Starting point is 00:00:03 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day. No, Chris Crawford, you can't put the dance music on. You're going to put the dance music. I know our vibes seem to be improved after this, just stinker of a baseball game. But no, we should not, we should do our listeners and watchers.
Starting point is 00:00:36 well by breaking down something. Because my God, I don't have much for you guys tonight. I'm going to be completely honest. There's not much to talk about from today's game. The offense stunk. Logan Evans wasn't good. Yeah. It's your manager's postcast.
Starting point is 00:00:57 I'm Manich and Hers. Christopher Crawford to my left in case you guys didn't know that. Welcome in to those of you who like to suffer or if you like to drink tears of opposing fans, Sacramento fans, if you're from Sacramento, if you're from Oakland, if you're from Vegas, or you dislike the A's for whatever reason. Welcome, as always. But yeah, that's Mariner Baseball right now. Unfortunately, when Logan Evans pitches, Chris Crawford, initial thoughts on the loss.
Starting point is 00:01:26 So I've talked about it so many times, and I'm just going to tell you again, it's ceiling and floor, right? You see the floor of this baseball team. The floor of this baseball team is getting worked by a pitcher who in his home park has been as bad as any pitcher at his home park in baseball today. And no, the starting pitching wasn't good. The Relief Court did a nice job. Thank you, I believe, to Texas's opponent, because I believe the Rangers lost tonight. Somebody can tell me if I'm wrong there.
Starting point is 00:01:59 I think so. So that's good. That's good. The thing about doing a daily show is that you just kind of have to... It's top eight. Angels are winning seven-four. Okay. Go, Angels. Go Angels.
Starting point is 00:02:13 We're all big Angels fans, big fans of Tim Salmon and Chuck Finley and players that were retired by the time Anders was born. Yeah, this stunk. This was just a really crappy effort. And let me just say this, effort, right? Like, it's not just about the loss. It looks like this team so many times. It's not just me picking on it, right? Not just me being a prisoner of the moment.
Starting point is 00:02:39 There are just times where the effort on this team just looks so lackluster, and today was one of those days. Yeah. It's funny because Uncle Dave here puts out, what's up with Hancock? I'd rather have him over Evans. And then when they swap Emerson Hancock for Logan Evans, Everson's like, I'd rather have Logan Evans over Emerson Hancock. That's just who they are, man.
Starting point is 00:03:02 They are bad. I don't say bad fifth starters in MLB, but lower end for sure. Like imagine if Kendrick versus Drake, but both of them sucked, right? Like, like, like, that's kind of where we are right now, right? Like, yeah. And then, you know what, imagine Kendrick versus Drake, but also you had a Z that sucks, but also is not on his prime anymore. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:29 And what if you had somebody like ASAP Rocky ready to go when he, healthy, right? And that might be Bryce Miller, right? Like, imagine that, boy, Bryce Miller getting compared to ASAP Rocky. You'll only find that here, folks. Yeah, I mean, let's just get into it. Logan Evans wasn't good enough tonight. And the one encouraging thing I saw from Logan Evans tonight was there was some decent swing and miss. There was some decent swing and miss stuff. The, the slider in particular, was giving hitters trouble. And the first two winnings I thought were pretty darn solid. He just can't avoid the big inning. He just can't avoid the big inning. He just can't. And it's, you know, he was pretty decent in that last outing. I can't remember who it was
Starting point is 00:04:11 against because I can't even remember my own name. I'm looking here. Chris referred. Okay. Okay. Interesting. It's not a bad name. Father of J.P. Crawford. Father of J.P. Crawford, who unfortunately I got to talk about. The, uh, that last start was okay. It was fine. And in fact, Anders, you mentioned like, if this is can be is what Logan Evans is, it's okay, right? Yeah. But now we see that's not really what Logan Evans is. Right? It was L.A. last time out, by the way. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:38 Yeah, that's right. Against the Angels. How do I forget? It's a four game series, obviously. Somebody else is pitching. Hey, you know what? When you do a daily recap show, they all blend together,
Starting point is 00:04:47 man. Really do. And we really appreciate the thousands of dollars we get per game for this thing. But sometimes it's a little bit of a chore. Sometimes it's a little bit of a chore. It sure helps to have a great crowd like we do every game. I need two on a loss like this.
Starting point is 00:05:02 Hello. Tell your friends. liked the video let's go i just love it i love it so much and um you know but we see now that logan evans floor is incredibly low incredibly low uh that home run he gave up to brett rooker was an awful pitch an awful pitch you know he bounces back a little bit and then he throws a hanger to shay langilliers and double shortly after and a liner down the line i don't think the effort from randy or rose arena on that f double down the line very good either, but, yeah, it's just not good enough.
Starting point is 00:05:37 It's not good enough. You only score one run tonight, so it's hard to get too man at the starting pitcher, I suppose. But you are putting yourself in a position of failure when your starter gives up six runs against a talented, powerful, but not great athletics lineup. Yeah, I agree with that assessment. The lineup itself was just not, yeah, don't break your TV. please don't.
Starting point is 00:06:03 Our faces are nice. I don't know if you're watching us on your TV. But if you are, please don't break it. That means you don't like us. This is ridiculous. Look at all of that. I'm shaming my head this weekend. Do it.
Starting point is 00:06:15 Do it. I'm not. Just so you guys know. I'm not shaking my head this weekend. Please do it. This H, as someone mentioned, is not for Houston. It's for Harvard. My sister went to Harvard and played soccer there.
Starting point is 00:06:25 Yeah, he's an elitist. He's not a bad person. I'm not an elitist. I didn't go to Harvard. I went to Seattle. You. Like, let's be complete. completely bleep and honest here.
Starting point is 00:06:34 Oh, you have the boy handles of a Yaley, sir. Yeah. Athletics lineup, not awful. They've been pretty hot lately. Again, I think this personally puts into more perspective how good Luis Castillo was last night. No doubt. As well. You know, I'm not trying to compare Louise Castillo to Logan Evans in terms of their, you know,
Starting point is 00:06:56 talent as a starting pitcher. But this lineup in this ballpark, can score some runs. They can. And it's just Vernes Fam. I don't know who that is. I've never heard that last name before. Freness Fam. Ben Williamson did fine. They talked about his game last night
Starting point is 00:07:20 for the entire broadcast because there was nothing else to talk about on the entire broadcast. So yeah, that's about what they did. They went down to Brad Adam about four times because to talk about Ben Williams game last night. So just to case you weren't watching the Root Sports broadcast. That's exactly what happened multiple times.
Starting point is 00:07:41 Because who cares about the game that's actually going on? Anyways, sorry, I'm kind of on one tonight. No, it's okay. Offense stunk. Let's talk about J.P. Crawford. Because I think of all the things that happened tonight, you saw some ups and downs. Julio had a couple good at bats, a couple bad at bats. Cal still continues hitting streak. Randy does get his 20-20 for the fifth. straight season. I might have something to say about that a little bit later when we get to a certain segment that we talk about every single episode. But let's talk about J.P. Crawford, because I think, you know, there was a stretch. I can't remember which series it was. It was a one right before the
Starting point is 00:08:20 Brewer's series where he struggled defensively. But he kind of bounced back a little bit in just terms of, you know, doing your job a little bit and maybe just letting Ben Williams and could cover more ground so you don't have to. But it kind of showed itself. up again tonight. J.P. Crawford at shortstock. So real quick, some people talking about Tyler Locklear, I did not see Tyler Locklear is getting called up. Yes, yes. Tyler Locklear is getting promoted.
Starting point is 00:08:44 What does that mean? Is that, is it trade coming? Is he, are they finally DFA and Dylan Moore? Probably not. I don't know. I don't know either. It's going to be really interesting to see because it only really makes sense to call him up if you're going to play him, right? So we'll let Ty and Colby take care of that one
Starting point is 00:09:04 because I think that's one that we just don't have a great answer to, to be honest with you. But I hope he has well. He's done really well in Tacoma. Now, that's an easy question. It's because, you know, Skeeters knows more about baseball. He knows that Ben Williamson is a bad offensive player. So apparently, Skeeter is also like 5 foot four. So that's kind of answer.
Starting point is 00:09:24 I would never do that again to Joe. Joe Sheehan is one of the best people. And apparently said some nice things about me on the radio. He always does. He likes you better than Ian. Oh. talk about low-hanging fruit. So J.P. Crawford, and maybe I'm just tired of talking about this is why I keep talking about anything else, right?
Starting point is 00:09:44 Yeah. Okay, hold on. Is it the defense, the offense that bother him more right now? The defense. It's both for me. That's totally fair. That is totally fair, especially hitting at the top of the lineup, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:57 You know, he gets on to lead off the game, so that's a nice start. But then the rest of the game just, the defense is what I notice. And it's so interesting because I'm going to do the short version of this because we want to do the short version of the show, right? J.P. Crawford, when you watch Ben Williamson make those fantastic plays, that makes judging defense easy, right? Because you see him taking outs away.
Starting point is 00:10:23 But when you watch JP Crawford, it takes a little bit more nuance. And I hate saying that word nuance because it makes me sound like the elitist now. But what it does is, is it you don't, unless you're paying closer attention to it, you don't notice the balls that get by him that you would like an above average shortstop to make. Right. And in honesty, not an above average shortstop. Average shortstop. There's just too much of it.
Starting point is 00:10:50 There is too much weak contact that J.P. Crawford doesn't get to. And defense is not just about making the plays that are hit right in front of you, right? That's not what defense is. Not a feeling percentage anymore. We're better than that. We're way better than that. Run prevention and how you prevent runs is you prevent hits. You prevent people from getting on base.
Starting point is 00:11:13 JP Crawford just doesn't do it enough. Yeah. And especially at a position like Shortstop where you, and I talked about this on Ian's show today, he popped in, said hi, welcome. But one of my, you know, I don't want to say caveats for Ben Williamson's performance yesterday. And, you know, oh, do we even need to upgrade their base anymore?
Starting point is 00:11:31 I still say yes because there are positions where you want elite defensive players, right? And you feel like you need them. And that's a catcher, shortstop, and center field. I think you have two of those three right now in Seattle. And there's positions where it matters less to have an elite defensive player. Now, I probably say debatable with, you know, third base and corner outfield. You can go either one, I think. But I'd probably put third base slightly above corner outfield in terms of having an elite
Starting point is 00:12:00 defensive player. But it's definitely less valuable to have someone there than it is at shortstop. And that's both like a compliment or a thought about Ben Williams, how good his defense is and how bad J.P. Crawford's defense is. So I just, it sucks. It sucks that you have this conundrum of two guys right now that are both neither of them hitting. It was one thing of J.P. Crawford's hitting at the top of the lineup and he has an 800 OPS and he's getting on base at a 400 clip, right?
Starting point is 00:12:28 And his defense is bad. Fine. You can live with that. But he's not doing that right now. So what value is he bringing in the team? It's tough. It's really tough. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:40 Yeah, I think I'm done talking about that for a little bit. We've exhausted that. You don't want to talk about your son too poorly. I understand. No, but I do really want to talk about GameTime, Hugh, like really, really badly. All right. Today's episode is brought to you by, you guessed, you guessed at Game Time Hugh. And so is this hat that I'm wearing for locked-on Mariners fans,
Starting point is 00:13:04 like me. You know, this is a Harvard hat. This one hits the mark. Game Day, Hugh makes clean, no logo gear with team-inspired colorways. For every pro and college fan base, it's all about letting your colors speak for you. There's no giant logos. It's just smart, versatile style that works on Game Day, on the course, or anywhere in between. You know, that's a fun thing to have, like, that type of stuff for the golf course, right?
Starting point is 00:13:27 Because you don't want to look like the boring dude. You don't want to look like the dude who also is, like, being sponsored by the team that you like, right? You like something in between. So when you shop with Game Day Hugh and you get that type of stuff, you get that in between. You're supporting your favorite team, but you're also not looking like a corporate show. Yeah. Well, I have that issue sometimes too because like sometimes I'm, you know, golfing with cracking people and I don't want to wear cracking gear to all the cracking stuff. It's just like, okay, you're a weird dude. Where is something else. So yeah, you don't want to have that stuff. Game Day, Hugh is perfect for that. Right now you can get 15% off with code
Starting point is 00:14:03 MLB 15 at gameday hue.com. That's game day hue.com. The code even stacks on bundle deals. So now's the time to load up. Let your colors talk because colors speak louder than words. That's game day hue.com code MLB 15. All right. I forgot to get rid of this overlay.
Starting point is 00:14:24 Excuse me. There we go. Let's, you know. Real quick. Luke Riley to the IL. That explains the lock. Just saw that as well. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:31 Okay. So that makes a lot of sense. Back stiffness. Here's what I'll say. I will say that this is an audition for Tyler Lockler. This is an audition in a couple ways. It's an audition for Tyler Lockler to show, hey, maybe I belong on this team, or it's an audition to say, hey, you can trade me now for a really good baseball player. So it's somewhere in between those two.
Starting point is 00:14:56 My unsung hero. I don't want to do a villain tonight. Is there anybody who deserves to be? Julio doesn't deserve to be an unsung hero with a guy. couple of hits and one of them, an absolute bloop shot. You know what? I'm going to have to go an unsung villain because here we go. One hitter in this lineup is hitting 254, 292, 312. One hitter in this lineup is now hitting 241-308-319. Do you know who that is? Cole Young. It's Cole Young. And the difference there is pretty negligible, man. And I think you've got to start. And I know his WRC Plus is so much better
Starting point is 00:15:35 since the one for 19 start. There's just a few too many games like this that suggest to me that I don't necessarily feel super confident having him play every day for a championship contending team. And I still want this to be a championship contending team, obviously. So that's my unsung villain. It's cold.
Starting point is 00:15:54 All right. I don't hate that. I know we kind of went through a stretch where I kept mentioning, hey, he could slowly, but sure, better and better and better. And I didn't disagree with you to be fair, right?
Starting point is 00:16:04 Right. Right. he's plateaued. And this isn't anything against his future outlook or anything at all. Like, it's okay if he needs to go back down to AAA. That's fine. He's a 21-year-old.
Starting point is 00:16:17 He's one of the youngest position players in baseball right now, I think. Right. So it's like, that's fine. It's just right now on this team reacting to this game as a major league baseball player. Yeah, I agree. I think it's an unsung villain. Good shout. I'm going to go unsung hero.
Starting point is 00:16:32 For me, Sorry, I just saw one of the comments. I'm going to go on Sung Hero Randy Rosa Rana. Now, I know you mentioned his slight laziness on the double for Logan Evans. I think it was in the fifth inning. See how quickly I did that? Plausible deniability, my friend. I didn't mean to do that.
Starting point is 00:17:01 No, it's got to be Randy. 20-20 season. Yeah, that's great. Put everything else's perspective, like if that's kind of the main positive offensively tonight. Hey, seasons of 2020 in a row is pretty dang good. It's fantastic. And thank you, Randy, for giving me a heck of a laugh when you tried to take the
Starting point is 00:17:19 base. And then you were like, maybe we can do that later. Maybe we can do that later. So that was fun. That was fun. And look, the Banners are going to get a 2020 season from Julio. That's cool, too. and he's going to, he needs to get it before Bobby Wood Jr. does to break the record of
Starting point is 00:17:35 be the first player to do it. So there's a little bit of pressure on him to get those two homers, but I like that call. Yeah, and like we've talked about it, 2020 season isn't what he used to be because of the ability to steal bases and how much easier it is now with the step-off rule, bigger bases, all that stuff. And honestly, just pictures less of an ability to hold runners on base. But it's still something, I think. And he actually, the reason, the Mariners scored their one run is because he stole that base. To be completely honest. That's a great point.
Starting point is 00:18:06 Jorge Falunco hits the single right after that and he scores in the next play. If he doesn't steal that base, the Mariners don't score a run. That's why speed matters. Yeah, absolutely. No question about it. Anders was giving me P-by-play by play when P-by-play. Ooh, that's a very, very different thing. That kind of sounded like Ben might have gotten that ball out.
Starting point is 00:18:27 Yeah, God. We were getting pretty excited. but it looks like it did it looks like you got all of it and hey maybe he did anders we have a chance to get out of here under 20 minutes let's do it all right guys really appreciate it like the video if you haven't already we go along a lot so please forgive us for not going 20 minutes this time there's just not a lot from this game we will of course still be with you tomorrow i think it's another 705 remember correctly so uh we'll be with you guys hopefully the mariners get the series win is it George Kirby tomorrow I want to say.
Starting point is 00:18:59 No, it's Brian Wu. Brian Wu against Jeffrey Springs. Springs has pitched well against him in the past. This will be an interesting one. And by the way, Tyler Lockler should be in the lineup because it's a lefty tomorrow. So I will be curious to see how he does. Dylan, please know more. Oh, poor guy.
