Starting point is 00:00:04 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day. Welcome to the Mariners Postcast. As I was mentioning that you guys didn't hear me, appreciate you letting me know in the chat. Shout out to all y'all. I wouldn't have known otherwise.
Starting point is 00:00:27 But Mike was, for whatever reason, it was muted. But what a Mariners baseball game? It just if yesterday was kind of the vintage Seattle Mariners, you know, strong pitching performance, but the offense wasn't completely there. You do get some timely hits. Today was the exact inverse of that where for whatever reason the Mariners played these types of games in the Midwest. Like I remember a couple years ago in Chicago and the wind was blowing directly out to center field and it was just one of those crazy games. This felt like one of those games as well where Brian Wu was not great at all today. And it just, the offense picks him up.
Starting point is 00:01:09 It's about as good of a team performance as you're going to get. And having everyone, almost everyone that took an at bat today got a hit. I think the only one that didn't, if you look at the box score, is Luke Rayleigh. And he only took one at bat. So, wow. Just a crazy baseball game. The Mariners win this one over the St. Louis Cardinals. I guess, honestly, me being muted for the first couple, you know, minute or so of this video was probably a good move on accident on my part because I was kind of speechless about what I wanted to say anyway.
Starting point is 00:01:39 But what a win. That is a massive win and a series win against the St. Louis Cardinals. Not only do you kind of get the bats awoken up a little bit. You have big games across the board from Julio Rodriguez, Cal Raleigh gets two hits, Josh Naylor gets two hits, Josh Nailer gets too hitch, Mitch Garver gets two hits. Cole Young gets three hits, including two extra base hits, like massive games across the board. But the biggest part of this game was three guys.
Starting point is 00:02:10 And that was Leo Rivas, Connor Joe, and Will freaking Wilson. Just like we all expected, guys. Just like we all expected. Yeah, I don't even know where to start because there's so many plays in this game where you could break it all down. But we're going to try to here. on the Mariners Postcast. I want to let you guys know that today's episode's brought to you by Game Time.
Starting point is 00:02:34 Download the GameTime app today. Create an account and use code locked on for $20 off your first purchase. Let's start with Brian Wu. Let's get the bad out of the way. We always start with the start. It wasn't good today. I wonder how much was the conditions. I won't speculate on juice balls or anything like that because, man, alive where there's
Starting point is 00:02:52 some hard hit contacts on both sides today. but what makes it me think it was mostly Wu is because honestly the bullpen after him was pretty dang good. Chris Will does give up the home run. I understand that. But Freer gets through two strong innings and Brash gets through his inning and then Munoz gets through his inning. So Wu was really the only one that hard struggled for the Mariners today. and I think it's a good example of him and his development process for a guy that's so fastball heavy. A lot of people would think, you know, the Cardinals don't have as high of a ceiling offensively than a lot of other teams. A fastball pitcher is going to kind of dominate them.
Starting point is 00:03:36 I actually tend to disagree with the team that's as contact dependent as St. Louis. They don't strike out very much at all. They just don't have many guys that can hit a lot of home runs, even though they did today. but they they can kind of zone in and make good contact on a lot of pitches. And when Wu is a little bit stubborn, kind of like early George Kirby is kind of what made me think about it, where he is just zoning in on one part of the plate, trying to just mix in fastball and two seamer and then a little bit with this slider slash sweeper. But he wasn't changing the eye level very well today.
Starting point is 00:04:13 And it looks like a guy that felt like he could just show up and throw a. fastball and then get through six innings. And unfortunately, like, that's just not the case. You're going to have to adjust. You're going to have to, you know, find some different pitches that work out for you. So I think this is just a learning moment for him. A good thing. A learning moment comes in a win, right?
Starting point is 00:04:32 So it's kind of a perfect scenario for the Mariners that get the win today. You do have to use a lot of your bullpen. It was something we talked about last night as well. So it's just the way it goes. But this is just a learning moment for Bridewam. I'm excited for him to, to kind of take the next step, and games like this are going to be exactly what he needs to do that.
Starting point is 00:04:54 I mean, that's just pretty much it. He gets through three innings, and he wasn't going to get through any more than that. So I think it was the right move to take him out. It gives up four home runs for only the second time in his career, I want to say, and it's only the fourth time, third time, excuse me, that he gave up more than three home runs. So just like we all expected,
Starting point is 00:05:14 I did Connor Joe, Will Wilson, and Leo Rivas getting the three biggest hits of the day, and then Brian Wu giving up four home runs. If you were to, you know, tell me that game script before this one started, I would have told you you were crazy because this game was crazy. All right. Let's honestly, like, there's too many, like, big moments in this game. I'm going to go through kind of top to bottom of the box score because I think this is a good time to do that with all the players that, you know, to have moments in this game,
Starting point is 00:05:44 it's going to be easier for me to remember if we do it by player versus by time in the game. So let's do that on the other side of the break here. On the Mariners Postcast, I was speechless, literally, during the first couple minutes of this. Thanks for tuning in. Who is your unsung hero? Mention it in the chat. We'll be right back with more on the Mariners Postcast. MLB season is back and you can feel it.
Starting point is 00:06:12 Fresh starts big expectations in that first crack of the bat, whether it's a breakout rookie or division race that goes down to the wire. there's nothing like being in the ballpark for it. The only problem, getting tickets can feel like a grind. Long queues, surprise fees, prices jumping at checkout. That's where there's game time. The Game Time app gives fans the advantage with constant innovation. It's how you unlock amazing tickets and experiences in just a few taps.
Starting point is 00:06:36 It's simple to use. The GameTime app means you 100% get authentic tickets delivered on time at the best price. And the best part is fees are included in the price you pay. what you see is what you pay period um one of my favorite things that they've added for this year is zone deals so you pick the section uh where you want to sit in the stadium and then you save even more money by having game time pick the exact seat you want to sit in i think it's perfect for when you're going to the game on your own you kind of want to choose the area of the ballpark you're sitting in and you can still save some more money just by having game time select the exact seat two taps and it's done
Starting point is 00:07:13 no stress no hidden fees just great seats in minutes that's what i'm It makes it easy to decide last minute to hit a game. Starting point is 00:07:40 My name's Anderson Hurst. Yeah, the Mariners win this one 11 to 9. If you were to tell me that Brian Wu goes three innings, nine hits, seven runs, all earned one strikeout and four home runs given up. I would have said, yep, Mariners lose this one, and it probably wasn't close. That's not the case. I want to give a quick shout out because we won't have time to talk about it, but I want to give a shout out to the bullpen and then how it was used today.
Starting point is 00:08:06 You know, we've had our fun, or not fun, but we've had our criticisms of Dan Wilson and his way of using the bullpen in the past. I think especially with all of your leverage guys going last night, your starter going through three innings, you're going to have to stretch. And I realized that Cooper Chriswalk does give up the two-run jack. I think that was to church. So that was kind of a moment where, you know, it's just one of those when your starter only goes three innings.
Starting point is 00:08:36 You're going to have to kind of live with that kind of stuff. But you do get Braschen Munoz to come in during the 8th and 9th, and they shut the door. Good to see them pitching well. I think Jose Ferre has a shout for unsung hero. my son agrees with me because you can hear him in the background probably. He's a big Jose Ferreira fan, as am I. Two innings, he does get some soft contact that get through for hits once again. But I love the way he's pitching right now.
Starting point is 00:09:04 I think once he kind of locates that slider a little bit better, he could be used as a high leverage guy. But I'm totally fine with him being a very middle reliever type right now because he can face righties and lefties. He's had success against both of them so far this year. So, yeah, let's get to. to the offense because that's the big story of today. I mean, let's just go down the box score here.
Starting point is 00:09:26 Rob Reff Snyder is one for three. He does have a strikeout, but he does get a nice hit as well. Luke Rayleigh pinch hits for him and is the only mariner batter that made a plate appearance that didn't get a hit today, which is crazy, 19 hits for the Seattle Mariners. And then Connor Joe Pence hit for Luke Rayleigh later in the game. I mean, let's talk about that situation really quick because I think that's going to be something where if this had gone a different way, I think we could easily be talking some different tones here about Dan Wilson and his decision making. So as I mentioned before,
Starting point is 00:10:03 he pinch hits Luke Rayleigh. I think it was in the sixth inning when the right-handed pitcher comes in. They have Jojo Romero in for the seventh inning, who is the lefty for St. Louis. They leave him in the eighth, and Luke Reilly comes up. They announced Connor Joe as the pinch hitter, and then that's when Oli Marmol goes to Brian. Or Brian is his name? Yes.
Starting point is 00:10:32 And that was one of those situations where I was like, oof, I don't know about this one, Dan. I think I'd rather Luke Rayleigh face off against Jojo Romero, better hitter against worst pitcher, than Connor Joe faced off against, O'Brien, who is their closer, who had been one of the best closers in baseball and just not as good of a hitter overall. Because either way, if he leaves Luke Grayley in there, it's going to be left on left.
Starting point is 00:10:59 If he brings Connor Joe in, Oli Mar-Moll is going to be the second guy to react every single time. So you're not going to get the platoon matchup you want. So having Connor Joe come in for their closer kind of seemed like a questionable situation. But man, Conor Joe, first pitch, prompts to him. A great hit, great at bat. and it ends up working out. You tie the game on a two-run single.
Starting point is 00:11:20 And then in the ninth inning, Leo freaking Rivas, man. That was a great at bat as well. He's struggled so far this year. And earlier in the game, when he bunted over, I was a little bit questionable on the bunt decision. As you guys know, I'm not a huge bunting fan. But in my head, I was like, well, if that was anyone but Leo Rivas, I would have been upset with the bunt,
Starting point is 00:11:42 but because I had zero faith in him to come through in that situation. I was like, okay, I'm fine with Rivas, bunting the two guys over. And that's what ended up leaving the two-run single for Connor Joe instead of just a one-run single. So it actually ends up playing perfectly. And then, of course, later in the game, it's Leo Rivas once again to come through with the bases loaded. And he absolutely does.
Starting point is 00:12:06 J.P. Crawford and Mitch Garver's score. And overall, just a great game from some guys that you don't expect. Will Wilson goes one for two with a blast on. his first swing as a Seattle Mariner. Good to see him. If he could be a decent third base option, that's going to be something to look out for. I'm not expecting him to be an everyday player whatsoever.
Starting point is 00:12:29 But, you know, if he can put a couple good games together, be another guy that can hit left hand of pitching because boy, the Mariners need it. And that's the other crazy thing about today. The Mariners score 11 runs against all 11 runs, I understand, in a game where a lefty starter made the start. And that's been the whole thing all years, much they've struggled against the Seattle Mariners.
Starting point is 00:12:51 They've struggled against left-handed pitching the Seattle Mariners. So that's something that is another huge part of this game. Julio gets three hits. I've been talking about him lately about not driving the baseball. That home run in the first inning was a great sight to see because that's the exact type of swing where you haven't been seeing a ton from with Julio. And even one of his outs today, he hit it for 110 straight to Mason win at short, that's great. I actually will take that all day every single day. It means he's driving
Starting point is 00:13:22 the baseball again. It's not as much ground ball city, but he's still getting three hits today as well. So that's a big kind of thing for him. Josh Naylor starting to turn it up a little bit. Of course, at the home run last night. It gets two more hits today. Randy or Rosarana continues to, you know, be consistent in the middle of that order. I think it's a perfect spot for him. J.P. Crawford, a little bit of a quiet day, but again, still, gets a walk and a hit scores a run one for four Mitch Garver looked really good today a couple good swings again two hits three runs scored for Mitch Garver which is great you're getting on base but I think my player the game today is Cole Young the dude gets three hits including a home
Starting point is 00:14:05 run that was had to be at least 420 feet and then my god his double was about six inches from being as dead center as you possibly could get but it was just a a rope that hit that center field wall. So good for Cole Young. I think both of the extra base hits were against lefties, too. So it's great to see him playing every day, him having success playing every day, and Dan Wilson having the wherewithal to leave him in the game in those moments. So guys, just an overwhelmingly great offensive performance from the Mariners.
Starting point is 00:14:41 I realize the Cardinals pitching staff isn't that great. But man, what, you score four runs against their closer who had given up nothing up until now. So I think there were moments in this game you could have easily folded. And, you know, okay, we won the first game of the series. He'd come in the second game. Brian Woo goes three innings, this just isn't our day. Let's get the series tomorrow. But man, now you leave yourself open for a great opportunity tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:15:07 We got Emerson Hancock taking the mound. He's going against Michael McGree. so that'll be a fun matchup for the Mariners once again in 1115 so we'll be with you guys right after the game here on the mariner's postcast but guys final thoughts about this one is like these are the types of games that really good teams win you're I think the Mariners are a better team than the Cardinals take take the records out of it it's too early in the season to really look at that kind of stuff um this is the type of game that good teams win when your starter doesn't have everything the offense finds a way to wake up you can talk about the all just say the conditions, whether that's the juice balls, whether that's, you know, the air being thin, being warm in St. Louis, whatever was making the balls fly around today, you were squaring up a lot of good stuff against a pitcher who had a pretty good year last year in Matthew Libretor. So I think it's just a great, great win for the Seattle Mariners. They take the series.
Starting point is 00:16:04 They have a chance of the sweep tomorrow. A great way to start the road trip. So hopefully they can do it. We'll talk to you guys again tomorrow. Sorry, I forgot to give you Monsung Hero. I kind of teased it a little bit before. Jose Ferrer going two innings when your starter only goes three innings is huge, especially when you used all your leverage guys yesterday.
Starting point is 00:16:22 I would have given Chris Well kind of thrown in the same boat because he also goes two innings, but he does give up the two-run Homer to kind of give St. Louis the lead, so I'll kind of leave him out of this one. But just in general, having guys that can cover multiple innings is such a big part of getting through games like this. So we'll talk to you guys tomorrow. Hopefully the marriage can get the sweep. Have a good one. 1115 first pitch Emerson Hancock, Michael McGreevy.
Starting point is 00:16:46 We'll talk to you then. What a week.
