The hat stays on, folks.
6 to 2, the final score from T-Mobile Park.
Mariners beat the Astros to pull back within half a game of Houston
and will look to reinsert themselves in the third and final wild card spot
in the American League in tomorrow night's series finale.
Colby, a lot to unpack here with this one.
But to start things off, just your general thoughts following the biggest win of the
Mariners season thus far?
Yeah, they didn't play that well.
Now, let's be clear about this.
Houston helped them out a lot tonight, but.
And we will take it.
Yeah, absolutely, you will.
Yeah, it was kind of an interesting night because Javier was not good.
You know, and the offense, they got his pitch count up,
and they were certainly having better quality at bats than they were last night against
furlander but they really were still kind of lacking that big hit to kind of like put the dagger
and they didn't really get it until montero came in and even that was a little bit lucky cowrolley
breaks is bad and and all of that and somehow two runs score on a single but uh you know you take it
and all that so sometimes you know you need those breaks to go your way and lately it's felt
like none of them have gone your way but when you look when you watch the game it's just like
a hole and you kind of take in and you understand like that's baseball sometimes.
the Mariners played
they played a much cleaner game
than Houston certainly did
so that's the big difference
but I think the storyline coming out
of tonight's game is probably
George Kirby you know we talked about
earlier today or yesterday
if you guys are listening to this later
about how you really needed
playoff Luis Castillo
to pitch last night and he didn't get it
and that was a huge disappointment
and it put so much pressure on Kirby
who has not been good for the last month or so to go out and be playoff George.
I don't think he was quite as dominant as he was in his playoff start against the Astros,
but he was pretty darn good.
Not a lot of whiffs.
I think he only had 10 whiffs on, let's see what it is, 10 wiffs on 53 swings.
So that is not a high ratio.
Didn't rack up the strikeouts.
But again, he only walked one guy, and that was an intentional walk.
He only allowed five hard hit balls.
You look at the average exit loss.
on his slider, his sinker, and his four-seamer, all of which he threw pretty equally,
31-slider, 31-per-syncer, 29% foreseam.
You look at the average exit belos on those, 82.3, 84.1, 85.8.
A lot of medium and soft contact there.
And that's, you know, he was on the corners.
The two-seamer riding in on the righties was a really effective pitch for him today.
The slider breaking away was a really good combo to kind of deal with the righties in the
lineup. So, you know, he found himself in a lot of trouble in the first, got out of it,
big time. And that pretty much, you know, saved the game more or less because you just can't
afford to play from behind when you're, you know, stressing and you're putting, you know, as much
pressure on yourself as the Mariners are right now. So really after the first inning, he cruised
through the second through fifth and then the sixth, you know, got a little bit of trouble.
You know, Tay Oscar made a fantastic play to kind of help bail him out.
But yeah, overall, George was much better.
It's his best start since the Baltimore start against a good lineup.
When the Mariners needed it, he gave it to him.
You know, we can nitpick.
Again, not a lot of strikeouts, not a lot of whiffs.
He only went six despite throwing just 84 pitches.
And, you know, it's you want him to go seven so that you can save the bullpen a little bit.
We can nitpick the start here and there.
But for the most part, he was on the corners of the plate.
you know, he was able to move up, down, left, right, and he really had a good three-pitch mix there.
Only a couple splits, only a couple curveballs.
It was just focusing on what was working tonight.
That was the two-seam slider combo, and he pulled it off really well.
And it's, you know, again, at some point you'd like for George to be the guy who goes out there and goes seven and strikes out nine and all that.
But George is going to, you know, teams are going to make contact against George because we've talked about this.
His stuff is good, but it's not at least.
and it plays up because of his great command.
And tonight he had a really good command.
And that's how he was able to generate a lot of really soft ground balls and pop-ups.
So really good night from George, right when the Mariners needed it.
You know, Matt Brash comes in when Topa can't get the job done and it just shoves.
And then, you know, Andres, he got three outs.
Let's put it that way.
That was.
That was exciting.
Yeah.
We needed a little excitement to prepare us for it.
We did not.
we needed to get
you know prepared for tomorrow night
because tomorrow night is going to be
anxiety inducing
but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it
yeah so very good start
for George he had a very clear
and concise plan tonight and he executed it
maybe not perfectly
but very very well
five hits over six innings pitch
just the one walk like you mentioned it was an intentional walk
though he did throw three balls
to Kyle Tucker so it was essentially
a walk. Four strikeouts on the 84
pitches and only five hard hit balls given up and the way that he was
able to maneuver his way out of damage or out of any
damage done. And the first inning was very impressive and that was really
the Astros one big chance tonight against Kirby at least.
And when he shut that down, he was able to cruise for the next few
innings. I think the most pitches he threw
from
innings two through five,
two through four was 11, something like that.
He was really, really cruising
from that point forward.
It was a little surprise, yeah, that they, you know,
that service went to the bullpen in the
seventh inning.
But, you know,
they were able to work their way out of it.
Matt Brash was incredible tonight.
After, you know,
Justin Topa really struggled. He
hit Yiner Diaz on the knee and
then gave up a couple of a base hits loaded the bases and then you know brash comes through he
gives up the sack fly um which is fine you know just keep it there though and then he comes
back to strike out al tuve had a nasty back door slider um that was just awesome um and then gets
uh bregman to to ground out and you know at that point it's it's five to one
I think you had no other choice here if you're Scott's service to ask Brash to go back out there and throw another inning.
I just, I don't know if I, I don't know if I felt very good about going to anyone else there in that situation.
I know that they had Spire warming up and, you know, you have, back to back.
Yeah, you have Yordon and Tucker do up.
Spire's been a lot better against lefties lately than righties.
Yeah.
You don't have a day off for the next few days.
But I think, you know, more importantly, we talked about like earlier in the week, like,
What does Scott managing this like it's a playoff game?
What does that look like?
It looks like tonight.
Brash goes two because he has to come in and the seventh and get out of a jam.
And then you look at the lineup card and you go, oh, three, four, five.
Yeah, we're going to stick with Brash because the pitch count was good.
And then you go, oh, we're up by five in the ninth.
It doesn't matter.
We're going to Andres Munoz because we can't risk this, you know,
you can't risk losing this one.
And it didn't exactly work out the way you wanted it to.
But it worked out well enough.
So, yeah, this Scott managed tonight, like it was a playoff game.
Like it was a do-or-die playoff game.
And it basically was.
So that's what it looks like.
And you can certainly understand why they sent Brash back out there.
Again, that's why I probably would have pushed Kirby.
But if George comes in and tells you that he's done, then I guess he's done.
And there's not a lot you can do about that.
He did throw a lot of pitches in the first.
And he did throw a lot of high-stress pitches in the second or in the sixth.
So maybe that comes into play.
but, you know, it is what it is.
You had to win this game, and George and Brash did a lot of the heavy lifting for you tonight.
Yeah, yeah, awesome, awesome outings from both of those guys, especially Matt Brash.
That was an incredible, incredible performance.
Scott Ser was saying that that was the most efficient two innings of Matt Brash's life.
That feels like recency bias, but, you know, whatever, whatever.
Remember the first time through the order against the White Sox in his major league debut?
that was pretty efficient
but also I think this was only the second time
Brash has gone two full innings
as a believer in his career
so you know not a lot of
not a lot of comparison
so yeah
yeah I'll have to check back on that
I don't think we've seen that much out of him
in his young career but
you know they
Scott Service called his number tonight and he
came through and then some so a hell of a job
by Matt Brash tonight
we're going to talk about the
very interesting incident that happened with George Kirby before the end of his start and more in just a moment.

Thank you again for making us your first listen after the mayor is six to two victory
over the Houston Astros.
Tomorrow is the biggest game of the season.
And it comes down between these.
two teams. You can catch all the action on the mayor's hometown broadcast with Sirius XM via the
XXM app. I got to give a hand here to the Mariners. It would have been very easy for them to come out
tonight, play flat, basically just curl up and die after the way the last four games have gone.
But this was one hell of a response by this ball club. Jobs obviously far from finished, right?
They still have a lot of work to be done here, starting with tomorrow night and that big game.
But yeah, I got to commend them for what they did tonight.
That was very impressive.
Yeah, really cool, really cool stuff.
Yeah.
So very, very weird incident occurred before the end of George Kirby's night tonight.
Kirby asked for a ball from the Empire, but he already had a ball on his hand.
and all of a sudden,
here comes a ball, not from the umpire,
but from the third baseline stands,
and it hits him in the chest.
There were a lot of Astros fans on that side of the stands,
because that's obviously where the Astros dugout is,
but it wasn't an Astros fan,
at least, you know, that we know of.
Maybe it was someone undercover,
but they were wearing a Jared Kelnick City Connect jersey,
and they were promptly asked to leave the,
premises. Let's just put this out there right now. If you're throwing the ball back on the field,
you're a loser. I don't care if an opponent hit a home run. I don't care if it's a foul ball.
You're pathetic. You're a loser. Give the ball to a kid if you don't want it. Like seriously.
And this idea that like, oh, the fans ragging me on to throw back on. So what? What are you,
what are you proving? Does the home run not count? Because you threw it back. Does, do you think the
mariners are like, oh, wow, look at that arm. We should go sign him to a contract. You're an idiot if you
throw anything on the field, especially a baseball, that could hurt somebody.
Yeah, you're a moron.
And you should be banned for life from every stadium because that is reckless and stupid.
You're not cool.
You're not funny.
It's pathetic.
You look like an idiot.
I don't know those seats weren't cheap.
So, you know, I'm sure you got a nice little slap on the wrist, but you're listening.
You deserve a lot more and just know that I think you're pathetic.
Get the ball to a kid if you don't want it.
Sure. Yeah. So just discussing behavior by that fan. Again, just can't wrap my head around why anyone would do that in that situation. What's the win there?
Yeah, I don't, I don't know. Yeah. What, you're going to get banned from the stadium forever and possibly every stadium in major league baseball forever. Like, okay. Playing stupid games, win stupid prizes, I guess, whatever. So yeah, really dumb. Wanted to acknowledge that, though, a lot.
happened in this game.
But yeah, man, this was a hell of a win for the, for the Mariners, like I said.
Just the resiliency that this team showed tonight is really admirable.
And, you know, they got to, they got to come correct with it tomorrow again.
They got to come back with that same energy.
And they're going to need a hell of a start out of a, out of Bryce Miller.
It seems like that's who's going to go here.
I mean, for me,
I would strongly consider starting Logan Gilbert on short rest.
I don't think that they're going to do that,
but Frambert Valdez is on the bump.
Dillam Moore and Sam Haggurty are probably going to be in that lineup.
But I know that Haggerty has been overall pretty good numbers-wise lately,
but I don't have a ton of faith in this offense,
scoring multiple runs against Framber Valdez tomorrow night.
We'll talk about that more in just a moment.

Thank you again for making us your first listen after the Marr's 6-2 victory over the Houston Astros.
final game of the series tomorrow night on the Mariners hometown broadcast with
Sirius XM via the SXM app so yeah speaking of that game um I don't know what you do here
if you're scott service it's it's because you're going to need to win some games against
Texas as well um so sacrificing a Gilbert start in that series isn't really ideal either
especially for the sake of pitching him on four days rest instead of five days rest um three
days rest instead of four days rest rather um yeah i just because this feels like if you're going to win
this game tomorrow night you're going to win it two to one i i just again considering who's likely
going to be in the lineup against the lefty it's also framberville does he's very very good i know he's
had some bad starts here and there especially one against the mariners down in houston but
overall he's been very good i just feel like if you're going to win this game it's probably going
to be two to one or three to two and i don't know if brumranor's down
Bryce Miller is necessarily the best option to give you, you know, one run, two run ball over six innings.
You had an interesting idea, though, that you were kind of spitballing with me before we started recording.
So you want to share that and maybe we can go over that here a little bit?
I mean, sure.
Typically between starts, usually I think it's the third day.
So the first two days after you pitch, you rest, then you throw a bullpen,
and then you get one more day off, and then you pitch, right?
So whoever's turn it is to throw their bullpen,
and it's usually like, I believe it's like 35 pitches.
Now every organization does differently.
Maybe the marriage don't do this.
I don't know.
But just based on what I know about other organizations,
tomorrow I think would be the day that Wu would throw his 35 pitch bullpen or his 50 pitch
pitch bowl, whatever it is.
Instead of having him throw that bullpen, put him out in the bullpen and just essentially use the 30 pitches that he was going to use in the pen in the game tomorrow, if you have to.
And if you don't, then he throws the bullpen after the game.
It's a little bit risky.
The Rays did something like that with Matt Garza and James Shields early in their career.
You know, if you know a guy is going to go out there and he's going to throw 35, 40 pitch bullpen at 90 percent or 1.
whatever, then why not just save, you know, that ammo for in the game? And you can kind of
piggyback Bryce or you can have Wu out there since Miller might only be able to, or since
Brash might only be able to go on. So it's, it's a bit risky, you know, Woo has to be comfortable
with it. And obviously, you know, this isn't something he's used to doing at all. So it's,
it's not a easy solution. It's not like a no-brainer type of situation here. But I think it is
something you should consider because at this stage, every single pitch counts, every single
out counts and every single, you know, opportunity that you have to gain a little bit of an edge.
You kind of have to take it.
So Wu coming out of the bullpen instead of throwing his, you know, his, his, you know, between start
bullpen, maybe that's something you consider.
Maybe not because he's a young guy and because he's already thrown a lot of pitches this
year and he's thrown a ton of innings.
Maybe he's not even throwing that bullpen in between starts.
don't know. But yeah, just something to consider. But yeah, Miller against Framber is not a
matchup that is going to favor you. Now, you did get Framber once. You did get to him once this
year and you could do it again. But, you know, this is a start where Miller goes out there and he
gives up three runs in the first. Like the game's probably over. And at that stage,
you kind of need to win three or four against Texas to even have a shot, you know, of catching Houston.
So all hands on deck is kind of the thing here.
Obviously, Kirby's not going to be available tomorrow.
Maybe Gilbert is available tomorrow for, you know, 20, 25 pitches and then you start them on normal rest.
But it's just, it's a little bit of a, you're in a tough spot because Miller's not the guy you want taking the ball.
And tomorrow's game, as weird as it is to say, is more important than Thursday.
Thursday's game because if you win tomorrow, Thursday's game will either leave you in a tie
heading into the weekend or it'll give you a one game lead.
Either way, if you win tomorrow, you just have to win the same number of games as Houston
does the rest of the year to get in.
It's a tough spot.
I don't think they're going to ask Gilbert to go in short rest.
I don't think that they're going to ask any of the starters to come into the game or
anything like that, even though it is that type of situation.
where it would make sense in some ways to do that.
So a tough spot.
And, you know, we talked about, hey, maybe you needed to go out
and get another reliever.
Maybe you need to go out and get a swing guy.
Maybe you needed to go out and get a starter.
And this is why.
So you didn't have Bryce Miller.
He's really litigating the deadline again, folks.
Yeah.
Well, forever and always.
But yeah, you know, and then also we did see,
we did see Bryce shove against the Astros, you know,
in one of his starts this year.
So you never know.
It's baseball, but obviously just looking at the pitching matchups right now,
you're at a major disadvantage going into tomorrow's game.
And it is crucial that you win.
If you win tomorrow, your playoff odds go up significantly.
Right.
If you lose tomorrow, I mean, it kind of makes Thursday a muscle.
Like, do you really want to be in a position where you have to win three or four against Texas to even have a shot?
You know, at winning a playoff spot?
Probably not.
So tomorrow's game is absolutely crucial.
So I think you have to kind of consider anything and everything has to be on the table.
Yeah.
So we'll see how it turns out.
One thing to keep an eye on here is Chas McCormick was obviously hit in the back by a Andres Munoz fastball.
And that looked awful.
And he looked wobbly.
He had to be helped off the field by the Astros trainer and Dusty Baker himself.
So hope and the best for Chas McCormick.
Obviously, we don't wish injury upon anyone here.
But that would obviously be a significant loss for Houston tomorrow.
Even though he's a filthy cheater, sure.
Still don't wish any physical harm to him.
Yes, he was a...
He certainly doesn't care about Ty France's physical health.
But, you know, yeah, no, you don't want to see a guy get it.
That looked like that got him like kidney or spleen.
Like that looked like.
Yeah, that looked like something that might cause you to do something that I would say on CTZ, but not on here.
So wish of him the best.
Yeah.
And of course, Dusty's already playing the victim and like, oh, they're always going after our guys.
I'm tired of them.
Did he really?
Did he really?
Let's see.
Dusty's quote, I'm tired of our guys getting hit.
It makes guys a lot bolder when they don't have to hit.
So he's implying that Andres Munoz, who spiked a slider in the other batters box, intentionally hit Chas McCormick with their playoff lives on the line.
Dusty Baker stays a little cry, baby.
Yeah, there are, there are some numbers that I would love to show Dusty Baker and.
Since 2021, Astros pitchers have hit 33 Mariners.
Mariners have hit 17 Astros.
Literally two to one.
stop crying you children yeah um but yeah wish on the best for for chas mccormick we'll see what that means for tomorrow night's game uh that again that would obviously be a pretty big loss for for houston um not just for tomorrow but but potentially moving forward for the rest of the regular season here uh so yeah man tomorrow is going to be nuts um it could go a bunch of different ways um you know unfortunately we have seen a lot of
on many occasions, you know, fans packed T-Mobile Park.
There's a big opportunity at the Mariners' hands,
and it's been a major letdown.
You know, the pessimistic Mariners fan inside me
is kind of expecting that again,
is kind of preparing myself, coddling myself, if you will,
with the expectation of that happening again.
I hope I'm wrong, though.
I hope I'm wrong because we could have a really fun
post-game show tomorrow night if they were able to pull this thing out.
Yeah.
The hope is obviously that the Mariners kind of ride the wave of momentum tonight and
Houston, who made all the mistakes tonight.
Like that kind of piles on that because Houston, I mean, it's probably more important
for Houston to win this game than it is Seattle because Seattle still has a path without
this game.
Houston's path is pretty much we have to sweep Arizona.
who's also fighting for their playoff lives.
But the hope is that they're the team that's tight.
You come out loose and you kind of ride the emotion from this game.
You know, you played fairly well.
You, the at-bats tonight were so much better than they were the night before.
They ran a lot of three-ball counts.
They didn't chase nearly as much, you know, except for Gino, but whatever.
Don't need to talk about that.
Oh, by the way, you know, silly us.
Shame on us for not mentioning that Thai-France.
went yard.
Yeah, I was about to get there.
Okay, okay.
You spent three minutes on the idiot who threw the ball back, so I didn't have time
to do this in segment two.
But yeah, you know, Ty, home run single today.
He had hit last night, I believe, and he was actually pretty good on Saturday and Sunday's
game in Texas.
Maybe just maybe this is the start.
But, you know, we'll see.
He also did have a really bad strikeout in this game.
So we'll see.
But yeah, it was nice to see your offense kind of produced tonight,
without getting really anything from JP and Julio.
Julio had a sack fly, but it just, he did not look good again.
JP was 0 for three with three strikeouts tonight.
Like he was chasing, he was also chasing and expanding the zone.
Like those two guys were not good tonight, but Cal had a couple hits.
And another caught stealing.
Yep, big, big play.
You know, Jared hit a ball heart or Jared had a base hit.
Mike Ford had a base knock.
France had the big game.
Josh Rojas looked really good at the play.
A couple hard hit balls tonight.
Just missed a double or a home run, you know, into right field.
So, yeah, the offense was pretty good tonight.
It wasn't great.
It wasn't exceptional.
It doesn't give me a lot of hope that, you know, the August mariners are back or anything like that.
But, you know, four walks, 11 strikeouts, not the ratio you want.
The offense was okay tonight.
Yeah.
But they were certainly helped by the heirs.
you know, multiple errors at third base.
That led directly to run runs, you know,
because they're petrified of the speed of Mike Ford,
because that makes sense.
So, yeah, Houston certainly helped you out tonight.
Yep.
Houston certainly helped you out tonight.
The offense is going to have to be a little bit better tomorrow even to, you know,
score runs because it's not likely Houston's going to commit three errors.
But obviously the hope here is that you felt the crowd kind of get back into it a little bit.
that you've kind of, you stop the bleeding, you're riding this momentum.
It's kind of a do-or-die game for both sides in a way.
Really both sides, yeah, because I mean, both sides are really struggling this month.
Right.
And you can feel the pressure on both sides, too.
Going into the last series of the year with an edge, even if it's just a game or a half game, is a major difference.
And it feels like an insurmountable mountain to climb for either team, for either team.
for either team really.
Right.
And because Seattle has the tiebreaker,
if they win tomorrow,
they're essentially a game up on Houston
because,
you know,
Houston would have to,
if the mayors win tomorrow,
just to set the stage here,
any combination of three wins after tomorrow's,
if Seattle wins tomorrow,
if they win three or four against Texas,
it doesn't matter what Houston does.
If they go two and two after tomorrow,
if they win again,
then Houston,
has to sweep the diamond backs to get in.
So that's the stakes for tomorrow's game.
And the other side of the Mariners lose,
they have to win at least three or four against Texas to have a shot,
you know,
unless Houston gets swept by the diamond backs.
Then you can win two and still get in.
But tomorrow's game is huge.
It's massive.
And you hope that these guys come prepared.
And, you know,
you hope that Bryce Miller has it.
And you hope the bullpen is 100% ready.
And you hope that the offense is a little bit better,
even than they were tonight.
And you just find a way to win that game.
And then Thursday's game, it's not a freebie.
It's not, you know, you want to win that game.
But if you lose, you still go into the final three games of the season, just needing to match Houston.
That is a massive advantage that you could have if you win tomorrow's game.
And if you don't, we're kind of right back on that same like it's, it's probably over.
Like that that's it's it.
It's all she wrote.
So it's again, the epitome of, you know, we're, it's over.
We're so back.
It's never been more over.
Oh, we're going to the World Series.
that roller coaster all year.
Hopefully they got one more pivot inside of them.
Again,
I would say,
I feel like if the Mariners win tomorrow's game,
they're going to go to the playoffs.
I feel like if they lose,
they're not going to get in.
It does feel like that because it feels like tomorrow.
I mean,
tonight was,
it felt like the life was kind of brought back into this team
and the life was brought back into that building.
I mean,
the crowd was electric tonight.
You know,
every time someone comes up,
they're chanting their name.
JP JP, Teo, Teo, like it was awesome.
It was awesome tonight.
Right.
But it feels like if you went tomorrow, that's like the vibes restore.
Right.
And you're at, you're at home.
And I think Houston is in Arizona, if I'm not mistaken.
Like, yeah.
So it just kind of, it feels better.
Tonight felt kind of like it was game.
It was like the pivotal game of a seven game series.
And it's like, hey, we're down to one.
If we win this, then it's a best of the.
three anybody's ball game.
If we lose, we're down three to one.
And while we still have a shot to, you know, win this series,
it's going to take a little bit of a miracle.
There's a reason it doesn't happen that often.
So tomorrow's game is huge.
And we can't understate that.
Tonight's game was the biggest game.
Yeah, tonight is the biggest game of the year.
Well, guess what?
Now it's tomorrow's the biggest game of the year.
And then guess what, Thursday?
If you don't win, if you win tomorrow, probably not the biggest game of the year.
But then Friday, Saturday, Sunday, biggest game of the year.
So it just kind of compounds on itself.
So hopefully they win tomorrow.
They need it.
I feel like whoever wins the game tomorrow is going to be the last team in the American League.
But we'll see.
Agreed.
We'll leave on this note.
This comes from Jim Mueller on Twitter.
Of note in the clubhouse, there is new decor over a Eugenio Swar's locker,
a neon sign that says good vibes only.
I need that sign.
Wasn't that a new bat?
I will plaster it behind me prominently.
You can buy one.
They're on like Amazon.
Oh really?
Yeah, like that is not like a custom made.
Well, maybe that one is, but like I know you can get one that says good vibes only.
Well, I'm pretty sure I've seen them at like, uh, T.J. Max.
So.
Oh, really?
Oh, well, I might need to, uh, visit Amazon.com here.
No free ads.
All right.
So that's going to do it for us.
Uh, appreciate you guys tuning in.
Uh, hell of a win tonight by the boys.
and hopefully they can do it again tomorrow night.
