Starting point is 00:00:02 You can't waste performances like that, guys. This is now two straight days where one player has had pretty historic, I don't want to say historic for yesterday with Julio with two home runs, but you're wasting very good performances from these guys. And Emerson Hancock was so good today, and the Mariners end up losing both games. Let's talk about it on the Mariners Postcast. This is the Mariners Postcast.
Starting point is 00:00:30 Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day. Welcome everyone to the Mariners Postcast. Anderson Hurst here with you. Mariners lose another one to the Royals. They have secured the series loss. They have a chance to salvage it tomorrow. They go to 16 and 18 on the season.
Starting point is 00:00:55 Three to two is the final score. Emerson Hancock was absolutely outstanding. The best start from a mariner pretty easily this year. and one of the best I've seen in the last few years. 14 strikeouts, no walks, 21 whiffs, just so many good things about Emerson Hancock starting. He leaves with the lead, and the Mariners end up losing the game for multitude of reasons. Number one, you can't add on offensively when you have multiple opportunities to.
Starting point is 00:01:29 A pretty big base running blunder that we'll get to. some bad defense once again and a blown safe. And that equals a loss, even though your starting pitcher went out and absolutely dominated an offense in the Kansas City rolls that has been pretty good this year. So it's a disappointing one, guys. It's a disappointing one. I need to change my background.
Starting point is 00:01:53 There we go. Hand-cookin, mistakes, and unsung. We just continue to make mistakes, guys. It's a team that can't get out of its own way. right now, unfortunately. It feels like every time you feel like they're kind of jumping out of their funk a little bit, they go and have two games like they had the last two days. And, you know, I realize it's a long season and everything,
Starting point is 00:02:18 but they're not playing good baseball. They're just not. There's a multitude of things that go wrong today. And there's a couple, you know, big moments in the game that, you know, you just continue to not do the right things. And I don't want to say do the fundamentals, because it's not even just fundamentals. It's just what everyone does.
Starting point is 00:02:38 It's what everyone does. Defense continues to be an issue, and not just from the infields. It's starting to leak its way to the outfield to Julio Rodriguez, guys. We need to have a conversation about center field. I'm not saying he should be taken out of that position. But he's not a good center fielder right now. He absolutely is done.
Starting point is 00:03:00 He has a good day at the plate, gets two hits, including a double. Good to see that he's hitting a ball in the first couple months of the season for the first time in his career, really. But maybe he talked to the baseball gods and was like, hey, if you let me hit, I'll suffer some defense. And it really, it looks like he's suffering defensively in center field because I don't know if the run would have scored without the error in the ninth inning there from him. and it might not have mattered because he was on second base anyways, but it's just, it was bad from Julio because it just, it was not a good time.
Starting point is 00:03:45 And it's one of those one positions that I actually felt comfortable with defensively going in this year. And you had a lot of questions at third base, set shortstop. Second basis has been answered. Thankfully for Cole Young for being a good defensive second baseman. First base is fine. Randy, we'll talk about him in a sec, but he makes a diving catch.
Starting point is 00:04:09 He'll make some plays out there. He's still not a good, very good defensive left fielder, but oh well. And then the lack of Cal. So you've lost Matt Brash and Cowellie in the last two days because I would be surprised if they say that Cal Raleigh doesn't go on the IL based off. of his lack of availability there late in the game. If there's something really, really wrong with him, or if he was really available, he would have pinched for Mitch Garver there
Starting point is 00:04:36 late in the game and the extra innings. And if he's not available, he should go on the IEL to give you the extra roster spot. So I am worried, guys. I'm starting to get worried based off of how the team's playing, based off of how they're losing these games, and based off the injuries. It's something that we're not really used to talking about here in the last couple of years. Let's start with the good. Let's start with the start.
Starting point is 00:05:00 Emerson Hancock, guys. Oh, man. I will fully admit, hand in the air, before today, I was a little hesitant to really say Hancock had secured a spot in the rotation. I really had. I really was. Just based off of his, you know, career trajectory and, He'd only shown a few starts of like really good stuff. That all gets put out the window today.
Starting point is 00:05:29 What I saw today was a borderline top end of the rotation guy who can get swing and miss stuff, who doesn't walk people, who looks confident on the mound, who has his secondary stuff working, and he got swing and misses from everyone. And I, like I said, the Royals offense has been really, really good this year. So that's a good offense to kind of look like you're dominating against. I am fully on board the Emerson Hancock train. And like I said, I'll fully admit that I wasn't until today. This showed it.
Starting point is 00:06:07 It's great to see. That's a big positive from today, even though you get the loss. And in Mariners fashion, he goes 14Ks, no walks in seven innings, and you end up losing the game. It's just crazy to me. So yeah, it's a tough one. Let's quickly talk about the offense. They, I think it was seven of the ten innings.
Starting point is 00:06:34 I have to double check. But I think it was seven of the ten innings. They sent the minimum to the plate. And when you think about how many times they had the bases loaded and you still send the minimum to the plate, that is a bad offensive day. That is a bad offensive day. I'm just looking at the box floor right now.
Starting point is 00:06:52 I'm looking at, you know, who was specifically kind of a culprit. You get two hits from Julio, like I said. A hit from JP, a hit from Luke Rayleigh, a hit from Garver, and a hit from Revos. And no one else did anything else. Randy gets the walk. Revos gets an extra walk as well. But a total of seven hits. And it just, it felt way less than that, I think.
Starting point is 00:07:16 Maybe it's just because later in the game, when it was 2-1 for the majority of this game, the Mariners kind of eased off the gas pedal once again. But the big moment in the game, guys, after the Emerson Hancock start, and after, you know, you took the lead with the wild pitch, Leo Rivas comes in, I want to talk about the Randy Rosarena situation. All right, I want to get the exact spot. Yeah, here we go. It's the fifth inning.
Starting point is 00:07:52 Bottom of the fifth. Mitch Garver strikes out to begin the inning. Liu Rivas hits his one single. J.P. Crawford hits a single. And then Julio Rodriguez single. So you get three straight singles to load the bases. All right. And then you get the wild pitch, good base running from Leo Rios to score on that play,
Starting point is 00:08:09 to take the lead two to one with Josh Naler at the plate. Josh Nailer strikes out. And then Randy Rosarino walks, keep in mind, with the wild pitch, everyone moved up at base. so first base was open. Randy gets on base. It was a good walk. I was telling him he, in my group chat,
Starting point is 00:08:27 he's locked in at the plate right now, guys. It was a good at bat from him. And then, oh, my God, you get three balls to Cole Young. And Cole Young has had a rough couple of days offensively, but his road trip was so dang good. I was still pretty confident with him in that situation. And Randy Rosaranda forgets how many balls and strikes there are.
Starting point is 00:08:50 and gets caught between first and second base. There's two outs. He gets picked off inning over. First things first. Absolute bonehead play from Randy Rosalana. That's one of the worst base running mistakes I have ever seen live, period. I've seen some highlights of worse ones, but me watching the game while it happens,
Starting point is 00:09:13 that is as bad as it gets for me. Now, there were some questions regarding the no call on interference. And they talked about it on the broadcast too. Dan Wilson comes out to argue with the umpire. By rule, I think that's interference on Vinnie Pasquantino because the way it looks is Pasquantino has the ball.
Starting point is 00:09:40 He's chasing Randy down to second base. He throws it to second base. Randy turns to go back to first and runs into Vinny Pasquantino. And I'm going to think about what I'm saying here because with Dan Wilson, I think one of two things needs to happen. Either number one, you need to stick up for your player if you really believe, hey, that's interference. He needs to be safe. This inning needs to continue. If that's what you really believe and you're going out to argue that, get tossed and be pissed because that's a huge moment in this game.
Starting point is 00:10:21 if not, if you're just doing that because you're trying to, like, avoid a tough conversation with your player, you can't do that, right? So either you need to get tossed for arguing interference or you need to bench Randy or Rosarena. Okay. One of those two things needs to happen and neither of those two things happens. Now, I realize literally the next half inning, Randy Roserana makes it a great diving catch. Okay. And he wouldn't have made that catch if you had benched him.
Starting point is 00:10:49 I get it. but I just want to see a little more juice from my manager. Either, I am fine with going either way on this. I either think if you really believe that's interference, and I think by rule it is, even if it was still a boneheaded base running play from Randy Rosarena, you either need, you can't just be okay with what just happened. You can't.
Starting point is 00:11:12 And that's the vibe that I get from Dan Wilson in that situation. You either need to get tossed arguing interference, or you need to bench Randy or Rosarana. You can't be okay with everything that just happened. Because it, honestly, it ends up losing you the game. Now, you can look at it later. You have the 2-1 lead. Bizarro looks great in his eighth inning.
Starting point is 00:11:35 And then you get come out in the ninth inning. And let's actually, I'm going to take a quick break because I'm already past the time that I'm supposed to. And then we'll talk about the ninth inning and extra innings next on the Mariners Postcast. Mariners lose this one, three to two, and drop the 16 and 18 on the season. We'll be right back. The NBA playoffs are here and every possession matters. You're looking to get even closer to the action. Fandole is a great offer to get you started.
Starting point is 00:12:07 Right now, new customers can bet $5 and get $150 in bonus bets if your first bet wins. That's right. Turn five bucks into $150 in bonus bets just for getting started. Starting point is 00:14:22 Welcome back, Mariners Postcast, Anderson Hurst with you. Mariners lose this one three to two. They dropped to 16 and 18 on the season. It felt like everything was kind of there after the road trip and you're ready to kind of hit the ground running coming home. You've lost two straight now against the Royals, a team who has been good as of late, but it's two winnable games, guys. So just feels like there needs to be, you know, a little, I don't know, kick in the butt.
Starting point is 00:14:46 It felt like a perfect situation would have been to bench Randy or Rosarina. And it doesn't even have to be a huge, like, hey, you know, you're no longer our left fielder. It's like, hey, you sit out the rest of this game. You made a mistake. And I'm sure Randy would admit that he made the mistake and be willing to apologize to his teammates for it. You've got to set a tone, send a message that that's not good enough. We need to get rolling here. And I think, honestly, that lack of desical nature plays out in the ninth inning as well.
Starting point is 00:15:17 because Andres Munoz comes in for the save. Salvador Perez hits a single. Then they pinch run for him with Lane Thomas. Carter Jensen strikes out. And then Caglione singles on the line drive to Julio Rodriguez. And he overruns it, unfortunately. And it turns into Caglione getting a triple. I didn't realize.
Starting point is 00:15:44 I totally forgot that Lane Thomas was on first base in that situation. Oh, no, no, he wasn't because of the Bach. Oh, that's a whole other discussion. Yeah, Andres Munoz gets a Bach, and then Lane Thomas goes to second. Caglion hits a single to the center field. Julio just lets it go right under his glove, just a lack of concentration. Like, it's hard to describe it as anything other than that.
Starting point is 00:16:08 And Caglion gets to third. Fortunately, he doesn't score. So, again, I don't know if it really matters that much. in the end in this specific game. Wayne Thomas probably would have scored anyway from second base on the single. He's a fast runner. But still, just watching this game, you can see that there's still not like a, hey, we're in midseason form.
Starting point is 00:16:34 We're doing the things that we need to do to win baseball games right now. There's just a lack of dazical nature to the way these guys are playing baseball right now. I think that comes a little bit from the manager. I think there needs to be a little bit of a tone zone. set, so to speak. And especially now with Cal Raleigh, we'll see what ends up happening. I still have yet to see anything on his status. It just, I just don't know, you know, exactly. Apparently, to Ryan Davis, he's dealing with general soreness that required imaging. So I don't know what that means. If he's generally sore, I feel like he would have been available in the pinch hit
Starting point is 00:17:11 situation in the 10th inning. We're going to get to that here in a quick second, too. I've got to run through a quick couple of things real quick. But yeah, that ninth inning, Munoz wasn't great, but he wasn't awful either. It's not like he was, you know, missing middle, middle or anything. They put a couple good swings on it. Salvador Perez, man, he's a Hall of Famer, probably in my book. If you look at his, you know, complete honors list in Wikipedia,
Starting point is 00:17:35 that screams Hall of Famer to me. That was just a great hit for him to get things going. They pinch run for him. And, you know, Caglion, good for him for putting the barrel on the ball. but 10th inning, you have Cooper Chriswell coming into pitch. You get the strikeout. Actually, oh, yes, before the strikeout. Michael Massey starts the inning on second base in the 10th inning.
Starting point is 00:18:07 Mariners don't get anything in the bottom of the ninth, by the way. One, two, three. Michael Massey starts the inning at second base. Cooper Quistrell makes a pitch. Mitch Garver notices that Massey's leaning heavily towards third base. I don't know if he was trying to bait him into a throw, but Garver throws to second. Massey instantly goes to third, and it's a free 90 feet in 10th inning situation. And it's just, you can't have that. I realize that, you know, there's a chance.
Starting point is 00:18:39 He kind of does lean back towards second base if you watch the replay a little bit. So maybe he wasn't trying to bait him, but it's either Mitch Garver needs to throw a third base and be extra safe, not try and get the out, just keep him at second base. Or you need to throw a dart to JP and JP needs to throw a dart to third to get him out because you should not allow that extra free 90 feet. They didn't bunt. They didn't even try and sacrifice. It wasn't even a true steal. You just baited Mitch Garver into throwing to second base and took third base for free. I just, I, that's a tough play, honestly.
Starting point is 00:19:17 And it's, that's how they end up winning the game because you get the sacrifice fly from Mikel Garcia. And, and that's all they get. It's three, two, but the Mariners don't get anything in the bottom half of the 10th. It's, it's bad. Mitch Garver also has a terrible plate appearance with, with the guy on second bait, misses two just absolute cookies in the middle of the zone. And I'm not even I ask him to bunt there.
Starting point is 00:19:43 If it was someone else, maybe. But Mitch Garver's never been a bunt guy. So that's putting that conversation aside. You can't miss those pitches. He's laying it on a plate for you. You don't even have to like, oh, man, it's so frustrating to watch. There's something off with this team right now. I don't know if it's the injuries.
Starting point is 00:20:03 I just feel like there's something off about this team right now. hopefully Cal Raleigh's not out for a long period of time. Hopefully Matt Brash is not out for a long period of time. It's just a waste of an amazing night from Emerson, Hancock, and an amazing night to honor Randy Johnson as well. And as someone who didn't grow up watching him, because I'm a little bit past that time, he still is one of the guys where you just mentioned his name and conversations,
Starting point is 00:20:32 Randy Johnson, that is. And you get so many stories from anyone who watch. him pitch. And it was a good, good by the Mariners to honor him. Good, good speech. Good to have both 51s. I love that moment. And it felt like it was a perfect homage to him to have Emerson Hancocko out there and just absolutely deal tonight. But it's, it's just a waste. It's another wasted performance. Unfortunately, it's my second night in a row having that same post gas. I'm not super worried. I still think this team's the best team in the American League West. But I don't, I don't like the way they're playing baseball right now,
Starting point is 00:21:10 and that's just the way it is. 110 tomorrow. The Mariners can try and salvage the series against the Royals. I think it's a big one. They absolutely need to. You can't go off of your road trip, come back, and get swept by the Royals. Chris Bubik or Bubich, I don't know, versus Luis Castillo. So another kind of, all right, this is your chance, Castillo to kind of get things rolling here against the Royals.
Starting point is 00:21:37 so we'll see what ends up happening. I don't know. I'm frustrated, guys. It was a tough night. That's a kind of demoralizing loss in what was a fantastic pitching performance from Emerson Hancock. I'll talk to you guys tomorrow. 110 first pitch. Have a good one.
Starting point is 00:21:52 Go Mariners. Let's go get at least one win in this series.
