Starting point is 00:00:00 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Oh, boy, did the boys need that one? Oh, boy, did the boys need that one. And a little therapeutic effort from the boys tonight because I think all around the board, you've got performances that kind of ease my nerves a little bit.
Starting point is 00:00:34 The Bryce Miller effort tonight, it was great. I'm not going to say elite, but he was great. This is more like the Bryce Miller that I was looking to see this season. He probably could have gone one more inning too, but we'll talk about that when we get there. Process result, we'll have a lot of those conversations today. But I think the offense looks so much better.
Starting point is 00:00:55 And it's weird to say when you score one more run, and it comes on once again, just like one swing that kind of changes everything. But again, process versus results. that bats looked so much better today than they had the last two days. So that's another big thing. The bullpen was nails, which is great. And then we'll do our unsung hero. But Chris Crawford, you know, this is a game that I think the guys needed.
Starting point is 00:01:18 And as much as it's weird to say when you just salvage a series and don't get swept against a bad guardians team, IMO, they needed this game. You, we talk about needed a lot, right? And a lot of times, you know, there's some subjectivity to how much they have to win a game. I don't think there's any subjectivity to this one that they had to win this baseball game. And it didn't look good for a while. It did not look good. But big moments by Randy, a big moment where you cannot teach speed, Julio Rodriguez,
Starting point is 00:01:55 and really good pitching today. Yeah. And you get a win that you have to have. and it's on a day two where I'm scoreboard watching. I'm watching the Angels currently leading the Astros 2-0 in the top of the 8th. I'm looking at the range or excuse me, the Detroit Tigers leading the Kansas City Royals 4-0-0 in the top of the 8th. Those two teams are the Seattle's Mariners, Nemesis, and then some right now.
Starting point is 00:02:21 So everything is going right for once because these last two days and taking a little bit of a broader picture. The Seattle Mariners outplay the Cleveland Guardians for the overwhelming majority of this series. Now, that only gets you so far. In fact, it doesn't get you very far at all. That's like a wish and you know what in the
Starting point is 00:02:41 hand and see which one fills up first. Out playing a team winning games, which one weighs more, right? But you avoided the disaster that would have been a sweep. You still have a chance to have a really good road trip taking on two teams that I don't think are very good over the
Starting point is 00:02:57 next six. The Guardians are an average baseball team to me. It's not great, but it's not terrible. These next two teams aren't very good and aren't playing for anything. This is big to get that momentum, whether you believe in it or whether you think. I do. With this team specifically. With a rock, or if you believe in momentum is just a rock falling down a hill. This is important. And you have to, have to have to start winning more baseball games. This is a start to that. Yeah. I have, Yeah, I completely agree. And I don't think momentum is the thing for all baseball teams. Some of some teams are just like, yeah, we lost a couple, whatever, we'll be fine.
Starting point is 00:03:36 I think this team ride the highs and lows as much as any baseball team in MLB, to be completely honest. When they're good, they're really good and they look great. And it's like, wow, this team's a contender. When they're not, they're really not. And it seems like everything's kind of falling from the sky. So I think avoiding another like two and seven road trip, I'm not going to say you're going to do that again. No, because there's still an opportunity for you to poop the bed for the rest of this road trip. No question.
Starting point is 00:04:03 But this kind of is like pumping the brakes just a little bit and be like, guys, come on. We're not going to do what we did last time we went on the road. Let's start with the start. Bryce Miller, huge, man. And it's weird because if you were to say the three starters and, you know, Logan, Gilbert, George Kirby and Bryce Miller, they all performed pretty well, I would say overall. George was great. Logan was good and like overall good. But I think in terms of making the pitches when you absolutely needed him to, Bryce Miller having the best one was not something I would have expected to say going into the series. I'd probably go George over Bryce, but that's subjective as heck, you know. But what I was was that was certainly the best we've seen Bryce in a long freaking time. And, you know, not to toot my own horn because, you know,
Starting point is 00:04:53 that could be totally wrong. I did mention those last two starts that there were very encouraging moments for Miller from both of those starts. And I think we saw kind of the rewards for those promises that he showed in the previous two outings. Five innings of four in baseball isn't good enough. But he avoids the beginning of all people, Daniel Flippin Schneman is the guy who gets him in the grand.
Starting point is 00:05:16 And that's what I'm honestly feeling the lowest of lows. The lowest of lows that, oh, my God, they're going to lose because Daniel flipping Schneeman, he's a home run. Dano Schneeman's a valuable baseball player. He gets on base. He can play defense at a few different places. He ain't ding-dong guy, right? He's going to provide
Starting point is 00:05:35 a ton of homers for you. He's an on-base guy who scrappy. But he gets that homer on a bad pitch. And the Seattle Mariners are down to nothing, but I love how Miller looked after that. And before that, too. You know, some hard contact.
Starting point is 00:05:51 And he's not missing at bats that nearly the level he was in 2024. He's not going to. He is clearly your fifth starter. It is not close. I know how bad Castillo has been in these last couple. Take a look at the body of work before that. Logan Gilbert obviously isn't your fifth starter. George Kirby, Bradley. Bryce Miller is your fifth starter. There's no debate about this. If you get results like this from Bryce Miller all year, you're going to take it and then some. I probably would have let him go another inning, but I get that the Seattle, Mariners because, and I'll give credit to Dan Wilson right now. He managed this as a must win game.
Starting point is 00:06:28 He managed this as a game that you absolutely had to win. So he went with Gabe Spire. He went with Matt Brasch. He went with Andres Munoz. And all three of those guys were dominant. Yeah. Back to the Daniel Schneeman thing. That's about as Cleveland Guardians as it gets.
Starting point is 00:06:45 Like just a scrappy guide you've never heard of, but it's somehow really valuable. Yeah. And it's just Jose Ramirez and a bunch. bunch of dudes. Yeah. It's just kind of what happens. It's like Cleveland Guardians random player generator at that point. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:01 Yeah, no, you absolutely needed this from Bryce Miller and you needed this from the Mariners. The offense was good too. Let's get to that in a second. I want to get to our quick, you know, ad reads today because we have a couple. Give some love to our sponsors. Then I want to go through the offense because I think they're the bigger story. I'm not saying that they're the bigger reason why you won today, but it's the bigger like, okay, this is what we need to see from this lineup, especially on the road, which we haven't
Starting point is 00:07:27 lately. So we'll do that right after the break here on the Locked up Mariners Postcast. Hey, Locked on Mariners fans, are you still paying full price for gas? Just pick more or less on two to six player projections. you can turn your takes into real prizes all in less than 60 seconds. It's great for baseball too. It's a fun way to play the over-under game. You think that Luis Castillo's going to strike out more than seven guys. I'm sure that'll be about what the line is.
Starting point is 00:10:07 Make that bet. Or if you're big into the football, you think Sam Donald's going to have a big day against the 49ers. Set that over of two and a half touchdowns or whatever that number will be. It's a really fun way to play. And it is something that I've done for a very long time and enjoyed a lot. check out price picks for sure download the prize picks app today and use code locked on MLB to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup that's code locked on MLB for $50 in lineups
Starting point is 00:10:33 after your first $5 play price picks it's good to be right welcome back to the mariner's postcast Anderson Harris Chris Crawford here with you the Mariners win this one four to two a big big offensive day but important offensive day is kind of what I was going for um you do get it basically in two at-bats, which is weird. But I think up and down the lineup, you and I talked about this right before we went live, you get one more run than you did yesterday. And, you know, you could have,
Starting point is 00:11:08 it was really a close play at first base that could have meant, you know, it's two-two going into extras at this point. But I still think today felt so much better than yesterday in terms of the offensive effort in the last two days, I should say. Because I'm trying to think of someone who had a bad day at the plate today. Maybe you could say Cal Raleigh still gets on base with the walk. Twice. Yeah, twice. You're right. You're right. Two walks. So, I mean, maybe Cole Young still gets that hit, though. I don't know. Like, there was no one who had a terrible day at the plate today.
Starting point is 00:11:43 You had good at bats up and down the lineup. And this is where we talk about process versus result, right? You score one more run. It doesn't seem like that big of a difference, but it looked a lot different today. It did. And, you know, some of that has to do with the fact that Tanner Bybee, who was, looked like he was going to be the ace of that staff, has not been very good this year. But the at bat's just looked better. It was a much more aesthetically pleasing offensive effort, even if the runs weren't necessarily there.
Starting point is 00:12:09 But you get, Cal Raleigh does get on twice, the intentional walk right before Julio's big hit. Josh Naylor lines a single, A, Suarez gets on twice. The only guy who doesn't get on today is Polanco. I guess he'd be the one guy who didn't have the play. After two straight days of homering, he's allowed to do that. Sure, it happens, but it wasn't a great day for him today. Can zone lines the single. The bottom of the order was fantastic today.
Starting point is 00:12:35 And we dunked on, I guess would be the term we could use. I want to use a different word, but apparently I'm not allowed to use it. JP. JP and Cole Young were dreadful yesterday. Treadful baseball players. They were both excellent today. JP gets on twice. Cole Young gets on twice.
Starting point is 00:12:53 Great job by Cole Young on scoring on that play. I mean, I think we can just get into the scoring place now. Randy or Rosarina just slacks that homer after J.P. Crawford, I believe lines a single into left field. That was the one. Yeah, because one of them was a not so hard hit ball. But hey, it's getting on twice. You get on twice. And then Randy just absolutely clobbers that baseball at a time where you really needed it because while the bats look better, the results just weren't there. They just weren't. You're getting shut out. But that one swing of the bat, changes everything. And after that, I kind of knew the Mariners were going to win this game.
Starting point is 00:13:30 It just felt like one that they were going to end up pulling out. I did not feel great before that, but I did feel great after that. So you get that big two-run Homer. And then I believe it's an inning later. Maybe it's two innings later. Yeah. Can I say something on the range real quick before we move to the Julio? Yeah. So for me, I don't know about your take on this. I was thinking about this. the fact that you can combine someone who has decent good contact in Randy Rosalena, really good on base skills, and has the pop. I think take Cal out of it.
Starting point is 00:14:06 He's probably your most complete hitter. Obviously, like, Sands Cal Raleigh. Like, he's just having an insane season. I know Julio is a higher average, but I just think with Randy's on base skills, and they're probably about the same in terms of, like, raw power. maybe Julio has some more, but they're just even now. I just love what I'm seeing from Rosa Rana.
Starting point is 00:14:28 And even when it seems like he hasn't been, you know, nuclear hot, he just so consistent. I think he has like six hits in this series, which is crazy. Yeah, a lot of extra base hits too. Exactly. So, and you can get on, steal some bags too. I love what I'm seeing from Randy, especially in the leadoff spot. I think that's a perfect place for him. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:14:47 What do you think about the most complete hitter besides Cal take? I would still go with Julio just because I think he has so much better of a hit tool. Now, Randy draws more walks. And, you know, there's something to be said for that. And, you know, Julio's had such low lows that I get it if you want to go somewhere else. But here's the thing. This is what I love about what the Seattle Mariners have. As frustrated as I am and as much as I said, hey, I'm not sure how good they are.
Starting point is 00:15:14 They're top five. You can all make an argument in some case, maybe not Suarez, but you could really easily argue, Josh Naler is the most complete hitter on the Seattle Mariners outside of Colorado. 280, 43, 46, 442. You could argue, Julio, a guy who's going to have three straight top 10 MVP finishes is one of your most complete, or the most complete hitters. Obviously, we've talked about Cal. Ae O'Neo Suarez has power like no one else in this league.
Starting point is 00:15:40 And he's walking a lot too recently. He's starting to draw them walks. And then Jorge Polanco is your sixth guy. Like, there's reasons for optimism with this offense. I loved what I saw from the offense today, even if the results weren't quite where we wanted them to be. So it was two innings later. Yes. Let's talk about the Julio play.
Starting point is 00:16:01 Let's go through the whole inning, please. Yes. So it's the top of the seventh inning. You start with the JP, sorry, Dom-Cand-Zone single. Yep. And then J.P. Crawford grounds into a force out. They get the guy at second. So Canzone's out at second, but JP's still on first.
Starting point is 00:16:24 Yes. Cole Young then walks. Huge walk from him, by the way. They bring in Matt Festa to face Randy Rosarena, who grounds out. They don't get the guy at second, which is weird to me. Because I thought they could have maybe gotten the double play there, but they go for just the guy at first. So Randy is out.
Starting point is 00:16:42 So you got second and third for Cal Raleigh. They go 2-0 on Cal Rale, and they just like, we're not touching this guy intentionally walking him. Base is loaded for Julio Rodriguez. And I get it. I'm going to have you speak on this in a second. It's not the best hit ball. No.
Starting point is 00:17:00 But he works a beautiful at bat to get to 3-2. I thought he might have actually been able to draw the walk, but he's still like this is a perfect situation where I think he actually has developed and grown as a hitter. you would like to see more driven baseballs, especially for me, more cold driven baseballs. But when you are able to be in a big spot, bases loaded two outs and just make contact, not strikeout. This is where strikeouts do matter versus non-strikeouts, right? Put the ball in play and then he runs out a very, very close play at first base to score two runs.
Starting point is 00:17:40 by the way, heads-up base running by Cole Young to score the second run on that because there's two outs. You could easily have just kind of mailed it in there thinking it was just going to be an easy ground out. But I honestly didn't think anything of it. I thought it was, I mean, not super softly hit, but it wasn't super hard hit. It was a pretty routine play, and Julio just beats it out. Yeah. So I saw some comments about it where a bunch of you said, I really think he was safe. I wish I agreed.
Starting point is 00:18:08 I'm not sure if he was safe or not. I honestly think it's 50-50, whatever the call was on the field. And that is why the call on the field matters in that situation. And, you know, I think if you watch that 20 more times, you would probably have 10 different opinions. Exactly. Like, it was so close. But the fact that it was even close is so freaking impressive.
Starting point is 00:18:31 Like, that is 10 or 15 players, I would say, you know, just to be safe, can get to that going that quickly. and, you know, I was a little upset at the time because I thought that was ball four that he swung at there. And, you know, that would have given you the lead three to two. But hey, it ended up working out even better. And, you know, just being able to put that ball into play. And after falling back down, oh, two, like the take he had, it wasn't a pitch that was even close, that three, two. We've seen Julio swing at that pitch.
Starting point is 00:19:04 Absolutely. So often. So often on that outside part of the plate where he, just trying to do a little bit too much. But no, he takes that pitch. And I do think he swunk of ball four. But just the fact that there was the process there, the process of laying off those pitches to stay alive,
Starting point is 00:19:23 to fight another day, and to be able to make just enough hard contact and just be an elite athlete on top of it to beat that out and guarantee basically that you were going to win this game. That was a massive, massive moment. And you know what I love to? I haven't talked about this enough. Julio is an infectious baseball player.
Starting point is 00:19:44 And watching that smile after he was called safe is just one of those things where it's like, watch, damn, you are a superstar, dude. Like, you just kind of get it. You just kind of get it. And the joy that he has playing this game, and I know some people get frustrated, like, why are you smiling? You're losing. I hope you never, ever lose that, Julio.
Starting point is 00:20:06 I hope you always have fun playing this. baseball game because it's a game. Yeah, it's a game that's been billions of dollars, but it is a game. And for us, that's what we should care about, right? People enjoying this game, people having fun playing it. We shouldn't give a crap about the financial ramifications or the analytics of what that hit does for his hard hit percentage. No, it should be about enjoying players having fun. And that was a great moment of a player having fun and being pumped up.
Starting point is 00:20:45 There's a lot of things you can criticize Julio Rodriguez for. Being a good teammate, being a good person, and in loving the sport of baseball, are three things that you just flat can't do. Absolutely. I couldn't agree more. I just, you're right about the infectious energy. And you do need some balance. I think this locker has a locker, locker room has some balance.
Starting point is 00:21:06 with that with cow josh nailer kind of more down-to-earth guys pretty quiet go about their business and then you have the hulios the randis the aeanios that are loud big uh uh personalities that kind of keep people going you i always love when uh when hulio kind of cuts off randy in the outfield and makes the catch they have a handshake i love my any celebration when he runs around the bases it's like dang it's so fun uh d colbeck yes you better believe i'm wearing a soccer jersey because goes Sounders today, 5 o'clock kickoff against Inter Miami and the greatest player of all time, Leonel Messi. So hopefully they can beat him. So I'm supporting local. That is why I'm wearing my Sounders jersey. You'll see it too when Cracken season starts. And when the Seahawks season starts,
Starting point is 00:21:54 I like just throwing on jerseys. I have a bunch of them. So yeah, no, I think this was a huge win for the Mariners. Let's talk about the bullpen a little bit. Quickly, quickly talk about the decision to take Bryce Miller out at 72 pitches after six innings looking really good. I tweeted out right as it happened. I probably would have stuck with him. It ended up working out just fine. So this is one of those situations where, you know, you have three guys, really basic. Like, yep, Spire, Tabash, to Munoz, it seems like it's a pretty easy map out.
Starting point is 00:22:22 Is there any question as to what he did, Dan Wilson's decision making here? Nope. I thought it was great. Now, you could have, I wouldn't have criticized. Wilson for giving him another batter or two, like seeing if he could get through those seven innings. He's right. Glory, Glory, Man United.
Starting point is 00:22:41 Come on. Let's go. Glory. I know he's up. Glory is about to be spelled E-I-G-H, I guess, because it's more like glory. Eh. It's, I had no issues with any of the decisions that Dan Wilson made today. I thought, and by the way, Gabe Spire is the guy I trust the most right now in this.
Starting point is 00:23:03 And that's not an insult to anybody else. You know, it's like, yeah, Andres Munoz gave up runs because last time I checked, there has not been a pitcher who's finished with an ERA of 0.00. It happens. He has struggled his way over the last couple of games to a gosh damn 1.69 ERA, right? People give up runs. Matt Brash was fantastic today. It was interesting to see the velocity a little down.
Starting point is 00:23:28 He was a lot of 96. So that was something, but he commanded the fastball really well. well and through a couple of filthy secondary pitches as well. The bullpen was outstanding today. I had no issues with what Dan Wilson did. And you should have all three of those guys available for tomorrow as well. All three of those guys should be ready to roll. That's two straight days for Spire though, I think.
Starting point is 00:23:53 Two straight. That would be three straight days. You know what, though? September freaking first, it's time for him to start being able to pitch in three games. Maybe you have to sit him down for a couple, you know? maybe you're considering calling up sauce for when rosters expand to add another lefty to the bullpen. That would be my guess is what they do is really curious to see who that outfielder or who that other player is going to be, excuse me, because it could be a lot of different guys.
Starting point is 00:24:19 Who would you call up, by the way, real quick? Ooh, I probably would do sauce just to have a lefty, especially in like lower leverage situations. But I could see this is just pitchers. I'm assuming you're asking, right? Yeah, you can only bring up one pitcher. because you've already got 13 and you're only allowed to carry 14. So you can bring up one hitter and one pitcher. I don't know who the hitter is.
Starting point is 00:24:41 I don't. There's a few guys you can go with. I'd probably do saucer pitcher. That's a pretty easy one. Someone who's been here. I don't even think anyone else has been up. That's down on AAA right now. But in terms of hitters, it's between Leo Rivas and Harry Ford.
Starting point is 00:25:00 I don't know, but I don't know between those two. like dr boney yeah yeah that's that's true i don't know i don't know i honestly don't know i obviously you're looking at upside of harry ford and uh to give you know cal some days off from catching um which i think you need at the end of the regular season so that he can catch every game in the postseason obviously and then just to kind of see what you got but uh we're not in a see what you got kind of mode we're in a win now mode so we'll see we'll kind of see what the mentality is from jerry a photo. All right. Any other, who's your unsung today? I'll go with J.P. Crawford. J.P. Crawford, just having so much success when he's been so bad and
Starting point is 00:25:46 so criticized, like, it's great to see him just contribute, so I'll go with unsung. It sounds patronizing, but it is what it is. I'm going to go unsung moment, and it's going to be Cal Raleigh getting picked off right after the Julio play. That was a tough watch. I understand, like, And more just to talk about what the Mariners are doing at this point. You see it with Josh Naler. You've seen it with Julio. You've seen it with Randy. They're extra aggressive in taking leads on base paths, which I like.
Starting point is 00:26:14 I think that's a good thing. You need to try and get into scoring position as much as possible, right? Now, everyone can talk about their average with RISP, and it's not great. It's probably average or just below average. But I love the aggressiveness that Eric Young Jr.'s bring. bringing to the guy on first base. And I know that was on second base, but it's kind of a, and it doesn't matter who you are. And you don't have to be a fast guy to do this.
Starting point is 00:26:41 It's like, hey, no, we're going to take the extra bag when it's there. And just try and take advantage of pitchers where we know we can time up. And you're going to get caught every once in a while. So I'm not even saying on some villain moment. I'm just saying that's, I'm just going to, I just wanted to mention that real quick. Because people have mentioned it about Julio before, too. It's not just him. This is a coaching staff mentality of the team sort of thing.
Starting point is 00:27:01 It's not a player's decision. It was also a terrific move. Like you give credit there. That was a one of the facts. And they almost got Naylor doing the exact same thing in inning later. Like there are the guardians are good at that. The guardians are very good at holding runners. Bo Naylor, one of the better defensive catchers helps as well.
Starting point is 00:27:18 But yeah, you know, thankfully that run didn't end up being a huge one because I believe Nailer singles the very next inning after he's picked off to end that inning. But yeah, they're going to be aggressive and take the bitter with the better. There's going to be bitter with the better. I'm looking right now in tomorrow a 435 game against the raise. I believe it's Luis Castile on the mound tomorrow. Jane Boz. Shane Baiz.
Starting point is 00:27:46 So we'll talk to you guys then right after the game at 435 against Tampa. Let's hope the Mariners can begin a series by winning a game. I think that sets the tone, especially on the road when you do that. So we'll talk to you guys then. Really appreciate you. Any last words, Chris Crawford. Royals lost. Angels winning 3-0 at the end of eight.
Starting point is 00:28:08 Let's go. Like the video, please. I know that wasn't last words, but yeah.
