This is the Mariners Postcast.
Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners.
Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Let's start from the beginning here because it's just so easy to get Mariners hitters out at this point.
And it's easy to dance circles around Dan Wilson as a manager right now because of what he's doing with his platoon situations.
All you have to do is put a lefty into the game.
It's crazy how easy the script is for every single Major League Baseball team
to come in and get a win against the Seattle Mariners, right?
It could be, you know, you could be throwing a righty starter or you could have a lefty starter.
Bonus points if you have a lefty starter because you're going to see Rob Ref Schneider
and Connor Joe for almost the entire game.
But even if you do have a righty starter, you can put whatever you're at,
at when the starter leaves the game, you can just kind of figure out where the Dom-Can zone and
Luke Reilly part of the lineup is and then put a left-handed reliever in that situation.
It's crazy how simple the formula is to get Mariners and Dan Wilson to be taking two of their
better hitters in the lineup out of the game.
I don't know how many times we can have the same conversation over and over and over again.
But if it's obvious to me, it's obvious to everyone.
And it obviously is obvious to everyone because every team that the Mariners play against
have the exact same formula.
All right.
I get that you needed to get more versus Vasquez tonight.
I understand that offensively.
But it should not be that easy.
You had probably the biggest chance to score runs tonight.
And the biggest at back goes to Connor,
flipping Joe,
because you had to bat him in the beginning of an inning
with nobody on in the seventh,
just because they put in their left-handed reliever.
And they showed the splits, you know,
for Adrian Morahone,
left-handed batters versus right-handed batters.
If right-handed batters had a much more likelihood of getting on base, whatever.
I don't know.
at some point you have to go with the better hitter and especially knowing that later in the
game they're going to get another at bat right so being able to just so easily place and set up
your entire team and entire game script because you can get Dan Wilson to take his left-handed
batters out of the game in the seventh or sixth inning even sometimes is crazy and look I can
sort of understand it. If there was two guys on base, you have more a hon, and it's Luke Rayleigh or
Dom-Cand zone, and this is your chance to get two runs. It was the beginning of the inning.
It was the beginning of the inning. It's not a high-leverage situation whatsoever.
Try and work a walk, Luke Rayleigh, right? Try and maybe drop down a bunt. And I'm not a bunting fan,
But being, having half of your at-bats from that position in the lineup go to Connor Joe is just, it's malpractice.
It's not what platoons were intended to be for.
And they're not being used correctly.
Now, guys, I mentioned this while I was on silent.
I do apologize for the mic malfunction earlier in the show.
But I'm operating under the assumption that this is a Dan Wilson decision, that this is not a Jerry Depoto decision.
We don't know this for sure or Justin Holland or whoever, the scout team.
I'm operating under the assumption this is a Dan Wilson decision.
I don't know that for sure.
But everything that I've been told, I've been around the clubhouse a decent amount of times,
I think this is a Dan Wilson decision.
And I can also draw that assumption because they weren't this strict with platoons when it was Scott's service.
And you could tell the different strategy in terms of, you know,
know, pitching decisions as well with the Scott Service tenure versus Dan Wilson tenure.
So I am operating under the assumption that this is a Dan Wilson decision.
That's what we have to do at this point.
So I'm extremely frustrated, as you can tell.
Mariners lose this one, two to zero against the San Diego Padres.
The offense is just, there's nothing doing.
Look, it's crazy to get so mad at an instance later in the game when you did nothing
the starter. And knowing the way the Padres are built, you have to get the starter in order to
to have any sort of success against this team because their bullpen is probably the best bullpen
in baseball. So that ultimately is where you lose this game, is the inability to get to Randy
Vasquez. But it's so frustrating seeing your best chance to score runs come against really good
relievers. And you see some really good at bats too against Mason Miller and against Adrian Moro.
but you have in the biggest spot in the game,
you have Connor Joe taking that at bat.
It's just extremely frustrating.
And I'm not blaming Connor Joe.
That's not a situation you should be put in.
You have him and Rob Ratz
taking half the at-bats for two spots in the lineup.
Go to guys that shouldn't be on an MLB roster at this point.
I'm late to it because I, again,
sorry about the mic malfunction guys.
I thought I had everything covered, but I did not.
I guess they just didn't want me to swear because there was a lot of it right before I went live.
Emerson Hancock got everything done tonight.
He had a great line.
Look, it reminded me a lot of a Luis Castillo start from last year where, you know,
there was a lot of hard contact with him.
And, you know, he had a lot of traffic on the base paths.
But whenever he needed to make a pitch, he absolutely was able to get it done.
So six innings, five hits, one run.
It was earned.
It was a walk.
Six K's.
Yeah.
Emerson Hancock absolutely did his job tonight.
Cooper Quiswell does get the run against him.
I would like to see better from him in a clean inning.
But it's okay.
Jose Ferreira, welcome back.
It's going to be a huge addition to the bullpen if he's able to kind of get things going here.
Having that be part of the lefty group.
And just the overall,
high leverage bullpen arms is going to be a really positive thing for the Mariners moving forward.
But the ultimate frustration comes on those last couple innings, guys.
I mean, I don't want to keep having the same conversation,
but it's so obvious what it takes and every team is doing it at this point.
It's not like it's the only these super experienced managers that are doing this
and realizing that it's this easy to get the better hitters.
out of the Mariners lineup early in the game.
But it's every single manager is doing it.
And you're even seeing so much so that when the lefties, lefty killers, quote unquote,
Rob Reff Snyder and Connor Joe are in the lineup and they're due to face a lefty in the next inning,
they're leaving them in the game because they don't want them to be taken out.
That tells you a lot about, you know, their effectiveness at this point at doing their job.
And look, not all the blame goes to Dan Wilson because why is Reff Snyder on this roster?
Why is Connor Jill on this roster?
And the answer is to hit left-handed pitching.
So if they can't do that, then why are they even here?
I don't know.
I personally can't answer that for you.
I would rather see Luke Rayleigh and Domkan zone batting almost every single at bat.
And if you have to punt an app bat against a left-handed pitcher, fine.
I would have rather just have an auto take for Luke Ray Lee or Dom-Can zone against Adrian Moro-Hone in that seventh inning.
I would have absolutely rather had that happen.
So you could have them for later in the game.
And guys, like I said, you score zero runs tonight, but there's a couple really good at bathroom guys to get kind of the runs or the guys on base here.
Connor Joe does work a walk against Adrian Morahone in the seventh inning.
Rob Ref Snyder strikes out, Cole Young strikes out.
But I'm thinking more in that eighth inning here
because Brendan Donovan singles, Julio walks,
Josh Naylor barely misses one,
and that would have tied the game or actually taking the lead.
It just feels like that swing, possibly later in the summer.
That would have been a home run.
Then they bring in Mason Miller for the four-out save,
and Randy Rosarana literally throws his bat
and works a single.
However it works, I love to see that happen from Randy or Rosa Rana.
And then Connor Joe is the guy.
You have the bases loaded with two outs.
And you have Connor Joe up against Mason Miller.
It's not even about handedness at this point.
It's Conjo right-hander versus Mason Miller,
the best right-handed pitcher in the game at this point.
it's the ultimate David versus Goliath matchup,
and there's just no chance he should be put in that situation at all.
So as you guys can tell, I'm a little frustrated.
I was so frustrated that I didn't even look at my mic settings.
But we'll take a quick break here.
We'll come back.
We'll get our unsung hero.
Talk a little bit about the game, you know, a couple moments in the game.
Cole Young getting doubled up was not a great thing for him.
We need to be smarter on the Bates pads.
and then continue to move forward and hopefully we can get a win against the Padres tomorrow.
But we'll all break that down next here on the Mariners Postcast on Locked on Meriters.

Welcome back, Mariners Postcast,
Anderson Hurst here with you guys. Mariners lose this one two to zero. Dan Wilson's getting
danced around every single time that, you know, a late inning situation comes and the Mariners
are down. Just put in a lefty. It's that simple. All you have to do is put in a lefty.
It doesn't even have to be a good lefty. I know Moral Hone's a really good left-hand pitcher.
I know he's probably one of the best left-hand pitchers in the game, but at this point,
it's super easy to put to get Luke Rayley and Dom Kanzone out of the lineup. And
less so with Dom Kanzone because he's cooled off a little bit,
but with Luke Rayleigh, man, he's been one of your hottest hitters.
It's not even just a, hey, he's a better option than Rob Reff Snyder or Connor Joe at this point.
No, it's, this dude is one of our best hitters, period, right now.
And you're still taking him out of the game.
And look, I don't have a ton of faith that Luke Rayleigh is going to get the job done in the seventh inning.
It's not about that seventh inning for me.
It's about the ninth inning or the eighth inning, excuse me, because the seventh
the first inning wasn't your best chance to score runs. And that's when you need to make the
decision, you know, whoever's best for the handedness and the matchups and all that stuff.
You brought in Connor Joe, I've said this before. You brought in Connor Joe with nobody out in
the seventh inning. There's no one on base. You're down by two. Even if he hits a home run and does
exactly what he's supposed to do, you're still down by one. That's not a high leverage situation.
It's a terrible time to go to your bench and take out one of your best hitters and also guaranteeing
another at-bat of Connor Joe against Mason Miller. It's just, I don't know, man. I would have left
Luke Rayleigh in for that first at bat. Burn Morahone, because he's, I believe he's their only
left-handed pitcher in their bullpen. But even so, they're not going to use a lefty over
Mason Miller. Maybe they would. That would be the ultimate troll if they did that. But you've got to
save Luke Rayley and get him as many at-bats as possible. Because right now, even against,
against a righty starter.
You're still, because of how early opposing managers are going to their left-handed pitcher,
you're still having half of the at-bats in the game go to Rob Reff Snyder and Conner-Joe
instead of Luke Rayleigh and Dom Canzon.
Just think about that for a sec.
I think on average, Mariners are getting four at-bats a game.
One spot in the lineup is getting four-up bats in a game, especially that.
low in the lineup. Sometimes, you know, the upper parts of the lineup get five, five plus.
But when you're the six, seven, eight hitters, five, six, seven, eight hitters sometimes,
you're getting probably four at bats, especially in a quick game like this where there's not a lot of
hits. Two of those at bats, two of the four are going to Robbrenner and Connor Joe. And they're
the two most important ones. And somehow you've made the decision that the two most important at
bats should be going to the guys that aren't doing anything offensively than the guys that are.
So, look, I don't know if this is Dan Wilson thing or if this is a Jerry Depoto thing or if this
is just a Mariners thing in general. It needs to stop. It absolutely needs to stop. And Rob Ratch
Snyder, once again, goes off for two at the strikeout. Just not good enough. Not good enough.
He shouldn't even be on the roster. Probably not Connor Joe either. I know you need guys to hit
left-hand of pitching, right? I know you need that, but I don't even want to give Dan Wilson
a decision anymore. I want to have those guys off the roster and not even make it a question,
who you're bringing on in that moment. Again, I don't even think Luke Rayleigh and Dom Kanzone
are going to be that effective against left-hand of pitching, but it's for the at-bat later in the game.
Let them burn their lefty in the seventh so that you can have a chance in the eighth or ninth
to get the job done. It's, it's, it's,
Chess, not checkers.
Our guy, Colby Pat note on Twitter,
always his comment regarding this is just like,
it's checkers.
And every other manager that's going against the Mariners is playing chess.
And it's really, that's what it is,
because it's that easy to get the Mariners' best hitters out of the lineup.
My unsung hero today is Jose Ferre.
I don't know about you guys.
I love watching him pitch, especially having him go right after Adrian Moro.
Heone, is one of the best left-handed relievers in the game,
watching Jose Ferreare,
slice and dice get a strike out in a zone and a clean i believe it was an eighth inning
seventh inning excuse me was great to see and it'll be good to have him back for the long haul i
absolutely love that trade he's gonna he's gonna be a lot of unsung heroes uh throughout the rest
of this season guys um tomorrow mariner's got logan gilbert they're going up against walker bueller
i think this is a good time to get uh the podres you got to get one win against them this year
I know you're not going to win the better cup for 2026 now,
but I like the Mariners pitching matchup chances in this one.
But, man, I just, I hope we don't have this same conversation tomorrow night.
And hopefully my mic's working tomorrow night.
But we'll talk to you guys then.
The Mariners lose this one two to zero.
I'm tired of have the same conversation, guys.
All you have to do is throw a left against them.
Hopefully it changes sometime soon.
But until then, go, Maryland.
Thank you.
