This is the Mariners Postcast.
Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners.
Part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Well, the windy city lived up to its name today.
Yeah, a little bit.
This is your marriage postcast.
My name's Anderson Hurst.
That's Christopher Crawford right to my left.
We go live right after every single Mariners baseball game.
I don't know if you can qualify this as a baseball game.
be honest, because I don't understand what's going on. And now I realize I forgot to swap our background.
Whoops, that's my bad going a little haywire here. It kind of works. There were a lot of mistakes made by a lot of people today.
So what? We can just take Kirby and put Hancock and we can still thank God for Cal Raleigh. It works perfectly fine.
It didn't make much difference in the overall, like, realm of the result.
But, you know, he still hits his 30th before the All-Star break.
Yeah.
It's only June 21st.
So he has some possibility for a special, special year, which he's having.
But before that, he wasn't very good.
So it's pretty crazy.
The offense overall, not bad, but it's hard to really know how much of it was good offense
versus, like, the wind helping them out in a lot of situations.
Yeah.
And then I'm going to ask the same about.
Emerson Hancock because I don't want to say that he was awful today because of the conditions
he was playing in, but he wasn't good by any stretch of the imagination. So Chris Crawford,
what are your original thoughts for this one? The first thing on my mind that we just got to talk
about is that I really hope Trent Thornton and the home plate umpire from today's game are okay.
So for those who missed it,
Trent Thornton had one of the scariest moments I've seen as a Seattle Mariner fan.
The moment that he started collapsing,
and I do mean he was collapsing,
I was incredibly nervous.
And I'm going to get an unsung villain out of the way real quick.
Who the heck said it was a good idea for the Mariners to wear their dark jerseys today?
On a day that was 91 degrees and that hot,
holy crap on a cracker that stupid.
And you know what? Usually the home pitcher, the pitcher gets to decide which jerseys you're wearing.
Emerson Hancock, you got to think about that, man. You're from Georgia, too. You know what he can do.
Oh, that was a dumb decision. That's such a dumb decision. You got to wear the lights. You got to wear something that is much more comfortable than those dark uniforms.
But just not joking aside, but like all seriousness, I hope both are okay because that was really nervous.
this was a stupid baseball game, like just a really stupid baseball game.
That was also kind of encouraging, like the fact that they went down 9-1 and kind of, really,
not just kind of, they put themselves back into this game.
And I was impressed by that.
That was the most Scott Servic game, I think we've seen from the Seattle Mariners,
that they kept fighting.
They kept fighting.
They got back into this game.
They also put themselves into a big old hole.
and there were some moments that really frustrated me as well.
But I'm oddly encouraged by what I saw from the offense today
and what I saw from the bull pit as well.
But mainly, Trent, I hope you're okay, buddy.
And throwing 51 pitches is maybe not the most cooth thing to do for a reliever in this heat.
So when you said unsung villain, I thought you're going to go Dan Wilson
for three innings right after an appendectomy in that heat.
What in the name of, I thought he was feeling terrible about himself?
as he's walking him back to the clubhouse like, man, I just screwed up.
So, yeah, I don't know.
That's a great point.
There's a lot of things to go with that.
But let's start with the start.
Emerson Hancock, it's hard to know how much was really him not being good today
and how much was like, okay, there's some conditions that contribute to way more offense
than we're normally used to seeing.
I tended to think most of it was him being bad today.
There was a couple instances where it's like, okay, like that wouldn't have been a home run or okay, that normally doesn't drop.
But it's the walks, man.
If you're going to be a pitch to contact pitcher, you can't walk people.
You just can't.
And that's when you do get those home runs that are bloopy, that's going to hurt you even more at that point.
So that's kind of my first take.
What did you think about, Emerson Hancock?
Yeah.
I don't think it was as bad as the line indicates, but that doesn't mean it was good, right?
That doesn't mean it was anywhere close to good.
And you put yourself in such a hole.
And here's the problem with Emerson Hancock.
And by the way, Emerson Hancock's not losing his rotation spot.
This was one bad start in crazy conditions.
But this is the problem, right?
We see that the floor here is pretty darn low.
There is a pretty darn low floor that doesn't come with a super high ceiling.
Now, there are more than more often than not Emerson Hancock gets the job done.
But there are games where he like literally, when you fall down nine to one,
your chances of winning are few and far between.
That is the understatement of understatements.
And there aren't a lot of pitchers on the Mariners who have that ability to put you down nine to one, right?
That's the biggest concern for me is that, and you know, the stuff looked okay.
The command was terrible.
It was terrible.
Just too much middle, middle, and then too much middle, that middle.
He didn't have a real idea of where anything was going to be located today.
That was disappointing because I thought after Hancock pitched such a solid game in his last
outing, it was like, okay, this will be interesting.
Hancock versus Horton, a couple of high draft picks facing off.
Neither one was very good.
So, but Emerson, yeah, we're talking about Emerson, Hancock.
I don't know why I thought, well, that's wrong.
No, Emerson Hancock wasn't good enough today.
And he hurt the Seattle Mariners a heck of a lot more than he helped.
Obvious point is obvious.
But I do think that he looked okay towards the end of it.
Like that three run Homer, I think was a little wind assisted in the third inning.
And I was glad that he was able to get through the fourth, 94 pitches, by the way.
So it was a weird day because Aaron Goldsmith said it wasn't a long day.
Oh, it was a long day.
It just wasn't very many innings for somebody that we need to start seeing go five or six more often.
Yeah.
And it's weird.
Like I said the walks, I hadn't even looked at his line.
He only had three.
Three is not great, but it's not like, it felt like it was way worse than that.
Three over four innings isn't good enough, man.
Yeah, plus it just felt like he was in three ball counts.
A lot of times.
Way too often.
They fell behind far too often today.
And I can't blame on Piring.
This was not a case of where, like, you're saying like, oh, there were some bad calls
after the most, especially after the second base on Pyr and took over behind O'Play.
There were some real bad calls on both sides.
but this was just Emerson Hancock just not having it on a day against a good lineup in a horrible place to pitch when the conditions are like this.
If you don't have it, you can get shellacked and oh boy, he was Molly Wopped, Pat and Petting.
Patent pending, indeed.
Let's get to the offense because there were some encouraging signs.
You get multi-hits day from JP from Jorge Polanco from Luke Rayleigh from Donovan Solano again.
Yeah.
And then Cal Rale, of course, hits the home run.
what did you see from the offense today?
I thought it was a really good offensive day.
I think everybody outside of maybe Cole Young had some good moments today.
Randy gets the hit and scores the run.
That rundown that he had was pretty impressive too, I have to say.
Like he was sticking in that thing for a long time.
Awesome to see Julio finally get an extra base hit and draw walk.
Two things that we have complained an awful lot about is that he's not walking and he's not getting extra base hits.
He gets both.
also had a line drive that Tansby Swanson played a horrible defensive game yesterday and said,
oh, I heard you, Chris Crawford. I'm going to go ahead and make up for that. We're good friends.
We talk all the time. I've never met him in my life. His sister is a really good soccer player.
I thought the offense was actually. Sister, you mean his wife? Oh, yeah, his wife. Sorry, sorry.
He's not that southern. He's not that southern. Oh, boy. But you get 14 hits today.
You get the homer from Big Dumper, the most wind-assisted homer that I think I've seen in quite some time, but I don't care.
Getting 30 home runs before the end of June, well before the end of June is such a remarkable feat.
And he deserves some of this, right?
Like when you hit as many home runs as you do, you deserve a little bit of good luck.
And he got the barrel on it, just enough.
And the ball went out.
And it was great to see the rest of the game for Cal,
Raleigh was pretty rough. Pretty, pretty rough. In the second half of our show, I want to talk about
the sixth inning in particular because that to me is the biggest time, our biggest moments of the game.
Yeah, I'll push back a little bit on the Julio driven ball. It was a pop fly to the center fielder that he
lost to win. So I'm not going to like give him too much credit for that in almost any other
condition. That's an easy out. And he has zero hits today with a walk. So. Anders, the double was
101.1.1 miles per hour off the bat. I'm not, I'm not, I'm not giving you that one man. That's
Dude, did you watch what happened?
He's, like, standing there and then, like, wait a second.
No, I'm not saying that it was well judged, but it was well struck.
Like, the result was at least somewhat deserved.
The center fielder did.
By the way, Pete Crow Armstrong may not be that good.
Like, I think we ruined Pete Crow Armstrong defensively.
Like, he has had some real mistake.
101 mile per hour double off the bat.
I'm not going there.
All right.
Well, I still have yet to see it from Lulia.
I'll put it that way.
Fair enough.
Totally fair enough.
Totally fair enough.
He's had his, what, second extra base hit in June or something like that?
Third, he had two doubles against Arizona and then he hasn't had anything else whatsoever.
I was more encouraged by the walk than anything else, to be honest with you.
Yeah, I'm good with that.
I'll meet you halfway on that one.
Yeah, there we go.
Yeah, let's give some law to our sponsors.
And we'll start with some fan duel.
Okay.
Ah, the NBA playoffs are in full swing and almost full end.
as every night delivers highlight worthy performances, major momentum shifts, and can't miss moments.
Whether it's a game-winning shot or a breakup player, there's never been a better time to get in on the action.
Fanduil makes it easy to stay in the game before tip off and live with player props, performance trends, and same game parlays.
Fans have more ways than ever to play smart and win big.
Guys, we know the baseball season is kind of a laborious one.
That's why Fandu's so great.
Like, it gives you more reason to pay attention to these doldrums.
Like the Colorado Rockies, you can actually pay attention to a Colorado Rockies game because you have a chance to make some financial decisions with it.
It's something that you can't say about a lot of other sports and it's so much easier because of Fanduel.
If you're new to Fandul, it's the perfect time to sign up.
Head to Fandul.com and place your first $5 bet.
If it wins, you'll get $200 in bonus bets.
Make every moment more with Fandual, the official sports betting partner of the NBA.
A. And hopefully you win some money with that Fandul, because then you can spend some on some
wonderful pistachios. If you're looking for a snack that's both delicious and nutritious,
crack into a good source of protein with wonderful pistachios.
Wonderful pistachios is one of the highest protein nuts. Each one out serving has six grams
of protein, giving you over 10% of your daily value. Plus, they're packed with fiber and better
for you unsaturated fats to help you feeling fuller, longer. That's what I love.
Like I can just snack on some pistachios and know that like I'm not going to get a craving to eat something else.
I'm not going to have to go look in the cookie jar, not going to go open up the top ramen.
Even though I've had two other meals already.
I don't need to do that because I've been snacking all day on wonderful pistachios.
Yep.
Get snacking and get cracking with a snack that packs a protein punch.
Visit wonderful pistachios.com to learn more.
Okay, dokey.
Let's get into that sixth inning that you were talking about.
Let me just go through the sequence here.
I thought you were going to go second inning, I believe,
because that's when they had the first and second and nobody out.
Or second and third, nobody out.
They get one run from it, but not anything more than that after a cool young double play.
But let's go to that sixth inning just to make sure.
Okay, yes, okay.
That's right after the umpire change, by the way.
Yeah.
Ben Williamson singles, J.K. Crawford, singles,
Julio Rodriguez strikes out, Calioli strikes out, and Jorge Polanco strikes out.
So what did you see in that sequence?
Bad.
And it was just so frustrating because Drew Pomerantz has been one of the better relievers in baseball.
And to get him on the ropes, you know, you get the hits off of him to score the couple of runs.
Yeah, Luke Rayleigh off a lefty.
Yeah.
It was great to see that.
And it wasn't even like just a dink.
He got pretty good contact on that thing.
It was great to see.
By the way, I have to talk about something that happened actually right before the sixth inning because I hated this decision.
You get the runs to make it six to nine, right?
Yes.
You bring in Zach Pop to pitch to that part of the order?
Oh, I hated that.
Yeah.
I hated it.
It almost felt like a give up move.
Like Trent Thornton should have been pitching in that situation.
And then you bring in Pop for the eight.
or whatever. I really dislike that decision. You get right back into the game and that's who you
bring into pitch. So it's 10-6. You get those hits and then Julio has a terrible at bat. Big
Dumber has a terrible at bat. And Jorge Polanco had a really terrible at bat. Yeah. That's the
game. That is the game. You had a golden opportunity to get back out there with your three most
important offensive players and you flailed. And look, we can do all the big dumper has carried
this team. Big dumpers carry this team. We are a daily show who reacted it. Even with that
Homer, Cal Raleigh really hurt the Seattle Marr. He was bad day, yeah. Really, really had a bad day
today outside of that Homer, which means nothing. All it did was take a four-run game to make
a three-run game. Our buddy Ian likes to call those Richie Sexton homers. That was a Richie Sexton
Homer. It's not an insult to Cal Raleigh season. It's not an insult to what's going to happen going
forward. Right. But Cal Raleigh really hurt that a bat from Julio wasn't good enough. That a bat from
Jorge Polanco wasn't good enough. You had a golden opportunity to get back into this game.
But I forgot that they had brought in pop to pitch that fifth inning because that really took the
sales out for me. Like, right? Like when that when Pete Crowe Armstrong hits that home run, boy,
he's having a great year. I know we made fun of his defense and stuff. But,
like he might be the National League MVP this year.
He, um,
show Hey,
uh,
well,
show hay's the guy who's probably going to win,
but if you go by war,
Pete Crow Armstrong is leading in National League war.
So he's got a chance to,
uh,
at the very least he's in the top.
Once Sohai starts pitching,
I'll change.
Exactly.
A hundred thousand percent.
Um,
but that really took the sales out for me to,
to first you get that homework to make it a four run game.
Right.
Right.
Right.
And then you have your big bats all,
Lail in that situation.
That was really disappointing.
It's the only real negative I have from this game outside of Hancock and the ball just
out of that ballpark was that, man, he had a great chance there to get, like, more
than back into this game.
But like, make this an entirely brand new ball game.
Yeah, I'm going to go with my own little moment.
First, I'll respond to that.
Number one, with a question.
Do you feel that much better about Trent Thornton in that situation than Zach
pop?
Because I don't know if I do.
I don't know if I do.
I do.
Zach Pop is the definition of organizational debt.
Like the fact that he's here speaks to.
Oh, and by the way, this is the other thing I knew I wanted to talk about.
Boy, they got to go get a second lefty.
They have to go get a second lefty.
Like, unfortunately, Taylor Sossetto is both injured and not very good when healthy right now.
There's got to be a second lefty there.
That's the perfect time to bring in a second.
Heck, I might have gone with Gabe Spire there.
I may have gone with, because the Mariners do this a lot where they will have their starter
struggle.
It doesn't happen at a time, but they implement the strategy a lot.
Starter struggles.
Then you bring in one of your high leverage relievers to get you into a point where you have
the lengthy guy finish it out.
It gives you one more chance to kind of get back into that game.
Yeah.
Should have been Gabe Spire probably pitching there.
I will say this.
I don't want anyone pitching back to back.
in these games right now.
It's just the heat and it's going to be even worse tomorrow.
Oh, I really, really, really would like Big Dupor
to not be in the lineup tomorrow.
Give that dude a day off, man.
I'm not asking them to punt the game.
You know, play well.
You've got a really good pitcher on the mound tomorrow
and you can use Big Dumber in a late inning situation.
At the very least, he cannot catch tomorrow.
Cannot be the catcher in that kind of heat.
There has been some rumblings about moving this game time.
I hope that they do.
Because if they're playing in the middle of that heat again,
you're just taking such an unnecessary risk with human beings.
Why three straight day games?
Random thought.
Like, what's going on there?
So I get the Friday thing.
That's tradition.
They always play a day game on Friday.
That's what they've done for 100 years.
Yes.
Okay.
Saturday being a day game is weird.
Like going back-to-back day games is really weird.
So I just really hope that they take some precautions
because they didn't take very many today.
They didn't take very many at all.
And just being honest with you,
the Seattle Mariners training staff gets a lot of flack.
It gets a lot of flack about lack of oversight.
Proactiveness.
Proactiveness.
That's a great way to put it.
Proactivity, I should say.
Proactivity.
I think proactive, that's for my skin.
But it's something that they've got to be more careful about.
They've got to take necessary precautions.
It's 162 game season.
and wear some light jerseys.
Let them wear t-shirts and shorts tomorrow, folks.
Yeah.
And just be really, really careful.
Another random thought about the,
we're going to some weird tangents today.
We're going daytimes.
We're going jersey colors.
Yeah.
I think the darks are there only a way jersey right now?
Yeah, I think that might be true because they can't wear the,
because of what Major League Baseball implements,
you have a rule about how many jerseys that you can use.
You should be looking to see if you could wear the whites tomorrow, man.
Hot take, my favorite jerseys of the Mariners were the gray away jersey.
Oh, I love the gray.
Awesome.
Yeah, they were a solid jersey.
Why did they get rid of those?
Because they were the least worst selling jerseys of them.
Oh, man.
Yeah, it's disappointing for sure.
But that's my favorite ones.
I love them.
I love them.
There's a nostalgia factor for me there for sure.
But I like it better than the home white personally.
I like it better than the home white.
Random, random hot tape.
Well, what else can we say about this game?
The Homer.
This is not baseball game.
They played on the moon today.
Absolutely played on the moon.
And I'm happy Big Dumber got one of those moonshots.
But the rest of that game can be criticized.
You can't criticize Big Dumber season whatsoever on a daily show.
We can say that Big Dumper hurt the Seattle Mariners more than he helped the Seattle Mariner.
Yeah, and I understand Polanco had a bat at bat in that situation.
There was already two outs, number one.
So there's not much he could have done that was different.
He wasn't in the most high leverage spot.
It was, I mean, he gets.
two hits and a walk. So he gets on three times.
Sure, he had a good game. Any scores three runs. So like for doing daily reaction,
I think Polanco was great today. Palanco had a solid baseball game. It sucks that that,
but that's a high leverage moment there. And let's not forget that the reason the Mariners got
back into that game was a bunch of two out hits in the year before. The end before they got a
Solano hit. They got a Luke Rayleigh hit. That turned a nine three game into a nine six game. So that was,
it is important, right?
We can't just completely ignore a high leverage moment.
We can also say Jorge Polanco looks so much better at the plate than he did earlier.
So that's very encouraging to see.
I think when he's healthy is your second best sitter, honestly.
Hmm. Fair.
Hitter.
Hitter.
Like you got Cal and I think Jorge, when he's right, and that's a big if, when he's right,
I think I feel the most comfortable or second most comfortable with him at the plate than anyone else.
I'm going to go to one more little moment for you.
So first inning, Cubs get those two solo shots right off the bat.
So it's 2-0.
But the Mariners threatened in the bottom of the first right away to kind of,
sorry, top the second, excuse me.
Yeah.
To kind of answer right back.
Jorge Polanco, Ludo.
Rayne and Rosaryne has another bloop double that Pete Gromstrung,
doesn't really judge correctly.
Luke Rayleigh singles and Jorge Polanco scores.
Randy Roseran is on third base.
So you got Luke Rayleigh on first, Randy on third.
nobody out. Don and Solano, field of choice,
Cole Young, and then grounds into a double play. So you only get one run
from having first and third, nobody out, and then already having like three or four hits
in a row. That was a tough sequence for me because I felt like you could have at least
tied the game at that point and you're back to square one. Like, I think you're like Emerson
Hancock, like, okay, I had a tough first inning, a couple of home runs, but I come back
second inning and it's already tied. Like, great. This is the start of my start. You know,
it kind of gets a whole different mentality
the rest of the game than playing catch up.
Right.
I will be honest, I was taking my dog's poop when that home happened.
So I missed exactly what happened there.
But there's no doubt if you get first and third nobody out.
Yes.
One run isn't good enough there.
And, you know, the run comes before the first and third, right?
Like it was.
Yep.
And, you know, the contact play, I did see.
And I was going to ask you about that.
So Rosarina runs home on contact.
And he, like, there's some talk.
talk like okay you wait at third and then the guy throws the second to the double play and then you
get the you get the run if you just wait for the guy to throw a second i don't know that these guys
are pretty good they they turn those pretty quickly yeah and depending on where you are on the baseline
like there's a lot of factors that go into that so i will say this like if there was a runner on
second and third i understand the contact play there because the guy from second's getting the third
it's basically same situation type of deal although i kind of disagree with that mentick has brought that
up a few times, you ruin the chance to have runners at second and third in a two run hit by doing
that.
So it's not completely the same thing.
If you're just playing for one run, it sure is.
But if you're, you shouldn't be playing for one run, especially in the second inning of a
game where the ball is just going to be flying and you knew it from the start.
Yeah, that's disappointing.
It's disappointing.
And Cole Young had a pretty rough one today.
I was going to say he had a rough game day.
Yeah, he's going to have his ups and downs, man.
And it's good that he's contributing so much with the glove that you can kind of justify it a little bit more.
But I will say this, second base, third base, first base, all ever so upgradable for the Seattle Mariners, man.
Yeah, exactly. Solano is on one right now.
And it's great to see.
I don't want Donovan Salano my starting first baseman against right-handed pitching.
I just don't.
I don't, don't, don't.
Even though he has three years today against the right.
Yeah.
And you know, I was looking at the numbers.
He's been considerably better against right handers than left handers this year.
It's weird.
Small sample to be sure there.
But, you know, you can't completely ignore it.
But you got to look to upgrade all three of those positions.
You got to look.
You're not going to be able to.
But you should be able to upgrade at least two of them.
Second base would probably be my least upgradable, to be honest.
Because there's just less options.
There's less options.
And also, I will look long term a little bit there.
I want Cole Young to go through who struggles.
I want him to be able to be that guy who takes the bidder so that he can be better later.
There is something to be said about that.
It shouldn't be at the hindrance of 2025 completely if he's just that bad.
Yeah.
But the way he is now, like, okay, he's not a plus hitter, but he's a plus defender.
So he kind of evens itself out, especially if he's your ninth best hitter.
Like, it's fine.
Yes.
I will say this.
It really sucks right now that Dylan Moore is so bad.
Now, he did line of drive hit a nice liner today.
It was a very good play by Ian Hap.
But ideally you're having Dylan Moore as that platoon second baseman, right?
Like the best version of Dylan Moore is that platoon,
because Cole Young is going to just get shallacked by lefties all year.
All right, Polanco.
Yeah, yeah, except for the fact that I am so concerned that that guy
made out of tortilla chips that he's going to break himself.
Like, I'm sorry, this is a long sample size of those tortilla chips being crunched, man.
Like, availability is a skill, right?
And not the stale port tortilla chips that are actually kind of sturdy.
It's like the fresh ones that break really easily.
We're talking about a good Mexican restaurant that's bringing you out something
where you watch them make those MFers in the back, right?
Like, that's what we're talking about.
I used to call C.J. ProSise Tortilla chip as well.
Oh, God.
So there's just, but that's my concern, right, is that number one,
Jorge Polanco is a bad defensive player, no matter what.
Yeah.
Number two, if he has another hamstring injury, this team is in trouble.
Yes.
I'm with you on that.
I'm with the thought.
I don't know.
I'm not saying that's their solution.
It's a good thought.
If you need someone to platoon at that spot, that would probably be my first option.
I'm not going to Dylan Moore.
No comment further on that subject.
By the way, I just noticed this shirt, by the way, is three sizes too small.
I just put it on for this podcast because I had a very inappropriate shirt on before that.
That involved big Pennix energy, and I didn't want that to be in our podcast.
But yeah, if you look, I didn't just get really muscular.
I just have a shirt that is way, way too small.
All right.
That's today's podcast, I guess.
That's how we end it.
That's how we end.
I think that's perfect, perfect way to end this one because what a week.
weird game.
Real quick, if you missed the beginning of this.
Yes.
Trent Thornton and Home Plate umpire, whose name I should have, I hope you're okay, man.
Like, that was, that was scary stuff, and these are human beings, and I just really hope
everybody's okay.
I concur on that one, and please, oh, please, I know we're going to get comments about,
hey, Kirby wasn't starting today.
Why do you have that at your background?
I screwed up.
I screwed up.
I didn't want to stop the stream and then starting to get.
It was the wind.
It was the wind.
It made us blow away our previous Q-guard.
The wind in Chicago blew away all of the stuff that we made for the background.
So, yeah, I really appreciate you guys.
Thanks so much for hanging out with us today.
One more, at least as of right now, it's at 1120 once again.
Pacific Time.
Say hi to wherever you're watching from.
If you're not in the Pacific Time Zone, thank you so much for tuning in with us.
The American Postcast.
My name is Anderson Hurst.
That's Christopher Crawford.
We will see you guys tomorrow.
Keep an eye on the start time, as Chris said.
we might have a time change.
So as of now,
we'll see you guys after the game at 1120 tomorrow.
Let's go win the series.
Sound good?
Okay.
