They dropped two or three in the series to a club that, of course, just traded arguably its best hitter
Starting point is 00:01:05 and is also missing two of its other key hitters due to injury. But that didn't matter at all for the Red Sox because the Bears just couldn't score outside of last night. I actually felt kind of optimistic about this game after the first couple of innings, though, because it seemed like it was heading in a fairly similar direction to the last couple of times that they had seen Garrett Crochet.
Starting point is 00:01:29 They got a couple big doubles off of him. it seemed like they were frustrating him a bit in the second inning. He throws the wild pitch that scores what winds up to be the mayor's lone run in this game. They ran the pitch count up to 40. And then the mayor's offense disappeared from that point forward pretty much. And look, that's, you know, to be expected, you're facing one of the best pitchers in baseball. We'll talk about Luis Castillo's day and how important it was for him to be as close to perfect as possible in the next segment. but yeah, you know, it's just another struggle of a day for the mayor's offense.
Starting point is 00:02:04 It's another instance of, you know, the extreme highs and the extreme lows that we're seeing from this ball club and from this offense in particular. Like I said in the cold open, you know, they get shut out on Monday. They score eight last night and they only score one today. Just like, who are they? They actually did from a statistical standpoint outperform the Red Sox offense, except for, you know, the most. important category of the scoreboard right but they had twice as many hits as the red socks they had a higher hard hit percentage just that two of the red sox three hits today went over the wall including a two run home run from trevor story which was the uh the difference in this game so yeah uh colby how you feeling
Starting point is 00:02:46 coming out of this one yep yep and that's going to do it for our show thank you so much for joining us here on the lockdown airs podcast yeah um different day same stuff etc. It's what makes today really frustrating is that you know getting your doors blown off
Starting point is 00:03:10 by Garrett Crochet is not anything that would cause most teams to create this much animosity but you know it's just sitting there watching today's game
Starting point is 00:03:23 and you look at it and you say like well just imagine how good you'd be feeling right now if your three best hitters didn't completely you know, wet themselves against one of the worst starting pitchers in the American League two days ago.
Starting point is 00:03:37 You probably have a series win and we wouldn't be talking about today's game at all. We'd be talking about the awesome five and one homestand and all that. And nope, nope, they couldn't get it done on Monday. And because this team is that bad, that of course comes back into play in the series finale. Because why wouldn't it? Because this is what a 500 team is, right? Like a bunch of little moments add up and they come in. and they, you know, they have to pay the Piper at the end of it.
Starting point is 00:04:04 And that's why you perpetually around 500. That's what the Mariners are. They are 500 ball club right now. And I'm sure we'll talk about this tomorrow, unless we have a, you know, a late guest added to the schedule. The next 23 games are incredibly important to this Mariner team, incredibly. They will determine the entire season. We'll talk about that tomorrow. But, yeah, I really didn't have much confidence in this team.
Starting point is 00:04:28 in general. And then I saw the lineup today. I get wanting to give JP a day off. And if you're going to give him a day off, benching him against crochet is fine, even though JP's better against lefties than he is righties. Just a goofy, goofy line. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:47 A little more leading off. With the way that he's been hitting lately, what are we doing? Dylan Moore had, I think, the worst like 20 at-bat stretch I've ever seen. like ever from anybody and i watched the mid 2010 mariners offense every day i'm sure you've seen a worst one but sure yes i don't think so i think he went oh for 20 with like 13 14 strikeouts and a couple pop-ups like it was awful that's your lead off hitter in a rubber match what with a day off
Starting point is 00:05:24 tomorrow well and then you know and it comes back to hurt you there in that second inning right of course it does and you're just I just I it felt weird like I I don't again like if you if you really want to give JP the day off fine I don't think you should you have tomorrow off he's a shortstop he's not a catcher you know and maybe he had a back thing today or whatever I don't know who knows right this is insane Dylan Moore hasn't had a hit since May 27th well until the one he got today I know but like yeah leading up to today he hasn't had a June 18th and what's crazy about that is is that like he only has like 20 he only had like 24 plate appearances between those two so he's barely playing because obviously you can't play this guy right now he sucks so but that's your lead off hitter
Starting point is 00:06:18 that's the guy you're going to give the most at bats to against garret crochet that guy uh yeah i had really no faith they were going to win this game and and that's what makes it you know Monday even more frustrating and we talk about all the time it's it's just those little things that don't seem that important and say oh it's just a one game oh it's just one at bad and we add them all up at the end of the year and guess what the final tally is the mariners needed one more game or one more at bat and they'd be in the playoffs and it's the same story over and over and over again that regardless of who the manager is regardless of who the new cleanup hitter is it's the same story.
Starting point is 00:07:00 Yeah. Repeated over and over again. And when you compound it by doing idiotic things like having Dylan Moore hit leadoff against Garrett Crochet when Dylan Moore is over the last century, like, yeah, it's hard to feel amped about it. I mean, this is a four and two homestown. This is a very good homestand. Any way you want to slice it, very good.
Starting point is 00:07:23 Sure. Yeah. And you still left it on that, you still left wins on the table. You still found a way to leave. wins on the table. It really is shocking that this team is so capable of doing that. And again, like, we're, what, 70 games then now? I don't know the exact number of games. But, you know, we're almost halfway through. You know, on the Mariners next off day, I think they will have played not after tomorrow. On the Mariners next off day after tomorrow, I think they'll have played
Starting point is 00:07:54 exactly 81 games. This is a 500 baseball team. nothing more. It's just so hard to take them seriously. Yeah. Why would you? We're going to talk about Luis Castillo and give you an update on our Feeding America fundraiser. Got a big update on that. Just a moment. I want to give you an update, pretty big update on our Feeding America fundraiser.
Starting point is 00:09:42 You guys stepped up in a big way yesterday and even into today a little bit. We have gotten so many donations between yesterday's episode and today's that I have to go on the second page to read all of these. Daverin came through with $50. John came through with $27 to summon Cal Raleigh's Grand Slam, his 27th home run last night. Patton came through with $20. Bear with me for a moment as I changed pages here. Matthew $25. Ethan, $25 Anonymous, $27.
Starting point is 00:10:18 Brian with $44. Gigi with $50. I believe that's Gigi's second donation unless that's a different Gigi. Brandon with $20 Anonymous with $26 Gary with $100 Anonymous with 10 Josh with 25
Starting point is 00:10:35 Richard with 10 Noman with 10 Jason with 100 Christopher with 10 Aaron with 28 Matthew with 35 Anonymous with 28 Sean with 100
Starting point is 00:10:47 Jake with 27 and Anonymous with $10 Who In an episode that did not do well on the YouTube page. I assume it did roughly what it always does on the audio side of things. Very consistent listener base on the audio side of things. And we appreciate that, guys.
Starting point is 00:11:05 Yes. But yeah, turns out a little guilt is never a bad thing. Now, I could try guilting you guys again, but I think only about 800 of you are going to watch this. So we'll see what you guys can come up with today. But yeah, if you guys don't know and judging by the donations, I think pretty much everybody knows by now.
Starting point is 00:11:29 But we're going to keep on saying this until you donate. We're raising money for feeding America. Every dollar we raise is 10 meals going to somebody or people who are facing food insecurity, meaning they do not know where their next meal is going to come from or, in fact, when they're going to have their next meal. That includes over 50 million Americans, including one out of every five children. And now with school out for the summer, a lot of those kids are losing access to their one guaranteed meal. So, yeah, things are bleak right now in Marinersland. But we can help ease the pain, the real pain, the real life pain of a lot of people out there.
Starting point is 00:12:07 And we have already. I think we're up to $5,600 in some change. That's $56,000 meals that you guys have donated to people who desperately needed. And, you know, kindness comes pretty cheap, especially when you work with feeding a meal. America because again for every dollar we raise they can provide 10 meals to the people who desperately the way they say on their thing at least 10 meals at least 10 yes yeah so yeah it's it's a great organization the link to donate will be down below don't forget guys uh if you can't donate or even if you already have there's also another way to add to our to our charity drive if
Starting point is 00:12:50 you guys subscribe to our YouTube channel. Ty and I donate 10 cents for every new subscriber we get. And we're up, I think, about 150 now, which is, you know, every new subscriber is one meal. So there's 150 meals from people just clicking a button. So it's on days like today, it's nice to have, you know, a lot of donations and to see that tracker go up. Yeah. It feeds the soul as we try to feed stomachs and mouths. It's a good tagline.
Starting point is 00:13:19 reach out feeding America. But yeah, when John Stanton and Jerry Depoto and Dan Wilson and J.P. Crawford and Julio don't feed your soul. Go feed some people. $5,633. That's what we're at right now. So thank you to everyone that has donated so far to everyone who donated over the course of yesterday and to today. Your generosity is greatly, greatly appreciated. All right.
Starting point is 00:13:48 So let's get back into today's game a little bit before we ball this thing up and throw it in the trash. Luis Castillo started. You go six innings, three earn runs, five strikeouts, two walks, the two home runs, the one to Marcela Mayor, and then the two run shot to left center field by Trevor Story, which was the deciding factor in this game. But statistically, a quality start by Luis Castillo. how does you feel about his day? Yeah, I mean, it's pretty much what we've seen from Luis over the last, oh, I don't know, month and a half, minus the one really bad outing in Anaheim.
Starting point is 00:14:31 You know, he gave his team a good shot to win for the most part. He was aggressive in the strike zone. He was efficient with his pitch count, you know, not generating as many whiffs as he had, has in the past, but that's just who Luis is now. he's going to get a lot of ground balls. He's going to be up in the zone with his fastball, try and get his whiffs up there, and then just mixing in a bunch of, you know, four seam, two seam sinker and a slider. And try to mix him that change up.
Starting point is 00:14:59 I thought he was fine today. The only really annoying thing Luis did today is that he had prior to the Trevor Story home run, he had the hitter 1 and 2, 0, 2, and he walked him. And, you know, we're going up against Garrett Crochet. the every every single run counts so the difference between two to one and three to one is massive and the pitch he made to story wasn't even that bad of a pitch it's just you know sometimes a good hitter makes or even a bad hitter makes a good swing on a good pitch and it leaves the yard and so the home run is is one thing but walking the guy in front of story to make it a two run home run to essentially guarantee a loss that is the big that is the big fault of louise today not the two home runs he gave up. But yeah, you know, he's been good this year. We've talked about how important he's been in general to this ball club
Starting point is 00:15:54 and how critical he's been at, you know, eating innings and going deep into games and really picking it up for Logan and Bryce and George. And he did that again today. You know, the Mariners rotation is on a nice little roll now over the last six games or so. Over the homestand, the starting pitching was more than good enough to win all those games. and unfortunately the offense, you know, failed epically, and one of them was against crochet, and that's understandable.
Starting point is 00:16:23 And the other one, inexcusable. So bummer. But I thought Luis looked pretty good today, just not quite good enough. And again, it really is that walking a hitter after your head, 02, is just devastating, especially when you don't have a margin of error, like most Mariners starters don't have when they go out there right now.
Starting point is 00:16:44 Yeah, Carlos Vargas, Gabe Spire, and Edward Bizarro, capped off what was quietly a pretty good home stand for the bullpen as well. You mentioned how good the starting rotation was, but the bullpen as well was really solid. Vargas with a clean inning, he gets a strikeout, Gabe Spire with a clean inning, Bizarro with a clean inning and a strikeout. So nice to see from those guys.
Starting point is 00:17:11 Yeah, it seems like the pitching is kind of fixing. itself. And I think we talked about this on yesterday's episode or maybe we talked about it on CTZ, whatever. But you're at the point now where you have your five best guys in your rotation with the way that, you know, Bryce has struggled through his injury and all that. Like Emerson Hancock is part of your five best guys in your rotation. And the bullpen is, I mean, they need to add to it eventually, assuming that they're still in a position where it makes sense. to do that. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:45 But yeah, the pitching is starting to become a strength again for this team. And now we're seeing pretty much what we've seen over the last couple of years where the offense is the major problem again. So yeah. Yeah. The good news is we're back to a lot of nights. You're going to have the advantage on the mound. Whereas for the first, you know, two and a half months of this season,
Starting point is 00:18:12 a little touch and go on a night to night basis. But you should be in that spot right now. And tonight you just like unfortunately, their number four outduled your number one because your offense was inept on Monday. And that was the difference because your number four couldn't outdull their number one to even things up. And that's how you lost a series.
Starting point is 00:18:35 So, but yeah, right now Luis Castillo is probably your fourth best starter, which is right where you want him to be. So it's the rotation is at least in a good in a good spot. And you know, it's worth noting the bullpen had their really good homestand. Munoz pitched once. Matt Brash pitched once. Gabe Spire pitched twice, you know.
Starting point is 00:18:56 And so, you know, they're using Bizarro a lot recently. We'll see, you know, and Vargas a lot recently. So, you know, but yeah, the pitching looks like it's back to where we thought it was going to be. At least it has been for the last week. I mean, but I think with their history, it's okay to assume that they're close to back to, you know, being the dominant force they are. Whereas the offense. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:24 So if you're watching on YouTube and you're looking over on the side there under where it says on today's show, it says send help. The mayor is need help. Jerry DePoto and Justin Hollander, please provide it. We'll talk about that in just a moment. But first reminder of this episode of the Lockdown Matters podcast is brought to you by Trade Coffee. Whether you're gearing up for back-to-back meetings, shuttling kids back and forth to activities, or tackling an in-list to-do list, your morning sets the tone for it all. That's why it should start with a perfect cup of coffee crafted just for you.
Starting point is 00:19:59 Inner trade. Trade is the number one coffee destination in the U.S., delivering fresh, incredible coffee from over 50 of the country's top roasters. whether you're a cold brew fan or pour over purists, they've got a roast you'll love. So I took trades quiz and only took a minute, and the first bag they sent me was spot on. The coffee was fresh, smelled amazing, and honestly, kind of ruined grocery store coffee for me in the best way. And if the first match isn't perfect, trade will replace it for free until they get it just right. Right now, trade is exclusively offering customers 50% off your one-month trial at drinktrade.com slash locked on MLB. That's T-R-A-D-E dot com slash L-O-C-K-E-O-N-M-LB for 50% off your one-month trial.
Starting point is 00:20:44 DrinkTray.com slash locked-on MLB. And you're listening to the Lockdown Mariners Podcast. This Mariners Well Club needs help, folks. Luke really is supposedly coming back soon, maybe as soon as Friday. He's looked pretty good on his rehab stent down in Tacoma. Had a huge home run last night. so that that certainly helps the mayors could also use more help on top of that though coolly on c tz on monday we were talking about the uh the carlo santana trade we we talk a lot
Starting point is 00:21:20 about the dinard spanned alex colome trade like oh the mares could use their version of that right this team could also just use its version of the carlo santana trade and the carlo santana trade was made in 2022 for those that don't remember when the mares were sitting at a record of 34 and 41 when they were well outside of the playoff picture at the time the mayor showed a willingness to go out and buy a veteran bat now they didn't pay anything too significant for santana for those who don't remember it was william fleming and white mills right mills whatever william fleming at the time they did like him at least that's what i had heard they actually kind of like like him so i think for them that that kind of stung a little bit
Starting point is 00:22:05 for them to give up Fleming in that deal. But, you know, they brought in Santana, and that was a big part of how things swung and the complete opposite direction for that club, the rest of the way and help them, you know, eventually break the drought and all that good stuff. This team could really use another Carlos Santana type of deal. That deal happened on June 27th, 2022.
Starting point is 00:22:27 It's June 18th. So we're getting close to that point. And, you know, Raphael Devers did just get traded. That deal probably. probably independent of how the rest of the market or where the rest of the market is at right now. So should acknowledge that. But still,
Starting point is 00:22:44 a major trade just happened. So who knows? We can't just say like, oh, the trade market isn't moving at all right now because, again, Debra's just got traded.
Starting point is 00:22:54 But right now, Colby, I'm looking at the Pirates as a potential team to offer. I know right where you're going with this. Yes. do you want to say it? You want Cutch. I want Cutch.
Starting point is 00:23:09 Yeah. Yeah. I mean, like, I don't know if the Pirates will trade you, Andrew McCutcheon. They should. Yeah. But with the number of PR beatings they've taken, rightfully so.
Starting point is 00:23:28 Yeah. Like, do they really think Andrew McCutcheon helps them sell a couple hundred extra tickets tonight? Because that they might be, you know, stupid enough to think that's a good reason to keep the guy. But we just talk about like the similarities between McCutcheon and Sanctana. It's like both are veterans, right? Both have just tremendous respect across the league.
Starting point is 00:23:51 Both are guys who young players flock to. Both are definitely at the end of their careers, not the beginning. And they both were rentals. And, you know, it really is, I mean, the Santana thing was a lot of it. Obviously, you needed first base production, but you also needed a voice in that clubhouse, like a leader in that clubhouse. And, you know, this Mariners team, do they have that? They have some guys like that, but do they have like the dog, the alpha dog in that clubhouse who just, you know, sets the tone for everybody? I don't know. And McCutcheon can certainly
Starting point is 00:24:25 do that. So my only thing is like, because he's so important to the Pirates fan base, as we know, the pirates care deeply about their fans. Would they actually trade him? And honestly, like, would McCutcheon want to come to Seattle? Is that something he's interested in because they are willing to trade him? My guess is that they want to trade him to a spot that he wants to go to. And so. Right, right.
Starting point is 00:24:51 Yeah, like, do they give him final say? That's kind of the question. Even though I don't think he has like a no trade clause or anything like that. I doubt it. But is it kind of like a virtual? no trade clause. Like if you want to stay like we'll keep you. Like it's not a huge deal to us.
Starting point is 00:25:08 But if you want to go like you can tell us where you want to go and where you don't want to go pretty much. Maybe it's one of those type of situations where it's just kind of like an unspoken agreement. But if you're concerned about, you know, how do you get Andrew McCutcheon in the lineup? Especially after Luke Rayleigh returns. Well, I can find ways. I can absolutely find ways. this team just needs bats in general. It doesn't matter really where they play,
Starting point is 00:25:35 except for catcher, really, right? Right. But I can give Andrew McCutcheon the, the DH of bats against lefties that Mitch Garber is getting right now. I can give really time off. I can give Rosarena time off, polo time off. I just started Miles Master Boney against Garrett Crochet.
Starting point is 00:25:53 There are at bats to give to McCutcheon. And McCutcheon's actually having a nice year. Now he's a 112 Wobo. BRC plus guy, you know, 348 on base. You know, not the power speed guy. He used to be not going to give you anything defensively.
Starting point is 00:26:09 He's going to be bad defensively. He's only really played, I think what, a handful of games in the outfield this year anyways. He's 38 years old. But again, you're looking for a guy who sets the tone.
Starting point is 00:26:21 And you're kind of looking to do that on the cheap, right? Like McCutcheon, if the pirates were willing to trade him, and he was willing to come to Seattle, you're not giving up anything of significance for Andrew McCutcheon. You're just not.
Starting point is 00:26:34 He's 38 years old. He's a, he's a DH, 30 year old DH. You're not getting up anything of significance there. So it really checks a lot of boxes. And again, my only hang up here is like, does he want to play for Seattle? Because if you're McCutcheon and you're going to play for somebody other than Pittsburgh, aren't you like, do the Dodgers want me? Do the Padres want?
Starting point is 00:26:58 Do the Phillies want me? Like, do the Yankees? want me like uh Detroit like Seattle's probably not high on that list but it's definitely worth exploring and and like there is no baseball reason not to to explore this right now. If you want this year's version of Carlos Santana, it might very well be Carlos Santana himself, but I don't think the guardians are going to be willing to do that right now in the month of June, maybe next month, but not right now. So if you want this, year's version of Carlos Santana right now or relatively soon before the end of this month
Starting point is 00:27:35 preferably I think it's Andrew McCutcheon and again maybe he doesn't want to go maybe he doesn't you know maybe he doesn't want to go to Seattle maybe he doesn't want to leave Pittsburgh in general whatever but generally speaking the information that we do have Andrew McCutche makes a lot of sense for the Smaris ball club agreed again Cutchin's one of the most well-respected dudes in the entire league. It's great for the clubhouse. He's producing right now.
