Starting point is 00:01:52 That's BetterHelp, H-E-L-P.com slash locked-on MLB. So that was awesome, right? It didn't start awesome. Well, it did start awesome. In the first inning, the Mariners catch a couple of breaks. You know, Chris Bassett threw a couple really nice pitches to Jared Kalanek and Cal Raleigh. Both probably should have struck out. But, you know, they get a break here.
Starting point is 00:02:14 And both those pitches go their way. Bassett obviously frustrated. Then hits Tay Oscar Hernandez and Taylor Tremel comes up and uncorks a grand slam in his first played appearance of the year. Tremel called up just this morning. to help ease the Julio back issue. Julio not on the IAL yet. That is important to note. And it sounds like he should be back in the lineup
Starting point is 00:02:37 when the team plays again in Oakland on Tuesday. Unfortunately, Easton McGee was placed on the 15-day IL, little fishy, but I'm sure we'll probably talk about that on tomorrow's mailbag episode. So if you guys want to send us questions about Easton McGee, feel free.
Starting point is 00:02:54 We'll answer them all tomorrow on the mailbag. episode that we do every Monday. But yeah, so it starts off great. You know, Taylor Trammell, Grand Slam, awesome. Unfortunately, it did, the good vibes did not last long. Marco Gonzalez just did not have it today. Everything in the middle of the plate, the change up. He was just off the plate, just a little too much, couldn't get the calls he needed. And then everything in the middle of the plate, the, the Blue Jays just destroyed. This is a really tough lineup, particularly for someone like Marco, a soft tossing lefty. And things just did not go his way today. He only went three innings gave up eight runs, five earned, one walk, a strikeout.
Starting point is 00:03:32 It just wasn't his day. That type of stuff happens. And we know that Marco is susceptible to these blow-up losses. As much as we love him, he will struggle at times against very good lineup. So a bit of a bummer today, but, you know, the Mariners were able to withstand it. Thanks in large part to the bullpen. How about the bullpen? They came in today and they did not allow a run after the third inning.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Penn Murphy came in, one scoreless inning, walked a guy, but he got two strikeouts, Gabe Spire. Another basic given up, but again, no runs, scoreless inning. Chris Flexen comes in out of the bullpen after being replaced the day before by Easton McGee. Goes two innings, gives up three hits, walks a guy, strikes out two, only one hard hit ball in the two innings.
Starting point is 00:04:17 He was okay, but he did have to dance out of his own self-created trouble a little bit there, but he does a good job of bridging the gap. to Topa, Seawald, and Brash, the three guys that the Mariners trust the most right now. All three go out there, they throw three scoreless innings. They surrender two hits combined, one walk, and the two strikeouts, both belonging to Brash. Who gets the save, the Canadian, gets his first career save in Toronto.
Starting point is 00:04:44 Pretty cool to see. So there's just so much to talk about in this game. We kind of look at how things went trailing four to, or sorry, eight to four in the sixth. Teosker Hernandez hits a big solo home run, which doesn't seem that important at the time, other than the fact that Teosker was having just about the worst series imaginable before he hit the home run.
Starting point is 00:05:08 At one point in the series, he was 0 for 10 with nine strikeouts. No strikeouts today for Teo, which was good to see. He did just the one for four with a solo home run, but he did have three hard hit balls as well. So again, Teo, good game, gets the home run, which doesn't seem like a lot at the time. especially after the Mariners go out and put up a goose egg in the seventh.
Starting point is 00:05:29 But then in the eighth, they get a little bit closer. Jared Kelnick reaches base on an air by Espinall, the second baseman. And Cal Raleigh makes him pay by hitting his first two-run, home run of the day against, you know, Mariner legend, Anthony Bass, to make this an eight to seven game. Things get really tight. Topa does an amazing job. He goes out there seven pitches, three outs, nothing hard hit, just a ton of ground balls. like we've come to expect from him.
Starting point is 00:05:57 And then things get started pretty innocently, honestly. Tommy Lestella, of all people, works a walk in the top of the ninth. He gets moved over on a fielder's choice. Well, Cabiero comes into a run. He gets moved over on a fielder's choice by Thai France. And Colton Wong, unfortunately, strikes out. But J.P. Crawford, as he's prone to do in Toronto, comes through with a big clutch, two-out, two-strike single to score Cabiero.
Starting point is 00:06:24 to push this game into extras. You know, Seawald comes in, does a nice job, getting out of the bottom of the ninth. He got some help. He got some help. Taylor Tremel, remember him from earlier? Big catch jumping into the stands, coming down with the ball. Big smile on his face. It was awesome to see.
Starting point is 00:06:41 Taylor have an awesome game today. He's a guy who's so easy to root for. And then we come up in the 10th inning. Fortunately for the Mariners, Romano was not available today. So it fell on Zach Pop to try and get through the 10th. And he gets, he got Kelnick to fly out. He hung a slider. Unfortunately, Kellnick just couldn't really get it, flies out to center field.
Starting point is 00:07:05 And you're kind of thinking, oh, boy, here we go again. The Mariners have lost three straight one run games. They've lost two straight in extras. And you're just kind of sitting here going like, man, this is, this is not, or they've lost two recently in extras. This is not going to go their way. And then Cal Raleigh, man. Cal Rale, who owns the Rogers Center, hits his second.
Starting point is 00:07:24 two-run, home run of the night to give the Mariners a 10-to-8 lead and one that they would not relinquish. Matt Brash came in and he looked fantastic. The slider was as sharp as ever. He was dotting up the fastball. Gave up the one hit, kind of a bloop off the end of the bat single to George Springer, didn't ultimately cost him. He went out there. He made Bobauchette look silly.
Starting point is 00:07:44 And then he was able to get just off the end of the bat enough of Vladigrero on a slider to record the final out of this game. And this is a big one. You know, the Mariners scuffling a bit. They're about to go to six under 500. There were a lot of people on social media saying that this team can't even beat the A's. And there were a lot of people going to abandon ship. While the Mariners get this win, they are now four games under 500. Not good.
Starting point is 00:08:09 Has not been a good start to the road trip. But now they get to go across the country. They get a day off on Monday to travel. They will play the Oakland A's who right now are the worst team in baseball. Still got to play well. You still have to play well. because as we've seen, the Mariners can lose to anybody in baseball.
Starting point is 00:08:27 But you have to play well. And what this win does today is it kind of takes the pressure off of a sweep a little bit. And we'll talk a little bit about what's going to happen down in Oakland in just a moment. But real fast, a quick reminder that this episode is also brought to you by eBay Motors. For a championship team, it's all about making sure every player is a perfect fit. It's the same when it comes to your vehicle. Every part needs to fit just right. Starting point is 00:09:35 Exclusions apply. So we talked about how big this win was. You're going into Oakland with some momentum. Finally, you really need to take this series from Oakland. They are a bad team right now. And you are going to be, at least as things stand right now, you're going to be throwing your three best guys at them. You'll be throwing Gilbert, Kirby, and Castillo at them.
Starting point is 00:09:55 You know, you never want to say that you have to sweep a series because these are still professionals that you're going up against. But this is a series that lines up really well for Seattle to get some momentum, try and get that four-game winning streak at the very least, you know, take this series when three or four start to build some momentum before, you know, you have to go and face a tough Astros team, who's been playing a little bit better lately. And then a Rangers team that is off to a best,
Starting point is 00:10:18 off to a good start. They're the best team in the American League West right now. So this was just a huge comfort behind victory for the Mariners. And it's nice to see that this team still has that fighting it. It's been a lot of one-run losses. They hadn't won an extras yet. This was kind of the bread and butter of the last couple years team. And today it was, you know, the bullpen held it down right where it needed to be in the offense, gave the offense time to work. This is a great win. There's really no way around it. the Mariners should be, you know, feeling really good when they get on the plane today. And how about Taylor Tremel coming up and possibly providing at least part of the solution to the D.H.
Starting point is 00:10:58 slash fourth outfield spot. We should see Tremel a lot. He has been added. I don't think they're going to send him back down anytime soon. We'll see what they decide to do on Friday when they'll need another starter. Flexen could easily start that. game on Friday. He'll be on his normal rest. He only threw two innings today. That's probably the likely scenario. It's worth noting Brian Wu through yesterday, Emerson Hancock through two days ago.
Starting point is 00:11:26 So they could make that move there. But eventually they're going to have to add another pitcher. And we'll see what they decide to do, who they decide to send down. I know that a lot of us are hoping that it's Tommy Lestella. And I think that's fair. So we'll see what happens there. That move will need to be made by Friday, you know, prior to the game. We'll see who gets to start that game. My guess would be flexing. But hey, you know, right now all eyes are on Oakland. You need the series win.
Starting point is 00:11:56 It would be great if you could get the sweep. Oakland is a bad team that is struggling right now. And ever since the news dropped that, you know, they're moving to Vegas. They've played even worse. So there's not going to be any energy in that ballpark. You're going to have to create your own. You're going to have to come out swinging early. So we'll see how it goes.
Starting point is 00:12:15 But as of today, right, as for today's game, huge victory for the Mariners, exactly what they needed, kind of get a clean slate. It makes that long flight a lot shorter. And the Mariners will line up with their three best guys going against the Oakland days starting on Tuesday. So that's going to do it for this mini, short, bonus,
Starting point is 00:12:39 whatever you want to call it, post-game show. again, Ty will be back tomorrow. We'll be doing a mailbag episode. So please send us your questions on Twitter, which is at L.O. underscore Mariners. You can also send us some email at Lockdown Mariners at gmail.com. We have a few in that email.
