Starting point is 00:00:00 Before the season, we picked five Mariners each as our guys, our flag players. And now that the first full month of the season is in the books, we're going to see if we picked them right. Colby, hit it. You are Locked-on Mariners. Your daily Seattle Mariners podcast. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Ahoy, Sailors, and it's Thursday, April 30th, 2026.
Starting point is 00:00:31 My name is Tadine Gazzalus, and I'm joined, as always, by my host, Colby Patnode, on today's show. we're going to talk about how the Mariners might handle things of Matt Brash has to go on the injured list. We'll also answer a couple of questions from our Discord server. We're going to start with our first monthly check-in on our flag players. The Mariners both Colby and I deemed as our guys going into the season. Now, Colby, I don't know how up-to-date you are on both the F-4 and B-War totals of your flag players, but how do you think you guys are doing so far? Well, first of all, I'd like to say I greatly prefer B-war because I think that's going to benefit me the most.
Starting point is 00:01:05 with the uh, spoiler, spoiler alert, it will. Yeah. It will. Yeah. Um, I, to be honest,
Starting point is 00:01:13 I don't remember my flag players, except for Cole Young. I think I picked Luis, right? No, I picked Luis. Oh, thank God.
Starting point is 00:01:21 I got that wrong on Ben's show last night. Um, I call you, did I take Bryce Miller? You took Bryce Miller. Did I take J.P. Crawford or did you? Here, we'll just,
Starting point is 00:01:32 we'll go over the list here. So you took, you took, you took Colerner. You took Cole Young, Luke Rayleigh, J.P. Crawford, Bryce Miller, Jose Ferrear. Okay. I think I did okay. Yeah, not too bad. Yeah. And then I took Randy Orozerana, Brennan, Donovan, Colt Emerson, Luis Castillo, Carlos Fargus. Yeah, the Colt Emerson one hasn't materialized yet. But then again, neither is my Bryce Miller. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Yeah, I don't know. I feel like I'm probably doing better than you in B-War, but my hunch is you're probably doing better in F-Hore if I had to guess.
Starting point is 00:02:05 but yeah I'm not sure I think that's pretty even list honestly well the Carlos Vargas oh yeah you lost Vargas too yeah I forgot I lost Vargas on an opening day
Starting point is 00:02:17 yeah brutal brutal so you've only got three guys representing your list right now yeah and I don't know if Vargas is gonna pitch this year or not we haven't really heard anything about him
Starting point is 00:02:29 he had placed on the 60 is what you're saying so So yes and no. So let's just go through it. So F-4-wise, Randy Rosarana is worth one F-4 flat. Okay. Brennan Donovan, despite missing the last week or so, at 0.6, F-4,
Starting point is 00:02:51 because he was one of the best hitters in baseball before he got hurt. Obviously, Cole Emerson hasn't played at the big league level yet. Luis Castillo, despite the struggle, is actually still at 0.3F4. Yeah, F. 4 is broken. Yeah, we'll get into the disparity there between F4 and B-WR on Lewis in a moment. And then obviously, again, Carlos Fargus hasn't pitched yet. I don't know if he's going to pitch.
Starting point is 00:03:17 So that is 1.9 F-4 for me. For you, for you, Cole Young, 0.9, F-4, Luke Rayleigh. Yeah, Luke Rayleigh, 0.3, J.P. Crawford, 0.3. Jose Ferrer 0.3 which is good for 1.8 F.4 so I'm beating you by 0.1F4 yeah sure and then we get into BWR
Starting point is 00:03:42 by two full wins in BWR so Randy or Rosarana is worth 1.3 BWR okay Brennan Donovan is worth yeah Brennan Donovan's worth 0.7 so a slight bump there from from the F4.1
Starting point is 00:03:59 Luis Castillo negative 0.7 B-war. So basically, Brennan Donovan is eliminated from the equation, and all I'm getting here is Randy or Rosa. Yeah, it's just Randy. Yeah, for me. I beat you with Cole Young alone. Yeah, 1.8B war for Cole Young.
Starting point is 00:04:17 Luke Rayleigh, 0.2B. War. J.P. Crawford, the same as this F.4, point three, and then Jose Ferrer point four. So you are beating me right now, 2.7B. War to 1.3B. B-war. So it's not even close. So even though that I'm I have the slight edge in F-4, I'd say that you're you're kind of dominating this thing right now. Sure. I mean, Louise going through his rough stretch early on doesn't help. And obviously Cole Young probably not going to be this
Starting point is 00:04:45 good all year. Whereas like Randy, yeah, I mean, Randy could be good all year. But yeah, I think I think Colt Emerson is going to be your back in this. I need him to cook. In general, like last year, remember, we both wanted to take J.P. Crawford first. Yeah. He performed very well last year. And this year, we both wanted to take Cole Young first. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:15 And he's performed. So like when Ty and I both have the same number one guy, you're welcome. It's the other problems. It's the other areas we seem to have problem picking guys at. So here's the crazy. thing specifically with Cole Young's B-Wore. So yesterday before the game, Daniel Kramer posted a screenshot of the B-Wore leaders,
Starting point is 00:05:35 and Cole Young was at 1.9. He was like 0.2 off from the Major League lead. Somehow he lost 0.1 yesterday. After driving in three runs, having the game-winning head. Yeah. It's just one of those things. This is why you can't track war every single day. You just have to look at the end of the year and be like, okay.
Starting point is 00:05:58 him and it usually feels about right you know at the end of the year like was he was jp croffer a three one player like yeah yeah i think that's about right um so yeah war is is funny that way i do know that he's also i believe cole young is behind like trout and yordon i think he's out of like james wood so yeah cole's been you know obviously exceptional and and all-nall pretty good start for the flag player guys except for louise i mean you took him and there's a good chance to go on the i l because three, four, three,
Starting point is 00:06:30 fifths of the guys you took are on the IL or suck, uh, right now. And, and three of them aren't on the big league roster right now. One of them stinks. And that,
Starting point is 00:06:40 and that was, uh, that was how last year kind of went as well, remember? I took Victor. I took, who else did I take that, that also got hurt.
Starting point is 00:06:51 I took, oh, Ryan Bliss. I took Ryan Bliss. I took Ryan Bliss and he got hurt. Yeah. Yeah. Didn't you also take Mitch
Starting point is 00:06:58 Garver. Anyways. Yeah. Yeah. I bought into the odd year Garver thing. Yeah. Yeah. My strategy of just taking good players seems to work pretty well. I mean, I went more with that strategy this time around.
Starting point is 00:07:14 You know, I was like, all right, I'm going to take, I'm going to hit some doubles here. I'm going to take Randy. I'm going to take Brennan Donovan. Donovan felt like a bit of a stretch to let you have, but okay, whatever. I felt like I was hitting a double with Luis, but so far that's not the case. Yeah, I mean, we'll see.
Starting point is 00:07:29 Again, it's early, and Luis does have these stretches seemingly every year. And he always tends to bounce back from them, Willie, this year. I mean, I don't know. I guess we're going to find out. He's got about two or three starts left before the Mariners have to make the big decision with Bryce and Hancock and him, if they have to make a big decision. Obviously, you know, things tend to work out in that regard. but yeah it's you know pretty good month first month for for our guys quote unquote
Starting point is 00:08:02 you know just remember just in case you guys didn't hear the exercise at the time neither of us could pick Julio we couldn't pick Cal we couldn't pick Woo Lou I think Gilbert and then yeah Josh Naylor yeah so there were the five big you know like all-star guys like we couldn't take them all right well we are going to answer a couple of your questions from the Discord in just a moment. But first a reminder of this episode of the longtime errors podcast is brought to you by Calci. Baseball season is here.
Starting point is 00:08:36 And now you can trade every game on Calci. Tap the link in the description or go to lockdown mariners. That supercast.com to learn more. Kronos wants to know Alex Hoppe's debut started amazing, but he tailed off right at the end, which of him sitting for a week plus,
Starting point is 00:09:55 his natural pitcher profile, or the field conditions led to the end of his performance most. I think it's the second option there. It's this natural pitcher profile. I think you got the full Alex Hoppy experience that night. You got nasty stuff. You got some nasty sliders. You got the strikeouts.
Starting point is 00:10:13 You saw the upside of the swing and miss that he could potentially bring to this bullpen. But you also saw how much of a struggle it can be for him to find the strike zone with any sort of consistency. Yeah, I mean, also part of it. though is that, you know, obviously he had to throw 40 pitches, you know. Yeah, that's the other thing too. Right. And obviously it's a cold, windy, rainy night as well. So you wonder, you know, once the adrenaline wears down of making your debut and you're kind of in it, you know, it was an overall a success because he showed the swing and miss stuff, which you might desperately need now, depending on the Matt Brash injury situation. but yeah I think it's mostly like
Starting point is 00:10:59 that's part of who Hoppe is like he is going to have really good stuff but their command and control is still iffy and then you know at a certain point your 20 some odd pitches into your debut and you're down by four or five at that point it's raining it's wet it's like I got to throw strikes you know I can't nibble I got to put the ball
Starting point is 00:11:20 you know in the middle of the plate and see what happens and he did that so when he was able to you know pitch off the plate he got a ton of swing and miss, especially on that slider. And as we mentioned, or as I mentioned on socials, like that slider seems to be the change that the Mariners have made. He's gone very slider heavy and AAA. But yeah, I thought he looked really good overall anyways. But yeah, it's just kind of a rough way to end that debut.
Starting point is 00:11:44 But it was fun to watch for the first couple of hitters. And then after that, I think it's just damage control and I lost some command. And now it's like, I kind of got to put these pitches in the middle of the plate because if I don't, like, it might be going back to AAA. So I do think it's mostly the profile of the pitcher, but there are other factors that we need to at least throw out there as potential explanations or factors in why the outing kind of got away from them there. All right.
Starting point is 00:12:13 Next question here from COG. I know baseball always has a way of working things out, but if you were in charge of the roster, how would you handle a potential logjam long term at starting pitcher if Anderson and Castillo and Hancock continue on their respective trajectories and how do you get Colt playing time if slash when he's ready?
Starting point is 00:12:31 It's a great problem to have, but a problem we haven't seen the Marriss have with this regime. Because we've talked so much about the Hancock thing and so much about the starting rotation, the more interesting question here to me is what do you do with Colt right now, especially, you know, it seems like Brennan Donovan's going to return at some point
Starting point is 00:12:50 on this homestand. Cole Young is one of the best players in baseball right now. Now, JP, obviously, they're not going to move off of him at least any time soon. So, yeah, so how do you get playing time for Cole Emerson? You don't. I mean, he's not hitting right now, really. No, he's dealt with the little wrist thing as well. Like the numbers are getting better steadily, but still have some swing and miss issues that he needs to work through.
Starting point is 00:13:18 Again, he's been fine. He's been actually for a 20-year-old, he's been quite good in AAA, but he hasn't been been blowing the doors off of that league and that's fine. But also right now, like, there's nowhere to play him. Colt Emerson is not one of your nine best players. He's just not. And he's sitting in a little bit of a slide right now. 232, 351, 427, 101 WRC Plus. That's where the overall numbers are at now. Right. So again, there's still work to do. You want to make sure he's healthy. So the risk thing, that can be a little bit of an issue if it lingers. So, you know, you need to keep an eye on that. But again, he's not one of your nine best players right now.
Starting point is 00:13:55 at 20 years old, that's not a problem. He's, and you call him up, he's going to play every day. He has to. Like, you cannot sit Emerson three times a week. And so obviously the answer is third, and maybe you move Donovan to the outfield, make Luke Rayleigh more of a pure platoon player. But if Donovan's got this, you know, this groin, you know, midsection injury thing, do you want to put him in the outfield?
Starting point is 00:14:21 Is that actually going to help him? I kind of doubt it. So, you know, it's Donovan's going to play every day. Cole Young's going to play every day. J.P. Crawford's going to play every day. There's nowhere to play him. It really is that simple. You don't have a spot for him right now.
Starting point is 00:14:37 And he hasn't earned the call up yet. Again, he's been fine, certainly. No reason for concern or anything like that. But he hasn't earned it yet. And you're not shuffling your roster for him to get playing time. And by the time he does earn it, it's probably at the end of this month. if he has a good rest of May, then maybe we can start to have that conversation.
Starting point is 00:14:58 At that point, the question is still, okay, where does he play? And is there an injury? Or is there some kind of, I don't know, because the easy answer,
Starting point is 00:15:10 really the only answer is you move Donovan to right field or left field, right? You move him to the corner outfield. Donovan's got a groin. He had a, what was the other thing he had? He had the groin for the IL. Then he had,
Starting point is 00:15:21 was it a hippie? It was a hip thing. and then obviously he's coming off of the hernia surgery, which that's probably tied to the whole groin thing that he's dealing with right now. All core, right? All core injuries. You want to put him out in left field?
Starting point is 00:15:35 Right field. Yeah, I mean. Probably be right field because I don't want Randy out in right field. No, I mean, Randy DH at that point. But then obviously like Kanzon's probably playing right field then. So yeah, there's just not really a spot form, unfortunately, or fortunately, which means the Mariners don't have to rush him. And, yeah, I just, I don't see any opening for him unless there's an injury.
Starting point is 00:15:59 So now, if Donovan can, the nice thing is, is Donovan can play multiple spots. So if, you know, Emerson does prove that he belongs in the big leagues in the next four to six weeks or whatever, right? And Donovan proves that he can stay healthy. Maybe we see them like throw Donovan out in left field, like once a week here in the start of May. and that's kind of them easing him in and easing him back out there to open up third base. But, you know, Donovan could also play some second base. Like Donovan can play six days a week or seven days a week playing four different positions. So that's nice.
Starting point is 00:16:37 But right now you need him to be healthy before you worry about, before you even think about him, putting him in the outfield. And that's really the only path to Emerson getting regular playing time, I think. All right. So obviously Matt Brash had to leave after throwing just two pitches. in yesterday's game. He's going to get some imaging done in Seattle. That might have already happened by now. Or maybe that's tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:16:58 I don't know. But we probably won't hear anything on him until tomorrow. But if it requires an IL stent, how will the mares handle that? We'll talk about that in just a moment. But first a reminder of this episode of the Locktime Marys podcast is brought to you by Indeed and Hems. Workplace chaos.

On there, we talk Mariners, Seahawks, all that good stuff. For more information, go to patreon.com, forward slash control the zone. link in the description of this episode. So obviously I don't want to jump to any sort of conclusions here on that Brash's injury, but when something about, you know, side discomfort gets reported, you do have to worry about an oblique, stuff
Starting point is 00:20:07 like that. And especially because it's so early on in the season, and he is so important to just the club overall, not just the bullpen, but the club overall, you know, if you have an opportunity to maybe sit him down for a little while and just take care of it now rather than having it linger further and having him try to pitch through it. Maybe that's the best route to take here. So we'll see what the marries ultimately decide. We'll probably find out what their decision is tomorrow at some point.
Starting point is 00:20:37 But, Colby, if this does wind up with Brash landing on the IL, how do you think the Mariners handle all of this? What happens in the bullpen to make up for the absence of Matt Brash? Yeah, it's tough to say because they don't really have the Matt Brash replacement. Now, thankfully they were five deep, give or take in their high leverage spots. And last year they pitched all year with four deep. So if we assume that Brash is only going to be down for a couple weeks, right, then I think we mostly just see the same status quo. And then you just kind of see, you know, maybe it's.
Starting point is 00:21:21 probably the guy who gets bumped into more prash rolls, I guess would probably be for rare. But that means you need a new kind of pivot guy in the middle of the game. Is that Wilcox? I think Cooper Chriswell has earned the opportunity to do that. I think so too. So it's probably Chris Well. We know he's better suited to be like the long guy,
Starting point is 00:21:44 but he's pitched in some high leverage spots recently and pitched pretty well. So yeah, I just kind of trust. him too to throw strikes at the very least stay out of the middle of the plate. So it's probably Chriswell becomes the pivot guy for where goes to the more of the leverage stuff. And then I would assume that the arm they call up
Starting point is 00:22:03 if there is an aisle stint would probably be Zuluetta. Yeah, he's throwing 8 and 2 thirds down in Tacoma, had some walk issues, but he's also striking out a lot of guys. It's kind of the map rash profile there. Holpin could use more swing and miss. Brash wasn't getting any swing and miss this year, really, either. So you're not losing a ton there, but you're losing, obviously, the stuff and the ground ball probability and the really high floor.
Starting point is 00:22:30 You trust Matt Brash. But yeah, I mean, look, you're already down to your third reliever on the depth chart because you've already, you lost Vargas. You lost, well, you DFA'd Legamina. So now you're on your third guy. I assume that Zuluetta. Robinson Ortiz is also on the 40 man. No, they're not going to carry three lefties also. So he hasn't been that good.
Starting point is 00:22:51 He got off to a slow start. Maybe he's pitching better lately. Truth be told, I don't spend a lot of time looking at the Tacoma Rainier's stats, particularly from the pitchers, because looking at stats from the PCL is a fool's errand. Yeah. I mean, like he's got a 186 ERA down there, 481 FIP. The thing, though, is so he's throwing nine and two thirds. He struck out 10 in that time.
Starting point is 00:23:18 He's walked in nine. Yeah, it's not going to happen. So I think it's Zulueta. Domingo, not Santana. Gonzalez. Gonzalez, yes, he's also still in the 40th. They've kept him on the 40 man all winter. So they like him.
Starting point is 00:23:35 So he might get the call up. But either way, they're going to have to call somebody up from AAA to replace Brash. And then I think Ferreira probably just assume, well, I don't know if Ferrer assumes, like, direct brash situations or maybe Bizarro assumes them. Ferrer assumes the Bizarro role. You know what I mean? Like I think Bizarro is the guy or Ferrer is the guy who gets moved up. And maybe it's not a one-for-one replacement. They probably play more matchup with, you know, Gabe and Ferre and Bizarro and the 8th.
Starting point is 00:24:07 But, yeah, I mean, I do think the Mariners, I know the Mariners value that pivot position right out of the first guy out of the bullpen, essentially. And so I think do they keep Ferre there and just kind of. kind of try and roll with the three high leverage guys, or do they maybe move Chriswell up to take that role and then move Ferrer back to handle some high leverage situations, which he does have experience doing. So,
Starting point is 00:24:31 but yeah, I think, you know, if we assume Brash is going to be out, if he's going to be on the I. I think we just see Ferrear a little bit later in games, and I think we see a little bit more Chriswell, uh,
Starting point is 00:24:40 because I feel like he's earned it. And certainly I trust him more than Wilcox and Hoppe and either Zuluetta or Gonzalez or I don't know. Maybe it's, it's like, like you said, maybe it's Casey Lawrence. I don't know. Whoever they decide to call it from AAA. Yeah. So, uh, there's a couple of other options on the 40 man. There's Josh Simpson, another lefty. He's been pretty solid.
Starting point is 00:25:02 Um, and then, you know, Domingo Gonzalez, you mentioned, he's actually off to a pretty nice start, uh, down in Tacoma. And then there's Troy Taylor. No. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I've soured on Troy Taylor.
Starting point is 00:25:18 actually been okay down in Tacoma to start the year, but yeah. Troy Taylor kind of stinks. Let's just call it what it is. Yeah, yeah. It was a rough spring. It was a really rough season last year for him. Sure. I mean, like, I guess they could maybe call up like a Randy Dobnack
Starting point is 00:25:34 to kind of just fill, eat some innings in the bullpen, but I do feel like it's going to be Zuluetta or Gonzalez because, I mean, they held on to that guy all winter. But yeah, if you are, you know, pushing
Starting point is 00:25:50 Chriswell into more of that pivot role or maybe even some high leverage opportunities. I'm pushing him out of being kind of the long man. Maybe that is Casey Lawrence's music. He hasn't been particularly good in AAA, but you know, they love
Starting point is 00:26:06 to call up Casey Lawrence around the semi-year. Casey Lawrence is the Jacob Nottingham of pitchers. He's in the org for as long as he wants to be here, and then they're going to offer him a coaching job. And I mean, they kind of, you know, they have an opportunity here to make a little history with Casey Lawrence, too. I'm sure that'll factor in.
Starting point is 00:26:27 Yeah. Or separate stints with the Mariners. Yeah, we should tie the record, by the way, with Raulie Bonnis, who should be in the team Hall of Fame. Yeah, that's right. I'm going to throw Raul in there. And so should Casey Lawrence. I mean, it's Team Hall of Fame. Let's not take it too seriously, but that might be a bridge too far across.
Starting point is 00:26:46 I finally found your You found the line The Casey Lawrence demarcation line Yeah Yeah The Lawrence line I mean if it was just about how good of a dude you were Sure
Starting point is 00:26:59 We had the we had the Liotie line During the off season to determine Like who we would do an emergency Or not Speaking of Liotie We didn't do one for Ty Cummings Yeah speaking of Liotie line Yeah I know
Starting point is 00:27:12 Wow I know That's surprise surprise I mean, of course. Yeah, no, it's not polo. It's not Gino. No, it's Liotte. Yeah, it's Liotte.
Starting point is 00:27:22 Taviris. He's the guy that left him in the offseason that's just crushing it with his new Tanner. Sure. Yeah. Naturally. Get out of here. Anyways, yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:34 We'll see with Brash. I don't know if it's an aisle stint or not. I just feel like they'll probably be super cautious about it. And they'll just, yeah, let's eat it for two weeks. And then we'll get them right and then we'll call them up. You know, you hope it's not like an open. leak strain or anything and it's actually worse than it sounds because then that could be a couple months.
Starting point is 00:27:51 But we just don't have enough information right now to have a good sense of it. My best guess is that they put them on the 15-day IL and then they bring them back after that time period. He probably spends a couple weeks just to be extremely cautious. Then at that point, Ferrer probably pitches more leverage. Chris Well moves up the depth chart in terms of usage. Then they call up. I'm kind of feeling
Starting point is 00:28:15 Gonzalez because they we we circled him all winter like that's a guy they could cut and they didn't yeah like they added like what 10 10 guys to the 40 man this winter and they never put him on waivers they never DFAed him so they must really like him
Starting point is 00:28:33 so I'm kind of thinking now maybe it might be him just based on that fact alone but they also did trade for like Zuluetta and obviously Simpson and like they like all these guys otherwise I wouldn't have gotten gotten them. But yeah, we'll say. I think it'll be a righty though. I don't think they'll carry three lefties.
Starting point is 00:28:48 So I think Simpson and Ortiz are out. All right. Well, that is going to do it for our show. Thank you so much for joining us here on the Lockdown Merritt podcast.
