This is the Mariners Postcast.
Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners.
Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
That was another fun one.
It wasn't quite as fun as yesterday.
Well, it depends.
Are you someone who likes it's a small world or are you someone who likes to be on those adventurous rides?
If you like being on those adventurous rides, this is a game for you.
is Chris Crawford. Solo again. Anders is enjoying his time off, I hope. Mariner's win six to five.
They take the first two of the series against the Minnesota Twins, a four game series.
We're going to break it all down as we do every single game. The Locked-on Mariners Postcast,
I think I forgot to mention what we were last time. Again, I'm new to this. I'm new to the
solo do low for this format anyway. But my name is Chris Crawford. Normally it's me and Anders.
today it's just me.
That's what it'll be for the next week or so.
Well, not even a week, just the next four or so games.
This was fun.
And we're going to talk about a not great start from Luis Castillo.
One really good inning from the Mariners and then kind of shaky offense,
but a massive moment from a volatile Seattle Mariner.
And then we'll go into our unsung hero.
But let's start with Luis Castillo.
First of all, before we even get into that,
we really appreciate your comments.
we'd appreciate if you hit like and subscribe. I will do my best to show as many comments as possible,
but because I am still kind of getting used to this newish format, if I don't put your thing in,
it's not because I hate you. It's not because you cut me in line at AMPM. It's just I'm still
getting used to this formatting. But let's talk about Luis Castillo. And if you take a look at the
overall line, you see a guy who threw five innings, allowed seven hits, five run runs, two walks,
three strikeouts. And a lot of times a line for a pitcher will be like, well, that's not really
indicative of how he pitched. I think that's pretty indicative of how Luis Castillo pitched today.
He got away with some stuff in the first inning, a terrific, terrific play from Donovan
Solano in the first inning to get him out of that. Then the second inning's great.
Third inning on was not the best, not the best. But I will give him credit. He kind of,
I don't want to say the word battled, because battled is, it's right.
Battled is right.
Whenever you hear a manager say a pitcher battled, what they're really saying is they struggled.
It applies here.
It applies here.
He just wasn't at his best.
The command wasn't great.
I'll give some credit to the twins offense, and this is a twins offense that is talented,
you know, it wasn't the best start that we've seen from Luis Castillo.
Now, do I have any long-term concerns?
No. And as a bunch of you pointed out, Luis Castillo has been really solid this year, really solid.
As my good friend, Smacky the Frog says right here, Castillo was a bit rough, but he's been solid all year.
Got to give him some grace for sure. And, you know, we're a daily recap show. So we're going to react to what we see.
And what we saw today from Luis Castillo wasn't good enough. That doesn't mean I have any long-term concerns with Louise Castillo whatsoever.
He's not perfect. Pobuddy's Nerfict. You know, that's one of my.
favorite phrases for a reason. He didn't pitch out his best. That doesn't mean that Luis Castillo
doesn't get the job done the overwhelming majority of the time. He just didn't have his best
command. He was just missing two, just a little bit off. And you know, that double by Walner was a
nice piece of hitting. He does get the huge out. I think that anything could have been even bigger,
if not for our good friend Ty France doing something that Ty France has done a lot. Hitting it to
double plays. But he gets that double play. Imagine what happens.
happens if that guy gets on. If France gets on and that that double, we're talking about a massive
inning. So that was a big play. And kudos to him for that. Yes, he gives up the two run double
afterwards. The rest of the pitching, oh, I could go on and on about how fantastic this bullpen was
today. Gabe Spire, fantastic job. Does give up the hit, but does an outstanding job of working
around it. Carlos Vargas, an inning in a third. Yeah, he gives up the walk and he doesn't strike
anybody out. That stuff looked so good. I thought Goldsmith brought it up perfectly. The ball was just
jumping out of his arm today. And it was so difficult for them to pick up. Like, that's just a really
solid job by a really solid reliever. It's a really interesting thing. And I know I say really too
much, by the way, it's something I'm working on. It was an excellent job by Carlos Vargas.
is, but let's talk about Andres Munoz and Matt Brash, because first of all, kudos to Daniel Wilson,
as my good buddy Paras Social Andy brings up.
Kudos to him for bringing in, bringing in Andres Munoz in the eighth inning,
rather than waiting for the night.
That was the game.
You had to go get your best reliever there.
and there was no, as Brent points out right here,
no rest from either one of them.
And that was great to see.
You know, you always get a little worried when you have a reliever,
not pitch for a while.
Didn't affect them whatsoever.
Didn't affect them whatsoever.
But it was absolutely the right call to use Munoz in that situation.
Don't save him for a situation that may not exist.
Go get him and face that part of the lineup.
And he was fan-touching.
Now, Brasch doesn't have to face as tougher of a lineup.
He doesn't have to face as quality of hitters that Munoz does.
That doesn't mean that wasn't a huge situation.
You pitch in a one-grown game in the ninth inning, you've got to be at your best,
and he looked fantastic.
I have no doubt in my mind that Matt Brash can be a closer in the MLB level.
There's no doubt in my mind.
There shouldn't be any doubt in anyone's mind whether or not Matt Brash can be.
one of the best relievers in baseball.
And you saw it today even without a ton of strikeouts.
Like he's not just a guy who needs to fan hitters to get,
and he does get a strikeout today.
By the way, still an ERA of 0.00.
Good for you, Matt Brash.
Those of you have followed me for a while,
have known that I've been a big Matt Brash fan
for a long, long time.
It's very fun to see him live up to the hype.
It's very fun indeed.
And, you know, that's a good word for it.
What a luxury to be able to use your closer in that situation, knowing that you have a guy behind him like that, that can get the job done.
It's huge.
It's absolutely huge.
Okay.
We're going to take a quick commercial break, but then we are going to take a look at this offense today.
Kind of just one inning of great offense, but a couple of real big moments.
And then we're going to do an unsung hero as well.

Okay. And by the way, that was a tricky ad read for me. That was a tricky ad read for me. Let's talk about this offense. The third inning was fantastic. Everything but the third inning till the ninth was pretty shaky. And Chris Paddock wasn't very good today. Let's go kind of over the individual games. J.P. had a tough one. He does draw the hit by pitch in the ninth inning. Luke Rayleigh had a little bit of a tough one. Dominic Kansas.
zone not the best day for him. But I really liked that third inning. I really liked what they did.
And to be fair, Rayleigh is hit by a pitch as well with the bases loaded. Hit by pitches ended up
playing a huge factor in this game. But we look at that third inning. Big thing here,
Julio Rodriguez, it's a sacrifice fly to right. Awesome to see and might be kind of a
foreshadowing of something that happens there. Yeah, sack flies aren't great, but productive outs and
especially balls that are hit in the air, and I think that's a big thing that we're going to talk about in a second.
I think that that's really solid to seem.
I think it's important to see Julio getting the ball in the air as much as he does.
We talked about it yesterday with him pulling the ball.
Now, he didn't pull the ball today, and he struck out a couple of times, one on kind of a shaky call, in my personal opinion.
But it's nice to see hard contact.
It's nice to see some hard, you know what?
This is a great way to put it.
productive loud outs. But they didn't just have productive loud outs. In that third inning,
big dumper shows that he's so much more than just a Homer guy right now. It's not just a
rip and hope type player. Singles to right to score Cole Young. Then Luke Rayleigh gets hit by the
pitch that scores J.P. Crawford. And then Donovan Solano, man, Donovan Solano with that two-run single,
and I thought this game was over. I thought five-nothing with the way Castillo bounced back in
second inning, we're done. We can just go home and we can just have a great day. It'd be fun.
We can just kind of pay attention to what happens. Now, it doesn't end up being that way
because the offense for the next, the offense for the next five innings didn't look very good.
Didn't look very good. Yeah, he's washed for sure. For those listening, I don't care,
Calvin, Homer today. He might be washed. Maybe we can trade him. We could probably get a couple
bags of balls, something along those lines.
The offense did not look good, but then let's talk about that ninth inning, because
that ninth inning, and I want to make sure I get the exact sequence of everything that
happens here, and this will be my unsung hero.
It's not going to be Julio, but we'll talk about the Julio moment, of course.
So in the top of the ninth inning, Kenzone lines out to third.
It was good, hard contact, but then Jorge Palanco gets hit by a pitch, and Wilson makes the
absolute right call to pinch run Dylan.
more for Jorge Polanco. Then Cole Young, there's my unsung zero, unsung hero, excuse me.
Yep. Absolutely massive moment for him to get that single and get the runner to third.
And Jorge Polanco ain't getting the third on that play. No way. Jorge Polanco does a lot of
things well. Run ain't one of them. Running is not his strength. And yeah, rips that baseball.
Rips that baseball up the middle. Then J.P. Crawford gets hit.
hit. And I have to be honest with you, and Tick brought it up. I was disappointed when he got hit,
not because I don't believe in Julio Rodriguez, but because that run scores if that ball doesn't hit
JP. It would go right behind him. Dylan Moore gets into home plate easily. We don't have to worry.
But no, it hits him. Base is loaded for Julio Rodriguez in the top of the ninth inning.
And if you're a Julio skeptic, there's a nice way to put it.
If you're a Julio skeptic, you are, you're nervous.
You're nervous, right?
And he's facing one of the very best closers in baseball.
Yon Duran gives everybody a run.
And he falls behind O2 and he swings at two pitches that I don't believe were strikes.
You guys can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe those pitches were outside of the strike zone.
And I'm thinking, oh, no.
Well, I'm thinking, oh, no.
And then I'm thinking, oh, my gosh, thank goodness.
We have Cal Raleigh coming to the plate afterwards, right?
But nope, as good of an out for a Seattle Mariner player as I've seen this year.
And sure, it wasn't a great pitch.
But the fact that he got that ball in the air and more than deep enough,
it was going to score Dylan more easily, the fact he got that ball in the air,
not all clutch moments are just hits and dingers.
That's a huge moment, a huge moment.
And as Sinebon brings up today, he's the bookends.
He has the first RBI and the last RBI.
It just got the job done.
You don't have to go two for four with a homer and a double when four RBIs every game.
You don't have to do that.
And as a few of you brought up, the twins played well today.
The Minnesota twins were probably the better team in this.
came outside of that third inning, right?
But that third inning happened, and that's why big innings matter.
Shout out to Donvin Solano for another massive moment.
But kudos to Julio for getting the job done there and giving Matt Brash that lead and him
taking care of it.
This is a great win.
These last three wins are up there.
They're up there.
And it's awesome to see that they didn't need to rely on starting.
pitching and they didn't need to rely on scoring 11 runs either. You've got to win these types of
games, right? You've got to win these games where not everything's at its best. Not everything was
terrible. The bullpen was fantastic tonight. Castillo battles, but it wasn't like a plus efforts,
and it certainly wasn't an a plus effort from the offense on the road playing a team that's due for
wins, you get this kind of win. And these are the type of things that playoff teams do.
This is what playoff teams do.
I love this one.
I'd also love, again, if you would hit like.
If you haven't subscribed yet, please do.
Make sure you're checking out Ty and Colby every single weekday.
They do such a fantastic job.
Trade deadlines coming up.
They're going to be talking about a bunch of that stuff,
but just the everyday stuff they're excellent at.
And me and Anders do a pretty good job, I guess, at doing the recaps as well.
Somebody said some really nice things about me as a host, by the way.
Really love that.
Really love that.
there's another nice thing we love you chris locked on mariners is a great show we love it we love it
i have had an absolute blast over this first month i'll leave you with a shorter one um but yeah
this was a great win and you guys enjoy the rest of your day
