So there's obviously a lot of questions right now about what exactly is going on with Bryce Miller and the rest of the Smyra's rotation. So to help us answer some of those questions is Ryan Roland Smith, who joins us now on the Locked Marrace podcast. Making his first ever locked on Mariner's appearance is former Mariners pitcher, now Mariner's broadcaster, MLB network analyst, host of the Top Step podcast and founder of next gen baseball. Ryan Rowland Smith, welcome, my friend. I appreciate it. What an intro. I love it. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:01:24 And by the way, too, I will say I do listen to you guys, especially when I go to get caught up if I've missed a couple games or I haven't worked in a few games. I'll jump on and listen to you guys. I love show so thanks for having me i really appreciate that glad we can finally get you on the show so you know let's just hop right into it uh you're joining us in the midst of a four game losing streak for the merrars uh i know for fans you know it's hard to see this after the nine series win streak and you know not think about moments last year like the one and eight road trip and and the blown 10 game lead um this is obviously you know a relatively unchanged roster from last year so for those guys in the clubhouse that experienced a lot of that last year.
Starting point is 00:02:04 How do you keep those thoughts from not creeping into your mind, especially when you've got tough teams like the Yankees and the Padres on your schedule? Yeah, you know, it's a great point because, you know, when you talk to, when you have that first little conversation with players and you talk about, hey, well, you know, last year the strikeout numbers and straight away, they're just trying to dismiss it. But you know, once you get a little deeper into it and you start having a conversation. And I've been there too, and this is pre, you know,
Starting point is 00:02:31 on Mariners and all these podcasts and social media and all the straight in your face, you know, reaction that fans have. I mean, this is, like I said, pretty social media. And we still felt it where you know how people feel about it. And you still have that residual effect from the last year. So you get a little bit of that. I think you're coming off such a nice little streak. And it was really nice for us and, you know, as fans and everyone around the team.
Starting point is 00:03:00 because it was built on offense. And you start to sort of turn the blind eye to the pitching. And I did that too. And I think what kind of exposed in these last four games is some of the issues that have on the pitching side in this team, I still say this all the time. If they are going to get to the playoffs in October, that foundation,
Starting point is 00:03:19 and this goes for a lot of teams, but some teams don't need that. I mean, the Texas Rangers didn't need that a couple years ago, but they're going to have to have one through five really elite pitching. And they just don't have that right now. So I think that these last four games kind of, regardless of, you know, trying to turn the page on last year offense, this year all of a sudden it's like, hey, look, we're, you know, we're beating teams on it with offense this year.
Starting point is 00:03:43 We haven't, the pitching's okay. It's hanging in there, but they're going to get healthy quick. And, you know, there's a few concerns there. Bryce Miller being one, a big concern, that's for sure. Well, I want to ask you about him. So, you know, he just hasn't been the guy that we know and love this year. just had statistically his worst start of the year on Sunday. And once again said that he was dealing with something there around the third and fourth inning.
Starting point is 00:04:09 You know, he's already dealt with arm fatigue and backstiffness this year. But the Mariners seem to think he can pitch through it. I mean, you know, they've historically been incredibly cautious with their pitchers. We get asked a lot about, you know, what the Mariners are doing with him, why they may not be putting him on the IEL. maybe it's related to the fact that Logan Gilbert and George Kirby are already on the IL. But again, they've been so historically cautious with their pitchers that I don't think that they would just, you know, run Bryce into the ground. I agree.
Starting point is 00:04:39 Yeah. Just because, you know, they don't have a ton of depth right now. But, you know, watching Bryce, it's hard to tell what exactly is going on. If he's pitching hurt or if he's just, you know, compensating for something kind of feeling off. and maybe that's throwing his mechanics out of whack, and as a result, he's lost some confidence. I don't know,
Starting point is 00:04:59 but, you know, I'm curious what you think is going on with him and what you would do with him at this point. Yeah, I think, man, and I thought about this a little bit this morning,
Starting point is 00:05:08 especially after last night, because getting to a situation where George Kirby's coming back and someone has to, yeah, someone has to leave the rotation. And I was thinking, like Logan Evans,
Starting point is 00:05:18 Emerson Hancock, which one of these guys, they're kind of, they're, you know, both battling that spot. But then I was thinking this morning, hang on a man,
Starting point is 00:05:24 minute like you still got Bryce Miller on that list and just to answer your question in regards to if he's trying to pitch through something or if the mariner's you know should be more cautious with him from an injury standpoint I don't think there's a major injury issue when I listen to him speak and he's being a little bit trying to it's like he's trying to express himself without saying too much what I hear went from him is it's either two things number one where in 2024 for the most part, he could have, you know, a stiff back or feel fatigue, but hey, you know what, I can just blow through six innings and I'm okay and then just pick it up and you have the old adage of hearing this from veteran pitches, oh, you're not going to feel great. Just keep going
Starting point is 00:06:07 and I'm good because my stuff's good and at plays. Or it's something, you know, timing, sequencing mechanically that's off and you just can't get over that hump where he had that last year and, you know, you always have that. Like you're never going to feel perfect, especially mechanically. never going to feel dialed in. But you just somehow get through it. And there I am again. I'm pitching the seventh inning. Well, this year, man, it has been a slog.
Starting point is 00:06:31 And he talked about third, fourth inning, where mentally you're just so exhausted. And you're in a situation where you try in so many different things, you're trying to be perfect, where the little things that you're dealing with, you just can't push through them. And so I think it's more of that, to be honest with you. I don't see the Mariners being in a situation
Starting point is 00:06:52 where if he's like, you know, run into the training room after an outing and just trying to, you know, recover right away or he's trying to pitch through some, you know, elbow that's killing him on shoulder. I don't think that's the case. There's no way they would do that. Absolutely no way. I just don't think that would do that. Because, you know, look, regardless of who that, even if they got, you know, Neville nobody down in AAA, they're still going to fill that spot and take Bryce out of the rotation because they're, you know, trying to look after him long term. So I just think it's more of him. He's in his head.
Starting point is 00:07:22 I was trying to say that during the game without, you know, throwing him under the bus. But I just think he's so in his head right now because remember, too, man, like I dealt with this as well. I remember I had a good year. I came back from an injury in 2009 pitch and I was doing really well. You expect, and then you're going to 2010. It was one of these things where people talk to you in a different way.
Starting point is 00:07:42 Like you get to spring training. I was still trying to figure it out. Like I was still trying to be an established major league player. I got way too comfortable. I was in spring training and I'm like, I got this figured out. And now I go into the season, I'm like, I want to get 200 innings. I've got to these lofty goals. And the expectations of me had changed drastically.
Starting point is 00:07:59 Like the team's kind of leaning on me to pitch well in that rotation in order for them to have success. And so I think with Bryce, he's kind of coming to this situation where it's like, oh, man, hey, look, I'm approaching arbitration. I had a really good breakout year last year. And now I'm a dude. And he was a dude last year. Don't get me wrong. But now I'm a dude, part of this elite rotation. And then all of a sudden he gets, you know, hit, that fastball gets hit.
Starting point is 00:08:25 His velocity's down a little bit or that curveball he keeps trying to throw with two strikes. He just can't land that pitch. And lo and behold, here he is. You can't get through five innings. And now his heads, his wheels are starting to spin. So I think it's more of that, to be honest with that. I think he's really in his head right now, just trying to navigate his way, you know, through this where he just doesn't feel right.
Starting point is 00:08:45 He's doubting himself. Second-guess himself when he's in good counts. And they're going to make a decision. I'll be honest with you. For me in 2010, go look it up. I mean, derailed my career. And looking back at that, not saying, hey, like, you know, give me a breather. But I just kept going out every fifth day in pitching.
Starting point is 00:09:02 I was like, you guys need to put me on a fandom IL or DFA me or something because this is not going well. Not saying they need to do that with Bryce, but they're going to figure out something quick and get him right because he can be, I mean, look, he's miles ahead of me talent-wise. Don't get me wrong. and but you don't want a situation where he keeps lingering out there and then you know it just it just spirals out of control they're going to get him right they really do and if that means i don't even know you might be able if he's if he's got options he should have options still right i mean sure yeah yeah you know what maybe hey if if you option him down for a couple starts and um let him figure some stuff out take a breath and that might be the best thing for him yeah you know for us on the
Starting point is 00:09:44 outside you know we just kind of work with the the information that we have so at first you know, you just hear about the arm fatigue and it's like, okay, maybe it's something similar to what Brian Wu was going through last year. He just kind of has to pitch through it and hopefully it doesn't worsen. But then, you know, over the last. Like, even that, like, he could have had that last year where it's like, oh, my arm's probably get fatigued, but, you know, I'm really good and I'm really confident and I got such conviction. I can just blow through it. So it could totally could be that. And if that's the case too, you know, what, hey, give him a breather as well. But yeah. But yeah, so, you know, but over the last few starts,
Starting point is 00:10:18 the more that I've watched him, I'm like, okay, he's, he's not in a good headspace right now. And so, and so yesterday, uh,
Starting point is 00:10:25 you know, we got, we do our mailbag episode and, and Colby and I got asked about just, what do you do with him? And for me, I think you need to give him some sort of mental, maybe physical reset here.
Starting point is 00:10:37 Uh, you have the off day coming up, uh, after the game, uh, tomorrow against the Yankees. Maybe you skip his start at the very least. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:45 Do something like that. Yeah. I, I, again, with that, it wouldn't be the worst thing. Remember, it's still only made too. Like, as much as you're Bryce Miller, you don't want that, man. You feel like an absolute value. You really do. Like, you know, I'm not saying he is, but that's kind of how you feel. No one else thinks you are. They want it. They're trying to help you. But you just feel like,
Starting point is 00:11:05 oh, man. And so with that, you have to have some sort of production out of skipping a start or, or whether it's a fan or if it's an optioning him down or something. There's got to be something where out of that, have to tell him, hey, listen, this is for your best interest, long term, whatever, because otherwise, man, you can get in your head big time. You feel like an absolute failure, that's for sure. Starting point is 00:12:44 Brian Wu taking the bump for the Marys tonight going up against Max Fried, who's been incredible so far. Wu's been the stabilizer, though, in this rotation throughout all these injuries and struggles, hyphen. And there is no pitcher. I have more fun watching in this rotation than Brian Wu. So I want to ask you, what is the most satisfying pitch to watching this staff?
Starting point is 00:13:09 Because for me, it's when Wu front doors that two, same or to lefties. Okay. Yeah, that's a good one for sure. I remember two a couple years ago, they were like there was it was actually a start against the yankees in new york where he couldn't get lefties out this is not last year year prior and i remember there was all this talk about i mean i was guilty of it too's like man he has to find another secondary pitch he can't go um i don't
Starting point is 00:13:34 think he was throwing too many sinkers back then um especially that little front door on that hip but um i remember i was like man he's gonna develop a change up all these other guys are getting these splits and he was very stubborn about it which again to his credit man he's He's so stubborn, even when he pitches in the strike zone. But, you know, and now he's cruising against lefties. He didn't really, he throws that change up, but not like it's some big plus pitch all of a sudden, you know, a year or so later. I think for me, with Brian Wu, for him personally, I'll go to another pitch in a second,
Starting point is 00:14:07 and I'm kind of sad that he never throws. He doesn't throw it that much, and he kind of explained to me why I didn't. But I think for him, when I just, when he, look, the, okay, match up against, Yankees. They punish fastballs and they can get to pitches up in top of the strike zone. It's going to be an interesting matchup to see if Brian Wu stays stubborn with that, you know, we know about the fastball, the effect it has, you know, the upshot on top of the strike zone. If he can stay like a Trent Grisham, for example, throw a fastball, get a foul ball and then zoom, back it up and throw the same pitch. You know, and look,
Starting point is 00:14:40 I'm all for the, that little sinker as well. Don't get me wrong. Yeah. I love it when he, he's such he's so dominant when he just stays so so stubborn in the strikes and even do that against the athletics man i don't think he pitched that bad he had a couple instances where it got away and guys just like got on the swing against him early but i just think that i just love that when he just stays in the same spots like here it is hit it that's awesome but the pitch of this rotation and and i've so i've asked him about why he kind of stopped throwing it but louise castile and he's change up remember when he came over to the mariners that's all we talked about was like you know he had that really good changeup.
Starting point is 00:15:17 Colby and I talk about it all the time. Yeah. Oh, yeah. All the time. Yeah. It's, and yeah,
Starting point is 00:15:23 he talked about he learned it from Pedro. I helped him out with him and all this. I asked him, because he started throwing a couple, a little bit more, I think first or second start. And I actually asked him, he said,
Starting point is 00:15:32 hey man, like, what happened to the change up? And he said, oh, my arm angle, because my arm angle, he's very conscious of his arm angle. He said when he gets to a spot where it gets too high, and then he gets on the side of the ball,
Starting point is 00:15:43 he watches. the pitch early in games, stay horizontal. And he says, after they, I just shut it down. You say, if you notice, there's been a couple times where he's tried to get that pitch early. And then if it stays on playing too much, he's just in his head. He's like, I'm not ready to throw that pitch in leverage counts. And I was like, oh, man, come on.
Starting point is 00:16:01 Like, to me, man, when that change up with that sinker, I mean, going back to even that Blue Jet, the playoff out of the out of the, outing against the Blue Jays, where he's pumping fastballs at the top of strikes. changeups. It's filthy. I wish you'd find that pitch again. I wish he was confident with it or whatever it is, man. I don't know what it is. If it's just in his head or if he just, if it's not the same pitch or whatever. I know his armengue's kind of shifted a little bit, but that's the, that's the pitch for me. The Castia change up that we don't see anymore, the good one. Yeah, yeah, Colby and I talk about it. We were like, man, if you could get back to that pitch, maybe that's kind of the answer here
Starting point is 00:16:38 to kind of fight back against, you know, some of this regression that we're seeing from Luis right now. So we'll see if maybe he makes the adjustment Overall, what have you thought about Luis? Because, you know, I see You know, a lot of fans that just think he's cooked now watching him. And I think that like he's clearly obviously regressed. You know, the Velo's ticked down a bit. The stuff has just overall looked a bit worse.
Starting point is 00:17:07 But I do feel like some of the reaction to Luis, you know, this year has been a bit of an overreaction. And so where do you stand on where Luis is right now? Yeah, I feel like he kind of went through this a little bit at this time. Last year, I got to go back and look. I think it was last year of the year prior, he's like, oh, I feel like I just hit rock bottom. I think they're playing the Marlins.
Starting point is 00:17:29 I was like, man, God, like the way he's talking, what's going on? And then all of a sudden you kind of had this surge where swing and miss went straight back up. Because he has, he's lost that swing and miss, ton of contact in the strike zone. he has with all these pitches has stayed on playing doesn't have the same depth even that slider too he gets so slider heavy to righties and lefties and it's like i said if it doesn't if it doesn't have that depth on it then it just stays on playing and it's either foul balls or it's balls putting in play against him um i i still feel like with louise there's not a big as okay like i'll
Starting point is 00:18:05 compare him to say like a felix decline late in his career right that was a drastic stuff decline and for someone who all of a sudden he went away from fastballs and he just tried to mix in four different pitches for strikes it just wasn't the same like dominance like oh okay i'm going to throw a fastball here swinging mess i might just stay with this pitch if i want to for him he was just searching he's like okay you're hitting this pitch i'm going to plan b now i'm going to plan c i'm talking about felix obviously i don't see that with louise castillo as much because not that i'm comparing the two at all. But just in regards to decline, I don't see, I think it's a bit of an overreaction with the decline with, with, with, with Louise Castia. I'm telling, he has to find that
Starting point is 00:18:48 change up again, though. He just does. Yeah. If, if you are going to stay, um, middle of the plate, and you are going to go slider heavy, um, you got to find that, he has to find that change up. If you're not going to go swing and miss at the top of the strike zone and he hasn't been able to get to the top of the strikes now i just again man i when i see sliders and a foul ball again and again i'm trust me i'm on the broadcast i'm like oh man like really that's your best option right there in i can't say it um i'm not going to say you know out out loud out loud or you know because he want to be like ripping on him uh because louis castor he's a stud um i don't see as big a decline i i feel like there's going to be a surge here once he gets uh some swing and miss he can get to
Starting point is 00:19:29 the top of the strike zone but i think he needs that change up back i'm i'm i'm staying hard on that one for sure. Yeah, agreed. Agreed. So when I get guys on here, like our mutual friend, Aaron Goldsmith, terrible voice, even worse hair, and Gary Hill, you know, I wanted, I usually ask them some of them about like the industry. And I'm really curious for you as a former player who got into the industry covering baseball talking ball, both on a macro level, right, with like MLB network and then covering a specific team. Yeah. You know, I consume content of all sports.
Starting point is 00:20:12 I think about the NBA with what I'm about to ask you here. There's a big conversation going on in the NBA about how former players talk about the current slate of players. For you, how do you feel the game is being talked about right now? Do you think it's being talked about well? and for you specifically as a former player, what is your kind of philosophy when talking about the game,
Starting point is 00:20:38 talking about the players of today? Yeah, well, first of all, just in regards to the industry for me, I know a lot of your viewers and listeners, there's no bronze statue of me at the back of the frigging stadium. So I can't get on air. I can't afford to get on air.
Starting point is 00:20:55 And sometimes my voice might drive people crazy or what I have to say drives people crazy, whatever. I can't afford to get on it. air and just started saying, oh yeah, back when I played, I like to do that because you like to be relatable to the player, of course. But you have to up your game. Like, I had to bug people to get a, chance to talk baseball. And I think to your question, like, like really, literally to say, hey, I will fly up for free and get on air, please. Like, that's how it was. No one was calling me.
Starting point is 00:21:24 Like, I've told kids this, man, who I have my baseball camps. No one was calling me. So, oh, we need you on air. No, no, it was an afterthought. I had, I had to push. And now that, and you really have to up your game too, because you can't get on and just think you're speaking the gospel because, you know what? You've got, you know, locked on Mariners. You've got someone else on social media.
Starting point is 00:21:46 You've got this, this other group talking about this and that. Everyone's so knowledgeable and everyone has access. People have access to players more so now and understand players more so now who didn't play. And also, too, like, you know, you know, you. You go whether it's for free for baseball, Savon, or all these services out there where you can really dive into players. So, and players are more transparent now too. So you have to up your game.
Starting point is 00:22:11 So, like, in regards to, like, me talking about the current player, I have to learn and speak the language of how these guys speak. Like Pete Woodworth, I lean on him heavily because he's overseeing five, you know, starting pitches and the bullpen and guys who are in their mid-20s, late 20s. So I have to speak that language. Otherwise, because again, I can't afford me. Ken Griffey Jr., he can, right? Because he's Griffey and people just want to hear him speak.
Starting point is 00:22:39 And because he's amazing. He's an amazing, fascinating career. I want to hear what he has to say too. But I think that you, if you look at it too much as it to say, oh, well, the game now is blah, blah, blah. The game, yes, the game's changed. Everyone's super athletic. And there's so much information out there that you have to keep up with it.
Starting point is 00:22:59 That's why I go to drive line in the winter just to learn. I just go there to learn. And I'll watch. And like when a couple of years ago, when Matt Brash was throwing bullpens, I was down there. I'm like, I need to drive 45 minutes down there to watch because I need to keep up with what's going on.
Starting point is 00:23:13 Otherwise, if I don't, me, like personally, I can't afford to get on and call a game because I'm, yeah, I had a sub-part career. So that's really,
Starting point is 00:23:23 really important. And again, I can't speak for someone who had a 20-year Hall of Fame career because it's different for them. They're in a different place. the way they talk and that's why you know and again i that the the landscapes change so much too as you know i mean look look at independent media like yourself like you know with locked on and and these other ones there's so much good stuff out there now that the competition is is so high that
Starting point is 00:23:46 you have to be on your game that's that's for sure so you i'm big on you really have to keep up and speak the language and and you know with the role with the tide of what the players are doing these days whether you like it or not you know whether you think it's good or bad like something and said, oh, no one pitches inside. If Aaron Judge was doing this, I'd throw up and in. Well, that's great, but that's not the game right now. So I'm not going to sit and go, oh, you need to throw them up and in back in my day. No one wants to hear that.
Starting point is 00:24:09 Like, that's not how games played right now. That might be good, who knows, but it could be a, it may not be a good tactic. You know what I mean? So, yeah. Right, yeah. What, and I'm sure you've talked about this, but what made you want to get into this after your playing career? What, and really specifically, like, commit to it fully as well.
Starting point is 00:24:29 not just like I'm going to do some appearances on MLB network or on the Marys broadcast whatever like I'm going to I'm going to be fully a member of the broadcast I'm going to do MLB network I'm going to host a podcast like I'm I'm just going to go fully into this what made you want to do that because I I kind of treat it the same as my playing career so I you know and not to see here and open the yearbook up again but you know when I signed the 30 grand came over was not throwing hard and I looked around as like man I if I am not going to survive here there is no way I'm going to I don't want to be this dude.
Starting point is 00:25:01 Like a lot of these Australians were coming over two years of pro ball and then they're right back there. Oh, they have a visa for me. I'm like, I don't want to be one of those dudes, right? So I treat it the same as my playing career where I cannot rock up and think that I'm just going to get on air, put the headset on, talk and someone's going to go, wow, that was amazing. I have to say, okay, how can I just maximize this chance? And you know what? It could be gone in a year. And I treat that the same as when I was at my playing days.
Starting point is 00:25:28 MLB Network may not call me back for next year. So I'm just going to go all in. And I said this earlier. And anyone who wants to get into this industry, right, same as you guys. You guys grind it out. It's not like you just jump on and talk a bunch of sports and see you later or whatever. No, no, you've got to work your ass off.
Starting point is 00:25:47 You do. And so I say this all the time. I had to fly up for free. See Jen Nikkowski's with the Braves now. I said, dude, you've got to go do stuff for free. And you have to do everything. You have to be a Swiss army off. Do radio, do TV.
Starting point is 00:25:58 all that stuff. So with all that being said, and I try and tell people that I get so many calls, man, from people like, oh, how do you get that job? Yeah, because I had a better career than you. Well, because I'm willing to fly five hours to New Jersey for three days and get up at 6 a.m. And jump on a show for 20 minutes and then do another show at night. Like, I'm willing to do that. I'm willing to bug the crap out of the boss over there to put me on. If you're not willing to do that, then it's not going to work out. And I, again, treat it like a baseball career, man. love this game so much. I love talking about it. I love, you know, jumping on shows like this. And I love jumping on the game as the game's going on. And I'm, I never take anything for granted.
Starting point is 00:26:39 Like, I'm super grateful. I'm very, very friggin lucky. And so I never want to take that for granted. So I just try and do as much as I possibly can until someone says, like, we've got someone else because that's what happens. You get replaced. So I'm just trying to cram it all in as much as I can. If MLB Network's willing to take me on. And again, I had to bug them to get. get a gig over there too. I had to hustle that. If they're willing to put me on, and I do a good job and I feel like I'm auditioning every single time I get on air, same as when I do a matter. So I just don't take it for granted. And so that's, again, I'm not trying to give life advice here to anyone, but I talk to as teenagers all the
Starting point is 00:27:14 time and they just wait, sit back and wait for someone to call them to make it, like for a, get on a team. It doesn't work that way. So yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Love that mentality. Before I let you go, tell me what you got going on. one next gen right now. Yeah. So we've got, I've got five, well, I've got five summer camps going on starting at the end of June, June 29th. I've got a new one in Renton. So we've got Renton. We've got the Everett Aquasox, Tacoma Rainiers, Seattle, Edmonds. What am I missing here? Bellevue. So I do have six, but five right now. I'm waiting for a six right now. But we also have a Brian Woo
Starting point is 00:27:50 camp. Brian is going to do a camp with me, which I'm stoked. It's a one day thing. I can only getting for one day. And so if you, you know, for kids, all my summer camps from six to 12. Yeah, man, we have a blast. I'm out there every day. Every hour. It's not like, it's not like I just show up and go, hey, you go and just hand you off to a bunch of, you know, intern. Now, I'm there every day. We have, you know, we have a blast, man. So they're Monday to Friday. But yeah, all summer long, next gen baseball. Yeah. So I'm doing that. I've got my show, the top step where it's on root sports, but also have it on YouTube as well. So even if you have root sports you can watch it had mike cameron last week i've got who've got this week um oh
Starting point is 00:28:27 brad adams helped me out this week he's got a golf show on root sports oh yeah i saw that on your instagram yeah yeah adam ray's jumping on um but yeah no i enjoy that i i really do um i i enjoy having a chance to yeah to have a show and and do it away from the game so it's um away from the broadcast so yeah lot going on but busy summer but i love it awesome awesome i'll be sure to leave all the information about the camps down in the description. So if you guys want to check that out, just check out the description. Ryan, thanks so much for hopping on. Really appreciate it.
