Starting point is 00:00:00 Colby, hit it. You are Locked-on Mariners. Your daily Seattle Mariners podcast. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Oh, hooy, sailors. It is Thursday, August 6th, 26. My name is Tadding Gonzalez, and I'm joined, as always, by my coach, Colby Patnode. This episode is brought to you by GameTime.
Starting point is 00:00:34 Download the GameTime app, create an account, and use the promo code locked on. That's L-O-C-E-D-O-N for 20. dollars off your first purchase. So the mayor has won a fun one last night, four to two. Got a benches clearing incident. Julio hit a three run bomb. Randy had a fantastic game, both offensively and defensively.
Starting point is 00:00:53 Colt Emerson hit a bomb. I had a great time at the ballpark last night. But in the other two games of this three game set with the Tigers, the mayor is lose by a combined score of 19 to nothing. The Tigers sold at the deadline greatly. by the way. And once again, following a game that looked like a potential turning point for this ball club, yeah, they immediately got dog walked, part for the course for the 2026 Seattle
Starting point is 00:01:24 Mariners. How are you doing, Colby? Because I'm doing great. You know, not spectacular because the mariners have continued a disappointing trend in which you circle a moment as like this is the day this is the day that turned their season around and this is when they're going to dial it in and as has often been the case this entire season every time you think you have one of those moments you get destroyed in the next game or two and you're right back down to where you were and felt pretty good after that Cole Young home run against the giants and you came out and you won the next day and you're like all right there we are we're back and nope nope you lost two or three to the reds you go out there and you know you win the first series of this one, a couple walkoffs against an equally like playing well team that was really hitting and like, hey, you know, one of those games, we kind of stole the other one. We were the better team for eight innings.
Starting point is 00:02:21 We sucked really bad for one and we found a way to win. Like, okay, cool. And then, woof, you get dog walked on Tuesday. And then Wednesday, you have this big, you know, home run and there's the benches clearing incident and, like, you pitch well and you play really good defense and everybody's just super dialed. And you're like, okay, okay. You know, they won three of the last four.
Starting point is 00:02:42 Like, we're going to take the series today before the raise come into town with some momentum. And then they just, the game was over, like four batterers into the game. Like, it's just over. Like, this team can't hit. They're one of the worst offenses we've seen in Seattle. And that's saying something for all the mid-2010s teams we had to watch. They can't hit. They're not hitting home runs.
Starting point is 00:03:07 And they're pitching, their starting pitching has been. been pretty bad since the All-Star break. Now, it's had moments, but it's also had a lot of just kind of mediocre outings. And Bryce was terrible in the first inning today, into that game before he even had really a shot to get into it. And, you know, to give Bryce some degree of credit, he was able to kind of scratch his way through five. And his last inning was actually the best he's looked in a while. But Bryce has been pretty bad now for the last month or so, the last four or five starts. he's been pretty bad.
Starting point is 00:03:39 He had one pretty good start mixed in there. But other than that, it's been pretty bad. The Velo's down over the last handful of starts noticeably. He is really struggling with command and control. And he's just not really giving you a chance to win right now. And again, that was the case. And unfortunately, because this offense is so terrible, every run that you are down feels like you got to hit a three run homer just to even things up.
Starting point is 00:04:05 Like that that's the degree of difficulty. There is no margin of error with this. offense. So, you know, your, your starter has to be near perfect. And, and that sucks. It's not fair to the starter. But that's the reality of where we're at. And when you give up three runs in the first, what, five hitters of the game, like, it's over. You're not going to recover from that. And you set yourself up to be in a position where even if your starter can keep things close, and, you know, just kind of keep a lid on it, just kind of contain and just really give your offense a chance to work. You don't have the arms in the bullpen to extend this game into the ninth
Starting point is 00:04:37 inning because your middle guys suck, which thankfully Jerry and Justin went to work and really added those J.T. Chaguas and the Drew Steckinwriters and those guys who were just nails and even though you're down three to nothing, it's like, okay, well, it's probably only going to be a three nothing game in the eighth or ninth inning because our bullpen
Starting point is 00:04:53 is so good. We can get back into this thing. Oops. Nope. Didn't do that either. I mean, it's a good thing that they acquired those relievers that they were so confident they were going to land that they were reportedly so confident they were going to land on Monday. Ty, did you want them to trade
Starting point is 00:05:08 A ball, Corbyn Dickerson for four years of Lake Walker. They just have such unique needs, Colby. You just, you wouldn't understand. I mean, we're so talented with our,
Starting point is 00:05:19 you know, 55 and 60 records. Such unique needs, like a right-handed hitting corner outfielder and a, relief help. Maybe a utility infielder so that Colt Emerson, Colt Emerson doesn't get hung out to dry over the next month until,
Starting point is 00:05:33 no, I mean, like, what other team has those needs at the deadline? which is why you don't build your team to be fixed at the deadline because it doesn't always work out like it did last year. We're having the same conversation again. But yeah, this team to be as transparent about as possible, they suck. It's a bad baseball team.
Starting point is 00:05:54 And thankfully, the other eight teams competing for the two playoff spots that are available to them also are fully capable of being terrible and have been worse than the Mariners for stretches this year. And so, yeah, could the mayor, are the mayor still in it? Yeah. Annoying it. But yeah, they are. Yeah. No, they're still in it. Cool.
Starting point is 00:06:12 Great. Awesome. But this, this today is exactly why last week after that Rangers game I got on the show. And I was like, I'm out. I'm out. Because last night, again, is another one of those games where it's like, that has to be the turning point. Like, that has to be it. And then they immediately come out of that game and this happens.
Starting point is 00:06:34 like I tweeted this last night like if if you know if that wasn't the turning point last night nothing was going to be it that's why I'm out on this team this is why I'm I cannot buy in on the 2026 Seattle Marys anymore I can't I'll tell you what's really good faith I can't I'm sorry and what's really frustrating about that is hey this is really bad timing because obviously they just nearly got to the world series last year but there's going to be a lockout it seems highly likely that games are going to be missed. So it's going to be a long winter. We're not going to have any kind of good vibes to end on.
Starting point is 00:07:08 But more, more disturbing than that even is this team is just a terrible watch. They're not even fun to watch. Like if you're bad, at least be entertaining. They're not. They're just bad. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:07:17 they're just so, they're boring. They play bad fundamental baseball. Yeah, they're just like, it's just an unlikable watch. They sound extremely tone deaf, pretty much every single time they talk to the press.
Starting point is 00:07:32 There's very, there's not really much accountability being shown publicly at the very least. And it's just, like you said, they play sloppy baseball. They're just, they're not fun to, they don't run. Like, they're not running the bases aggressively. They're not, you know, they don't have prominent relief pitching. That's fun to watch. I mean, they don't really even have that many young studs who are up to really help this team.
Starting point is 00:07:53 Everybody who's up right now has kind of been around the block. There's no new excitement level. Colt Emerson's the newest guy. And, okay, well, we've seen him for a couple months now in the last couple, And the last month has been terrible outside of a couple of isolated incidents. He's been awful. So like we don't even have that excitement. We have Kate Anderson sitting down there.
Starting point is 00:08:12 We have Michael Royo sitting down there. We have Las Montes sitting down there. And like, cool. But that doesn't matter. Like nobody cares what's happening with the Tacoma Rainiers, the average fan. They want to see those guys at the big league level. And then you have to kind of weigh like, well, is it too soon? And like, what do you do?
Starting point is 00:08:28 Like, what does that say? Blah, blah, blah. But like, there's just nothing about this team that, like, once that makes you want to dial it in and watch every night. Julio's not on a heater right now, right? Cow's not on a heater right now. Randy's good, but Randy kind of,
Starting point is 00:08:43 you know, the slap hitter who just kind of, you know, hits a lot of singles. Like, it's just, that's not, people aren't going to tune in and be excited to watch that.
Starting point is 00:08:50 And not when he's the only one doing it, you know, so it's just not a lot here. The team doesn't play incredible defense. There's not a fun player really to watch on this team right now. Like Cole Young is like the best player on the team. And no disrespect. to Cole, who's great, should have been an all-star.
Starting point is 00:09:05 You're in big, big trouble. Cole Young is your best player. You're in big trouble. And that's kind of a reality situation. It's Dom, it's Randy. And then it's like, what am I going to get from anyone else? Right. And oh, by the way, to top it all off, today, they ran out of a lineup that had Weston
Starting point is 00:09:23 Wilson, Leo Rivas, Johnny Parada, and Colt Emerson, Colt Emerson in it, all hitting back to back to back, back. like yeah that's the best you can do hint it's not but they're choosing to do that anyways like the mariners lineup that they threw out there today is the lineup you roll out there when you've secured a series win and you're like yeah you know we win this one that's gravy if not whatever and i get it like i'm not saying that cow had to catch today he's probably sore from yesterday and he's probably yeah but like yeah you can't kick games it's more it's more a testament to the lack of depth that they have though the fact that like
Starting point is 00:10:00 Even with some of their reported interests, like it was never reported like, hey, they're looking at to add another bench bat on top of getting Taylor Ward. That was never reported. That was never speculated on. Should have been. And like that that's an issue because it's like you have guys on on this roster that frankly aren't cutting it. Just what it is. I'm not trying to be, you know, mean about it. It's just that's what it is.
Starting point is 00:10:25 Like there are just some guys on this roster that should not be on a team that went into the season with World Series. series aspirations. And still, you know, somehow, some way, by the grace of the baseball gods, has a chance to win this division and maybe even get the second seat in the American League and not even have to play in the wildcard round. Yeah. I mean, I have a feeling that that thought process will change after we watch the race come in here and, you know, play the type of baseball. The Mariners probably should be trying to play, but whatever. But, you know, the Astros will probably get swept on the weekend, you know, because that's just how this season has gone, though. You know, but it's just frustrating because like they're not even putting they're not playing well and then they're not even putting their best foot forward like Leo Rivas is not a major leaguer. I'm sorry he's not. He was he helped last year, but he's not a major leaguer this year. Victor Robles is not a major leaguer this year. Weston Wilson is not a major league. Like what do we do? And we're putting them all in the lineup on the same day on a rubber match against a good team like a team that's playing really good baseball and has been one of the best offenses in baseball since June 1st against like a legitimate pitch.
Starting point is 00:11:30 pitcher like what you didn't want to balance this out a little bit and maybe play rivas yesterday or and it's like you just can't have a left-handed pitcher going there and be like oh well i mean we got a bench we got a bench uh donovan and we got a bench cow and we got it like you have to think ahead you have to think a couple steps ahead and this lineup it just was not a majorly quality lineup tonight uh at all like nothing resembling it and then on top of that that week bottom half the lineup the top of your lineup didn't really do anything So like it's just it's a perfect storm and we see why I talk about this a lot every winter like I want them to improve the bench I want them to care about the bench they should need to care about the bench and they never ever do and this year we're finding out hey if your catchers not hitting 60 home runs to cover up for a lot of things your depth issues come into play the merits didn't have a good bench last year and they got away with it why because they had the MVP or should have been MVP and you know they had Julio playing really well for most of the They had Randy playing well for the first half of the year.
Starting point is 00:12:32 They didn't have a bench last year. They didn't have one this year. And for a team that is going to be, let's call it cheap, which they are, the bench is actually critically important to them because they can't just go out at the deadline and trade for a big contract and be like, oh, well, you know, we'll just replace that way. No, you have to, you have to cultivate your own players. And there are guys in Tacoma right now who can help you more than the guys who are hitting 6, 7, 8, 9 today. And the Mariners, as far as we can tell, haven't even considered them at all. it's just wild to me that they are so uninterested in improving in the margins for a team that needs to win in the margins, desperately needs to win because they don't have the payroll and they're not going to get the 60 home run cow. They're not going to get 40 home run Julio.
Starting point is 00:13:16 That's just not going to happen. And that's kind of what they needed to have happened to survive the storm that has hit them this year. And surprise, neither of those things have happened. And now you're paying the price for it. All right. Well, clearly today's episode is just going to be us ranting. which honestly, I think we need to do. And I think this has been long overdue.

So the Seattle Mariners are 56 and 60 on this season after today's loss. to the Detroit Tigers, and yet they are still well within striking distance of a playoff spot. They're what a game and a half out from the wild card right now? Yep.
Starting point is 00:16:15 How? How? This team, like you said, and I usually don't typically like use this strong of language when talking about, you know, the Mariners. I try to keep it chill as as much as I possibly can. But like,
Starting point is 00:16:30 yeah, you're right. This team sucks. Like they do. I'm sorry, but they suck. They suck. They suck to watch. They suck fundamentally. And also, like, what are they feeding these guys offensively right now? Because, like, Taylor Ward was on this, like, historic trajectory of not chasing this year. And then immediately comes to Seattle.
Starting point is 00:16:51 I know it's only been a couple of games. I'm not trying to overreact here. But still, like, it's just a little funny that, like, in his first set bat in Ameris uniform, he chases the splitter for strike three. and he's been chasing on a few other pitches over these last couple of games. Like what? What is it going on?
Starting point is 00:17:11 Yeah, I mean, like, to be fair, remember how rough Josh Naylor's first couple games were last year? Yeah, I know. With the club. Oh, this guy doesn't strike out. He's perfect. And then he had like a 50% strikeout rate in his first series. But it's just like, it's the quintessential Mariners experience,
Starting point is 00:17:26 Colby. It's just like, of course. Of course. Right. And I'm not trying to say like, oh, Taylor Ward. came here and now he's like again I'm not trying to overreact to three games
Starting point is 00:17:36 but still it's just like sure we saw a lot of guys have really rough debuts with their new team not just the Mariner guys I saw what Casey Mize did last night against Arizona he went like four innings and gave up like nine runs so
Starting point is 00:17:51 yeah there were a lot of guys who really struggled in their first series with their new team so I don't know if that's like coincidence or there's a lot happening in that short time span you know so whatever. But yeah. Yeah, it's.
Starting point is 00:18:06 No, I get it. Like, let me, let me, just to be fair. Like, I get it. There's a lot that's going on, a lot of movie pieces here. Like, suddenly you find out you're getting traded across the country and Taylor Ward's, you know, a specific, you know, experience here. But like, yeah, it's just like, of course, man. Like, of course, of course. But so, like, this is the most, again, this is the most talented lineup they've had.
Starting point is 00:18:32 And what, 25 years? And they can't hit. How? And it clearly wasn't the assistant hitting coach's fault. It wasn't Bobby Boggianus's fault. It really is wild too because like, oh, the Mariners strike out too much. Like that has been the common thing for the last couple years. And it's like, I mean, they took steps to lower that number.
Starting point is 00:18:58 Cole Young doesn't strike out a ton. Donovan doesn't strike out a ton. war doesn't strike out a ton like who uh randy's really cut down his strikeout rate like Julio's I think down around 20% now like that's significant and so it's like okay so strikeouts aren't really a problem uh it's it's home runs like it we can get as like oh they need to play small ball and it's like they need to hit home runs they are built to hit home runs and that if they're not going to do it then you're screwed you're just not it's not just the mariner's by the way it is very very difficult to get three singles in a row to score a run yeah so it's just one of
Starting point is 00:19:37 those things where it's like you have to play as you were designed to play and and that's you have to hit home runs you have to take walks you have to hit the two three run home run you have to pitch pretty well and then if you can kind of find a way to to scratch out a run or two a night in the in the small ball way you know steel base move them over sack fly whatever on top of hitting your one to two home runs, you're going to win a lot of the times. And we've seen them, by the way. They had a graphic yesterday, I believe it was.
Starting point is 00:20:05 When the Mariners get two extra base hits, not even home runs, just two extra base hits in a game, their winning percentage is like $750. When they get one, it's like $3.80. And then when they get zero, they've won one out of 15 games this year. I don't think they had an extra base sit today. So one out of 17.
Starting point is 00:20:25 They're one in 15 or whatever in games where they do. don't have an extra base hit. So it's not rocket science. You can get as upset as you want about it, but this is the modern game and the way you score runs and the modern game is you hit home runs. You slug. And we know T-Mobile Park is not a good ballpark for doubles and triples. There's not a lot of foul territory down the lines.
Starting point is 00:20:43 The gaps aren't that long and balls hang up. When you hit line drives into the gaps, they hang up because of the marine layer. So, you know, it's not a great ballpark for stringing together's doubles and triples and there's really not much you can do about that. Like, so you have to hit home runs. You have to draw walks. You have to hit home runs. And the Mariners just aren't doing that.
Starting point is 00:21:04 And so it is kind of one of those things where it's like, hey, we went out and we got Taylor Ward, a move I like. It's like, okay, Taylor Ward's in like a historic home run drought right now. And you're not exactly having a problem getting on base, although that's not good. Don't get me wrong. But like, you need power. You need thump. And they didn't go out and get another, like a power guy.
Starting point is 00:21:23 Like, we get, we get a complaint. all we want about like how bad a eugenio Suarez is at this ballpark but at least he would hit some tanks you know and and today they ran out Leo freaking Rebos in Weston Wilson in a series deciding game on the corners yeah and you have to treat every every series now needs to be treated like a like your life depends on it like your season depends on us right now yeah now again today like does that mean like oh well we have to throw up Sir Anthony Dominguez when it's 8-0 because like we have to pretend we can win this game.
Starting point is 00:22:01 No, no. Like once that game got out of handoff. There's obviously limitations to what we're saying, but still it's like, you can't have West and Wilson and Leo Rivas as your starting quarters ever. Yeah, yeah. Like you are not the Dodgers

Starting point is 00:24:26 Colby, entering today, they were 28th in slugging percentage. They are, they were tied for dead last and batting average. And they were tied for 24th and on base percentage. Yeah. This is a lineup that again, right now, currently, right now, this very second, even with the injuries, has Cole Young, is having a breakout season, Dominic Cansoe, who's having a breakout season, Randy of Rosarana, who's having a career year, contract year,
Starting point is 00:25:00 Randy or Rosarana is a thing. Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodriguez, Josh Naylor, Brennan Donovan, Taylor Ward. Like if I told you at the beginning of the season, if I told you at the beginning of the season,
Starting point is 00:25:13 that those are the guys that you're going to be running out in August, you would have been like, dude, that's like going to be a top five offense, right? Yeah. Yeah. It's,
Starting point is 00:25:24 you just named like seven all-star quality players. now not all those players have an all-star quality years obviously and that's the big issue here but like nailer's an all-star quality player Julio Cal Randy those are all-star quality players canzone's having an all-star quality year Cole Young's having an all-star quality year Brennan Donovan is an all-star quality player jp. Crawford is kind of probably a step below that but jp.'s also been on the aisle three separate times so it's kind of tough to to grade him and where he fits into this going forward but like yeah your lineup one through nine is not bad even with all the injuries and all that like on paper it's pretty darn good you just 10 through 13 you got nothing and your nine guys that should play every day only about a third of them are playing up to an acceptable standard at the moment so you really your lineup really is three guys and then you're hoping Julio catches fire you're hoping that Cal catches fire I don't even know if they're hoping for Cal anymore at this stage I think they might just be all in on Julio you know it's funny we talk about Julio like really disappointing year at the plate you know 115 WRC plus thereabouts like not what you want but not
Starting point is 00:26:37 that homer that he hit last night was so that was impressive yeah and you know you're like oh there it is he's going to turn her and then what do you come out and do today his his bat flip was literally like right in front of me too it was so sick yeah yeah like it just sucks
Starting point is 00:26:55 because like this team for pretty much the entire year has had things not go the way that they thought they were going to go. And they've shown zero ability to pivot to improv to kind of, you know, even when things go well, like, oh my gosh, look at this. We found a quality number three starter for our sixth starter. And it coincides with one of our five best guys getting hurt. This is amazing. And then what happens? They can't figure out how to make that work.
Starting point is 00:27:24 and they just kind of fluster and they don't communicate it well. And then there's just this big thing. They didn't handle the Randy and Cal thing all that well. Then they didn't figure out until July that Canzone could hit lefties. And they kept on taking Braley out of the game when he was insanely hot in like the fifth inning. So that Rob Restnider, who sucked all year got at bats in the seventh inning against good right-handed pit. Like they just, they don't have any idea what they're doing. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:51 Like they have a plan. and then the plan doesn't go exactly perfectly right. And they panic. It's that it's that SpongeBob scene where his brain's on fire and they're all running around with like the files being thrown around. Like, what are you doing? This isn't that hard. Like I'm not saying it's easy, but it's not that complicated to figure out what to do here. And they seem to fail pretty much at every single step from the front office all the way down to the players.
Starting point is 00:28:18 Yeah. I think I've said this before on the show. I definitely have said it on the piece. Patreon and I've said it on a couple other people's shows, but just to kind of reiterate it because it goes straight into what you're saying, it's like, this is the first year where like, and don't get me wrong, there have been many things at this front office and the organization has done where I'm like, I don't understand, but like, at the very least, like, or not that I don't understand.
Starting point is 00:28:46 It's more like, I don't like that, but like I can wrap my head around how you got to that point. This year, like a lot of the things that they've done, like, I, I can't get behind it. Like, I can't justify it. Like, I can't wrap my head around it. Like, I can't figure out, like, why they are doing some of the things that they are doing this year. The Domkan's own thing. I'm glad that you mentioned that because that's like, that isn't the biggest thing here.
Starting point is 00:29:13 But that, to me, is like one of the most baffling things that like, okay, yeah, fine. You want to, you know, because again, we weren't sold. on you and I weren't sold on Canzone going into the season. So like I get it to a certain degree like you don't want to overexpose him and all that. Because like what if last year was a fluke? And obviously he didn't have good playoffs and all that. But like why did you completely hide him from lefties for like the entire first half of the season? It's not because oh, Victor was so good or Rob was so good.
Starting point is 00:29:43 Like what do you want us to do? Like no. You were playing Connor Joe off of over him willingly. Yeah. Like what's? it's just the inability to to get off schedule and kind of you know sometimes that is a benefit because like sometimes you do just have to ride out the storm and just kind of you know let the let the season happen and you do need to collect a sample size but sometimes like it has been this
Starting point is 00:30:07 year it's to your detriment that you're so hardheaded that this is the way we have to do it this is the way we have to do it after as game after game as series after series just ticks away and you just keep on taking these ls and then you want to wake up on August 6th and you're starting Leo Rivas and Weston Wilson on the corners against Framper Valdez. And again, you really need to win because you're about to get your doors blown off over the weekend by a good, competent baseball team because you're not one.
Starting point is 00:30:34 Like, we talk about this. We talked about this in April and May. It's like, look, it's early. But nickels and dimes. I've said that all year.
Starting point is 00:30:42 And I meant it. Like, yeah, not seem like a big deal here. It might not seem like a big deal here. But eventually those are going to add up. And you're going to be missing real dollars in like hundreds of them rather than just a nickel here, a dime there. You screwed yourself because of your inaction and your inability to pivot at a timely manner. So, I mean, again, they're still in it by the grace of, you know, the baseball gods.
Starting point is 00:31:07 Yeah. Maybe. Like, you're still in it. Yeah. And there's still time to turn this thing around. Yeah. But watch this team play. Look at who they're playing coming up.
Starting point is 00:31:18 And you tell me you feel good about their odds. no yeah yeah because again because again like who's coming up colby it's going on the list of teams they're coming up here we got the raise this weekend yeah then you go on the road to play the yankees uh yep and then after that you play it so so so the next two series against the two best teams of the american league the two like actual good teams in the american league cool good to know all right you're gonna face you're probably not going to face schlittler and young or uh uh Cole. But you're still going to face free, you know, so it's not like it's a cake walk. It doesn't matter. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:57 Yeah. Yeah. So you play the Yankees for three. And then you go travel no off day in between. You travel straight down to Houston. You've actually like the only team all year you played well against the Houston Astros. So maybe that's a blessing in the sky. Maybe you go down there.
Starting point is 00:32:11 Most of those games when they couldn't pitch. So they've kind of, they've kind of figured that all a little bit. The bullpen has been good recently. The starting pitch. team. Their fans are having a very similar deadline discussion that we're having. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:28 So anyways, Houston for three, which again, maybe that helps because the dials you back in, but who knows? I'm not predicting this team. Then you get a day off on Monday, but you got to fly back up north to play Milwaukee, best team in the national league. And then you got to fly across the country from Milwaukee, no off day. and the Cubs come into town, who are red hot right now, then you got to play the Phillies until your next off day,
Starting point is 00:32:54 and then you get an off day on Thursday, but you're flying out of the country to go play the Blue Jays, who, well, not as good as last year, certainly talented and certainly can give you some issues there. Before you then go down to Boston, who hasn't lost in like two months, before you come back home, again, you fly across the country with no off day in between.
Starting point is 00:33:13 again. And then that's when you're when your Cupcake quote unquote part of the schedule starts and you get four against the A's, three against the Rangers, three against the A's, three against the Angels,
Starting point is 00:33:25 three against the Rockies, two against Houston, four against the Angels. Like you're playing like 17 of your 22 games in September against garbage teams. Now does that matter for the Mariners? No, probably not.
Starting point is 00:33:37 Not this team. But like, Tampa Bay, New York, Houston, Milwaukee, Chicago. Philadelphia, Toronto, Boston. That's what you got coming up. And oh, by the way, hilariously enough, only one off day before, like during a cross-country
Starting point is 00:33:57 travel, like you get Monday off before you fly to New York and then you fly to Houston, then you get a day off and you go to Milwaukee. So it's brutal, man. Like this is a brutal schedule. It's a brutal stretch and you're not playing well. And I'm supposed to believe that you still have a shot. okay, I'll believe it when I see it. Yeah, I mean, like, the optimistic outlook here is that you somehow find a way to survive this month.
Starting point is 00:34:23 And by survive, I mean, just like be in the same position that you're in right now where you're a couple of games within striking distance. Yeah, if you're within two games of the playoffs heading into September, A, I will be shocked. Absolutely shocked. And B, I'll probably pick you to make the playoffs. Yeah. Like, still, despite it all. So we'll see how it goes. like, yeah, that's schedule.
Starting point is 00:34:45 And I know, like, well, who's going to be heard? Who's going to be playing well? The mayors can be playing their best baseball in three weeks. And, you know, we don't know. And maybe so-and-so gets heard. And that series looks easy. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Who cares?
Starting point is 00:34:57 Yeah. You're playing like eight teams in a row that are better than you, straight up. Yeah. So, yeah, if they're only two or three games out, by the time we get to the soft part of the schedule in early September, they'll have a legitimate shot. how confident am I that they'll be in that position by the time they get there? 0.54%.
Starting point is 00:35:18 0.54%. And I mean, like, if you still are, that's you. I hope you're right. I hope you're right. I hope you're right to. I hope you're right to. I am not going to be the guy who's sitting here like, I don't even want to make the playoffs. No, of course.
Starting point is 00:35:38 Of course. Of course I want to make the playoffs five times in your entire existence. of course. I don't care if they get swept. Of course I want them to be in the playoffs. Or are you nuts? So I hope you're right. Yeah, I hope you're right too.
Starting point is 00:35:51 It's just, you want us to be honest, right? You come to the show for honesty, right? I just don't see it. I think a chunk of people do, sure. Yeah, yeah. Right? Like, I just,
Starting point is 00:36:05 people just like to see us, you know, make ourselves look like idiots, which we do that a lot. And hopefully we're doing that again. right now. As I've said, plenty of times. Clip this,
Starting point is 00:36:17 played in the post game package when the team split. Like nobody believed in us. It's just streaming like a lunatic. Yeah. Throw this up on Mariners of a vision or whatever it's called now. The fire TV thing. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:28 Throw it up there when they're hosting game four of the ALCS and they're up three to nothing. And they're just like, I mean, they haven't lost the game in four weeks. Like throw this up there. I'll happily wear that. I'll be in the ballpark being like, yep,
