This is the Mariners Postcast.
Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners.
Part of the Locked-on podcast network, your team every day.
The boys are showing some life, guys.
Let's go.
Let's go.
That's what I've been waiting to see.
That is what I've been waiting to see.
Just that's the game that I want to see from the Seattle Mariners.
They win 4 to 2 against the D.
Detroit Tigers, they moved to 56 and 59 on the season.
I mean, yes, the record still doesn't look great,
but that is the type of Mariner baseball that we have been waiting to see.
Good defense.
Randy, making like, what, three good plays in left field today?
Julio with a clutch home run after having being intentionally walked ahead of him.
And then Gabe Spires slash Cal Raleigh,
whoever's decision it was to throw at Glaber Torres.
While, yes, it probably made things more interesting than it needed to with Bizarro being the one negative from tonight.
But I will take that trade off every day of the week because this team really, really needed that.
It feels like they really needed like a jolt.
And we'll get into that whole situation a little bit.
I just want to say quickly before we get going, my five-month-old just went to sleep.
so I'm trying to be excited and pumped and passionate for you guys,
but I also can't wake him up.
I'm going to try not to.
So I apologize.
The volume level may not be to the level that it normally is for me,
but just a fantastic, fantastic day for the Mariners.
And, you know, for how difficult last night was after the trade deadline,
this was equally, if not,
more so it felt real we've had multiple moments this season where um it felt like the mariners could
take that moment and finally break out um it was the dodgers game where they just hit five homers
it was the cow raleigh very similar situation to Julio um uh where don canzone gets
intentionally walked before him and then he hits the grand slam it felt like that was a moment as well
that was a few weeks ago.
I was hesitant to buy in that that was the moment.
I am not anymore.
I think this feels a lot more real tonight for me,
mainly because of the optics of what I saw,
you know, how much energy changed after specific moments.
First, after the Julio home run,
and then number two after the whole Cal Raleigh,
Gabe Spire, Glaver Torres situation.
So this team looked like, hey, they had finally woken up here on August 5th at 9 p.m.
Right.
It shouldn't take that long.
Don't get me wrong.
And it still might be too late based off of everything that's happening ahead of you.
But this finally feels like the moment that this is, it's going to turn into something real.
Hopefully it's enough.
Hopefully they go on some massive run that we're hoping for.
and having Julio do that, and they talked about it on the broadcast today too,
when it's your big guys doing it, it's a totally different feel in the clubhouse.
Like, don't get me wrong, Dom Canzon, Randy Rosalena, and Cole Young,
being very good offensive players for the majority of this year is great,
and you'll take that all day, every day.
But if you were to pick big moments, I would think the team would react to them more
if it's the Cow Raleys, the Julios, the Josh Naylors that are getting those done.
So having Julio be the guy to hit the go-ahead three-run home run after the disrespectful move from AJ Hinch,
pinch,
um,
sorry,
intentionally walking Dom Canzon right ahead of him,
uh,
I think was massive.
Um,
also good on Colt Emerson,
right?
Um,
that's,
that's another feel thing where it's like,
okay,
the boys may have woken up now because right after the whole Cal Raleigh situation and
Dylan Dingler hits the two run homer to make it a one run game and it's like,
uh-oh,
did we just piss it away just to have this.
little revenge moment.
No, because Colt Emerson's like, no, this is our time now.
This is absolutely our time.
And I think they needed that.
Let's start with the start.
Brian Wu, I mean, it's starting to get kind of meme worthy here because this is what he
does at home.
This is what he does at home.
Just seven innings of, he wasn't fantastic today.
Obviously, the results show that he was fantastic.
but there were moments where it was a little questionable.
There was a lot of hard contact.
His defense had to save him, believe it or not,
the defense saved a pitcher.
That's the first time I've ever said that this year.
His defense saved him this year.
Sorry, in this game, especially in that fourth inning,
Randy with a couple fantastic plays,
robbing a homer, throwing a guy out at third base.
And don't forget, I think that was the first or second inning,
that catch kind of down the line up against the wall there.
that's a difficult play.
So good for him as well.
Randy, just a fantastic night.
It goes two for four.
A double, a single, a run scored,
a couple fantastic defensive plays.
He's showing you why he's been your best player
for the entirety of this year.
But back to Wu.
I mean, you could tell the Tigers were aggressive with him.
And this is one of those situations
where if I'm a Tigers fan,
I'm a little frustrated with the approach
because yes, you do want to jump on a guy
that you know is going to throw a lot of fastballs, right?
But at some point you have to adjust in game
based off of what you're seeing
and what results you're getting.
I've seen this far too often with the Mariners
where they try and jump on someone
because they don't feel like they have the stuff
to get it by them.
You're playing right into their hands when you do that, right?
The way you kind of combat those guys
is you be extra patient, wait for them to get into the zone,
hope the borderline pitches go your way
and then you start to battle with two strikes, right?
That's where it's different
versus trying to jump on the first pitch that you see
because you see a fastball.
He's going to throw 70% fastball,
so you're going to see a lot of fastballs.
So it's one of those things where I would be frustrated
with the approach if I was the Tigers,
because we've seen this far too often with the Mariners.
But nevertheless, Brian Wu fantastic,
seven innings, three hits, no runs,
one walk, five case.
It's what he does at home.
it's absolutely what he does at home.
So good to see with him on that one.
Good response game for him after the tough outing in L.A.
Offensively, you had really just a couple good nights.
Randy, Julio, and, you know, I'll throw in, I'll throw in Colt Emerson in there as well.
Brendan Donovan and Taylor Ward. Bottom of the order was good as well.
So yeah, that was good for the boys there.
But it's not like you absolutely just shellac.
This wasn't a Dodgers first game of the Dodgers series game where everyone was kind of hitting the ball.
You needed a couple big moments.
And that's why I think this win feels so much more important because it wasn't of time where the ball was flying out of the park.
And everyone's just having their day at the same time.
You needed someone to step up.
And so often this year in,
in 2026, no one has.
And Randy continues to do what he does, but he's, it feels like he's,
maybe I'm underselling him a little bit, but he's not the guy to really be like,
hey, get on my back.
I'm going to carry us to this win or, or carry us to this stretch.
I'm going to go nuclear for, you know, a three or four week stretch.
He's just Mr. Consistency offensively.
He's going to get on base.
He's going to steal bases.
He's going to hit doubles, a few home runs here and there as well.
well, that's the Randy that we know and love.
And he's been so valuable for them for this because they have no one else that's that consistent this year.
So good for him.
I mean, I'm not underselling him any stretch,
but you need someone to have the big hit, right?
You need someone to.
And it was a ton of times it was Cal last year.
A few times it was Josh Naylor as well.
It hasn't been really anyone.
A few times Dom Canzone this year, but, you know, your big boys have not shown up.
And finally, Julio does.
and I really hope that this is the start of something.
And it feels like it could be, I mean, Julio, two for three, two hits, three RBIs,
including the three-run home run.
It gets a walk in there as well.
Good to see.
Absolutely good to see.
The defense in the outfield was surprising as anything today from not just him,
from Dom Canzon, from Randy Rosarena as well.
So I love to see it.
Taylor Ward gets his first hit as a mariner.
He looked much more composed.
today. Yes, he does strike out, but you could tell his approach at the plate is to he has a long
swing. So he's going to be more selective and he's going to be susceptible to the swing and miss.
It's just because what he has made him successful this year is he's not swinging as often.
He's trying to really pick and choose his moments to. And when he's able to do that and he connects,
he's going to make really good contact. So I hope he continues to do that here. We'll kind of see how
that plays out, but good for him for getting his first hit. Colt Emerson, you know, we talked about
it yesterday. Um, that absolutely, it, it was a pretty underrated moment to kind of get it right back.
After Dylan Dingler hits the home run after the Cal Raleigh, Gabe Spire, Labor Torres situation,
um, there was really a feeling, at least with me wasn't, uh-oh, here we go again.
Did we just, you know, get rid of what could have been and should have been a much needed
win for this team for for revenge purposes um and colt emerson was like no no we're not i'm just
going to get one of those right back and uh you know nothing's happening um on that end of it so um good for
him absolutely needed win for this mariners team so um fantastic uh you know result as well as the
process today for the seattle mariners i hope this means that they're going to wake up and
continue this stretch guys don't let it just be one game and then you know you're just be one game and
you go back to the crap that we've seen far too often this year tomorrow.
Okay.
Make it mean something.
Take it and run with it, right?
Use momentum in this instance.
I know people like to kind of scoff at that notion,
but this team uses it when it's there.
So use it, okay?
Mariners went 4 to 2.
Let's come back.
Let's discuss the Cal Raleigh-Gabre-Gabre's situation.
And then we'll talk Munoz,
because he looked fantastic today.
All coming up here on the Mariners Postcast on Locked on Mariners,
we will be right back.
My name is Anderson Hurst.
We'll be back with a little bit more.
A big thank you to our friends at Amazon for this limited break.
This back-to-school season spend less on your kids with Amazon.
We all know how crazy the back-to-school shopping experience can be.
It starts with a few items on the list.
And suddenly you're shopping for supplies, clothes, lunch gear, tech,
and about 10 other things you didn't see coming.
it adds up fast.
Well, when it's 9 p.m., the night before school starts,
and somebody suddenly remembers they need folders, notebooks, markers,
and apparently 12 other things nobody mentioned until now,
which, by the way, guys, is getting pretty close for those of you,
obviously different schedules and stuff like that,
but it's feeling like it's getting up there.
Nothing gets the heart rate up, quite like emergency school shopping.
I'm convinced Primes delivered tomorrow before 7 a.m. feature was created exclusively
for parents in this moment.
So remember, with Amazon's low back-to-school prices,
just spend less on your kids because every dollar you don't spend on them
is a dollar you haven't spent on them.
So shop back-to-school at Amazon and spend less on your kids.
Welcome back. Anderson-Hurst here, Mariner's Postcast.
I apologize that I'm not as excited and the volume, I should say.
I am excited, but the volume isn't necessarily exuding that excitement.
My five-month-old just went down to sleep.
So I'm trying to keep him asleep.
It's a very important thing in this household right now.
We were just talking back to school.
I'm not there yet, but I'm in the preliminary stages of thinking about that kind of stuff.
But I'm still excited for a mariner victory four to two over the Detroit Tigers.
There were many things in this game that made me happy.
Brian Wu's start was one of them.
Having Julio come up in a big moment was another one.
Having some great defensive plays in the outfield was another one.
and one of the other things was the show of emotion from the guys.
Like, there's been too often in this season,
whether it's a frustrating moment or maybe even a positive moment
where it's a good time to let it out, right?
When you're going through a season where you're underperforming
and things have been pretty frustrating,
and you can feel the pressure from your fans, from your front office,
I'm sure, from the coaching staff, I'm sure.
some emotions okay.
And I realize that baseball tends to almost more than any other sport
trying to shy away from that because it's such a long season
and you don't want to get too high not get too low with these moments.
But sometimes especially when it gets late in the season
and you have these game changing, sometimes season changing moments,
lean into them and make it matter.
Right.
So when Cal Rale gets hit,
I didn't really think much of it in the moment.
moment. But I watched the replay. I forget it was the lefty for the Tigers. I forget his name.
De Jesus, I want to say, yes. So it was like just a kind of a weird instance. It gets hit in his
belly. And Cowrolley's kind of turning to try and turn on the ball a little bit and he
exposes his midsection. But it was pretty far inside. And I didn't see much of it when it first
happened, but Cal apparently took exception to it.
Now, this is the part where I'm a little bit questionable on, and I'd love to be in the press
conference after the game to ask. But then the next half in, and Gabe Spire goes in,
he throws an inside pitch to Glaber Torres, and Glaber Torres is able to get out of the
way. Very next pitch, he throws even more inside, and it hits him.
Obvious intent there. A lot of people are upset about the ejection.
the thing is
it's hard not to eject someone
when the intent is that obvious.
If he had hit Glaver Torres
with his first pitch,
I feel like both teams
would have been issued warnings
and everything could go on their way
at that point.
But because he missed with the first one
and then went back again
for the second one,
the intent is so obvious
that you kind of, like,
I do, like,
there is an element of,
hey, you got our guy,
we got your guy.
even warnings let's move on i get it like that's probably what i still would have done but i can also
see it from the umpire's perspective that hey it's insanely obvious what he was trying to do there we need
like this this needs to be an ejection it is kind of standard for that to happen when it's that
obvious that there was massive intent now the biggest question for me is was that spire's decision
to do that or is that cow calling
after getting hit himself, calling for one of their guys to get hit.
Because that changes thing.
I mean, it doesn't, it's just a different kind of vibe, right?
Is that Cal being like, hey, guys, he got me, let's get after it.
This is a perfect moment to kind of spark the team.
Let's go.
I'm calling an inside pitch.
Or is that Gabe Spire walking up to Cal as they're walking out onto the fields.
Like, hey, he got you.
I'm going after him here.
I don't know.
I honestly don't know.
And then you saw an emotional moment from Dan Wilson.
Yes, you heard me correctly, an emotional.
moment from Dan Wilson.
Now, he didn't really get his money's worth, right?
He came out, looked a little upset.
He gets tossed, and we're done.
But, you know, we're taking baby steps here, guys.
But at the end of the day, you could tell that the guys felt like this was, this was brewing.
This was a needed moment for the team to add some energy, right?
And I'm glad that A, either Cowell or Gabe Spire took that and stopped taking the crap,
from from Detroit in that moment
and B,
Dan kind of backing up his guys.
Look, I would have liked to get to see him
if you're going to get ejected, get more pissed off
and just go berserk.
Yeah, sure, but that's not a style.
But still, that was definitely
a good moment and a good step forward for him
as we've been so critical of his tough one tonight,
lack of emotion.
Yeah, in these kind of parts.
of the season.
So him taking advantage of that and running with it a little bit is a positive.
Now, it does hurt you because you have to bring in Bizarro, who all of a sudden sucks,
by the way, guys.
We're in kind of a really bad situation because we are originally, if everyone's healthy,
you have five guys that you feel good about in higher-ish leverage situations,
that being Munoz, Spire, Ferrer, Bizarardo, and Brash when he's healthy, obviously.
Brash is not healthy.
Then Bizarro being bad, that's down to three.
I'm not putting Sir Anthony Dominguez in that category either.
So right now you have three guys, I would say, that you feel pretty good about in that instance.
And yes, like most teams have probably three.
guys, three high leverage-ish guys.
So it is, I don't want to say, an embarrassment of riches because the bullpen hasn't
necessarily outperformed a bunch of stuff.
But you're dropping like flies at this point.
This was why a lot of other people wanted to go get one more at the deadline.
Didn't even have to be Mason Miller.
It could have been a Luke Weaver sort of situation.
So that's something where to keep an eye on because you really only have one at this point,
right-handed high-leverage arm, and it's your closer who you refuse to bring in before the
ninth inning.
So that is going to be something monitoring moving forward.
Maybe we get more out of Sir Anthony Dominguez.
I know his debut was terrible last night.
But he's kind of susceptible to the beginning,
but then he goes and has a couple really good outings after that.
That's kind of who he is.
Obviously, we need Matt Brash to come back soon
and to be able to rely on that would be huge for this team moving forward.
But Dylan Dingler hits the two-run homer.
and all of a sudden there's an here we go again like did we just screw this up sort of feeling at least with me
and then Colt Emerson comes in and hits a bomb in the bottom half of the inning and kind of puts those to bed
even though it's just one run and you know a four one or sorry a three two game versus a four two game
doesn't make a huge difference especially with you know the the shakiness of the bullpen at times this team has
had this year. I believe it's more of this the feeling like, hey, we're not letting this one
getting away. All right. We're going to have easily our worst hitter who's really struggled this
year. He's going to come out and just attack and hit one out on the second pitch and against a
lefty by the way, Dehusse, the guy who hit Cal Rale. And we're not letting this one get away.
And we're going to take this game and run with it a little bit. Hopefully, hopefully,
that's going to be what ends up happening moving forward.
But we'll see it ends up happening.
It's a big win for the Mariners 4-2 over the Detroit Tigers.
Framber Valdez on the mound tomorrow,
who is another Mariner hater after this situation.
I wouldn't be surprised if we see some fireworks, ladies and gentlemen.
So we should look out for that.
Reminder, no postcast on weekday day games,
just because I'm live on the radio during that time.
So I'm unfortunately unable to go live.
But look out for Ty and Colby's episode.
They will have one dropping right after the game.
It won't be like literally live right after the game like I do,
but they'll do postgame content wrapping up the series
and then looking ahead of this weekend against the raise as well.
So look out for that.
We'll talk to you guys on Friday, 50th anniversary weekend,
between the Mariners and the Rays.
That should be fun.
Should be fun.
Have a good one.
Go Mariners.
You guys are the best.
Talk to on Friday.
