This is the Mariners Postcast.
Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners.
Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Thank you for making up for last night, Mariners.
Thank you for making up for last night, or yesterday, I should say.
But man, getting three out of four against the Texas Rangers is huge right after the trade deadline,
especially with them kind of coming on your tails a little bit.
Houston gets swept again for the second.
weekend in a row.
The Yankees get swept against the Marlins,
and the door is wide open for your Seattle Mariners.
So we're starting to walk through it, guys.
We're starting to walk through it.
And, you know, today's not without its warts, for sure.
But you get the dub.
And that's all that matters.
A massive throw by Cal Raleigh there in the ninth inning
to gun Sam Hagarty.
And then Andres Munoz coming up clutch when you absolutely need him to.
The Mariners win three out of four against Texas Rangers.
Five, four is the final score.
Some big home runs from Julio Rodriguez.
We'll talk about him a little later for sure.
Randy Rosarena and Jorge Polanco and J.P. Crawford.
I'm sorry, Randy didn't homer today.
Polanco did and J.P. Coffered.
But Randy still had a good day at the plate.
So just lots of good vibes going around, a good three out of four against Texas Rangers.
Chris Crawford, initial thoughts.
Can't overstate how big it is.
Can't overstate the difference between a series,
one in a split here because, you know, not only the disappointment that would come from losing
the final two games of the series, but just, you know, you look so good on Friday. You get that
amazing win, or excuse me, Thursday. You look so good Thursday. You get the crazy comeback on Friday.
Saturday, some things go a little weird. And then Sunday, you know, if you lose that one,
you're feeling pretty crappy. But we're not feeling crappy, folks. We are not feeling crappy.
at all because this was a nice, complete team win. And it's interesting because, yeah, there were some
more. But there were also, everybody kind of had a great moment today. There were a bunch of really
strong moments from the guys that you need strong moments from. And it's just, you know,
the Texas Rangers have to be wondering what we got to do to beat the Seattle Mariners,
even with the win yesterday, right? You got to be wondering, how the heck do we beat this baseball team?
this is a terrific win and it sets you up for a really good week.
Pleased his punch.
Yeah.
Chris Crawford, you're a JP's dad and JP is the Rangers daddy.
So therefore, the Rangers are your grandchild.
How do you feel about that?
They don't call very often.
They're that grandchild who just is waiting for me to send the $20 check every month.
So, you know, I still love them.
I still have to love all of my children and my grandchildren.
but they're not my favorite.
I'm going to do something a little different today.
Instead of going through the full game biggest moments,
I'm going to kind of go up and down the lineup
and ask your thoughts on their performance today.
But first, let's start with the start, Logan Evans.
So Logan Evans line isn't great, five innings of three-run baseball.
And again, I've brought this up before.
Five innings of three-run baseball doesn't sound terrible
until you think of the fact that it's a 5.4.0.
All right, right?
Like then it goes, oh, now having seven,
that if your fifth starter gives you five innings of three run baseball every time, you don't really
give a crap about that ERA. You'll take it. You know, okay, this is the best it can be. This is the
worst it can be. We can win a lot of games like this. That's not how baseball works. But that's,
that you would sign up for it. I also think it's worth pointing out that this could have easily
been five innings of shutout baseball because absolutely, absolutely 100 percent
Corey Seeger was struck out in the pitch before. Absolutely a totally. Absolutely a
atrocious job from the home plate umpire once again tonight it was disgusting it's disgusting and i'm
sick of it and then that ball has to be caught by randy rosserina that double has to be caught man
that is that is the adventures that we haven't seen as often as we thought we might from randy
rose arena but they were there they were there for sure so again i don't have a ton of trust in
Logan Evans, but we can only react to what we saw tonight.
What we saw tonight was good enough.
It was certainly good enough.
You outpitched Jacob de Grom.
Does some of that have to do with how Jacob de Grom pitched today?
Sure.
Absolutely it does.
But you did the job.
You did the job.
You kept your team in the game.
And outside of a couple of pitches here and there, I thought he pitched pretty solid.
Yeah.
I agree with you.
I think if you get that from your fifth starter, we've said it a lot.
If you get that from your fifth starter, I'm fine with that.
and against a decent Texas lineup.
I don't think they're amazing by any special imagination,
but it's not a terrible lineup either.
I think you're looking at a pretty league average offense
in terms of ability.
They're below that and all other numbers,
but I think they've come up recently as well.
So if you're able to get that line,
like you just said from your fifth starter
against a good offense and a game that you kind of needed to win,
I'm taking that every single day of the week.
All right, I mentioned I want to do something a little different today.
We normally would have gone to go through the big moments in the game.
We can mention those big moments, but I'm going to go one through nine.
And we're just going to talk about their performance today on the baseball field.
Randy Rosalena.
So, you know, we talked about the mistakes that he made in the outfield, but I thought
a really solid game.
You know, he gets the big walk to lead off the inning.
And that's kind of what I knew that DeGron wasn't going to be the same de Grom we've seen
for most of the year.
And Rangers fans will be quick to point out that he has not been great in his last
couple of outings. So, you know, taking advantage of that situation. But that's kind of what I knew.
And then that double was really big as well. The other thing I'll mention with Randy is,
I had joked about this on social media and I hope that it happened. Somebody sent me a DM that
they're making it. I need a t-shirt and I need a mug of the bro hug between Julio and Randam.
Yes, the two-oh thing. Yeah. Oh, that was so good. Well, that and also in the outfield,
they almost collide.
And Julio ends up giving a big,
or a ready gives up a big bear hug of that.
I need that too.
I need that on a mug and I need that on a t-shirt for sure.
Solid offensive game, you know.
I think he's looked fine in the leadoff spot.
I don't see any reason to make any changes in that regard.
I totally agree.
Cal, second, it's two whole.
So Cal had two really big moments today.
And, you know, it's worth pointing out,
he strikes out in that first at bat and you're saying,
oh boy, is this going to be one of those games?
Cal has two huge moments.
First of all, before Julio Homers,
the walk was an outstanding at bat.
And that's big, right?
Because it's a one-run baseball game.
And then that makes that a two-run homer instead of a solo shot.
Also, that throw, and I don't know how they missed it in the real time,
to be honest with you, it was pretty clear he was out right then and there.
That throw, Cal Rale is just a special baseball player.
And even after you have golden sombrero games,
and actually more than golden sombrero platinum sombrero games like he did yesterday he still finds a way to
make an impact right like he still finds that way to get something done awesome game from cowrallie
yeah good i just what i'll all say about him is like even if it feels like he's in a slump which he is
right now he finds ways like you said to impact the game uh with his defense whether it's with
a walk um and uh yeah he is not in the same stratosphere as he was in the first half the season at this
point in time, but that's fine.
This is what happens when you have a good lineup.
You don't have to have someone vying for the MVP for their entire season when you have
guys like Randy, like Julio, hopefully Suarez and Naylor.
And as I say that, Naylor in the four hole, O for four, two-ks.
Yeah, not the best, not the best.
But I will say you saw that they, I talked about his arm on that terrible throw he made on
the double play a couple days ago.
It's not a question of arm strength.
That guy has a cannon for an arm.
and he made sure that that runner doesn't get from second to third in a big moment in that
baseball game. So even there, somebody makes a little bit of an impact.
Yep. Now Suarez in the five holes. It seems like both Kim and Naylor, I honestly kind of expected
this when the trade came that they're going to take some time to get to get kind of used to
things here. It's just kind of what happens with baseball. When you see big moves,
it's just don't worry. I know I skipped Julio. We'll get back to that. Don't worry. We will get back to
that. But it just seems when, you know, these moves are made, especially mid-season, it's going
to take some time for these guys. Even though Suarez's been here, it's just, there's a comfort
factor getting used to the guys around either routine and everything. I don't doubt that
they're going to be really big parts of this offense moving forward. Yeah, absolutely. And, you know,
it's been a struggle for sure. And today was another example of those struggles. It was nice to see
he didn't strike out at all today. So that's, that's a positive. And he made a nice catch on a liner as
well. So it's just a matter of time. It's just a matter of time. And, you know, we've talked about it a lot that while we were even talking about the potential of getting him, Aohenio Suarez is a streaky offensive baseball player. So that's just what he is.
Yep. And I think I had some questions about his defense, maybe a little less than others, just in comparison to Ben Williamson. But his defense has been fine. It's been fine. Totally fine. He's been fine. There's been a couple of ground balls that I thought maybe one.
Williamson makes the play that he doesn't, but it's been fine. It's been fine.
And again, that is much more compliment to Ben Williamson than insult to Aohenio Suarez,
right? He doesn't have to be an elite defender as long as he's providing the offense that we're
expecting. Yeah. That hasn't happened over four games. It's four games, folks. It's four games. I think
aohenio Suarez is going to be fine. Yeah. Jorge Polanco, if it weren't for what Julio did today,
he'd be my player of the game. The dude is just as consistent as hell right now.
He's having good at bats up every single time he comes up.
He can drive the baseball again.
It's great to see.
And when you need him to play second base, he can do it.
So Jorge Polanco today.
Go ahead.
I mean, that Homer was just massive.
It was just massive.
To get off to a lead and to make that matter was important.
And he just looked so much more comfortable.
Now, we'll see what happens, right?
Because every time you feel like Polanco's in that groove,
something happens, be it injury.
And collie, I hope that's not what it is, or just being one of the worst players in baseball in May.
But this version of Jorge Polanco, the fact that Horpei Polanco is your sixth best hitter and you could argue seventh best hitter, seventh most important hitter is crazy.
It's crazy because this guy had to be your best hitter in April to really carry this team when other guys outside of Big Dumpur weren't hidden, right?
So like if this version of Jorge Polanco can just last a couple of more months.
By the way, and I know this is a long time away, I keep thinking, as much fun as I'm having
watching this team, how different this team could look next year because of all the free agents
that have on this team.
It's kind of crazy.
But this is kind of audition time for these guys too, which I think is a good thing.
Hopefully nobody is playing, um, trying to do too much, right?
because they want to get that long-term contract, right?
Like this will probably be Suarez's last long-term contract,
probably Polanco's last long-term contract as well.
So these are big time for these.
And hopefully that leads to opportunity for the Seattle Mariners over these final,
I believe, 49 games now?
Crazy.
Yeah.
Yeah, and I think it's a perfect combination of you're still playing for this year.
You're not playing or past that point.
Right.
He knows that there's something special brewing.
And if they do things, the way they're supposed to do,
that this could be a magical season.
And if they just allow things to happen, I think there's a good kind of dichotomy with how they're viewing, you know, taking the approach, both at the plate and then the field, however you want to look at it.
But if we do what we're supposed to do, then we're going to have that contract ready for us coming in the off season.
We just need to go win games now.
Dom Kenza.
Pretty nondescript game.
Just draw the one walk.
I was glad that he was able to score.
You know what?
Nondescript isn't fair because he draws that walk and what happens to play after, right?
So that is big. That is big. Like guys getting on base for these boppers right now is going to be important.
And yeah, I guess I'm including Crawford as a bopper right now. Yeah. That's big. That's big, man. You've got to get on base. And that's one thing, Canzone's really done a solid job this year.
Really good. 340 on base percentage will play and then some. So yeah, the power has kind of sapped a little bit as of late. But I love the fact that he's taking quality of bats minus a few that can kind of drive you crazy. The defense drives me.
crazy, but a big walk there to set up the big moment.
JP Crawford, another home run.
I'm so proud of my son.
I'm so proud of my son.
Like the fact, and okay, that pitch, J.P.
Marosi should have hit that baseball out.
It was right down the middle of the frigging plate.
Okay.
So like, let's not take that away.
Having said that, J.P.
Crawford's starting to take advantage of mistakes again.
JP Crawford is starting to take advantage of those mistakes.
And the reason that's big is when you take advantage of mistakes,
you are more careful pitching around him.
And we know Crawford's plate discipline is going to be a thing, right?
Yeah, yeah.
The question is going to be whether or not they feel comfortable keeping him in this eighth spot if this keeps going, right?
Because his on-base bill skills can be elite.
Like, elite doesn't even begin to state it.
One of the best in the league, yes.
One of the absolute best in this league, any league, really.
So like, what do they do?
What do they do here?
Personally, I like how things are going.
I like how things are going too.
So, you know, if Randy struggles in that leadoff spot, if, you know, you have to make some changes,
if Cal doesn't like hitting in the two hole, you know, if that's something that you need to change,
then, okay, maybe you consider moving Crawford up, but I sure do like having him in that eight spot right now.
Plus, it just feels like, I don't know, with your lineup and how long it is,
and we'll get to why we're doing this, you know, format in terms of our postcast.
just a second. But I love the vibe of like, okay, you have, you go through the kind of the meat of
your order where there's Randy through Polanco. Right. Canzone's still getting on base,
like you said. He can still mash it out every once in a while. Then you get JP. And then
Cole Young, who's also been hitting well, and we'll get to him in a second. But then you're already
at the top of the order again. That's what having a long lineup does, guys. This is why it's so,
and it screws with pitchers. Yeah. Good pitchers like Jacob de Grom, where it's like,
like, okay, you have to kind of pick and choose your moments.
Ryan Will and Smith talked about this yesterday.
You have to pick and choose your moments to like attack guys versus pitch around guys.
And you can't, there's not really a full on weak point in this lineup right now
where you can just be like, all right, I get this out and then we'll kind of get back around
of that.
No, even the bottom of the lineup, JP Crawford's mashing.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's a great point.
And, you know, it's just, it's so nice to not have automatic outs.
It's so nice that even guys who don't get on base at a huge clip are guys,
who that you got to be careful with, right?
And like that leads to Cole Young, who doesn't have a very good offensive day today,
but a really nice job on that play in the ninth inning.
Two of them, getting that tag down and then also, oh boy,
when J.P. Crawford flubbed that baseball, I was, I was mad.
And here's the thing.
The first angle they showed, it looked like he was safe, right?
I thought it was like, oh, crap.
But then they showed that angle from the other side,
and it was relatively clear that he was out, right?
But a great job getting that tag down.
The job that he's done defensively since replacing Ryan Bliss,
who was doing a very nice job defensively as well,
has been huge, plus there's much more offensive upside and Cole Young's back.
Yeah, I just, I love what he's doing right now.
I think he's playing the nine-hole guy who can rip a homer if you leave him one out over the plate.
He'll still hit when you need him to,
but if he's your worst hitter on your lineup, I'll take that every single.
time and he's doing his job defensively to still bring value.
All right, we're going to take a quick break.
Give some love for our sponsors, then we'll talk about some history.

Today's episode is brought to you by Game Day Hugh,
and so is this hat that I'm wearing.
For the Cracken, for in this case, fans like me,
this one hits the mark.
Game Day Hugh makes clean, no logo gear
with team-inspired colorways for every pro in college fan base.
It's all about letting your color speak,
for you. No giant logos, just smart, versatile style that works on Game Day on the course or
anywhere in between. I love that. I love the ability to have something that I feel comfortable
wearing on the course. I'd feel comfortable wearing it at the stadium. But I just feel comfortable
wearing it to a barbecue or wearing it to a business meeting. You know, when you don't have that big
logo, you can get away with that a lot more. So that's a nice thing from Game Day Hugh. Right. I can get 15%
off the code MLB15 at gameday hue.com.
That's game day hue.com.
The code even stacks on bundle deals.
So now's the time to load up.
Let your colors talk because colors speak louder than words.
That's gameday hue.com code MLB 15.
All right.
We buried the lead a little bit.
Julio Rodriguez,
first player in MLB history to have a 2020 season in his first four years.
And he does it on August 3rd.
He's starting to heat up big time.
And yes, there's some.
you know, I don't want to say caveat,
but there's a little bit of a different lens,
especially with all the stolen bases that you're getting in today's game.
So like 20 stolen bases now is different than 20 stolen bases 15 years ago.
Totally understand, but it's still history.
And I think the bigger story is just how he's looking at the play.
He looks a lot more comfortable.
Also make some great catches in the outfield, too.
Just talk about your boy, because I can't even begin.
Yeah, it was a special game.
It was a special game.
And it was pretty cool to see that he gets to 2020 on the same day that he hits his 100th home run, right?
Like that's pretty cool as well. And, you know, he's on pace to do some pretty special stuff in his career, right?
Like, as frustrating as sometimes the offensive lulls have been, he's still on pace to do some awfully special things as a 24-year-old who doesn't turn 25 until it's either December 30th or 31st.
I should know my best friend's birthday. But great game. And that catch in the outfield, too.
man like that is such a difficult play to make man and he just misses robin a home or two that ball
just kept fading and it kept fading and because i was shocked it got out really surprised i was like
the way it kind of went off the bat was like okay like almost lazy fly to left center field
and that just shows how strong corey seger is right like that guy has enormous strength he came
this close to having that home run robbery as well.
But it's just great.
And it's great to see a moment like that at home.
And, you know, that homer, that's a really difficult thing to do.
Not only was it a 98, 99 mile per hour fastball,
to take it opposite field to one of the deepest parts of the park is insane, man.
It is one of the reasons why Team Mobile is such a hard park to hit in.
A lot of these strong right-handed hitters like to go up.
opposite way for home runs because you can let the ball travel, right? But with T-Mobile,
380 to right-center field makes it really tough to do that, right? And there's enough outfield
room, unfortunately, that a lot of those balls that you think would get in the gap get caught.
So that's tough. So to take that ball out to right-center field in a huge moment, too,
So whether you believe in momentum or not, the rain years, the Rangers had the momentum there, right?
It was two to one and you weren't feeling great about how Logan Evans looked in that inning.
But then Big Dumper draws that walk and Julio Rodriguez just smashes that baseball.
And you know what else I loved?
That he got a hit in the next abat too, a nice line drive single into right field.
Colwyn got him.
Colwyn's a really talented pitcher.
He could have a very nice career in this league.
But this was a terrific game from a superstar.
This is the type of thing that we need to see from Julio Rodriguez for the next seven weeks.
I'm not sure if you know this, but do you know when the last home run that Julio hit at home was?
Oh, boy, it's got to be a while.
May 28th.
Was that a guess?
Yes.
May 27th.
Oh, dang it.
Holy crap.
That's a long time.
man.
Yes.
And, you know, it doesn't surprise me thinking about it because June was just such a month
where he just could not drive the baseball.
Yeah.
That's great.
That's great to see that ball travel over the fence because he's hit for a decent
average, you know, at home over the last few weeks.
And that's fine.
But boy, we need to see that ball travel over the fence.
It's so nice to see it changes the game.
It changes the game when he can, and, you know, steals the base today too.
He can change the game when he gets those singles as well.
but when you're driving the baseball like he did today,
some pretty special stuff.
Should we really quickly talk about the bullpen?
Yeah, I was going to go next.
Go ahead.
Oh, this is, it makes me even more frustrated that they didn't go to Caleb Ferguson
earlier today because, or Saturday, because he was.
Because he was nasty today.
He was nasty today.
Carlos Vargas, you know, he does give up the Homer.
And I have to admit, I missed that Homer.
Yeah.
The Adoles Garcia home.
I was a terrible pitch.
No, that's what I heard was, and, you know,
somebody suggested that Garcia just put a little swing on it and got out and take advantage of the
velocity, you know, that he's certainly strong enough, a guy who's been in the home run derby a
couple of times that he can do something like that, but a really nice job in that sixth inning, right,
or excuse me, the seventh inning on a day where they were so depleted in the bullpenes,
so depleted, nice job from him.
And then Andres Munoz, I got to talk about this now because, you know, he draws, throws the walk.
I kind of wonder if Matt Brash and Andres Munoz are tipping pitches right now.
Because these guys are laying off elite sliders right now, like elite sliders and just,
they should, this shouldn't be happening.
This should not be happening.
I saw some takes and some foul balls on some pitches like,
how the heck did you know that was coming and how the heck did you make that contact there,
right?
Maybe it's not even pitch tipping.
Maybe there's a sequencing thing going on where teams,
know what's coming. Either way, it's interesting, but I thought Munoz pitch terrific.
You know, he issues that lead off walk and then the weak little ground ball.
Thank you for trying to steal Sam Haggerty. I know a lot of Mariner fans love you, but to me,
that was kind of a bad decision. And then the slider to get Langford was just nasty, nasty work.
So, you know, is Andrece Munoz pitching as well as he did earlier in the season? I don't think so.
But I still have a ton of confidence in this guy in the ninth inning.
Today was an example why.
Yeah, and I think, like, especially when you have two elite pitches like Munoz does,
it's for some guys, you're just keying in on one.
And this is total speculation.
I have no idea what's going on.
100%.
If you are just keying in on the slider because you know that he can sometimes hang that a little bit,
and it's probably more likely you get to that than the rising fastball,
then you just look for any sort of spin.
in and then that's the one you're going on.
Maybe he is tipping it.
I know it has been an issue when there's guys on second base.
Right.
There was the big Yankees thing about guys like jumping up and clapping.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's my exercise for the day, by the way.
The thing for me is more with Brash, right?
Because he does not hang sliders.
He does not hang sliders.
He also very rarely throws it in the strike zone.
So maybe teams are just like either protect like crazy because I wouldn't rewatch that game
yesterday because I'm a masochist.
Man, the pitches that brash through were terrific pitches.
They just dinked and dunked and dinked and dug.
And in fact, Legamina, those pitches that they threw weren't bad pitches either.
There was no hard contact there.
It's a lot of luck, too.
Like, they weren't squaring it up.
No, they got babit to death, man.
That happens sometimes.
But it is interesting just because I have not seen the same swing and miss totals from Braschen,
Munoz lately. So I do wonder if there's a little bit of sequencing thing there. And Matthew brings up
his slider velocity is only like 85 now. I mean, that's a big difference. You know what I mean? Because
that's substantially different than what the fastball is right now. So maybe that's just a little bit
easier to pick up. And it used to be like 90, 91 sort of in that range with Munoz. So yeah, I mean,
that could definitely be something too, whether it's, you know, just a slight mechanics switch or
or something like that.
I don't know.
It's a small quarrel for today.
You went three out of four against the Rangers.
You gained four and a half games on Houston in the last, what, beginning of July.
Okay, I thought it was going to be a lot quicker than that.
But still, four and a half games in about a month's time, like, that's, that'll do.
That'll do don't eat.
Two and a half games is all that we're talking about here.
I will say this too, by the way.
Boy, the Mariners need that day off tomorrow.
Oh, yes.
they need that day off tomorrow, something fierce.
And, you know, the White Sox are starting to swing the bats a little bit better.
Anything but two out of three here is going to be a massive disappointment, a massive disappointment.
You're just substantially better than that baseball team.
And you should put up some nice offensive numbers over this week.
All right.
So tune in, like I said, day off tomorrow.
But we need it, too, by the way.
We're just gracious.
Especially you.
Like, I took Thursday off.
was able to get a little bit squeezed in there.
But I just wanted to make sure that everyone knew that I'm the lazy one on you.
We'll be back to you guys on Tuesday.
Who was the next series?
I haven't even looked yet.
The White Sox.
It's the White Sox.
And then it's the Raves who are not really in contention anymore.
You know, these are teams.
Especially with Jonathan Miranda.
He hurts a lot.
A thousand percent.
These are big games.
This is anything but a four and two week.
And we'll talk about it on Maliwatt Monday tomorrow.
But absolutely tune in 93.
3KJRFM with Ian Furness, myself, Christopher Crawford and Nathan Bishop.
At 1.20 p.m. Pacific time, if you so please.
And of course, catch Ty and Colby.
They'll recap this whole weekend series, kind of in a bigger picture sort of view.
We do daily podcasts here on the postcast.
And then, of course, you still get your Lockdown Mariners content with those two.
If you like one of us better, please tell the other ones so that we can kind of rub it in their face.
That sounds good.
I really appreciate you guys hanging out with us.
every single day here.
Enjoy the day off tomorrow.
Mariners baseball is fun.
Let's keep it rolling.
Sound good?
That sounds great.
Do you have any of the last words
while I'm trying to find my closing picture here?
Go Mariners.
Go Mariners.
