Not that the Mariners had much of a chance to make anything happen, but that just about ends things with their loss today. 10 to 5 to the Texas Rangers. Just not good.

And once again, they're showing us who they are as a baseball team. I think for a long time we've expected them to, don't expect it, have been waiting for the breakout, the run that they go on to prove that they can get back into things in a bad American League and in a bad American League, West specifically. But they're just showing us who they are. And that's a bad baseball team.

They can't hit. They can't play defense. And they really can't pitch anymore either, by the way. guys. So there's not much this team does well. And there's not many players that this team has that have overperformed this year. In fact, we'll do an exercise today because I'm over just going through moments of the game where you felt like it just got away from you. But, you know, we'll talk about a couple different parts about this game. But I want to go through and talk about what players have had good seasons.

And it's a short list. Let's leave it at that. Mariners lose 10 to 5. This is the Mariners Postcast. My name's Anderson Hurst. We go live after every single Mariner baseball game. I'm wearing my Seahawks jersey because, thank God it's Seahawks season tomorrow because I can't deal with this Mariner baseball team this year.

They're just not a good team. So hopefully the Seahawks can prove that they can do what the Mariners can't. So, yeah, just not good. Good for Las Montez. He hits a homer in a big moment to make it four to three. But other than that, man, there wasn't much good in this game at all. Bryce Miller shows why he shouldn't be a starter anymore. And the bullpen is just god-awful right now.

So just not a good showing for Los Marineros. But again, they're showing us the type of baseball team. they are at this point in time and that's not a good one. Let's start with a start with Bryce Miller. His role has changed multiple times over the last couple of weeks. He was a starter. Then he gets told, like, probably going to be piggybacked when Kate Anderson gets called up. And then goes to the bullpen and then Emerson Hancock gets hurt.

So he goes back to the rotation. And there's a lot of moving parts there. Again, it just shows a poor planning process. for the Mariners in terms of what they were doing. And he had shown even way before they made all of these changes that he wasn't good enough to be in the rotation, but they took forever to make the decision. And it kind of really hurt them.

But he has to go back into the rotation. And he shows today why he should not be in the rotation. He just looks, he looks gassed. He looks like his arms kind of dying, to be completely honest, which is not easy. to do with him. He had all the stuff about the elbow in the off season. When he gets the surgery, ends up knocking the surgery, saying he feels good.

Then he has to start the season on the IL, but then comes back. And the first month, two months of him starting was really good. He looked like the best Mariners pitcher. And then he just falls off a cliff. So, yeah, I just, I don't know what his prospects look for. for next season. I don't think he should be in the rotation in 2027. He should be part of this bullpen,

which needs help, by the way, because they weren't much better. Jose Ferre comes in, gives up the earned run. And three of those four earned runs go to Bryce Miller when Ferrer was in. But he didn't help his cause. And then Bizarro comes in. Can't even get an out or gets one.

out, sorry, but gives up four runs, one walk, one strikeout, two home runs he gives up. Vargas was decent. Chris Well was okay. Rucker was fine and Kobe Milner was fine. And here's another thing. We have our text thread with a couple of the MollyWop Monday guys, Chris Crawford, who you guys know used to be on the show with me all the time. Even in a blowout loss where it's like, okay, you can't really blame the manager for the loss. He still does things poorly, where he's using what? How many relievers did he have to use today? One, two, three, four, five, six relievers. Right after an off day where you have Kate Anderson on a pitch count tomorrow.

It's just, he just doesn't know what he's doing, guys. It feels like either, you know, Rucker or Vargas could have gone, or even Chris Well could have gone two innings. the game was already gone at that point. Save one of these arms for later in the in the series. But not like it matters. It's just, it's not,

this team isn't going anywhere. It's this, this tonight felt like the nail on, like the weekend felt like the real nail on the coffin. But you could still hold out a glimmer of hope of going five and oh against the Rangers and Astros in these two series. And you lost the first game. So that's,

It's not happening. Now, we'll come back. We'll discuss a couple things. Las Montez, you know, his outlook on the season and a couple of the guys. I want to talk about, I want to go through kind of the everyday players and say which players have either performed two expectations or over expectations. And here's a hint. It is a short list.

the Mariners. They go to 67 and 78 on the season. It's just about over now. Thank God. I've even gotten to the place in the last week or so where I'm a Mariner fan. I always have been. I've never rooted

for the Mariners to lose. But I've really gotten to a place where I'm just like, man, it would be so much easier if they just keep losing these games and we don't have to worry about you know, more excruciating pain coming later in the season because this team's not going anywhere. So there's a little part of me that wants them to just lose out. And not even for the main reason would be for sweeping changes, but that's not going to happen. The biggest thing

it's going to happen is they will fire Dan if they don't make the playoffs, which they won't. but they're going to have the same philosophy with roster construction. Jerry's not going anywhere. I don't see much change other than the manager, which I have said needed to happen for a long time, but there needs to be much more than that. And I think if you, you know, kind of went on a little run here,

which was a possibility for a while, and then felt just short, or you sneak in and lose in the first round, it's like you can kind of, I wouldn't, but you could see them justifying what they were doing as, hey, this was just kind of a bad year.

Let's go back and run it back and try and get back to where we were in 2025. And that's just not good enough anymore, guys. There's a lot of players who have regressed kind of consistently. And not just hitters, too. We're talking the starting rotation. I mean, George Kirby's inconsistent.

Logan Gilbert, even, who probably is the most consistent out of all of them, but still is very, very iffy. Brian Wu, we saw his road struggles this year. Obviously, Bryce Miller now, Emerson Hancock had a great year, but up until now he's been, you know, very mid as a starter. You don't know what you're going to get from Kate Anderson. There's no real true thing on this team anymore, which is wild to say, because you could,

Going into this year, you were thinking, okay, you know, Cal Raleigh would be, he won't hit 60 home runs again, but he'll be one of the best catchers in the league easily for years to come. That obviously hasn't been the case this year. Who you Rodriguez, one of the best center fielders in the league. Obviously, hasn't been the case this year. You could say that you have one of the best starting rotations in baseball. And you could say you added to a bullpen, which was already like at least above average last year. and it's a lot of the same players, and they've gotten worse. A lot of them have gotten worse.

So look, it's a bigger discussion with, you know, player development and all that stuff. I think the Mariners do a really good job of player development at the minor league level, but the player development process doesn't stop when you get to the major leagues. You have to continue to develop them when they're in the majors, and you just don't see that. There is no one player, really, that's gotten better since he has come to the Mariners. major league team and that's Cal Raleigh. Everyone else has been basically the same since they got called up.

Julio Rodriguez, basically the same. He's probably worse than he was when he was a rookie. Cole Young, you could say, took a jump in year two. But even he has really quieted down in the second part of the year. He's below a 700 OPS now. Josh Naylor was kind of a free agent slash trade, so I won't really look at that.

I'm looking more in-house stuff. To the pitching side, I mean, Logan Gilbert was excellent in 2024, but has not been that guy since then. He gets a couple outings here and there. Brian Wu has always been very good. Has it had a down year this year. I still believe he's a very good player,

but you're not seeing guys take jumps when they get to the major league level. That's a huge aspect to how you, get your team better, especially if you're not going to go out and spend a bunch of money. So it's just not, I don't know, I don't know. It's something that I'm pretty concerned about. I see a couple in the chat saying Dom Canzone. Yeah, I'll give you Dom.

Definitely, especially since it's not just this year, he had a really good year last year as well. So I'll give you Dom Canzone. Why not? But also, again, wasn't a minor league guy. here through the Mariners minor league system he was a trade candidate right so slightly different scenario but i'll give you dumb um yeah i mean it's just these are guys that you expect to get better because a lot of the reasons people would buy into the mariners is because of their youth right and these

guys are inevitably they're going to just get better right and they have not done that so um hopefully that's not the case with Las Montes because he looks great. I mean, you see the holes in his game, obviously. But it's just it's fun to see a guy that is coming up and having a good time, has a big ceiling, obviously, but this is, again, this is what we're talking about. Sealing requires development to get to that ceiling, right?

So that's where I have real question marks on whether he's going to be able to hit that as a player, but still has all the talent in the world, which is great to see. And that home run, man, it's the longest home run in the stack cast era at T-Mobile Park for anyone batting at T-Mobile Park, not just the Mariners, but opposing teams as well. And it's the tide for the longest home run in Major League Baseball this season. and that dude can flat out hit the ball a long way. So good for him. That's,

and it was a big, it was a big, it was a big-ish moment too. You were down four-zero. It looked like, okay, here we go again. He hits a three-run,

home run when you had struggled with runners in scoring position in previous at-bats. And it's like, okay, we're ready to go. We're back into this thing. We can kind of take some momentum, but then Bryce Miller can't get through four innings.

And Edward Bazaar, just can't get it done. Can't get it done. He's, look, and it's one of the things, the thing about Bizarro now is he's bad now. Like straight up, he's just not a good pitcher right now. But a lot of it, I feel like, is not really his fault. He's been overused a ton the past year and a half.

He was used until I felt like his arm was going to fall off last year. Then he went to the WBC. And then he's been used almost every day this year too. I think he's the third or fourth most relief innings pitched in Major League Baseball. Man, it's just they keep, this is the thing about coaching. You have to put guys in positions to succeed. And he is not being put in a position to succeed at all. He absolutely has to be better.

Don't get me wrong. But it just feels like he's set up to fail with how much they use him and what positions they use him in. Um, and I get it. A lot of it is because, you know, you have no Matt Brash. Um, the other guys you don't feel great about. You haven't been able to develop the, the, the no name arms like you feel like you have been in the past.

Um, but it's still something that I feel like they've just way overused this guy. So, um, that's, that's, again, maybe, maybe a managerial thing. Maybe it's a roster construction thing. You could look at it multiple different ways. But either way, it leads to a mariner loss, 10 to 5 against the Rangers. The season is most likely done right now. You'd really have to because the Astros won today, too. So you're toast.

I mean, I think that makes you, what, eight games back now, seven, excuse me. So it's just you're done. It's over. It sucks. and the thing that sucks the most is you're seeing on the other side of the diamond, a team, an average team at best in the Rangers, that is fighting for a playoff spot and is playing like they want to go to the playoffs and are doing the things needed to win baseball games right now.

And it's like, oh, that's what it's supposed to look like. And it has not looked like that for the Seattle Mariners. Honestly, all year long. Quite frustrating, but expected at this point. Seahawks season is starting tomorrow, so hopefully they can prove something else. And that kind of goes along the lines with what I usually mention is during day games. Unfortunately, I can't do postcasts because I am on the air during that time for KJR. So it's just I'll have to talk to you guys at the beginning of the next series,

which happens to be on Friday against the athletics in Sacramento. So hopefully, I almost said hopefully the Mariners keep losing, so they are not in it by that point. And we have no delusions of anything else, but I'm not going to be that guy. We'll talk to you after the game in Sacramento. It's been a tough season.
