Starting point is 00:00:03 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day. Seven in a row, baby. That is a way to win a baseball game right there. The Seattle Mariners take this one over the New York Mets with a three to two victory. They moved to 32 and 29 on the season. That's their seventh win in a row.
Starting point is 00:00:34 and it's another walk-off win for their third in four days. It's Cole Young that gets it done in extras. It's Colt Emerson and Josh Naylor that get it done in the nine-ending stretch. And the pitching was excellent once again tonight. And let's start there because I think that's where we always start with a start here on the Mariners Postcast. My name's Anderson Hurst. Emerson Hancock, fantastic. once again tonight.
Starting point is 00:01:05 Gives up two solo shots, but again, what has made Emerson Hancock so much better this year than in years past is the fact that he's limiting the walks. Those solo shots don't come with guys on base, and that could easily make this game look a lot differently if that were the case. No walks today, 7Ks, just the two solo shots, and those won't burn you, right? Yeah, you could have had better pitches in those situations, but that's exactly the reasoning why it's so important for him to limit the base runners by the free pass.
Starting point is 00:01:46 And his stuff is too good to play in just attack hitters, right? You don't need to give them free bases, make them come to you. and he's starting to get the strikeout stuff a little bit more as well. I love his sweeper action right now. He just looks like he's commanding that pitch with such confidence. He knows exactly when to go to it and count. It's not just a strikeout pitch for him right now anymore. It's turning into something that he can land in the zone if he needs to,
Starting point is 00:02:22 but more often than not if he needs a whiff. If he knows a hitter is going to be aggressive in a certain count, and it's not just to writeies, lefties as well. He's using it in perfect situations right now. And, you know, he kind of feeds in that sinker with his foreseamer really, really well as well. So just overall a fantastic outing from Emerson Hancock. And he continues to be one of the Mariners best starting pitchers this season. Has a shout to be the best. Wouldn't be my vote, but I would not really argue with you if you were to tell me that he's been the Mariner's best starting pitcher this year. So
Starting point is 00:03:00 so cool to see him continue to be really, really good. And the bullpen behind him, guys, Jose Ferreira comes in and just continues to be a dog. Matt Brash as well. Andres Munoz Munoz looked crisp in his ninth inning and then gave Spire with the scoreless 10th. This bullpen is elite, guys. It is elite when used correctly and has everyone healthy. And it's, It's been so nice to see Spire come back because that was a big moment in this game to get the top of the lineup, including Juan Soto, who hits both lefties and righties and has been on a tear as of late to not score a run and not even move the runner over. That tells you how good Spire was today, right? So excellent work from him there. And, you know, this is why having that off day for the bullpen yesterday with the piggyback.
Starting point is 00:03:55 was so nice because you could go to any guy you want now to close this game out, even though it did go to extras. We're a couple platoon situations that we might chat it a little bit about, but overall, there's nothing really too much to complain about this game. Mariners only get four hits, but when the Mets only get two hits, that ends up being just enough. And it was all lefties that get hits today. It's Josh Naylor with the solo homer.
Starting point is 00:04:23 It's Co. Young with the two singles and then Colt Emerson. Let's start with Colt Emerson because that swing was a thing of beauty. It was, I think after Sean Manai had come into this game, yes, it was. And God, that was such a sweet swing. Everyone, not everyone, but I've had a few people say, man, that looks like Griffey. And I was like, okay, it's really easy to see a sweet swinging left-handed bat for the Mariners. that's really young, come up and have success and then compare him to Ken Griffey Jr. But man, I am starting to see some similarities between just their swing paths, right?
Starting point is 00:05:02 The way he stays long in the zone. So he's able to get his barrel to different parts of the strike zone. It's so, so good to see. So, yeah, I just think Colt Emerson's been fantastic. And I don't want to jump the gun too much with him, but I am starting to get excited. to watch him play baseball every single day. His at-bats are just professional. We talked about it over the weekend.
Starting point is 00:05:30 It's another lefty, right? It's going to be one of those situations, but he's not going to be taken out of this lineup against left-handed pitchers. And he showed why today after that home run on a pitch that I believe was kind of out of the zone. So that's such good piece of hitting to get his barrel to that.
Starting point is 00:05:46 And he's fun to watch. Josh Naylor, let's talk about him for a quick second here. because good thing. He also gets the hit versus the lefty. And it was a massive hit because after the Mariners took the lead on the Emerson home run, at the end of Emerson Hancock's day, he gives up two solo shots and the Mets have the lead. And honestly, the way the Mariners' offense was looking, I didn't have a ton of confidence that they were going to come back in this game.
Starting point is 00:06:16 But Josh Naylor just absolutely tattoos a baseball in the, sixth inning, I believe it was. Seventh inning, excuse me. And it was right after Brooks Raleigh came in to replace Sean Mania, who looked fantastic today besides the Colt Emerson home run. And even that was a good pitch from Mania. But it was a great moment from Josh Naylor. The only negative is then he gets taken out of the game.
Starting point is 00:06:41 I wonder how much of that was precautionary, knowing that you had already pinch hit Patrick Wisdom, so you could easily just slide him over to first. base and then put Victor Robles and write. I don't know. That's going to be a question that I'm waiting to hear from. People in the chat will need to let me know if they hear from Dan Wilson in postgame because I am obviously unable to follow those quotes.
Starting point is 00:07:08 And if we hear anything, we'll let you guys know for sure. But it's, it sucks because Naylor, besides that, like first week, two weeks of the season has actually been really good for the Mariners' officer. offensively. And it's, it's weird. This is why this part of the season is kind of weird when you look at overall numbers, because you look at his, you know, 254 batting average in a 674 OPS. And it's like, okay, he's been underperforming, at least compared to what we expect of him. And yeah, I guess on the season as a whole, yes, that can be the case. But when you start over whatever like Josh Naylor did at the beginning of this season, that is going to immediately put you in a hole. And if you
Starting point is 00:07:49 take out that couple weeks stretch in the early part of the season. He's been a really consistent hitter for the Mariners for a long stretch now. And he showed it again today with another Homer versus a lefty. But hopefully it's not a long-term thing with him because I am not looking forward to seeing Patrick Wisdom play a lot of first base. It probably won't be. It'll probably be Luke Raley once again, which is funny. I thought we were past that, but it's a way to keep him in the lineup. Maybe Dom Canzon as well. Maybe Canzone goes to right. I don't know if they end up having that. But it is kind of weird because it feels like every time the Mariners get one of their guys back, another one gets injured, right? Because Brandon Donovan's about to come back.
Starting point is 00:08:33 I don't know the exact timeline, but he's supposed to be imminently returning. And then right as that happens, Josh Neiler. And of course, you still have Cal Raleigh on the aisle. So it feels like they haven't really had their full complement of position players specifically. you know, ready to go. And I hope when we get to that point, things will become a little more clear with, you know, who's playing in certain platoon situations and stuff like that. But I really, it sucks because I feel like this lineup with everyone in it
Starting point is 00:09:04 could be really, really productive. Let's take a quick break. We'll come back. We'll discuss the extra innings situation because there's a couple big plays, not just in the Mariners half, but in the Mets half as well. So we'll talk about that next. Mariners win seven in a row. They win three to two over the New York Mets.
Starting point is 00:09:22 They moved to 32 and 29 on the season. This is the Mariners Postcast. We'll be right back. There's nothing like watching a Mariners game live, and especially when they're hitting walk-offs like this one. And, you know, when you're in the ballpark, it makes everything that much more energetic, the excitement, the fans.
Starting point is 00:09:44 You see the celebrations of the players. You see everyone go out past second base when they're celebrating Cole Young hit that walk-off. Man, tonight is one of those nights that I wish I was in the ballpark for. It looked like a beautiful night in the skyline of Seattle as well. The only problem, though, sometimes getting tickets can feel like a grind. Long queues, surprise fees. Price is jumping at checkout, and that's why there's game time.
Starting point is 00:10:07 Game time. The game time apps gives fans the advantage with constant innovation, just how you like unlocking amazing tickets and experiences in just a few taps. Super simple to use. The game time guarantee means you get. get 100% authentic tickets delivered on time at the best price. And the best part is fees are included in the price you see. What you see is what you pay, period.
Starting point is 00:10:32 There's also zone deals where if you pick the section you want to sit in, maybe you want to go tarps off and sit in that right field upper bleachers. Maybe you're one of those guys. And then game time chooses the exact seat that you want to sit in. And then you save even more money. It's two taps and it's done. No stress. No hidden fees.
Starting point is 00:10:51 Just great seats. minutes. That's what makes it so easy to decide last minute to hit a game. Take the guesswork out of buying MLB tickets with GameTime. Welcome back, Marron's Postcast, Anderson Hearst with you. The lefties, get it done today. Josh Nader with the Homer, Cole Young with two hits, including the walk-off, and Colt, with the Homer. Those are the only guys that get hits today. All the righties, no go, which I think explains a lot of the Mariners' struggles versus left-handed pitching. But,
Starting point is 00:11:34 hey, when you get a win today, that all kind of goes, you know, in the rearview mirror, right? You do it exactly what you need to do to get it done. We talked about the really good pitching, talked about a couple of the really good at bats earlier in the game. Let's talk about extra innings, though, because let's, you know, Anders Munoz comes in the ninth on a tie game. and you know you he's facing the uh no not the kind of the bottom end of the uh met's order uh nine one and two so you but you know the way the met's move their lineup around soto hits third for them so um you're kind of facing bottom-ish of the order guys um so it's a good spot for munoz i think you know he's talked about how he prefers save situations with his confidence and stuff like that
Starting point is 00:12:25 but I think this was a good spot to use him because you don't want to always just wait until there's a one run lead or something like that. You want to give him a few times where you can kind of attack a little bit, whether that is maybe a three or four run lead, maybe that is a tie game. And so it's still a relatively high leverage situation. But knowing that if something goes wrong, the Mariners can still get the run back, supposedly, in the bottom half of the inning, that's a good positive for Munoz. And he looked great. They talked about his slider command. and I think at first it was a little shaky, but the big thing for me, and I've said this a while with Munoz, I know his slider is probably his best pitch,
Starting point is 00:13:02 but I feel like when he's at his best, he's letting that fastball ride. And it's not just at the top of the zone. He uses the sinker to get into the righties, but the four seamer low so that it tunnels with the slider, so the hitters don't know exactly what's coming, right? because you can kind of see the tunnel it comes in. If it's a high fastball or a low slider, you can pick that up pretty quickly out of the hand.
Starting point is 00:13:27 But the low fastball versus the slider, that is impossible. And if he's dotting that fastball low in the zone, which he was today, that is when he is almost untouchable. So good for him. Then the Mariners get their bottom half of the ninth inning. Devin Williams comes in and he also looks. fantastic for the New York Mets.
Starting point is 00:13:52 His changeup is just nasty. You know, he gets Julio Rodriguez to strike out. Victor Rold was to ground out and Randy Rosarina to strike out. So then you get to the top of the 10th. Tie game, you're going to extras for the third time in four days. The Mets actually, I saw a stat. This is their 12th extra inning game this year. It's the most in the majors and three more than any other team in baseball.
Starting point is 00:14:17 man, I couldn't imagine being a Mets fan going to that many extra innings and then seeing your record. There's a lot of missed opportunities there. Let's just put it that way. But Spire comes in, gets Juan Soto to strike out, and then Mark Vientos comes in who has mashed left-handed pitching, and Spire gets him to strike out, and then you get AJ Ewing to pop out to J.C. The scoreless tent, I think, debatably. I'm going to go two unsunged today. I'm going to go unsung moment was the score. Sorry, unsung hero is Gabe Spire with a scoreless
Starting point is 00:14:53 10th. That is such a huge moment in this game. Having a guy start on second base and blanking them as the home team puts you in such an advantageous spot. So you just need one run in the bottom half. And that's exactly what the Mariners get. And my unsung moment of the game is the steal from Randy a Rose Arena. And, you know, everyone saw the Cole Young, sacrifice bunt yesterday to move the runner over. And then that ended up getting the walk off for the Mariners. But the big thing that I've always said about the sacrifice bunt is you don't need to punt to do that. They talked about it on the broadcast too when wisdom was up. You just need to ground the ball to the right side of the infield and that moves the runner as well. So the other thing you can do
Starting point is 00:15:39 is steal the base. And I think Randy was ultra aggressive there. That's why AJ Minter looked at him twice. They didn't even throw it a second, but he looked at him twice to get him back to second base. And, you know, that steals huge, man, because wisdom strikes out. And yeah, you could mention that because wisdom swings and misses at the pitch, it maybe makes the throw a little bit harder from Luis Torens. But, man, that's all Randy there, man. And that's a huge play in this game because I know Cole Young gets a single and Randy probably scores. But it makes how mentor pitches to Cole Young so differently because he no longer has any room for error. He's thinking to himself, okay, if Randy's on second base with Cole Young,
Starting point is 00:16:24 he has to think to himself that he needs a hit in order to score the run, right? He needs a hit. And even sometimes when you do get the hit, if it's a hard hit, shallow ground ball, they sometimes would hold Randy there. But having Randy on third, it just minimizes your, room for error and it changed the whole up bat and cole young knew exactly what he needed to do put the bat on the ball and that that pitch was way out of the zone too such a good piece of hitting from cole young man like if you look at you know the two big guys that did things offensively at josh nether
Starting point is 00:16:59 as well but col yon and colt emerson this is future mariner talk right here these are two guys that are going to be a part of this team for a long long time so um excellent work from col young there the Mariners win their seventh in a row. Good steal from Randy to get in that position. So good for him for taking advantage and being one of the best, you know, base Steelers in the game in the early part of this season. So Mariners win their seventh in a row, three, two over the Mets when the first game of the series. We'll be back with you guys tomorrow because I feel like the Mariners can get to eight
Starting point is 00:17:31 in a row guys. They're just playing different baseball than they were after that Royal Series just over a week ago. because I don't know, man, they just, they're doing little things right. They're, even if their offense isn't going off every single game, they're finding ways to get runs and their pitching is doing just enough to to hold other teams off the board. You got Logan Gilbert on the mound tomorrow. So hopefully it's another dub.
Starting point is 00:17:57 We'll talk to you guys after that one. Go Mariners, seven in a row. Let's keep it rolling.
