Starting point is 00:00:58 So we're going to talk about what happened last night, unfortunately. We'll also discuss Bryce Miller, Lennam back on the injured list. Yeah, things are not going great right now in Marrarsland, but we're going to talk through it together, as we always do here on Lockdown M. So let's start here. It was four nothing diamondbacks. Marys were down to their final out of this game.
Starting point is 00:01:23 Donovan Solano with an RBI, Cole Young with an RBI, and then a two-run, home run, from Dominic Canzone, 450-foot bomb with a sick bat flip. to knot things up at four apiece. J.P. Crawford was able to get on base after that. Julio was able to get on base after that. Macau Raleigh with basically a swinging butt, ends that threat to potentially take the lead there in the ninth inning. It's a pretty rough night for Cal,
Starting point is 00:01:51 which we haven't really said at all this year. But, you know, it's bound to happen. But as soon as I saw Canzon hit that home run, I literally texted you this, Colby. I knew they were going to lose. Because they always lose whenever they get some sicko unhinged home run like this from, you know, an unexpected source, right? I think about Mike Ford in Baltimore, Jake Lamb on Eitro weekend, Colton Wong in Minnesota a couple of years ago, Dominic Canzone against the Orioles a couple of years ago with another sick bat flip.
Starting point is 00:02:31 The list goes on and on and on. The only example I can think of where the mayor has actually paid on. off one of those kinds of home runs late in the game with a win was when Cade Marlowe hit that grand slam in Anaheim. But that's all I have for you on that front. For the most part, the mayor is just blow these kinds of home runs time and time and time again. I guess my question to you is would you have preferred that they just got shut out last night
Starting point is 00:02:58 instead of letting this thing linger like if you knew they were going to lose either way, right? would you have preferred to just save the 20 or 30 minutes of extra baseball we got to watch? I don't know. I will say this. There are no moral victories in professional sports. So the fact that you were able to get a 4-0 game into extras when you were down to your last strike, that's not anything. That doesn't mean anything. Like you lost.
Starting point is 00:03:31 At the end of the day, you lost. and you were pretty much lifeless for what ended up being, what, 10 of the 11 innings of that game where you just couldn't get anything going off from Merrill Kelly. Like, it literally took the star closer of the Diamondbacks leaving the game with an injury to even give you a shot to show any kind of offensive prowess whatsoever. and it only lasted for five hitters. So it happened to line up really well for him.
Starting point is 00:04:05 And then it happened to line up really well for a couple of Gino walkoffs. And I was sure that that's what was going to happen. And, yeah, it was almost like the perfect revenge game for everybody. Like Bargis pitched pretty well in his first inning. And, you know, Kanzone had the big home run to tie it. And it's like, oh, well, here comes Gino to counterpunch. And no, none of that happened. And it's just, it's frustrating.
Starting point is 00:04:30 it's annoying that this team can't play well for more than, you know, one inning a game. And you pretty much have to make that one inning count for everything. And then, you know, you get somehow, some way, Dan Wilson's going to find a way to negatively impact his team's chances of winning. And he did that again last night. So I don't know. Last night's game had a little bit of everything, including something we've become all too accustomed to right now. That is a Mariners loss. that was primarily laid at the feet of the offense and the bullpen.
Starting point is 00:05:07 Yeah. I don't look for moral victories, especially not when you've lost. Now I think what, 14 of your last 19 games or something like that? Like, I don't care. Yeah. Any kind of fight or any kind of energy or whatever. Because you played dead. You played dead for, you know, again, 10 of the 11 innings.
Starting point is 00:05:27 And really, you play dead for all but five hitters. in the entire game so yeah i i don't know i don't really care but i mean if you're going to go through all that work to force extras and and actually get even to the 11th after you fail to score in the 10th you kind of have to win that game like you have yeah yeah well and then you know all the extra usage that you put on andrews munoz and carlos vargas and how that impacts the rest of the series and all yeah it's just uh in a way and it's And maybe it's also because, you know, I live in the Eastern Time Zone. So these games are a lot later for me than they are for most of you that I'm just like,
Starting point is 00:06:08 I kind of wish that they just got shut out last night, you know, gone about my night a bit earlier. Honestly, the ninth inning kind of saved me from getting on this show and yelling because it went from, I was just pissed off watching the game for the first 26 outs. And then I started laughing hysterically. Dom-Kan zone hit that home run. And then when they lost, I just kind of did the same thing I do always whenever they lose.
Starting point is 00:06:38 It's just kind of laugh about it because it's like, yeah, of course they did. Well, it's the Mariners, right? Of course they did that. Of course, of course they lost when they got a game tying home run from Dom Kanzone on the night that he got called up. But, Todd, do you want to know the good news? What?
Starting point is 00:06:52 As soon as the Mariners take the lead in last night's game, we have Matt Brash available. That's right. We will talk about that in just a moment. But first, reminder, this episode of the Lockdown Marys podcast is brought to you by Supply House. Get the supplies you need from the site made for the skilled trades. Supply House. Be sure to tune in to the Mayor's Post. cast with Anderson Hurst and Christopher Crawford available on both the lockdown Marrars YouTube and podcast feeds. Do we know what the Marra's record is since the Marra's postcast started? I just thought about that.
Starting point is 00:08:15 I know it's not good. Yeah. Clearly it's their fault and you guys should let them know about that. You should also let us know in the comments below because I'm too lazy to do it. Maybe one of you have the time to do it to figure out what the record actually is, what the, what the Mara's record actually is since the start of the Marrers postcasts.
Starting point is 00:08:38 So, hey, before we get back into talking about last night's game and more specifically, before I give Colby the floor to drag Dan Wilson mercilessly, let's talk about feeding America. Feeding America is a pretty great cause. Is that right, Colie? It's as great as Dan Wilson is bad, managing a bullpen.
Starting point is 00:09:03 That's pretty great. It's pretty great. If the mariners aren't going to feed our soul and at the very least we should feed some people who are actually hungry. That's right. That's right. That's right. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:15 So we're raising money. We're partnering with feeding America to raise money to help feed Americans in our country. Sadly, one in five children is food insecure. They do not know where their next meal is going to come from or when they're going to have it. over 50 million people in this country face food insecurity as well. So feeding America partners with wholesalers and farmers and the like to buy food at a great discount. And because of that, they are able to turn every dollar they raise into 10 meals for those facing food insecurity.
Starting point is 00:09:49 Now we're hitting the summer months. Food is getting more expensive. Kids are out of school. So a lot of children are losing access to their one meal that they might get during the year. So it's more important than ever right now to support the cause and help put food, you know, give food to people who desperately desperately need it. We're all human. We all deserve food and we all deserve to be nourished more than the mariners are giving us right now, but tangibly nourished. And that's why we're partnering with feeding America. It's great bank for your buck. Like I said, it's 10 meals for every dollar that we raise. It doesn't get any better than that and right now I think we're at about
Starting point is 00:10:31 what is 42 4,400. We are at $4,361 raised. Yeah, but donations are slowing down faster than the Mariners run game. So I don't know. Maybe you guys just don't care. I don't know. But anyways,
Starting point is 00:10:47 in all seriousness, we've already passed our goal that we set up at the beginning of this thing. So we're running it through the All-Star break. So again, there will be a link down in the description. Donate if you can. please all the money goes straight to feeding America. If you want to donate or you already have or you just can't afford to you right now,
Starting point is 00:11:07 that's totally fine. Ty and I are also donating 10 cents for every new subscriber that we get over the course of our fundraiser. I think we're up over 100 subscribers now. Yeah. I think we're close. We're close to there. We started this at 13,500.
Starting point is 00:11:29 And I think we're at 13,647 last time I checked. So we're, we have 90 we've added 95. So 95 meals. You just click that subscribe button. 93 meals. I'm about it math. Yeah. Click the subscribe button and you're donating a meal to somebody who needs it.
Starting point is 00:11:48 So yeah, either please donate directly using our link so we can keep track of how much we've raised or, you know, feel free to subscribe. And if you've done all that already and you want to continue to help. share these videos, share the link with your friends and your family and your social media followers and all that. Let's see how high we can get it. A couple years ago, we got to $15,000. And that was with probably about half the subs that we have now. So, I mean, I'm not saying it's a competition, but if it is, you got some work to do.
Starting point is 00:12:19 So, you know. Yeah. And clearly, if you donate, the mirrors will play better. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yes, that is totally how that's worked. since we've started this fundraiser. The Mariners are playing fantastic ball.
Starting point is 00:12:31 That's, that's right. That's right. I mean, you can't slow down or else the bearer's offense will slow down. And they're clearly both connected. Hey, George donated $50 yesterday. It says, great cause. Thank you so much, George. Anonymous also donated $50, saying this is rad.
Starting point is 00:12:47 I appreciate your genuine appeal to humanity in these trying times. T.J. donated 10. And Blaine donated 20, saying Colby's big dumper tattoo on his butt will feed Barroners fans for generations. I agree. Definitely not happening. But if we get to 20,000, definitely not on my backside, definitely not a big dumper, but maybe something. 100,000. No. 500,000. No. One million dollars. Yes. All right. All right, there we go. Get us to one million dollars. Colby's getting the big dumper tattoo on his on his backside. Okay.
Starting point is 00:13:28 I got to remember that we, uh, we play along with FCC rules here. Uh, all right. So, uh, keep that of mind by the way,
Starting point is 00:13:36 Colby, for this, uh, upcoming segment here, uh, Dan Wilson, Matt Brash, go.
Starting point is 00:13:44 You guys know I don't like to be confrontational. Uh, so I'm trying to think of a polite way to say Dan Wilson is a blithering idiot. Mm, without it sounding like I'm saying he's a blithering idiot. But, um,
Starting point is 00:13:59 for a guy, who obviously is not an idiot. He sure does idiotic things kind of a lot. For example, saving your second best reliever or a fictional lead you never had only to watch your
Starting point is 00:14:13 fourth, fifth best reliever, working in his second inning of work, having already thrown 40 pitches or so, going up against the heart of the Diamondbacks order, one of the best offenses
Starting point is 00:14:29 and baseball. Yeah, let's stick with the fourth or fifth best guy. Even though we know that our second best guy is 100% available, he's been thrown in the bullpen all evening. He's ready to go. And with the bases loaded and won out with the winning run on third, you don't need a fly ball, you don't need a ground ball, you need a strikeout. Let me introduce you to Matt Brash. Dan, apparently you don't know who that is, one of the premier strikeout men in all of baseball. one of the filthiest pitches in all of baseball. Easily your best option.
Starting point is 00:15:08 Should have pitched the 10th, whatever. You got away with one. Good for you. Should have started the 11th. You got one out. And you still have a shot to win that game somehow. Brash is ready to go. He's right there.
Starting point is 00:15:21 He's the number two. Nah. Let's stick with the 30th pitch of Carlos Vargas against Josh Naylor, a power hitting lefty because we need to save Brash just in case we hypothetically might get a lead at some point. It is mind-boggling stupid to save Brash for a lead, period.
Starting point is 00:15:49 Because here's the thing, right? Let's say you get the lead. What is worse, Ty? Is it worse to give up the game tying run? Or is it worse to give up the game winning run? That's hard. It is simple thought. Like it is simple logic.
Starting point is 00:16:09 If you use Brash until you get a lead, then if the guy who you bring in surrenders the lead, you still get to keep playing baseball. In a tie game in extras, if you surrender the lead, you lose. The game is over and you have Matt Brash
Starting point is 00:16:28 sitting in the bullpen still. And by the way, you might have burned him for today too. Because he pitched on Sunday. And then yesterday he threw a lot in the bullpen. This guy coming off of surgery, he might not be available today anyways. Because you didn't use him. So you might as well have used it. So I mean, also, by the way, Andres Munoz got one, two, three in what, eight pitches?
Starting point is 00:16:53 Very quick inning. I think it's okay to ask him to go another in extras with the winning run on second base. but no no let's go to vargas who's been good don't get me wrong he's not that rash jerry jerry made the call right he put the call in to to aura farm for the uh the ultimate revenge game right we got the can zone home run now let's let vargas go out there and throw screw it five extra innings he already got the oar win he's he's just shut down the We got to ensure that Carlos Vargas shows up in the wind column of this game. It's clearly what happens.
Starting point is 00:17:41 It is beyond baffling. Yeah. That anybody could be this bad at their job and avoid criticism for this long, as Dan Wilson has done for a majority of the fan base. Now, I will say that ice is thawing pretty quick here. I am seeing more people being critical of Dan's decision making. I see it a lot. Maybe I just follow the right people.
Starting point is 00:18:02 outwardly, I see it a lot. And the number of times we've got in the comments are like, you should apologize to Dan Wilson. That's gone down quite a bit over the last month, hasn't it? Huh. Yeah. I wonder why. Process is the only thing that matters for a manager because it is the only
Starting point is 00:18:18 thing they can control. They cannot control the outcome. They can't. Nope. So all you can control is that you put your best players in the best position to help you best win a baseball game. and Dan Wilson last night went had one of his best players available
Starting point is 00:18:37 the absolute correct spot to use him in and instead went to a lesser player why for stupid reasons to save somebody for when you have the lead that you might not ever have it's beyond idiotic and frankly I'm tired of it and again if you're going to be
Starting point is 00:18:57 if you're great shield from criticism is that you're a great, you know, clubhouse guy and you're a culture guy and you're a communication guy and the players respect you. And that lets you off the hook for being a moron when it comes to managing your bullpen and when it comes to riding the lineup and all that stuff. You can't play like the Mariners have played for the last month and be above criticism because the Mariners come out and play lifeless. They're gutless. Things go wrong. They shut down. And aside from a five-hitter stretch last night, that's exactly what happened again.
Starting point is 00:19:31 So you can't manage the bullpen. You can't write the lineup correctly. And your boys have come out flat for about a month straight now with no energy, no life. They're not punching back. Things go wrong. They tend to implode. And that's how they get blown out by bad teams, the first sign of trouble. They get swept by bad teams at home.
Starting point is 00:19:53 These are all things that point to some kind of problem in the culture of the clubhouse, whatever. Right. There's something wrong there. Is all of that on Dan? No. To be fair, no, it's not. But also to be fair, if you're going to make bad decisions in game, then what happens off the field matters that much more.
Starting point is 00:20:16 You have to be great at that. And for years, Scott was really great at that. But I do want to point this out because I know people are screaming it. We cannot talk about the failure of Dan Wilson without talking about the failure of John Stanton, Chris Larson, Jerry DePoto, Justin Hollander, because this team also has a talent issue. And talent is acquiring that talent, is Jerry and Justin's job and giving the resources necessary
Starting point is 00:20:43 to acquire enough talent to hide some of the warts of a first year manager and of an incomplete ball club. That is the job of Chris Larson and John Stan and the ownership group. So yes, there's a talent problem here as well. But when there's a talent problem, the in field or on field management becomes that much more important because you can't afford to make silly mistakes like Dan did last night and you know honestly it's not even a mistake because
Starting point is 00:21:08 he does it over and over again this is a choice he's making repeatedly and it bites him in the butt every single time and he keeps on making it yeah and fairness to dan sanity yeah exactly in fairness to Dan it's been a very tough year for Dan to manage this is a very difficult ball club for really anyone to manage with all the injuries and the lack of talent that was generally there already. This team's failure. This team's failures ultimately lead back to
Starting point is 00:21:37 ownership in the front office. Yep. And, you know, I'll just leave it on this note before we go to the next segment. I said this last year. Say it again. Unfortunately, this team looks like a team that gets people fired.
Starting point is 00:21:55 Yep. That's the point that we're at right now. so do with that what you will all right uh brice miller has landed back on the aisle we'll talk about that in just a moment but first a reminder this episode of the lockdown era's podcast is brought to you by monarch money ever check your bank account and wonder where did all my money go between dining out online shopping and entertainment it's easy to lose track that's where monarch money comes in your personal cfo giving you full visibility and control over your finances monarch money isn't just a budgeting app it's a complete financial command center. Starting point is 00:23:01 That's monarchmoney.com promo code LOC, KED, ON, MLB for half off your first year. And you're listening to the Locked On Merr's podcast. So Bryce Miller is back on the IL. It's right elbow inflammation. Same thing that he was dealing with a couple weeks ago. Dan Wilson said after the game last night that the cortisone shot that they gave him just didn't work as they had hoped. Logan Evans is back up with the club.
Starting point is 00:23:29 We pretty much saw this coming because he got reported that he was there in Arizona on the taxi squad. So sure enough, that is the corresponding move here for Miller. So Evans will start tonight. We will start tomorrow as a result of the roster move. Yesterday on Mailbag Monday, we got asked if this is, if it's time to pull the plug on Bryce Miller's season. And Colby, you and I were kind of pretty much.
Starting point is 00:23:55 both in agreement that, you know, give him another start or two and then reassess the situation. Well, he's on the IL now. So I guess I'll re-ask you that question. Should they pull the plug on Bryce Miller season at this point? Yeah. It's hard not to say yes. Because they tried the cortisone shot and it only,
Starting point is 00:24:24 I mean, statistically it didn't really help at all. but it only lasted two starts before you're willing to pull a plug on that. And so what it seems like you need now is like the next logical step would be, okay, well, he needs more than the minimum stay on the IL. He needs a couple months. But the bodies are still going to be floating around in the elbow in a couple months. They're not going to reattach themselves or whatever.
Starting point is 00:24:50 They're not going to disappear. You need surgery to get rid of them. So I don't know what rest is really going to do for, for Miller. So they've tried the cortisone shot, which is supposed to help manage the discomfort. Maybe it did, but the results weren't any better. And again, the bodies, the bones, spurs, whatever they are, they're still floating around and they're not going away. There's nothing you can do about that until you take them out. And Bryce has mentioned that the surgery would knock him out for the season. We don't, I don't know for sure if that's the case because I'm not a doctor. I know
Starting point is 00:25:20 surprising. I would assume, though, that that he is just reiterating what he's been told. Yeah. Right. And so to me, the only reason I see for them not to just get the surgery now and kind of get it over with is if they think that he could help them out of the bullpen at some point after this IL stint. And could he? I mean, yeah, he might be able to. We've seen him in, you know, one, two inning stretches go 97 with a wicked curveball and splitter. Like the first inning of his starts have been pretty good. in terms of stuff. So if you only need him to do that, but is it worth doing that so that he can give you maybe 18 to 20 innings down the stretch out of the bullpen?
Starting point is 00:26:07 I don't know. It's interesting that they just put him on the aisle right now. They haven't said he'll have surgery or anything like that. Usually that would be a determination. So it seems to me like they're still trying to not get the surgery. They want to give something else a shot. And I suppose if you're going to be knocked out for the season, like if you have the surgery next week you'll be out for the season you don't lose much by
Starting point is 00:26:31 waiting a month or six weeks because I mean you're just a month or six weeks further out from recovery and a month to six weeks out from November is still January. Yeah. It's still the middle of the winter. But why delay the inevitable? Well, I mean, that's the thing is that I think the only reason they would do that is if they really do think that he can help them at some point, even if it's not in the rotation, but again like that's for like 15 20 innings yeah no and I just I don't think that the current
Starting point is 00:27:04 version of Miller even with you know again we've seen him look pretty good and one to two inning spurts here and there over the course of the year I just I don't think that's super beneficial to you to ultimately delay the inevitable here plus like all right if this surgery and this what was it three weeks ago that he said if he had the surgery it would it would knock him out for the whole year So if that was the case three weeks ago, well, there's 111 days left between now and the first day after the final game of the season. And then from September 29th, which is the first day after the final game of the season to February 14th, which is around the time that pitchers and catchers typically report, that's 138 days. Yeah. It's not much of a difference here.
Starting point is 00:27:48 So again, like I said yesterday, get the surgery now relatively soon and don't run the risk that this. this might impact his ability to ramp up in time for 2026. Don't let this linger into 2026. They might be looking at that and being like, well, it's going to take about 110 days for him to be able to throw a baseball again or whatever, right? Yeah. So, well, there's 130 some odd days in the offseason. And there's 170 some odd days between the last game and the first game of the next season.
Starting point is 00:28:20 That's plenty of time to have the surgery and get back and all that. But again, he also said this like three weeks ago when it was. Right. But I mean, what I'm saying is, but yeah. Right. But again, you can still, in theory, have the surgery the day after the season and in theory be throwing in spring training a couple months, you know, a couple days into spring camp. But again, you have to build that all back up because obviously they throw in the winter as well. So maybe he misses the first month of whatever.
Starting point is 00:28:52 But it does seem like it's a pretty simple procedure. like it's not like this is a long-term risk here is apparently again I'm not a doctor I really I know as far as far as we know there's no ligament damage there's nothing like that it's a bone spur or something is irritating the up the backside at the elbow or yeah yeah it's a way side yeah yeah Hollander said that it's away from the ligaments the scary stuff yeah yeah but yeah so it becomes about pain tolerance and it becomes about effectiveness. Well, I don't, the pain tolerance may be there for Bryce. He's certainly, you know, taking the ball every fifth day outside of the one IL
Starting point is 00:29:36 stint, but the effectiveness isn't there at all. And so I don't know what the plan is here. I do think it's now, it could just be because it literally just happened this morning, like just got announced this morning that like later today or sometime in the next week, they'll just announce the surgery is going to happen. Yeah. But it is interesting that they just placed them on the IL and they've just kind of been like, yeah, the core zone shot didn't really work the way we were hoping and that's it. Normally it's like, yeah, you know, we think it's just best for Bryce and for everybody if he gets that cleaned up right now or if he, you know, here's the plan.
Starting point is 00:30:09 And maybe we get that from Dan in pregame because we're still three, four hours away from when he would actually talk to the media and maybe he'll have more info there. Although, you know, Dan is not exactly the most forthcoming with information. So yeah, it's weird. I think at this stage you probably should just shut them down. I don't know what the big prize is to be had. And the fact that Hancock is pitching well enough and the fact that Logan Evans is pitching well enough and that you can always go get, you know,
Starting point is 00:30:38 an Andrew Heaney type at the deadline or somebody like that if you really want a veteran in that number five spot. I think now is as good a time as any to just go ahead and get that done. So especially, well, we think Logan's going to be back soon. We hope Logan's going to be back soon and effective. We'll see. I think he makes his next rehab start today or tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:31:04 So we'll see how that all goes. But I think the best thing is just to really play it safe, get that surgery now, and increase the odds that he's ready to go by spring training in 2026 as much as you possibly can. All right.
