So last night, Ryan Bliss made his Major League debut
over at second base for the Mariners.
The ball found him early and often.
And he ended up walking, got pinch hit for later on in the game.
What did you think about his debut, Colby?
And then just generally speaking,
since we haven't had a chance to talk about him on this show,
how much do you think he's going to play?
Do you think he'll be able to contribute?
Yeah, it was a decent.
debut.
I did have the throwing air
that put the tying run on second
and then had another ball
that, you know,
Bryce Miller probably should have fielded,
but it got by him and
Bliss kind of wasn't quite sure how to play it.
He needed to charge it and try to make
the crossbody throw
but to get Jake Myers
but didn't do it.
I just kind of waited for it and it was a close play.
That seemed like he didn't know
who Jake Myers was.
Yeah, like Ryan Bliss also doesn't have the strongest arm in the world.
We already know that.
It's one of the main reasons he can't really play short.
I mean, he can, but like it's why it's not his, you know, likely position.
And he also has a pretty long release.
Like it takes him a while to get rid of the, rid of the baseball.
So there's still some things to clean up there defensively.
But overall, he was fine, drew a walk, hit a ball really hard.
And I believe his second at bat.
Yeah, it was a 102 off the bat to Tal Tauvay.
Right, to Lube, so it actually knocked him over.
which is funny.
I mean,
not that the ball actually knocked him over,
but whatever.
It's pretty funny that the first two batted balls from Bliss went to Altuvae,
given all the,
you know,
the comparisons,
etc.
is a pretty funny bit last night.
Sure,
sure.
You know,
in the first play of Bliss's career as a pop-up from Al-Tube.
Yeah,
yeah.
The first pitch that he ever played in the big leagues,
though.
Yeah,
it was a fine debut.
I mean,
nothing spectacular.
Like I said,
Drew Wock,
had a hard hit ball.
was okay defensively.
Again, anytime you make an error in a game,
it's hard to say you were good defensively.
But, you know, there were a couple of plays that you'd like to see him make that he didn't.
But yeah, he looks fine.
Like he looks like he didn't look, you know, overwhelmed by the moment or anything like that.
So that's really all you can hope for in a debut.
You know, would have liked to see him try and run, try and steal.
It's one of the things he does really well.
But it was a tough situation for Amber's on the mound.
You know, he's got pretty good move.
He's a good athlete.
So, you know, it's, there are two outs.
It's fine that he didn't take off running.
But, no, I think he was, I think he was fine yesterday and how much he's going to play.
I don't know because he's a right-handed bat.
And as we know, only like three right-handed bats get to face right-handed pitching.
So because, you know, the platoon is like undefeated.
Scott's service is more concerned with handedness than Ryan DeVish's comment section.
Yeah.
it's stupid.
But in general, when you look at, you know,
what the mirrors can put out there against a righte
or what they're going to be willing to put out there against a Raleh.
Rojas is going to play.
You have three Rydies in a row coming up, I believe.
So Rojas is going to play.
And he probably should.
Like, I mean, there's nothing wrong with Rojas playing over Bliss.
That's the way it should be.
And then the only other spot or the only other, you know, position or a player
that you could take out to put Bliss in the game is Dylan Moore.
Are you going to take Dylan Moore out of the lineup right now?
No, probably not.
So I don't know if he's going to play throughout the rest of this series.
I don't like it when they call guys up and then just don't play them.
Well, especially when it's a prospect with the status of Ryan Bliss.
Right.
I mean, like, we're not talking about Leo Rivas here.
No, it's not, you're not talking about like top prospect, like, you know, like Harry Ford.
This isn't Cole Young, but again, it's also not Leo Rivas.
Right.
I mean, it's kind of similar to, honestly, it's a little bit similar to Class A,
where it's like, okay, this guy should be playing somewhat regularly because there's still
a chance he can develop into something really helpful and maybe even a everyday player.
So it'll be interesting to see how Scott manages that.
Again, he can play shortstop.
He could probably handle third base if you really need him to.
He's a good enough athlete that I'm sure he could play a corner outfield spot if you needed
him to.
He just hasn't done it.
So I don't think they're going to ask him.
to do it like you know in in the big league so uh yeah as for how much he's going to play it's tough to
say because i don't foresee them taking dillamore out of the lineup anytime soon uh so i don't
know how he gets in there if it's not for rojas and with three righties in a row coming up and
rojas you know being the veteran and being a real just you know it could technically be for
kanzone or raleigh with more playing in the outfield but again or hanniger right
right but I doubt Hanneger plays much
Hanager's probably going to get a DH day in the next
three games and then probably be on the bench for the other two
that would be my guess
but yeah I mean I suppose technically it could be for DH
like you could put him in the DH spot if you want
or something like that so there are ways to get him in the lineup
but just based on how Scott has managed his platoons
the last you know three weeks or so
well really I guess ever since JP got back
it would leave me to believe
that he's only there to face left-handed pitching.
And I think that's a mistake because you might go a week before you see a left-handed pitcher.
And, you know, that's just not a good game plan for Claise, who's also not being.
Lefties are few and far between.
Yeah.
They're about 35% of the pitcher.
So it's, by the way, like you say, oh, well, he'll face lefties, you know, off the bench instead of Rojas.
It's like, cool.
You really want Ryan Bliss to get his fourth big league at bad against Josh Hater.
Like, you know.
So I don't know how much he's going to play.
I don't think he has to play every day.
But I think if you're going to call him up, you should play him at least three or four times a week.
Find the way to get him in there.
So we'll see because you still want to keep him getting reps and you still want to get him, you know, live at bat.
So since he's the guy who called up, he should be playing quite a bit.
But I just, they're not going to bench Rojas for him consistently.
And right now they're not going to bench more for him consistently.
But there are other ways, you know, you can give Dom Kanzone a day off.
you can give Luke Rayleigh a day off, you can give Mitch Garver a day off, you can give Mitch Hanager a day off,
you can give Josh Ross.
Like there are a lot of guys that you can substitute him in for.
Right.
Because JP's back, Dylan Moore is now free to play.
Pretty much cover whatever hole.
Yeah.
You know, you need to cover to get Ryan Bliss in the lineup.
So we'll see.
You know, I would hope, I mean, I kind of hope he's in there today because what I don't want to have happen is I don't want him to sit for three or four days.
and then get back in a game and then he's, you know, trying to prove that he belongs in the big leagues.
He's pressing to get that first hit out of the way.
And, you know, he's getting such sporadic playtime that I don't want this to become a confidence issue for bliss because he was having a really nice month of May.
So, you know, I hope he plays at least another game in this series, maybe two.
Well, also, if you're not going to want to play him, why didn't you just call up Samad Taylor?
Or Rivas.
Or it doesn't even have to be an infielder, right?
Because you have Dillamore.
Could just be Cade Marlowe.
Right.
But, you know, if you're not going to use Ryan Bliss, except only against lefties,
why not just call up Rebos and just do what you did for the last three weeks, play with 25 guys.
Yeah.
Well, and also because they, you know, they apparently don't think that Polanco's injury is going to keep them out for long.
I don't know.
Bliss just doesn't seem like a guy you call up on the short term.
No.
I mean,
again,
that you probably call up a guy like Samad Taylor.
You probably call up a guy like Leo Rivas or Cade Marlowe.
So somebody who's older for,
you know,
prospect status,
a little bit older.
You're not quite worried about stunting the development.
But, you know,
it's not like Ryan Bliss is 20 years old or 21 years old either.
He's 24,
I think,
yeah,
he's 24.
So,
you know,
it's not,
old prospect, but he's not a young prospect either.
So we'll see how they manage it, but I would hope that he, you know, gets at least another start
in this series.
And then I don't know how things line up against Oakland.
I know they have or what they did have a couple lefties in their rotation.
So maybe, yeah, he gets a couple starts this weekend.
But, you know, I really do hope that this isn't just like, oh, yeah, we called him up.
And now he's going to sit eight of the next 10 days.
And we hope Polanco gets back before then.
but we'll see.
Yeah.
All right.
So let's talk about Julio.
Let's talk about Bryce Miller's night coming up here in just a moment.

All you have to do to find that is.
of the word mariners.
So Julio is staying hot.
He went two for four last night,
a couple hard hit singles.
He's now six for his last 13.
A couple home runs,
quite a few ribs over that span,
seven hard hit balls.
And no,
we are not going to talk about
if he's back or not.
We've done this multiple times this season.
I'm not doing it again.
I'm not doing it again.
Coward.
But yes,
Julio looks good.
First Mariner since each year.
To have back to back games with two hits or multiple hits and multiple stolen bases.
There we go.
There you go.
Well, the thing too, right?
You know, with the stolen bases, we talked about this on our Patreon yesterday.
He's like, if he's going to continue hitting for a ton of singles and not a lot of doubles,
he can at least turn those singles into doubles essentially by stealing bases.
Yep.
So he's got he's got four in the last.
Ironically, both times, both steals came in the same inning.
Funny enough
Yeah
Yeah no last night I thought that was cool
Like Montara wasn't paying attention
And Julio was just like okay
I'll just take third thanks
Yeah
So let's talk about
Bryce Miller
Pretty solid last night
He was cruising for a while
Then then hit a bump in the road there
What fourth inning fifth inning
What was it?
Fifth inning
But before that he was
He looked really good
Had a disgusting splitter to
Who was it?
Was it Yordon
Singleton
Singleton, yeah.
Six innings pitch for Bryce,
two earn runs on five hits,
two walks, six Ks.
What do you think about him?
Pretty good.
Ran into some trouble in the fifth
after he had basically pitched
from the windup exclusively for four innings straight.
Guys got on base,
you know,
command kind of started to wait,
you know,
weighing a little bit and it was a little hairy there.
And it looks like the Astros had a really good chance
to tie it.
up or take the lead but you know he buckled down and anytime he goes six innings and you know two
earned really against anybody you did your job as a starting pitcher and uh Bryce was was pretty good
it was it was an interesting mix from from Bryce in this one he threw you know uh 93 pitches 49 of them
were fastballs so 53 percent uh fastball rate which is actually
lowish for Bryce Miller uh now he didn't have a dominate he didn't have a dominate you
didn't have a second pitch that he used a a ton right like he split it up he split up the other 47
percent pretty evenly 17 percent splitter uh 14 percent sweeper 10 two seam 10 percent two seam and 6
percent slider uh but yeah overall you know 21 percent whiff rate on the four seamer not spectacular
it's it's fine uh but you know now what you want to see overall however he did have a 30
percent whiff rate on the splitter.
He had a 50 percent whiff rate on the sweeper.
He threw a 13 sweeper.
He's got six swings, three whiffs.
Also two called strikes on that pitch.
So, you know, he had four called strikes on the, on the two seamer as well,
44% called strike plus whiff on that pitch.
And he even got two called strikes on the, on the slider for 33% call strike plus
whiff.
So the off speed stuff was actually pretty darn good last night.
The fastball, you know, was what it is.
It's still a good fastball.
But the fastball really yesterday was more about command than it was just, you know, dominating with it.
It was just, you know, he threw it.
He threw it.
He got a lot of strikes on it.
That's great.
49 fastballs, 33 strikes.
It was interesting about Bryce Miller's performance yesterday,
aside from the fact that he pretty evenly split his secondary pitches.
And they were all, you know, really solid pitches at times.
throughout the outing is that his first pitch like strike percentage was in the 50s,
which is not something we usually associate with Mariners starting pitching.
Typically, they're in the 60s and the 70s in that regard.
But we've seen that these offenses, they get into swing mode early because that's how you
attack the Mariners pitchers.
They throw so many strikes early in the count, usually with their fastball, your best shot
to get hits and to do damage off of these guys is to hit the first or second pitch of the
at bat.
So is this Jess Miller, you know, was just being really fine?
Was this an intentional thing that Miller was going to try and do and try and get them to expand early,
knowing that their game plan is to be aggressive early?
Maybe, maybe it was accidental.
I don't really know.
But Miller's command and control yesterday was good enough that it felt to me to be a little bit more intentional than anything else.
So we'll see maybe this is something that the rest of the rotation is going to try and do as well,
expand the zone early knowing that other teams are going to be aggressive against them.
But it was still a lot of first pitch fastball.
So it might just have been, you know, just the way it was.
Like it might not have been intentional.
But Bryce was pretty darn good last night.
And, you know, it's nice to see because this team, this pitching staff in particular,
this rotation is due for a nice run through the rotation where everybody kind of does their job
because it's been a couple weeks since we've seen that.
Yeah, for sure, for sure.
I mean, they ran into a couple of really tough offense.
over that, you know, over the most recent stretch.
I mean, the national...
The nationals are also kind of on a heater right now.
I don't know if you saw what they did in Atlanta last night, but yeah.
Also, you know, real quick, shout out to Gabe Spire.
Solid inning.
Made a couple of mistakes.
Got away with them, but overall really, like, just from a confidence standpoint,
Gabe Spire could really, could have really used that, that inning.
Yeah, so that was huge.
Yeah, he had a 60% whiff rate on his fastball last night.
Yeah. So we got game two coming your way tonight. Hunter Brown versus Luis Castillo. We'll get you set for that in just a moment. But first a reminder of this episode of the Lockdown errors podcast is brought to you by Game Time. Once again, you can catch a game two between the M's and the Astros tonight on the
Marriss Hometown Broadcast with Sirius XM via the SXM app.
All you have to do to find that is search the word errors.
And that's what we're going to be talking about right now here on the Lockdown Merris
podcast.
Game two, Hunter Brown versus Luis Castillo.
Thoughts, Colby.
Should have an opportunity to score some runs tonight.
Not like that ever matters.
So didn't they jump on Hunter Brown last time?
They did.
And they have a few times.
So certainly is, you know, again, good chance.
But with this offense, there's no odds you can give me that I'm going to take that they're going to follow through or, you know, take advantage of that opportunity that they're going to have.
So on paper, the pitching matchup absolutely favors you.
That's usually the case anyways.
So not really any groundbreaking news there.
But, yeah, Hunter Brown.
You know, very high prospect.
Certainly has some decent stuff, but a 12% walk rate right now,
21.8% K rate.
So misses bats at about an average pace.
He walks more guys than the average pitcher.
You know, the quality of contact is pretty good,
which is interesting because he doesn't actually give up a ton of hard hip.
Like his hard hit percentage is fine.
But it's fastball cutter,
slider and split change.
So yeah, his barrel percentage is quite good as well.
So, you know, this could be a case where he's on the corners and the mirrors can't
work his pitch count and you can get deep.
That's certainly a possibility like it is with every pitcher.
But in theory, this is a pretty good matchup for the mirrors.
This isn't an insane spin guy.
This isn't a guy who's, you know, known to just pound the strike zone or anything like that.
it's a pretty good chance for the for the marriage to score some runs here and then for louise you just hope that he continues to do what he's what he's done his last you know pretty much what four or five turns through the rotation maybe six turns through the rotation it's been really solid he's back on track uh but the last two outings he really has kind of had to grind through the lineup not a lot of strikeouts not a lot of wiffs anything like that not you know 55 control and command not that he normally has it but it's been a lot of 45 and he's trying to survive
and he's being very intentional with how he pitches to guys.
And Houston's lineup does have that, you know,
threaten it, the top three in particular are guys that you really have to kind of pitch around
and you have to be very precise with your pitches.
So we'll see if Cassio is really aggressive in the zone tonight,
or if he's kind of nibbling.
Like he has the last few starts out.
I don't know if the nibbling is specifically because it was the Yankees and the Orioles
or if it's just, you know, he's kind of trying to find the right.
right release point or something like that.
So we'll see, you know, how, how he attacks this Astros lineup.
But in theory, the Mariners have the advantage on the pitching front like they do pretty much
every night.
But Castillo's been pretty good his last two times out, but not like dominant Castillo.
But he's been able to manage a couple of really good lineups.
Right.
He looks like a guy who is, you know, working through stuff right now a little bit.
I just don't know if that's because specifically the opponent that he was facing.
Sure.
Or if it was, you know, just maybe something mechanical that he's trying to...
Probably a combination.
Yeah, it might be.
Because the velocity was good.
The stuff overall was pretty good.
He was just very, very fine with it in those two outings.
And as a result, the strikeouts weren't really there.
The walks were a little bit higher than you would like.
But overall, Castillo's been very good.
So is there a possibility that, like, you know, kind of the if,
command and control and kind of the nibbling that he's been doing this is there a possibility that
comes back to bite him tonight uh yeah absolutely but uh you know we'll have to wait and see how
how he uh how he looks how he manages it but the weird thing about castillo though is that like a lot
of times like when logan gilbert doesn't have it on that day we pretty much know like right away
very rarely does gilbert not have it and then find it uh castillo will have it and then he'll lose it you know
randomly throughout games.
So, you know, we'll see.
I'd like to say, you know, hey, we'll have a good idea after the first inning.
Probably not.
That's just, you know, Luis's mechanics aren't the most sound in the world.
And he's definitely prone to losing his release point, particularly when he goes from
pitching from the wind up to the stretch, you know, how that's been an issue for him.
So in theory, you like the Mariners odds to, you know, secure the split tonight.
But it's baseball.
It's, you know, the Mariners.
it's you know the mariner's versus the astros it's chaos and like it is the perfect environment for chaos
to rain tonight so we'll see hopefully the mariners can have multiple innings like the first inning
yesterday and they can kind of cruise to a victory because it would be nice not to have to use and
andrew smoothios tonight who's pitched you know two days in a row uh yeah and hasn't thrown a ton of
pitches so he should be available tonight but you know it'd be nice if you're up six to two in the
ninth and you could just hand the ball to sauce or something like that it is a different
feeling Astros team, though, I would say.
Like this particular ball club in general, like I don't, I don't, and I felt this way for the
most part last year as well. And obviously the mayors handled them very well in the,
and the regular season outside of that last series. I just, I don't feel scared of them.
Like, they don't feel like this insurmountable juggernaut that I have to overcome.
Like you're still like a year or two away from actually being able to seriously challenge their
roster. Yeah, like, like, I feel like we're like,
The Marrers are on the same, they're on the same level, if not on a, on a tier higher than they are at this point.
Right.
I mean, Tucker and Yorda, Tucker, Altuve and Yordon, creates such a huge gap.
Right.
But I feel like the Mariners more than make up that gap on the back end of their roster.
The Mariners are a significantly more balanced ball club right now than the Astros.
I feel like the Mariners like six through 26 is significantly better or that's a significantly bigger gap than like the Astros.
the Astros Gap and their 1, 2, 3 and R1, 2, 3.
Best players was.
Yeah.
You know, they're still a dangerous team, certainly.
And I still, like, I pretty much refuse to believe they're actually dead until they are.
Oh, yeah.
But I'll tell you what, if you can win the next three, you're starting to dig the grave.
I don't think you pushed them in.
I would, I would say, though, like actually watching them up close, watching them play, though,
I can start to wrap my head around why their record is what it is right now.
Yeah.
They have a lot of issues.
Yeah, they're just kind of missing it.
Yeah.
Right now, the bullpen's starting to pitch better.
The offense is still scoring a lot of runs.
So they're still a dangerous club.
But, you know, I do think Seattle's better on paper.
And winning the first game is big because like we talked about in the Yankee series,
you just have to win one of the next three.
And Houston's leaving, you know, leaving your ballpark, having gained no ground on you whatsoever.
So, you know, obviously you want to win this series, certainly.
I mean, for no other reason, it's the Astros.
Of course, you want to win the series.
But splitting a four-game series is always the goal just because it is extremely difficult
to beat a team three times in four days, particularly a division rival, who knows you very well.
And it's starting to play better baseball.
We should also acknowledge that while the Astros record is not very good, they have won
something like 11 of their last 18.
I think it was like 12 or maybe it was 12 with their last 17
and during last night, something like that.
So they were playing better baseball recently.
So they're still a threat.
They're still dangerous to you.
But I think you're the better team right now.
And if you can go out there and you can at least get a split,
that's great.
If you win three out of four,
that is a two game swing in the standings.
And also something to keep in mind here because we talked about this last year.
And nobody really wanted to talk about it last year
until we were forced to talk about it last year,
but tiebreakers are a thing, right?
So head-to-head record does matter.
So you won two or three,
right now you're up three-one on them.
You only play them 13 times.
So if you can get to seven,
if you come down to the end of the year
and it's you or Houston for a playoff spot,
you're going to get in.
So winning games against the Astros is doubly important.
And nobody wanted to talk about it last year
until the last week when all of a sudden it's like,
oh, well, Texas has the tiebreaker on us.
We have the tiebreaker on Houston.
Houston has a tiebreaker on Texas
and we're kind of trying to figure this all out.
Keep that in mind when we play Texas,
when you play Houston,
tiebreakers could come into play.
They almost did last year.
So winning games against Houston,
obviously very valuable,
but in more ways than just one.
Especially with how mid this division has been this year.
You never know.
It seems like these three teams will probably somehow,
some way,
even if it doesn't feel like it should,
end up being right next to one another
when it's all set and done.
Yeah. So, I mean, if you could sweep Houston, they'd be Devin back, I think.
Seven and a half back, I think.
And then you would be up six to one in the season series, meaning you only need one more win against them the rest of the way to secure the tiebreaker, which is, I don't want to say like it's the priority because obviously you want to win more than one more game against Houston. Because if you go six and one against Houston and then in the next six, you go 0 and 6.
like that's a bigger problem
than it is a good thing to win the tiebreaker.
You know what I mean?
Sure, sure, sure.
Yeah.
But again,
my goal always with every four game series,
home or away,
particularly away,
but home or away,
if you can split a four game series,
that's a good series.
Yeah.
And the mayor is looking for their 30th win tonight as well.
So they could be a third of the way through
to a 90-win season.
That would be nice.
We love a nice round number.
So hopefully they can get that tonight.
and then we'll catch you tomorrow.
We'll recap tonight's game and get you set for game three.
And then on Thursday, we'll have a postgame show for you.
But that's going to do it for us for now.
