So last night, I put out a few polls on her Twitter account to gauge the temperature of the Marriss fan base on some free agency and trade topics.
So we're going to go over the results coming up here on the Locked-on Maras podcast.

So I wanted to try something new last night.
I put out a few pretty general polls on our Twitter account,
discovering some free agency and trade topics.
So we're going to go over the results of those here in a few.
And we also have some pretty bittersweet news to quickly talk about as well.
But before we do that, shout out to our title sponsor today.

So some news came out about 15 to 20 minutes before we hit record on this thing.
And again, it's pretty bittersweet.
A little bit expected.
There were some rumors about this going around a few months ago.
And it seems like it's finally come to a head.
So as being reported by John Heyman, Mariner's longtime play-by-play announcer, Dave Sims,
is heading to New York to drive.
join the Yankees broadcast team,
specifically on the radio side of things,
replacing John Sterling as their radio play-by-play guy on WF-A-N.
So obviously,
Simsy was a pretty polarizing figure for Mariners fans,
but he's been here for very long time.
It's called some of the biggest moments of Mariners history.
And Colby, you and I,
we have unapologetically been big Dave Sims guys on this show,
big Dave Sims supporters,
defenders,
et cetera,
whatever you want to call us,
right?
So,
yeah,
I'm sad.
I'm going to be sad
over the course
of the season,
not hearing Simsy,
you know,
on the occasional broadcast.
I mean,
it's going to be great
having even more
Aaron Goldsmith.
I assume that's what this means.
And also,
hey,
maybe it means we'll finally
get Gary Hill
on the TV side of things
as well from time to time.
But yeah,
for now,
I just want to focus on Sims
and,
you know,
give my thanks.
I don't know if he's going to watch this or hear about this or what have you.
But, you know, I think Dave Sims for, you know, his service over the last, God, how long has it been?
17 years since he made his way over and, you know, eventually fully took over for Dave Nehouse after Dave's unfortunate passing.
It's been a hell of a ride.
And so, yeah, how are you feeling here in this news?
Pretty sad.
You know, it's one of those things like you're happy for Dave because this is a, you know, a dream opportunity for him and all that.
And he's an East Coast guy.
You know, he spends his winters over there.
Like he's from the East Coast.
He's from, you know, Philadelphia.
So like, it's a bit of a homecoming for him.
So on that hand, you know, on that end, you're really happy for the guy.
Selfishly, you know, I'm going to miss him because for all of his, you know, idiosyncrasies with the, you know, this ball's got a chance.
and it's it's caught 50 feet short of the warning track and how he'd sometimes, you know,
tongue tie himself trying to come up with like a clever, you know, phrase or call or what have you and,
and all of that stuff.
We all know the do some delivery from the truck to the airport.
Right.
Right.
You know, and like his incessant love of the bunt with nuts and all that.
Thinking J.P. is a great base or base dealer when he's not at all.
Like all those.
He finally admitted that he's not, though.
He did.
He did.
But despite all that, like, like it or not, Dave is behind the mic for some of the Mariners franchise's most iconic, like, moments ever.
And he delivers in those moments.
He's got a big fastball.
And, yeah, you know, it's sometimes it's not as smooth as people want.
And I think a lot of that is comparing him to need house, who was just like a literal Hall of Favor at calling baseball games.
And Sims, you know, he was, it was more of a person.
touch. It was more of a kind of a, just, you know, average person calling the game, so to speak.
And yeah, there were mistakes. And yeah, there were, you know, funny moments as a result.
But man, when you needed a call, when the moment called for like a call, Dave would usually hit a home run.
So he's got an 80 grade festival.
Yeah, he definitely does. And so, you know, you think of Felix's perfect game.
You think of, you know, the walk or the drought ender, right? You think of the Hanneger
walkoff and so many other moments that that just you know encapsulate i mean he was case closed
the d a and and you know he came up with all those fun little uh you know sayings for for the closer
and and all that stuff uh closing time bartender and all that stuff so it was uh it was fun
it was fun listening to a dave game because you never knew what you were going to get and
sometimes yeah i'd be a little bit uh you know annoying but it was always fun and when the moment called
for it and when he needed to be at his best, he always was. So, you know, I thank Dave for his years
with the Mariners. And I wish him luck with the Yankees. And, you know, I hope when New York comes to
town, we get a chance to thank Dave up in the broadcast booth because, again, you know,
whether you like him or you don't like them, whatever, we know that there's a pretty big split here.
It's a good dude. It's a good dude who genuinely loves Colin
baseball games and that that always came out when he was broadcasting so uh you know kudos to him
and i wish him a lot of luck in new york and i'm going to miss him absolutely so thank you to
dave sems and congratulations to dave sims and uh hey now hey now hey now hey now all right let's
get into that's right let's get into off-season polls here in just a moment but first a reminder
this episode of the locked on marries podcast is brought to you by

So once again, put out a few polls last night on Twitter.
I wanted to try something new to get you guys even more involved with the show.
So I wanted to try something out and I asked some pretty basic questions about the offseason about free agency and trades.
uh, yeah, yeah, whatever, shut up. Uh, so didn't even have the best options to pick from, but whatever.
Okay. Well, you know, I, no, I, I, I put in some trick options because I wanted to test people.
I wanted to test the fan base. I wanted to test the fan base here a little bit.
Specifically with the free agent one. Now specifically with the free agent one, that was there,
that was very much on purpose. It was very much on purpose. Uh, yeah. Well, what would you have done
differently there, Mr. Patnaud? Yeah, no, just get to it.
I'll be sure to
Oh, you'll be sure to let me know.
I'm sure you will.
All right.
So the first question that asked you guys,
if the mayor is land of Roki Sasaki,
what would you prefer they do with the rest of their rotation?
Trade Luis Castillo,
trade Logan Gilbert or George Kirby,
trade Bryce Miller or Brian Wu,
or just go with a six-man rotation.
So trading Luis Castillo ran away with this poll.
63% of the 416 voters
selected that option coming in at second place, a very distant second place,
24% of the vote went to the six-man rotation.
And then trade Bryce Miller or Brian Wu and trade Logan Gilbert or George Kirby was basically
neck and neck.
Miller and Wu came in at 7%.
Gilbert or Kirby came in at 6%.
So the joke is on all these people because the actual option is option E, you're not
getting Roki Sasaki.
So not going to happen.
I saw your trick on this one.
Nice try, Ty.
But yeah, I mean, like, given those options, like, if you're telling me it's not a six-man,
I would just keep a six-man rotation, you know, unless I can get something really, really
good for Castillo.
And if you're telling me they are going to trade one of those guys, then, yeah, my first
choice would be to trade Luis Castillo.
But it's just because he's all.
older and more expensive than the other four guys and your,
well, five guys in your rotation.
So that's it.
It's not because I'm out on Castillo or anything like that.
So yeah, I'm not surprised that that one,
one, you know, running away.
You know, it's pretty interesting the mix between trading Gilbert and Kirby versus
Wu and Miller, that that was, you know,
essentially roughly as popular as the other one.
Like there doesn't seem to be a huge preference in the fan base between trading one of
the, if you're not going to trade Cassidy,
I would I would have thought that you know trading Miller or Wu would be a much more popular idea than trading Kirby or Gilbert but that just doesn't seem to be the case.
So, you know, it could be a case of like just trade whichever one gets you the most.
You know, but yeah, I'm not surprised to see that Castillo won that one.
Even though, again, it's secret option E, which is you're not going to land Rokie Zasaki.
So this won't matter anyways.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
whatever.
All right.
So the second question here was,
say the Mariners are willing to spend a fair amount of money on one free agent this winter.
Which of these four would be your preference?
Christian Walker,
Glaver Torres,
Anthony Santanderer,
or Paul Goldschmidt.
And thankfully,
only 3% of you took the bait.
Because absolutely no to Paul Goldschmidt.
I could have put Juerkson profile on there.
I could have put a couple of other guys on there.
But no,
I went with Goldschmidt because I wanted to see.
I wanted to see.
I mean, yeah.
There was a site that came out yesterday that predicted Torres to the Mariners.
And I think MLBTR like half of their like two of them.
Yeah.
Two of the four.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's why I put Torres on there.
Sure.
That seems to be more not connecting than like actual like, you know, tangible evidence that the Mariners are even interested in him.
But sure.
Yeah.
Really was a two horse race as it should have been.
Yeah, so.
For options, yeah, it's a clear one and two.
Yeah, so Christian Walker comes away with a win here, 52% of the 559 voters.
We got a lot more voters on this one than the previous poll.
Santander comes in at second, 35%.
So a lot closer than the last poll.
Glabert Torres finishes third at 10%.
And then, again, thankfully, only 3% of you voted for Paul Goldsmith because, yeah, no,
I'm good. Is that your preference as well, Walker?
Probably, although I
apparently am higher than anybody
I've heard or read on
Luke Rayleigh just being the first baseman.
Luke Rayleigh was really, really good
all year, but
amazing in the final two months. And people
are just like, you know, you have to sign Justin
Turner. You don't have a first basement. It's like
he's on there. He's right there.
Like Luke Rayley's right there.
But yeah, Walker is a guy who is,
insane pull power.
I'm not too concerned about the bat playing at Team Mobile Park.
I should say the power playing at Team Mobile Park.
The bat is always a concern, but like Mitch Garber's power came fine.
Like it wasn't a power issue for Garber.
It was contact.
And so, yeah, Walker is a little concerning that he's 34, but great, great season.
He's coming off of a great season.
He's still a plus glove at first base, which, you know, isn't super valuable.
it is something. It is, you know, a way to extract value if the bat does take a step back or something.
So, yeah, I mean, I think Walker out of those options would probably be my preference.
Santander is is right behind him. Like, I could go either way on this one, you know, so
Santander pretty much would it, I mean, almost exclusively be the DH for you. That's where he would
basically play. And then occasionally left field or right field, you know, Randy. And so like,
he can still play enough in the outfit.
field that you can rotate guys through the DH, give guys half days off and stuff like that.
But yeah, Santander is an interesting bat.
So yeah, the fact that he was, you know, a close second on this in this poll didn't really
surprise me.
I think I would go with Tony Taters here, actually.
I mean, pairing him with Julio and Randy and Cal in the middle of that lineup.
That'd be a lot of fun.
And be a lot of fun.
Also switchy.
So that helps.
Exactly.
With some lineup balance and whatnot.
So, yeah.
Like I'm totally fine.
You know, I think if you're looking at like, I think of the shorter the deal, the more I prefer Christian Walker, which is usually, you know, backwards.
Right.
That's the other thing.
Like who gets a longer term deal here?
Right.
If it's five years, I'd rather have Santander.
If it's two years, I'd rather have Walker.
So.
Yeah.
Walker is what?
Three years older?
Yeah, he's 34.
I think he's going, I think he's going to be entering his age 34 season.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, so he's, he's like three and a half years older than Sontander.
Yeah.
So Sontander probably gets a longer term contract than Walker.
But, but yeah, just in a vacuum, I would rather have Sontander than Walker.
Sure, but, you know, it works the same with both of them in that, like, yeah, they, like, signing either one of them doesn't relegate Luke Raleigh to a pure bench role because if you sign Walker, Rayleigh just kind of becomes your, you know, your fourth outfielder and he can play all three outfield spots.
and you can play first and you can DH.
So you still get him plenty of at bats.
You signed Santander.
You know,
Rayleigh's probably going to get most of his at bats as your primary first baseman.
So,
you know,
they work very similar in terms of like what it does to the rest of the lineup.
You just really,
really really just moves from primary outfield to primary first base,
depending on which guy he signed.
All right.
So we have two more polls to go over here in just a moment.
But first a reminder of this episode of the Locktime Airs podcast is brought to you by

We are going over some results here from a few polls that I put up on our Twitter account last night.
Let's get into this one.
Which speculative Mariners trade target do you want the most?
The options were Alec, Alec, Boeh, Brandon Lau, Yondi Diaz, and Josh Naylor.
and Josh Naylor
slightly eeked this one out
this was by far the closest poll that we had
34% for Naylor
31% for Bohm
and then 18% for Yadi Diaz
and 17% for Lao
I'm a little surprised that Yadi Diaz
only got 18%.
I think people are underrating
Yaddi Diaz a little bit
sure I mean
Nailer had a pretty good post season
so I think you know
and obviously he played pretty deep into the post season
so I think that's fresh in a lot of people's minds
Yeah, Nailer would probably be last of these four guys on my list,
just because he plays the position that, again,
I think the Mariners are most likely to cover,
and I would rather take a shot on a bat like Diaz than Nader.
Nailer is going to hit for more power.
Diaz is more contact and doubles and that type of thing.
But yeah, I'd rather have BOM, even though there's legitimate concerns about him.
I understand that, but third base is such a pit.
You know, that you kind of need to take a shot on somebody.
And if you're going to take a shot on anybody at third base,
the 27-year-old who just put up a three-and-a-half-win season and hit 40 dubs and, you know,
had 15 to 20 home runs and vastly improved his defense.
Like, that seems like the guy that I would go out and get because, like, if I don't get Bome,
it's like, am I rolling with Josh Rojas at third base again?
Gross.
If I don't get Nailer, what am I rolling out at first base?
Luke Grayley.
Yeah, fine.
Fine.
So it could be Luke Rayleigh.
It could be Justin Turner.
It could be Yanni Diaz.
It could be.
There's just a lot more option.
It could be.
Yeah.
There's a billion options on first base this year.
So I probably actually would have gone.
Boom,
wow.
Diaz Naylor.
It would have been my order.
Now again,
the Diaz-Naler thing,
it's close.
Like if the marriage prefer Nailor because he's younger and, you know,
the power profile and all that stuff.
Like, fine.
Yeah.
that's that's that's reasonable um so yeah i think the two first basemen are pretty interchangeable but
uh the fact that they're interchangeable and one of them won and one of them got you know last place
is is a bit of a surprise so i i think you know boom to me was is the easy just easy selection here
um and then i would actually say brandon low is actually pretty easy second and it's mostly just
due to position scarcity yeah i wonder how much of that for people is like the the injury concerns
you know, the likelihood that you'll have to platoon him with someone like we did in our offseason plan.
I mean, somebody who's already on your roster, though.
It's not like you have to go out and get another player to make Brandon Lau fit.
But yeah, I also think if it's just not like who's the most like, like who's the sexiest name.
because Naylor and Bone
they're kind of new to the
to the trade party
you know and we've talked about
Lao forever especially but
we talked about Diaz for
you know I think we talked a little bit about them last winter
and then obviously we talked about them this summer
so I think maybe there's just some fatigue
with the names that we've heard a lot of
over the last year or so
I wonder that may be factored in as well
but yeah I'm a little surprised
that Bome didn't come in at number one
because really the results of the next poll, the final poll,
which area of need for the mayor is do you believe is most important to fill?
And that was third base for people.
The other options were second base, first base, slash DH and bullpen.
52% of you voted for third base, 28% voted second base,
16% voted first base slash DH.
4% voted bullpen.
Now, okay, I get the prompt is most important position or area of need to fill.
but only 4% for bullpen
Like those are my people right there
Yeah right
Yeah I think that should have been
A little bit higher
I get what the prompt is
And obviously third base is more important
The bullpen whatever but yeah
I think I think most is the key word here
Yeah
Because yeah like if you're telling me like
Hey we can either go
Get like an everyday third basement
Or we can go get like
Two mid leverage arms
like yeah, I'll take the everyday third base, but no question.
So I think when you're just kind of triaging and you're and you're just kind of trying to,
okay, what's the most important?
What do I, what's like the place I need to upgrade the most at?
I mean, it's reasonable that third base would win that.
But I do hope that people, you know, are ready to acknowledge, I guess, that the bullpen
is a need.
It is not something you can ignore.
It's not the starting rotation where it's like, yeah, we don't get to Sassaki, whatever.
Like, I mean, it sucks because we.
He wants Sasaki, but we don't.
It's not like, oh, I guess we better move on to plan B.
No, your rotation's set.
Your outfield, pretty much set.
So, you know, it is, these are the four correct, like, positions to, you know, put out there.
And I think when you say most important, you know, I think it's not surprising that an everyday player essentially dominated this poll.
it'd be interesting to me like if we did a poll that was like on a scale of like one to 10 how important do you think it is that the Mariners yeah you know upgrade somewhat significantly like I don't know what verbi do you want to use but I think it'd be interesting because I think the bullpen would probably be like six to eight like in that range I would hope and I think third base would be like eight eight or nine would be my guess so yeah I think I think I think I
think it's just the the phrasing of the question very particular most important yeah it's probably
third base but that doesn't mean that the bullpen isn't important um i would say the bullpen is a
bigger need than first base for example um so yeah i think you know if you're asking me what's most
important i would say two non first base infielders and then the bullpen is is the third thing and
and i think the bullpen is you know i don't think the bullpen is one of those things where it's like
hey, if they do add somebody, great.
If they don't, they'll figure it out.
No, no, they should be looking to add people to the bullpen.
Right, right.
Good people to the bullpen, not flyers.
They could do that too, but they should add some floor to the bullpen as well.
So I think, again, continue to say it.
That's going to be my harping point.
Help out the bullpen.
Focus on the bullpen.
Spend resources in your bullpen.
So that's the drum I will bang all the wind.
enter and you know that that's and I'm right there with you on that right like if we did what
you were saying and we had like a sliding scale or whatever uh or you know a one through 10 scale
I would probably put it at an eight for the bullpen yeah so I think most people would probably
put it out of five or a six though that's what I would expect as well yeah just trying to gauge
what I've seen you know in our little pocket of the fan base that we get on you know social media
but yeah all right so colby has a prompt for you guys as well that we want to hear from you we want to hear your answers on in the comments below maybe we'll feature a couple of them on a future episode as well and go over the the responses to that so colby what is it it's a five it's a looking five years into the future right option behind door one option a whatever you want to call it i guarantee you that the mariners make
one World Series in the next five years.
You don't know when it's going to happen,
but it will happen in the next five years,
but they get swept.
They will lose the World Series,
but they will get to one.
But the other four years,
they miss the playoffs,
right?
That's the next five years.
Do you want that option?
Or you can just play out the next five years
and see what happens.
No guarantees,
no nothing.
They could get last place.
They could win the World Series.
Right?
Like, there's no guarantees,
nothing.
Are you taking the one World Series appearance,
one playoff appearance?
like in hand or are you just letting this play out and you'll take your chances that the
mariner's can do better than that over the next five years i'm letting it play out because yeah because
i want to pin it yeah cool great but overall i'm still in the same place that i'm that i am now i'm missing
the playoffs more often than not and i still don't have a chip there are people who will take the guarantee
just because like oh we're the mariners if we don't take it then you know we'll never happen blah blah blah blah
blah blah. Do those people I ask, why do you even watch sports? Like, I don't get like you watch sports because you know what's going to happen. Like I don't really understand the logic behind somebody who would take door A. But if you would take, you know, if you would take the first option, let us know why. Why not watch like take your shot? You know, could the Mariners make it to a World Series in five years? Yeah. Could they make it to two? I mean, yeah, sure. It's possible. Could they win one? Yeah. Like, why not? So yeah, take that chance.
that they could actually go and win and it's worth more than having one playoff run, right,
and going to the World Series and still losing that World Series.
So, yeah, I'd rather take the shot that they could, you know, maybe get there, you know, naturally
and maybe have three or four shots in making the playoffs instead of just the one.
And, you know, knowing that they're going to lose at the end.
I'd rather take the shot that they could actually win the World Series in the next five years
than, you know, be guaranteed one appearance and it'd be a loss.
So, yeah, I will let the fates decide what happens to the Mariners over the next five years.
Would you rather win that one pennant, knowing that you're not going to win a chip and then miss the playoffs the next four years?
Or at least guarantee you're going to get to the playoffs for three out of the next five years, but not make it to the World Series.
I'd probably take going to the World Series.
Over more consistent winning and contending.
Well, either way, like, you're telling me there's no shot I win the World Series.
Yeah, yeah.
So I would probably just take going to one over being eliminated in the ALDS three times.
Like, do I want to be the twins or do I want to be the Marlins?
Yeah.
Rather be the Marlins.
But setting through four seasons of not making the playoffs again, I mean, we've done it a lot.
We've done it a lot.
Don't get wrong.
Yeah, whatever.
But sitting through the one season where you go to the World Series has never happened.
So it's true, true.
I'll experience that just fine.
It's a good point. It's a good point.
So yeah, if the end result is the same, you're guaranteeing they lose the World Series,
then I'll take actually going to one over, you know, being eliminated, being the Blue Jays.
Like, ew.
No thanks.
Yeah, yeah.
I'd rather be the Diamondbacks than the Blue Jays.
Well, that's going to do it for our show.
