Starting point is 00:00:02 2026 Mariners Baseball is back. Are we still in 2025? I'm Chris Crawford, and I hope you guys found this channel a lot easier than you found the channel on cable. This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome back. everybody thank you so much for supporting us it's the mariner's postcast myself anderson
Starting point is 00:00:45 hurst i have chris crawford with me we go live right after every single mariner baseball game it's opening day great to see everyone great to hear from everyone we have a mariner's baseball game to talk about and uh it's back like it never left chris crawford huh huh oh man oh man to to think the last two of these have been games like this are with a little bit of time behind. I just want to say it's great to be back. I'm super excited that we get to do this again. And we'll have much better days. Let me just issue a quick warning.
Starting point is 00:01:18 And boy, already 113 people in here really do appreciate that. We are only talking about tonight, right? Yes. We are only reacting to tonight. We are not predicting what's going to happen for the season for better or for worse. We are just reacting to tonight's game. We really appreciate it. We appreciate Ty and Colby for all the support and all that good stuff.
Starting point is 00:01:40 But tonight was a bummer. Yeah, let's get into it. For those of you who might be new, because there might be some new people. My name is Anderson Hurst. I got Chris Crawford with me. If you watch Locked on Mariners or if you're a consumer of Lockedon Mariners, Ty Day Gonzalez and Colby Patnode have your daily show. So they kind of go by the day-by-day stuff, the kind of bigger picture stuff.
Starting point is 00:02:03 Chris and I react and do kind of a post game show sort of thing. We call it a postcast because you can listen to it in podcast form as well here on Locked on Mariners. So they're not going anywhere for those of you who might wonder where Ty and Colby might be. They're still here. Don't worry. Chris and I got your post game coverage, Ty and Colby got your game day coverage, if that makes sense. So let's react to this one. Mariners lose the Cleveland Guardians in day one of the MLB season, opening day.
Starting point is 00:02:33 There's lots to talk about, you know, we could talk about Logan Gilbert. Let's do our tradition, Chris Crawford, for those of you who, again, are new. We like to start with the start. It kind of is a good starting point for, you know, baseball teams. You have to have a good starting pitching performance usually. And just evaluate Logan Gilbert's outing tonight. I mean, kind of the definition of, eh. I mean, there were some good stuff.
Starting point is 00:03:01 what really hurt Logan Gilbert, almost used a different word there, was that he could not command his slider. Like the slider command just wasn't there. Chaste the Lodder. Boy, talk about a great regular season debut for Chase the Lodder, by the way. And a lot of rookies having really good days today.
Starting point is 00:03:19 If you've got them on your fantasy teams, congratulations. Leaves a couple of pitches in the middle of the plate with that pitch. I thought the stuff looked great. And he generates 12 swings and misses, which is a pretty solid number. Nice to see him pitch into the sixth inning. It didn't look like he was going to get to that mark based on the first two
Starting point is 00:03:36 winnings where he throws 40 pitches. It would have been nice to get more than five in a third. I expect more from Gilbert, but this could have been a lot worse. It also could have been a disaster start considering he didn't command that slider very well. The split looked great. Like that pitch gave them a lot of troubles. The 12 swings and misses generated, I imagine most of them on that pitch. It certainly wasn't the best we've seen him.
Starting point is 00:04:01 nor anything close, but all things considered. Yeah, I mean, I think there was a couple he hung, especially the first one to the water. It just wasn't a very good pitch. And for me, I think one of the biggest things going into this season was, if we're going to see the Mariners take that next step and kind of be a World Series contending team, their starting pitching needs to go back to what it was in 2023, 2024. Even though those two years, they didn't make the playoffs, it was their offense that kind of let them down.
Starting point is 00:04:33 They actually had kind of a down year in 2025 by their standards. They were kind of more relatively closer to the middle of the pack starting pitching. And for me, Logan Gilbert, this reminded me much more of a 2025 Logan Gilbert outing than a 2024 logan Gilbert outing, right? So, and if I'm hoping for us to take that next step, I need the guy that's starting an opening day to be that kind of ace-like figure and he wasn't exactly that today. So he wasn't terrible by any stretch of the imagination. A couple of bad pitches. It gets, it gets beat.
Starting point is 00:05:07 The offense wasn't good either though, Chris. So let's get into that. I just, we'll get into the managerial decisions in a second here because there was some questions regarding, you know, the bullpen decisions were back, day one like we never left. But you can't perform like the offense did today and expect to win a lot of games. games either. No, it's totally fair. And, you know, they get off to such a great start. The very first batter of the game hits the home run to tie the game. And, you know, you get two
Starting point is 00:05:37 runs in the first couple of innings because Dom Kanzone also hits a home run after two atrocious at bats from Randy or Rosarina and from Luke Rayleigh. You get that middle, middle pitch that Dom Kanzone takes advantage of. So it started out okay. But from the third inning on, this offense really struggled. And I'll give some credit to. Tanner Bibi, he generates 15 swings and misses. And Bibi is, you know, by no means an ace, but he's a competent mid-rotation starter. It's interesting. He got absolutely shellacked and spring training over his last two starts. So maybe he was due from ascension there. But I just, the offensive game plan was not good tonight. I thought there was way too much assertive or
Starting point is 00:06:18 aggressiveness, not assertiveness against this Cleveland Guardians pitching staff. They've got to perform a lot better. And it goes one through nine. Really, outside of number seven, the guy who was hit in seventh, you can't complain about whatsoever, really, even though he's the guy who wins the game. But there were some really, really poor at bats tonight from players that you just don't expect to STB. Yeah, and let's go through it. I mean, obviously, Brandon Donovan has a great debut.
Starting point is 00:06:48 He was two for four with a whole one. He also goes in that too, my bad. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's a great debut. So good days from Brendan Donovan. from Luke Rayleigh and Dom Canzon. Everyone else, not great. It wasn't good, especially Julio, especially Cal.
Starting point is 00:07:03 Yeah. Randy didn't look good. Kind of the middle. Josh Naylor didn't have a great day either. Those guys that you kind of lean on to win you baseball games didn't have good days today. A lot of K's, it kind of looked more like the 23, 24 Mariners that didn't really work to count that much. And it's unfortunate because we saw this.
Starting point is 00:07:25 offense kind of take a step forward in 2025. And hopefully, I mean, it's just one day. Like, I'm going to reiterate what Chris said. We're reacting to this game specifically. We're not saying it's the end of the season or anything like that. But we can only react to what we just saw, as we always say. And it wasn't very good tonight. So let's kind of move on from the offense.
Starting point is 00:07:49 I mean, it was fine in some areas. You're going to have some good days, some bad days. but also let's talk about the bullpen decisions. And I want to do that after a quick break here. And then we'll kind of really get into it because I think it started in that seventh inning. And it just went downhill from there, Chris Crawford. So Logan Gilbert goes five and I think he gets into the sixth inning, actually. So that was good from him.
Starting point is 00:08:16 Mariners lose this one to the Cleveland Guardian, six to four to go to Owen one on the season on opening day. We're here on the Merrittors Postcast. We'll be right back after a quick timeout. What if sports were traded like markets? Now you can put your sports IQ to work in real time with Robin Hood prediction markets. In my opinion, I think he's the most underrated player in the game of baseball. But there's not a lot of people kind of outside of Cleveland and diehard baseball fans that know this guy is legit. You saw it tonight.
Starting point is 00:10:58 The power, you know, the clutch gene that he has comes up in big moments. Mariners lose this one, 6 to 4 to the Cleveland Guardians. Good day from Dom Kanzone, gets two home runs.
Starting point is 00:12:26 A nuke from Luke Rayleigh was good to see. And then a lead-off home run from Brendan Donovan. Four solo shots. of the Mariners, that's all they get offensively. You know, four runs, maybe in some days where you have a good pitching performance, you can expect to win games scoring four runs, not today. Because, you know, Logan Gilbert was, you know, okay, not great, but not awful either. He kept you in the game, but not what you expect from an ace, I should say.
Starting point is 00:12:54 But, Chris, seventh inning, it kind of went downhill. I'm going to ask you this, we're going to kind of go in order of these decisions here. they start with Gabe Spire, bringing him in in the seventh inning here, to face the eight, nine, and one hitters. And they mentioned it on the broadcast, Aaron Goldsmith and Ryan Rollinsmith here. They mentioned that it actually was ahead of time. It was an okay move, even though there was two righties before they got to Stephen Kwan, because they kind of looking forward, expected, you know, if someone were to get on base, you want Gabe Spire in that spot to kind of get him out.
Starting point is 00:13:28 the big thing for me was leaving him in there once it got to Jose Ramirez. So I want to know your thoughts on going to him and then sticking with him in that situation. I thought it was a mistake. I did not have a problem with Spire starting that seventh inning whatsoever because of what they were bringing up. Like those are guys you should be able to have left handers or right handers get out. They are bottom of the order hitters on a very mediocre lineup. Like you should not be hearing. That's being nice to the guy.
Starting point is 00:13:58 Yeah, it might be being a little bit nice to him. So, yeah, that's fair. That's fair. I was going to say, are you going to correct me the other way? That's crazy. Here's the thing is that you have Matt Brash hot. He's ready to roll. I don't understand why you're not going there.
Starting point is 00:14:14 Well, I understand it from the point of, well, then Matt Brash has to pitch to Kyle Manzardo and has to pitch to, but that's Matt Brash, right? That's your swinging miss guy. There's two outs at that point too, right? There's two outs at that point. Go get him. Go get Matt Brash to go get that out for you. And we just got to talk about it, man.
Starting point is 00:14:35 The manager of this baseball team has made questionable decisions for a very long time and nothing that happened tonight made me think these questionable decisions are going to stop. I think one of the things that I would love to talk about for a very long time outside of the poor decision in the seventh inning is, I'm not sure if you saw the Sanders. There was a report pregame about the ABS, and a lot of you guys have been talking about it in the chat, and we really appreciate everybody who's shown up.
Starting point is 00:15:04 The Mariners have apparently made the decision that only Cal Raleigh and Mitch Garver will be able to use ABS challenges this year, which means that there will be no challenges for the Seattle Mariners when they're at the plate, unless Mitch Garver or Cal Rale is at the plate. Holy crap on a cracker that is beyond stupid. that is beyond stupid to have that strategy.
Starting point is 00:15:27 There's no way that's true. I'm sorry. That's what they said pregame. And it got posted a bunch of places. If that's true, it's diabolically stupid. Like, this is not me doing a, I know more than you. And yet it may be because there's no way that's a good strategy, simply not a good strategy.
Starting point is 00:15:49 And I will say this too. Cal Raleigh not using a challenge there in the 8th inning on that pitch is insane. It's absolutely insane to not use one of your challenges there. And I think that might just be some stubbornness. That might be some stubbornness. That's an old school manager that used to be a catcher that likes to frame pitches that doesn't like the ABS system.
Starting point is 00:16:11 A thousand percent. That's such a good way to put it. But that decision to go to not go to Brash there is just the beginning of bad decisions from Dan Wilson in this game because Casey Lugamina and Cooper Criswell In a one-run game. Beyond high leverage games with a fully fresh bullpen, not using Edward Vizardo, not using Matt Brash,
Starting point is 00:16:38 not using Andres Munoz, no, going to Casey Beans and Cooper Chriswell. I would say Chris mediocre, to be honest with you. I'm not going with you. It's insane. It's absolutely insane. And this is the type of stuff you haven't earned the benefit of the doubt, Dan, you just haven't. Not based on what happened in the postseason, not based on some questionable decisions during the regular season. You can talk all you want about how the players love him.
Starting point is 00:17:08 You can talk all you want about all that stuff. That's important that keeping the clubhouse good is a very important thing. The endgame decisions from Dan Wilson are. sometimes laughable. And tonight it was laughable to use Cooper Criswell in the ninth inning of a one-run baseball game against two, three, four. That just doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:33 And anyone pointing out that they still would have lost, even if they didn't, you know, you don't know that. You don't know that. Well, A, you don't know that. But B, even if that's the case, this isn't about the result, right? We've talked about this so many times and we're going to bring it. up once again. It's process versus result. You want to give yourself the best chance to win every
Starting point is 00:17:53 single night. And I realized that especially when you get later in the season and you have some tired arms and stuff like that, you're going to not necessarily give up a game, but you're going to, you know, look for future kind of as a bigger picture kind of, okay, we're going to, we've used Andres Munoz three of the last four nights. Let's rest him tonight, even though it's a tie game at this point. Sure. But that's not the case right now. No. This is, it's the first. game of the season. You're oh and oh, you're tied with everyone else in the division. It's not like you have a 10-game lean or anything like that.
Starting point is 00:18:26 It's weird to me. And I know, and a lot of people are also pointing out regarding the ABS thing, that, you know, Kwan's challenge was bad. Yeah. And that would be a negative side of things if you allowed all of your players to challenge. But also, did it matter? the Cleveland didn't use them all. They didn't have zero challenges at the end of the game and then wish they had one, right?
Starting point is 00:18:53 It doesn't matter at the end of the day. It's like timeouts in the NFL, use it or lose it, right? It's those guys that sit on their timeouts. Like, might as well just challenge it at the end. Like, it makes no sense to me why you wouldn't in that situation, especially with one of the guys that reportedly can. Yeah, that's, that's my biggest thing there is that Cal Raleigh's just got to use the challenge there. He has to. and I'm disappointed.
Starting point is 00:19:19 Should we do our unsung heroes and villains? Yeah, let's go really quick. Unsung hero, who do you got? By the way, again, for those of you who are new, we're going to do this, we kind of reset it really quick for the, you know, new season, all that stuff. Chris and I do an unsung hero and an unsung villain, kind of someone who flies under the radar can be a good way or in a bad way.
Starting point is 00:19:37 You know, usually wins, unsung hero, losses, unsung villain, but sometimes we go the other way. But Chris, who do you got for your unsung hero or villain today? I'm going to give you my villain and then I'm going to ask you to give your hero and then I want to end with my hero because I'm going to be my unsung villain tonight is Josh Naylor because yeah big dumper was bad after that walk big dumper you hit the home run in the first inning big jumper draws the walk it's a great at bat Julio strikes out 3-0 pitch you swing at a pitch that is not even close to middle middle you hit into a double play and you kind of whether you believe in momentum or not yeah I thought that was a huge situation. I thought Josh Naylor looked lost today. It was really disappointing. I think he was probably trying to do too much. So that's my unsung villain for the game.
Starting point is 00:20:23 And then do you want to me to go hero? I forget. You can go hero or villain, whichever one you want. I just want to end with my guy. Okay. I'll do unsung hero and I'll do Jose Ferrer. I think he actually looked pretty decent today. I know he got one hit or two hits against.
Starting point is 00:20:37 You get up to one of them very much on Luke Rayleigh having no idea of the baseball what are we doing there? Speaking of, we'll get. to that in a second. But I think like, have it, like, it seemed like at that point in time, we talked about Dan Wilson and the bullpen decision making. At that point in time, I was like, oh, maybe he's, it seems like he's going to his higher leverage guys earlier here.
Starting point is 00:21:03 Let's go. I love that kind of change in thinking. Because in my eyes, I was like, Jose Ferrer's, you know, Spire, Ferrer, Munoz, Brash, kind of in that upper echelon of relievers. and he gets the job done, you know, has a couple hits, but it gets out of it. It kind of looks like a results-based guy, which I think we need. We don't need another kind of fire breather who looks great on analytics, but sometimes gives up the bombs, you know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:21:29 And it just seemed like, okay, we're looking good here. But in general, Jose Ferrer just looks like another good lefty out of the pen. Soft contact. I think we need more of that in our bullpen because we have so much strikeout kind of thing. so we need kind of the other side of things. We need guys that can get outs. So I like what I saw from Jose Ferreier. And then I'm going to go quick unsung villain.
Starting point is 00:21:53 It's my corner outfield defense. Yeah. Randy Rosarena had two balls go over his head, which I don't know if he catches, but he looks like he's just jogging to it, not even trying. And then Luke Rayleigh, you mentioned that blooper. Like, what are we doing?
Starting point is 00:22:13 I realize that Luke Rayleigh is faster. than a lot of people realize and everyone loves to point that out. But just because you're fast does not mean you're a good defensive baseball player. So I'm just going to point it out. Corner outfield defense looked terrible. So yeah. My unsung hero, and I will say this, tonight's stunk. It stinks that you don't win.
Starting point is 00:22:33 Brody from on Alaska. If you guys got a chance to watch him running the bases today, I went live today on my channel and I just basically sobbed. Oh, I didn't see you. So they have a make a wish kid run the bases before every game. And Brody, Brody fell. Brody fell tripping over first base and looked really out of breath. And holy crap.
Starting point is 00:23:00 His dad, I believe it was dad, came out and ran with him and got the crowd. Wow. Fired up. And sucks to lose. Sucks, suck, sucks. That's why opening day is special is you get stuff like that. It sucks to lose. lose. But then you get reminded there's 161 more and you get really cool stuff like Brody.
Starting point is 00:23:19 We love you, man. Yeah, that's a great, great story. I wish I had seen that live. That's so cool. I was doing other things and everything. But yeah, I do now that I think about it, remember all the opening day kids running around the bases, they do kind of a special moment for that every single year. So I'll definitely go check that out if I get the chance. But thank you for bringing that to my attention. And as, as you mentioned, this is what makes opening day special. This is what makes baseball special and this is what makes doing this postcast special is hanging out with you guys after every single game. For those who don't know, we'll be here every day. You know, me or Chris, me and Chris, we'll kind of do a tag team sort of thing. Hopefully most
Starting point is 00:23:57 of the time, it's both him and I, but it's, I love doing this with Chris. He's one of my great friends. I trust him in his baseball analysis big time. Doesn't mean I'll agree with him every time. No. But, uh, and I love doing this for you guys on Lockdown Mariners. Be sure to check out Ty and Colby. They'll have a podcast up tomorrow. And kind of obviously recapping this game, looking ahead of the next game and stuff like that. We love to be part of your daily routine.
Starting point is 00:24:25 So, you know, Ty and Colby during the day. And then for instant reaction, Chris and I on the Mariners Postcast, you can catch us live on YouTube. You can listen to us anywhere you get your podcast as well. Appreciate everyone for hanging out with us. We'll talk to you tomorrow night. It's good to be back, Chris Crawford. Great to be back.
