Starting point is 00:00:04 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Oh, man. I wish it wasn't this predictable, guys. I really wish it wasn't. The Mariners lose 4 to 1 against the New York Yankees in the Bronx. After having a 1-0 lead after the 6th inning.
Starting point is 00:00:38 thanks to a Randy Rosarina home run. Dan Wilson goes to Michael Rucker to protect the one run lead. When you have Edward Bizarardo, Serentine Dominguez, supposedly Gabe Spire, if not, that's an even bigger issue,
Starting point is 00:00:58 but for all we know, Gabe Spire is available. Even Jose Ferre going out for two more outs, because it would have been the preferred option there. But no, we go to Michael Rucker to defend a one run lead.
Starting point is 00:01:13 And the jokes write themselves in this situation. And first, I have to apologize. I'm not apologize, but let you guys know, I am alone with the little one right now. So if he does end up fussing, I may need to break for a quick second bring him over, but he's doing fine right now.
Starting point is 00:01:32 But the jokes write themselves when you bring in Michael Rucker when you're down by one. I forget which game it was. I want to say Cincinnati a couple weeks ago, where the Mariners were down by one going into the eighth inning and then bring in Michael Rucker and everyone was pissed off, right? But at least you're down by one, right?
Starting point is 00:01:51 You're not trying to protect the lead at that point. You're trying to keep it close. That's a little more defensible for the Michael Rucker situation. This one is not. You literally just took the lead in probably one of the luckiest fashions, imaginable. I mean, you get, what, three hits tonight? One of them was a bloop, like a little squibbler from Brendan Donovan. One of them was just an absolute muff job by Jazz Chisholm. We tried to play off like he got injured. And one of them was a short porch Yankee Stadium home
Starting point is 00:02:28 run that arose a rain a hit. Those are your three hits tonight. So you got gifted, It basically won your lead. And for a team that's struggling, just got swept over the weekend, is trying to stay in the playoff race at this point. That's who you put back out there. You put Michael Rucker in there. Look, I realize Bizarro struggled.
Starting point is 00:02:52 I realized Dominguez's debut wasn't ideal for the Mariners. I realize putting Jose Ferre out for a second inning. probably, I mean, it's less effective than him just pitching one inning. But I still think all three of those options are better than what you ended up doing. So we'll talk about that. But at the end of the day, look, Dan Wilson's just horrid management of this team is once again masking the fact that this team was putrid offensively once again. Like I said, besides a opposite field barely qualifies as a hard hit ball, Randy or Rosarena, short porch, home run.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Everyone else was pathetic. The Taylor Ward experience? Dude, I thought you were supposed to get on base. You're 0 for 4 with the K. Has he walked once as a Seattle Mariner? I haven't seen that at all. Julio does get a walk, but it goes 0 for 3 with a K, continues to not. be who we expect him to be.
Starting point is 00:04:06 And the longer we go along without him getting hot, the less likely, of course, it is to happen. Dom Canzon's quietly had a bad two plus weeks. He does get one of the hits tonight. Cal Raleigh, man. He's now below 160. He's now below 160 for his batting average. And I'm not normally a batting average guy.
Starting point is 00:04:31 But when it's that freaking low, something's going on. He's a 563 OPS. He is actively hurting this team right now. And Austin, my son is upset about it. Weston Wilson, I mean, Colt Emerson's 2Ks were about as predictable as it comes. It's just, it's not happening. It's not happening right now. And I don't see any sort of change that's coming for the Seattle Mariners. Yeah, you don't see it either, Austin, do you? You don't see it coming either, do you?
Starting point is 00:05:10 I might bring them on stream, guys, because I need some good vibes in here. But, and I think he'll want to kind of say hi to everybody. But just, and you get a good start from Brian Wu, too. So let's start there. Let's start with a start, as we always do here on the Mariners podcast. My name's Anderson Hurst. Mariners lose 4 to 1.
Starting point is 00:05:31 Start with the start, Brian Wu. was pretty dang good. Was pretty dang good today in his sort of bounce back outing. Now, the one negative on the Brian Wu start, and it probably had an effect on this game, was the fact that he wasn't efficient, and he was only able to get through five instead of getting through six. And he had the stuff to get through.
Starting point is 00:06:02 six. It's not like he was struggling. It's just he wasn't very efficient today. He did have to get out of a couple tough situations, especially in that first inning. Getting out of that with zero runs was fantastic for for Brian Wu. But after that, he was really good. He was the Brian Wu that we know and love and expect to see every single time he goes out onto the mound. So having him give you more than a chance today by his starting pitching performance was even more so the issue. But I don't want to understate the fact that if he goes six instead of five, then you have Ferrer for seven, and then it takes Michael Rucker, maybe not.
Starting point is 00:06:44 Maybe you go to Michael Rucker in the eighth inning instead of the seventh inning, but it pushes everyone down, right? So it played a part. I'm no, by no means, don't get this wrong, by no means, blaming Brian Wu for this outing. But him not being able to get through six played a part in the decision-making. Now, again, a normal manager, a competent manager, would be able to still get their way through that. And yes, if Bizarro was pitching like he was last season, if maybe Sir Anthony Dominguez had shown you a little bit more,
Starting point is 00:07:25 you'd feel more confident in those guys. And maybe, for whatever reason, Michael Rucker has impressed you more than those guys at this point. And you trust him more than those other guys in that situation. But that's not what I felt like this was. This felt like trying to once again steal outs, so to speak, and then save those guys for later in the game for the eighth inning and then the ninth inning with Munoz eventually. But I don't know. I'm not going to speculate. because either way it was a bad decision.
Starting point is 00:07:57 And yes, hindsight 2020, it's a post-game show, guys. I'm looking back at what happened. It was not the right decision. However, I do have the proof on my tweets that I was not thrilled with the idea of Michael Rucker, Michael Rucker going out there to defend a one-win lead in the seventh inning, even initially. So I'm not just looking back on this because it didn't work. It was questionable from the start. And as many people have pointed out in this chat,
Starting point is 00:08:24 I think almost all the fans felt like this was the case, right? This isn't a, oh my God, we never expected that to happen. It's almost a given at this point. So it's just, it's starting to get laughable. I'm getting tired of doing the same old postcast over and over and over again. But it's bad. It's bad. Let's try and find a positive.
Starting point is 00:08:50 We'll do an unsung hero or unsung moment or unsung something here in the, second half of the show. Let's take a quick break. We'll come back and discuss a little bit more here on the Mariners Postcast after a 4-1 loss against the New York Yankees. And today's game, the everyday icon's got to be Randy Rosalena. Actually, you know what? I'm going to go Brian Wu. Good for Brian Wu. I think it's a big thing for him moving forward if he kind of gets these road. struggles off of his back, kind of gets that bugaboo out of his game. He can finally start to really have the full

All righty, everybody, I got Austin with me. He's hanging out. He wanted to be a part of the stream. So we're talking about a Mariners loss. It's a 401 loss.
Starting point is 00:13:47 Let me get the dose off the screen there. Thank you so much to them for sponsoring the show. Wave hi, Austin. So there's a couple ways you can look at this game in a positive way. I mean, the Brian Wu aspect of it definitely was one of them. But another one I want to say is the defense. I mean, this team actually has been playing some decent defense for the last couple weeks. There you go. Austin, say hi.
Starting point is 00:14:15 So that's an aspect of the team that I guess you can look out a little bit and be a little bit positive about. considering they're not losing games in that sort of frustrating fashion. But we're grasping at straws here, guys. This team is playing awful baseball. If it's not the pitching, it's the hitting. If it's not the hitting, it's the defense. If it's not the defense, it's the bullpen. There's so many different ways that this team is consistently finding ways to lose baseball
Starting point is 00:14:42 games. And yes, you can point to the hitting as probably the biggest reason why, especially if you look at the overall stats. but you get, there are times where you do get, you know, a positive hitting performance. And then you have, just have a terrible start from someone. Or maybe you get a really good start and you can't finish it off with the bullpen. It's like they can never string together multiple aspects of a good winning baseball team. And, you know, yes, you can blame the manager as much as you want.
Starting point is 00:15:15 I think his decision making today was terrible. Say hi. Say hi. Austin would have been a better manager. than Dan Wilson today. But it's, there's something to be said about the players themselves as well. I don't think that, you know, it's solely Dan Wilson's fault. And when I say he should be fired, it's less of, I think, everything is, is his fault.
Starting point is 00:15:41 And he's way over his skis. And he's, he's the main reason why we suck. That's not, that's not the thought process in asking for him to be fired. It's more that I think having that happen would send a message, right, Austin? See? Would send a message to the team. Now he's grabbing my cord. That it's not good enough.
Starting point is 00:16:04 And Cal Raleigh would literally have to look himself in the mirror and say, I just basically, I'm one of the main reasons Dan Wilson got fired. And they talk about how important of a relationship that Dan Wilson has with his players. And that's one of the reasons why they can't fire him. But due to, you know, that shouldn't keep you from doing what's right for the baseball team, right? And to me, that would be even more of a reason to fire him because, you know, A, you're putting him in a bad situation. And B, here, you want to see a little bit more? Say hi.
Starting point is 00:16:42 And B, you're, the players themselves would respond better because they, a guy that they supposedly like some. much is now being let go of a job because of their underperformance. So that's the reason why the Mets, the Phillies and the Boston Red Sox all fired their managers. I'm sure the players liked Alex Cora. I don't know. I wasn't into the details and all that stuff. But it's because they just weren't doing well.
Starting point is 00:17:13 And they needed to have some urgency for that season. And that's what the Mariners need to have right now. That's what they should have at this point. So Austin agrees with me. He thinks it's time to go. It's time for a managerial change. And it's just I don't see much else that they can do to try and salvage this season. And maybe the season is not salvageable.
Starting point is 00:17:35 It's probably not at this point. But there should be a sense of urgency. So that's why I think it's really, it's time. There's no reason not to at this point because you've kind of exhausted everything else. And when you do that, the same. thing should be the case or at least discussed regarding Edgar Martinez and Kevin Siteser as well. They got a bunch of credit last year for the team's supposedly improved hitting. Then they should get just as much of the blame this year for that exact same reason.
Starting point is 00:18:07 So that's why I think the changes have to be made. So just another Mariners Postcast episode where we're discussing the same stuff, guys. and I hope it changes, but I don't see any reason why it would, especially considering who you're playing in the next couple weeks as well. So we'll talk to you after tomorrow's game. Austin might be here again. So depending on what ends up happening, we might have a happy Austin.
Starting point is 00:18:34 We might have a sad Austin. So let's hope we have a happy Austin tomorrow and maybe a Mariner victory for the first time in like a week. That would be great. Talk to you guys tomorrow. Go, Mariners. Have a good one.
