My name is Anderson Hurst. Thank God for Brian Wu. He was fantastic today. But the Mariners still end up losing this series,

a four-game series against the athletics, losing three out of four. win and salvage the series on Sunday with a two zero victory. Brian Wu, eight innings strong. One hit, just two walks and nine strikeouts. Just fantastic work from the starter when you absolutely needed it. Backs up against the wall. And we can talk all day long about if this team is still in the hunt right now. I tend to think not. But at this time, you just got to to keep winning as much as you can and hope some other stuff happens. You're at that point in the season.

Houston did end up losing today. Texas ended up coming back to win. So you don't really gain a ton of ground in terms of the division or anything like that. But at least the Mariners did their job on one of the four days against the athletics this weekend. Just quickly, we'll start with the start with Brian Wu. We'll talk about the couple big moments offensively, but mostly not great still offensively against a horrid athletics pitching staff. And then we'll get to our unsung hero, as we always do. I want to address a couple things.

Number one, my absences recently, plural. There's just been a lot going on. I won't get into super detail because we're here to talk Mariners. But just wanted to give you guys a heads up that, you know, I'm moving into a new place. I obviously got, you know, my work schedule, my family schedule and everything. It's, and this weekend was just a lot going on at one time. So I apologize for missing the last couple of nights, but we're back today.

We'll be back on Tuesday as well. So we can talk a little bit after that first game of the Texas series. And then I also wanted to discuss last night with the Mariners, not the game itself because we're, we're a postcast from Texas. today's game. But something bigger picture that tells me what's going on with the Seattle Mariners is the fact that the players were not available after a hugely disappointing loss last night. And it's quite frustrating, honestly, because you want to see accountability. And I know that's been a talking point for a lot of people this year with this version of the

Mariners and it doesn't really seem like that's a huge talking point for them but the fact that no Mariners hitters were available for post game interviews they all got out of the clubhouse before reporters were allowed in and it's just I don't know man it's not what you want to see with a team that's struggling and you want to see some ownership of uh you know things that have gone wrong it just it looks kind of weak to be completely honest. So even though they get the win today, I just wanted to address that and say that's just not a good look, Mariners. So I don't know if that's a Dan Wilson decision.

I don't know if that's a PR decision. I don't know if that's the player's decision. But, you know, the least you can do is address the media and take it. Take it like you should, considering they deserve it at this point. So, but let's get to today's game. I mean, it's Brian Wu. That's the story today. He was just fantastic.

That's the Brian Wu we know and love. Fastball was working. Slider, sweeper was working. All three iterations of the fastball, I should say, were working. And he goes eight innings. That's been, I think, something that Mariners, starters as a whole, have been struggling with this year. And it's the length.

It's the efficiency. Yes, you can get a quality. start in there. And even if you go five, five and a third, five and two thirds of three runs or less, you still give your team a chance to win, less so with this offense, but more on that later. But you haven't seen the true dominance as often as we would have liked. With a group, it's talented as this, I don't think the starting rotation is absolved from blame for this season. And all that's to say that you finally got one of those today from Brian Wu. Eight innings, one hit is absolutely going to get the job done,

and that falls into that category. Nine strikeouts, just the two walks, and it was both the same guy, Mr. Walton, on the other side, Donovan Walton, former Mariner, by the way. So, I mean, the fact that he was able to kind of wake up and put a performance out like you did today when the rest of the team has just been sleepwalking their way through the series goes to show you that he is kind of cut of that ilk and he does have the mentality of, hey, I got to do my job. Even though it's not looking likely we're going to make the playoffs at this point,

I got to go out and shove and do everything I can to give us the best chance today. I mean, his rapport with Johnny Parada looks fantastic. he's willing to shake him off, which I think is a big key. There may be a little bit of, I don't want to say power dynamic, but just like, hey, pitchers respect Cal Raleigh. So even though they feel better with a certain type of pitch,

they don't want to shake them off as much because Cal Raleigh is Cal Rale. And it ends up not working out as well. Versus with Johnny Parada, it's just like he's working with the pitchers a little bit more, I feel like behind the plate. And pitchers can feel like they can, take ownership with, hey, no, I don't want to throw that pitch.

I want to throw this pitch in this situation. So I saw that a lot with Brian Wood today, which is great to see. Not a lot of bullpen decisions when your starter goes eight. And it's still a close game. And you throw in your closer in the ninth. So nothing really to talk about on that front. Let's take a quick break. We'll come back and discuss the offense a little bit.

Not a lot going on, but you still get a couple big hits. Even though the fourth inning was where you do all your damage, it still feels like you could have gotten more from that. And I feel like in more important games this year, where you have a little bit more up against you, you want to get more from that. So you get the two runs that you need, but still not looking great offensively.

And we have a couple numbers I want to speak of. regarding star players on the Seattle Mariners that I just, I'm still disappointed in. So let's take a quick break. I mean, I guess you didn't get swept. I'll talk a little bit about the offense, and then I want to talk about the series as a whole, because this kind of put the nail in the coffin on the Mariners season.

At least it put the nail in the coffin of having control of your own destiny because you feel like if you had, really if you had won the series, which you should have, you would go into the Texas series of momentum, feeling like, okay, it's a team that's ahead of us. We can kind of go and grab a couple games there and gain some ground.

But you're really fighting to stay alive in the season. But let's quickly talk about the offensive production today. All came in the fourth inning. Look, we've talked all season long about this team's inability to string hits together. And that's why the lack of walks has really been frustrating because when you can't string hits together, look, not a lot of teams do that in today's baseball.

But you kind of combine walking and working counts with pitchers, even if you get outs. And then the slug, you know, it may not get a lot of singles and singles and singles, but you maybe walk one, you move the runner over. at that point. And then a double gets him in or a home run gets the two runs that you need. That's more likely to happen than, you know, three or four straight singles.

But the Mariners kind of prove that route to be still available for them because they got, what, five straight singles in the fourth inning to score their two runs. Canzone, Julio, Cal, JP, and Josh Naylor with the two RBIs coming from. from Cal and JP. And look, it's not, a lot of people are saying you can't rely on the home run ball very much. I tend to think that's more reliable in terms of a run producing source. Now, it can't be the only thing. Don't get me wrong.

But the home run ball is a more reliable source of runs than being a singles team. And continuously trying to put six, five, like four, five, six hits in a row together to score runs. But they do that in the fourth inning, so good for them. And, you know, they get their two runs, but they still left meat on the bone. After Josh Naylor's single, you get strikeouts from Weston Wilson. Michael Royal, making his major league debut, by the way. Congratulations.

But you see maybe why it's taken a little bit to get a Royo up here, and then Johnny Paradea as well. So Mariners just get two, but that's all I need. Brian Wu was fantastic today. And it's good to see Cal with one of those two RBIs there. He's really turned it around. And he's not really had like a four-for-four-four day where he's hitting two bombs or anything like that. It's a lot of, okay, every at bat looks good.

You still maybe have a strikeout or two and a hard line-out, but you're still getting the kind of process looks so much better with Cal Rale. hitting balls hard. He's taking the pitches he's supposed to be taking, swinging at the pitches he's supposed to be swinging at and connecting with the pitches that he's supposed to be connecting with. And that's all you can ask for as a hitter. And that's why he's been so much better as of late. So good for him. He almost hit a homer today too. They showed the stat about the wind blowing it. But, you know, if his process continues like it has been, it will end up being so much better for him towards the end of this season. Look, I've said this.

so many times. You'll never look back at Cal's numbers for the entirety of 2026 would be happy with his production but you can say, hey, at least the last month or so if he continues this, he looked way more like the Cal Raleigh that we know and love. So that's good for him.

Hopefully that would kind of really stave off some of my worry about a true fall off a cliff coming Chris Davis like where you have a massive season and you just fall off a cliff which I was worried about. for a lot of this season because it just everything looked broken with him and it was a mental

thing. But the fact that he's kind of put it back together in the last part of this season is big. On the other side, it's Julio. And he actually started off this season better than he normally does. I think he had a really good May. It was his one really good month. But every other month this year has just been either average or way below average. And it's been way below average to the last couple months. And there's a chance after everything that Cal Raleigh actually has a higher OPS at the end of the season than Julio does, which is just insane to me. Cal at 674, Julio at 695 now. Julio's at 695, a below 700 OPS for Julio Rodriguez. It's just not good enough. And you're not seeing adjustments either, which sucks. And I could say the same about Josh Naylor too, who,

look, they all get hits today. Julio, Cal, JP, and Josh all get hits. two of those get RBIs as well. So I'm not talking specifically about today. I'm kind of more bigger picture whole series talk here. Josh Naylor really looks like he's mailing it in at this point in this season. I hate to be that guy to say, hey, he got his money and then kind of just coasted. But that's really what it's looked like for a lot of the season. And Julio's just failed to adjust.

He's failed to adjust. He kind of looks like he's relying on his talent a little too much. So we'd love to see bounce back. from those guys, if not for the rest of this year, at some point next year. Mariner's get the 2-0 victory over the athletics. Unsung Hero for the day. I'll give it to Michael O'Royo.

It doesn't get a hit today. He gets the strikeout, but he makes his Major League debut. I wanted to see him for a while, and it looks like he's going to get a run-up, kind of run-of-games here. You're also seeing Las Montez kind of come in and out of the lineup, and both of those guys, they're not MLB-ready products right now. But I would like to see just flashes of the game.

their tools, get an offseason, work through some stuff, and then come back and have a chance to make the roster in 2027 whenever that season starts. So maybe extended off season anyway. So that's kind of what I'm looking for because, again, I don't know what the likelihood of the Mariners making the playoffs is at this point. Let's look at some young guys coming up for next year. But good for Michael O'Royle, making his Major League debut. A lot of people have been asking for that for a long time.

And you know, you really kind of need to sweep that series if you want any sort of chance to put yourself back in the conversation.
