Episode Date: September 2, 2025

Anders and Chris break down the first game of the three-game series against the Rays. Luis Castillo was hurt by the ridiculousness that is the High-A Tampa park, but wasn't effective. Other than that ...it was a terrific baseball game that everyone enjoyed.   Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Trade CoffeeRight now, Trade is exclusively offering our customer 50% off your one-month trial at drinktrade.com/LOCKEDONMLB. OpenPhoneStreamline and scale your customer communications with OpenPhone. Starting point is 00:00:04 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Well, the boys are not locked in right now. I think it's safe to say this one was a bad baseball game. The Mariners, as of right now, this is just my general observation. They're playing more like a team that's 10 games out of it and just kind of being like, Yeah, if something happens, it happens.
Starting point is 00:00:38 You know, we'll see. But, you know, we're kind of going through the motions here. Not the team that is in the final wildcard spot with the Rangers on their ass. All right. It's, I hate to bring this up almost every episode. But it just seems like, of all the things we point out, like facts about the situation that's going on, we'll get to that in a sec. I can too many times I logically go to the manager.
Starting point is 00:01:06 So we'll talk about that here in a second. Bad start from Luis Castillo, bad offensive day besides the last inning. And just a bad baseball game against the team you should be beating. Again, this is what we said in Cleveland as well. So Chris Crawford, what are your thoughts about today's game? I mean, I'm glad you brought it up because I was definitely going to as well. But I may have forgotten because I'd like to forget this game as soon as possible. there was this lack of urgency
Starting point is 00:01:40 in the game. There was just, and you know, I'm not saying that they should have pulled Castillo earlier. I'm not even saying that I have any issues with any of the bullpen decisions that they made. It just was a general lack of malaise that I think has permeated the air of the Mariners. I said malaise and permeated within,
Starting point is 00:02:02 Whoa! Writer alert. Yeah, something. them like that. Not good. Just not good. And it's so disappointing to see this after what I thought was a really well-played game on Sunday to come back into Tampa Bay or to come into Tampa Bay.
Starting point is 00:02:22 And just none of that mattered yesterday. None of that mattered whatsoever. Every aspect of this team today was poor. Every single aspect of this team was poor. and that generally leads to 10-2 blowouts and 10-2 is misleading. They should have been shut out. Yeah, completely agree. Good for Leo Rivas.
Starting point is 00:02:43 That's an awesome home run. He should start at shortstop tomorrow just for that. I'm not even joking at this point. I think he would be a better option than J.P. Crawford right now. But so what I mentioned with the manager, I want to get your thoughts on this before we get to Kestio. because I don't know, man. I realize it seems like it's very cherry-picking. When they win, we say everything goes right except the manager.
Starting point is 00:03:13 And then when they lose, we point to the manager. When I just look at the facts of the situation, I believe the Mariners have at least a top five talent roster in the American League, probably top three, to be completely honest. And you're losing on the road. you're losing in delays. You're uncompetitive, even in, you know, semi-close games. It seems like once it's not close, not a one or two-run game, it's like, all right,
Starting point is 00:03:45 game's over. Let's kind of check out and play again tomorrow. These are all just things that lead me to believe, like, the guy that's supposed to be getting this team mentally prepared to play a baseball game is not doing his job. And that's taking away all of the in-game decisions, which we've already talked a bunch about. So I just want to know what your thoughts are on that because this has happened too many times, man. You did not see this team do this under Scott Service. No, that's totally fair.
Starting point is 00:04:15 And again, I had no issues really with the decision to Scott Service. It was time. Sometimes you just need a new voice. My question is if this is the right voice. And the thing about this show in particular, Anders, is we get the privilege. to be reactionary. Like that's our job. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:04:35 We react to what we see every single game. And there are too many games like this. There are just too many efforts where the effort just doesn't look like it's there. The fight just doesn't look like it's there. And, you know, they need someone to kick them in the took us, I think, right now. And I think sometimes we overrate that. Sometimes we have a tendency to say, oh, I'm a manager. are supposed to be big of fiery and brimstone guy.
Starting point is 00:05:03 This job is to motivate his players and keep them happy and cohesive for 162 games while not making terrible decisions in the meantime. I don't know if there's a ton of examples of him not, of doing a good job of that in 2025. I just don't. And I do not believe the Mariners are winning because of Dan Wilson. That's what I will go to end up saying is the Mariners may not be in the position solely based on Dan Wilson? Of course they're not. Like, horrible.
Starting point is 00:05:35 Players got to do their job, right? Yeah. Yeah. And your team did not do. I don't have any issues with any managerial decisions Dan Wilson made today. No. Other than the fact that they just didn't look ready to play. Yeah. And like, this is more of a general aspect. We'll zoom in here in just a second. Ty Dan Gonzalez tweeted this out a couple days ago. You guys might have heard of him. He's on Locked on Mariners. This podcast is pretty good. The players apparently love playing for him
Starting point is 00:06:01 But do they love playing for him Because they actually respect him as a leader Or because he has substitute teacher energy Yeah I could not agree with that more Like honestly it kind of seems like the latter to me Yeah there's just There just seems to be
Starting point is 00:06:15 And you know this is one of those things where A bigger picture This is one of those things where Donovan Solano Not being on this roster That's a little concerning to me right Because he's kind of one of the adults in the room I'll do respect to some of these other guys. And, yeah, we'll see how this all plays out.
Starting point is 00:06:33 Yep, I'm very interested. Let's not start with the start because we started with some other stuff, but I just wanted to get that immediate reaction out there. But Luis Castillo, another bad outing. He hasn't pitched good since July. What's going on with him? For me, it's the velocity. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:50 Like, when you're a fastball heavy pitcher as much as he is, and we've said this is the last three starts now. Yeah. And you're 93 to 90s. 94, 95 maybe versus 96 to 98. That's a big difference. That's a huge difference. Huge difference.
Starting point is 00:07:06 And, you know, I will say that number one, this wasn't good enough, not even close to good enough. Obviously, four innings of five run baseball isn't good enough for anyone, especially someone who has expectations like Luis Castillo. Number two, I thought he pitched better than the line suggests. Let's go over the second inning real quick, okay? Because first inning looks great. Luis Castillo, and I'm like, okay, this is great.
Starting point is 00:07:30 It's the first two outs of the second inning. Feeling pretty good. A little base hit knock from Jake Mangum. Infield, yeah. I like somebody to make that play, you know? I'd like somebody to make that play. And then I believe he either hits or walks a batter for the second, put the second guy on.
Starting point is 00:07:51 You can let me know. Again, I'm trying. Walks. Okay, so he is used to walk. To Vichie Palacios. Yeah, some questionable calls on that walk, to be fair. Like, you know, like, and then he makes a good pitch to Nick Cortez. And Nick Cortez hits a home run that would have been out in exactly one part.
Starting point is 00:08:13 I'm not making excuses for Luis Castillo, not even close. Then the next inning, I want Randy Rosarina very much back on the Seattle Mariners next year. if he's back for me next year, he's my designated hitter. He can't play out. That ball has to be freaking caught. That ball has to be caught. You have to make a play for your struggling pitcher. You have to.
Starting point is 00:08:40 Randy or Rosarina is a bad outfielder. We sung his praises when he was getting some stuff done earlier in the air. And then he quickly reminded us, oh, this is the reason why he's always a two to three win player because the offense is well above average and the defense sucks monkey, whatever word you want to use afterwards. It's bad. It's bad. That ball has to be caught. That looked like someone taking advantage of a little league left fielder where they're like, let's just hit it to this guy because it's going to go over his head. Again, Luis Castillo was not
Starting point is 00:09:12 good enough today. It would have been nice if he got a semblance of help, just even a little iota of help. But he didn't. He didn't. And Luis Castillo didn't. And Luis Castillo didn't. pitch well enough to overcome that. And I am absolutely, just like everyone else, concerned about Luis Castillo for the rest of the year, because I need to see an actual quality start before I can believe it. Yeah. And for those asking for Luis Castillo to be taken out of the rotation, it's not going to happen. It's not going to happen. Number one, based off of, not based off of his salary, they just won't do that. But that's not even the main reason why. It's because there's no one else. He will be better than Logan Evans would.
Starting point is 00:09:55 You saw Emerson Hancock tonight in a bullpen roll still struggled, by the way. Yeah. You're not going to get anything better than Louise Castillo. Unfortunately, he's just not as good as he used to be. No. He's your fourth or fifth starter right now. And let's remember too, but before August, we were talking about how great Luis Castillo was. This is four bad starts, guys.
Starting point is 00:10:17 I'm concerned because I don't know how this is going to finish, right? Yes. Based on how things have gone, I am extremely skeptical that Luis Castillo, is more than a back-end starter. Correct. And right now he's worse than a back-end starter. He's a guy that if he was, if this was Logan Evans,
Starting point is 00:10:33 we'd be talking about sending him to AAA. Let's just be completely honest, right? Yeah, yeah. But you can't just completely ignore the first 20 or whatever it was from Luis Castillo either. You can't do that. No. Luis Castillo is a reason why,
Starting point is 00:10:48 a major reason why, I might even argue the second biggest reason why in your pitching staff, that you are still in the position, that you're in. So let's not go completely crazy. Some idiot tried to tell me that Luis Castillo was stealing money from the Seattle Mariners and I just about called in the National Guard because, and for me, like to put me away, go put me away because I'm going to go do something stupid. Oh, man. He's not stealing money from the Mariners, you absolute income poop. He's got to be better though. There's no question about it that Luis Castillo has to be much better if,
Starting point is 00:11:25 the Mariners are going to make the postseason. Yeah. No such of urgency tonight. Mariners lose 10 to 2 against a raised team that showed more fight than them. And they have a much less chance to make the playoffs. Like, it's go time, guys. We can't be just waiting for the series at home against the teams that are in front of you. You've got to beat the teams. Amen.
Starting point is 00:11:44 Like that are behind you, that whoever you're playing, you've got to win series, bro. Like, it's just how it goes. Let's get some love to our sponsors. Then we'll talk about the offense. Sound good, Chris Crawford. I guess we have to. Yeah, we have. Hey, Locked on Mariners fans, are you still paying full price for gas?

Starting point is 00:14:35 Mayor's postcast Anderson Hurst, Christopher Crawford with you. We're going to break down every single Mariner game as we already have throughout the season. Even these stinkers like today. The Mariners lose 10 to 2 against the Tampa Bay Rays get outplayed in every facet of the game for arguably the fourth straight game. And it's against teams that are worse than you. So I don't know where to start offensively, Chris. But if you have something you want to mention, just go ahead.
Starting point is 00:15:03 It was just terrible up and down the lines tonight. Here's what I'll just tell you. This is where hits don't tell the story. Because the Mariners get 10 hits in this game, they were absolutely dominated by a pitcher who I believe had an ERA of seven in his home ballpark this year in Shane Boss. Like getting beat by the albino worker from me, myself, and Irene is a bad look, guys. Like that's that's not what you're looking for at all. And I like Shane Boss as a long-term option, but he's been pretty dreadful this year. Yes.
Starting point is 00:15:32 He worked you. He absolutely worked yet. I mean, you get two hits from Randy, you get two hits from Cal, you get two hits from Suarez and Rivas are the only guys today who can hold their help time. I know, I know J.P. Crawford gets a couple of weak little singles, too. I'm tired. I'm not going to praise J.P. Crawford from what I've seen lately. I'm sorry, I'm just not going to do it.
Starting point is 00:15:52 Love you, my son, but it's just not working out right now. Do you? Do you love him? I do love him. I love him unconditionally. It is, it's just rough watching him hit right now. now. And Field. Ed Field. And Field. He makes the tent there today. And, you know, Emerson Hancock didn't look good. Taylor Shasetto didn't look good. I guess my unsung. Okay. I'll give him my unsung
Starting point is 00:16:17 hero. Thanks for saving the bullpen a little bit. It doesn't matter when you're going to get your butt kicked the way they're playing right now. But that's just the way it feels, guys. They may win tomorrow 26 to negative 7. And I'll feel great about this team again. But right now, this feels low. This feels so low. And it's the hardest part about doing a daily show is that you let out those feels. You have to tell people how you're feeling about the stupid baseball theme sometimes. And it just wasn't good enough. The at bats today at times were borderline pathetic. Yeah, I'll go on saying here atino. It gets two doubles. It's two balls hard. Like he's about as consistent top to bottom. I mean, obviously Leo Rivas comes in and hits the homer. Good for him.
Starting point is 00:17:02 by the way, first career major league home run, got to shout him out. I mentioned like when you asked who should be called up. I said Leo Rivas kind of like just tongue and cheat, not tongue and cheat, but just like, I don't know who else it would be sort of thing. Sure. Yeah. But he's been ranking in AAA. It's good to see that hopefully those results can carry over to the major leagues.
Starting point is 00:17:18 I always liked what he was able to do. Sure. Back to Gino, though. It seems like he's kind of coming out of it a little bit. Just at the right time for everyone else to be coming down because Julio was bad, Cal was bad. Naylor has looked awful recently. Randy, not great.
Starting point is 00:17:35 Just, I don't know, man. You can't get a shut out for eight and two-thirds innings or eight-and-a-third innings or whatever it was. In a high-a ballpark, it can't happen. It doesn't matter what excuses you give. You cannot get shut out when you're playing in the Florida, gosh-dam state league. It can't happen. It's pathetic. Yeah, and I'm seeing people in the comment section
Starting point is 00:18:03 like mentioning that it's the Gavin Williams effect Like so many mistake pitches there just but this is the part where I also think They're just not ready to play because they're not ready to hit either It's not just in the field it's not just mental errors on the base paths It translates to your at-bats as well and it shows like Shane Bosb didn't slice and dice you up today with great stuff No he did not deserve to go six innings of shutout baseball He did not, by the way you pitched.
Starting point is 00:18:32 You just had awful at bats. This team is not ready to play baseball. And there's what, 23 games left? That is inexcusable, man. That is inexcusable. It can't happen. And you can tell me all you want about how they all matter the same. No, that's bull crap.
Starting point is 00:18:49 They matter a hell of a lot more right now. And right now, I'll tell you this, if I could give another unsung hero, go Arizona Diamondbacks. Yeah, they're up right now, aren't they? They're up five to three, so hopefully they only lose the half game ground on the royals who don't play. Unsung villain, Rob Manfred. It's gosh damn Labor Day. Either everybody plays or nobody plays.
Starting point is 00:19:13 Figure it out. Why is there only like 10 games today? That's so freaking stupid. Either everyone plays on a holiday or no one plays on a holiday. Figure it out, you troglodyte. That's a great. Great. You know what?
Starting point is 00:19:28 If there's anything possible, that comes from today, it's that I learned a new insult. It's troglodyte from Chris Cros. It's not a very nice one either. Sorry, Robbie. No, no, you're not sorry. Barriers lose this one 10 to 2. Brian Woodamorrow, correct?
Starting point is 00:19:45 Let's hope our, honestly, our ace can figure it out and stop this kind of skid. I realize he won yesterday, but to me it's still a skid because this team just doesn't look good on the road. I'm sorry. I don't know if it's just, you know, travel logistics. I don't know if it's your manager. I don't know if it's just the temperature and the plane. I don't get it.
Starting point is 00:20:08 I really, really don't. It just does not seem to be computing with these guys. Hopefully they can figure it out tomorrow because, man, I am tired of giving you guys these postcasts for the last few nights. And I'm sure Chris is too from Friday. I'm tired of it. And now I have to draft with Bucky Dang Jacobson in a football league. So I'm just not in a very good mood.
Starting point is 00:20:29 And please play ball tomorrow. Please play well tomorrow so I can have some sanity. Play ball and play well, both of those. I'm down for that. All right. Thanks so much, guys. We really appreciate it. Another 435 tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:20:43 We'll check in with you guys right after the game. Marriors Postcast. If you missed any part of today's episode, you can find it anywhere you get your podcasts. Like the video if you haven't already. Even if you're pissed to marriage, you can like us because we like you. Like kind of a little symbiotic relationship. So we'll talk to you guys tomorrow. Go Mariners. Have a good night.
