Starting point is 00:00:04 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Well, it's great to be solo on a game like this where you can break down what I think is officially making the greatest catching season of all time from Mr. Cowroll. It's great to see him break the record. for most home runs by catcher. But honestly, it was probably going to be that way anyway. But I think today he officially passed it with the home run total beating Salvador
Starting point is 00:00:47 Perez, getting to number 49, with still over a month left in the season. Cal Raleigh is the story of today's game. But man, is it good to win a series that you're supposed to win? It's good to not have to have a nail biter where you're going down to your high-leverage guys to come through in big moments. You get a good starting pitching performance. You get good offense up and down the lineup. But the big thing about the offense today is it's the top of the order, man.
Starting point is 00:01:17 You get obviously three hits from Calrale. He just had an awesome game today. Good to break out of his slump a little bit. I don't want to say slump because it's just, it's so hard to call it a slump when it's been like three or four games. But when you have those expectations for that type of player, you can call it a slump. But you get two hits from Randy Rose Arena scores three. He runs.
Starting point is 00:01:38 That's what you want for the top of your lineup, just setting the table, and it started off the top of the game. Cowellie with three hits, two home runs, obviously breaking the record. You get a hit from Julio, gets two RBIs, though, on that hit. And he gets a walk. That's great for Julio Rodriguez, gets some time to rest later in the game. Two walks from Eugenio Suarez. I love what I'm seeing from Gino lately.
Starting point is 00:02:01 It's not the fact that he's slugging home runs left and right. That's not what I'm looking for him. Just have good at that. every time. He has the power to break one open if he absolutely needs to. You get a hit in 2 RBI from Josh Naylor. As Chris Crawford joins.
Starting point is 00:02:21 Bye. He joins and then leaves right away. That's kind of a, that's a very Chris Crawford move, just to pop in and say something real quick and then go. He has lots of stuff to do today with NFL cutdowns going on right now working for NBC. so we're giving him the day off today. I get to break down this awesome Mariners game.
Starting point is 00:02:47 11 to 4, the Seattle Mariners win this one. We're going to talk about Cal, how special he is. We're going to talk about Logan and his start. I want to ask you guys who you guys think the ace of this staff is right now because it's been a discussion all year for better or for worse. At some points, it's like, okay, you have so many good pitchers that you're like, okay, who do I want starting at game one? And then at times, rip headphone music, says, Claire.
Starting point is 00:03:15 That's so true. He came, I've worn my headphones right now. I was scared by that. I was looking at a different screen. Oh, man, that was fun. But, no, it was good to have Chris come in and pop in and say hi. But, no, it's a win for the 2018 draft class. And they put it on the broadcast today.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Logan Gilbert and Cal Raleigh both drafted in the 2018 draft of the Seattle Marriers. and man, both those guys have been awesome for this team. Cowell has his long-term extension. Logan has yet to get his, but I have a feeling it's coming. We'll see what ends up happening here pretty quick. But I want to ask you guys what you guys think, who is the ace of this staff right now? Like I was saying before Chris jumped in and rudely interrupted me.
Starting point is 00:04:02 At some points, it was like you have so many good pitchers and it's like, okay, who do you feel the best about? And then recently it's been, I don't know if we have any. So who do you really trust in the big moments? And you get two really good starts from Brian Wu and Logan Gilbert in the last two games. George Kirby was pretty good yesterday. You could throw them in the conversation.
Starting point is 00:04:24 I think it's one of those two guys. It's between Brian Wu and Logan Gilbert at this point. But I'm really curious what you guys think. You can comment in here. We'll go through our unsung hero as well. We're going to do the whole kit and caboodle today as the Mariners win this series. against the athletics. I keep wanting to say the Oakland Athletics, but they're not Oakland anymore. Chris will get mad at me for saying that, but that is the case. So we're live from the beach out.
Starting point is 00:04:49 It's here on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. My wife's doing her puzzle right next to me. It's excellent. The Mariners get the win 11 to 4. I didn't have to sweat at one bit. We got Taylor Sosato pitching for two winnings. And, man, Taylor Sos Sosato looks so much better when you're pitching with an eight-run lead than when you're pitching down by one in a big situation. Doesn't he? God, it feels so much different with him in there. That's the situation he is supposed to be used in. So hopefully Dan Wilson learned his lesson there. But yeah, I want to do a little something different. We've done this a few times recently, but since I don't have Chris with me today, I want to go up and down the lineup, kind of talking about each individual player, because I think you can point out almost a contribution from each guy today, which is great.
Starting point is 00:05:39 when you're getting that type of depth in your lineup. And we've been kind of asking for that, especially in this athletic series, because the A's don't have very good pitching. And if you were to show me the three starters in the A's series, the probable starters. Is that better? Is it a little better quieter?
Starting point is 00:06:00 Yeah, you scared a lot of folks. I saw that. I saw it in the chat. And I honestly, that's why I had to come back. Just for, I have five minutes. I have five minutes. So I just wanted, I had to talk about this game. I'm not going to go for five minutes long, by the way.
Starting point is 00:06:18 Go for five minutes long. It's okay. Holy crap, I don't think I can do it. I just don't think I can do it. I did say the word. I'm sorry. This was my favorite Mariner game in a long time. And some of that has to do with just how crappy they had looked in the past week
Starting point is 00:06:32 plus, right? Something along those lines. Logan Gilbert was phenomenal. Absolutely phenomenal. phenomenal. And I'm starting to wonder if we, now, Luis Castillo's had issues on the road. Maybe Logan Gilbert is the guy we've got to talk about here
Starting point is 00:06:49 about being so much better at home than he is away from Safeco, T-Mobile, Boost Mobile. Like, he looked so good. The slider and the splitter in particular today were so good. I, um, Carlos Vargas was really bad. Really bad. You know what? When you score 11 runs?
Starting point is 00:07:13 It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. And that's, you know what? I joked about it on Facebook that, or not Facebook, social media, I joked about it on. Those, thank you for reminding us how crappy the first day, O'Henio Suarez trade was. That's, that's just all that was. Like, that was just a way of saying, hey, remember, this is what we got in the first place for this. Gino gets another two walks today. I was saying he's looking so much more comfortable at the plate. So much more comfortable at the plate. Yeah. I just love this. And Cow Raleigh, man.
Starting point is 00:07:47 Story of the day. Easily. It's incredible. It's incredible. And the thing is, we still got 30 games to go, folks. Like, the next thing is, is can he break Griffey's record? Can he get the eight that he needs over the next, what is it, 31 games, something along of those lines?
Starting point is 00:08:07 30. somewhere around that that's hard that's hard right to get to get to get uh it puts him at about the same homer pace he's on right now though you know can he break that record now on top of you know everything that matters right here that is definitely i think the biggest individual storyline right now for the seattle mariners right can cow rolly break a record that i wasn't sure anyone was going to break for the Seattle mariners to be honest with you because it's so hard to hit homers now in this part you know i know i know Offensively, they tell you that the stuff.
Starting point is 00:08:40 It's still not like an easy place to hit homers. It's more of a neutral park, right? Yes, for Homer specifically. First, Homer specifically, you need some big boy strength to be able to do it to be able to do what he's done over these 130 games. And both of those home runs today were just like they were not skyscrapers, right? They weren't things where you were wondering what was going to go. They were just clobbered.
Starting point is 00:09:07 And by the way, Jacob Lopez had been pitching really well. Oh, Jacob Lopez was not good today. And the Seattle Mariners took advantage of it. Like, and then some. So I don't know, man. I know it's 11 to 4 is the final score. It's so much more than that today. I love the Julio little blooper hit today as well.
Starting point is 00:09:29 I love that like little just because, you know, the results weren't great for him. I know he hit up a couple of balls really hard last night that we should have, I should have done a better job mentioning about, you did mention it. I did it for you. You did it, yeah, 100%. But I said horrible day and it was an inaccurate description of his day. So I will own that one. But it was nice to see him just with two strikes, fight that ball off,
Starting point is 00:09:54 dump it into center field and basically guarantee that this was going to be a blowout, right? Like guarantee that you weren't going to have to worry about it. Question for you. Does Cal have to get 62 to win the MVP? No, no, but he's going to need Aaron Judge to keep struggling, right? Like that's going to be the biggest thing is if he does get 62 and Judge isn't going to get there now because of how much time he missed and because he's just kind of going through it a little bit right now. I don't think he's 100% healthy or even close. But that's a really good question.
Starting point is 00:10:27 If he does get the 62 and he doesn't win MVP, I'm going to be. I think he's got it. Yeah, but I think he gets 62. I think he's got it. I haven't checked the betting markets in a while, but I have to imagine he's the favorite now to win. It's like very, very close. It's almost the dead even between those two,
Starting point is 00:10:44 to be completely honest. And I'm not going to tutor on horns. I'm not a victory lock, guys. You always say, first people on this, I'm not going to lie. Back in like May, early June, we were like, Cal for MPP. I know Judge is hitting 400,
Starting point is 00:10:59 but Cal is going to, he's got it going right now. So let's let's give ourselves credit. Who is your guy besides Cal today? They've got the job done. Hmm. I like the abats Victor Robles took today. I really like the abats that Randy Rose Arena took today. Yes.
Starting point is 00:11:17 That is a lead off hitter, ladies and gentlemen. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. I like what he's been, you know, even with the results not being great. And he had a tough one yesterday outside of the Homer. Now, outside of the Homer is kind of a weird thing to say, right? You know, around you're having a pretty good day.
Starting point is 00:11:32 But there were some rabbit bats, including that one to end the game, right? That wasn't Randy Rose Arena at his best. But for the most part, I think he has looked the part in that leadoff spot. Polanco, I thought, swung the bat pretty well today. It was just a really good offensive day against, I like the patience that we saw, too. Suarez's drawing those couple of walks, right? Like, that's important because you need to give pitchers reasons to throw a. Oh, Hennio strikes, right?
Starting point is 00:12:01 Like at times, he's not like a, he's not somebody who's just completely a unieski Bettencourt where he just won't walk at all, right? But he is someone at times where he can get a little swing happy and doesn't always draw those free passes. When he draws his free passes, he is so much better of a hitter. Josh Naylor, I thought that double was awesome to see as well. The whole offense, I think outside of Garver looked pretty good today, right? Yeah, everyone gets on base.
Starting point is 00:12:32 Every starter gets on base. Oh, and he's gone. I just hit the wrong button. I'm sorry about that. I got excited. I got really, really excited. I just wanted to jump scare one more time. No.
Starting point is 00:12:45 Yeah, that's fair. I needed this, right? And as frustrating as yesterday was, and it was ever so frustrating. This was, if yesterday was, let's say, 3.8. six steps backwards. Today was 11.92 steps forward to me. I just think that today was a day where you got right. Somebody just wrote, we needed this. We needed this to happen, right? You needed that reminder. And you know what? It's not just about the Mariners. Let's consider fanning a sport, right? Sometimes it feels like it is. We as fans sometimes need that reminder of how good this
Starting point is 00:13:30 team can be, right? We need that reminder of, like, what this team, when they're at their very best can do to kind of calm us a little bit, right? Today was a weirdly calming game, like a, okay. We're all right. Everything's okay. Yes. You know, you have to lose games. You have to have stretches like they just had. Every team goes through them unless you are the 2001 Seattle Mariners, or unless you are the 2025 or 2024 white socks or Rockies, those are just what they are, right? Like those aren't streets. They're just what those teams are.
Starting point is 00:14:09 By the way, Rockies eliminated from playoff contention. Go ahead and tear up those tickets, Anders. I know you put a lot of money on the Rocky to the post season. This was a wonderful. People mentioned get right games all the time. And a lot of times I think it's bull crap. I don't think this one's bull crap.
Starting point is 00:14:27 This one felt different to me. And maybe I just wanted it, you know? Yeah. I really wanted it. Yeah. Context matters too, because as Jolly points out here, now you have not gained or lost any ground in the Astros race because they lost it in the last three days. So you get back to two games. Yeah, Trevor Rogers at peace.
Starting point is 00:14:49 Fantasy team. Let's go. Come on. But no, he's like, now it's like, okay, we're back. Let's go. We're still within striking distance here. We're not falling back any farther than the three games that we were yesterday. I'm feeling pretty good about this division race.
Starting point is 00:15:06 I still believe the Mariners are a better team than the Houston Astros. Yeah. They just got to prove it for the last month of the season. Just real quick, and then I got to go. To answer that question, because I don't think we could ever overstate the improvement that Cal Raleigh is made from the right side. It's now 30 to 19. That's a pretty, it's not an even split, obviously,
Starting point is 00:15:25 but that's very close to a 60-40 split. And when you have a 60-40 split from a switch hitter, by the way, he breaks Mickey Mantle's record for most homers twice in a game for a switch hitter, which is really freaking impressive if you're breaking a Mickey Mantle record. Just the improvement from the right side. Like, I honestly feel more confident watching Raleigh hit from the right side right now. If you look at splits, he has a better OPS on the right side. have a better, and I just think he's seeing the better baseball better from that side right now.
Starting point is 00:15:59 Like, and I will say that strike out after he hits the two home runs, I've never seen a hitter swinging harder in my entire life, right? Like I saw it's okay. Yeah. It's okay. Yes. It would have been frustrating if this was like a close game. You know what I mean? And like, you know, like, hey, man, you can't, you can't let this get to you right now. But holy crap on a cracker, did anyone deserve a swing for the. the fence type of at bat more than Cal Raleigh and that at bat. But it does just appear like he's picking up the baseball better. I actually was really encouraged that I saw him smash that single in the ninth inning as well from the left side. Like it was a nice, all right. He's staying within himself. It's going to be fine. Cal Raleigh is going to be an awesome offensive player. I'm sorry
Starting point is 00:16:46 I took up so much of your time. No, last question before you leave. Please. Last question. Has he already secured the best catcher season of all time? Offensively, yes, I think so. I think so. And then when you add in the defense and stuff, we're going to talk on Maliwap Monday about framing when why it matters for Cal Raleigh, because there's a lot of talk from some people I respect
Starting point is 00:17:08 who are saying some not-so-nice things about framing, but it's a misunderstanding of what framing actually is. And I'll just, I'll spoil it here for you with just for a second. It's not just about the fact that you are stealing strikes. It's the fact that you are keeping strikes being called strikes. That is the biggest part of framing is making sure that those strikes don't get called balls. It's not about getting balls called strikes. That's great.
Starting point is 00:17:38 If you can get that done, that's superb. It's about making sure that where that pitch is is placed where it is supposed to be. And that is why Cal Rale is such a special baseball player because you can do that stuff offensively. And on top of that, he might be the greatest framer in the history of the sport. Whoa. I don't care what the metrics say either either. Like, I don't, you watch Cal Raleigh do what he does. And he does as good of job, if not better, of keeping a pitch where it was supposed to be.
Starting point is 00:18:11 It's incredible. He's awesome. Spinning wheels, I love you. I dropped an S-bomb for you earlier. Sorry about that again, guys. It's not the same. It's not the same. No.
Starting point is 00:18:21 I love you. I'll talk to you guys soon. Bye. Sounds good. Thanks, Chris Crawford for hopping in. Really appreciate it. We're going to get some love to our sponsors real quick. Do a really quick unsung hero.

Yeah, for me, like, there's so many times where I'm just, I'm on the golf course.
Starting point is 00:19:13 I was there today, actually, right before I came back and watched the rest of the Mariners game, after that turn at the ninth hole, you're trying to get through the rest of the 18, and it's like, my God, I just want to get home. I'm all in a rest. I'm someone who, like, when I'm out in the sun for long periods of time, it just absolutely drains my energy. So whether you're calling out your MVP, eyeing a long shot division winner, or ready to crown your Super Bowl champ, before week one even kicks off.
Starting point is 00:20:50 This is your moment. For me, I've said it multiple times. My MVP is Joe Burrow this season. He's been so good for a couple of years now, even making that Super Bowl appearance in 2022. I think he's ready to take the next step with his boys. Still has yet to win an NFL MVP. And I think he's about to take that next step
Starting point is 00:21:09 in terms of his offensive play coming into his, I think, fourth full year in the NFL. He's just so primed for a complete breakout here. So I'm going Joe Burrow for the MVP. Visit the Fanduil app today and start planning your futures bets now because Futures Day is one day and one day only. Fan duel, play your game. All right, welcome back to the Mariner's Squad Show, Anderson.
Starting point is 00:21:37 Mariner's Postcast, I'm getting confused at my Seahawk show there. Mariners postcast here, Anderson Hurst, Chris Crawford, stop by for a quick second just to say hi and, of course, have to talk about this game. He can't get away from us, guys. Chat, say hi to Chris if he's still in here. really, really good to have him stop by it and give us his analysis. And a very important and cathartic Mariners win. If you were to go into this A's series, yes, you would have liked the sweep, but you were
Starting point is 00:22:02 to tell, if you were to tell me, we'd get two out of three. I'm taking that every single day of the week. I'm taking that against any team now moving forward. I don't care if it's the Rockies or if it's the Dodgers, give me two out of three. Quick Unsung Hero. I'm going to go with Taylor Sosato. I think it's a good one. relievers are kind of a cheap trick for unsung hero because it's like that's kind of the choice that everyone makes.
Starting point is 00:22:29 Chris makes it all the time. But I think him bouncing back was key. I know he gives up the home run, but two innings pitch gives up the one run. Looks pretty good in the process. Spinning wheels wants me to show my nipple on stream. That's not happening. I'm sorry. I know everyone's excited, but we're not to that point yet.
Starting point is 00:22:50 if the Mariners won the World Series will get to that point. But no, thank you. But, yeah, Sousaida bouncing back is key for him, because I still think he can play a role in this bullpen. I think it's really important that you have now three lefties in the bullpen because you got Gabe Spire, obviously, you got Caleb Ferguson, who has been a little up and down since coming over to the Mariners. If you were to get that third lefty who you truly believe can get lefties out
Starting point is 00:23:20 at a high clip, which I believe Saucato can be that. He's not that right now, but he needs to gain some confidence and get a couple innings under his belt. I know he's had a long injury stretch, and he obviously had the blow up last time out against the Phillies. It is what it is. Like, I still believe he can be an important piece to this bullpen. If anything else at the back end, that's fine.
Starting point is 00:23:41 You need those lefties to come in and make a difference. But no, it's, I think that was a big kind of bounce back performance from him. in a low leverage spot. I'm still going to admit that, like, yeah, it's not the same as coming in when you're up by one and striking out the side or anything like that. But getting some innings under his belt is going to be very, very important. Yeah, I mean, Chris said it with Cal.
Starting point is 00:24:05 It's just so special what we're watching. Enjoy this as a Mariners fan because I don't know if I'm going to see anything like this again in my lifetime. I was too young to see Griffey in his absolute prime. he left before I was really, you know, aware enough as a baseball fan. I saw Itchro's Prime. Wasn't as special to me. He's still a fantastic player, an absolute legend and icon of the game. But what Cald is doing right now may be the best.
Starting point is 00:24:34 If he gets to 60, especially if the Mariners win the division, I think you could say it's the best season any Mariner has ever had offensively. And then especially when you add in what he's doing with the pitching staff as a catcher, and Chris mentioned earlier, the best framer in baseball history. I think you can definitely throw him up there as the best position player performance in any mariner season. So I really hope he gets the MVP. I think he deserves it at this point.
Starting point is 00:25:08 And he's starting to get national recognition for it. Performances like this today are just going to solidify it even more. Just keep doing what he's doing. and I know he has the right mentality too. He's not going to get caught up in the hoop law. He's just going to keep his head down, try and do what it takes to win baseball games day in and day out. So it's going to be a big one for him to continue the rest of this month plus to continue
Starting point is 00:25:32 to be in that MVP conversation with Aaron Judge. So it's a lock. Like both of those guys are going to, one of those guys, I should say, are going to win it. So I think it's going to be a really interesting stretch down the road to see what happens. Mariners take on the San Diego Padres tomorrow at 640. Bryce Miller versus J.P. Sears, the former athletic. Padres dropped their game today, I believe. It's not just a big game for the Mariners.
Starting point is 00:26:00 Both of these teams are chasing the big dogs of their divisions. You got Padres chasing the LA Dodgers and then the Mariners chasing the Houston Astros. So both of them want to catch their rivals before the end of the season. And I think both of them can. I'm not going to lie. I think the Padres and the Mariners are the two best teams in their respective divisions. So it'll be an interesting battle for sure. And of course, Mariners just need one to get the Vedder Cup secured.
