I'm Chris Crawford.
I didn't watch a second of this thing,
but I bet my anders, my buddy, my Anders buddy did,
and he's got some stuff to stay.
Apparently I am owned by Chris Crawford now because I am,
I am in possession of him.
But yeah, no, Buena.
Not a great Walter performance.
Not a great offensive performance.
But we'll talk about this one.
Maybe a little role reversal today.
How are feeling guys?
I'm going to hit the button.
Do it.
This is the Mariners Postcast.
Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners.
Part of the Locked-on podcast network, your team every day.
Hello, locked on people.
My name is Chris Crawford.
I'm joined today by Anderson Hurst.
We're role reversing today because for those of you who live in Mason County,
you may not have had power either because some idiot drove into a transmission thing.
So my power literally, and I mean literally, came on maybe 45 seconds before we started recording.
So I'm going to ask Anders to questions.
I know that the Mariners lose five nothing.
I know that the offense probably didn't look good.
I'm guessing that Logan Gilbert didn't look great.
But I'm going to ask Anders about it.
And I'm going to ask Anders his first thoughts about this game.
Yeah.
Thank you, Chris.
You're welcome.
Coming on with you here on the Mariners Postcast.
But it's good to be here, like the role reversal.
You've got to switch it up sometimes when the Mariners aren't making things exciting.
We've got to make things exciting ourselves here on the Mariner's podcast.
Not great from Walter.
I have a bigger conversation with him and you guys in the chat.
Because I'm curious, if you were to rank your starting pitchers by
order of confidence starting a theoretical playoff game at this point.
I want to know where he would be after tonight.
I know, Chris, you didn't watch, so maybe you wouldn't be able to answer it as much
as a lot of other people would.
But I'm honestly just curious because I've seen a wide range of opinions on him.
I think my answer is starting to change from what it was at the end of last year and
then going into this year as well.
so I'll just put it that way.
But the offense is not good.
You know, we were kind of iffy on, you know, the left-handed pitching,
how they would do against that.
Max Freed's a really good, really good starter, like, really dang good.
And I think it's the type of starter that really does not,
that this Mariners team does not do well against.
He's, he doesn't blow you away with a lot of his stuff,
but he knows how to pitch.
He puts, he sequels his really, really well.
He uses his defense behind him.
He can get the strikeout pitch when he absolutely needs it.
And he's a gold glove guy on the mound.
So I don't think that it was a good matchup whatsoever.
They showed the little graphic that he has dealt against the Mariners before.
But his last three starts, even though he went six innings, zero ones, one run, zero runs.
He got zero wins out of that because of how the Mariners are pitching against him.
But today he ends up absolutely dealing, going through seven shutouts.
innings. So yeah, just in general, wondering what you guys think about Logan's start
wasn't very impressed. And I think if you had questions about Logan Gilbert and his season
last year, there can be a lot to be said about his results versus kind of what the underlying
numbers said. He hasn't done a lot in the early going to put those questions away, is all I can say.
So I have to ask you about the defense because we were.
in a text chain together with some other folks.
And it sounds like Victor Robles may have gotten lost on the way to the stadium today in the
first inning.
And then I also heard that Cal Raleigh made a Brendan Donovan throw on a stolen base.
How much do we have to blame the defense here?
And the reason I ask here is, this is just me nerd and out.
I look at a guy who generated 14 swings and misses who was throwing 97 to 98 for most of the
game.
But ultimately, it is a game of results.
and you give up five runs, how much of the blame do we have to give the defense here?
Definitely a significant amount.
And I don't know if this is one of those things where it just happens to happen to
happen to Logan Gilbert more often than not.
We saw that with Felix a lot as well during his prime,
where he would pitch gems and then, you know, either he would get Felix,
which is a verb for a reason where the office would do literally nothing.
Or, you know, you have a couple defensive air, like mishaps here and there.
The Robles situation was weird.
It seemed like that's how they scored their first run, by the way.
It was like a skying pop-up from Stanton, I want to say.
And it seemed like he was very much in right center field.
And he had a long way to go.
But still, someone of Robles' caliber, who I've been singing the praise of defensively,
I would expect to make that play.
And he kind of, I don't want to say, dogs it to the spot.
but he kind of gave up on it pretty early, I will say.
And it seemed like something where you don't see from him very much.
He seems like he can make that play if he kind of goes all out on that.
Now I realize where we are in the season and stuff like that.
But the Cal Raleigh was almost more surprised in me because that was a terrible throw.
That wasn't even close.
Now, he does gun someone earlier in the game.
I forget who it was.
I think it was Jazz Chisholm at second base.
He absolutely, like literally the perfect throw where Reh,
Ross doesn't even have to tag. He catches it and it's already in the tagging position.
So that was a good throw from him. But then a couple innings later, it cost him to,
arguably two runs because one run scores on the air and then on the next batter.
You could have gotten the out, got out of the inning, but the next batter, you know,
hits the runner in from there. So it ends up costing two runs. And that's a throw that
Cal were used to seeing him make. And, you know, he had a great season offensively last year,
but he did take a step back defensively.
A little bit.
I was curious to see how his defense would look in the early going this year.
And, you know, it's obviously too early to draw conclusions,
but that's not a throw that I'm used to see in a make.
No, I've again, in the text thread, a different text thread of this one.
I have like eight friends and all of them are apparently talking to me about
Marinette baseball said it was just a disaster of a throw, which is disappointing.
The bullpen, three and two-thirds innings of scoreless baseball,
strikeouts, including everyone's favorite, Casey Beans, one and two third scoreless
innings.
But Cole Wilcox, two winnings, three strikeouts.
I'm intrigued by Wilcox, Anders, because this one's a guy who was pretty highly touted
coming out of his draft out of Tennessee and used to throw incredibly hard.
Doesn't have that same velocity anymore.
How did he look?
I think it looked really good.
You know, gets the two strikeouts, three strikeouts, excuse me.
It does get two hits against him, but kind of bloopy, so to speak.
Okay.
It ends up getting out of it when he needs to.
I think it looked decent.
You know, this is just a classic Mariners situation where they find this absolute no-name
pitcher, not known-name to you, apparently, because I didn't know who this guy was.
And turn him into maybe a little development project here.
Now, I will say, there and Judge, line one that I think,
went 150 miles an hour off his, off his head.
I think he just barely grazed it with his glove as it went.
And Leo Rivas literally catches the deflection at second base.
That's how hard it was hit.
So he ends up being okay.
He was walking off just fine, doesn't need any help or anything like that.
But that was kind of a whoa, hello.
And that reminds me, if you're to look at Aaron Judge's stateline from tonight,
oh for four with two Ks.
Nice.
And I think if you look at the whole first two games of this series, you've done really well against arguably the game's best hitter.
But you don't have a ton to show for it.
You get one to win yesterday.
But, you know, drop this one today.
So obviously, I think you're going to try some things when you're down by five at that point.
And I think it looks pretty good.
That's great.
That's nice to see.
And it's nice to see a literal saving of the bullpen, you know, a guy who can go multiple innings is also nice, too.
because the Mariners, outside of Cooper, Chris Weller's not a lot of guys that I would trust in that bullpen
to work multiple innings outside of Bizarro.
And I kind of want them to save his arm this year.
I don't want to see as many multi-innings once this season.
All right.
Hey, Anders, I'll go ahead and do the first and third ad read for you too, if you don't mind me.
That's something we could have talked about before, but we didn't.
We'll go ahead and take a quick break.
And then I got to ask Anders about the offense, which scored zero runs.
and I've heard that's not great.
We'll be right back on the Lock Dodd Mariners Postcast.

Welcome back to the Mariners Postcast.
My name is Chris Crawford.
I'm with Anderson Hurst.
Just happy to be here with internet and able to finally see.
By the way, the biggest worry for Chris Crawford was that he has an electric chair.
I'm talking about myself in the third person because of course I am.
The chair was up and the power went out.
So I had to find a way to figure out how to get out of said chair.
Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. You say electric chair. Like it's a death penalty thing.
Yeah, so, well, it was, yeah, okay, so it's a chair that has one of those electric up and down legs.
Okay, that makes a lot more sense.
And it was up. And while I've lost considerable amounts of weight, I'm still not exactly Simone Biles out here,
trying to get out of that chair and scoot, you know, because that thing would not go down.
I don't have like something where you could bring it down.
I thought I was going to be stuck in that thing for a very long time.
And speaking of stuck, Seattle Mariners offense.
And, you know, I didn't even watch the dang thing.
And I'm going to give a ton of credit to Max Fried, one of the best left-handed pitchers.
It looks really good.
But only four hits, strikeout seven times.
you do not score a run.
It looks like they had one chance with the runners in scoring position the entire game.
Anders, that's not great.
Yeah.
Do you have the box score in front of you?
I do.
Dang it, I was going to ask you how many guys you think got on base multiple times today.
Well, I'm at the pitchers thing right here.
So I'm not looking at that.
So I could make a guess.
Three.
One player.
One player got on base multiple times tonight.
was Julio Rodriguez with a walk and they hit everyone else either got on base zero or one.
So yeah, that'll help you not, you know, for those who were worried about runners but scoring,
the stats with RASP for the early going in the season, the best way to help that is to not get
runners in scoring position, right? Right?
Yeah, yeah, it's usually a pretty good thing.
Like, usually, like, having someone on base to actually drive in is technically the best way to go about it.
Sure.
Okay.
Yeah, that's, that's ugly.
I want to ask you about Rob Reff Snyder because I know it's very early.
It's very, very early.
But I think we all have a little bit of PTSD from previous Mariner acquisitions of the Ref Schneider ilk.
And this has been pretty ugly.
Is he a bit of all right?
is what you're asking me.
Yeah.
Like, how worried are you?
He's hit the ball a couple times, but I know, like we said before, this is a results-based
game, so it's hard to really get, like, and hitting left, he's supposed to be your thing.
So he's, you're not going to do that.
What are you here for, you know?
He's not even, he's dehing at this point.
He's not even playing defense.
So worried, not super worried, because, I mean, he's a platoon bat on the,
against lefties.
So, I mean, if even if he sucks, it's not the end of the world.
You can figure out ways to kind of plug guys into that spot.
But it's not been as good as I thought it would be from him.
And they definitely have to move him down the order.
You need, I think at this point you need to bleed off Brandon Donovan against both sides.
And we, you and I've talked about that.
He's not great against left-handed pitching.
But as of now, he's proven that he can get more on-based.
Yeah, exactly.
And like I was kind of excited for this
Rush Snyder edition.
So I'm a little disappointed in, you know, his early season results,
but I could definitely see that turning around.
But it also is like right-handed hitters have had a history
and not doing a lot when their first season in Seattle.
So it's definitely easy to see that also going the other way.
So I'm not worried just because of the position that he is,
but it's not something where I would call it a positive at this point this season.
Yeah, I mean, I think probably without having watched it again,
probably a case of just trying to do a little too much, a little too much.
And I have seen him work some counts, like I've seen him in some three ball counts,
and that's been encouraging to see.
I just, I bring it up because I think we've got to be a little patient, you know.
Yes, 100%.
You know, especially everybody.
Hey, Josh Nailor gets his first hit tonight.
Josh Nailer, congrats, Joshy.
I'm glad you're able to get that first hit.
saw that Julio has two exit velocities above 100, which was nice to see there.
And he also draws a walk.
So that's cool.
Cole Young, as my buddy Jack brings up, did have a hit against the lefty.
And we didn't talk nearly enough about how good Cole Young was yesterday.
That's my bad.
I should have just, like, forced you into talking about it.
There was a lot to talk about.
There was so much to talk about, but he was fantastic yesterday.
I do know who Cole Young is.
But it's interesting.
Everybody who struggles, we're going to be keeping an eye on,
because there's a $96 million man now in AAA for the Seattle Mariners.
Yeah, I'm curious.
Okay.
We have a couple of minutes left.
Yeah.
Dudd of the Mariners game.
They lost.
Yeah.
Offense wasn't good.
Logan Gilbert wasn't good.
We can kind of get into that a little bit later.
I want to wait before I really freak out on Logan.
I want to see it a couple more times.
Just to me, it just looks more like 2025 than the previous year, which, you know, isn't
awful, but it's also not exactly what I want to see from him.
So, Colt Emerson.
As a prospect guy.
I know Ty and Cole, we talked about it earlier today, but I want to get your thoughts.
Both with him signing and, you know, how good you expect him to be.
And, you know, with Jerry Depoto saying now that we can kind of zoom in a little bit,
that he's going to be third base, almost assuredly, JP Crawford is your shortstop.
So first of all, don't be surprised if Brendan Donovan is your everyday right fielder pretty soon.
That's my first takeaway here because at first I was thinking left field,
but I just don't think they would trade Randy.
I don't think Randy's going to be back next year,
but I don't think they would trade him.
He just makes too much sense to help you get into the position that you want to go.
Or we could just see Donovan bounce around a little bit.
We could see Colt Emerson, you know,
get some starts at second base and shortstop.
You could see some of that stuff and you could make him literally the next
Zobrist.
Everybody's looking for the next Zobrists.
burst. Maybe that's what Brendan Donovan is for the Mariners. But this is great. And it's a win,
win, win. Colt Emerson, congratulations on not making poverty money while you're with Tacoma.
And I know he signed a huge contract. So he wasn't a huge signing bonus, excuse me, so he wasn't
struggling. But, you know, this is a big time payday for him. It's great for Mariner fans because,
you know, you've locked up a what could be a huge part of your core. And it's great for the
Mariners too because yeah you're paying Colt Emerson a lot more than the veteran minimum for the next
two years I almost positive he'll be a super two guy so the next four years of arbitration you might be
saving yourself a boat ton of money and I'm not in the interest of being woohoo john stands save money
woohoo that's so exciting but you have to acknowledge the mariners operate with a budget
and knowing that you have your starting shortstop locked up for 12 million dollars
in today's economy is pretty dang good.
And you also buy out two years of free agency there.
So a step back, supposedly, for the financial ramification,
but a huge step forward.
And Colt Emerson's going to be just fine.
He's not going to be in line at, I can't even think of a place.
Like Long John Silver's, they probably don't sponsor the show.
I don't think that he's going to be struggling for anything.
But, yeah, I mean, this is a great move.
When you look at the contracts that have given out, that have been given out this early in careers, more often than not they pan out.
You can tell when GMs and people who run baseball teams know when a guy is going to be really good.
You look at Julio Rodriguez, Ronald Acuna, Fernando Tatis, like all the big guys that signed contracts really, really early.
They end up having pretty nice careers.
And you can look at that a Kunya contract now and look how much of a steel.
Oh my gosh.
So, I mean, but there's a tradeoff, right?
Colt Emerson, who's never hit in the major leagues, can have security now for his entire, basically his entire career.
So I think it's good for both sides.
I think it's good for the Mariners who have said multiple times that they're not going to pay guys into their 30s.
Yeah.
So you pay them in their 20s then.
So this is what they do with Julio, with Colts, and, you know, you kind of piece it together from there.
So I like the move.
I agree with you.
But there is some like, oh, what if he's Evan White?
He's not going to be Evan White guys.
No.
And even if he is, guys, the Mariners are going to be fine.
They're going to be fine.
Like even if Colt Emerson is just a utility up and down guy, they're going to be fine.
This should not affect their everyday budget.
My unsung hero real quick is the Mason County people who put together just in getting my internet back in time, Anderson, you're on sung hero.
or bill for unsung.
Oh, God.
I was thinking about some way to be clever,
but I'll just go with a regular unsung today.
I'll go unsung hero,
and we kind of talked about him already,
but Mr. Wolcox.
Nice.
You know, you like his stuff.
That's enough for me to kind of be intrigued by him.
A couple good innings, like you said,
having, you know,
being able to go multiple.
multiple innings, especially in a situation where you're down by five runs.
You're not expecting him to, you know, be in a high leverage spot or anything like that.
Save the bullpen a little bit.
Take a couple off of Logan and be good to go.
So, yeah, two hits, but, you know, kind of bloopy, although he does get one hit kind of lucky,
or sorry, one hit taken away because of Aaron Judge and the line drive off of him and everything.
But three Ks, two innings pitch, absolutely will take that.
You have a chance to go and win the series tomorrow.
I think that would be a big time, you know, thing to do, especially after a split against Cleveland
where most people would be like, all right, first series of the season, you know, some good to take from it.
If you go in, then, you know, beat the Yankees two out of three in the next series after that,
most people will be like, all right, that's the team that I expected to see.
So it's a big one tomorrow.
Absolutely.
Interesting pitching matchup to Kim, Schlitter, which is going to get me in trouble at some point.
Schlittler.
Schlitler.
Slittler. Slitters full is what they say in National Lampoons, Vegas vacation.
Or no, Christmas vacation. Vegas vacation is terrible.
Yeah, we'll be live for that one as well tomorrow.
One o'clock game, so I get plenty of sleep.
Thanks, Anders, for letting me do the host duties.
It was a lot of fun, even if I didn't watch a freaking inning.
We'll be back again after every game, and I promise this time I'm not going to hit anything on the south.
Okay, I was going to say, does that mean I get to do this?
we did switch roll right
