and the Seattle Mariner manager. Look, it's still a high leverage situation-ish because it's a save.
Starting point is 00:05:08 It's a game where a baseball card stat tells us that it's a save. But it's also facing the bottom of an order. And I love that even a lot of guys you would think 5-2 games still a save situation. You've got to throw your high leverage guys. No, you don't. Not against those guys. And you've got to save these guys too. So you get a win where you don't use Andres Munoz.
Starting point is 00:05:31 where you don't use Gabe Spire, where you don't use Edward Bizarro. And Luke Jackson, some hard contact, but nothing of it. Caleb Ferguson looked outstanding, gives up the single to Trout. That's okay. Gets out of there with two strikeouts. That is the Caleb Ferguson we need to see. And we've seen it for the last few. There was a real rough stretch there.
Starting point is 00:05:54 Matt Brash, the command was bad. The command was bad today. And he leaves a couple of pitches right down the middle of the play. one of them that Taylor Ward just absolutely destroyed, destroyed. And then he gives up the long single. Shout out to Randy a Rose Arena for keeping that a single, keeping that double play in line. You get the double play, you get the strikeout, you advance, you get the save.
Starting point is 00:06:20 It's okay to give up runs sometimes. It wasn't Matt Brassett as best. I don't think that he is the answer at closer or anything like that that many people were suggesting a little bit ago. But that's okay. He's a very, very, very good high leverage arm. Very good high leverage arm. Do you guys think Hancock should have closed the game just to give Brash the extra day?
Starting point is 00:06:44 No, it's a good question, though, Jolly Badger, and I always appreciate you showing up. You're one of most loyal for sure and really do appreciate everybody who's tuned in all year for this stuff. I would have gone with Brash, in part because I want to keep Brash. in the routine, too, if that makes sense. I just want to see Matt Brash pitch better. But I had no issue going there. I'd like to see Hancock used again. He was really impressive in that last relief appearance.
Starting point is 00:07:13 So, yeah, that was good work. I really like the way Dan managed this game, and in particular, the way he used the bullpen arms. All right, we'll talk about some scoreboard stuff, and we'll talk about the offense. But first, we're going to thank our tremendous sponsors. This episode is brought to you by Nutrafol. You've probably seen a million ads for hair growth products and thought, sure, like that actually works. There are so many products out there.
Starting point is 00:07:46 And it's hard to know which ones are actually going to do anything. And that's why you should give Nutrafol a closer look. It's the number one dermatologist recommended hair growth supplement brand trusted by over one and a half million people. And it's not just type. This is a supplement. clinically tested that targets the root cause of fitting and shedding with a pro-active approach. You guys know that I am an embracer of bald is beautiful, but a lot of people don't embrace that and they lose confidence and it's not a great thing. If you can do something to help get to the bottom of that cost and if you feel more confident, this is the type of product you should be using it. In particular, it's because it's NSF certified and it's backed by peer reviewed studies.
Starting point is 00:08:35 This is not hocus pocus. This is not someone hiring an Etsy witch to try to get your hair back. This is genuine science and that is why it's important to take a look. Starting point is 00:10:09 Let's talk about this offense. Well, no. First, let's do some scoreboard witching. Scoreboard witching. I read I think Etsy which might be real. Might. Right. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:10:22 If you're real, thank you very much. So scoreboard stuff. The New York Mets hate the Seattle Mariners and that's fine. We don't like them either. The New York Mets blow a lead against the Texas Rains. Rangers, so the Rangers win, so you don't gain any ground on the Texas Rangers. Atlanta is a very bad baseball team, and you saw Atlanta be a very bad baseball team, and you don't get any ground on the Houston Astros.
Starting point is 00:10:50 So everything's the same. You have a two-game lead on the Texas Rangers. It's technically three because you have clinched that tiebreaker and then some. So the Texas Rangers have to be three games better. than you over these next 13 games. The Houston Astros, that's all going to come down to, you know, you know, but it's awesome that, hey, Houston's turning it back around. It looks like a little bit after struggling against them. The Texas Rangers have been an absolute wagon for the past week. And here's the best part. As good as the Texas Rangers have been, they've gained
Starting point is 00:11:27 nothing because the Seattle Mariners have been that good of a baseball team. And as Jason points out, that's the big thing. There's one less game. There's one less game for those teams to make up ground. So sounds pretty good to me. Rowdy is also dead to me. For those who missed Rowdy Files with a massive game tying double today. I don't blame him for being a little mad at the Seattle Mariners, but take it out on someone else. All right, let's talk about the offense. First of all, striking out seven times against me. Mitch Ferris was a little frustrating. That's a guy who has a chance to stick around as a back-end starter.
Starting point is 00:12:10 Seven strikeouts is a little much. It's a little much. Outs or outs. But that's a little ridiculous. But I thought the offense today was mostly solid. I think getting those two runs in the first inning was huge. Because obviously, you win the game by two runs. But it put pressure on them.
Starting point is 00:12:32 Like their big inning, that next inning, all it did was tie the game back up. There's something about that. There is something to that mentally. And a nice at bat from Cal Raleigh, a nice bat from Julio, and then Jorge Polanco rips that double. He's just been so good. So good. I also, shout out to Dan Wilson.
Starting point is 00:12:54 Love the lineup change that he made today. Jorge Polanco deserves to be hitting ahead of Aohenio Suarez. In the past, we have seen Suarez sitting clean. up against lefties. Today, we see Suarez hitting fifth, nailer hitting sixth. Probably switched that next time. Aeohenio is the one offensive uh-oh to me. Victor Robles goes O'Fer 3 with a couple of strikeouts. Randy has a couple of strikeouts. Um, Heohedio Suarez has the same amount of hits in September as you and I. No, that's not true. That's not true. I'm sorry. I forgot he got off to a good start.
Starting point is 00:13:28 Since the middle of September or the early portion of, it's not. been good. It's not been good. He just looks off, whether that's being tired, whether that's pitchers recognizing a hole in the swing, whatever it is. It just hasn't been good enough. My unsung hero is going to be J.P. Crawford for that home run. It's easy to forget because of the terrific at bat for Josh Naylor, which I'm going to talk about in just a sec. But giving them that three-two lead, I felt really confident they were going to win this game after that Homer. And it's just great to see him drive the baseball. I could go on about Josh Naylor's at bat to give them the five two lead for another hour and a half. That's as good of an at bat as I've ever seen.
Starting point is 00:14:15 Because a lot of times when you see somebody who is fouling off a bunch of pitches, they're fouling off hitable pitches. They're just not getting the timing down. No, that's not what Josh Naylor was doing there. Silseth was throwing him some really, really good pitches and he kept fouling them off. Kept fighting. Kept fighting. And then he comes through. He comes through with that two-run single and that was just,
Starting point is 00:14:46 oh, that is just. And yes, I saw at the very end a bunch of people talk about this that Nailer shouted out his buddy Tucker, the dog. I want Josh Nailer back. I really do. And it's clear that he's not 100%. it's clear he's not 100%, but he cares. And I'm not saying anyone else on the Mariners didn't, to be clear.
Starting point is 00:15:10 But he really cares. He really cares. And he just kept battling, as Teresa just says right here. He just kept battling. And that was a massive moment. Now, to be fair, he also gets picked off, or not picked off, A little bit of a two-blan thrown out on the bases like an income poop after he tries to steal sacking and Garver pops up. Oops.
Starting point is 00:15:37 But those are okay when you come up with two-run singles. You take the bitter with the better. It's a great win. And now you have a chance for the sweep. And I want that sweep. I want that sweep. And then the biggest road trip maybe in Seattle Mariner history. I can't think of a bigger one, not including going.
Starting point is 00:16:00 on the road for playoff games. This is the biggest road trip in Seattle Mariner history, but you got to get one more win to cement the perfect homestand. And another thing that would be great is if you would hit like and subscribe because it guarantees a Mariner win tomorrow if you do that. I don't know why. I don't know how. It's what the Etsy witch told me.
Starting point is 00:16:25 Really appreciate it, guys. This has been fun. I'm having so much fun watching this team again. 47 and 27 at home. And that's what I love to see. Make Team Mobile matter. And they've done just that. I love you all.
Starting point is 00:16:42 See you soon.
