This is the Mariners Postcast
Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners
Part of the Locked-on podcast network
Your team every day
This team kind of sucks
This division kind of sucks
This league kind of sucks
This sport kind of sucks
That's about how we feel right now
This is your Mariners Postcast
I am Anderson Hurst. I got Christopher Crawford to my left. He's the expert. I am the overreactionary
fan. If you're the overreactionary of the two of us, we are well and far from home.
Thank you for censoring yourself there, because I don't know if I would, I've been very close to
not censoring myself at this point. Sure. Man, are things bad right now? Oh my God.
I don't even know where to start.
I guess we'll start with the start because that was crap.
You know, we'll talk about George.
We'll talk about the offense.
Once again, the score doesn't look as bad as it really was.
Sure.
This happens like three straight games in a row.
Yeah.
I just, I don't know.
And then we'll do our unsung question mark at that point.
But Chris Crawford, like, let's start with the start because George Kirby.
was horrific tonight.
And, um, I just, I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know either.
And, you know, it wasn't, here's what I'll just say about George Kirby, first of all.
It wasn't.
Some people suggested to me again on social media and it's my bad for being on social media,
right?
Like that's, or listening to it.
That's a poor life decision.
But suggesting that George Kirby,
like quit in this start, I wholeheartedly disagree. He just wasn't good. Like he wasn't even
kind of good enough. It wasn't a case of him lack of trying. It's just what he was doing wasn't good.
It wasn't good at all. He commanded nothing. And you talk about the difference between command and
control right there, right in front of you. Perfect example, because he throws 38 to 54 pitches for
strikes. And I would say of those 38 maybe negative four were good pitches today. It
It was an awful effort, awful.
But it wasn't a lack of effort.
He just stunk.
He stunk out loud.
And my favorite moment of this game was looking at George Kirby's eyes while he was talking
to Pete Woodworth during that mound visit.
And for those of you who missed it, I've never seen murderous eyes in real life before.
Now I have.
Because George Kirby, while talking in the mitt, I believe he was wrapping hit him up by
Tupac during that.
I don't blame him, right?
Because yeah, he's out there to calm him down.
There was no calming him down.
There was nothing.
It's over.
The damage is done.
It's too late.
And that's not an insult to Pete Woodworth, by the way.
That's not me saying Pete should have gone and talked to him before.
Pete could have read him the, what are those books called?
Pitching for dummies.
And it wouldn't have matter today.
George Kirby just didn't have it.
Flat out did not have it.
The reason that's disappointing is,
That's now back to back starts on the road, I believe, where George Kirby has been flat.
No, he was good against Cleveland.
I take it back.
Seven things to run baseball.
He was totally fine in that start.
But that's two out of three that have been at least seven runs allowed.
It's not good enough.
It's just flat out not good enough.
The thing with George Kirby is weird because I actually think it's the opposite.
I think he cares too much.
Oh, yeah.
I totally agree.
I think, like, he overreacts to something that happens and it just takes him way out of his game.
And I don't want to say he's pouting, but it's very just like one thing goes bad and it's like,
oh, it happens to me again.
Of course it does.
That's kind of what it looks like to me.
And to me, that's not a lack of effort.
That's not quitting.
That's not a lack of effort.
That's carrying, I don't want to say caring too much, but just it's not putting yourself in the right frame of mind.
He's too hard on himself.
He's absolutely too hard on himself.
You can see it there.
That's where you see those, what he looked like there.
If you've ever seen a movie where somebody's jaw is wired shut and they really have to talk with your eyes, you know?
Yeah.
That's what George Kirby was doing there.
That's what George Kirby was.
And you know what?
We talk a lot about or we talked a lot about how Mitch Garver is the answer for George Kirby.
Mitch Garver called a dog turd of a baseball game today.
You can throw other pitches than fastballs.
It's okay.
And now, did he command?
those other pitches very well? No, but it would have been nice for him to have some
pitches outside of the strike zone. You can throw your slider, you can throw your knuckle curve
outside way too many fastballs tonight and they got lit up. The first inning, it wasn't. It was a
lot of dink and dunk, right? It wasn't, that's not an excuse for George Kirby, by the way. It's
just, you know, good, solid base hit, solid base said. He wasn't getting like lambasted. He didn't
have those homers. In fact, I don't think he gave up a homer today, did he? Uh, no. I
I don't think so.
There's just a lot of, a lot of circling said bases.
Not to mention some terrible defense.
Some terrible defense behind him as well.
And again, we are not even coming close to excusing George Kirby.
It's just not good enough.
It's not good enough.
And George Kirby's got to make that adjustment.
There's no more injury excuse.
It's frustrating too because George Kirby before this little run.
George Kirby was the best mariner pitcher for a good.
eight-week span. And how many times have we said this about a pitcher now for the Seattle
Mariners? This guy was our best pitcher until he gets schlack. This guy was their best pitcher
until he gets schlack. The only guy we can't say it for, there's two. Brian Will still hasn't
had the shalacking. He's had some Mepie starts. And Bryce Miller has been good enough for us to call
him the best pitcher on the staff. Those are the only two. That's true. They just have to pitch
better. They have to do everything better. But there's a reason we start with the starts. The Seattle
Mariners will go as far as this starting pitching carry.
them and it just flat out hasn't been good enough for really since August 5th or so.
Since after the first homestand of August.
Yeah.
After that nine and one homestead or 10 and one stretch right after the trade deadline.
So, and it's getting the point where it's not even an individual pitcher issue.
I get Castillo's last four have been awful.
And but we're seeing this trend with all of them.
It's not just him.
I don't know whether it's, again, I'm going to point to coaching just because I think this roster is way better than they're playing right now.
And when, to me, logically, when I see that a roster is much better than the results they are getting or the way they are playing,
the first thing I look to is coaching.
It's the coach's job to get the most out of the players on the field.
And whether that's the pitching coach, Pete Woodworth, which we mentioned yesterday,
we'll say that again.
Just in general with Dan Wilson, like before we get to the offense, you never saw a Scott
Service coach baseball team look this bad.
No, you didn't.
Period.
At end of story, it was never this pathetic of an effort.
And it's happened multiple times.
That's the thing, too, is I went back and I took my mind.
And because I recapped every single Seattle Mariner game over the last two.
years. I went back and watched my videos after the Dodgers games and I unfortunately did predict
that Scott that Scott Service had managed his last baseball game. It was pretty obvious.
Yeah. But those games were competitive. Yeah. These are not competitive games. Guys, they gave up
25 runs over these three games. 19 hits today, guys. And they scored 7.11. They got out scored 25 to 11 against
a team that is not trying to win in 2025.
It's not good enough.
It's just not good enough.
No.
We'll get to the offense here in a second,
but do you think part of the reason they don't,
I always am trying to compare what I'm seeing now
to like the low points of Scott Service's tenure
just because I feel like I'm too hard on the manager,
but I'm trying to really put myself in the frame of mind.
Okay, did this happen under Scott Service?
Am I just really wishing that Dan Wilson wasn't it?
Is that a lot because your starting pitching is as bad as it's been in the last three years?
Yeah, I think, like, Dan Wilson is not the main culprit for all of this.
Right.
But again, I will point out, is Dan Wilson making the Seattle Mariners better?
And if he is, how garbage is this baseball team?
Right.
because if he's making them better, they must really suck.
This must be a really garbage baseball team.
I'm just telling you right now, it's not.
It's not a garbage baseball team.
It's not a great baseball team, but it's not garbage.
And the way they have played outside of the series against the Padres,
even the series against the athletics,
outside of one game against the athletics and two games against the Padres
for a long period of time now, over a month,
I believe.
Yeah.
They've played like garbage and the manager hasn't made them better.
The tough thing is the door is wide, flipping open.
The door is wide open for them to take it.
It's a pillow fight.
Like, I've just, I've watched a lot of the Kansas City game today and they are winning,
I believe the Angels are winning four to three right now in the top of the ninth inning.
Kansas City is not a good baseball team.
It's a perfectly average baseball team.
Texas, they've had a nice run.
How many guys on the Texas Rangers playing right now would you want on the Seattle Mariners?
Right now.
Two, three.
And one of them is on the injured list right now.
So this is a team that's hitting Jock Peterson third right now.
You're going to lose to a team that's sitting Jock Peterson third?
They still playing Routy until I was at first base.
They, Rowdy had the day off today.
He went 0 for 1 as a pinch hitter.
Dima also O for 1 as a pin shitter.
Sam Haggerton's still starting?
Sam Haggerty, no.
Something called an M. Hellman is playing center field for him right now.
That really what is happening?
You're really going to blow this to one of these types of teams?
It's pathetic, man.
It's, it's, it's, we can't even think of new ways to describe how bad it is
because we just went through one of these stretches like 10 days ago.
So it's crazy to think that we're back here.
We're back here.
The mayor just got swept by the Tampa Bay raise.
We will get to the offense, I guess, because there was a couple things to mention.
I guess.
And it was mostly bad.
Let's give some luck to our sponsors on the way here on the Mariner's Postcast.
We'll talk to you in just a quick second.

Welcome back to the Mariners postcast, Anderson Hurst, Christopher Crawford with you.
I got Chris Crawford, my expert, to try and walk me off the ledge,
but he might just push me off of it at this point.
See, there's no, there's no coming back.
There's no coming back.
Let's talk about the offense a little bit because, I mean, the reason you got swept in this series, one word is pitching, like straight up.
Like, that is the reason, main reason, I should say.
It's not like the offense was great.
It's not like you were losing these games 12 to 11.
No, no, it's a very misleading four.
And for the Mariners, this is the only my unsung hero.
is Julio Rodriguez, which is a weird thing to say for the guy who is a three-run homer.
If Adrian Houser would have shut out the Seattle Mariners, I don't show up today.
No way.
No way in hell.
You wouldn't have seen me anywhere near that absolute A-hole wearing that OKC jersey.
Are you kidding me?
At the very least, his start went from being terrific to kind of crappy.
Like, you know, seven things, four-run baseball isn't all that great.
That's the only positive.
And I didn't check baseball savant.
I think that's a one.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's a one.
By the way, we saw zero recently on the Trevor Story home run.
Yeah, it's pretty interesting.
That's an interesting one.
Look up Trevor Story home run and it'll be.
Okay.
Yeah.
This offense was bad today.
Bad, bad, bad.
And it started in the first inning.
Three pitches.
Three pitches.
Do you know when the last time that happened was Anders?
Yeah, I was curious.
2003.
For the Mariners.
Yes.
22 years.
Think of how much inept crappy offense.
Oh, boy, did I have to edit myself there?
Yes, I was ready to go.
How much offense we have seen suck out loud to do something that hasn't been done.
I believe it was against Tim Hudson of the Oakland and then athletics.
So is that the last time that it led off a game?
or is that the last time it happened?
I think it was the first.
I didn't look up that much more, but it was terrible.
It was just a terrible effort.
And what I ultimately come back to, Anders, is why should I care right now?
Because it really seems like the Seattle Mariners don't.
It just doesn't seem like the Seattle Mariners care.
And the only guy that I get caring vibes from right now, there's two, is it's
Dumpur and Julio, are the only guys that it's,
It seems like...
I'll give you one more.
Leo Rivas.
Yeah.
Like, he doesn't even count to me.
I'm sorry.
I wish I could buy into Leo Rivas.
He's my unsung hero.
Yeah.
Leo Rivas, good for you, buddy.
Yeah.
Hey, good for Taylor Sissetto.
Three innings of shutout baseball, too.
That was great.
Spencer, I don't know who Spencer is.
Emerson Hancock looked awful.
And who else?
in this game.
Bizarro was fine.
Bizarro, yeah.
They look cooked, man.
I'm almost disappointed
that there's 22 games left
because this is going to be
heartbreaking.
This is going to be so much worse
than last year blowing the 10 game lead.
I'm going to ask you, is this worse?
So much worse. If the Merritt were to miss this,
is this worse?
So much worse.
Yeah, because you have a much better team.
Oh, much better team.
More talented.
team more talented roster for sure it's worse it's it's it's just worse it's worse to to have the
opportunities that you have and then you acknowledge how awful the american league is this year
awful if you are not one of the six best teams pathetic and everyone should go everyone
every single one i don't think it'll happen no it won't it won't it's um
You need an ownership that cares more.
You need an ownership that actually puts more effort into this to have that.
But no, I mean, I talk to people today, literally today.
I talk to people talking about saying that Dan Wilson's trying as you know what off and I just have to.
Cool.
He's not just, if that's trying as you know what off.
It's just a popular figure.
And it's why it was a brilliant managing decision from John Stanton because people like
Dan Wilson. The hardcore baseball fan, guys, if you can understand one thing, there's 252 of you in here
right now. Thank you very much. So 254 now. Two of us. That's 256 people, right? We are not indicative
of Seattle Mariner baseball fans or sports fans at all. We are not. This is not the normal.
This is not the normal sports fan. We are not indicative of what the Seattle Barroner sports fan thinks.
they think about Dan Wilson,
what a mighty good man,
handsome fella,
played on the 1995 team,
refused to lose,
blah, blah, blah.
That's what they care about.
That's what they care about.
Is that true?
100%.
I get that's what ownership thinks is true.
I struggle to really think
that the majority of Seattle Mariners baseball fans
actually care about that more
than if they're really good today.
in 2025.
But they care about that.
They want that.
But this is, and I'm going to go back to what my buddy Kevin Shockey said a long time ago,
that Jerry DePoto has put the Mariners in a perfect position where they're good enough
that they do not alienate the fan base, but they don't have to spend a lot of money
or make difficult decisions.
They don't.
They just don't.
And that's what your average fan cares about.
And it's why you still, this homestand, I guarantee.
guarantee you we get 35,000 plus.
Guarantee it.
Guarantee it.
Guarantee Charles Parkley.
I want to ask you something.
Guarantee.
Is it malpractice not putting Harry forward in this game?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Why are you not making your debut?
If he's not going to play here, when?
I don't get it.
I don't get it.
Well, maybe he'll play.
Oh, they have the day off tomorrow.
So you know what's going to happen?
he's going to get the start tomorrow against Chris Sale or excuse me Friday.
Friday.
Watch.
Watch.
That's what you're going to do.
Oh, and that's the manager that you have right now.
That's going to be your introduction is against that guy's slider.
I hate it.
I hate this baseball team right now.
I don't, you're not alone.
You're not alone, man.
It's amazing how fast we go from.
We're one month removed.
It was so fun.
It was like we were having World Series aspirations.
And I don't think it was over the top.
Not at all.
It was completely deserved based on going forward at the deadline,
getting the two best bats that were available,
getting your starting pitching healthy,
winning nine of ten in a row in a homestand.
Everything was pointing towards this team.
Finally getting over the hub.
100%.
And it's all come crashing down in less than a month.
It's, I don't understand.
No, it's insane.
And there's a lot of people to point fingers at.
You can do the whole pyramid, the whole pyramid, you can point fingers at every level
from ownership, making sure that this team didn't do enough at the very beginning of the season
to Jerry DePoto and Justin Hollander not doing enough at the beginning of the season with their
limited assets to the players who have just not been good enough to Dan Wilson.
And whatever level you want to put Wilson in players, it doesn't matter.
Yeah.
It's just not good enough.
Thank God.
We have a day off tomorrow.
Oh, yeah.
I need a break from this baseball team so bad.
Tell me, man.
I, uh, now I'm wondering what that team meeting was like just because.
Yeah.
Say it did nothing.
Okay, the other thing, did they bench Luke Raleigh?
I think they did.
That's what I think, too.
Why else was Swarres playing first base there?
Unless,
unless you're thinking about Swaras playing first base on Friday for some reason,
like, I don't know.
He had an awful error.
He did.
Is this Dan listening to the critics being like,
you have no fire, you won't do anything,
him benching Luke flipping Raleigh of all people?
You're kidding me?
By the way,
an absolutely pathetic game from Rayleigh before the benching.
Let's be honest about that.
I'm not saying it's good.
I'm not saying it didn't deserve it,
but it's like,
really?
That's how you're going to send your message?
I just don't know.
I don't know.
It's not good.
Hey,
you know what?
It's almost football season.
It is.
And we've gone long.
We'll talk to you guys again on Friday.
Really appreciate everyone hanging out with us today.
Please like the video if you haven't already.
Please give us something.
sure about okay thank you gill appreciate it um so it wasn't a benching dan wilson didn't come to
yeah now i'm not so sure you're a big ryan davish guy aren't you uh all right guys thanks so much
really appreciate uh everyone coming and drinking our tears uh if you're not a mariners fan you're
welcome um if you are a mariner's fan i'm sorry um and we'll talk to guys on friday chris sale lefty really good
pitcher yikes
