Apologies for being a few minutes late today. Had some scrambling to do as the game was finishing. But as I was picking up my wife from work, I was listening to that last inning on the radio. And the Mariners win.

They win this one by a score of four to one. one over the Philadelphia Phillies. They have clinched the series win. They moved to 64 and 69 on the season. Another big win for the Mariners, and this is now their second straight series win. I have been asking for a long time for them to win three straight series. What a way for that to happen if it were to be against the Cubs,

the Phillies, and I forget who they play next. It's the Blue Jays. So, I mean, let's, I mean, ooh, I kind of just ran in the door. So I'm getting my thoughts kind of situated here. George Kirby was fantastic. We'll start with a start.

My name's Anderson Hurst. This is the Mariners Postcast. We go live after every single Mariner baseball game. We, of course, have to talk about the offense today. Definitely not as top to bottom of a great performance as it was yesterday. But, you know, when the Mariners are winning baseball games and they are, you know, playing at their best, they do it in different ways. It's not solely, you know, just outslugging teams left and right.

It's not solely winning one zero and two to one and stuff like that. You have a little bit of both, a push and a pull, so to speak. And you can win a game when one of your best pitchers goes almost eight innings today against one of the best lineups in baseball. And then you can win a game yesterday where you clog five home run. Um, today was the former. Uh, George Kirby was fantastic. Um, let's get right into his performance as we start with the start because

guys, George Kirby has had such an up and down year. I mean, you look at his overall numbers. Um, it's not something. He's a 4.02 ERA. He's nine and 10 on the season. Um, it's just not something you're used to seeing from him. And when you saw the. 23,

2020 and 2024, George Kirby. The last two years have been somewhat of a far cry from the Kirby that we know and love. And I don't know. I mean,

we talked about the arm slot change a bunch and yes, he's maybe getting hit less hard, but then he's also lost a little bit of his command. This today is him putting it all together. If he can turn into a guy that can pump the fastball like he did today, guys, and just have almost an arrogance on the mound in a good way, right? I'm going to throw fastballs by one of the best lineups in baseball that hits the fastball

almost better than anyone else in baseball. But I don't care because my stuff is that good, and I'm just going to keep throwing strikes. I'm not trying to fool anyone. You're just, you're not going to be able to hit it. That's the George Kirby that we know and love. And if you combine that, you know, with a little bit of a different arm angle than maybe he had in his first couple years in the majors, this is where he can put it all together. This is why the Mariners started him as their game one starter last year during the playoffs. And, you know, this is, he's had a couple rough outings in between. You know, he had a good stretch in the kind of middle part of this season. And then his last little two, three week stretch has been a little iffy.

But today was just an awesome performance. One of the best pitching performances, I think, of the season, considering the stakes, right? I mean, Emerson Hancock's had a couple of them. Brian Wu at home has had a couple of them. You have to look at Logan as well. And then Bryce Miller earlier in the season before he really ran out of gas. But I think against this lineup that has come in as hot as they have been. And they even showed a yesterday against Logan Gilbert, right? That they can do some damage. And now Logan limited that really well yesterday.

But George Kirby today just absolutely mowed them down. And it was really only that rough, I don't want to say even say rough, but Apache second inning. And that's the only time where he had any sort of struggle whatsoever. So just awesome. stuff from George Kirby. It feels like the team as a whole is all coming together at just the right time of the year. And this is what we were all hoping for as Mariners fans, right? It was tough to really predict that to become the case with how poorly they had been playing through four

and a half months. But all of a sudden, Cal Raleigh can hit. And he gets another home run today, by the way. Your starting pitching is finally looking as elite as advertised. And your bullpen's starting to really show some depth as well. Munoz has another great outing tonight. A good kind of mop-up from Jose Ferreira coming into, I don't even say mop-up. He needed to get one out and he got the out.

It's exactly what he needed to do. But it's just, this is just a mariner win, guys. And they win the series. And you go, This is now, it's very important, I think, for the Mariners to win the first two games of the series. Because you can go into the third game playing a little loose with not much to lose. You've already won the series. You've done what you needed to do in this three game stretch.

Now, if you go and get the sweep tomorrow, we're talking like, okay, this team is already rolling. And they're ready to go. So it's just there's a lot of good stuff from today. Let's move on to the offense. Not a ton of standout stuff today offensively. Obviously, you get the Cow Raleigh home run. And he had, obviously, the breakout game yesterday. I think what you saw yesterday was a culmination of a lot of things

kind of coming together for Cal, him finally letting the game come to him a little bit, him not missing mistake pitches. And now you're seeing the true Cal Raleigh come back to life. And it's a guy that can carry an offense. It's a guy that can carry a team, not just an offense. He can carry a team because he manages that pitching staff so well as well. So, I mean, if he continues to do what he's doing right now, there's really not a defined ceiling for this team.

They can absolutely do a ton of damage in the rest of the regular season and in the playoffs as well. So the second run to take the lead for the Mariners, that home run for Calerale was to tie the game after the second inning from George Kirby allowed one run on the Justin Crawford single. Josh Nader gets the single and he scores Julio Rodriguez after Julio gets the infield hit. Josh Nader tries to stretch it into a double. out. But the damage was done. You get two to one. And then the big one was Dom Canzon with his single in the seventh inning, I want to say, to score J.P. Crawford. So just a lot of good stuff from the Seattle Mariners today. And scores Taylor Ward as well, I should say. So that made it four to one.

So, I mean, you're not breaking out 100% offensively. It is pretty interesting how Zach Wheeler, who's having a really good year, once again, one of the best pitchers in baseball, you kind of clover him and get him out of the game really early. And then you struggle against Aranola, who has actually really struggled this year. But that's kind of Mariners baseball. And I'm not going to complain because it's two wins in two different ways. No one gets a multi-hit game tonight, but you do get two walks from Cal Raleigh.

that's the other thing that I think is really, really important to point out with Cal. It's not just that he's running into a couple home runs here and there. It's that it's the process that has been outstanding from him in the last week or so. And it's really showing in his results now. And now that he is seeing the fruits to his labor, so to speak, I think he's going to start to take more confidence. and it's going to be a completely different offense with just one guy performing at the level that we expect him to at this point.

J.P. Crawford, welcome back. Gets a hit today as well in his return. Julio gets the infield single. Still not quite clicking with him just yet. Want to see a little bit more from him. Obviously, like with Cal going now, if Julio can just take that next step, like we know he can.

It still hasn't happened. Boy, this offense is going to turn into something completely different. But Dom-Kan zone, once again, at the top of the lineup, has a very clutch hit to kind of, I don't want to say break it open. Because it was still 4-1 at that point. It's a three-run game. Very, very getable for the Phillies. But the way the Mariners were pitching today, that was more than enough.

So, yeah, just a lot of gritty, selfless at bats from the Mariners tonight, where you're not going to, you know, jump off the, the stat sheet with one guy having three home runs like yesterday with Cal Raleigh. It's just guys doing their job, passing the baton, and getting the runs that they need to do. And this offense doesn't need to be a top five offense in the league, especially with the way the pitching is all of a sudden figuring itself out right now. George Kirby is what he showed tonight against this type of lineup. If Logan Gilbert is what he's been basically the second half of the year,

if Emerson Hancock has been basically what he's been all year, Brian Wu at home. And, you know, obviously the Bryce Miller situation is a whole other story. But if those guys are what they have shown us, they can be and have been for the most part. You don't need to be a top five offense. You just need to have guys do their jobs. And that's exactly what happened today. So a 401 Mariner victory over the Phillies.

They are still third in the AAL West. They are now moved to two and a half games back. of the AOS leading Astros after the Astros beat the Yankees today and one of the crazier games of the year, by the way. Let's take a quick break. because it feels like there has been a little bit of a shift in mentality. I'm not going to say the season's turning around or anything like that. I've been caught by that too many times, but something looks different to me. and it's good to see. My name is Anderson Hurst to Mariners win today, 4 to 1 over the Philadelphia Phillies.

They moved to 64 and 69 on the season. Two and a half games back out of the AL West. They're chasing it down. It feels like they're starting to turn a corner at the most important. part of the season. George Kirby was fantastic today. I'm going to look at my unsung moment of the game. And it's going to be actually in the eighth inning.

I love the decision to throw Kirby back out there for the eighth. And he gets the first two outs. And as soon as he gives up that hit, a lot of people would have maybe tried to ride that a little bit longer. Like he still looked like he was kind of cruising there. a little bit. Kirby strikes out. Schwerber. He gets Turner to line out. And then Bryce Harper just had a great day today. He singles. And then Dan, very quick to pull the trigger on George Kirby. And I actually think that's the right move for today. We've seen Kirby many times when he either gets a call that doesn't

go his way or a hit that shouldn't have been a hit in terms of just kind of a bloop single. something like that. Now, Bryce Harper's single wasn't a bloop single, don't get me wrong. And I would have loved to see George go eight full innings, right? Maybe even nine. If he were able to be as efficient as he was in those last two innings as he had been up until that point. However, it was still like, okay, we don't want to screw around with this kind of game. And Jose Ferreira was the exact right person to bring in in that situation. it's against Luis Arias, obviously a contact guy that's going to put the ball in play and be very aggressive against George Kirby, who knows he's feeling it at this point.

I could smell a lot of trouble happening to that point, and we might have a different, at least way the game plays out, if not a different result. If you try and get one more out of George Kirby in that situation, and I'm not taking anything away from him. He may have blown something right. by Luis Arryes. But I think bringing on Jose Ferrer, the guy who pitches to contact and gets ground balls to get out of innings was the right decision in that moment. So I want to give Dan Wilson some praise that he wasn't caught up in the ceremonial aspect of how George was going. No,

you play to win the game that is today. I think Jose Ferrer coming in in that moment. And look, if he had stuck with George Kirby, I wouldn't have absolutely hated it either. But I think the right decision was made to go to Jose Ferrer in that situation and end up getting the win. So I think that's just an unsung moment in the game that if you maybe try and stick with George for one, two more outs, like we've seen happen with Kate Anderson, like we saw happen with Bryce Miller in the past week, that can easily kind of get out of hand a little bit. And only protecting a three run lead against this good of an offense. There's a lot of kind of iffy situations there. So I think Dan actually played that perfectly. So underrated

or unsung moment of the game is Dan Wilson coming to pull George Kirby. That way he gets a standing ovation too. So good for him. And then Jose Ferrer does his job, gets the out and turns it over to Andres Munoz in the ninth inning. But overall, a big Mariner win, four to one over the Phillies. Reminder, no postcast tomorrow because it's a day game. I'm actually taking my son, Austin, to his first Mariner game tomorrow at six months old.
