Starting point is 00:00:04 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day. Well, they tried to lose it multiple times. They tried to lose it. But they don't. The Mariners, in their third straight extra innings game in Texas, get the job done.
Starting point is 00:00:32 It's the Mitch Garver game. It's the bullpen series. The whole series, the bullpins, excellent. Louise Castillo going six strong, one-er-and-run, kind of seems like it was 10 years ago at this point after everything that happened in extra innings. But my gosh, that's a big series win for the Mariners when it seemed all could have been lost.
Starting point is 00:00:53 I'm Anderson Hurst. To my left is Christopher Crawford. This is the locked-on Mariners post-cast show where we go live right after every single Mariners baseball game, right after the final pitch. And we talk about the game that we just, watched and man i kind of joked right before we went live man what are we going to talk about because kind of for the first few innings about six seven even eight innings it's like all right another
Starting point is 00:01:16 you know extra innings game but you know something happens and then we just got everything we needed to talk about in those extra innings we're going to talk about mitch garver we're going to talk about castillo start as we always do and that bullpen uh i don't even need to say on sung hero because just that's just who it's going to be for me it's just the entire bullpen because they all performed excellently today. So Chris Crawford, what are your original thoughts after watching the Mariners take two out of three in Texas? You know, there's process and there's result, and sometimes result beats process, and thank goodness it did for the Seattle Mariners today, because they deserve to lose this baseball game. Let's just make it, keep it 100 for the kids.
Starting point is 00:02:02 They deserve to lose this game, but they don't. And it's a great, way to end the road trip, a road trip that had some real lows, to be sure, but also had some real highs. And this one had both. It was a absolute roller coaster of a baseball game. But these are the type of games, if you're going to be a playoff team, you have to win. You have to come through and despite some terrible decision-making, despite some terrible late hitting, despite one bad pitch from only just one minute, and it wasn't even that bad of a pitch. One bad moment against a really good hitter. Despite all that, you still get the win and you take two of three.
Starting point is 00:02:41 You might look back on this series and say, boy, it really should have been one they swept, you know, if you want to be the negative Nelly, Nancy, or whatever you want to be. But it is so nice to see them win this type of game. It's so nice to come home for a big seven-game homestand and to take the six of those 10 on the road. against some pretty good baseball teams, not great baseball teams, although the Cubs are a pretty good one. This was fun. This was fun, but boy, oh boy, there were some real moments. My buddy Matthew brought it up. The process did not win today. No one, and sometimes that's okay. More, in fact, it's always okay. Ultimately, it's a win in
Starting point is 00:03:23 lost sport. It is ultimately about that and you got the win. Boy, we're going to talk about some decision making because I was about ready to blow a casket. based on what we were watching there and extra innings. So much to talk about. But again, Mitch Garver just saves your butt today. Yeah, no doubt. Almost single-handedly. Like, the pitching was really good.
Starting point is 00:03:45 But on the offensive side, Mitch Garver saved your butt. So let's start with the start, and then we'll get into some extra inning stuff. Luis Castillo, like I said, it feels like it was last week. Right. You saw him.
Starting point is 00:03:58 I don't want to say struggle with the lineup, but it definitely wasn't done. dominating by any stretch of the imagination. But six innings, one and run, on a day you needed, you started to go six innings, based on how much your bullpins pits lately. I think that was a pretty good start from number 58. So a lot of times when you hear a manager after the game, and I brought this up a few times, but you'll hear a guy say, oh, he battled, what it really means he sucked.
Starting point is 00:04:23 This was the rare time where battled actually is a compliment. Because Louise Cupert didn't have anywhere close to his best command, stuff today and still being able to get through six innings of one run baseball. Now, some of that credit also goes to the Texas Rangers for just being abhorred once they had runners in scoring position. They just flat out did not get the job done. But he battled. He battled and gave you six innings of one run baseball when he didn't have near his best stuff, nor his best command. And that was the big thing there. Like he just was falling behind hitters and then just couldn't put him away in the few times that he did. Six innings, seven
Starting point is 00:05:01 hits, one run, two walks, four strikeouts when you are at your quote unquote worst, you know, like that you will take for sure. And it kind of defeats that whole Louise Castillo can't get it done on the road argument. Now there's been 20 of starts that prove that. His numbers are just worse on the road because you got to give up run somewhere, right? And he's been so good at home. But I thought it was a solid outing from a guy who doesn't get nearly enough credit for avoiding the clunkers, avoiding the disastrous starts. Very nice job, Luis. Yeah, and as David points out, that clinches the season series with the Texas Rangers, which could be huge in the long run. We've seen how much these end-of-season races in the AL-West
Starting point is 00:05:46 come down to tiebreakers so often. So that could be a big, big win for the Mariners. For sure. Yeah, I look at the American League wildcard situation right now, and it's kind of embarrassing that there's going to be three of them. Like, it's just, it's there's, there's ever been a year, and there's been more than a few years where it's been embarrassing to have six, but, or six total playoff teams, but, um, this is, this is huge. The Rangers are absolutely going to be one of those teams you're battling. The Minnesota Twins are going to be one of those teams you're battling. The Boston Red Sox are going to be one of those teams they're battling. And I think the Mariners clinched the series against all three of those teams. Yes.
Starting point is 00:06:24 That's huge. And tiebreakers matter. The Mariners lost a tiebreaker last year. Now, I think they ended up being one game back, but the whole thing with the Royals and blah, blah, blah, it matters, right? It matters. And being able to guarantee a series win against a division rival before the flipping All-Star break is nuttier than squirrel turns. Yeah. And like Texas has started to round off a little bit. I'm not saying they're the main threat for Seattle, obviously, in the division. That's still going to be Houston moving forward. But just knowing that if they do end up kind of making their way back into this race a little bit that you have that base covered if it comes to that that that's something that you can always hang your hat on but at the end of the day we're just chasing wins at this point
Starting point is 00:07:04 we're chasing series wins we're chasing game wins and they got it done today even if it looked ugly for a while because oh boy the extra innings um let's i i have a lot to say about it so i might save that for after we give some love to our sponsors but let's give some love the bullpen let's give some love the bullpen real quick because uh as we talked about castillo goes six innings um Like you say battled, but six innings, one-one baseball, it's the result that matters. That's going to be kind of the saying of the day today, it seems like. It's the result that matters. And the mayor just get the win today.
Starting point is 00:07:37 And Castillo gets through six, even though he didn't have his greatest stuff and it didn't look pretty at times. But he gets the job done when they absolutely needed him to. And then, who was it? Legamina comes in for the seventh and eight. Just really good stuff. Looks excellent in the process. They're stretching everybody out, it seems like, because. because Castillo was at 91 after five innings,
Starting point is 00:08:01 and it's like, okay, they could pull him now, but they didn't, he was like, no, I'm giving you six. We need to give you six, and he did. Legamina, they stretched him out for two innings. They stretched Bizarro out to pitch, like, it seems like for the 59th time out of 60 games. It's just crazy how much he's throwing the ball. Third straight day for Carlos Vargas,
Starting point is 00:08:23 and then Trent Thornton goes two innings. So, bullpen overall, just might be the player of the game today if you look at that as a whole. Yeah, you look at six innings of one run baseball and getting five strikeouts as well. That's pretty darn solid. I don't think we can overstate how big it was to get an extra inning out of Luis Castillo now, though, just looking at this box score because there's no way in hell that Andres Munoz or Matt Bras were going to pitch in this game, right?
Starting point is 00:08:49 After going back to back. There's no way those guys are working three straight games the way that they have managed this situation. and huge for him to get through six. And then just an awesome job by Legamina in particular. Like, he's had his struggles at times, but the overwhelming majority of the time, the experience has been a positive one for someone who had zero expectations
Starting point is 00:09:12 whatsoever. Really nice job by the bullpen today. Totally agree. That's going to be my unsung hero, but I'm going to wait to hear Chris Crawford, and you guys can mention yours while we talk about some fan door. All right, summer sports are in full. full swing. And whether you're all about the baseball under the lights, golf on the green,

Starting point is 00:10:17 open the Fandul app today or visit Fandul.com to get started. All right, let's talk about the extra innings because I have a lot to say. You get to the ninth. Let me just say. Let me just pull up the game log here. So you get to the ninth inning. It's one-one. You get through the ninth with, I believe that was Carlos Vard. No, it was the second in.
Starting point is 00:10:46 It was Bizarro. That's right. That's right. That's right. It was Bizarro. And you kind of get a pretty quick one, two, three. You get Ozuna singling, but then he steals, but they get the one, two, three after that point. So top of the 10th. with Julio on second base. Bruce Bochi intentionally walks Cal yet again.
Starting point is 00:11:09 He will do that later, by the way, too. Yeah. And then question about this one for you. Luke Rayleigh, sacrifice bunt with nobody out. You get Julio to third, Cal Raleigh to second. It was a good punt. They got it down. But it's kind of what we talked about with wasting an out sort of situation.
Starting point is 00:11:28 And then they intentionally walk Randy or Rosalena to load the bases, with one out for Donovan Solana. Before we get into this whole thing, what did you think about the Luke Rayleigh Bunt decision with your four-hole hitter? So the reason I didn't mind it is because Rayleigh wasn't bunting for a sacrifice fly there. He was doing a drag bunting and trying to get the first base.
Starting point is 00:11:52 I don't mind bunting for a hit in that situation at all. The positive of it is that the runners advance, right? Yeah. One of the nice things. but the way he dropped that bun down, that was clearly him trying to beat it out. What a fantastic play by Luke Jackson to get him out there because I thought Luke Rayleigh was probably thinking,
Starting point is 00:12:12 oh, I'm safe. Like, this is going to be an easy. He did. If you look back, he's like, no, no, no, no. It was just an awesome play there. So that's what I don't mind. Like, would I prefer him swinging there probably? But I can justify the drag bunt in that situation.
Starting point is 00:12:28 What I would like to see him do more on these drag bunts, because he likes them, is that I'd like to see him pushing the ball down the first base line more often. It makes it so it's a difficult tag for the first baseman, a little bit more difficult of a play. Lots of moving spots with the first baseman going off, pitch or covering, all that stuff. Because if you watch that play, Luke Rayley's moving as that bunt goes down. If he's just sacking there, then he's going to be holding that thing up and hoping for the best, right? So it wasn't a sackbunt. We'll talk about a sackbunt that I hated it a little bit. But I didn't mind it there. I didn't mind going for that chance to get the bases loaded with nobody out.
Starting point is 00:13:02 And worse comes to worst, you've got two cracks of getting those runners in. Yeah. So then you got bases loaded with one out after they intentionally walk. Randy, man, they love to IBB these guys. Bochie is very old school. He is not afraid of the intentional walk. And it almost worked. Honestly, almost worked in terms of like you didn't have to face Cal once an extra
Starting point is 00:13:22 innings because of it. So, I mean, if you're looking at it that way, I honestly don't hate that from Bocebochie. Anyways, and we'll compare that to what Dan Wilson did or didn't do later. But you got Donovan Solano. Singles, he comes through in the big moment. Don Mislano, once again, huge hit. Julio scores in third. Nogrone sends howl.
Starting point is 00:13:46 Is there any defending this? Because I was like, what are they doing? No. What are they? And I got an argument on Twitter with this guy and says it was the right decision to do that. And I'm just like, there, there's no reason to there. You would have what, still bases loaded with one out. So you could still sacrifice fly and get it to the outfield and you score one more run.
Starting point is 00:14:09 Yeah. Instead of two outs and first and second. So what are we thinking here? And like, I get, okay, he was probably safe. Yeah. They had already lost their challenge. Yep. But the throw beat him.
Starting point is 00:14:22 It wasn't even close. No. And Cal Rale just kind of, uh, adjusted and because he was running and didn't slide, and you talked about this before, how not sliding can sometimes actually make it harder to tag. Yes. That's the reason why it was as close to the play as it was,
Starting point is 00:14:38 but the throw completely beat him. It wasn't even close. So talk about the send from the groan there. It was an awful decision. Awful. Especially with one out. It just doesn't make any sense there. And, you know, you would have had second and third,
Starting point is 00:14:51 or first and third, whatever the heck it was, with a couple of out, or one out. And, you know, it's easier to, with Captain Hindsight to say, hey, Garber singles on the next play, it makes it even easier. I haven't gone to that point yet. That's a failure in process. It's an absolute failure in process. And I take issue too with that challenge in the ninth inning because that wasn't close. Cole Young didn't even come close to Tag and Homeboy.
Starting point is 00:15:18 So it wasted that challenge. That wasted the ability to get. Now, should the own plate umpire get that call right? Yeah, he should have. because I think Cal Raleigh was safe by a relatively large amount. Like, he beats that. The throw beats him, but he is running full speed. And thank goodness he is, because if it's a tag, he's thrown out by like 10 feet.
Starting point is 00:15:39 Or excuse me, if it's a slide, he's thrown out by like 10 feet because you got to slow down and all of that. It was a great throw, but it wasn't even close. I'm sorry, Craig. Like, it just wasn't even close. It shouldn't have happened. It shouldn't happen. It took a great throw to beat him. Fine.
Starting point is 00:15:54 you know what doesn't take a great throw not going there's no reason for a throw to happen yeah this is the thing just because there's a loaded weapon in the room doesn't mean you have to shoot it right there's no reason for you to send cow rale in that situation play for the beginning get a chance to get a four one lead and it's not just hindsight that this ends up killing the seattle mariners because Mitch garver comes through with a single to give them a three one lead and you know you're feeling but you take away that chance of that, oh, oh, man. That was a huge moment. And the grown has made a lot of mistakes.
Starting point is 00:16:33 It's a hard job. We only highlight when they do a bad job. It's just, the third base coach is the exact same thing as the guy who is holding kicks, right? We only notice them when they don't do their job right. And we should do a better job of saying terrific send, but we don't, right? It was a horrible sin. It was a horrible decision in process and a horrible decision and result, and the Mariners should be thanking their lucky stars that didn't cost them the game today.
Starting point is 00:17:01 Yeah, we're lucky it didn't because, I mean, without even thinking about the Garver single after that, without even thinking about the home run, the second inning after that, it's, you give your, that's a really good. Excellent. A lot of you won't get that, but like, look up Chekhov and that is, holy crap. I'm going to call it a tweet in the situation. really good tweet great great comment well great comment i'm going to shout you out that's it that's why we love your guys in the comments section keep sending us in um check off's thrown i love that that's that's really
Starting point is 00:17:33 good so you're giving yourself more chances and this is part of the reason why we don't like bunting as much either is because you're you're purposely taking away chances uh to get a hit to get more runs in right and i like i saw Craig i saw your comment earlier about it would have been worse with two outs disagree completely. It would have been better with two outs because then you already don't, you have to get a hit again if there's two hours. And that's why this was so bad because it made it there be two outs. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's a horrible decision. And then just the fact that Garber would have driven in both runs that that just really, Negron's got to be better. He's got to be better. I will be honest. I don't know if Big Dumber ran through the sign. I would be hesitant to
Starting point is 00:18:19 Maybe I should before just bashing to grow, and I should check. Yeah, but they're either way, somebody screwed up. Somebody made a mistake, and it really almost killed the Seattle Mariners today. Because right after that, Mitch Garvers does hit a sharp single. Randy or Rosarana scores from second and scores one to make it 3-1 instead of 4-1. And then they intentionally walk, Cole Young, and then Ben Williams strikes out. So you go into the bottom of the 10th inning up by two. Carlos Vargas comes in, gets Josh Smith to ground out.
Starting point is 00:18:56 But then this is the other situation I'm going to talk about. When you're pitching to Corey Seeger, you could tell Carlos Vargas was trying to stay away from him, almost like unintentionally, intentionally walking him. Sure. Gets to 3-0, throws a strike, and then on the 3-1 pitch, Corey Seeger just absolutely tattoos one to the opposite field. dude's a really good hitter i'm not even blaming vargas but if you are going to not pitch to him
Starting point is 00:19:22 then just walk it like straight up like if you're just like i hate the trying to be careful sort of thing and you saw this happen a couple times of bruce bocce they got cald a two oh in the next inning uh and then they said all right i'm not even going to deal with it enough's enough to go to first i'm not even going to throw you something to hit and that's exactly what they should have done in this situation in my personal opinion so it's a tough one because the But the risk there is is that you are putting the tying run on first base. And it does set up some oops-a-dazi situations. The problem is that Marcus Simeon, Alder respect, I know he gets the slap,
Starting point is 00:20:02 you know what hit to win the game yesterday. He's not course. Adoles Garcia is not a bad baseball player, even though he's numbers are pretty bad. It's different. It's just different. Corey Seeger's just kind of a different level. I would have been fine with the unintentional. intentional walk there. And as soon as you fell behind, you should have just said, all right,
Starting point is 00:20:22 let's let Marcus Simeon beat us. Let's let him beat us again. Let's let Adoles Garcia beat us. And again, this is not hindsight. It is just hard to fathom. And it wasn't even a bad pitch. Like Corey Seeger just did a very nice job. By the way, at first I thought Julio was going to get that ball. And then I saw, oh, it went like 15 feet over said, never mind. But it was just, that's the thing about camera angles too, right? That you just can't really tell. But I have a hard time blaming Vargas for that. It was just a really nice job by a really good hitter, except for the fact that once you fell behind, you probably just should have said, enough's enough. Let's go after Simea and let's go after Garcia to get this done. Yeah, and I can't help but compare it to what Bruce Bochie did with Cal,
Starting point is 00:21:08 right? Yeah. I think it's pretty comparable in terms of offensive prowess compared to the rest of their lineup, what Cal is for the Mariners, and then what Corey Seeger is for the Texas Rangers. Not that either of these teams have bad lineups. I think the Mariners is pretty average. I'd say Texas right now is playing poorly, but I think overall they have a lot of talent. You saw how Boji was just like, all right, I'm letting someone else beat me today. And it ended up happening. Mitch Garver beat him, right? So this is one of those for hindsight. It looks better what Dan Wilson did. But I just don't know if I agree with the process. It's a tough one.
Starting point is 00:21:44 As Craig points out here, why would you put the tying run on? That's where it's like, okay, I sort of understand. I don't disagree. It's not completely, like, foolproof, like the send for me. Like, that's just there's no reason for that. But this one, there's a little more of a gray area at least. Yeah, it's, that's totally fair. I totally agree, Craig, that it's a tough decision, right?
Starting point is 00:22:05 Like, nine times out of 10, I would say don't do it. But just because of how little confidence I have and those guys sitting behind him right now, and how much I've seen Corey Seeger just kind of on one lately. I can't completely say that it was the right decision to pitch to him. Let's move to the 11th inning row. Yeah, let's do it. So J.P. Crawford's Bunt is one of my least favorite plays from Dan Wilson. And that could have been Crawford on his own.
Starting point is 00:22:34 Crawford has been known to, similar to Donovan-Solano, Jorge Polanco, make that decision. Hated that. Swing the bat. swing the bat and give yourself a chance to get a big inning there. It was a nice play by Josh Young on the ball, hit by Julio, a little bit of a leap there. I was actually thrilled that Ben Williamson didn't run on that situation because, you know, having a chance for your big guys to come up. Unfortunately, Luke Rayleigh, who did not play a very good baseball game outside of getting that
Starting point is 00:23:04 bun down. And you know what? It didn't end up being all that great because you end up, you took away a chance for a really beginning there by not being safe on that play. really disliked that decision. But I think we got to give some flowers to Trent Thornton, man. The job that he did, especially after, and by the way, loved the decision to walk Evan Carter, who was having an excellent game there,
Starting point is 00:23:26 to get that strike out of Josh Young and then to get the strike out of Higashioca, Higashioca, excuse me, that was massive. And that is why Trent Thornton is one of the most frustrating pitchers to me on the Seattle Mariners. The fact that he can do stuff like this, But I want to give him credit because his role has been really non-existent. He doesn't really know how he's going to be used. He's become more of a mop-up reliever than a high-leverage guy, even though he was the high-leverage guy right behind Munoz to begin the year.
Starting point is 00:23:57 That was a really nice job, really, really nice job. But I know we're running short on time, too, but we've got to talk about Mitch Garber. Yes. Let's get to the bottom half of the, or top of the 12th, excuse me. Sure. Yeah, yeah. So we got a Rosarana single. left. Rayleigh the third. Very good hold by Chris. Hey, he learned his lesson. I tweeted this out too.
Starting point is 00:24:18 They learned his lesson. They didn't send him there. Very, very good hold there. And then Solano, I'm still not quite sure if Rayleigh was going to be safe or not. I'm very surprised they didn't try to get the out at home there. I think you would have been out. I honestly thought he was going to be it worked out. But you know what? It didn't matter because Garver just, I haven't seen him hit a ball that hard in a long time. It may be the hardest ball I've seen him hit as a Seattle. Mariner. Just absolutely mollywop that thing. Yep. And once you went up 6.3, you just had to feel incredible.
Starting point is 00:24:50 You had to feel incredible. And the signs of life that Garver has shown, which is so funny, it looked like we were talking about Garver being DFAed a couple of weeks ago. And then we were looking at an injured list in, Harry Ford, you know, making the trip to Texas just in case. Nope. Mitch Garver is going to be here for a little while longer, folks. And, you know, you can be excited about that.
Starting point is 00:25:10 You can be disappointed about that. what can't be denied is that he came up absolutely massive in one of the biggest wins for the Seattle Mariners this year. You won the game. Like, if you're looking at WPA, I'm pretty sure he probably has the highest today. I would be surprised if he didn't. And that's win probability added, of course, because he hits the RBI in the 10th inning and then hits the two-run jack in the, or three-run jack. No, no, two-run jack, two-run jack in the 12th inning. What I've noticed about him lately, and I want to know if you've noticed this, too,
Starting point is 00:25:41 when he was struggling. I almost saw, like, when he would make his swing, he's looking down at the entire time. Almost like, you know, in the golfer, they say, take your swing, don't look up, let me look at the ball sort of situation. I've seen that super often from Garver. I don't know if it's a process thing that he's just trying to figure out, like, okay, work through the kinks and his swing right now. But my God, it seems like maybe it's a timing thing trying to get that lined up. I but it's seeming to come out of it just a little bit for me and and maybe that is a whole like you got to figure out your timing certain parts of your swing that you have holes in and it seems like he's he's starting to do that at least in the last couple of games yeah yeah and just feeling more comfortable driving the baseball he's not just looking to make contact he's actually looking to make solid contact a really nice job I wanted to end just with one thing that I did not like and I'm going to come across as okay boomer here So the run scores on that sack fly, and Randy a Rose Arena just does nothing with the baseball.
Starting point is 00:26:46 Don't do that, dude. Don't do that. Like, just make the throw home for S&Gs, man. I love Randy a Roserina. I think he's one of the most solid baseball players. I will be surprised if Dan doesn't have a talk with him after that one, because it wasn't, like, showing up the Texas Rangers, but, like, still a two-run game. It's still in a place where, you know, the ball can travel, like, make the throw. Make the throw, Randy.
Starting point is 00:27:14 You made some big moments. You had a really good road trip. Don't do that. Don't do that. Yeah. And there's been a couple moments of that. I remember, I think of Chicago in this Chicago series when there's a wild pitch and he's on third base and he's just the catcher kind of gave up and he's jogging home and then like
Starting point is 00:27:31 picks up the catcher's mask that gives it to him before he even touches home plate. Yeah. It's like, wow. And like, I will say there hasn't yet been a moment where he does that and it changes the outcome in some other way, right? He knows the moment where he needs to spread. Because when he needs to run hard, he runs flipping hard. Like he's one of the faster guys on the Mariners. He steals bases a bunch.
Starting point is 00:27:55 On that, I think it was the Scarver single in the 10th inning, he rounds third like book in it. Just like, I need to score this run. So he, I get it's a sense thing. and I totally agree, like, there's going to be people who don't like that, that you play the game hard no matter what every single time. But he is the best at knowing when he has to versus knowing when he can kind of back it off a little bit. But I totally, I get the frustration on that sense. It's just, it's not a good look.
Starting point is 00:28:25 And I don't want people to hate Randy or Rosarina for at all. He's been really good a lot of two days. I don't want people to hate him for the wrong reasons. Like that just gives ammunition to bad fans to claim blah, blah, blah, blah, just, Just make the throw. You're not going to get him, you know, but there was no reason to showboats the wrong word, but not take the play seriously. It's my only issue. Don't do that, Randy. Yeah, I agree with that. Thanks guys for tuning in with us today. Marriers are back at it tomorrow. I think they're back home as well.
Starting point is 00:28:56 Yeah, four games against Kansas City.
