Locked On Mariners - Daily Podcast On the Seattle Mariners - MARINERS POSTCAST: Seattle Mariners top San Diego Padres with Cal Raleigh hitting 50TH HOMER

Episode Date: August 26, 2025

Anders and Chris look at the first of the three-game set against the San Diego Padres for your Seattle Mariners. Bryce Miller was good outside of one inning, but it was a very bad inning. The offense ...came to life, and Cal Raleigh became the second Mariner to ever hit 50 homers in a season. Listener SurveyWe’ve put together a survey to learn more about our listeners and make your favorite podcasts even better. Starting point is 00:00:04 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day. Calroly gets 50. Jorge Polanco turns it up offensively, and the Mariners lineup scores nine runs. And after scoring 11 yesterday, it seems like the offense is swinging itself back around here at a perfect time. And the Mariners, of course, are Vetter Cup champions. I don't know who cares about that.
Starting point is 00:00:42 But we'll say it anyway. Why not? It's another occurrence that happens today. This is your Mariners postcast, Anderson Hurst, Christopher Crawford, with you. To my left, we're here hanging out right after every single Mariner baseball game. Really appreciate you guys coming and spending some time with us as Mariner fans. We're back on a winning street, Chris Crawford. What are your thoughts?
Starting point is 00:01:04 It was interesting that the one. When they fall behind 4-1, I am thinking, boy, am I stupid? Like, did I say a bunch of stuff about the get-right game and it's going to make me look like an absolute moron? Well, I'm still a moron, but for it's a different reason, I loved this one. I loved it. And the big thing for me is what you just mentioned about that you followed up 11 runs with 9, right? Now, does it help that they have faced a pitcher who I don't think. think the Padres are looking back on the J.P. Sears era with fondness so far.
Starting point is 00:01:42 Yeah, he has been doing that great with them. If you take a look at those numbers, it hasn't been so good. And I think that might just be the Mason Miller trade more than the J.P. Sears trade. If I'm being completely keeping it 100 with the kids. Hey, there you go. With the accent and everything. Thank you so much. By the way, seeing the Vetter Cup logo on the top right, I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:02:04 I'm a content with old band, but it's just. It's just bad. I don't hate Pearl Jam, but like, come on, guys. I'm not going to drop an F-bomb. I promise. Spending wheels. He's referencing you doing that last time. Well, he asked me to do it a couple of times ago, too, to be fair.
Starting point is 00:02:23 He asked me to show my nipple last time. Oh, okay. Did you? No. Okay. I said if we win the World Series, I will. Oh, my gosh. I will.
Starting point is 00:02:32 I almost said to that I'll pierce something, but I'm not going to have. I really like this win. I thought there were solid moments from every aspect of the team. There were also some not so good moments from every aspect of the team as well. True. It wasn't a perfect game by any means. No, but these are the type of games you have to win. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:53 Have to win. And you especially need to win these games just to real quick. The fact that you have the Astros flying the Rockies, the fact that you have the Yankees playing the nationals, The fact that you have not a lot of help coming from, oh, you've got a nice little alfalfa in the back there. Yeah, I know. That's why I was a little upset that I didn't wear my hat, but it's okay.
Starting point is 00:03:15 I like it. No, I used to you look handsome as heck. I just think you have to win games like this. And this is, this feels like the start of something, right? This feels like the start of one of these, another one of these win streaks. You've won three of four now. You're back to 10 games over five. I believe. Yep. Yep. And you see a special moment too with the second ever Seattle Mariner to hit 50
Starting point is 00:03:42 home runs. It's pretty crazy, man. And Goldsmith's going through the stats throughout the game. Just the 33rd person ever to do it, which is crazy to me, that's not a lot of people. It's not. For how many people have played the game of baseball. Oh my goodness. Yeah. I mean, just, I mean, on every roster right now, there are. are 780 people. And we've had 26 person rosters since what, 2021, I believe, something along those lines. Something like that, yeah. So multiply that. Oh, and then go back another 100 flipping years too, right? Like, that's so crazy to be the 33rd person ever. I wonder how many I could name. If we had more time, I would probably try to name all of them. But I know that you're-
Starting point is 00:04:30 We'll say that for another time. Maybe our 50th stream or something like it. Yeah, there you go. We've done way more than 50 streams. Let's start with the start, Chris Crawford. So here's the thing. If you take away one inning, I thought Bryce Miller was really good today.
Starting point is 00:04:47 But if you take away Shaquille O'Neal's height, he wouldn't be a great NBA basketball player. So you can't really say that he was good because that second inning was rough, pumpkins, right? Like, by the way, I'm saying right too much. That's one of the things I've noticed lately as I've been saying it a lot. So I'm going to do my best.
Starting point is 00:05:08 Yeah. Yeah. It almost feels Canadian-esque. I'm blaming Ian Freness, who I'm hosting for, by the way, tomorrow, 1 to 3, KJR, 93.3 FM. Outside of that second inning, he was good. He, the secondary stuff looked good. The command looked pretty good.
Starting point is 00:05:26 You just can't leave pitches where you do to a particularly like Gavin Sheets and then the one to Fernando Tatis that was just absolutely blistered out to center field with another home run to Jake Cronomworth in between. Overall, though, it's kind of weird. Like this is back-to-back innings games, excuse me, of five innings of four-run baseball. But I felt encouraged from both of these Bryce Miller starts. I feel he's on the precipice of getting there. I will also admit that I had a reactionary moment when.
Starting point is 00:06:00 and the second inning was going on, and it was bad, right? What was your reactionary moment? Yeah, you have to start, if Miller is this, at some point you're going to have to start considering skipping your fifth starter, because you have enough days off and have enough quality in your big board that you have to at least consider it. I will say you're holding off on that now, right? There was enough good over the other four innings today from Bryce Miller that you're not doing that,
Starting point is 00:06:37 but it's something that you might have to think about if you keep getting these five-inning four-run starts. Sure. I will wait until I see if Luis Castillo bounces back before I jump on that bandwagon because if he's just as bad, then you could say that about him, too. So if the other ones are that much better, then yes. And what I've seen from Logan and I still believe George is fine. Obviously, Brian Wu's been there and I still believe Castia will bounce back. So I don't think it's out of the picture. But I'm not, I don't know, maybe it's just that we had such a bad stretch of pitching that like Bryce Miller's,
Starting point is 00:07:20 same thing that he was been giving you all year long, now doesn't look as bad. You know what I mean? Sure. It does. When you have offense like the Seattle Mariners do compared to when he first got hurt, that's a great point. That's a really good point that, like, you can get away with five innings of four-run baseball from your starter.
Starting point is 00:07:39 It's bad. For those of you who they love when I do my ERA stuff, that's a 7.20 ERA, right? That's not the best. So he's got to pitch better. I'm also extremely curious what he would look. like out of the bullpen. I would too. Because that stuff, I'm excited to see what
Starting point is 00:08:02 Amerson Hancock's going to look like. I was about to bring that up to you. Maybe that's another episode time because we have a lot to get to today. Mariners win this one, nine to six. And the other thing about Bryce Miller's start that I want to point out is it matters who you do it against, right?
Starting point is 00:08:18 This is a really good Padres team. And I think five innings of four-run baseball. Also, it matters what situation you do it in as well. when you score six runs at the time. I think maybe it was five when he left the game. Did he get the win? I don't know. You did.
Starting point is 00:08:36 Yeah, okay. So, like, you know you have five runs. I realize, like, yes, you still would rather have the six innings of two runs or three runs or whatever. But, you know, you're pitching to your situation, so to speak. And like I said, this is a really good Padres lineup. The ball was kind of really traveling today. Are they juice in the balls for Cal Raleigh's home runs? No, I think what's happening right now is that we need to start burning styrofoam, folks.
Starting point is 00:09:05 We need to start doing whatever we can to keep making these temperatures come out here because the ball just flies. And I joked on social media that some of you want to save the planet. I want 11 to 8 baseball games for my grandma. So I think it's worth it. I think it might be worth it to just go ahead and burn some styrofoam. and do what you got to do because that ball was jumping tonight, jumping. And all those were bad pitches and none of those home runs were like skyscrapers, but you just saw how quick it got out.
Starting point is 00:09:39 Yeah. Yep. Why do we do this? Well, we'll give some love to our sponsors. Chris Crawford will switch his mic to the correct one. And we will go talk about the offense on the other side. Does that sound good? You like how it did that.

Welcome back to the Mariners postcast with Anderson Hurst, Christopher Crawford, with you. Mariner's win this 196, secure the Vetter Cup championship. so to speak. I don't know why this is such a big deal, but okay, yay. But more importantly, they win the first game of the series and get it to a game and a half once again of the Houston Astros and the A.L. West. Lots of things. Maybe do some scoreboard watching later tomorrow,
Starting point is 00:12:49 but you're taking care of your own business first, and that's what I love that the mergers are doing right here. Offense is the story of this one. Bryce Miller was okay, but Cal Rale hits 50. We kind of did a wax poetic yesterday about Cowellie season. Is there anything more you want to add so far? I mean, it's just such a special accomplishment. And we talked about it earlier in the show that reaching 50 homers is just, you can't fluke into it. I understand that there have been some players who have hit 50 homers who aren't necessarily considered the crown jewels of baseball and have also been accused of things. But it's really hard.
Starting point is 00:13:31 It's really hard. And it's something that it's not just the strength. It's not just the good swings. It's also about the durability. The back that he's in the lineup, every gosh dang day is special. And I saw a lot of you talking about it in the chat. And again,
Starting point is 00:13:47 we really appreciate everybody showing up. He's within reach. He's in reach of 62. He's in reach of time. or beating the American League home run championship. And the fact, every game then he hits one, you're going to feel a little more confident that that's a real possibility. And 13 more in 30 games is a lot.
Starting point is 00:14:12 It's a lot, a lot. It's 70 homer pace. But he's been there. He's done it. He has absolutely gone on these types of runs. And what is this now? Like four homers in the last three games? I know it's three homers in the last two because he hit two yesterday.
Starting point is 00:14:29 But by the way, real quick, apologize for yelling dumper as loud as I did when I came in the chat yesterday. I just had so much fun doing it, though. I mean, I'm sure you did. I really liked it. I don't think anyone else liked it, but I really, really liked it. The offense today, though, was really good. And if not for the 50 homers, we'd be talking about how good Jorge Palau. Yes, we would.
Starting point is 00:14:53 Absolutely. Just the triple short of the cycle, which, again, is like being just 10 inches short of being an NBA center. I'm like there is some doing that comparison again. But he was really good today. And I thought when he got the 5-4 lead, that double down the line to score those two runs is when I was like, oh, they're going to win this game.
Starting point is 00:15:14 Yep. They're going to win this game. I was not confident when it was 5-4, not confident whatsoever. So when he added that insurance, I felt really good about this game. but there were a bunch of guys who swung the bat well today. Obviously, big dumper with the Homer.
Starting point is 00:15:33 Mitch Garver had two really good walks today, really good walks today. Designated Walker, Mitch Garver. Yep, JP Crawford drives in a couple of runs. He actually kind of drove in three. One of them was with a double play, so he doesn't get it. But nice to see a couple of knocks from him. Julio with the opposite field single, but I'd like to see him drive the baseball a little bit more.
Starting point is 00:15:57 And Josh Taylor was really good today, too. The overall offense today. Was anyone bad? I'm trying to think. Suarez, maybe. Still get the walk, scores a run. Randy wasn't so good. Yeah, that's true.
Starting point is 00:16:11 It gets a head. I guess the top. I will also say, we probably are going to do this too much that we're going to note Aeohenio Suarez's defense. That might be the worst plan. seen from a Seattle Mariner this year defensively. Oh.
Starting point is 00:16:27 The pirouette throw that went, um, I, I thought for a second, Jaila Milro was playing third base for the Seattle Mariners because it was just that off. Like it was, I don't know why he's making that play, to be honest with you either.
Starting point is 00:16:42 Thank goodness they had a four run lead because it ends up not mattering. But you're going to notice that stuff. You're going to notice the. Oof-Magofs that Suarez makes defensively. And there aren't. have not been a ton. There have not been a ton. There's no way you could possibly suggest that he's a better defensive player than Ben Williamson right now. You also couldn't possibly suggest that Ben Williamson is a 20th of the offensive player, I mean, O'Swaris is. So, but you are going to notice that stuff. And it's why
Starting point is 00:17:11 I think Ben Williamson has to be one of the call-ups. I do think that he has to be one of the guys as a potential defensive replacement for that type of stuff. Because, man, you can't. If that was a close game, we would be screaming about that play. But it worked out. Yep. I am more confident than you are. I know you're going to us as far as third base. To be fair, I didn't actually see the throw from third.
Starting point is 00:17:41 But I've been pleasantly surprised at his defense up until now. I know that people are saying that that was a bad throw. I saw all the discourse on social media. And I've seen the comments here on our right hand side of the screen. So everyone's like, bring Ben Williamson back. Suarez sucks. Guys, come on.
Starting point is 00:17:59 Come on. I would rather, number one, Ben Williamson get everyday reps and AAA. And I think you get more value from someone like a Leo Rivas coming up. So you can play multiple positions, be your backup shortstop, yada, yada, yada. By the way, I guess that's Cole Young now. I'm not sure how that would work out.
Starting point is 00:18:19 Anyways, let something to think about for the future. We, mostly offensive, good stuff today. I want to talk more about Jorge Polanco because he's been, I think one of the biggest litmus tests for me with the Seattle Mariners is when Jorge Polanco is playing well, the team plays well. It's weird, isn't it? He is kind of, this phrase gets overused, but he's kind of an X factor in this lineup. Because you're going to give what you to get from Cal.
Starting point is 00:18:52 He's having an MVP. and we talked about how great he is for so long now, and it's still amazing. I'm not saying that I'm getting any sort of taking it for granted. I'm truly amazed by what he does every single day. Julio is kind of coming back down to Earth a little bit after his hot stretch, but he's still getting on base, making plays, getting quality hits, taking good pitches.
Starting point is 00:19:16 Randy's up very big, been up guys, Naylor Suarez added in as well. You're going to get pretty much consistent. It's been pretty consistent in minus maybe one of the road trip, right? Polanco, man, when he is on, his offense is a different animal. It's a completely different animal. Like, I'm sorry, you saw what it was today. You scored nine runs. He had a good day yesterday as well.
Starting point is 00:19:41 That contributes to the 11 runout versus against the 80s. I don't know, man. He's an absolute X factor in this team. And again, looks like, can't hold his own defensively, I should say. I'm not saying he looks great, but he can play a second. Real quick, Anders, there's some stuff about your audio being choppy. It's a YouTube thing. It's not Anders.
Starting point is 00:20:02 There's stuff going on right now with YouTube streaming that probably my audio is cutting out and cutting in a little bit right now, too. But nope, it's just one of those things where sometimes YouTube has 80,000 streaming at some time. Yeah, yeah. You can hear me perfectly fine too, right? Yeah. So it's, it's, it's, it's, just rewind. It's kind of that litmus test. He is kind of that guy when you feel a lot more confident when Jorge Polanco is confident.
Starting point is 00:20:33 You know what I mean? And I'll go with my unsung hero as Josh Naler, but you could probably go with Polanco as unsung in this game just because, yeah, the focal points, and it should be on big dump in the 50th home run. But man, oh man, they do not win that game without Jorge Polanco. But the unsung moment to me, 4-4 game, I believe, two outs, runners on first and second.
Starting point is 00:21:01 And that line single, also, my goodness gracious, watching Julio Rodriguez run is just so fun. He's so flipping fast. The way a lot of guys, that's a close play. Not with Leo. Not with Leo. It's really nice to see Josh Nailor's swinging the bat
Starting point is 00:21:20 a lot better as of a little. Yeah. think I'm pretty confident that Nair is going to be just fine offensively for the rest of the year. Suarez, I think so, too. You're going to get, he's not going to be the player that he was right before you got him in Arizona. But what he is now is, I think, the guy that's going to hit a homer every couple of games. He's going to get on base probably at least once a game, play average. hopefully that is just a whoopsie doops
Starting point is 00:21:57 and it's worth putting out Anders he immediately basically apologized for the pro too he said that's my bad type of thing six to nine score nice nice mirrors win this one nine to six as Chris pointed out
Starting point is 00:22:21 anything else for unsung I will say another unsung thing was I loved how Matt Brash battled today because that was spooky. And if you guys want to go see something funny, watch Matt Brash's reaction to when Gavin Sheed's ball goes foul because he has a very come-to moment there. And for him to be able to get out of that without giving up any runs, you know, and there's somebody who's mentioned the closure mentality a few times here, but Matt Brash is tough. Matt Brash is a tough, you know what, and this bullpen has a chance to be, you know,
Starting point is 00:23:01 Edward Bizarro gives up the Homer, but I thought he looked good today too. Gets the three strikeouts and nice job by Caleb Ferguson. I thought the bullpen pitched, they end up giving up two runs today, but one of them unearned, and then one of them on a solo ding-dong from Ramon Lurion, who probably should have been a Seattle Mariner for being completely honest. But I was impressed with all of the aspects of the game today. There were some nice defensive plays. Yep.
Starting point is 00:23:26 There was some clutch pitching. I loved how Miller had shut down innings. He had shut down innings after the Mariners got back into that game. It was 4-1. They get the two-run Homer. It's 4-3, shuts them down. They get the run to tie it up. 4-4 shuts them down.
Starting point is 00:23:41 That was very encouraging to me. Yep, yep. I totally agree. I honestly take more positives from Bryce Miller starts today than negatives. I know that the- 100% agree. I know the outcome isn't perfect. But considering that I think every starting or every pitcher, yeah, Clim Starrs totally agree,
Starting point is 00:24:02 every pitcher that pitch for the Mariners today at least struggled a little bit. Because Bizarro gives up the home run. Brash kind of struggled through. Munoz wasn't perfect in the ninth inning. I think that's just more of a testament to how good San Diego's lineup is more than anything else. And some people pointed out that they haven't scored a ton of runs. They pass the eye test. They absolutely are a lineup that passes the eye test.
Starting point is 00:24:26 They have had some moments where they have really scuffled. In particular, the same way that Julio kind of, you know, they've talked about, like, we go as far as he goes. They go as far as Fernando Tatis Jr. goes. It's true. And for a while, Fernando Tatis Jr. sucked out loud. Talent, I, there might be three more talented baseball players on planet than Fernando. It's a really good question. It's a really good question.
Starting point is 00:24:54 I probably put Tatis slightly ahead of them. The only thing I would say is that because I think Fernando Tatis Jr. would be a fine center fielder, but it's close. Anyway, they are, this is a good lineup. There's a reason why this team is battling the Los Angeles. I think of the best team in the NOS, personally. I would not go there, but I would say. say that they are the second best team in the national league.
Starting point is 00:25:21 So, you know, that's high praise for sure, right? I hope we get that NLCS. And I hope that it's one of those teams facing the Seattle Mariners in the World Series afterwards. Phillies are better than both of them. Anyways, moving on. Mariners win this one. We'll see you guys tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:25:40 Really appreciate it. Again, if you experience a little bit of lag issues, you can rewind and watch anything you missed. and it was excellent analysis by myself, I will say. It's not always there, but it was that time. We'll talk to you guys tomorrow. Another 640 start. What have we got?
Starting point is 00:25:58 Brian Wu on the mound, I believe, tomorrow. Could be a lot of guys. Could be a lot of guys. We are looking at, this is great. Yeah, tomorrow is Pestio versus Dillon Cease. Yeah. Yes. All right.
Starting point is 00:26:16 Really appreciate that. Hopefully, Castillo can bounce back. Castillo at home, I can trust hopefully, please, please. Don't cease to spend meh lately. So we'll see kind of how he bounces back there as well. So another big one tomorrow. Mariners win this one nine to six. We'll talk to you guys tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:26:31 Really appreciate it. Like the video if you haven't already. And we'll talk to you guys after the game.
