Locked On Mariners - Daily Podcast On the Seattle Mariners - Randy Arozarena's Mariners Tenure Might Be Short-Lived?

Episode Date: August 29, 2024

Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times joined T.J. Mathewson and Lyle Goldstein of the Marine Layer Podcast and had some, let's say, not-so-encouraging thoughts on how the Mariners could approach the upcomi...ng offseason. That includes potentially trading Randy Arozarena a mere few months after acquiring him at the deadline and dealing one of the team's top starting pitchers for offensive help. Ty and Colby offer their takes on both of those possibilities, as well as Seattle's upcoming road trip to Anaheim. Thank you to T.J. and Lyle for their personal approval for us to use the clips included from their episode with Ryan Divish. Starting point is 00:00:00 So Ryan Diffish joined the Marine Layer podcast yesterday and had some not so encouraging thoughts on how the Marys could approach the upcoming off season. We'll discuss coming up here on the Lockdown Marrars podcast. Colby, hit it. You are Locked on Mariners. Your daily Seattle Mariners podcast. Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day. Ohoy, Sailors. And it's Thursday, August 29, 2024.
Starting point is 00:00:30 This is Tiding Azlis and Colby Patnaud for the Lockdown Marys podcast. part of the Locked-on podcast network, your team every day. On today's show, we're going to give you our thoughts on some of the stuff Ryan Divish had to say on the Marine Layer podcast yesterday. We'll also discuss this upcoming road trip for the mirrors. But before we do that, shout out to our title sponsor today. Game Time. Download the GameTime app, create an account, and use the promo code Locked-on MLB.
Starting point is 00:00:53 That's L-O-C-D-O-N-M-L-B for $20 off your first purchase. Terms apply. Download Game Time today. What time is it? game time and if you want to hear from me and colby even more and help support the show check out our patreon the link is in the description and you can sign up for a free seven day trial so ryan divish hopped on with our friends t j and lyle over at the marine layer podcast uh yesterday and we got about i don't know i lost count of how many people asked us to react to some of the things that
Starting point is 00:01:27 divish talked about on the podcast yesterday so we're going to be doing that today we're going to be react into two of the, and discussing two of the biggest roster related things that Divish and T.J. and Lau covered in that interview. But like we also announced yesterday, we're going to just have Divish on the show tomorrow. And we're going to ask him about some of these things ourselves as well. One of the things that he talked about was Randy or Rose Arena, saying that if John Stanton doesn't give the front office more money this offseason, Randy or Rosa Rana could be gone. In fact, he just said they'll trade Randy. And we don't really even know what direction they're going to go this offseason.
Starting point is 00:02:06 What if they say, well, we can't add it anymore. You've got to do payroll flexibility and create some stuff. I mean, if that's the case, they'll trade Randy this offseason and try and piece it together because he's going to make a lot of money next year. He'll make 12. So, I mean, do they exercise the option up to Wonka at 12. Mitch is going to make 16 next year. So it's like if they don't add money,
Starting point is 00:02:30 more money. If they say it to Jerry, look, we're not adding in my money. Where are you going to get a hitter at then? He can't add money. We'll ask him specifically tomorrow if that's actually based on anything he's heard or if that's just speculation because obviously Randy is set to make $11 to $12.000-ish million in arbitration this offseason. Unfortunately for the Seattle Mariners, that's a lot of money, a lot of money, quote unquote. But This also seems completely counterproductive to the whole point of what trading for Randy or Rosarena was. Like we talked about when they traded for him.
Starting point is 00:03:10 Like given how much of a disaster this offense has been Colby this year, you know, you're going to have to remake your your offense this winter as much as you possibly can. And look, you're not going to bring in just seven impact bats onto your roster, right? In one off season, it's just not going to happen. And so you need to do some of that work ahead of time, some of that work at the trade deadline. And that was what made Randy so crucial because he's a controllable bat beyond 2024, beyond 2025, even. So trading him after a couple of months. Now, look, I've heard that Randy has had a hard time adjusting to his new situation in Seattle.
Starting point is 00:03:54 I don't know if that's a Seattle specific thing or that's just about getting traded. general like i don't know if he would have gone through these same issues you know if he were traded to another team um whether it be on the east coast wherever right but to me that's just like what player doesn't struggle with adjusting when they get traded midseason right so i don't know how serious that is maybe we'll talk to divish about that a little bit as well i don't know if he has any insight on that but i just i don't know if maybe the mariners have gotten them in here for about a and they're like, you know what? Maybe it's not a fit.
Starting point is 00:04:31 And maybe that's what's leading to some of those discussions or what's leading to, you know, Divish saying this. I don't know. Colby, how do you feel? To me, it reads more along the lines of like, you know, if the Mariners front offices put in a position where they are not given, you know, for the fourth straight off season, they are not given the money that they are promised or they had been promised that they will trade Randy or Rosarena if it makes sense for them to do so.
Starting point is 00:04:59 I don't think this is a case where it's give us $20 million or we're trading Randy. I don't think it's either or. I think it just comes down to a position like if we feel like we need money that we don't have, then yeah, we have to be open to trading Randy or Roserana, even though we just acquired him. That's how I read into it. So, yeah, I don't think this is something where the Mariners are going to be actively shopping Randy or Roserina this winter because, again, it just doesn't make a ton of sense to go acquire guy and then, you know, trade him.
Starting point is 00:05:28 Like if you thought that was a possibility, you could have just gotten a rental and it wouldn't have been a thing. Like you had just got a rental bat instead of, you know, paying a little bit extra in theory for a guy who's got, you know, two and a half years of club control when you acquired him. And we know how much Jerry loves club control. So we'll see now the X factor here is who's the general manager because if it's not Jerry, if he's not calling the shots, then there's less attachment to Randi
Starting point is 00:05:53 or Rosenerina. Maybe they would. maybe the new guy would be more willing to trade, Randy. But yeah, to me that doesn't make a ton of sense. Again, you acquired a guy with two and a half years of club control. You had to have known what his RRB number was going to be next year, roughly. And even if ownership does the thing that they just do now, it's expected, where they tell the front office you have X amount.
Starting point is 00:06:18 And then on the eve of free agency, they say, actually, it's 20% less than that. If they do that, you can just, you have a, other levers to pull. You could just not pick up the option on Jorge Polanco, which is for $12 million. There you go. I'd rather have Randy or Rosarena than Jorge Polanco next year. And you have at least some internal options for how to fill that hole at second base. You could just go to Cole Young. And it's not ideal, obviously. You'd like a veteran there. But again, if it's Randy or Rosarena and Cole Young versus Jorge Polanco and Dominic Canzone,
Starting point is 00:06:54 like I know where I'm going. Like I know what my answer is going to be there. So there are plenty of other ways. You can shed that money. And you know, you can kind of think about it. Trading Randy or Rosarena for prospects probably doesn't make any sense because, you know, you're trying to win next year. You're trying to compete for a paddle next year.
Starting point is 00:07:14 So it doesn't make sense to do that. But if you're trading Randy or Roserina for a veteran, how much money are you actually clearing? The veterans probably making, you know, eight, nine, 10 million bucks. What are you repurposing this money into? Because we saw this pass-off season repurposing money. And that doesn't necessarily mean even if you're going to address multiple areas of need, instead of one area of need with that money, it doesn't necessarily equal a net positive,
Starting point is 00:07:42 as we have learned, unfortunately, over the last four and a half months. Sure. And what's your level of trust in the front office to be able to repurpose that money? properly. I mean, like, look, if you can trade, if you end up like trading Randy or Rosarena and you get like a Luke Rayleigh type, like somebody who has a major league track record, some who you like and is still making the league minimum and has more years of club control than the guy you give up, like, fine, whatever. Like, if you can trade Randy or Rosarena for Kyle Manzardo, like, okay, sure. Like, that's totally, you know, legitimate.
Starting point is 00:08:17 But if you can't do that, then what's even the point? Because again, you're trading, you're trading Rosarena for, you know, like it makes no sense for the mayors to go acquire Brody Hopkins and Aden Smith for Randy and Rosanerina. Like that equivalent makes no sense for the mirrors. Those type of players aren't going to help Seattle next year. So at that point you're looking at what? You're just going to dump them for salary like you did with Gino. You're just going to get whatever scraps you can for Gino and do that again?
Starting point is 00:08:44 No. Because again, if you're going to do that with a player, you can do that with Jorge Polanco. You absolutely can do that with Jorge Polanco. And you still maintain two years of club control. on Randy and Rosarena. So to me, unless there is a actual problem in the clubhouse
Starting point is 00:08:57 where Randy is like a bad dude with a bad attitude, unless that's the case. A bad dude with a bad dude. Sure, which I mean, is possible, but like, doesn't seem like Randy.
Starting point is 00:09:11 You've learned that in a matter of a month. Right. It doesn't seem likely that Randy at Rosarena who's like beloved and by pretty much everybody is just like this terrible guy who just immediately came into your clubhouse and just tanked it. Like that doesn't seem likely.
Starting point is 00:09:26 So to me, I read into that and I say, look, if the Mariners are put in a position where they have to cut some payroll or in order to make other moves, Randy or Rosarena is going to be tempting because, A, he's making $12 million, which I think is going to end up being the third highest payroll or third highest salary on this club, maybe fourth, kind of depending on what the actual number is in arbitration. Yeah, he makes some sense and you can actually get something for him. him unlike Polanco who you might not be able to get something for him. But that doesn't mean that like Jerry is told John Stanton like, hey, give me an extra $25 million this year. I'm trading Randy. Like no, it's just if they have to trade, if they have to move salary, a Rosarena has some of the, you know, has one of the highest salaries on the books.
Starting point is 00:10:11 And he's a guy who is probably going to get you the most aside from like, you know, the two guys who are making more ahead of him, Julio and Luis, Luis Castillo has no trade clause. so that makes things a little bit iffier. So I just think this means that, you know, if the Mariners feel like they need to move money around, they would be open to trading Randy or Rosarena. Like they're just not going to say no because we just acquired him. Like they have to keep that avenue open, unfortunately,
Starting point is 00:10:37 because with the financial constraints that they've been placed under for the last four winters, they've had to get creative with the money. And so that could mean trading a guy like Randy or Roserina. That's how I read into it. To me, it would just miss. the point if they did that it would be tone deaf and not tone deaf with regards to the fan base i mean it would be but it would also be tone deaf to just what your situation is right now you need good
Starting point is 00:11:03 hitters you need as many good hitters as possible rainy rose ran is a good hitter why would you subtract from the few good headers you actually have already in hand because that just creates more work for you and again what are you repurposing that money into right and maybe that leads into our next discussion about, you know, trading one of the pitchers for a bat, multiple bats, and then repurposing that money into, you know, from trading Randy into getting that replacement pitcher, right? Maybe it goes hand in hand with that, but either way, it's just I don't see any feasible way where you trade Randy or Rosarena this offseason and it leads to you ultimately getting better. I just don't see it.
Starting point is 00:11:50 I don't see it at all. So that would be frankly ridiculous if they trade a Randy this offseason. Sure, unless they get the godfather offer. Right. And I just, I don't see that happening. No, unlikely. All right. So let's talk about the pitching aspect of things here.
Starting point is 00:12:10 This is going to be something that we're going to run into the ground this off season. So this is far from the only time we're going to have this discussion over the next few months. but let's get into it a little bit here in just a moment. But first, a reminder, this episode of the Lockdown-Ares podcast is brought to you by Liquid Ivy and Game Time. Starting point is 00:13:30 So some of you may not know this, but I used to live in New Mexico. And down in New Mexico, there are zero pro sports teams. And a lot of the bands and artists that I listen to skip going there more often than not. So when I moved to Toronto where there's a baseball team, a basketball team, a hockey team, even a soccer team, and there's great music being played every night in the city. Yeah, I was right in my element. And when I want to catch a ballgame or my wife and I want to see a ban, I always get our tickets through Game Time. And that was the case well before GameTime sponsored our network and before I even join the network.
Starting point is 00:14:01 Because it is truly the best ticketing service, hands down. I really, really believe that. And now it's getting even better thanks to Game Time Picks. Game Time Picks filters out the fluff to show you only incredible deals on great seats so you don't have to waste time searching through thousands of tickets. Starting point is 00:14:53 Game time. And you're listening to the Lockdown Mariners podcast. You can catch all the action between the Mariners and the Angels tomorrow night on the Marra's hometown broadcast with SiriusXM via the SXM app. All you have to do to find that, search the word Mariners. Mayer's kicking off a long road trip. We're going to be talking about that a little later on in the show. But let's keep talking about what Ryan Dimmish talked about on the Marine Layer podcast yesterday.
Starting point is 00:15:20 Again, we're going to have Divish on the show tomorrow to ask them about some of these things. But Divish, TJ and Lyle talked about something that Colby, you and I have talked about a lot just privately amongst ourselves. And that's the idea of trading one of the Mariners' current starting pitchers to help them get better offensively. Now, we know that for all the reasons that we just talked about with the Randy of Rosarana thing, marries are going to have a lot of money to spend because John Stanton isn't going to afford that to them. I think that's pretty safe to assume, right? Front office, even if they do get some money to spend,
Starting point is 00:15:59 it's not going to be a lot. Right. I don't, not only do I think is that safe to assume. I think that is the only thing you can possibly assume about this ownership group is that they will not spend what they should. And just based on last three winters, not only will they do that, they will tell their front office they have this amount to spend,
Starting point is 00:16:18 And then a couple weeks later or a month later, they will say, actually, it's less than that. So you have to expect that at this point, which is sad and pathetic and use whatever, you know, descriptor you want there. But I think you have to literally expect that. And I think at most you're looking at this going like, oh, you know, they might raise their payroll $5 million over what they did last year because that's what they did last winter. And that's what they did the winter before. the winter of oh they added 50 million dollars to payroll in addition to what they were not they didn't cut money and then add money they just added 50 million dollars to what they spent last year it's never going to happen you just have to assume that and if it does great you know we'll be we'll be shocked we'll be surprised but you just have to assume it's never going to happen are they going to have to trade one of these pictures to get a hitter yes there's no other way to get an elite hitter to sign here either you grossly overpay which i think we know they aren't going to to do because they don't have any money supposedly, or you trade one of those five and then sign a pitcher and build your rotation that way. And so, and it's, you have to ask some hard questions. Is Logan
Starting point is 00:17:31 Gilbert going to resign with his team? Is he going to sign an extension? Because he's going to make, he's making four this year. That means he's going to make roughly eight to nine next year. And then 14 if he stays healthy he gets real expensive George will make four or five next year Cal's gonna make five next year at least probably six so like do they trade one or do you just trade
Starting point is 00:17:56 Castillo who's got a like a locked in contract you don't have the you don't have the ups and downs arbitration but at the same time like they're gonna these guys are going to throw more innings than any other rotation of baseball when it's all said and done if they still keep stale deep
Starting point is 00:18:11 I mean like make every start basically other than will. I mean like do you think that happens next year? So this was a bit more speculative on Divish's part, a lot more clearly speculative than maybe the Randy thing. And again, we'll ask him if that's based on anything, the Randy stuff at least. But everything that Divish said about this situation is right. It is factual, right?
Starting point is 00:18:40 Like it's very hard to get hitters, good hitters, free agent hitters to come to Seattle at market value. You are probably going to have to overpay for an elite hitter and they are most likely not going to do that given the payroll restrictions placed upon the front office. So the easiest path to go out and get legitimate impact like an elite hitter would be to trade one of your elite starting pitchers or at least, you know, one of your starting pitchers from your elite rotation, right? Like that is the easiest path that doesn't make it. Disagree. Okay. What is the easiest realistic path?
Starting point is 00:19:22 Here's what I disagree with. The realistic path to get an elite hitter. Yeah, it's probably the trade Kirby or Gilbert. You don't need an elite hitter. And that's where my disagreement comes in. You don't need an elite hitter. Would it be great to have one? Sure, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:19:37 It's the only way you can win in Seattle is to have a, an elite hitter in the middle of your lineup? Absolutely not. Absolutely not. You can win with pitching and defense and base running and good hitting. So I disagree with the premise of Divish saying like the only way you're going to like get the hitter you need is to trade from your pitching. I disagree with that. Well, I think I think that is factual.
Starting point is 00:19:59 Like if you're going to get an elite hitter. I disagree with the premise that you need to get in the only way to fix this is to get an elite hitter. The only way to win. I don't know if that was necessarily his premise on that, but, but nevertheless, right? I totally get what you're saying. I just think that Devis was saying like, if you are going to get that guy,
Starting point is 00:20:16 that's how you're going to have to do it. And I do agree that. Yeah, yeah. And I do agree, though, that if that's, if you're going to get one of those guys, that's how it's going to happen. Doesn't mean that that's what's going to happen, right? But that's how it will happen.
Starting point is 00:20:30 How many of these are there even out there? So to me, it's just a flat no on Kirby, Gilbert, Miller, and Wu. just I'm out for different reasons right for me but I but I but I think even now as you know Gilbert's starting to inch closer to free agency he's still going to have three years of club control after this season I don't think that you're going to get a proper return
Starting point is 00:20:56 for any of those guys I don't think you're going to get true one for one value for any of those guys and keep in mind you want similar club control you want similar salaries because you can't just trade one of those guys for a hitter making $35 million a year because now you're going to have to trade somebody else to accommodate that salary because John Sand is a cheap is a cheap skate like you're going to have to use you're going to have to do that so you have to find somebody making roughly the same salary with roughly the same amount of money or roughly the same amount of club control who is roughly the equivalent of Kirby or Gilbert like if you're talking about them so that's why for me I don't think you're going to get fair value for those guys because
Starting point is 00:21:38 I don't think, I don't know if that hitter exist. Right. For Miller and Wu, it's like you said, you're selling low. We haven't seen these guys' ceilings yet. And you need those guys because you know what you don't have in your system right now? You don't have a Bryce Miller or Bryant Wu knocking on the door. Yeah, we like Logan Evans. Yeah, we like Brayden Garcia, Brandon Garcia, but they are not in no way should you expect them to be Miller or Wu right away.
Starting point is 00:22:01 So you don't really have those replacements. And by the way, part of the problem with this whole thing is that, yeah, you trade the pitcher. you get the hitter and then okay cool but now you have to go sign the pitcher and it's not like you're going to get a good pitch a Logan Gilbert ask pitcher for 10 million dollars like you probably get them for market value but Logan Gilbert's market value if he was a free agent right now is yeah 25 30 million dollars so yeah so the the thing with that is can you get to a place where you're at least able to win more of the starts by the other four guys that are still in the rotation like can that outweigh the drop off from louise castillo logan gilbert etc to
Starting point is 00:22:42 brandon garcia logan evans because you're still going to win some of those starts right you're still going to win some of those starts by by whoever fills that that vacancy assuming the guy you bring in actually hits a t mobile park right apparently is a big issue but can you does this ultimately lead you to winning more of the george kirby starts of the brian woo starts of the bryce miller starts that you're not winning this year. Right. But can you also win more of those starts by simply going out and building an average offense that doesn't include sending one of those guys away for an elite bat?
Starting point is 00:23:15 And again, I'm dead serious right now. You guys tell me, who is the equivalent to George Kirby or Logan Gilbert with the same number of club control years? We're making roughly the same amount of money. Who's that guy? So to me, the only one that I'm open-minded to trading is Luis Castile. And that's only if the Mariners can accomplish both of these things that I'm about to lay out here. One, they're able to immediately address an offensive need of theirs, at least one of them in a meaningful way.
Starting point is 00:23:56 And two, get the other team to take on pretty much all of the contract, which also frees up money for me to go out and do other things. You start to look at this, though, like, who are the teams that are out there that, A, going to need starting pitching this winter. B, are going to be willing to add significant salary. I mean, Cassio is still a bargain, but he is making $20 plus million. How many teams this winter just didn't even add like $5 million in payroll, a lot of them, a lot of them. So you have to find that. You have to find the team that has the need, has the money to spend, has the capital you need to make this trade make sense for you. How many teams is that?
Starting point is 00:24:33 two or three and then oh by the way it has to be a team that louise castillo will say yes i will weigh my no trade clause to go there so i do think there is the there's a pretty clear path to checking off at least a few of those boxes like i i do think that the teams that louis would waive his no trade clause for i don't want to speak for the guy but this is just my assumption right the the teams that he would waive his no trade clause for are the same teams that are actually willing to spend money that are actually willing to take on 24 24ish million dollars a year for a guy that continues to post right has stayed healthy has performed at least a number three rate number two rate right uh pretty consistently yeah there's been some some dives and all that stuff
Starting point is 00:25:18 whatever but like overall cassio has been really good his four is a good number three yeah and he's 31 years old so it's not like he's 36 so like the you know the dodgers the met's the The Phillies. The Cardinals maybe. Yeah, teams like that that are going to contend next year that have shown them willingness to spend you know, and upwards of $180, $200 million plus in payroll.
Starting point is 00:25:47 I think those teams line up pretty well for Castillo to waive as no trade, also take on all that salary. Or at least most of the salary. Possibly San Diego. So now the other questions of that is do they actually have the pieces to make it worth it to the mirrors? Or do you get a third team involved?
Starting point is 00:26:04 Maybe that's, you know, another element that we can discuss here. Look, we're going to look at all these avenues over the course of the off season. There's a lot to go over here. I'm not just a hard no on that, right? I just don't know if there's an actual fit. All right. Let's talk about this upcoming road trip for the Mariners. You're going to be going over their upcoming series with the Angels because, again,
Starting point is 00:26:27 we're going to be interviewing Ryan DeVich tomorrow. That tomorrow show is going to be all about that. So let's preview this Angel series coming up here in just a moment. But first, a reminder of this episode of the Lockdown on Marys podcast is brought to you by Price Picks. Prize Picks is the easiest, a most exciting way to play daily fantasy sports. Unlike other apps on prize picks, it's just you against the numbers. All you do is pick more or less on two to six player stat projections and watch the winnings roll in. You can now win up to 100 times your money on prize picks with as little as four correct picks.
Starting point is 00:26:59 You can turn $10 into $1,000. Think Tyree Kill will get more than 90.5 yards in week one or that Caleb Williams will throw for fewer than 236 and a half yards in his debut. Cook up hot takes with your friends and win real money this football season when you and your crew run your game on price picks. Download the price picks app today and use the promo code locked on MLB for a first deposit match up to $100. That's promo code LOC, KD, ON, MLB on prize picks for a first deposit match up to $100.
Starting point is 00:27:27 prize picks run your game and you're listening to the locked on merrists podcast you can catch all the action between the merrers and the angels Friday night on the merrish hometown broadcast with serious xm via the sxm app all you have to do to find that search the word merrers so that's what we're talking about now here on the show uh mayor is going out on a long road trip they're going to start nanaheim uh tomorrow and then they're going to oakland for their last series ever at the the coliseum and then uh they're going to make their way to St. Louis, kind of a weird road trip, a west coast until it's not, essentially, road trip. So, last road trip, obviously went not great. It went one in eight. Manager got fired afterwards. So that's, yeah, yeah, probably the lowest point of the season and maybe the lowest point for the mayor is in general over the last how many years.
Starting point is 00:28:27 The Angels have had the marriage number. this year, unfortunately, Colby, which I know is a tough pill for you specifically to swallow. They've won six in a row against our beloved M's. But of course, the difference in this series, Colby, Scott's service is not here, and now the mariners have Dan Wilson. So that will change everything, surely. Three games sweep. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:52 It's already done. Right. Yeah. Obviously, you know, the Angels traded a couple pieces at the deadline so don't have to worry about Estevez in the back of their bullpen that was a nightmare every time he threw against you um so been joyce though yeah yeah uh obviously you know taylor ward good player uh Zach netto pretty good player uh Logan ohopi good player uh so yeah it's still a team that obviously mariners know very well you have to play well against otherwise
Starting point is 00:29:22 they're going to beat you um they have lost 15 of their last 18 uh they are are playing, they just finished today. They were in Detroit for a getaway day game, so they are traveling from Detroit back to L.A. No day off in between for them. So there are some positives, you know, going in your direction. But yeah, it's been a disaster against these guys all year.
Starting point is 00:29:42 And you just really haven't hit against them. Now, tomorrow you get Carson Fulmer, who, you know, pretty much shut you down the last time you faced him. And then you get Tyler Anderson, who, you got a couple two-run homers off of, you know, there's a possibility he implodes, but he's been one of their best
Starting point is 00:29:59 pitchers for, well, really all year, obviously. So, and then you have the, the rookie going on Sunday against Bryce Miller. So we'll see, again, in theory, pitching matchups do favor you. The Angels are 24 games below 500. They're 16 and a half games out of first place, 17 and a half games out of first, 16 and half out of first place. They've won just three of their last 18. And you should win this series pretty handily.
Starting point is 00:30:25 2024 Mariners say no. So, you know, you never know. I mean, this team just got mopped, not even swept, mopped four game sweep for those I don't know, by a very bad Blue Jays team. So obviously by now we know that there's no point in trying to prognosticate individual series for the Mariners. They're probably going to have the pitching advantage every night,
Starting point is 00:30:49 at least in the rotation, almost certainly. They're probably the better roster on paper. but we are 100 and, you know, 30 some odd games in, and the Mariners are basically exactly 500, and they've played fantastic baseball for like six weeks. They've played just soul-crushing baseball for six weeks, and they've been mediocre the other six weeks, like the Mariners are in every definition, a 500 club right now.
Starting point is 00:31:15 So what happens with 500 clubs? They lose to bad teams all the time. So you hope you can take advantage of it because, you know, Houston's playing Kansas City for the next four. So you'd like to win a couple of these games, maybe pick up another game or two on Houston this weekend. But with this lineup, impossible to say, like they,
Starting point is 00:31:35 you could tell me they are going to sweep the angels and I'd be like, okay, I mean, cool. Like I could see it. You tell me they get swept by the angels, I'd be like, yeah, that's pretty fitting considering, you know, how they played against them, how they played on the road recently. So we'll see.
Starting point is 00:31:51 Again, on paper, everything favors the Mariners to go. down to Anaheim this weekend and just win the series. Like I'm not even asking for a sweep. You should be able to win this series. Nothing that has happened on paper. You should have won the last two against them as well. Yeah. Nothing that should have happened on paper has happened for the Mariners for the last three,
Starting point is 00:32:13 four weeks. Like, hey, they're playing the Phillies. They're going to get run out of the building. Oh, they went two or three. Like, oh, they're playing the Mets. The Hotteseman baseball. They're going to get run out of the building. Oh, they sweep.
Starting point is 00:32:21 And then it's like, oh, they're playing Detroit. They should, they should handle these series. Oh, they go one in five. Like, it's just, you know, like, oh, they play San Francisco and it's, oh, they're down five, they're down four to, or five to one or whatever in the eighth inning. And this one's over. Nope. Oh, look at that. They actually win.
Starting point is 00:32:35 How about that? They not only do they win, they win, by, you know, stringing hits together, six in a row, all singles. Yep. And it's just like, huh. And then George Kirby's pitching. Like, oh, this is great. George Kirby can dominate this lineup. Nope.
Starting point is 00:32:47 George Kirby stinks today. And it just nothing on paper has mattered for the last couple of weeks. So the fact that the Mariners should. be favored here this weekend. Toss it out the window. It doesn't matter. You just hope that they play well. You hope that the offense shows up enough. And you hope that Kansas City helps you along the way. And maybe you can get out of this weekend.
Starting point is 00:33:06 Be great if you could pick up a couple games on Houston. But if you pick up one game on Houston this weekend, that's a really successful weekend. All right. Well, we'll see what happens. I'm just going along for the ride. That's going to do it for our show.
