Starting point is 00:00:03 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Well, the young guys are all right. The Mariners win in Colorado, five to four over the Rockies. In quite an impressive couple, you know, not full game, but offensive performance. especially in that ninth inning. Las Montez gets the go-ahead home run.
Starting point is 00:00:44 Just a fantastic day for him. And honestly, Michael O'Royo as well, the young guns are okay. I think it's quite fitting that in a season where a lot of the veterans and guys in the core that's been here for a long time have really struggled, the few bright spots for this season have come from whether it's Emerson Hancock kind of breaking out a little bit,
Starting point is 00:01:13 whether it's Las Montes coming up and looking like the real deal. And whether it's Edwin Arroyo, or sorry, I keep saying Edwin-Royle, it's the former Mariners prospect of the traded for Luis Castile. Michael Arroyo coming in. I really like what I've seen from him too. It's in a lost season, you can find these little moments of really kind of positive lights. to look forward to for the future. And I think Las Montez and Michael O'Royos specifically fall into that category.
Starting point is 00:01:46 Just a great game for those guys. And in a big moment, even though Laz, like, this is his first taste in the major leagues, and we're not playing for huge moments right now. It's not what it could be playing in a giant playoff race. Imagine what it could have been, by the way, if this was like, oh, my God, gets us even with Houston. Let's go. But it's not.
Starting point is 00:02:07 unfortunately, but it's still a big moment for Las. This is as high of a level as he's played in his entire career. This is a playoff chase for him. This is a playoff series for him. All of these are. So he's stepping up in the moment. And yes, it is frustrating to not see them play every single day. Because I feel like at this point, why not?
Starting point is 00:02:30 Why not look ahead and see what you got in Las Montez and Michael Oroyo, in Brock Rod. in Koyang playing shortstop, honestly. There's a lot of different ways you can kind of go about it. So I love the youth movement here recently. Let's start with a start with Brian Wu. Then we'll talk a little bit more offensively. He had a really good first inning.
Starting point is 00:02:56 And then not a lot other than that. And then a couple big moments late in the game. And then we'll do our unsung hero of the day. let's start with that start with Brian Wu. I thought he was really good today, all things considered. I mean, he does get 10 hits against him. It's not very Brian Wu-esque. But, you know, 5 and a third, 10 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk and 4Ks.
Starting point is 00:03:24 This Coorsfield is obviously notoriously hard to pitch in. I thought he did a really good job of navigating when he was giving up contact, when he was getting hits against him to really limit that damage. I mean, he really only gave up that first inning run, the fourth inning run, and then he's charged with the two or one of the two in the sixth inning as well when he came out. I do think it's tough to say that a guy that was given up 10 hits
Starting point is 00:03:59 should have stayed in the game, but I feel like he should have, especially considering your options in the bullpen right now. It feels like he was just starting to kind of get into a groove a little bit. I don't think his pitch count was incredibly high. It was kind of a weird decision. Now, I realize you're trying to go lefty, lefty with Gabe Spire there, but he has not had the elite stuff that we've come to get used to seeing from him.
Starting point is 00:04:32 in the early part of this season and in previous seasons as well. And he kind of gets, has a rough go of it. Gives up, I think, three straight hits, including, you know, technically I say one of the runs goes to Brian Wood, but then another run as well. So it gives the Rockies the lead at that point. But then in the seventh inning, you come back. And in what was a massive moment, you know, Lazz,
Starting point is 00:05:02 had a, um, a big moment. Michael O'Royo leads things off with a double and he comes around to score. Um, just great, great stuff, uh,
Starting point is 00:05:13 from him. He, he starts the double and then a Rosarani gets hit by the pitch and then, um, uh, Dom Canzone hits a sack fly to, to score Michael Oroyo, um,
Starting point is 00:05:24 to tie things up, which I think is kind of an underrated moment for him. And I'm going to do my unsung hero right now. And it's Michael Oroyo in this game. I know he didn't, start. But he comes in as a pinch hitter, starts an inning off well, and gets things really rolling there, which I've been really impressed with what I've seen from him. I know it's a small sample size, but he looks like a complete big league hitter. He's going to be a little bit more
Starting point is 00:05:51 aggressive. I like the kind of duality and approach between Laz and Michael O'Royle. They're both probably going to strike out a decent amount, but in different ways. Laz is more of a the comp with him. Everyone says he's baby, you're done. I think he's more of a Kyle Schwabre type where if he masters the ability to really just zone in
Starting point is 00:06:15 and swing at the pitches in the zone and take pitches out of the zone, he could elevate his value even more than his kind of outlook is right now. But Michael Oroyo is kind of a very high hit tool guy that can get to a lot of pitches that isn't going to walk very much. that's going to, you know, hit doubles, hit triples, hit a few homers here and there as well.
Starting point is 00:06:38 So two totally different profiles of hitter. And they both look like, honestly, when they come in, two of the better offensive options right now for the Seattle Mariners. Tough day for Cal Rale. He goes 0 for 4 with four strikeouts. Not a good day for Julio Rodriguez either. He goes 0 for 4. Josh Nader goes one for four. Like I said, the veterans who you've
Starting point is 00:07:05 wanted to rely on for the majority of this year have not been getting it done, and it's been the young guys that we're doing it. And of course, the one constant in all of it is well, Randy, Rosarana, three hits, three for four. Just, he's been so consistent.
Starting point is 00:07:21 This team's going to sorely miss him next year. That's going to be a huge hold of Phil, because I don't really see a reality where he's coming back to the Seattle Mariners. Let's take a quick break. We'll come back. We'll discuss a couple of the bigger moments in this game,
Starting point is 00:07:35 the decision making behind it and all of that here on the Mariners Postcast after a 5 to 4 victory in Coors Field on the Mariners Postcast, and my name is Anderson Hurst. Starting point is 00:09:06 single day. That's why each week we're recognizing one player whose performance embodies those same qualities. For this game, I'm going to highlight Las Montez. I think it's a pretty obvious one. When you needed someone to step up in a big moment,
Starting point is 00:09:22 you get him to hit the big home run. And it's really cool that in a season that's obviously not really going anywhere, you have some moments and some things to look forward to for the future. He's definitely one of those things.

The season's winding down. I just want to say a quick thank you to everyone who has stuck with us all year long, thick and thin, whether you've watched one episode, whether you've watched every single episode. Thank you again.
Starting point is 00:11:07 Just for your support, for just being here and having. hanging out with the community. It makes difficult moments like this whole season a lot better when you have people to enjoy it or not enjoy it with. And of course, it makes the best moments even better with the community as awesome as this one. So thank you to you guys. Appreciate it. We're getting down to the nitty gritty of this season. I mentioned earlier, Michael Oroyo is my unsung here. I want to give a quick shout out to Randy or Rosa Rana, though. Just constant professionalism. And believe me, as someone who has questioned that aspect of his game for a long time now, when the rest of the team looks like they're absolutely quitting,
Starting point is 00:11:53 at least the veteran core, I mentioned the young players obviously playing for a chance at next year's team. And you can obviously see his motivations, right? He's entering his contract year. He sees a chance to really close out this season strong and get even more money in the free agent market. which he absolutely should. That's, that's, but all of these other players should be having that same type of motivation, right?
Starting point is 00:12:22 I mean, in a different way, yes, Josh Naylor just got paid, so it doesn't matter what he does in his eyes, but like, you should always as a professional athlete, be finding those edges here and there.
Starting point is 00:12:34 So I just wanted to shout out Randy for being that guy, where a lot of people questioned, you know, his effort level, his focus level, his consistency. And this year, like, I know there's been moments, whether it's the jogging to the foul ball earlier in Tampa Bay. You know, there's a couple weird plays in left field. He's never going to be an elite defender.
Starting point is 00:13:00 That's just not who he is. But his approach at the plate is more professional than anyone. Period. End of story. He can be aggressive when he needs to be. He can hit the home run and hit the mistake pitch, but he also goes the other way. He hits for average as well.
Starting point is 00:13:17 He takes his walks, and then he runs on the base paths. We haven't seen a lot of the same weird base paths blunders with him this year that we have in seasons past. He's kind of put it all together. And good for him, it's a good time for him to do that, right, entering a contract here.
Starting point is 00:13:36 And, you know, it's, again, in a year where the rest of the. team really isn't showing a lot of that juice. He has absolutely done that. And I just wanted to give him a quick shout out. Again, three for four today. A run scored, no strikeouts. He has a 281 average in an 858 OPS. I believe he's like seventh or sixth in the American League in war, like just a really good baseball player this year. So yeah, it's going to be a sad reality when he signs with the different team because I think he has been a fantastic player.
Starting point is 00:14:14 And it's another disappointing part of this season that you're wasting what could have been a special player in big moments in the playoffs. We've obviously seen him do it in Tampa Bay. He had a couple moments in Seattle as well. But man, it's going to be tough to see someone else or him in a different uniform, I should say. On the other side of that, the flip side of that, you're kind of seeing his supposed replacement in Las Montez step it up
Starting point is 00:14:41 a little bit. Now, I know it's not great business to just assume that a young player is going to step up to fill the void of a veteran player leaving, especially one as quality as Randy Rosarena. But there are a lot of tools in Las Montez's game. I do want to see him play
Starting point is 00:14:57 every day. Maybe not in left field. Maybe he's a DH kind of type that we're looking for, and then you kind of go get a true left fielder, but you at least have a spot to kind of work him into it and maybe a royal as well kind of falls into that category. He's played a lot of left field in his minor league year as well.
Starting point is 00:15:14 So, yes, all in all, a loss season, but there are still positives. And I think today is a good example of that with Laz hitting a big home run, Michael Royo, a big moment to kind of help get the Mariners all tied up in the seventh inning. And then, of course, Randy or Rosarana going three for four. It's really even like those three guys offensively have been getting it done. So good stuff. No postcast tomorrow. I apologize. I have too much going on at KJR. We got a Husky game. We got a crack in preseason game for the first time and a Sounders game all going on at the exact same time. So we have all hands on deck on the radio side of thing. So I apologize and won't be able to go live for you guys. But we'll talk to you in the Astro series. And, you know, hopefully we can start continuing to stack positive signs for this team moving forward, even if you're not going to be in the playoffs this year. But we'll talk to you again soon.
Starting point is 00:16:09 have a good one and go back.
