So we're going to make our final predictions ahead of tomorrow's deadline.
But before we do that, let's talk a little Tyler Locklear
because he is expected to join the mayor's 26-man roster today.
with Luke Rayleigh heading to the IL with back stiffness.
So there's our answer as to why Rayleigh hasn't been in the lineup for the last few days.
But while calling up Locklear is justified,
he's been one of the hottest hitters down on the miners.
It's a little weird given the timing,
considering the deadline is tomorrow.
And given that it's for a Rayleigh,
to the IL situation.
So how do you think the marries are going to make this work?
I have no idea.
Yeah.
Because like in the short term, right?
Locklear can only play first base or DH.
That's it.
Those are your options, right?
Josh Naylor is going to get pretty much all.
The only time Josh Naylor is not going to be in the lineup is if he just needs a rest day.
like it's not going to be because of matchup, right?
So Lockler's not getting at bats there unless there's a rest day.
Maybe today is that day.
Maybe they decide to give Nailer a day off,
and that's why they just decided to go with this.
But, so there's no platoon thing to be had there at first base.
So you have to D.H.
Maybe he's going to play.
And it's, well, right now Polanco is your primary DH.
Pretty much D.H is against all righties.
So, yeah, it's,
It's kind of one of those things where I don't know how this makes sense as anything other than just like, hey, you know, we need a guy for a couple days and then we'll see where we're at deadline-wise after tomorrow.
And then we can kind of make more permanent moves along our bench.
So I think that's what's going on here because when you look at it short term, unless he's starting today, you know, for nailer or for, I don't know, maybe.
Maybe he DHS today because Polo is going to play second because there's a lefty on the mound and Cole Young gets the day off.
You can get him in the game today.
But beyond today, how do you get him in the lineup?
I don't know that you do.
And I know the easy answer here is that like, well, Donovan Solano, you just DFA him and Lockler takes his role.
Well, Donovan Salano doesn't have a role right now.
Like he's not playing.
Yeah.
So there is no role for him to have.
Like there's no role for him to take because Donovan Slano really is just taking up a roster spot at this stage because he doesn't hit lefties, which is kind of his only role that you would have for him.
He doesn't hit lefties.
You clearly don't trust him to play second or third, which probably a good idea.
So like there's not really a role here for him since they've acquired Nailer.
So therefore there's not a role for Locklear.
And even if you do want him to DH against lefties, that's his primary role.
Well, okay, that's what?
one start a week at most.
And this is a guy who
needs the regular reps.
And so you're kind of in this thing.
Like is there really much for him to prove a AAA?
No, he's clearly too good for that level right now.
But also,
what good is it to have a first base only
guy on your bench when you already got two other first base only guys on your
team? Like it just doesn't make sense.
And so yeah, because of all that,
I look at this and I go, this probably a one or two day thing
while they assess the deadline and they see what they come up with and they see how they can
recycle guys on their bench because in just like on a bench roll basis miles master
bony makes more sense samad taylor makes more sense leo rivas makes more sense like well now they
have one fewer guy who can play in the outfield yeah i mean dylan more is your fourth outfieler
now, which
is Dylan is Dillamore even going to be here tomorrow or Friday?
Right.
Shouldn't be.
Right.
So again,
it's just one of those things where it's like I struggle to see even like a couple
week stint.
I struggle to see how that's valuable to Seattle.
And I certainly struggle to see how,
you know,
a two month stint is valuable to Seattle because I don't know how you guys,
how you get this guy enough at bats without taking that bats away from
better bets.
Yeah.
Well, the other thing, too, is like,
Locklear is a reverse splits guy.
He has been significantly better
against right-handed pitching down in AAA
than he has been against left-handed pitching.
So if you want to use him according to his greatest strengths,
then you're knocking out left-handed Polanco out of the lineup
or you're knocking Cole Young out of the lineup against Ritey's
or you're knocking out of the lineup against Ritey's.
like I just don't really see how this works like what the ultimate benefit is not just to the mariners but also to Tyler Lockley or himself.
So yeah, I just like I slept on it like I thought it was weird when you know it got informally announced last night.
I slept on it and I still don't understand it.
the only way that like I feel like you can actually get him consistent at bats where like consistent ish
a bat's where it actually makes some sense is to give him some of the at bats that that
Polanco has been getting against lefties or Cole Young has been getting against lefties
and then you put Polo at second but again how many lefties first of all how many lefties are
you're just going to see in general.
And then two,
again,
that goes against what his strengths are.
Which again,
they haven't cared about
with regards to Donovan Solano.
They've just completely ignored that as far as Solano goes.
But yeah,
it's just,
it's a weird fit.
It's a really weird fit.
So I don't know.
We'll see maybe it's only a couple day thing.
But even that,
that's a little weird,
right?
Calling him up for a two day thing.
Why wouldn't it just be Taylor
or Matt?
Master Boney.
Because like Master Boney, you could call back up due to the injury.
And he's someone that you have been willing to play out in a corner outfield spot.
Yeah.
I mean, Samad Taylor has also been crushing it down in AAA and he's a right-handed hitter.
We could also play a little bit of a second base if we need him to.
And he can steal bags off the bench and stuff like that.
So yeah, it's just a really weird bit.
I don't think this is a showcase thing.
It's too close to the deadline to be a showcase thing.
I also wouldn't say that this.
this on the flip side, this doesn't guarantee he's not going to be traded.
They traded Brandon Garcia the day or two after his major league debut.
So I don't think this says anything about Locklear long term on this team or as a trade piece whatsoever.
So I wouldn't read anything trade-wise into this move one way or another.
But the move itself is weird.
It's just kind of a puzzle piece that doesn't really fit.
And I get the idea like, look, this guy's got nothing left to prove in AAA.
but it's like, okay, but he does have something to prove at major league baseball,
and the only way you can prove yourself, you know, at the big league level is to get playing time.
Yeah.
How do you get a first base only playing time when you have, you know, already an everyday first baseman
who you should not bench under really any circumstance other than a rest day?
So, yeah, I don't know that the whole thing is weird.
Yeah.
I'm interested to see him because he has made tangible.
differences or changes that have led pretty much directly to the results we're seen.
So it's not like he just got hot.
It's like, no, he made actual hand position adjustments and he's changed his swing a little
bit.
And that's unlocked all this power that we knew he had.
He just never really shown.
So I'm excited to see it.
I'm just like, how often am I going to get to see it at whose expense?
Yeah.
So it's just weird.
Like I don't think that there's any other way.
It's a weird choice.
again, if it's more, if it's for more than just a couple of days.
And maybe this makes sense, you know, at 4 o'clock tomorrow when we look at the bench and we're like,
oh, okay, well, Locklear.
But even then, it's like, what is, as a bat, as a bench only first baseman?
It just doesn't make a lot of sense.
So we'll see what their plan is.
Yeah, I'll reserve judgment for Friday, I guess, once we see what the sproster is ultimately going to look like.
Yeah, it's just weird.
It's really weird.
And even, yeah, even trying to like project, you know, a couple days out from now, I just, I have a hard time seeing how it all works.
But even in the short term, like having essentially two backup first basemen on the roster is dumb.
All right.
Well, we are going to switch gears here.
And we're going to make our final predictions for the merits before tomorrow's trade deadline.

So things are still not really happening on the trade market.
It's been a lot of rumors, a lot of articles.
a lot of articles being written, a lot of tweets being sent out, but not a lot of actual trades being made.
We have seen a Tyler Kinley to the Brewers trade and a Luis Garcia, the reliever, and Andrew Chaffin trade to the Angels, which is hilarious that the Angels are buying at 52 and 55.
But I'm here for it, by the way.
Like, yeah, absolutely.
Go make stupid trades.
I'm super down with that.
They are so dumb.
Anyway,
let's hand out our final predictions here before the deadline tomorrow.
Chloe,
what do you think the Mariners are going to do?
Well,
I don't think they're walking away with Gino in this deadline.
The reports have been consistent that Arizona wants major league ready pitching.
and the Mariners just do not have that to offer.
They don't.
And the only arm that would be considered somewhat close to the majors
that would have any kind of carrying impact might be Sanger,
who I don't think is going to get this done.
Maybe he does, but again,
the Mariners seem very reluctant to trade a top 100 prospect for a rental,
which we've talked a lot about and why they shouldn't be,
blah, blah, blah, but whatever.
So even then, like,
the Phillies have like Mick Abel and Andrew Painter that they might be willing to trade and
the brewers are apparently willing to trade Logan Henderson who's big league ready and better
than anything you have to offer. So I think to get to the point where trading Gino to the
Mariners makes sense for Arizona, you have to just like blow them over with like talent. And to me
that means Ryan Sloan. I'm not trading Ryan Sloan for two months of Gino as
much as I love the guy. I'm just not doing that. And I really doubt the Mariners are too.
So I think they're still like in the discussion, but I think ultimately they just don't have
the right ammunition to go get Gino and have it make sense. So I think they're, I don't think
they're out on Gino. I would just be surprised at this point. They got them. As for what they do
get, I think they're going to land one of the Minnesota relievers.
Okay. Now, I don't know for sure if that's going to be Duran or Jacks or if it's even a step below that and they get Brock Stewart or Danny Coulomb.
Columbia, Cologne, whatever. Yeah, I'm not sure. Maybe they get one of those guys because they cost a little bit less and all that.
But I do think they're going to get a good bullpen arm from Minnesota and any of those four guys qualifies as a good bullpen arm, undoubtedly.
And then I, my hunch is that they also land Willie Castro in that deal.
I know that the odds are exceedingly low, blah, blah, blah.
But right now the focus for most teams looking for bats is on Gino.
And Castro is a rental.
He is a 115 WRC plus guy.
He's not a 140 WRC plus guy.
And so, yeah, I think there's a package that comes together there for Minnesota.
I think, you know, to be more specific, I think Teddy McGraw is involved in that package,
not because he was scratched from an autograph signing.
other day, but, uh, because he just, to me, he seems like a Minnesota twin. He just,
I don't know why, but he seems like a twin. Um, and obviously there'll be more pieces involved in that
Locklear makes sense, uh, for Minnesota as well. So, uh, I, I think there's a package there of
the Mariners, you know, good, but not great prospects that can land you, uh, like, I don't know,
uh, well, it wouldn't land you jacks or, or Duran. You're giving up a top 100 guy, at least one,
probably two to get one of those guys.
But for the lesser but still good relievers out of that pen,
I think it's,
it's a couple top 15 guys.
And for Willie Castro as well,
I think it's like another top 15-ish type of guy.
A bunch of Brandon Garcia's,
more or less.
So I think that's going to happen.
And then I think Seattle might have one more reliever move in them.
I don't know how high quality it's going to be.
I feel like they're either getting Duran,
or jacks right or they're going to get two good like just really good like seventh inning guys
just try to lengthen the bullpen like that would be something like brock stewart and like phil mayton
from the cardinals uh so i i feel like they're going one of those two ways i think the big splash here
is going to be in the bullpen i think they will add an auxiliary bat a a role player type of bat
uh to this lineup hopefully one that can play at the infield but i at the end of the day i like if we're just
being bold here, I would say
they're going to get
I'll say
I'll say
Brock Stewart,
Willie Castro
and like a Phil Maeton.
Okay.
Solid.
I'd be happy with that.
Yeah, it would fall well short of Jerry's.
We're all in.
But again, he
set that, he set the bar up here.
So it's his fault if he doesn't clear it because
we all had the bar set like right here.
And if he has the deadline I just described,
you probably would have cleared that bar by a little bit.
You'd be here.
This doesn't work very well if you're not watching on YouTube,
but it makes sense.
Like Jerry's the one who set the bar way up here.
And that deadline,
I think would be a failure to reach that bar.
But that's on him.
That's his fault.
So,
um,
yeah,
in,
in general,
like that would be a really solid deadline.
But,
uh,
it would be viewed as a failure because he set himself up to fail.
Uh,
but yeah,
I think that's where they're going with this.
That'd be my guess.
So I think Ben Williamson's going to be your third baseman on Friday.
I don't think they're going to get Suarez.
I don't think they're going to get Castro.
I think Suarez is going to Chicago, and I think Castro is going to go to Houston.
That's my prediction on those two guys.
I do think they will get a legitimate high leverage reliever.
Who is that?
I don't know.
I have no clue.
Could be Duran.
could be Jax, could be Bednar,
could be Helsley, could be Jake Bird,
could be Seth Halverson.
There's a bunch of names.
There's a bunch of possibilities
that it could legitimately be.
I don't know if they are
going to be willing to pay
what it's going to take to get Jacks or Duran.
I'm not sure.
Two top 100 prospects for any reliever is steep.
Well, and two top
100 prospects can mean anything, especially the mayor system, right?
Because they have back in the top 100 guys.
They have mid top 100 guys and they have top end of the top 100 guys.
Colt Emerson and Harry Ford are both top 100 guys.
Which one will the mayor absolutely not trade?
We know the answer to that.
So yeah, top one is very vague.
Like if they could get drawn from Michael O'Royle and Harry Ford, I think they would do that.
Sure.
Yeah, do it.
But if it's like Lazz and Harry Ford, I don't know if they would do that.
No, I don't think they would.
Yeah.
So I think they wind up pivoting.
I know that apparently they have been heavily scouting the Rockies,
but they've never made a trade with the Rockies.
And also the Rockies are weird,
but also the Rockies have made a couple of selling moves already.
They've sold Ryan McMahon.
They've just sold Tyler Kinley.
So, yeah, maybe they're actually down.
Maybe we're going to check off one of the three final teams
that Jerry has not traded with during his.
his tenure with the merrars.
Here's the other one.
Really?
He hasn't made a trade with the tigers?
Yeah.
Yeah.
So I saw Schusterman say that the other day.
I was like, wait.
Has he not traded with the tigers?
And then I looked at his,
uh,
yeah,
I looked at his trade chart,
you know,
his Jerry Depoto trade tracker.
Yeah.
No,
no Tigers trades on there.
That one's weird because like the angels,
they hate Jerry to Poto and they don't want to,
you know,
deal with him.
The Rockies are just stupid.
so it makes sense that they're not they've never made a trade the tigers is weird because they've been both good and bad and jerry's like tenure i guess it was just never lined up i guess i don't know that's that strange cool i don't want to circle back on the gno thing giving you my final thoughts on on him and that situation also wrap up my predictions and then colby's got some sleepers for you as well i will go over in just a moment but first a reminder this episode of the lockdown marries podcast is brought to you by five

And you're listening to the Lockdown Merritts podcast.
We are handing out our final predictions before the trade deadline tomorrow.
So to wrap up my thoughts here on the Gino situation,
I think it really is going to come down to just whoever is the craziest,
whoever is willing to actually pay that high price.
And I just, I don't think the mirrors are going to dare to be that crazy.
So I think the Cubs will.
I think the Brewers will.
The Tigers probably.
I just don't see the mirror is getting crazy.
Yeah, I don't know the Tigers have the pitching to spare.
I feel like this is going to be Brewers or Cubs.
Yeah, my guess.
Maybe Phillies.
Yeah, yeah, yep, yep, with Able as kind of a headliner, sure.
By the way, Hayman says that Phillies and Red Sox are among the many teams prominently
in on Duran.
Yankees, Mets, Mariners, and others are also involved.
Yeah.
I think if they are going to get one of the two big names from Minnesota, it's going to be Jacks.
That would be who I would prefer.
But it's interesting, I haven't heard them really linked to Jacks at all,
but I've heard them with Duran a lot.
But it seems like if you're interested in one,
you're probably interested in the other.
Yeah.
And those are very similar like trade costs too.
Yeah.
I think it really just comes down to preference.
If the twins are open to trading either one of them,
I think, you know, as far as just like,
like the cost is going to be relatively the same.
So it just comes down to like,
who do you want more if you're the team acquiring them?
Sure.
But yeah, on the Gino thing,
I just don't foresee them getting crazy.
So I do think Arizona will come down on the price a little bit.
I think they probably already have.
Because they have to.
Yeah.
Because whatever they get,
even if they come down on the price,
I think that's going to be more valuable than whatever they get from the qualifying
offer,
from slapping the qualifying offer on him.
Yeah.
So,
yeah.
So I don't think they should just hang on to them.
I think that would be stupid.
And Mike Hazen is not stupid.
Mike Hazen is one of the better GMs of baseball.
So pretty good.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So yeah.
I think they'll also get a supplementary bat just to continue my, my predictions here.
Kind of leaning towards them taking Miguel and Duhar on the flight to Seattle with them from Sacramento.
I hope is bringing his good friend Jeffrey Springs with him.
Yeah.
Because I've watched my last Logan Evans or Emerson Hancock start, right?
We're just going to pretend that the Mariners have the answer to their number five spot in the organization right now.
How stupid do you think we are, Jerry?
It's been rough.
How many more starts with the number five have?
Do we know?
Hopefully zero.
General, just the number five spot.
Well, there's 54 days, right?
Or 54 games left.
So in theory, 10.
Fifty four, you say.
Yeah.
in theory 10
but I'm sure there's some days
where you could skip it so I would guess
six or seven
but the problem with that
is that you have Logan Gilbert
who is working through an injury
you have George Kirby who's working through something
right now so you probably don't want to
you know if you can give them an extra day's rest
you probably want to do that
yeah so I just
I don't see them landing a starting
pitcher I don't either in that
annoys me and I'm only using that word because we're on locked on. So yeah, like Logan Evans
like the dude, uh, you know, I think he might be a solid starter, you know, in the near future.
He's not right now. He's not. Neither is Emerson Hancock. That ship has long sailed. You need a number
five starter. Yeah. I think what they're going to say is like, look, we only have a handful of
starts left with the spot.
We know that Emerson and
we know that Emerson and Logan
have both been able to battle
and they have been able to put together
some solid starts for us.
We're just going to bank on them doing that
at least, you know,
half of the next 10 starts.
Yeah, here's the problem with that.
Your bullpen,
being a super bullpen,
doesn't matter if you're down six to nothing
before they get in the game.
so so another kind of interesting thing here is like you mentioned like a supplementary relief arm
maybe they get a guy that they kind of piggyback with evans or hancock maybe it is a guy that
has got multiple innings like anthony desiccophani talked about him last week yeah yeah that'd be good
let me ask you this tie would you trade harry for pete fairbanks and sack let'sel
Yes.
Yeah.
And a heartbeat.
I mean, you'd probably do it for a fair bank straight up, right?
Yes.
Yeah.
So, um, I know the comments are going to love that one.
Yeah.
Um, so anyways, just to wrap it up, I've got a couple of sleepers now.
Some we've talked about in the past.
Some we haven't.
These are guys I'm keeping an eye on for the next, uh, 24 hours, ish, as you guys are
listening to this.
one we'll go Phil Maeton even though I've talked about them a little bit here over the last few weeks I don't think people understand how good Phil Maton's been this year
so yeah a lot of talk about Hellsley cool look at Mayton while you're at it a lot of talk about Jacks cool look at
Stuart while you're at it like there are other bullpen pieces aside from these big names that you can go get and improve your bullpen
so pretty much any of those relievers like if you see a reliever and you're like wow that's the guy
want like go look at his teammates see if there's some other guys in that pen that maybe makes
some sense um i'll say this brennan donovan sounds like he's actually available now it's
going to cost a lot yes uh now it's going to cost a lot clearly yeah but if he's available
that's a really good piece that has multiple years of club control and it is the type of guy that
Jerry would probably, I have to say probably, I can't say definitely about Jerry to Potto
anymore, probably be willing to give up the associated cost to get because he's got two full
years after this year, three, maybe I don't remember off the top of my head. Yeah. And maybe you can get
Mayton in that deal, right? And so you can kind of do a two for one there. And you have the prospects to
get that done. So if they are going to trade multiple, you know, top 100 type of prospects, then I think
Brennan Donovan is the guy they would do that on.
Just keep an eye on Donovan.
My hunch is that he ultimately doesn't get traded.
But it sounds like for the first time,
they're like actually listening on Donovan.
So keep that of mind.
And then finally, this one is fairly recent.
The giants have just fallen off a cliff over the last month.
And they are apparently willing to listen,
at least on their relievers.
Yeah.
And immediately,
Doval is a guy that
that jumps out right away.
What about Ryan Walker?
Ryan Walker.
I'm just going to say this.
I would do terrible things for Randy Rodriguez.
Yeah, I know you're a U-Tran of him.
Ty, you trade Colt-Hemerson for Rodriguez.
See?
He's saying, yeah.
Yep.
The fact that it's not an immediate no is like,
Yeah, I talk myself into it.
I love Randy Rodriguez so much.
I know you do.
I know you.
Yeah.
Anyway, go ahead.
Ryan Walker.
Yes.
That's the guy I've liked since, you know, right before he broke out.
He's kind of a cross-body guy, high leverage, can get strikeouts, can also get ground balls.
He's going to be very expensive.
But if he's going to cost roughly as much as Duranda Jackson, you get him for four years instead of two,
I think that's a guy to talk to.
Now again, I don't think that we're going to see the
the Giants hard sell.
So they're probably not interested in trading anybody
better than Doval or Duol, whatever it is.
Yeah. By the way,
Fine Sand says things are moving on Yonan.
And he thinks that he could get moved today.
So, yeah.
So we'll see.
again, what would be annoying about that is like if they move him and then they're like,
okay, well, we don't need to move jacks now.
And it's like, so if you miss out on him, you might miss out on all the twins,
relievers.
So we'll see what the mayor is want to do.
They are interested.
I know that, but whether or not they're going to have the best offer, I kind of doubt it,
but we'll see.
But anyways, yeah, I just keep an eye on Ryan Walker.
Keep an eye on Brendan Donovan.
Apparently the guardians are trying to move Stephen Kwan.
So yeah, the mayor should be interested in that just on principle alone.
Yeah, yeah.
Now, would it seem like the Dodgers be willing to offer more?
Probably.
But again, Seattle absolutely should be interested in Stephen Kwan.
They haven't been linked to him at all.
But if the guardians are trying to move him, that is the language that was used,
they're trying to move Kwan.
It sounds like they're not desperate per se, but it sounds like they're willing to be serious about these talks.
They're not just looking to see what they can get.
You should be sending out a very strong firm offer on Stephen Kwan,
who would be an ideal fit in the leadoff spot, push JP all the way down to nine,
where he probably should be anyways, especially right now where he's really struggling,
and give yourself more high contact rates, more athleticism, improve your outfield defense.
Like, Kwan is the guy that you should be willing to give up quite a bit for.
It just, I haven't seen the Mariners link to them at all.
So we'll see if that's a direction they want to go or if they, you know, can get together,
cobble together a deal quick enough to get this done in 24 hours.
But yeah, Brennan Donovan, Ryan Walker.
And you know what?
I'll throw Jeffrey Springs in there too.
Why not?
Because, again, the mayor's really need it.
They really need a number five starter.
Whether they want to admit it or not, they need it.
maybe there's like a last minute maybe there's like a last minute like Andrew heaney deal or something
yeah yeah yeah yeah so yeah I kind of feel like maybe this is the I've wanted the maris to make a
buzzer be a beat or beat or deal for so many years now maybe this is a year they finally do that
where it's like deadlines over there's a few deals trickling in you just like come on come on
I always I always hate the tweet from like Jude or divish that's like yeah
They don't have anything else.
I'm like, oh, it sucks.
I just, I need the dopamine hit of the buzzer-beater trade.
Well, I don't know.
I also just like the whole idea that we talked about,
kind of a lot for the last, what, year plus,
get too much.
Like, you think, oh, we're good.
We got everything we need.
Get something you don't need but helps.
Like, go.
You know who does that?
Teams who say they're all in.
I don't know.
Just saying, Jerry.
I'll believe it when I said.
Yeah, 100%.
All right.
