Starting point is 00:00:04 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. What's going on, fellas? Ladies, gentlemen, anyone who's joining us, welcome to the Mariners Postcast. My name's Anderson Hurst. I get to talk about a mariner win today, and it's fun when the Mariners win. Five to one, over the Diamondbacks.
Starting point is 00:00:35 They move to 30 and 29 on the season. First time over five. since March 30th, two months ago exactly. And the Mariners, it feels like, are starting to pick things up a little bit in the later portion of May here. And it starts to the offense, but what it really starts with actually, I should say, is Brian Wu. And he was fantastic tonight. He might have been his best start in terms of the eye test for me. that I've seen him throwed this year.
Starting point is 00:01:11 So, I mean, his fastball was working. His sweeper was working. I mean, he took a perfecto into the fifth inning, which, you know, it happens not super often, but that's not nothing, right? So he was awesome. Two hits against him, seven innings. So you don't even have to use any of your high leverage guys. Two hits, nine Ks for Brian Wu, which is really funny.
Starting point is 00:01:38 Chris and I had a joke last year. during the postcast that every single time Brian Wu stepped on the mound, it was 9Ks, not more, not less. And it took him forever just to get to that 10 mark. I think he finally did at the end of last year or maybe it was the beginning of this year. But it's just the 9Ks. It's what he does every single time. Six or seven innings and nine Ks and no runs like today.
Starting point is 00:02:01 So that's the Brian Wu that we know and love. And it's great to see, you know, him dominate a really good deba back. lineup that had been really hot coming into this series. You can talk about the A's series, and they had started to scuffle before going to Sacramento and facing the Mariners. But it was a completely different story with this Diamondbacks team. And you've now won the series and I have a chance to sweep that series for the second sweep in a row. Fifth straight win for the Mariners. They're really starting to kind of put all phases of the game together. I mean, it is pretty interesting how the offense has started to go. The pitching looks like the pitching that
Starting point is 00:02:45 we're used to seeing from the Seattle Mariners. And I'm not, I don't know about you guys, but I'm not noticing the defensive gaffs that we were noticing earlier in the season. And maybe that there was some sort of come to Jesus moment, I feel like, after the Kansas City Royals series. but it's just it makes, I don't know, it makes kind of what happened earlier in the season and puts it all in perspective a little bit. So now it feels like they've kind of put all that behind them. There are a lot of question marks about this team before that moment. And I think that what they've done in the last five games, now granted,
Starting point is 00:03:31 it is just five games. And you've, I don't know, say dig, dug out of a hole because you're still in first place. in the ALS. But getting to above 500, where a lot of other teams across Major League Baseball are scuffling, that teams that you would think would be really good right now. So I think the Mariners are in a great spot right now. And one of your best players, Cal Rale is injured still. So I love where they're at. Their pitching is really starting to come in to form here at the perfect time. And everything else is just kind of falling into place. So really, really good to see a complete baseball game for your Seattle Mariners. Let's start with Brian Wu, though.
Starting point is 00:04:12 We start with the start every day here on the Mariners Postcast. And boy, did it start with him. Because right out of the gate, when he struck out, I think five of the six first, five of the first six batters in the game, you could tell this was going to be a special day for Brian Wu. And having him look, that confident, his aura is just back completely. I know he had that couple start dip where he had a couple of bad starts in a row in the early part of May. He's broken out of that totally now. And I honestly, if I'm ranking who I feel most confident in on the mound of all the starters, it's Brian Wu's number one for me.
Starting point is 00:04:53 It's number one. So great to see him get through the seventh inning. I think it was the right move to probably pull him at that point. Not that he was faltering at all, but you were up five zero. you can afford to, you know, use Cooper, Chriswell and Alex Hoppe in this game to finish it off and have him go out on a high note, so to speak. The offense. Let's get to those guys real quick because, guys, they were for a long portion of the season,
Starting point is 00:05:25 they were getting ridiculed left and right. And those, these last five games. And you could say what you want about the first three being in Sacramento, Little League Ballpark. agree with you, by the way. It definitely, there is a caveat with playing in that ballpark, but then doing the last two here in Seattle. You could also say that the D-back's pitching leaves a lot to be desired, but, you know, they're big league pitchers and doing, and the Mariners have struggled against those
Starting point is 00:05:56 types of guys all year long. So it's just, it's much better at bats. It's, they're starting to slug way more. I mean, Julio, uh, hitting in. at the end of May is he has an 801 OPS. And if we see what we normally see from Julio Rodriguez in the second half of the season, that's only going to get higher. So he's actually started off the season offensively extremely well.
Starting point is 00:06:22 Right now, you have one, two, three, four guys in your lineup that have an above 800 OPS. Three of those four are everyday players. Julio Rodriguez, Randy or Rosarena, and Colt Emerson are your everyday players with Luke Rayleigh, of course, being the platoon player. And he's close to an everyday player anyway because he's your platoon versus right-handed pitching. So, I mean, that's really good. And then if Dom Canso puts together a good day, he could get there because he's at
Starting point is 00:06:57 785. So that's a good lineup, guys. And that's that's without Cal Raleigh playing or hitting when he is playing. And that's without Josh Naylor really kind of getting going. He's definitely picked it up as of late in the last few weeks, which is good to see. But this offense just feels so much better in what we expected to see from them. And the big reason why is they're hitting home runs again. They're hitting home runs again.
Starting point is 00:07:23 And I know it's not as, you know, easy to rely on that moving forward. but it's how the Mariners are built. When they hit home runs, they're a successful offense. Without the home run ball today, you win one nothing. And those last couple innings are a lot more dicey. Actually, because I forgot they scored at the very end. It would have been 1-1 without the homers. So it's really important that it is important for them to find other ways to score runs for
Starting point is 00:07:55 sure. But having the home run ball kind of quote unquote bail you out a little bit on offense is really, really nice. So when you see guys, four guys hit home runs today, Julio hits one, Luke Rayleigh hits one, Dom Kanzone hits one, and Colt Emerson hits one. That's a really good sign for this offense moving forward. You can't expect that every single night. But when this team hits the long ball, they are in good shape. I'm going to take a moment after the break to talk about Colt Emerson, because I feel like I've waited a little bit, and I probably am going to jump the gun just a tad on saying he's the real deal, but I feel like he is.
Starting point is 00:08:45 We'll talk about why on the other half of the show. Mariners win this one, five to one over the Arizona Diamondbacks, win the series, go to above 500. They have a chance for a second straight sweep tomorrow, and then hopefully they get it done. We'll be right back with a little bit more on the Mariners Postcast. Nothing like watching a Mariners game, even when you get to watch it live. The excitement, the fans, the only problem getting tickets can feel like a grind. Long queues, surprise fees, prices jumping at checkout. I mean, there's so many reasons why, you know, the, The last second market can be very frustrating, especially with Mariners games.
Starting point is 00:09:32 That is not the case with game time. The GameTime app gives fans the advantage with constant innovation. It's how you unlock amazing tickets and experiences in just a few taps. It's simple to use. The game time guarantee means you get 100% authentic tickets delivered on time at the best price. And the best part is fees are included in the price. You see what you see is what you pay. you won't see any jumps, you know, for added fees after you've already chosen your tickets,
Starting point is 00:10:02 nothing like that. One of my favorites is the zone deals. So you can choose what section you want to sit in and save even more than you would save normally. And then game time selects your specific seat. So you still get to choose which part of the ballpark you're sitting in. And then you save more money. It's a win-win in my eyes. Two taps and it's done.
Starting point is 00:10:23 No stress. No hidden fees. just great seats in minutes. That's what makes it so easy to decide last minute to hit a game. Starting point is 00:10:46 Download the GameTime app today. Baseball season is here and now you can trade every game on Cal She, on Cal She, On Cali, you can trade every single game. And it's not just baseball. It's other stuff too. Maybe you're a Sonics fan and you were hoping Thunder would lose in game seven today. And you wanted to put a little juice on the spurs getting it done. Cali, you can do that.
Starting point is 00:11:13 I personally, I'm a soccer fan. Champions League Final was this morning. I put some juice on PSG to win because I believe Arsenal's run to the final was a little bit. fraudulent. I kid. Not really, but I did actually, you know, make that trade because I just believe that, you know, PSG was the better team. You can do that with any sport on Cal She. It's fantastic. You're trading against peers in a live market, meaning there's no house. And as the probability changes, you can buy in and out of your position. For a limited time, download the Calci app, use code locked on to get $10.K-A-L-S-H-I-K-CAL-S-H-I-K-C-T, trade on anything, 18-plus only.
Starting point is 00:12:02 Restrictions and eligibility requirements apply. Event contract trading involves risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Prices, values, and available markets may differ from those mentioned. For more information, see calci.com slash regulatory. Welcome back, Mariners Postcast, Anderson Hurst, with you guys. Maritors win this one five to one over the D-backs. Go to 30 and 29 on the season. Above 500 for the first time in two months.
Starting point is 00:12:34 We no longer have to have that quest. Hopefully this is the last time they even sniff being around the 500 mark or below 500 for that matter moving forward for the rest of the season. They can go for the sweep tomorrow. And I think they have a really good chance to do that because, I mean, the guys are just playing really good baseball right now. It's the opposite of what we were seeing. in the in the um casey royals series because i mean uh you got you're hitting um you're pitching
Starting point is 00:13:05 well and in my eyes from my eyes from my money the defense is playing a lot better recently uh in the last five games and i don't know if it's just a coincidence that you maybe you're pitching better so you're having less plays to make defensively um or maybe it's just all kind of clicking at once for this team. That's what it feels like to me that these guys just had a little bit of a wake-up call after that KC series. And it's good to see them kind of play some urgent baseball for the first time this year. And hopefully they can continue that moving forward. Let's talk about Colt Emerson. I mean, I talked about Julio. And Luke Rayleigh's just been a revelation this year. 279 batting average and a 930 OPS for Rayleigh. That's great to see. I love the role that they
Starting point is 00:13:51 have him into. I don't, I mean, he's not very good against the. left-handed pitching, but more often than not, you're going to face a righty. So, I mean, you're still getting a lot of Luke Rayleigh, which I love to see. Sam of Canzone, great to see him continue to do really good things on the offensive side of the ball. D.H is a good spot for him. And Julio, like I said, him hitting at this point in the season is a really big development for this team, especially with Cal Raleigh out and not hitting when he's in there. So, but I want to talk a little bit about Colt Emerson because I don't know, guys, it's not just a home run.
Starting point is 00:14:28 It's every single at bat that I see from this guy. He just gets the one hit today. He was one for three with a strikeout. But I mean, he battles. And even during the KC series, he had a four for four game. He's gap to gap. He can hit righties and lefties. He just, it's a professional at bat.
Starting point is 00:14:49 And that's so impressive from a 20-year-old. He plays good defense as well. I think he's actually starting to get pretty comfortable at third base, knows that he can kind of come into shortstop a little bit to help JP with his range, which is fine. But I love what I'm seeing from number four. You could tell why they gave him the contract before they even saw him play a game. He's a really good baseball player.
Starting point is 00:15:18 And he's still going to go through ups and down. It's what's going to happen with someone that's his age. But it's amazing to have someone that feels like he's a season veteran. And they talk about this on the broadcast all the time. He talks like one, which is impressive enough. But to act like one and look like one on the field at that age is so awesome to see. And you could tell why they're so excited for this guy in his future as a Seattle Mariners player for a long time.
Starting point is 00:15:48 One quick thing on the way they scored their run. Mitch Garver needs to not walk to the baseball. Also, but it's not just him, Alex Hoppe needs to cover home plate. Like, you just, you need to do that. So it's on both of them. And maybe Mitch Garver's lackadaisical nature was because Alex Hoppe wasn't covering home plate, but you allowed someone from second on a wild pitch to score. So that's a big negative for me.
Starting point is 00:16:19 We got piggyback tomorrow, ladies and gentlemen, so have fun with that one. It's starting with Bryce Miller, so they're going back to Bryce Miller starting, Luis Castillo coming in after. Hopefully they kind of learned from their lesson on that specific, excuse me, on that specific way the first time on that order,
Starting point is 00:16:42 that you don't have to pitch Castillo for the rest of the game if it's a close game, use your closer. Munoz didn't pitch today, so we should be available. Same with Ferreir, same with Brash, same with Bizarro. Whoever you need, Spire, do what you need to do. The full bullpen is there. If you have a league, great, then you can go Miller for five, Castillo for four, and thanks for coming.
Starting point is 00:17:03 But you don't need to absolutely just stick to that no matter what. So hopefully they learn their lesson. We'll see what happens tomorrow. It's a 110 first pitch. So we'll talk to you guys right after that. game. Hopefully the Mariners can get the sweep. Have a good one. The vibes are good. Seattle Sonics forever.
