This is the Mariners Postcast.
Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners.
Part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day.
They better win tomorrow.
They better win tomorrow.
It's all I'm going to say.
Yeah.
Mariners secure the series loss against Cleveland, a team that you should be beating.
You have a better lineup.
I think the starting pitching advantage.
but their lineup outperformed yours and their starting pitcher outperformed yours today.
It's kind of that simple.
Merritt's postcast here, Anderson Hertz, Chris Crawford with you.
Thank you so much, Chris, for peeling in for me yesterday.
I'm feeling in.
Just going solo yesterday.
I'm sorry I left you that game.
That is my bad.
And the Merrittor's bet for being that.
But I'm starting to get some worries about this team's performance on the
road because they look like a different team at home versus on the road and I know there's been
some kind of splits and everything and it's weird because you think of team mobile park is this
off or this pitchers paradise and it's the offense that seems to have a much better time
at team mobile park versus versus on the road but uh I don't know they they lose this one four to
three um make somewhat of a comeback effort but
fall just short. What are your initial thoughts on today's game? So I'll just give you my unsung
villain right now. I'll probably come up with an unsung hero at some point. My unsung villain is
Julio Rodriguez. And the reason is because without that Homer, I would just talk about how
freaking pathetic this offense is. And it could just be everybody. But now there's one guy who was
competent. So I have to talk about that. This offense sucks. It was absolute dog turds for
since from the first inning to the eighth inning of the last two games.
Just absolute crap.
Logan Everett.
That's like a combination of Evans and Gilbert.
You should have heard me trying to do ad reads yesterday, by the way,
while I was just fuming from this stupid baseball game.
That's why I'm upset with you, Andrews,
is because I had to do those by myself, and I was just red, just fuming.
Yep.
The day doesn't have me fuming, but I'm annoyed at how bad this team looks.
right now. I'm annoyed that really, even that four and two stretch at home, it never gave me that
outside of the win on Sunday, right? Like that was the one game that kind of made me go,
okay, you know, we're a little bit back. By the way, I'm watching Kansas City and Detroit play
right now. Kansas City about to get the win. This sucks. This baseball team right now is
playing really bad baseball. Yeah, yeah. I could not have said it better myself.
I want to do a little exercise.
Two things.
Number one, after we start with the start here in just a second,
I'm going to ask you what you're more worried about,
offense or what you're more worried about,
or sorry, what your worry meter is at this point in the year
in terms of making the playoffs.
But let's start with the start.
Logan Gilbert, what do you think?
I thought he was pretty good today.
Now, six innings of, if we're talking process and result,
the result of six innings of three-run baseball because of the expectations we have for Logan Gilbert isn't
good enough. I thought he looked good doing it. There was a moment in the, I think it was the fourth
inning to the fifth inning where Jose Ramirez gets on on like a eight-foot single, just a little
dinker dunker, and then he advances to second on a wild pitch, and he does end up scoring the run on
the one, one of two solidly hit balls against Gilbert all day. And then the Mariners follow,
with Josh Naylor hitting a line drive and Stephen Kwan turning into gosh damn Superman and not scoring the run because of that.
And that's when I remembered, oh, right, this team's cursed.
Like there's no point in doing any of this.
It's nice to have some record in the history books of why this team will never do anything,
but they're never going to do anything because they're cursed.
And I don't know how to break the curse.
I've talked to everyone.
I have sacrificed everything.
And it just keeps coming back incorrect answer.
It's like doing the contra code for those you old enough to remember, up down, up, down, left, right, left, right, AB start.
No idea.
To get ultimate lives.
It's a really good, really good Nintendo game.
I can't find it.
I can't find that code for the Seattle Mariners.
Back to Logan Gilbert.
Even the home run wasn't that bad of a pitch.
It was a pitch down at nut and low.
And Kyle Monsardo, and of course, on a Saturday, Washington State is going to be one of the teams that I hate my life.
I just hate it.
I hate it.
And, you know, it wasn't even a bad pitch.
But the issue is, for me, why does that runner get to second base on the first run this course?
It's because of a wild pitch.
Why is that inning still going?
It's because of a walk.
Self-inflicted damage.
The Mariners have had so much self-inflicted damage and just moving to the bullpen.
Yeah.
Why does that run score?
Because of a walk from Caleb Ferguson.
Self-inflicted.
damage the guardians have not beat the seattle mariners not even close the seattle mariners have beat
themselves i completely agree uh and i totally forgot about the walk to i don't even know if
their nine hole hitter is but the walk to get to quaint uh at that point so you just can't do that
you can't not you cannot do that um yeah it's uh hoolio does make it look better offensively
and like we know that's what this offense is it's it's home runner bust uh they hit two homers today
one from Jorge Polanco for his second in a row,
one from Julio Rodriguez.
That's how you get all three-year runs.
You probably shouldn't expect to win a game by scoring three runs.
I don't know.
I'm having a tough time explaining why this team finds ways to lose games on the road
and finds ways to win games at home.
I don't know.
I honestly don't know.
I have no idea.
I think I can answer it a little bit, though, Anders.
You know why they're winning a lot of games at home?
because they're playing crappy baseball teams outside of the Padres.
They're beating up on hot garbage.
I don't think Cleveland's any good.
I don't think Cleveland's any good either.
I don't think, I don't know if the Seattle Mariners are all that good either.
I thought the Seattle Mariners were good.
I did everything that I have seen since the series against the Mets,
a little bit the Orioles, but really against the Mets,
has suggested to me that the Mariners just might not be all that good.
it may not be all that great of a baseball team.
They're improved.
They have a very nice core.
They have a depth of starting pitching.
A lot of teams would be jealous of.
But are they that good?
You can't be 72 and 64 and say,
oh, the Seattle Mariners are great.
You certainly can't say that.
I think the Seattle Mariners are just a team
that's going to beat the crap out of crap.
And hopefully they can hold their own.
But if you're going to get to the postseason
and if you have aspirations of doing more,
nothing I've seen from this team suggests that they're ready.
Nothing since that nine-game winning streak
and now looking at it,
there was some smoke and gosh-dam-merews.
Tampa Bay sucks.
The White Sox shouldn't exist.
Texas cannot beat the Seattle Mariners.
This is not a great baseball team.
No.
I, and they're not specifically right now.
And I totally agree with you.
When you look at the record,
like I think everyone's sort of projecting, okay, you know, you look at their lineup,
you look at, you look at their, you know, their bullpins a little short, I'd say,
but it's not like a necessarily one of the worst in the AL by any stretch of the imagination.
Agreed. Starting pitching is good. Maybe don't have a top end starter, but you're still
have really good depth. I agree with you on that. But they find ways to lose baseball games.
So what is it then? Why?
And you know what?
Yesterday I threw a big tissy fit about Dan Wilson and some terrible decisions
and him not giving a crap about the baseball team or not enough.
It's not Dan Wilson today.
I have no issue with any decision Dan Wilson made today.
A lot of people were talking about going to Spire instead of Ferguson.
No, absolutely not.
You need Spire to face those big boy lefties,
which he did and handled them with a plum, right?
If Gabe Spire was capable of going multiple innings,
but dude wasn't available.
So he clearly isn't going to go multiple innings, right?
So I have no issues with anything Dan Wilson did today.
The Seattle Mariners just weren't a good enough baseball team.
Yeah, yeah, completely agree.
So we talked about some Logan Gilbert.
I mean, I'll just say this.
Like, it's the same story with him.
Like he looks elites, like one of the best starting pitchers in baseball for nine-tenths of his starts.
and then just one bad pitch at a terrible time,
and it always gets punished, it seems like.
And I like what you said about the self-inflicted
because the wild pitch is why Jose Ramirez scores that run
because if he doesn't have the wild pitch,
he doesn't advance to second base on the flyout,
and then he doesn't score on the single.
So that's why they score the first run.
Yeah.
And then the home run to Mancardo.
Like that's kind of the only bad thing he did.
I guess walking Ramirez originally, but that's three mistakes.
I think starting pitcher should be able to make three mistakes and be okay.
You should.
Logan Gilbert was not at his best.
Logan Gilbert didn't come close to matching what he did Sunday.
That's not even close to damning with faint praise.
It is the exact opposite.
Logan Gilbert was as good as any Seattle Mariner starting pitcher we've seen in a long time on Sunday.
Logan Gilbert certainly pitched well enough.
win. Certainly pitched well enough to win. Unfortunately, and we'll talk about it in the second half,
yeah, the Seattle Mariner offense was abysmal minus two freaking swings. Yeah, I'll go three,
three freaking swings. Okay. Yeah, let's talk about it on the other side of the break here on the

Welcome back to the Mariners Postcast, Anderson Hurts, Chris Crawford with you.
We're trying to make sense of a Mariners loss.
Four to three against the Cleveland Guardians to lose the series.
Hopefully they can avoid the sweep tomorrow.
But yeah, just lots of bad across the board.
You get a couple good swings offensively.
and you get a couple bad pitches from Logan Gilbert,
and that is the recipe for success, honestly.
It's pretty crazy.
Sorry, for failure, I should say.
But let's go through the offense here,
because if you look at it just without zooming in,
you see three runs.
All right, not awful.
They weren't great, but it wasn't awful.
Three runs, you expect a little bit more, probably.
Your top of the order,
two of your first three hitters have two hits each.
And then nothing else after that besides Jorge Polanco, literally nothing else.
So you're looking at three hitters that did three hiters got a hit today, period.
That's pretty wild.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And, you know, Gavin Williams is a guy who could be kind of tough because he is very similar.
He's not as good as Brian Wu or even as good as a Bryce Miller when Bryce Miller's at his best to me.
But he's kind of similar in that they are guys who generate lots of spin.
and it makes the fastball tough, and it makes you say, oh, why are they not hitting pitches
down the middle of the plate?
But they missed a lot of pitches in the middle of the plate today and swung through a lot
of pitches in the middle of the plate.
It's really frustrating to see Big Dumpers game after I thought he played such a good
game yesterday.
He stayed within himself.
He draws those three walks, and you're thinking, all right, he struggled today.
He really struggled today.
I see a bunch of people suggesting moving him out of the two holes.
Stop it.
Just stop.
Number one, it's not going to happen.
happen, but, you know, if you need something to complain about, I respectfully disagree that
that's why Cal Raleigh struggled today.
Luke Raleigh is hot garbage.
I don't think you could overstate how terrible at baseball Luke Raleigh was today.
That at bat to end the game was Chef's Kiss perfect, because as mad as I was at Julio for
hitting the Homer and being like, hey, you're not representing.
Oh, thank you, Luke.
that's a perfect representation of the god-awful baseball game that you played today.
It was atrocious.
I never thought ever, ever, ever, ever, even when they made the trade.
I never thought I would say, boy, this team sure needs Dom Kanzone to be healthy.
Because Dom Kanzone is a substantially better offensive player than Luke Raleigh at this point.
And, you know, he was our unsung hero a couple days ago.
He had the big double and he made a,
hit a ball hard.
He's not good.
He's just not good.
And the fact that he's worthless against left-handed pitching doesn't add to,
by the way,
what's going?
Here's my one issue with Wilson and whether this is Wilson or DePoto or Hollander or Dave Cameron
or New York Vinny or whoever sets the lineup for the Seattle Mariners.
Why is Dom Kanzone in the lineup against the lefty and then sitting a day later?
Why?
Explain that one to me.
Because I guess because now that you don't have Robles for seven games,
you're like, okay,
San Zones are guy versus lefties and Luke's are guy versus righties.
I'm not saying I agree with it, but that's what it screams to me.
Yeah, it must be because, and if that's true, it needs to change immediately.
Because, I mean, Luke really was awful.
I know J.P. Crawford draws a walk.
I can't stand watching J.P. Crawford hit right now.
He sucks.
It's so hard.
He's been awful yesterday.
Rocious. Yeah. Hey, Johanio Suarez has really picked things up lately. Today was not a good example of that. Not even a little bit. Um, on the positive side, I loved what Julio did today. Like, yeah, he grounds out a couple of times, but they're grounders up the middle, right? Like it's not hard contact, but a decent little contact. It shows that he's seeing the baseball well. And then he pisses on a single to center field. That play by Kwan on the ball hit by Naler is one of the best defensive plays I've seen this year. And is the, the,
unsung moment because you're feeling so much better in a one-one game like because
Julio scores on that place super easily.
Easily.
Yeah.
Like Juan.
But that's a huge moment in this game.
But I really like what I saw from Julio Rodriguez today.
And great to see Polo hit a homer again, you know, like.
I think Randy did.
Go ahead.
Randy, it's fine.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Two hits at the top.
The order will take that.
Yeah.
We'll take it.
Yeah.
Absolutely.
And, you know, I'm still annoyed by whatever the heck it was.
that happened yesterday, and that's not on Randy.
I'll tell you that much.
That's not on Randy, but there were three guys today who played fine baseball games.
The other six, and I know Cole Young draws a walk.
I know that JP drew a walk.
It ain't good enough.
By the way, Cole Young's on base percentage.
It's down to 317.
Presented without context.
Yeah, for those who wanted to lead off with Cole Young,
let's hold off on that for about now.
You ain't ready.
No.
You ain't ready.
What was I going to ask?
I was going to ask something.
I was extremely happy that Florida State beat Alabama.
I think that's what you were going to ask.
And yes, it was very awesome to see.
I will be rooting against Kailen DeBore for my entire life.
I was happy to see the Oregon Duck get decapitated before the game.
That was one of my favorite moments of the college football year already.
I was happy to see Steve Garcia-Sarkeesian lose his first game of the year.
I will root against that guy for my entire life.
Those are the only good moments of my day, literally, the only good moments of my day.
Unsung villain for me is John Swaltz because he is boring as hell.
Oh, my God.
Oh, give Anguementic a raise just off of that.
Like, sometimes you don't know how bad it is until you have to listen to that guy hate baseball.
He hates baseball.
So bad.
And listening to that inning with Brian Hamilton, who I know Cleveland Guardians fans love.
No.
No.
That was hard.
That was hard today.
And I had to have the volume on because,
for those of you don't know,
I work one to nine for NBC,
so I am covering a ton of stuff,
if there's like any type of injuries or stuff like that.
So I'm paying attention a little bit based on what's happening voice-wise.
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
Goldie, you deserve so much better.
I totally agree.
Completely, completely agree.
That's why he's not unsung villain,
because the fact that that guy calls World Series games,
anywho,
this is what I'm frustrated with.
He is a genius at breaking down pitching.
He is one of the smartest people ever.
But as soon as he talks about anything else,
it becomes,
it's like when you're having a conversation with somebody who you don't agree with politically after they get drunk,
but you really like everything they say, but then they have to start talking about their politics,
and you want to go anywhere else and you want to abandon that friend so badly.
That is John Smoltz, genius in talking about pitching.
Everything else is 10 pounds of crap in the proverbial five pounds.
Yes, I heard one of them tonight.
Let's go.
That's my highlight of my day.
Let's go, Chris.
You heard one of them today.
Yeah, I did.
Two of them.
Let's go.
Okay.
Worry meter right now, before we get out of here.
Seven.
Seven.
Yeah.
Part of it is recency bias.
I just watched Kansas City win a game.
Bobby Wood Jr.
with a massive home run today.
What is it?
Two games now, I believe.
And you got to play Kansas City.
And Kansas City plays you awfully tough.
So, yeah,
I'm at seven.
I probably should be higher.
Really?
Yeah.
I'm surprised.
I'm going to go like six.
This is in terms of like, they're not, they're not a contender, so to speak, right now.
I still think they're in good spot to go to the playoffs.
I'm still saying like a five or six in terms of that.
What's your division where you want number?
Because for me, that's at about a nine.
Seven or eight.
Yeah.
I mean, the Astros are losing now, too.
They're not playing good either, though.
No, this division's a pillow fight.
It's so bad.
It's just the AFC South right now of divisions right now.
It's just really, really bad.
Every other division, like, I guess outside of the AL Central,
and that's all due respect to the Tigers who have had a really good season,
you think, oh, that's a team that can win the World Series.
Not the AL West, not based on what I've seen in the year of our Lord 2020.
Well, hopefully the, man, now that you say that, we're playing an ALE Central team.
It's just, it's just boring city.
Oh, my God.
Let's hope they avoid the sweep tomorrow.
Apologies for anyone who noticed my voice is a little raspy.
I went to a concert last night and screamed my face off, so that was fun.
But I appreciate Chris filling in for me.
He did an awesome job.
And I'm so glad I didn't have to talk about that game.
And I apologize for yelling as much as I do.
because I was apoplectic.
That's the worst loss of the year.
As bad as one of those losses to the twins was,
as bad as a few other ones were.
That in terms of process and result was the worst loss of the East year.
And unfortunately, I thought, hey, you're going to follow it up with a big W today.
And nope, they sure as heck did not.
They did not.
Marign was losing this one, four to three.
You've been listening to Mariners Postcast.
Please like the video if you haven't already.
Anderson Hurst, Chris Crawford with you.
We go live right after every single Mariners baseball game.
Good ones and bad ones.
There have been some good ones this year.
There have also been some bad ones, especially recently.
Hopefully they can turn around and avoid the sweep tomorrow because, God, if these guys get swept.
That's not looking good for tomorrow.
I am ready to get yelled at tomorrow if that's what happens.
So let's do it.
I think it's another night game tomorrow.
No, I remember.
Tomorrow is 10.40 a.m.
Ah, okay.
I have the wrong thing.
So 10.40 a.m. first pitch, we'll be with you guys right after the game. Thanks so much for listening.
