Marys lose to the Yankees today, three to two, despite having a two-nothing lead halfway through the game. They wrap up the homestand one and five and now head out on a long road trip after the off day tomorrow. A couple of pretty obvious turning points in this game. We go to the bottom of the fifth inning where Jorge Polanco singles with two outs and Julio drives.
Starting point is 00:01:05 a ball to deep left field that just barely dies on the warning track. Could have made it four nothing Mariners at the time. We had a really good Julio game today. Could have had a great Julio game if that ball went a couple extra feet, but it did not. And then immediately after that, the Yankees started to claw their way back into this game. Anthony Volpe with a double with two outs in the top of the six. And then Jason Dominguez follows that up with a double of his own to drive in. the only run that the Yankees were able to get off of Luis Castillo this afternoon.
Starting point is 00:01:39 And then in the bottom of the six, the Maris had another opportunity to play add-on, could not capitalize. That was kind of the story of the second half of this game. Cal Raleigh and Dillamore able to get on with one out. But Laoti Tavares strikes out swinging and then Ben Williamson flies out. Top of the seventh, Game Spire comes in for Castillo and immediately gives up a game-tying home run to Paul Goldschmidt.
Starting point is 00:02:05 who was pinch hitting for catcher J.C. Ascara. And then the very next inning, Aaron Judge hits the go-ahead and game-winning home run for the Yankees, giving them this game, giving them this series. And that is the story in this one. So, Colby, I want to start out by asking you about the decision to go to Spire specifically to start the 7th. Cassio was at what 90 pitches 93 pitches would you have brought Cassio back out there to face Scara and vivas or do you like the move going to Spire which allowed Aaron Boone to go to Paul Goldschmidt in that situation against the lefty well first I would reject the premise that
Starting point is 00:02:55 Paul Goldschmidt only came into the game because spire was the pitcher they were going to use goldsmith in this game of course they were he's you know sure an MVP candidate right now, if not for his own teammate being the best player in baseball, and I'm not sure it's remotely close at the moment. So, yeah, I don't think that really had anything to do with it. And then the question becomes, okay, do I want hired Luis Castillo, who, you know, the box score says he pitched really well. And for the most part, he did.
Starting point is 00:03:24 I'm not saying he pitched poorly, but he gave up a lot of hard contact in this one. And there was traffic all day. Do I want to do that or do I want to go to a fresh arm, one who just pitched really well the night before and do it that way. So I don't have a problem with them going to Spire over Castillo or anybody at the bullpen over Castillo at that point in the game. And then, yeah, like, I guess the only thing you could argue with is like, well, you could have kept Spire for the eighth when Aaron Judge was probably going to come up.
Starting point is 00:03:55 But again, then you have Spire against Judge and as good as Gabe Spire's been, that's a lefty versus the most dangerous right hitting bat in baseball. So you're kind of tough. And at that point of the game, too, you know, you know that you're at least going to have to face Grisham in that inning who's been killing you all series. And so you want the lefty there. And Rice is on deck who's a lefty as well. So in case somebody gets on, I get it. Like, to me, I don't really have a huge problem with the process there.
Starting point is 00:04:21 And at the end of the day, it's one of those cases where, you know, Gabe just has to execute better. You know, he threw a first pitch fastball right down the middle. And you put that ball in the corner or whatever. We might be having a different conversation. conversation. And, you know, it's unfortunate because after that one pitch, Gabe shoved. He shut down the Yankees and, and kind of like Vargas in the next inning, made the one mistake. And then, unfortunately, that's the only thing that we can think about right now, no matter how good the rest of the inning was. So I don't really have a big problem with that. You know, Gabe's been your best guy. It's a two-one game. You know,
Starting point is 00:04:57 you're definitely going to face Grisham in this inning. You think there's probably a decent chance you're going to face Rice and And I don't know if Judge had come up in the seventh, would you let Gabe face him? I don't know. And so obviously with Brash being down today, there's just not a ton of great levers to pull. The Mariners' bullpen has been mediocre all year. And they had to get used quite a bit last night because unfortunately the Mariners wasted a Brian Wu outing because their offense was absolutely pitiful for 11 innings. And so they had to cover even when the starter did their job and went more than six innings, the Mariners Bowl. Open still had to cover what, four and two thirds last night as a result.
Starting point is 00:05:36 And so that carries over to today. There is a snowball effect in baseball from one game to the next. We saw it today. So I don't really have a problem with the process behind it. I think it's understandable. It's just it's a bad result, but I don't think process is the blame there. Sure. Yeah, I mean, just Gabe has to execute better.
Starting point is 00:05:56 And what he's trying to do there against Goldschmidt is steal a strike. And we see Gabe do that often. And it's honestly kind of a support. that more hitters haven't taken advantage of that or haven't been able to take advantage of that in Gabe's career. But yeah, he's trying to steal a strike in that situation, just pipe a fastball down the middle, hope that, you know, Goldschmidt is taking all the way. He wasn't. And he demolished that baseball. So, yeah, you know, so it goes. Yeah, and then the home run to judge. It's so unfortunate because they had actually handled Judge really well between last night and
Starting point is 00:06:30 And most of this game today. But he hadn't done anything to truly damage the Mariners in the series. Yeah. Yeah. And I mean, like, Louise had a couple of great at bouts against him today. You know, Brash stuffed him in the locker and took his lunch money last night. But yeah, you know, he's the best sitter in the game. He's one of the best sitters of all time.
Starting point is 00:06:52 And he finally got you. It was the hardest hit home run at T-Mobile Park in the stat-cast era to win this game. So, you know. that's one of those situations where like it sucks but also it's just a great player kind of just like tip your cap moment like yeah good job yeah I mean like I guess the question is there why not do you walk him yeah do you walk him to start the end even though he's a lead off guy yeah um I'm not shocked they didn't I don't think there's a lot of managers in baseball who would uh but I think that's mostly because managers are largely not creative and and they tend to do things a lot
Starting point is 00:07:30 by the book and it's like oh you don't walk the lead off guy of an inning that'd be stupid well yeah yeah i don't know maybe we'd still be playing baseball if you did maybe not but yeah i don't know but the way that this offense was looking who knows maybe they're maybe they would just be delaying the inevitable i mean they basically did last night too until hopefully they got bailed out and you know vargas ends up losing the game tonight uh but he was he was awesome last night to be able to keep things at one-one like amina as well. So, you know, shout out to those guys. Yeah. You know, it's, it's pretty funny. We talked about, I think, on Monday.
Starting point is 00:08:09 We talked about how this bullpen, their biggest problem is that they didn't miss bats. They're not missing bats. They can't get out of these tight jams. And they had six strikeouts in three innings today. And they had, I think, eight strikeouts and four in a third yesterday, including, you know, a couple of big strikeouts with the runner on second, the automatic runner on second and extra inning. So it is kind of funny that the bullpen, you know, hey, they, don't strike anybody out. And then last seven innings, they've gotten, I think, 13 strikeouts that they, and yet they still surrendered the game today.
Starting point is 00:08:42 It just goes to show you when your offense performs like the Mariners' offense hat did on this homestand, your margin for error is zero. And it sucks because expecting anybody to be perfect, let alone a reliever, which is the most volatile position possibly in all of sports, you're asking for trouble. Yeah, so this offense has only scored more than three runs in one game over its last six games. Hopefully that changes going back on the road. We'll see.
Starting point is 00:09:10 But we'll talk more about Julio's Day, Luis Castillo's Day, in just a moment. Starting point is 00:10:11 following the Marr's three to two loss to the Yankees to finish off a one in five homestand. Not good, not good. But you know what actually was pretty good today, Julio's defense and his bat a little bit. Again, if that ball goes just a couple of extra feet, that he hit in the bottom of the fifth inning. We're probably having a different conversation about this game.
Starting point is 00:10:34 And we're talking about maybe one of Julio's best games ever because he kicks off this game by robbing Trent Grisham of a home run. A little bit of a get back after that one Grisham home run on Monday, bounced off of his glove. And then he drives in the only two runs for the Mariners today on a fastball on the outside part of the zone that he just punches down the right field line. really nice piece of heading there for Julio and then again almost left the ballpark in the
Starting point is 00:11:05 bottom of the fifth inning. Overall, what did you think about Julio's day and what do you think about just what you're seeing out of Julio right now? Yeah, it's kind of been a continuation of what we've seen over the last few weeks that Julio is just having really good at bats. He's cutting down the strikeout significantly. I know he struck out once today, but considering the Mariners struck out 15 times, I would say that was hard. hardly a problem that Julio could have corrected. Yeah, you know, he's sitting the ball hard right now. Again, it's still not perfect. They're still getting beat on fastballs on the inside corner quite a bit right now. But the fact that you look at the double yet today, right, it was it was a fastball,
Starting point is 00:11:48 two seamer on the outside corner. It was a good pitch. And Julio didn't try to do too much to it. We've seen Julio, you know, roll over on that pitch a ton in his career. And this time, we just shot a line drive down the line. Very similar to the game time double that he hit against the Astros about a month ago. Right. So Julio, you know, the overall numbers weren't incredible at this homestead, but I feel like there were a ton of really good at bat. A lot of good results that didn't necessarily count on the stat sheet, so to speak,
Starting point is 00:12:21 like the ball that he drove to left field, you know, next month, that's a home run. And it was a homer in five ballparks. He hit at 107, I believe, off the bat. Unfortunately, the ball just did not carry all that well today. You had to hit line drives to slice through that, and that's what Goldschman and Judge did. But, yeah, fly balls weren't really carrying that much today. And it's unfortunate, but I thought Julio looked really good. And Julio's in a good spot right now.
Starting point is 00:12:45 I know it's only like a 110 WRC plus right now. The slash line's not incredible. But I think Julio's in a really good space right now. And, you know, you get some help. then he gets some help, then he can be the centerpiece of this offense. And it's interesting because typically when Julio's in a good place, he's like the best hitter on the planet, right? And we see that.
Starting point is 00:13:11 And what we're seeing now is Julio has just been consistently good for about two and a half weeks. Like he hasn't been incredible. Like, oh, my God, he's an MVP candidate. But he's just been consistently good. And that's what we've talked about. Like when Julio's not the best player in baseball for a month long stretch at a time, can he at least be above average pretty consistently?
Starting point is 00:13:32 And that's what we're seeing right now. So I think Julio's in a really good spot. He's one of the only bright spots coming out of this series. Julio has made some really great defensive plays as well. And we're starting to see why Julio is potentially, you know, top, what, five most talented player in baseball. and we saw this series unfortunately again just not enough help and a little bit of you know poor luck on on the fly ball and today would have been like Julio's like statement game and we were that close to
Starting point is 00:14:04 getting it and unfortunately you know this was this was the homestand of Murphy's law everything that could go wrong in the series did and and you know it's it sucks that part of it is part of it is that's baseball part of it is that your teammates and and and your 26-man roster as a whole are not playing well enough right now. And they all kind of go hand in hand. So Julio. And a lot of that, again, is just because you're just so beat up. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:32 And, you've reap the benefits of like the next man up mentality, as we've talked about over the last few weeks. But, you know, that was only going to last so long. So, you know, we'll see if they're going to be able to survive this. But, yeah, you know, it's concerning, right? because again, you've lost so many key contributors. Right. And this is when we talked about the importance of stacking those wins.
Starting point is 00:14:58 Yeah. And keep on winning these games while you're hot and not letting games slip between, you know, slip out of your fingers, slip between your fingers because there is going to come a point where your depth is just, it's not majorly quality. You're going to have not majorly quality guys out there. And you're going to lose games like today that you would have won a couple weeks ago. And so you need to stack those wins so you have a bit of a buck.
Starting point is 00:15:19 offer and the Mariners just went one on the home stand and they're still going to be in first place no matter what. They're still in a good spot in terms of their playoff positioning and all that, which it's May 15th. So yeah. But yeah, like again, stacking those wins and riding and taking advantage of the Dillamore and Leo Rivas and J.P. Crawford and Horace Pallonka, those hot streaks that were incredible and taking advantage of them and winning those games was huge.
Starting point is 00:15:45 And you're seeing why right now because if they had just kind of survived that stretch, they've been real danger right now, but thankfully, because they stacked all those wins on top of each other, they're doing okay. And they do need to play better. And soon, they have a 10-game in 10-day road trip coming up here,
Starting point is 00:16:02 again, including what, seven of them against really good playoff caliber teams. So, yeah, they need to start playing better really quick. But again, thankfully, they'd stacked all those wins. And hopefully,
Starting point is 00:16:15 day off tomorrow, you get kind of a reset here, and you can go on the road, get away from Team Mobile Park until the end of the month and try and find some success offensively because really the first time this year where the merits have gotten really good pitching in back-to-back games, I mean, that I can remember. And again, they did this against the Yankees, the best offense in baseball. They gave up, what, four runs in the last 20 innings played.
Starting point is 00:16:43 That should be enough to beat the Yankees. And unfortunately, it wasn't this week just because the offense went ice. cold on the homestand. Yeah. But yeah, really nice last couple of days for Julio, especially defensively, you kind of mentioned it, but you know, on top of the home run robbery
Starting point is 00:17:01 today, he had that great grab on the ball and the gap off of judges bat to start the game yesterday. So despite having that one ball bounce off of his glove and over the wall on the Grisham home run on Monday, it was a really, really nice defensive series for Julio and just a really nice series overall for Julio.
Starting point is 00:17:18 Before we talk about Luis Castillo's day, I got to talk about this Miles Mastroboni thing a little bit here. I just, I don't get why Master Boney has earned so much favor from Dan Wilson and this in this coaching staff. Today, now obviously he wasn't initially slated to hit in the lead off spot. You know, it was supposed to be JP, but JP ends up getting scratched with, what did Dan say it was? shoulder. Shoulder. Soreness. Soreness.
Starting point is 00:17:50 Okay. Doesn't seem like that's going to be anything too, too serious. We'll see if he's in the lineup on Friday. But he'll get back to back days off between today and tomorrow. So hopefully that's enough rest for him. But, you know, again, Master Boni wasn't supposed to be the lead off guy, but he ends up getting thrown into the leadoff spot today. And I don't really understand that. I would rather just see Julio get bumped up into that spot and everyone else.
Starting point is 00:18:14 You know, Polo stays in his same spot at number two and then everyone. else just gets bumped up a spot. But Master Boney, like, masturbone has obviously had some, you know, some big moments this year. He's had some, some key contributions. He's had pretty good process at the plate overall. He's had some pretty good, you know,
Starting point is 00:18:32 plate appearances overall. But he's slashing 211, 282, 250 with a 61 WRC plus after this game. And he's earning more favor over like Leo Rivas. Now maybe Rivas has been dealing with something the last few days, because that's the only thing that makes him not playing justifiable. Seems unlikely since he just threw an inning. Yeah. Yeah, right.
Starting point is 00:18:55 So I just, it seems like they just genuinely think Master Boney is better than Leo Riehaws, which based on what? Yeah, again, like Master Boney has had some nice moments this year. Like he hasn't been a zero for you, despite the bad slash line, despite the bad WRC plus. But Revis has been.
Starting point is 00:19:14 Five starts in a week. Yeah, but Rivas has been better, just flat out better. So I don't get why Mastrobony hit lead off today, and I don't get why he's been playing so much more over, over, Leo Rivas.
Starting point is 00:19:29 Sure seems to just be a handedness thing. And we know that Dan is obsessed with handedness, unfortunately. But I feel like Rivas has put up his best at bets from the left side. So like, that doesn't make any sense. I don't know. I don't know. It's one of those things that, yeah there's not like a great choice to hit leadoff if jp's going to be out again i would have just
Starting point is 00:19:51 moved to julio up from three to one and then bumped everyone else up behind polo hollio's talked about not loving hitting lead off uh because he feels like he's got to run all the way in from center field and then he like once a minute to kind of like catch his breath and you could still do it once in a while i'm not saying that but i think if you're trying to keep hulio in a good space right now you want to move him down and then maybe but at that point even if that is the case, like, okay, Polanco's a better leadoff option, a Rosarina is a better leadoff option, Rivas is a better leadoff option. Julio's obviously a better lead off.
Starting point is 00:20:26 I mean, you'd rather have Cal Raleigh hit lead off. Tavares. I mean, I know he had a terrible game today, but like whatever, but like he wouldn't have been any worse than Miles Master Boney. Like, it just, Master Boney, I don't know, like off the top of my head, how many starts he had in this homestand. One of the six games, I seem to remember him starting. five four or five of them yeah and that is an absurd number of games to ask miles master
Starting point is 00:20:52 bony to start uh he's just not that guy master bony should be playing once or twice a week not five six times a week so yeah yeah i was trying to i was trying to think off the top of my head was if there was a game or two where dmo and williamson started and not master bony probably was but I can't remember. Anyway, but yeah, so I just, I, I find the, the favoritism towards, uh, or the preference rather of masturbating a bit weird from Dan Wilson and this coaching staff, but it's far from the only thing that this coaching staff and Dan Wilson specifically has done this season that makes no sense to me.
Starting point is 00:21:38 You're listening to the lockdown Marreras podcast following the Marr's three to two loss to the Yankees. Let's talk about Luis Castillo's day at Colby. It's been long enough. He was really good today. Well, he gave up a lot of hard contact today. So it was kind of a weird start.
Starting point is 00:21:55 But he goes six innings pitch. He only gives up the one run. He strikes out six. Again, like I mentioned earlier, like he had a couple of really, really good at bats against Aaron Judge. And when he got in trouble a couple of times,
Starting point is 00:22:09 he was able to dig in and get out of it and have some of his best matchups of the entire afternoon. So what did you make of his day? Yeah, kind of a weird day, like you said, 10 hard hit balls and six innings. That's not a great number. But giving up just one run to the Yankees
Starting point is 00:22:28 in any ballpark. Yeah. He is a great number. Yeah. I don't care of your pitching in Yellowstone. That's a great number. So, yeah, and I think the thing to see from this start is 17 whiffs. on 45 swings, 38%.
Starting point is 00:22:44 And he actually had two elite whiff pitches working today. 93 pitches, 58 strikes. It's a good ratio for him. 38% whiff on the four seamer. The four seamer is his bread and butter. And it has been his best pitch for quite a while. But this year it hadn't been. He wasn't getting swing and miss on it.
Starting point is 00:23:03 And that was concerning. But the day he did. And in fact, the four seam velo for the first time this year was kind of back to where was last year. He topped out at 97, 96.8 to be exact. But his average fastball was up seven tenths of a mile, nearly a full tick. The slider was up. Point nine miles per hour. The sinker was up. Point seven. So he was throwing all of his pitches harder today. Now, is that just because it was the Yankees and he was feeling good and all of that? Or is that because it's May, and this is about the time of year that Luis kind of starts to
Starting point is 00:23:37 feel like he's got his VLO back and all that? I will say he was. was pretty slider heavy early in this game. And then he kind of found the fastball. But I think the reason he found success with the fastball is because he showed the slider as heavily as he did in the first time through the lineup. He really attacked guys with the slider. And it was a good slider day. 32 sliders, 15 swings, seven whiffs, 47% whiff rate on the slider.
Starting point is 00:24:04 19 strikes on the 32 sliders. It was a really solid pitch for him. Again, it really let the fastball play up. Didn't see a ton of the two seamer today. Only 11 of them. Today was just kind of a classic Luis fastball, forcing fastball up, slider down and away or down and in. And then that was pretty much it.
Starting point is 00:24:26 And then he'd sprinkled in, you know, enough two seamers that you had to respect it. And then eight changeups, not really much going on with a change up today. Through eight of them, five strikes, only one whiff on it, just one ball put in play. change up not much of a factor in this one. But yeah, it was basically it was, it was forcing him, and it was slider.
Starting point is 00:24:48 And both of those pitches were really good. And I think the reason the fastball found some life today is that, A, the velocity was up. And that's why that helps, especially a guy like Castillo, that helps. But I think it's because he showed the slider early and often that the Yankees had to respect it. And with the pumped up below behind the slider, it made them just a hair late. a lot of times on that fastball and that generates a lot of whiffs. It also generates a lot of pop-ups that have high exit be lows but are
Starting point is 00:25:17 really no danger to you because they're there are fly balls. Yeah. And just not as many bad misses this time. You know, still some. Yeah, some, but that's the give and take of Luis Castillo, right? Sure, he's never had pinpoint command and control. Yeah, but when we've seen Luis at his very worst this year,
Starting point is 00:25:35 he's missing bad and he's missing often with a fastball. Right. And so didn't see that today. Yeah. So didn't see that today. And that made a huge difference. And again, the tick up and velocity might just be him finding his groove. I mean, this is usually what Luis Castillo does.
Starting point is 00:25:54 We've seen this now for a couple of years. Which, again, leads me to what I've, which leads me to what I've been saying that he is undoubtedly regressed. No one is arguing against that. but I do feel like some of what people have been saying about Luis to start this year is a bit of an overreaction. Yeah, absolutely. I just, I don't think the guy is cooked. I really, really don't. And a start like today, yes, he gave up a ton of hard contact, but I feel like, you know, a start like today proves exactly that, that he is still capable of doing this.
Starting point is 00:26:30 I just, I feel like the fan reaction to Luis, it reminds me of, of or it makes me feel like fans look at him like he's you know Felix in the last few years of Felix's career and that could not be further from the truth that is not who Luis Castile is right now he's obviously regressed but he is not unpitchable yeah uh right now after today's start he's running a 365 ERA and a 385 FIP is that elite is that number one no no is that number three, number four in a good rotation. Yeah. Yeah, it is. Yeah, he's he's the number five when everyone is healthy and cooking in this rotation at this point. But he's a really damn good number five when that's the case. And who knows if that's ever going to be the case this year. But yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:25 Right. And like, again, most teams number fives are not capable upholding the Yankees to one run in six innings. Yeah, they're not capable of going toe to toe with Terrick Scoobel. No. And giving their club a chance to win. Yeah. Yeah. I think the days where Castillo is just going to go out there and go seven and give up two or less every single time. I think those ended back in 2022, a little bit in 2023.
Starting point is 00:27:49 But the pitcher he has been for most of this year and what he was last year, that's a really good starter. And this is something we had to hammer home all winter as well when people just wanted to get rid of Luis Castillo. He sucks. Like, no, he doesn't. He's not the ace that you got in 22. and 23, but he's still pretty darn good. And he is definitely a valuable asset. And hey, imagine what this rotation would look like if you did trade him this winter and you didn't get an arm back.
Starting point is 00:28:18 Like if you wanted Tristan Kossis for Luis Castillo, you think Tristan Kossis would be helping this team nearly as much as Louise Castillo right now? No. Like you needed the innings. You needed this veteran. And Luis, again, I'm not telling you, he's been great this year. I'm not telling he's been amazing. He's not an all star. is he a good, strong number four starter who sometimes looks like a number two and sometimes has true number five outcomes?
Starting point is 00:28:44 Yes, he is. That's what he is right now. That is still an insanely valuable player to you. And you see it today why there's still value to a guy like Luisu, even when he got into trouble, was able to find a way out of it and he got the big strikeouts when he needed. And this is a guy who knows how to pitch. you know, and it's something that the Emerson Hancock's of the world can't do right now.
Starting point is 00:29:05 It's something that the Logan Evans of the world can't do right now. When they get into trouble, they can't adjust. They can't, you know, bounce back and they can't get that big pitch to get themselves out of it. Luis Castillo can. And that's what separates him from other guys who are true number five type of starters like Evans and Hancock is that when Luis gets into trouble, he can find a way to wiggle out of it. Sometimes he doesn't. Yeah. Like, and that's why he's not a number one anymore.
Starting point is 00:29:30 he's not an ace, but he still can. He's fully capable of doing it multiple times in a game. And that's what separates him from other teams number five. Like if you look around baseball right now, the number of teams who would love Luis Castillo to be in their rotation is still 25. Like there's very few teams that would look at Luis Castillo and be like, no, not interested. Like the dude's still pretty good.
Starting point is 00:29:55 He's more than capable of being the stabilizer, right? Which the mayor is neat in this rotation right now with all the injuries that they've suffered. And speaking of, Bryce Miller officially landed on the IL today with right elbow inflammation kind of sounds to me like it's maybe a little bit of a phantom IEL situation with the way that Justin Hollander was describing it and acting like it really wasn't anything serious. He said that the inflammation wasn't even like in the vicinity of his UCL or anything like that. So they expect him back by the end of his 15 days. We'll talk more about that on tomorrow's episode. But for now, that's going to do it for our show.
