This is the Mariners Postcast.
Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners.
Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Oh, boy, what a snoozer of a game that was.
The Mariners lose this one, 7 to 2 against the Baltimore oils.
They lose the third of four in the series.
They fought a 36 and 33 on the season.
Honestly, guys, there's not a lot to talk about in this.
game. I'm going to be completely honest with you. George Kirby was actually, I think, looking
pretty good through his first few innings starting today. And then the sixth inning came.
And it's been a theme not just with him. Logan Gilbert's had this issue as well. It's just,
for whatever reason that sixth inning, usually it's around the third time through the order.
The starters can't get the length. And the way that the current roster is constructed right now with
there being a six-man rotation, it's, it's very hard to kind of deal with that.
You have one less bullpen arm.
You now Matt Brash goes on the IL.
There's a lot of different ways in which that, that kind of stuff doesn't really help
this Mariners team.
And you could tell that there was almost a sense of, I don't want to say giving up on this
one, but it was like a, hey, you know, let's play for tomorrow, so to speak.
And letting Domingo Gonzalez kind of ride this one out, serving up just absolute
cookies over the plate for Jackson Holiday to kind of get his season going a little bit.
But I mean, this is one of those games where, you know, they always say, I think it's something
like you win 60, you lose 60, and it's like what you do with the other 80.
I think that that's the math ends up mathing.
This is one of those you lose 60, right?
I mean, you run the first two games of the series.
It's not like you gave this one away with a couple plays.
It was very winnable game.
You didn't.
the offense wasn't anywhere to be found.
We'll talk about why,
but they were super ineffective against Brandon Young.
It just is what it is.
Let's start with the start with George Kirby.
Like I said, at the top of the show,
I think he actually, for the first three, four, even five innings,
he looked pretty good.
He had to get out of a jam.
I believe it was in the fourth inning.
Sorry, third inning, where he had the bases loaded nobody out,
and he ends up striking out Pete Alonzo and striking out Liotte Tavares to end the inning without allowing a run.
And it was like, damn, that's the George Kirby I'm used to seeing.
There was a nasty sinker in there.
His breaking stuff was looking really good.
I felt like his swing and miss stuff was better than normal.
But very non-George Kirby-like.
And I realize it's been a little bit different in the last few years.
He gets three walks today.
So not exactly what you want to see from him.
10 Ks though. That's that's a great number.
He ends up leaving the game through six innings, seven hits, three runs, all earned, three walks, 10Ks.
It's, I mean, not the worst line in the world.
It shouldn't be an absolute loss because your starter goes six innings, gives up three runs.
But that's kind of what it felt like, A, because of the bullpen situation, and B, because of how the offense was performing.
And that's the other part of this that is very hard to swallow for me.
It's the offense.
It feels like they just didn't really show up tonight.
And once they figured that their approach, once again,
of just being incredibly over-aggressive against a pitcher who doesn't have that good of stuff,
as a high ground ball rate, just the exact type of pitcher you don't want to be over-aggressive with.
I don't know.
I didn't look.
How many walks do the Mariners get tonight?
They end up getting three.
That's more than I thought they did.
Maybe they got a couple later in the game that I'm forgetting about, but one from Patrick
Wisdom, one from Mitch Garver, and one from Luke Rayleigh, and you ended getting four hits.
So, I mean, you get on base a total of seven times.
That's just not enough in order to win baseball games.
And again, I'm not, you know, screaming and yelling about the decision to stick with Domingo
Gonzalez.
I have realized that you're kind of shorthanded Matt Brash.
I guess it was a good reason they weren't using him back to back because he was injured.
but then why wasn't he?
I don't know.
A lot of stuff going on with that whole situation.
At least the bullpen gets its rest day, I guess,
is a silver lining from this one
because then you can go out and win the series tomorrow.
And the other kind of thing I take away from this is,
thank God you won those first two games.
Because if you lose either of those first two,
this loss seems a lot harder to swallow for me.
You've already secured at the minimum of a series,
split between us and the Orioles.
And in a place where the Mariners have kind of struggled as of late,
it's not the end of the world.
But you expect them to start building some momentum here.
And if they go out and win tomorrow,
you can absolutely say that was the case.
So thank God you won those first two games,
because this game would feel a whole lot different if they did not.
The offense, guys, it just wasn't once,
I've said this so many times.
I feel like the Mariners struggle more.
against like the quad A, back of the rotation, fifth or sixth starter,
guy who can throw sinkers and get a lot of ground balls,
but doesn't have blow you away stuff,
is not going to strike you out a bunch.
They struggle more against that profile of pitcher
than the top of the rotation, Ace,
Tarek Scoubles, Jacob de Grombs of the world,
if you know what I mean.
For whatever reason, they decide to swing out of their shoes on every pitch,
against these types of pitchers.
And then they all of a sudden,
when they get the,
they face the guys that can blow you away
and get a lot of strikeouts
and tend to dominate average lineups,
that's when they decide to take more pitches
and draw more walks,
work more counts, foul off more.
Like, it just, I don't know.
I don't know what the disconnect is there for me.
Because we've seen it so, so often with these guys
that when they have this approach like they had today,
more often than not turns into a lack of success.
And that's exactly what happened today is Brian Young.
So, I mean, the guy's been pitching well.
I'm not going to act like he's this nothing pitcher.
He has a 3.04 ERA.
But it's nothing that jumps off the page.
He has a 1.24 whip.
He's not going to really strike a ton of people out.
It's, I don't know.
Again, it's the,
type of pitcher that the Mariners struggle against.
And they need to change their strategy against these types of guys because it just doesn't
work.
I mean, going up and down the lineup, you got, you got Cole Young who gets a hit,
you got Josh Naylor who gets a hit, Dom Canzon who gets a hit, and Master Boney who gets
a hit.
And then I mentioned the guys that get walks besides that.
And that's it.
and, I mean, Julio Rodriguez doesn't get on base.
He does get an RBI tonight.
Feels like he's going through a little bit of a,
I don't want to say slump because, you know,
it's before that point.
A little bit of a lull offensively for him.
He's had a couple weeks where he hasn't popped as much as we'd like him to,
and especially with the injuries that you have right now, it shows.
Randy Rosarana had a rare off night.
Goes O for four with a K.
Luke Rayleigh just gets the one walk, and he's been one of your best offensive players.
Dom canzone hits a ball hard, gets rewarded for it as well.
He continues to hit the ball well.
Mitch Garver, one walk.
That's kind of what he does.
Mastroboni, his first game of the season gets a hit.
Then Patrick Wisdom at the bottom of your lineup.
You just have a lot of guys that are injured right now.
So you need your stars to perform like stars, and you didn't get that today.
You didn't get a good George Kirby start.
you didn't get, you know, Julio, Randy, Nailer, I mean, didn't carry you to victory or anything like that.
So unfortunately, Mariners dropped this one, 7 to 2 against the Baltimore Orioles.
They still can go win the series tomorrow with Brian Wool on the mound.
We'll take a quick break, come back.
I have a quick announcement to make on the Mariners postcast.
My name's Anderson Hurst.
We'll be right back with more after a Mariners loss.

Welcome back to the Mariners Postcast.
My name is Anderson Hurst.
I'm going to create a quick poll for you guys so you can hang out and discuss this on the chat during the last few minutes of the show today.
My question to you is what's the most important thing to add at the trade deadline?
We got bullpen.
We got third baseman or a right-handed hitter.
You can type one for bullpen, two for third baseman and three for right-handed hitter in the chat.
and the results will show up on the screen as I am talking to you guys.
Welcome back.
My name is Anderson Hearst.
Seven two loss for the Mariners today, but 36 and 33 on the season.
And it's just, it's another example of the Mariners being overly aggressive against a
pitcher who has had a good year, but isn't going to blow you away with stuff.
And, you know, a lot of people like to complain about the striking out too much.
The Mariners only struck out, and I say only, but they struck out seven times a day.
That's compared to their Orioles that struck out 10 times, and they score seven runs out of it.
So it's not always the team that strikes out the most that ends up losing the game, right?
There's more that goes into that.
And this is a classic example of just being, you know, a little more than aggressive than what you need to be.
I think the best approach against these types of pitchers is to just kind of make them work a little bit.
try and get those borderline calls to go your way and then kind of hope for that so um again my my my my question to you guys is uh you know who's what's the most important add for the mariners at the deadline type one in the chat for bullpen type two uh for third base and type three for a right-handed hitter i know those the last two can kind of overlap a little bit but if you're thinking specifically you want a third basement every single day uh or if you wants any position but just give me a right-handed hitter.
hitter that can hit lefties. So let me know what you guys think. That'll show up in live time
based on what is going on in the chat. I want to make a quick announcement today because I know
there isn't a ton to talk about this game. Brian was on the mound tomorrow. I am going to take a
little bit of a step back from the postcast and I'll tell you why. It has nothing to do with,
you know, the scheduling and all that stuff. I
have been granted an amazing opportunity. I'm sure a lot of you know that the World Cup is starting
tomorrow. And with my day job at Sports Radio 93.3 KJRFM, I am going to be a huge part of their
coverage. And I'm going to be kind of tied down with that every single day. You can hear every
game on our app. You can hear 44 games with pregame halftime and post game coverage.
that's going to be broadcasting across the nation, you know, on our airwaves.
But the main reason why I wanted to mention this to you guys is because it's going to force me to kind of take a step back during the World Cup, just during the World Cup, from the postcast.
So there still will be postcasts. It may not be every single night like myself, but Ty, Colby, and all that stuff in there is going to be.
kind of filling in for me as I undertake this, this amazing opportunity for myself.
I'm a huge soccer fan. I've always been a huge soccer fan.
So I'm, I'm pretty excited for this.
But I'm going to miss you guys.
Going live after every single Mariners game reacting with the Mariners fans and this community
has been awesome.
It's just like I'm going to emphasize, it's just for this month,
month and a half or so that I am stepping back.
I'll be right back as soon as the World Cup is over.
So, you know, you get a break from me if you're not a huge fan of Anderson-Hurst, but you don't get to stay away from me for too long.
So thank you for those who for the well wishes for everything.
But it's just, unfortunately, with my schedule, it's just going to be too much with how much of an undertaking that will be.
That does start tomorrow.
So this is my last postcast until after the World Cup.
Again, you'll be, you'll be hearing me after all that's finished.
and we'll be back and ready to go kind of gearing up towards trade deadline time,
gearing up towards finishing up the season and all that jazz.
So I'm not leaving you guys.
Don't worry.
I'm just taking a break.
And we'll be back on July, I'll say 20th about is the day after the World Cup final finishes up.
So really appreciate all of you guys tuning in every single night.
It's been a huge pleasure.
And I'm going to continue to do that.
Don't worry.
But we are just making sure that you guys are aware.
that I'm taking a step back for a little bit just to kind of take the most, make the most out of this opportunity.
So thank you guys.
Appreciate all of you.
I'll talk to you guys after the World Cup, obviously.
I might jump in here and there if I find myself with a couple hours or something like that.
And Ty and Colby need some help with the postcast stuff.
But as of now, I will let you guys, you know, kind of experience the Mariner baseball with another.
postgame host just for the next month and a half.
But I'll talk to you guys after all that's finished up.
Appreciate all y'all.
Have a good rest of your Wednesday evening today.
And we'll talk to you soon.
Go Mariners.
