This is the Mariners Postcast.
Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners.
Part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Oh, boy.
Guys, we might have something really special in Colt Emerson.
And, man, when you see plays like that in the last couple of innings,
it kind of, obviously the Mariners get the 8-3 win today.
They go to 33 and 29 on the season.
It's their eighth straight win.
But man alive, that is a dude that is playing third base right now.
And, you know, he picks it in the eighth inning.
And then that kind of sliding catch to end the game, Colt freaking Emerson.
And he does that on a day where he gets two hits, goes two for four.
just he continues to look the part and wow that is uh that's so fun to watch um yeah i'll just say
that really quick off the bat because that was just fresh in my mind after watching that play
and uh you know you're up five runs you can easily switch off but that doesn't happen with this guy
he's he's legit he's legit um yeah mariner's postcast hi guys my name's Anderson hurst um i go live after
every single Mariner baseball game.
Appreciate everyone hanging out today.
The Mariners win eight to three.
Over the Mets, they win the series.
It's their eighth straight win,
and they can go for a third straight series sweep tomorrow.
And again, this is all three of these series
that the Mariners have stacked up wins on.
It's been kind of a different type of way to win baseball games.
And with the Mets series,
it's a team that came in hot.
And, you know, obviously they're super talented.
They have one of the highest payrolls in baseball.
And they start off incredibly slow in the first, you know,
a month and a half, almost two months of the season.
And they finally feel like they're starting to figure it out a little bit.
And then they run into the buzzsaw that is the Seattle Mariners.
So it's good to be that team, guys.
And again, I'm going to say this again.
It just looks like they're playing different baseball.
They're a different baseball team than the team.
that I saw against the Royals just about a week and a half ago.
It's a completely different baseball team.
I don't know what happened.
I really don't because nothing really changed in that time,
but there was a wake-up call of some sort,
and I'm starting to feel like that it's reverberating through the entire team right now.
That was awesome.
That was really, really cool.
Johnny Parada, it gets a three-run shot.
That's kind of the big moment of this game.
and then right after that, Colt Emerson lays down a bun for a hit,
the 20-year-old testing the third baseman there, let's go.
Everything's kind of clicking right now.
And that's what happens when you have eight-game winning streaks.
But this is the Mariners team that we expected to see.
You know, not winning every single baseball game, obviously,
but this type of baseball, right?
This is why you were so frustrated in the first, you know, 60 games of the season
because you knew this was there.
This was always there.
It shouldn't take until now to get to that point,
but man,
am I glad that it's happening now?
And when you're playing like this,
it's so much easier to push buttons as a manager
because you have guys that are doing their roles correctly
that are stepping up.
You're playing from ahead,
which is so much easier to manage baseball games.
And everything's going right now for the Mariners.
Julio had a little mini slump, like the last three or four games, I mean.
And then all of a sudden he just breaks out of that today with an absolute moonshot.
Great to see.
You know, Luke Rayleigh goes 0 for four.
Finally has a day, oh, for five, excuse me, at two K's.
Finally has a day where he doesn't get a hit.
But, you know, it's going to happen.
But the bottom of the lineup, guys, the last five spots, Cole Young, Dom Kanzone, Patrick
Wisdom, Johnny Parada, and Colt Emerson.
a total of 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 of the Mariners 11 hits come from those guys.
Three from Canzone, who again, I'm going to say this over and over again,
and you saw Luke Rayleigh against the lefty look terrible.
Dom Canzon is the guy that should be playing every day, not Luke Rayleigh.
And I realize that you look at the numbers, and Luke Rayleigh has better numbers than Dom Canzone does.
It's because Luke Rayleigh's better against righties.
then Dom-Kanzone is, but Dom-Kanzone is better against lefties.
So obviously, Dom-Kanzone overall, compared to what he is versus lefties,
he's better versus right-ies, but he's not better than Luke Rayleigh versus right-ies.
It's kind of a weird way to say it all.
But Dom-Kanzone's more platoon proof, so to speak.
Luke Rayleigh should just be playing versus right-handed pitching.
That's the reason he has such good numbers is because the Mariners have been putting him in good positions to succeed.
So that's just my take.
And, you know, you saw it again tonight.
Luke Grayley struggles against the lefty.
Dom Kanzone gets another single.
He's not going to be the masher,
Dom Kanzonis.
He's not the full-on power guy like he is against the right-handed pitchers,
but he still puts the ball in play.
And he gets, yes, actually is a pretty good contact tool against left-handed pitching.
So I love seeing that.
That's just a small thing.
It's a small thing.
Yeah.
Let's start with Logan Gilbert.
Start with the start.
We always do that here on the Mariners Postcast.
It's a big part of the reason why the Mariners are finally starting to stack wins here
is their starting pitching is rounding into form.
You know, when Luis Castillo was struggling earlier this year,
when Logan Gilbert was kind of going through a couple lumps here and there,
before Bryce Miller was healthy,
that was part of the hit or miss nature of the Mariners during their first, you know,
60 games of the season.
But ever since the Bryce Miller came back and the Mariners implemented the piggyback,
and Luis Castillo's looked more like his former self,
you're getting super consistent outings from all six of your starting pitchers,
depending on who's in that role.
So,
and that's a huge part of why you're able to get eight-game winning streaks like the
Mariners are on right now.
So Logan Gilbert tonight,
look,
I mean,
his final line doesn't look great because he only goes five and a third,
four hits,
three runs all earned.
It does get the eight Ks.
But,
I mean, it's going to be what happens when you give up, you know, a two-run shot and a solo shot.
It's really, it's just two hits that are against Logan where he should be better.
And that's kind of what he's been susceptible all year long.
He's had these outings where he looks so dominant, so in control, and then for whatever reason, one batter,
or maybe it's a stretch of two, he walks someone and then gives up a homer.
things seem to fall apart pretty quickly with Logan Gilbert.
So it is a little frustrating watching him because you see the ceiling with him.
You see the stuff.
And honestly, if you're looking at just stuff, I think he probably has the best stuff on the Mariners.
With his extension, with his splitter, with the way that fastball works, right?
When he's on, he is on more than anyone else.
but he's susceptible to leaving the slider over the zone a little bit.
And when he does, you know, give up the long ball, you know,
and maybe he has some efficiency issues because he doesn't give up a lot of soft contact.
He either strikes a guy out, walk someone, or they hit a ball hard.
That's kind of the pitcher he is now.
So, I mean, it's, like I said, the result itself, you get the win,
but you can expect a little bit more from your guy.
And it's just, again, it's frustrating because you see the ceiling of what he can be as a starting pitcher.
Now, when you have guys like Brian Wu, George Kirby, who actually has struggled a couple times and we'll see him tomorrow if he's able to bounce back a little bit on his end, Emerson Hancock's look fantastic in the way Bryce Miller's pitching right now.
You can afford to have these Logan Gilbert starts and especially the way of the offense is playing nowadays.
So again, we're putting things in perspective here.
but I'm just looking at it specifically from a Logan Gilbert lens.
He was okay.
And it's all about the result, right?
You can look good for 80% of your outing.
You can look really good.
And then those couple hitters that you kind of leave something over and they get mashed,
then that kind of ruins your whole outing.
And that's the way pitching works in today's baseball.
So hopefully he can kind of find ways to get a little bit more efficient
and get deeper into games, and, you know, we'll kind of go from there.
But really the story of the day is the Mariners offense.
And I want to talk about a couple unsung heroes because we'll do that in the second half of
the today show.
Mariners win eight to three over the New York Mets.
They moved to 33 and 29 on the season.
Their eighth straight win, eight is great, baby.
Let's make it nine.
Three straight series sweeps looks really clean when you're going through wins and losses
down the calendar.
We'll come back.
We'll discuss a little bit more about some unsung hero talk.
here on the Mariners Postcast after yet another Mariners victory.
If you've got a sweet tooth like I do, you know how tough it is to find that perfect treat
without all the sugar.
That's why cotton candy, five-hour energy shot, brings that nostalgic flavor back in a whole new
way.
This is that classic cotton candy taste you remember, but with tasty caffeine boost and zero sugar,
it's a quick, easy way to satisfy that sweet craving while keeping things simple and on the go.
If you've always liked cotton candy but can't be caught eating sweets all day, this is a perfect
alternative flavor.
Really does bring that throwback fruity vanilla vibe and it's surprisingly smooth.
And I like how convenient it is too.
It's just a small portable shot.
You can grab whenever you need a little pick me up.
It's become a go-to when I want something sweet without going overboard.
You know, I got a lot going on whether I'm, you know, I'm a golf course or maybe I'm grinding
at KJR and then, you know, unable to find ways to get meals in.
or a cup of coffee or something like that.
Five-hour energy is perfect for that.

Welcome back.
Mariner's postcast, Anderson Hurst here.
I wish I was at the ballpark today eating some cotton candy.
That looks like a beautiful day to be there.
And watching this Mariners baseball team play right now is they win their eighth straight game,
eight three over the Mets.
Logan Gilbert gets the win.
You get home runs from Packers.
from Patrick Wisdom, from Johnny Paradea, and Julio Rodriguez.
And once again, you know, I mentioned this a few days ago.
When the Mariners are hitting home runs, this offense clicks.
And that's a very generic statement to say it's obvious, right?
When the team hits home runs, their offense is better.
Duh.
That's everyone can say that.
But I think it's especially true for this Mariners team because there's less pressure
on RISP situations.
and then because there's less pressure,
I feel like they actually perform better in those situations later in games
because they feel like,
all right,
we're still,
even if we don't get this one swing in the bat and we're,
but we get the run we absolutely need.
So it's fun watching this Mariners team play baseball.
They hit home runs.
They play good defense like Colt Emerson today.
I have been waiting to see some elite infield defensive plays.
You know,
we've seen a couple good catch.
from Robles and Wrights, a couple caught stealings from Cal when he's been in there.
But, you know, haven't seen really the flashes from the glove from Julio Rodriguez in
the center that I've been used to in the last few years.
And having Colt Emerson step in and instantly, you know, A, pick up a new position
and relatively new.
I realize he played a little bit of that in the minor leagues, but he's been almost
exclusively a shortstop for his entire development process.
So sliding to his right to play third base, just looking so clean.
The arm strength is there.
The range is there.
The reactions are there.
The fielding is there.
It's amazing how this guy can just walk in to the major leagues.
And it almost seemed like at the time he wasn't ready.
And the Mariners were like, hey, we kind of just need you to step up because Brandon Donovan's getting hurt.
But yeah, he's the real deal on both sides.
sides of the ball. You know, and even before he was really getting results in his first,
you know, three, four, five games, you could tell the process was there for him, right? He takes
extremely good at bats, puts the bat to the ball. Strikeout's a little, strikeout percentage
is a little high. I expect that to come down. He has too good of a contact tool to continue to be
a high strikeout guy, but he's aggressive. And that's what's going to happen when you get to
this level for the first time. And he can put the ball in play.
both lines in the gaps, over the fence,
lays down a bunt.
And again, you know,
I'm not someone who's a huge fan of sacrifice buntz.
I'm going to raise it again.
I'm not a huge fan of sacrifice bunting for hit.
I am always game for, especially if it's there.
Take first base.
And the reason I don't like sacrifice punts is it's giving away out.
You're not giving away and out if you're bunting for a hit.
So there's that. Great to see Cole Tamerson. But let's talk about a couple unsung heroes today.
And I'm going to go to the two obvious ones. It's going to be Johnny Parade and Patrick Wisdom.
Look, the Ameriners have had to have this next man up mentality. With this winning streak,
while Brandon Donovan, your off-season acquisition is on the IL, while Cal Raleigh,
your just finished his runner-up MVP campaign is on the IL. It's impressive.
enough that they're doing this, but doing it without those guys. It tells me that there's
definitely a, all right, I'm going to step up and make a play. And I realize Patrick Wisdom,
like overall throughout the whole season, hasn't exactly done a lot, right? He's been one of those
guys that everyone doesn't really want to see versus left-handed pitching, and he's been, as of now,
since they DFA'd Connor Joe, he's been that guy with Rob Reff Snyder. But he gets it done today.
And it's less in a platoon situation because you're facing a right-handed pitcher, but it's the fact that, you know, Josh Naylor, you might be without him for, you know, a few games, right?
I don't know exactly the timeline on that.
He's still day-to-day, according to Dan Wilson.
We'll kind of see how much his back is going to be, you know, there, that that spasm supposedly that happened last night.
but you know Patrick wisdom steps into the to the starting role tonight at first base and looks
the part you know um hits the home run not just the home run too though uh you know gets a couple
walks sorry just the one walk and the home run um but you know it's that's all you need to do right
you're not expecting to be a top three or four hitter in this lineup you're expecting to
not be an automatic out and walk in a home run will absolutely get it done today for
Patrick Wisdom. Johnny Paradeo, though, man, I want to, I want to start a conversation because
even before this home run, I think it was pretty at least 50-50 in my eyes as to who deserves
to be the backup catcher when Cal Raleigh comes back, because obviously Cal is going to start most
the time. You got Mitch Garver, you got Johnny Parada. And our guy, Colby Pat, noted as the
Lockdown Mariners podcast, check out their episode both today and tomorrow, by the way. They'll kind of
recap a little bit of this game. Look forward to tomorrow and all that stuff.
But he mentioned something that I think I 100% agree with. You can be done with
Ref Schneider at this point. Have Mitch Garver be that kind of the lefty killer, so to speak,
if they need to pinch hit someone versus left-handed pitching for Luke Rayleigh, so to speak,
then that should be Mitch Garver, not Rob Rest Snyder. And then have your actual backup catcher
be Johnny Pareda. I think that makes a ton of sense because right now I have more faith in Mitch Garver than Rob Reff-Snyder in any
situation, right-eys, left-eas, anything. And that leaves you more flexibility with three catchers
on the roster. If someone does get injured again, if, you know, maybe you want to make a move earlier in the game,
and then you still have another catcher as an emergency backup, there's so much more flexibility with that
than just having Rob Ref Snyder, who's literally just there for one reason to strike out.
No, I'm just kidding.
No, he's there to hit left hand of pitching.
And when you're not doing that, it's not really providing a lot of value to the team.
Mitch Garver can do that, A, you can do that better right now.
And B, he can do that while also providing cover at the catcher position.
So I feel like the answer moving forward when Cal Raleigh comes back again.
I don't want Johnny Parado off this team.
I think he's excellent defensively, better than Mitch Garver is defensively.
And then he's showing that it's not just the home run.
He has a different type of swing than a lot of other Mariners do on this team.
He's very long through the zone.
He's not going to hit a lot of homers, but he's a contact first catcher kind of like,
reminds me a little bit of Christian Vasquez, to be completely honest.
I know it's kind of a weird poll, but a contact first defense catcher.
And it's, you know, he's done his part.
He's absolutely done his part.
And I feel like he deserves to stay on this baseball team more than Rob Restaner.
does. That's just me. But you don't have to make that decision right now. It's great to see him
continue to do really good things. And he's fun to watch. The pitchers like him. I think he
deserves to stay when Cal Raleigh makes his way back onto the roster. Mariners win this one,
eight to three over the New York Mets. They're going for the sweep, a third straight sweep,
a sweep of sweeps, so to speak. Tomorrow, remember no postcast during weekday day games. You'll just
get a locked-on Mariners episode with Ty and Colby.
They'll post that right after the game anyway.
It would be a little redundant to have a postcast and then a tie and Colby episode right
after that.
So you'll get basically your post-game content from them right after the game.
Hopefully they're talking about once again nine in a row at that point and then a sweep
of sweeps, as I like to say.
Let's keep it rolling, guys.
George Kirby on the mound tomorrow.
I feel like they can keep this going.
Let's ride this as long as we possibly can.
gain some ground in the ALS because really you haven't a ton because the Rangers keep winning as well.
So it's important to kind of keep building off of what you're doing right now and just keep playing the same type of baseball that you've been playing for the last, you know, week and a half.
So good stuff.
Mayers win.
Talk to you on Friday, day off Thursday, talk to you on Friday after the game.
Let's get nine in a row.
