Starting point is 00:00:04 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Yikes. Yikes, yikes, yikes, yikes. Your Seattle Mariners lose one to zero against the Chicago White Sox. In what would have been one of the ugliest games I've seen in a long time in almost every single way. The fact that the weather was ugly.
Starting point is 00:00:40 The fact that that stadium has about 10 people in it. The fact that the Mariners' offense looked about as ugly as it has all year against a terrible, terrible baseball team. That's a tough one to end the brief winning streak. The Mariners were on. Chris Crawford, Anderson Hurst here to break it all down for you on the Mariners' postcast. You're on the Lockdown Sports Network. We're going to go over that eighth inning.
Starting point is 00:01:05 We're just going to go over the offensive struggles. as a whole against Adrian Houser and the inability to get the job done against the bullpen. And we'll do a couple more things along the way as well. But my first reaction, we'll get Chris back in here. Don't worry, just a second. My first reaction is that this is just a tough way and a quick, quick winning streak for the Seattle Mariners. The vibes weren't great from the beginning. There he is.
Starting point is 00:01:32 He's back. The vibes weren't great from the beginning. The weather delay. It just, it was ugliness all around. Chris Crawford, what was your first take on a tough game? So the reason why I was out, as I realized I forgot to plug in my microphone, and I want to make dang sure everyone hears me. Because here's the fun thing about doing a postcast show
Starting point is 00:01:54 instead of a daily operation, look at the long-term thing. All we can do is react to tonight. And tonight, this was a pathetic effort from the Seattle Mariners. pathetic. I don't want to hear anything about wind. I don't want to hear anything about winning four straight. I don't want to hear anything about the polar vortexes somehow being aligned. I don't want to hear anything about a Trident being the wrong shape. They sucked tonight. They were a bad baseball team against a baseball team that is literally not rying. You scored one run. And here I'll take a little bit of a long-term picture just real quick. Sands one swing for
Starting point is 00:02:35 from Julio Rodriguez. You scored one run over 18 innings against the Chicago freaking white socks. This was a pathetic offensive effort. It was bad at bats against bad pitchers. And I am ticked off. And I'm very happy to be talking to you. Thank you for separating those two things because it can get rough for sure. It sucks that we had to sit through all of that.
Starting point is 00:03:02 And then they had a chance to get something done in the eighth inning. let's go straight to it i think that's our big moment in the game uh we get the bases loaded with uh boat with one out um and you can even put a couple of the at bats to lead up to that point um but let's just start with the garver at bat with the bases loaded and one out what what happened just a really poor at bat man you have to swing the bat even if you are just fouling that baseball off because that wasn't some terrific pitch from boozer it was a cookie cutter slider down the middle of the plate. Just foul it off and live another day. Hopefully he throws another ball out of the strike zone because Mitch Garver did not look interested in swinging the bat in those at bats.
Starting point is 00:03:44 He swung at a slider well outside of the strike zone earlier in the ad bat. It was a really poor at bat. And look, Julio Rodriguez had a poor at bat as well. He got some fastballs down the middle of the plate and he wasn't able to do anything with him. I'll give him credit for fouling off a couple of decent pitches. But you got to get the job done there. You've got to get the job done there. and then from that point on, three absolutely atrocious at bats to end the game with a double from Donovan Solano because of course, because of course the one good in this game I will remember is Donovan Solano. But that at bat for Mitch Garver is one I will remember for a while because I am a person who seems to remember all the crappy things that are happening. And that was a terrible at bat, atrocious a bat in his biggest situation.
Starting point is 00:04:34 as they've had. So not, you know what I mean. But it was the game. It was the game. And unfortunately, he didn't even come close to getting it done. Well, let's let's talk a little bit about what goes into a big rain delay like this. Kind of the vibes weren't great going into today anyway. You're already planning on doing an opener bulk guy with Casey Legamina going into Casey Lawrence. I mean, they were fine. This is a terrible White Sox lineup. I'm not going to say it's their fault or anything. I mean, Casey Legamino wasn't great. And that's how they got their one run, I believe. No, he got out of it.
Starting point is 00:05:09 And Casey Lawrence, I think it was in the third inning where they got their run. But that's not the reason why he lost this game. It's the offense. But how much can be attributed, I'm not going to say justify, but I'm going to say how much can be attributed to the fact that, you know, you prepare for a certain time to go on the baseball team. We know that these players have their routines. They like to do things at a certain time before they start.
Starting point is 00:05:32 start, you could just tell these guys were in a weird funk in this game anyway. Yeah. Yeah, and I'm not, I'm not justifying or giving any excuses. I'm just, how much can we attribute to that being an issue here? It's impossible to really know, but it didn't look like they were very interested in playing this baseball game. Like, there was just no fire from these dudes whatsoever. And look, I get it. You're playing against a crapshactor, crap shaktory, crapshack of a baseball team. I think I combined shack and factory their shackery. Yeah, they clearly weren't motivated, but that's no excuse for getting one run of Adrian Frickenhouser.
Starting point is 00:06:14 No runs, excuse me, of Adrian Frickinhouser and that Chicago bullpen. I don't even think the White Sox knew who their closer was going to be. They had three saves coming into tonight. Three. I've saved myself probably three times over the last month. How in the hell does a professional baseball team have three saves and to score no runs off of any of those guys is just awful? But, you know, there's definitely uncomfortableness. I was surprised this game actually even got played, to be honest.
Starting point is 00:06:48 Yeah. I think the Mariners War II, it shows. Yeah. And, you know, but it's not a good excuse. But, you know, it's a daily game. We all have bad days. And in the long term, this loss is far from a, you know, a damning loss. Like they can get over this real quick when tomorrow and nobody will probably
Starting point is 00:07:07 even remember that loss other than sickos like me. But all we can do is react to tonight. And tonight was awful. It was a pathetic offensive effort. You know, Casey Lawrence was fine. Do I think he pitched well enough for five innings of shutout baseball? No. Was he taking advantage of that wind blowing in? You bet your sweet Bippy. Like there were so many balls. I said, well, that's gone. And then I looked and it barely gets to the warning track. Yeah. It just was a, just, I can't get over how bad this offense was tonight.
Starting point is 00:07:39 Yeah, and I think we got a comment from earlier. Let me see if I can go back and find it because it was a big one. And I'm not going to take credit for it. But these are just those games that you look back on. Here it is by Aaron. If we missed the playoffs by one game again, this is the game you look at. This is that Kansas City Royals game from. last year that you totally choked away.
Starting point is 00:08:04 These are the types of games where you're going to, I understand if you go out and win tomorrow that no one's going to remember this, like he said. Right. All right. You won your series. What, that's seven of nine. I think that would make it. So I just don't, I don't think this in the long run is a huge deal.
Starting point is 00:08:22 They need to make sure that they do win tomorrow, though, because if you do lose tomorrow, can't lose serious to the team. Yeah. that would be that would be a pretty damn that we talked about how big the sweep was yeah uh against san diego that would i would think negate it if if anything else you're you just keep riding these up and downs up and downs of the season you got to go in a little bit of a streak because the a astros and uh the the rangers are coming guys and especially you're going to play for in houston over the weekend you've got to go in there after winning a series against the chicago freaking
Starting point is 00:08:55 White Sox. If you play like you did these last two games against the Houston Astros, it's not going to go well. It's not going to go well, man. Like as good as Luis Castillo was, as successful as Casey Lawrence was. And by the way, congrats on him being DFA tomorrow. You know what's going to happen. I just, it's just the way it goes. Sorry, buddy. You'll go sign with Toronto and then he'll come back to Seattle and they'll go to Toronto. I guess there's worst two cities that you can split time between. But you can't play like this against the Houston Astros. Tonight was awful.
Starting point is 00:09:31 There were so many at bats and somebody brought it up to like in that ninth inning, Randy Rose Arena swung at a slider that was never a strike. And guess what happens after Randy a Rosa Arena, who normally is very good in these situations. If he's draws that walk, then he's scoring easily on that Donovan Salino double. It's a tie game. but he had a horrific at bat. It looked like he had no interest in swinging the bat whatsoever. And then he finally did, swung at a slider that was 30 grade,
Starting point is 00:10:02 that would have hit a left-handed batter. It just wasn't their night. But these type of nights just can't happen too often. They just can't happen too often. I'm not saying that they can't ever happen. It'd be really boring if they never happened, right? Like 162 and O would get, I've done it on MLB, the show. it actually gets pretty boring after a while.
Starting point is 00:10:22 You start to think about simulating parts of the season, right? Yeah. But that doesn't mean that you can't be incredibly frustrated. And also, based on the Seattle Mariners history, you have every right to have a little bit of a, uh-oh. Yeah. Anytime you see these types of games, it was pathetic. It was a pathetic offensive effort tonight.
Starting point is 00:10:43 Yeah, and you mentioned Randy Rosa Rana. We've been singing as praise in the last few series, the last couple post game shows that we've done. there was even a moment. I think it was Palacios. They hit a ball that should have been cut off pretty easily and hit for a single. The dude's running out of the box instantly. Randy just kind of lazily gets there and, like, throws a rainbow ball back in.
Starting point is 00:11:06 And it's just an easy stand-up double, which should not have been on any sort of night whatsoever. It just seemed like there was no interest in this baseball team. And like, yeah, the loss itself, fine. It doesn't matter. Like, you can go in tomorrow and move on. But I turn to coaching in this instance because this is something where if you're a manager of a team that has control of a locker room, you don't let your guys play like this against a terrible baseball team. I don't care about the weather delay.
Starting point is 00:11:35 I don't care that you're playing this terrible, terrible team. You don't let your team play like this ever. They always put in the effort and that wasn't happening tonight. No, and that's the biggest concern for me. And look, I've heard nothing but good things about the vibes with Dan Wilson. I would hope that Dan Wilson is spewing a little bit of hellfire down tonight. Oh, no, so. This is just, it would be one thing if, like, you know, you were talking about Adrian
Starting point is 00:12:01 Hauser just having electric stuff and you were talking about facing one of the better bullpents. No, you got beat tonight by Adrian Howser, Brandon Isert, Carlos Boozer. I'm not calling you by your real name, and leisure suit Larry tonight. That's who you lost to tonight. Like that's not acceptable. It is not acceptable. Again, I'm not saying you have to win 162. No.
Starting point is 00:12:24 But you got to beat the White Sox. You got to beat the White Sox. It doesn't matter about a rain delay. It doesn't matter about any of this stuff. You have to beat the Chicago White Sox. Yeah. And again, like even if you don't sweep this series, you got one tomorrow. It's how this looked.
Starting point is 00:12:41 And like you can't have, you can't have everything set up perfectly for you. Right. And then when a little bit of adversity comes your way, whether that's a weather delay, whether that's injuries. Now, they've done okay with, you know, managing the injuries so far, especially in the pitching staff. But you can't just fold over and look like they did tonight, which is like the fact that there was just zero interest in playing this baseball game. Yeah. Makes me incredibly pissed off because I actually came in the night thinking, you know, whatever, you win tomorrow. Sure.
Starting point is 00:13:13 the more I talk about it, the more I get pissed off. Yeah, yeah. You know what? That's the thing that you're going to learn doing this thing. Like, I have three years of these demons that I have been getting in and getting out. You'll find it cathartic most of the time. There are going to be nights like tonight where you wish you had any other job than this one. Yeah, and it's like all signs just go to me pointing that the Mariners didn't expect to play
Starting point is 00:13:43 this game and they didn't want to. And that's something as a fan that you just can't, it's unacceptable. That's all I'm going to say. It's unacceptable. Okay, before we get into our unsung hero, boy, we have really dig deep for this one. Comment in yours. If you have one, maybe just a quick positive from the game tonight. I want to mention one thing as well. Once again, Jorge Polanco doesn't get to bat against a left-handed batter. Sure. This is becoming an issue. I understand that you're trying to manage his injury, and maybe he is much more comfortable batting from the left-hand side against the righty.
Starting point is 00:14:26 But at this point, with the options you have, he cannot be out of the game that easily. The other team can just bring in any sort of left-handed pitcher. And, oh, Poré Blanca's out of the game now. Like, that is a big, big issue for this team. So, and look, Mitch Garver's done an okay job this year. He's getting on to the 352 clip. I don't want to go too crazy here.
Starting point is 00:14:51 But Mitch Garver has become a dink and dunk hitter. And dink and dunk hitters who have 20 grade speed don't have a ton of value. It's nice that he's not getting out as often, but he's not the same thing. And it's becoming too easy to manage against this team now because you're bringing in that lefty knowing that, oh, okay. if Mitch Garber happens to get on and hits a single, I can deal with that. It's certainly better than Jorge Polanco hitting from the left side and having a chance to hit for, you know, the ball a long, long way.
Starting point is 00:15:23 And where is Garber's power? I don't know because it's like he's not coming even like close. He hit a ball fairly hard last night, you know, that I kind of thought might have a chance to get to the fence. But there's so little, this is a guy who's hit 30 home runs before. This is a guy who's had legitimate. power and I wonder how much of it has to do with potential injury or just lack of bat speed. I haven't really looked at that metric in a little while, but this is a huge problem.
Starting point is 00:15:49 And somebody brought up, I think it was my buddy Nelson that maybe you've got to talk about moving Polanco down in the lineup a little bit. Because you have guys who can hit second on this team, right? Like you experimented it with the Cal Raleigh. I don't really love that. I really wouldn't mind having a situation where you had Julio struggled there so much. like a rosarina in that second spot or some of these other like experiment because this is a huge problem and it's been an issue it worked out okay last night to be fair you know they
Starting point is 00:16:22 pinch it for him and gervor got the base hit so we can't be too hyperbolic with this stuff but it is an issue and yet it is something that you really have to consider because he just flat out can't swing against lefties it's clear otherwise he would be doing it they don't have that much Bates and Mitch Garber. So is there any chance for, I know we're going a little longer, but is there any chance that he can just bat left-handed against left-handed pitching? That has to be a better option than what Mitch Garber is throwing out there. Yeah. Wait, say that one more time. I'm sorry. Is there any chance that Polanco can just bat left-handed against left-handed pitch? No, because he did it, tried it once and it was super
Starting point is 00:17:01 uncomfortable. And there's a fear there. Like, and I understand it. If you've been swinging left-handed against right handers your whole life and you just haven't seen lefty versus lefties, it's a super uncomfortable experience. That ball looks like it's coming right at your head. It takes loads and loads of work. And he has no chance of getting a hit, like zero chance. So it's frustrated as I get with Mitch Garver. I still want Garver batting in those situations.
Starting point is 00:17:29 And lefty, lefty, Polanco. But ideally, you don't have to make this switch. And so I sure hope Polanco can get healthy soon. but yeah, that left on left wanted bat was enough for me to say, okay, can't do that. All right, well, good to know. Thank you for correcting me on that one. Comment in what you guys think the Mariners should do. Should they move Polanco down in the lineup?
Starting point is 00:17:52 Should, who is your unsung hero today? What was the big moment in the game? Obviously, we're pointing to the eighth inning. But before we do that, let's talk a little bit about Monarch money. If you ever check your bank account and wonder, where did all my money go between dining out, online shopping and entertainment, it's easy to lose track. And that's where Monarch Money comes in. Your personal CFO, giving you full visibility and control over your finances. Monarch Money isn't just a budgeting app. It's a complete financial command center.
Starting point is 00:18:26 You can track all your accounts, investments, and spending in one place. So you stop just managing your money and start building wealth. My favorite part about it is the easy collaboration. Like, if I was to ever have people who loved me, it would be nice to know that I could take a look at different people's financial stuff. You know, the fact that you can just do this all through one app is why Monarch Money is something that you have to have. Yeah. Just make sure you take control of your finances with Monarch Money.
Starting point is 00:18:51 Use Locked on MLB at Monarchmoney.com for 50% off your first year. That's Monarchmoney.com code locked on MLB for half off your entire first year. That's a pretty significant amount of time. Okay. last couple things here before we move on to tomorrow's show reminder it's 1110 tomorrow i think it's jonathan diaz it that but i remember seeing um tomorrow for the starting pitcher but let's let's get our last cathartic uh feelings out of this one because this was a tough one to watch for mariners fans uh if you stuck through it well done uh because you you waited and saw the rain delay hit right at 440
Starting point is 00:19:40 then by the time, you know, 615 came along, you're like, all right, do I got to sit through this? Are we going to actually go the full nine innings here? They actually did. So credit to them for that, I guess. But let's get to what everyone's been waiting for. And that is the unsung hero segment. Chris Crawford, who is yours? Luis Castillo for yesterday, pitching seven shutout innings in making it so that Seattle Mariners won this series.
Starting point is 00:20:04 There's nobody who deserves to be unsung tonight. All right. I'm going to say the retractable roof because the fact that other teams, teams, especially in the Midwest, don't have roofs, is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. I just, I don't understand it. It makes zero sense to me. I don't know why they just can't figure it out. You know, and look, it's a lot of money.
Starting point is 00:20:26 I get that. But it's also something that should just be necessary now. Like if you play in Cleveland, Minnesota, Detroit, any of these Midwest towns, you should be required to have a retractable roof. It is absolutely insane that we are still building stadiums without them. Like, what are we doing, folks? Like, have you not seen what weather is now? Like, there are such extreme rain stuff. And also, I'm sorry, if you play in one of those stadiums, you've got to play most of your games on the road in April. You've got to play most of your games on the road in April. And I'm so glad we live in, you know, it's funny, we live in Seattle, which is
Starting point is 00:21:08 town that gets plenty of rain. But I'm so glad we live in such a beautiful place that also has a beautiful, retractable roof. Yep, yep. And it makes going experiences to games like this, a much better experience, too. So you never have to worry about that. No God 206. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:21:24 Shane Smith against Logan Evans. You did your research. I did not because I was so upset. Shane Smith is really, really good. He says, yeah, he is, he's, he's, he's pitching really well. Adrian Houser is one of those like, okay, what are we doing here? but Shane Smith can easily dominate a lineup. He's done it multiple times this year.
Starting point is 00:21:41 So that's something to look forward to tomorrow. One more from the No God, 206. God, where would we be without Luis Castillo? Seriously, there were fans who said he's our worst starter and we need to salary dump him. Yeah, I remember when everyone wanted to trade Luis Castillo for a bat. Thank God we didn't do that now. Oh, yeah. Thank God.
Starting point is 00:22:00 Where would we be if we didn't have that guy, especially with both George Kirby and Bryce Miller and Logan Gilbert, all going down? I don't know where we would be at this point. It would be really, really bad. And look, I wouldn't have had a huge problem trading him for like an elite bat. And if you get like a depth pitching piece back, I love Luis Castillo. Don't get me wrong. But like I would have gotten the process of trading him for a really, really good offensive player. They turned down Yoshita and Tristan Kossis for Luis Castillo.
Starting point is 00:22:30 So far, that looks like a very, very good decision. Good decision. But, you know, thank goodness for Luis Castillo and that stuff. start last night because tonight was just 10 pounds of crap and a five pound bag. Yep, yep. So let's hope they can cast this out of our mind tomorrow with a big win. Logan Evans, do what you need to do against a bad White Sox lineup. Offense, just show up.
Starting point is 00:22:52 Yeah. Please show up. Because like you said, without that one Julio Rodriguez swing, we've scored one run in 18 innings, a single run against one of the worst teams in baseball. obviously you're going to go through those stretches throughout a season so nothing to ring the alarm bells but this this kind of stuff you just need to instantly get rid of out of your mind out of the history by doing it much better the next day so let's hope the mariners end up doing that all right guys remember you can catch any of our post game show anywhere you get your podcast just looked for the mariners postcast on those
Starting point is 00:23:28 and you can watch us once again on youtube if you missed any part of it just rewind it all the way back to the beginning. That's one of the great parts about going live is you don't have to, you don't have to be live right with us. You can start with us from the beginning. And we'll see you guys tomorrow. 1110 start time. So maybe looking about 2, 2.30, when Chris and I will be with. Yeah, one more thing. The only thing I was going to add is, hey, did you want to hear us talk about Luis Castillo started yesterday? Do you want us to talk about Julios? You can go to the live section on the Locked on Mariners and view any of our previous podcast. We sure would appreciate doing that.
Starting point is 00:24:01 And just real quick, we super appreciate all the views that we've gotten. We have hit this thing absolutely running. Anders and I were scared that there were going to be negative 10 people watching us and we were going to be one of those sad Twitch things where somebody has to leave a donation to make us feel better. I know we've been a ton of you checking this out. And we super appreciate it. We know we're not as good as Ty Colby.
Starting point is 00:24:22 We will get there one day. I think Andrew might actually be better than Colby right now. I'll never be as good as Ty, however. But we super appreciate all the support. Yeah. And once again, anyone is wondering what's going on here where it's high and Kobe. We've answered these questions already, but I'll just address it one more time. They still have their show.
Starting point is 00:24:38 Don't worry. They do this. Still do the daily lockdown Mariner's podcast. They do it from kind of a 30,000 foot view. They're going to break down. Of course, break down the game a little bit from the previous day as well. If I look ahead as a bigger picture sort of thing, Chris and I are just the instant reaction show, your Mariners postcast.
Starting point is 00:24:53 So right after the game, we go live, right on YouTube. And you can catch any of those as a post game show. So really, really appreciate you guys tuning in. I totally agree with Chris on that one. So having all you guys come and hang out with us is awesome. And it helps nights like this helps me get through it a little bit. Because I look forward to talking with you guys, talking to you, Chris. And you guys are awesome.
Starting point is 00:25:13 I love the Mariners fandom. And we'll catch you guys tomorrow, okay? 11.10 a.m. start. We'll chat soon. Pacific time, I should say. Anyone who's looking or watching a different part of the country, different time zones? Never know. 11.10 a.m. Pacific time start.
Starting point is 00:25:27 Logan Evans, let's get the job done. No one series. Let's forget this game. Let's forget this game. One freaking run. Good stuff, man. Good stuff, sir.
