Gregory Santos is finally set to make his Mariners debut.
We'll tell you if he can be the difference maker Seattle needs in the bullpen
than weigh two of the team's biggest potential trade targets against one another
coming up here on the Lockdown Marrars podcast.
Colby, edit.

Ahoy, Sailors.
It is Tuesday, July 9th, 2024.
This is Tanya Gonzalez and Colby Patnaud for the Lockedon
the Marriss podcast, part of the locked on podcast network of your team every day.
On the show today, we're going to talk about the mayor's bullpen getting a potentially
big time reinforcement.
We'll also discuss jazz chisholm and Luis Robert, how the cost of acquisition for both
of those guys could differ and who we ultimately prefer out of the two.
And we'll also go over some quick thoughts on the team's upcoming series with the Padres,
as well as Logan Gilbert being selected to the All-Star game and Andres Munoz getting snubbed.
Before we get into that, though, shout out to our title sponsor today.

So after several setbacks, Gregory Santos is finally.
finally ready to enter the Mariners Bullpen.
He has officially been activated off of the injured list.
Emerson Hancock was sent down yesterday to make room for Santos on the 26th man roster.
It seems like Brian Wu will be able to make a start before the All-Star break in that Anaheim series.
Santos, if you don't remember, all the way back in the early stages of this year was acquired from the Chicago White Sox for Zach Deloach, Pallander Baroa, and the 69th, nice overall pick.
in this upcoming draft.
Santos was supposed to be a part of a three-headed monster
with Matt Braschen, Andres Munoz.
We obviously know what's happened with Brash.
And of course, Santos hasn't pitched at the big league level
with the Marrars as of yet.
But hopefully we'll at least get to see a little bit
of what we were dreaming on this off season
when they acquired Santos.
And the Marys could certainly use it.
This Marys bullpen has been in desperate need
of some high leverage help.
And hopefully Santos,
the idea was when they acquired him that he would be able to help with that.
Hopefully he is able to help with that coming off of this injury.
So Colby, do you think he will be able to do that?
And in general, what do you think the marries are going to be getting in Gregory Santos?
He certainly has the potential to do that.
He did it for stretches last year for the White Sox.
The one thing he doesn't do at a kind of a high leverage rate is he doesn't,
induce a lot of strikeouts.
Last year was about one per inning,
which isn't bad, but again, typically high leverage guys,
you're talking, you know, 11, 12, K per 9,
but not always necessarily, but, you know,
just in general, when you're in these high leverage spots,
you kind of need a strikeout and then a groundout
or something like that.
Like the strikeout becomes important.
So I do think Santos can get more strikeouts.
He certainly has the stuff to do it.
The other thing that's a little bit,
you know, a little bit of something we need to see is that his walk rate last year was very, very good.
And that's not, hasn't been typical now.
Last year was kind of his first full go in the big league.
So it's a little tough to draw any conclusion other than what he did last year.
Yeah, he only had five and two thirds.
That means of work before last year.
Right.
But, you know, what is his control going to look like?
Is he going to walk, guys?
Because we know that you can have great stuff like Ryan Stanick.
but if you don't have, you know, enough control and command and you're in the middle of the plate,
you're going to get touched up and you're going to have games where you surrender like a huge home run
and all of a sudden you turn what was probably a win into a loss and it sucks.
It sucks, right?
So he has to have better control and command.
Stuff-wise, it's very good.
It's 98 to 101 with a two-seamer that just gets insane run.
It's a bowling ball type of sinker, which helps him get a ton of ground balls.
He also has a pretty good slider.
I would say most of the time it's the league average slider.
When paired with the fastball, it's a very good pitch.
But we have seen times where it is a legit 60-grade plus pitch.
Then he has a four-seamer that he'll throw on occasion two,
typically up in the zone, and that one is 97 to 100 as well.
So it is definitely high upside stuff.
Command and control, you know, we'll see.
That's kind of the X factor here.
but it is a sinker-heavy package rather than a four-seam-heavy,
which does kind of limit his strikeout upside a little bit.
The sinker is just an easier pitch to put in play,
although it's harder to square up.
So, yeah, Santos certainly can be that high upside arm.
I still think that they need to go add another one out there at the deadline,
but Santos should almost certainly help.
And as long as he can keep the walks down to what they were last year,
he's going to be a sizable upgrade to the back end of this bullpen.
So what can we expect in terms of usage, especially right away,
coming off of this lat injury that he is,
and only, you know, a handful of rehab appearances?
Yeah, probably no back-to-backs.
Probably not going to be going more than three times a week,
would be my guess, early on.
They are going to bring him along slowly.
I'd be pretty surprised if we saw back-to-back outings from him or outings on back-to-back days from him for at least a month or so.
You know, you got to remember is that he didn't really have a spring training.
He reported and he was behind and, you know, every time they kind of ramped him up, they ramped him back down.
So he didn't really have a full spring training.
He's only appeared in, I think, two rehab assignment games, official rehab assignment games.
And there was plenty of rest between those two.
So I think they're going to be very intentional with this.
I don't think that this is a guy who they're just going to.
going to be like, well, you know, we'll see if we need you in the eighth today.
I think they're going to have like the days he's pitching mapped out, you know, pretty, pretty firmly.
And so it'll be a couple weeks before they kind of be like, hey, you know, we have this spot in the order coming up.
Let's go to Santos here.
You know, they're going to be very careful.
They're going to be very patient and they will map out his workload here for at least a couple of weeks as they kind of try and build him up.
if he pitches today, he's not pitching tomorrow, just, you know, make that mental adjustment.
There are going to be no back-to-backs for a while.
They're probably not going to ask him to finish an inning and then start the next one.
They're probably going to, you know, once you leave the field, you're done for the day,
and you're done for the next day too.
So, yeah, they're also probably not going to ask him to throw more than 20 pitches in an outing.
So if he's struggling or whatever, then they're going to get him out of there as soon as they can.
So they're going to be very careful with him.
They want him in August and September and October.
So, yeah, just don't anticipate that he's going to be available every single day.
And if there seems like there's an obvious spot to use him and they're not going to him,
it's probably because he's just not flat out.
He's just not available.
Right.
So last year, 66 and a third innings pitched 895, case per 9, 231, walks per nine.
That's 66 strikeouts to 17 walks.
339 ERA 265 FIP 331 X-FIP 1.6 F4 only two home runs given up over those 66 and a third
innings pitch 52 and a half percent ground ball rate as well with a 70.3 percent left
on base rate so let's real quick before we we move on here let's talk a little bit about
Logan Evans because we haven't talked about that since the news came out about him being
converted back to a starter.
We talked about it a little bit on the Patreon yesterday,
but just want to get your thoughts on that
because he was also someone that we kind of expected
would get called up around the same time
that Santos would get activated as, you know,
even more help for this bullpen.
But that has not worked out as intended.
So just, yeah, tell us a little bit about what you think about
how that all transpired.
Yeah, I think ultimately the Mariners took a shot.
to see if they can get a guy with, you know, pretty good stuff to see if maybe they shorten about, put him in a one- inning roll,
if they could get, you know, great stuff out of him.
And you can kind of be a pseudo high, or a pseudo-like high leverage type of arm.
But I think, you know, they looked at it for a month.
The stuff didn't really tick up enough, mainly the breaking ball.
Didn't really tick up enough.
They kind of probably looked at it and said, you know, this guy, could he help our Major League bullpen right now?
probably, but in what role could he help them?
Middle relief?
And if you're the Mariners, you're looking at it, you're like, well, we have Austin both who's
pitching really well.
We have Trent Thornton who's pitching really well.
We have Saucato who's pitching pretty well.
You know, we're going to push Stanick down a rung here pretty soon when Santos comes back.
So we actually have the middle of the bullpen pretty well, you know, figured out.
And this guy, do we need another middle reliever?
No, not really.
So let's just put them back in the rotation.
we also now have yet another issue with Brian Wu that we need to contend with as well.
So just have more options available to us just in case something else bad happens.
And also, you know, the hidden bonus of moving Evans to the bullpen, you know, even though it didn't work,
you have now kind of effectively managed his workload enough that he should be able to pitch through the end of the year
because they were going to have to shut him down or they were going to have to skip starts.
and now for the last month or so he's thrown like 10 innings, 11 innings,
that's going to be more than enough to kind of keep him going throughout the year.
So if you do need him in September, if you do need him in October,
he should be available to you and he should be stretched out and all that stuff.
So yeah, I just, I think they looked at it and they said, you know,
is it worth, would we rather have a high leverage arm or sorry,
a mid-leverage bullpen arm or like a number six starter in case we need Hancock
and somebody else at some point this year?
they probably chose the right the right option it's just the mid leverage guy is
something they can replace and i mean Colin Snyder's doing it right now so uh yeah i i just think
that was i don't think that this means that they're trying to trade brian woo or anything like
that i just think it means that looked at it didn't quite tick up the way we want didn't really
lose anything so let's just move it back into the rotation yeah now evans is also probably
a guy that's getting uh quite a bit of interest in these trade talks at the marries are
of course having right now as they gear up for the trade deadline we're going to talk about the
deadline a little bit more here specifically about jazz chisholm as well as louise robert
and just a moment but first a reminder this episode of the locked on airs podcast is brought to you by

The Marrers are kicking off a quick two-game series with Padres tonight.
You can catch all the action on the Marriss hometown broadcast,
series XM via the SXM app.
All you have to do to find that is search the word Marrars.
So we mentioned this briefly on yesterday's episode.
Craig Mish,
who is essentially the Ryan Divish of the Marlins world,
had reported that the Mariners are a team to watch
when it comes to Jazz Chis.
He also threw out the pirates and the royals.
Now Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports and Fowl territory has kind of added some fuel to that fire,
saying that jazz chisholm is going to get traded.
I don't think there's much question about that, end quote.
So it seems like the Marlins are going to be dealing jazz at some point.
And with the way that Craig Mish kind of worded his report,
it seems like the mergers might be the most aggressive in that regard.
It seems like with some of the wording it,
the Marlins seem like they're,
they're hearing what they want to hear in these trade discussions.
And they feel pretty good about getting a deal that they want to move on from Chisholm.
So let's just talk about that first and foremost here before we kind of get into the Luis Robert stuff and all that that I want to talk about.
Jazz Chisholm just in a vacuum, what do you think of the player?
What do you think of the fit with regards to the mirrors?
A solid player. I don't think he's a great player. He's a left-handed hitter. He's obviously right-handed throw. Good athlete. Certainly has some pop. So two and a half years of club control. So you'd get him theoretically for three-pennant races. He's R. Beligible. He was R. Beligible last winter. So he'll be R.P two this year. So, you know, probably going to make five, six million bucks next year. And then probably,
I don't know, 10-ish the following year.
So, you know, for three pennant races, you get them for, I don't know, $16 million, give or take.
Not too shabby on the price tag there.
He's playing a lot of, he's playing exclusively center field the last two years,
but he's also a natural shortstop who broke into the big leagues as a second baseman.
He's a good athlete.
He can handle both spots pretty well.
So if you're a Mariners fan, you know, and you're looking for second base help,
Jazz Chisholm could be the guy.
even though he hasn't played second base in a while.
It is his position that he came up playing.
So he has a lot of experience there.
And he's pretty good.
He's pretty good out there.
He's pretty good in center field too.
He's at least average in center.
Graded out as above average last year.
He's been slightly below average this year.
So you figure he's about average out there.
He can also handle a corner.
So get some versatility.
You get a left-handed bat with some pop.
You get some speed, something that, you know, this lineup could use some more of.
you get a guy who
certainly brings like an aura
to the club and
he certainly has a personality
so there could be some
juice and like injected into the clubhouse there
so there's some positives here
sure the negatives is that he's
only had over 500 played appearances once in his
entire career he's never played more than
125 games I think is his career high
yeah yeah so you know
know he's never been a three-win player, although he was on pace to do that.
In one of his injury short season, he was on pace to be like a four and a half five-win player that year.
Yeah, 2020.
He was worth 2.6 out four and just 60 games played that year.
Right.
So about a third of the season, he's on pace to be, you know, six-win players.
So he certainly has that upside.
One of the other downsides.
So, again, obviously, not a guarantee to stay healthy.
His slugging is way down this year.
So that's a little something to be concerned about.
So is everyone's, to be fair.
Right. He has struck out. He does, he has had strikeout issues in the past. This year, it's a little bit better. It's, you know, from a Mariners perspective, it's great from the rest of baseball perspective. It's below average still. And before this year, he was a pure platoon guy. He just couldn't hit lefties. This year, he's actually hitting lefties better than he has righties. So he's been above average against both handedness pitchers, though. So, you know, you kind of look at it.
Chisholm overall, pretty solid player.
Is he like an all-star level caliber player?
He might make an all-star team or two,
but I don't think that's his ceiling.
I think he's just an above-average three-win player
who can help you on defense.
He can help you on the base.
He can help you in the batters box.
You can hit a home run.
He can steal a base.
Like there's just a lot of like tools here.
And again, another bonus is that he's 26 years old.
Yeah.
He doesn't turn 27 until February.
So you're getting a guy who,
in his athletic prime, who's starting to figure out how to hit lefties,
who can play second base and the outfield for you,
is going to bring some speed and some energy and some power to your lineup.
So, yeah, there's a lot to like here.
It's a good player, but it's obviously not a great player.
There are some pretty serious warts on jazz chisholm.
So you slashed in 255, 326, 407 this year.
That's a 105 WRC plus, 1.4F4F4.
He's lowered his K rate quite substantially.
He's running his lowest K rate of his career right now.
Also running his highest walk rate of his career just by 0.1% though over his previous career high in 2022.
He's already played 87 games, 10 homers, 40 ribs, 17 steals.
The Marlins are probably going to try and sell him as a star.
Because he's kind of just, he's always kind of had that billing with him.
but it's never really been earned by his play outside of 2022.
And again,
that was 60 games.
So I hesitate in terms of what it could cost.
So that kind of brings me to what I wanted to ultimately talk about here.
Luis Robert,
Jazz Chisholm,
those are two guys that I think the mayors are doing a lot of homework on right now.
We've heard reports that the White Sox have been scouting,
Mariner's prospects.
Now there's the thing from,
Mitch about the mayor's being a team to watch in regards to jazz chisham.
Just trying to put two and two together here.
It seems like they're doing a lot of groundwork on this on both of these guys.
It does seem like it's one or the other.
Even though that I don't think that those guys should even cost really in the same universe
when you stack them both up together.
Even though that both of them pretty similar in terms of like there's a lot of questions
specifically about their health.
But, you know, at least Luis Robert.
He's played 140 plus games in a season before.
Jazz Chisholm can't say that.
And Roberts' high has been much higher than Chisholm's high in his career.
There's also another year of club control with Luis Robert and it's cost controlled.
He's making 12 and a half this year.
That's obviously going to be prorated by the deadline.
then 15 next year, then a pair of $20 million club options in 2026.
In 2027, meanwhile, with Chisholm, like you mentioned, he's Rube eligible.
It's probably going to be like $5 or $6 million next year.
And then who knows, in 2026.
So again, though, because of kind of like the star power, if you will,
that Chisholm for one reason or the other carries,
feel like the costs are going to be relatively similar.
It's going to be a heftier package overall in terms of just quantity for Robert, I would think.
But Chisholm is probably going to still cost you like a Harry Ford or someone like that,
which is also, you know, someone that could possibly be involved in the,
in the Robert trade as well.
So if you had to go one or the other and try and just guess what the cost could be here,
Who would you like to see the mares go after?
I'd rather than take a shot on Robert.
Higher upside, more impact at the bat, better defender out in the outfield, the extra year club control.
I think all that really does add up.
Like I said, it's a big risk, you know?
And you ask me who's less of a risk?
I'd probably say jazz just because, well, he's going to cost less.
So it's probably less risky than Robert.
But I think, how much less, though, do we think?
I think I think Robert or I think jazz is going to cost you like a Harry Ford as the headliner.
Whereas I think for Robert, Harry Ford is a co-headliner at best.
So that's pretty significant.
I mean, like for Robert, you probably have to do something like,
young and Ford, whereas for jazz, it's probably one or the other to headline that deal.
So, yeah, you know, if I'm only able to get one of these guys and have to pick which one I'm going to go after,
I'm going to go after Robert because I think that he can bring me something that nobody else on this market can do.
Whereas in terms of Chisholm, while he's a good player, I feel like I can get something close to that level of production without.
having to give up, you know,
a top prospect for it.
Because like, what is Chisholm at the end of the day?
Really right now?
Outfielder who's slightly above league average
offensively.
Like when you really break it down, that's what he is.
Because also, could I go out and get like Luis Robert and
Jonathan India?
Yeah.
Or Nico Horner.
It's like Robert and India or jazz and like, you know,
jazz and.
I don't know.
It was a little bit better of a second basement, but you don't want it like,
jazz and Horner or,
or,
you know,
Robert or in India.
Like,
you know,
I think you could certainly make an argument for either side,
but I'd rather take the upside shot of Robert and,
and,
you know,
just count on India to basically be,
uh,
what I was hoping Chisholm would be.
And I mean,
again,
that's assuming that India is even available,
which we don't know.
Right.
The reds might be adding.
We'll see.
Um,
but yeah,
you know,
obviously it's such a hard market to figure out here.
But, you know, obviously a lot of hesitation here with both of these guys because it's just,
it's going to cost so much.
This is a franchise altering decision specifically when it comes to Luis Robert.
And again, it's someone that's played over 100 games once in his entire career out of five possible seasons.
And this year, you know, he hasn't been particularly that great.
you know 308 games played he's been hurt already missed time yeah he's been hurt and since he's come back
with 33.3.3% K rate he's striking out a third of the time right now 10.1% walk rate which is nice
that's significantly higher than his his career norms but he slashed in 224 302 4090
117 WRC plus 0.9 f4 lastly here I just I have to ask do you think
think it's possible they could get both.
Yeah.
So that would be like Harry Ford and what do you think the secondary piece for jazz would be?
For jazz?
Maybe like a Tai Pete.
Okay.
Maybe, I mean, it kind of depends on what Miami wants, but it could be a Logan Evans.
It could be a, you know, how long do they want to wait type of situation here?
So, yeah, I think type Pete or if they want somebody a little bit closer, Ben Williamson, like, I think you're probably looking at like Ford and like a top 10 to 15 guy is the second piece.
Right.
So it would be forward and let's say just on the high end Pete and then Montas and Young.
Young, Montez, Locklear.
Yeah.
For Robert.
Brandon Garcia, something like that.
Yeah. It's a lot. That's a lot. But you would add two guys who are club controlled for for multiple years.
Right. You get five full years combined of those two guys.
Who both have very high upsides. Robert more so than jazz.
They're mid-20s.
Yeah.
So I mean, maybe.
Might be worth it.
Yeah. All right. So let's switch gears here.
Let's talk a little bit about Logan Gilbert getting selected to the All-Star game on
Andreas Munoz getting snubbed and then give you our quick thoughts on the Padre series.

four correct picks. You can turn $10 into $1,000. Price picks is available in more than 30 states
across the country, including California, Texas, and Georgia. And a general rule of thumb here,
if they breathe air and they're scheduled to pitch against the bearers, it's probably a good
idea to pick more on their strikeouts. Download the price picks app today and use the promo code

Pick more, pick less. It's that
easy. And you're
listening to the Locked-on Marries podcast.
Once again, you can catch the M's and
the Padres on the Marys hometown broadcast
for Sirius XM via the SXM app tonight.
All you have to do to find that is search
the word Marrars and we'll catch you guys
after the game tomorrow. That will be our next
episode. A little post-game
show for you guys. Hopefully the Marys will give us
when to talk about
on that show.
So let's talk about Logan Gilbert, who's starting tonight.
Get into that a little later on.
But first, he has been selected to the All-Star game.
His first All-Star selection and will be the Mariners lone All-Star representative.
For now, we'll see.
He is not going to pitch in that game, though,
because he is currently slated to start the last game of essentially the first half of the season for the Marers in Anaheim
on Sunday before the All-Star break.
So it's possible that his teammate,
Andreas Munoz, who for whatever reason was snubbed,
in the first place, could replace him on the roster or someone else.
We'll see, because there are certainly going to be more than just one opportunity
for him to replace someone on the roster.
So firstly, Logan Gilbert, the Mariners' lone All-Star representative, well-deserved, right?
yeah absolutely um you know he's been particularly good the last month or so so uh right when he needed to
kind of you know stake his candidacy or whatever uh he really stepped up his game so yeah if they only
got one probably deserves to be logan i think they should have had more than one but i mean like
only two uh so uh but if i had to pick one i would probably say Logan has been uh the most
to be on the squad.
So, you know,
kudos to him and congrats to him and his family.
You know,
I'm sure he's a little bum that he's not going to be able to pitch in that
in that game,
but he'll still be there.
He'll still hang out and he'll still be part of the festivities.
So,
you know,
probably not the last time.
Logan Gilbert heads to an all-star game.
But that is his first time.
So congratulations to Logan.
And then Munoz doesn't make it in,
partly because Clay Holmes made
the roster, which I don't understand.
Clay Holmes, of course,
gave up that, what, four-run lead in New York to the,
to the Marrers.
I think we all remember him for that.
But also, he's been, he's been pretty good this year.
He just hasn't been as good as Andres Munoz.
Like the numbers for Munoz are significantly better,
pretty much across the board than,
then Holmes.
And also then you factor in how important Munoz has just been to the
mergers in general this year, especially with,
with the context.
of what we talked about earlier on in the show
with Santos not being able to pitch
so far and Brash obviously
missing the entire year.
And all the times that, you know,
Munoz has been asked to complete,
you know, four out, five out saves for this team.
He's been huge.
He's been one of the most valuable relievers
in all of baseball. It's an absolute crime,
an absolute shame that he is not even
on the initial roster. Like, even if he
makes it as a replacement, like it's still,
like, I feel some type of way about that.
like he should have made the initial roster in general but hopefully he's able to make it uh still
as a replacement he absolutely deserves it he's been fantastic this year so um all right so let's get into
the game tonight Padres Mariners Padres have actually been pretty solid this year but they're you
know one of those teams are so kind of just hovering around the wild card like the rest of most of
the national league they're 49 and 45 this year and this comes after you know trading Juan Soto
Um, they acquired Dylan Cs, of course.
We're not going to see him.
We're going to see Adam Mazer tonight who, uh, I know you believe the,
the mayor should jump all over, but as we know, uh, with this offense, it doesn't matter who
they face on the bump.
And like I said in my prize picks ad read, if they breathe and they're pitching against
the mayors, take more on their strikeout total.
Uh, I think that's a pretty safe way to go in that regard.
but yeah it's Logan Gilbert against Adam Mazur I mean on paper that's a game that you absolutely should win
but who knows as the Marys go for their 50th win of the season so what do you think
I mean there may not be a more mismatch pitching match up you're going to see for the rest of the year
and I still have very little confidence that the Mariners are going to win this game so
tells you everything you need to know about where the offense is right now yeah so you know
we'll see.
Maser doesn't get swings and misses.
He doesn't get strikeouts.
He walks a lot of guys.
His first six starts have been really bad at the big league level.
So in his first one, he was actually pretty good.
So think about how bad he must have been in the rest of them for those numbers to look like that.
So in theory, this is the perfect guy to face when you're trying to, you know, get your groove back at the plate.
But does it really matter with this offense?
I guess we're going to find out.
but yeah, it's certainly going to be,
it's certainly more likely they figure something out tonight than it is tomorrow
when they have to face Michael King.
So hopefully they do win tonight so they could secure at least a series split.
These little two-game series are tough.
But, you know, I feel like this is a game that they absolutely should win,
but it's just really hard to, like, I wouldn't put any money on it.
I'll say that.
Yeah.
we know the deal. We've watched this
offense, especially over the last three weeks.
It's been horrific.
And we all saw what happened
on those final four innings of that Blue Jays game
on Sunday. So hopefully not too much
longer that we have to watch this offense as
currently constructed. So see.
All right. That is going to
do it for us before we get
