Colby will answer the question, why aren't we talking about this guy heading into the deadline? We'll also discuss with the Mariners might consider sending Colt Emerson back down if his offensive struggles continue.

But we start with last night's six to five walkoff loss to the Marlins. Mariners were down for nothing early on, another rough road outing for Brian Wu. However, it was nice to see the Marrins find a way to claw back to a five to four lead. But unfortunately, Gabe Spire immediately gives up a game-tying home run and things get forced to extras. Weston Wilson makes a baffling base running decision as the mayors continue to make fundamental errors that just absolutely kill them.

And the Marlins get a relatively easy chance to walk things off and they take advantage. And it sucks because this would have been. one of the mayor is better wins of the entire season. You know, impressive comeback against maybe the hottest team in baseball. Offense did some nice things. They weren't great. Don't get me wrong. They still only went two for 13 with runners in scoring position.

But there were some real positives in this game. They just couldn't get it across the finish line. And that is a bummer. Yeah, you know, it was, it's not a trait of this team, I would say, that they are resilient in that they bounce back. and they can overcome early adversity. In fact, quite the opposite. This team gets down by a couple runs early, and they seem to pack it in

and just kind of go through the motions a little bit. But there was some fight here. They really grinded throughout bats against Max Meyer. We were able to kick him out in the sixth inning. And, you know, they had opportunities there to really put this game out of reach. And unfortunately, they could not get the big hits when they really needed them.

They did get a couple of big hits. They did slug pretty well. Cal Raleigh had one of his best games of the year, sadly. But, you know, they did some positive things. They scored five. And if you score five runs with this pitching staff, you should win that game. Like, that's a win 90% of the time. Unfortunately, for you, you know, Gabe Spire really had his first bad outing

that I can remember since, like, opening day. I mean, I know there's probably one or two more mixed in there, but certainly his worst outing since he came back from the I.L. So, you know, it's unfortunate that it goes that way. And then you have to rely on Weston Wilson and Michael Rooker to make plays for you. And that just they're not capable of doing that. Like, that's not who they are. So, yeah, it sucks, you know, that they couldn't show that they had that, you know,

club in their bag, that, that resiliency. I guess in a way they did show it because they did come back. But also, they still lost that game. So we still can't say that they won a game that, you know, in which they face a ton of adversity early because they didn't win it. But there were some positives again. Wu sucks on the road again. But everything else kind of feels,

everything else about that game kind of feels like a little bit more like an outlier than anything to be newly concerned about. Like I'm not concerned about Gabe Spire all of a sudden. You know, it's just one of those things where, you know, it just didn't go your way. It didn't bounce your way. And you made a couple little mistakes. Victor Robles bobbing that ball out in center field to let Hicks

get the extra base certainly was, you know, was part of the factor and the wild pitch or the pass ball or whatever to score them. That inning was a disaster. And that one run can come back to kill you. And that's what happened here. So it really is unfortunate, especially unfortunate, because Wu was only able to go five, which means with four high leverage relievers, you know, either you have to try and save Munoz for the 10th, which you might not get to, or you have to use them.

and then or you have to use Rucker in the 10th. And so, you know, unfortunately, Dan did the right thing. You go to your closer in the 9th because you have to make sure you get to the 10th before you worry about it. But Rucker's just not equipped. And I would hope that maybe there's a move coming there to demote him. And Weston Wilson, just inexcus, I mean, we're not talking about a 22-year-old rookie here. We're talking about 29-year-old parts of like four or five seasons in the big leagues.

like played a thousand games in the miners like he knows better than to do that and you know those are the little things that really add up at the end of the day but there were some positives out of this game but we're almost 100 games in like we're not we're not talking about moral victories here no

real frustrating part about woo start is that a lot of the damage came with two outs you know second inning gives up the leadoff homer to Owen Casey but then gets two outs after that it should be able to get out of the inning he's facing with the nine hole hitter and Javier Sonoa and then gives up a single

and then that flips the lineup over Hicks singles and then Wu throws the wild pitch and that scores an additional run in that inning and then the next inning gets two quickouts to start the inning and then Griffin Conan singles he walks Owen Casey and then Jacob Marcy drives in Conan

you got to be able to finish off innings I just I don't really know what's going on with Wu on the road. I don't think he even really knows what's going on with himself on the road right now as we talked about. We speculated that maybe it was a second time

through the lineup thing, but this time around it wasn't in Miami. Just a lot of issues for Wu in this one. Offensively though, like I said, you know, there were some positives despite the two for 13 with runners in scoring position. Obviously, they had the bases loaded and what the fifth inning

I think when they force Meyer out of the game and then Peterson comes in and they're not able to do anything against Peterson they're not able to convert in that situation they put up a zero in that inning but you know nice game for Cal Raleigh a couple of doubles for him drives in a run and I thought Cole Young

had a fantastic game obviously had the home run had three hard hit balls I thought his best played appearances of the night though was his 10 pitch walk that he had there in the eighth inning. It's a tie game, 4 to 4. He fouls off a couple of tough breaking balls

just outside the bottom of the strike zone to extend that at a bat. And he winds up working a walk to extend that inning that brings up Victor Robles and then Falchet throws the wild pitch and that allows the Marys to take the lead there in that situation. I thought that was a very impressive played appearance from Cole Young.

And he just continues to impress me. Obviously defensively, but offensively over the last month or so, he's been fantastic. Yeah, it's pretty obvious. You know, Cole Young should be an all-star. He is at worst, the second best, second baseman in the American League. And frankly, I don't think Ernie Clement is better than young. So yeah, you know, he's gone through his struggles this year, too, and he's made the adjustments necessary, and he's kicked it back up. He looks like a big leaguer. You know, he's a young big leaguer. So the, you know, the slow starts or the, you know, the cold streaks

you're going to be a little bit longer than they will be two, three, four years from now. But he really is making these quick adjustments and he's getting to the pole side power more. He's drawing walks. You're really seeing the whole bag from Cole. And, you know, he's still developing. Like, I still think there's more that you can get out of him on the bases, for example. And that'll come with some experience and some growth there. And, you know, he's 22.

Like, we talk about how cool, like Cole Demerson's 20 and he's doing this and this and this. And it's like, yeah, I mean, like Cole Young is 22. He's also a high school kid. And he's a bona fide big leaguer. Like there's no discussion about sending him down or there's no thought that he's a problem or anything like that. Like, no, he's a good, solid player. Very, very excited to have him for the next, you know, half decade and maybe longer. Who knows?

He does seem kind of like a Mariners extension candidate, but we'll see if they want to go down that road. But Cole Young's been exceptional this year. And again, he should be an all-star. It doesn't look like it's going to happen if the Mariners are going to get a replacement all-star. It's probably going to come on the pitching side. But Cole Young, very, very good year this year. And, yeah, the offense after kind of an adjustment period in May and parts of June,

really starting to come back to what we were hoping to see from Cole. And again, there's still growth. It could be a little better against Lefties. I think there's some base running things you can clean up. But the tools are all there. And he's going to be a very, very good baseball player. Probably not a star, but he's going to be a very good player for. the next decade.

So obviously, Cole Emerson has had some big moments since he got called up. But since the start of June, he is slashing 191, 255, 372. That's an 80 WRC plus with a 37.3% strikeout rate. It's not good. It's been a rough go for him for a while now at the plate.

obviously he's 20 years old we knew there were going to be some pretty big peaks and valleys with him over the course of his first year in the bigs we talked about this before he even got called up this is not particularly surprising right and i'm not advocating for the mariners to send emerson down especially not right now uh but brendan donovan is expected to be back sometime after the all-star break and at that point the mariners might have a decision to make on Emerson if they would like to send him down for a little while to see if he can figure things out. But, you know, obviously this is kind of a delicate situation that the mayors have to handle here, though, if they are to consider sending him down because you can make a strong

argument that while, you know, you want to prioritize Emerson's development, sending him down would make the club overall worse even with his offensive struggles because that would mean JP Crawford's going back to shortstop, and we all know how that goes, and Brennan Donovan before his injury at third base was not particularly good either. But again, you have to prioritize the kid and his development at the end of the day.

That's what should be the most important thing here. And if you feel that's what's best for his development is to go down to Tacoma again and work on some things, then you might have to do that. But when do you think that becomes a real consideration for the Mariners, Colby? Maybe the end of the month. You know, you could also have Cole Young play shortstop and put Donovan at second and then

have JP stay at third. So, yeah, I think end of the month is probably about that time because, you know, like you said, you do want to prioritize the player's development. And if, yeah, if Colt Emerson is striking out 40% of the time and he's actually trending towards that number. Like it's getting worse. He's really struggling against breaking balls right now. So yeah, at some point you do have to look at it and say like, look, this is what we

wanted to have happen. It's not happening. You have to go and you have to reset. You have to get right. Because at some point, the defensive upgrade is not worth, you know, the massive, you know, defensive downgrade or offensive downgrade that you would conceivably be getting. Now, JP hasn't been swinging the bat all that well either. So, but Donovan coming back, if we assume he's roughly what he was when he was last healthy, then you do have that opportunity.

So, yeah, you know, we hear a lot about how, you know, mature Colt Emerson is and how, you know, good of a head he has on his shoulders and all of that. So, you know, if the idea is that makes him less prone to, you know, whatever, because he's struggling into big leagues, that should also protect him from being demoted for, little while to fix some of the problems that he has right now in his game. So I don't think you can sit here and tell me like, oh, well, he's going to struggle in the majors, but it's fine. He's so mature. He'll handle it and then be like, but you can't send him down because then that'll just shatter his confidence. Like, I don't think you can make both of those statements. Either he's mature enough or he's not. And obviously the Mariners think he is because if they didn't, they would call them up at 20. So yeah, you know, it's just one of those things. I think even to the end of

the month. It's also, you know, collecting data here. I mean, I don't know. I doubt this is a serious thing, but like, I don't know. What if you get two more weeks and Colts still really struggling, all of a sudden, do you look at short stops who might be available at the trade market and kind of, you know, do that? I don't know. Probably not, but I think you have to put everything on the table right now. Like, I can't let 20-year-old Colt Emerson prevent me from doing everything I can to win a World Series and there's a possibility to upgrade at shortstop in the short term. And, you know, that means putting Colt Emerson in Tacoma for the rest of the year, at least for a couple months, then I'm going to do it.

So, again, I don't think that's going to happen. I don't really think there's any short stops that are going to be out there. That would be a massive upgrade from either JP or him. So, yeah, but I do think that you do have to have the conversation. I think it's something that you should be monitoring now. And if there's not, you know, some kind of turnaround, it doesn't have to be dramatic, but can you strike out 30% of the time? Can you have it on base of 300, you know, and if you can do those things with the defense,

you're fine hitting eighth or ninth, especially when Donovan comes back, because that probably means JP goes back to hitting nine. And so you do have kind of the setup guy for the top of the order in the nine hole, where right now you don't because Colt Emerson's not getting on base whatsoever. So right now Colts really relying on slug and he's really relying on defense to carry his value, which again at 20 years old bottom of the order that's fine

but there does come a point like a 37% strikeout rate is not sustainable like for anybody that is that is a black hole in your lineup and at some point you know you have to question

how much value is there in the upgraded defense I think it's fair to ask and maybe the mayor has come to the conclusion that it's still a net positive which I mean it could be shortstop's an incredibly important position But I think by the end of the month, you have to really start to push and be like, look, either this is happening or it's not.

And if it's not, we're not seeing signs of it improving quickly, I think you got to, you know, swallow hard and either move cold to short or put JP back at short and just kind of live with the defense that you get because you do need some kind of offense from this club. And offense right now is the biggest Achilles heel of this team. Again, though, it's just, it's such a difficult situation because, you know, we've preached like the Mariners getting you know taking small wins here and you know having cold emerson's defense just in a vacuum would be a small win right even if he's not giving you much offensively just because he's that much better than jp is at shortstop but um yeah if your solution here is we'll go trade for a shortstop okay who because like i'm looking at the f4 leaders at shortstop right now with a minimum of 100 plate appearances bobby wood junior he's

He's obviously not getting traded. Otto Lopez, not getting traded. Kevin McConagal, Brian Rocchio, Ellie Daly, Daly Cruz, Colson Montgomery, C.J. Abrams, Dansby, Swanson. Trade for Jeremy Pena. Like, what aren't you getting? You go 20 players deep here, if not more,

before you find someone that's like, okay, that might make some sense. And that's Isaiah Connor Folefa. So at the time that I said that, I didn't even realize that ICF has a pretty nasty forearm injury that he's dealing with right now. So he's probably not even an option. Yeah, there's just not a lot out there.

We know that this is a thin trade market already. But yeah, I do think, though, there does come a time where the bats are so bad. And he looks so lost at the plate that, like, at some point, it's like, look, man, maybe you're our best defensive shortstop right now. But we can't survive. We can't survive with this. Like, we can't have a black hole. And, you know, part of this is what is Julio doing if he's back? does Cal look like, who had a nice game yesterday, by the way.

Like, you know, if Cal and Julio and Josh are hitting, then you don't really need that much from Hancock. But if those guys are still kind of doing this. Hancock. There, yeah. You don't really need much from Colt if those guys are hitting. But if they're not, you know, then you kind of can't afford any black holes because you're not built to absorb that.

So we'll see what the mayors want to do. I don't think they're going to entertain that, that conversation. for a while, but I think internally, as they can give all of the, you know, the kudos and all the platitude they want to Colt Emerson publicly. But behind the scenes, they should be at least, you know, kind of talking about like, hey, at what point is this just something we need to switch up, even if it's just for a couple weeks or a month? Look, if Cole Emerson wasn't 20, if he was, you know, a veteran established big league or 27 years old or whatever, we're probably not having this conversation because I'm just keeping the defense on the roster.

Again, it's just you got, look, you've invested heavily in this guy. You know, you want to prioritize what's best for him. And so again, if the mayor is feel what's best for him is sending him back down to allow him to work on things in a less pressurized environment, then you probably have to do it because even if, even if it means the big league club ultimately gets worse. Yeah. Yep. It's, again, I, at the end of the day, I would be pretty shocked if the Mariners sent down Colton Emerson at any point this year. I think they're going to ride or die with him. But yeah, that's fine. I mean, yeah, I guess. But like, there does come a point to me where it's like, I have to prioritize the play. It's the same reason why like, well, you need the bullpen up. Why don't you call up Ryan Sloan right now and put him in the bullpen? I'm not, you know, disrupting his personal development for, you know, a marginal upgrade.

you know, in July when I could just wait another month or two and do it then. So you do have to, I know it's kind of we talk about like you have to win now. Everything should be about winning now. But with the players that you see a future with, you do want to develop them and do what's right by them. Because again, the Mariners, fortunately or unfortunately or however you see it, they're not the Dodgers. They're not the Mets. They're not going to spend these ridiculous amounts of money on players. So they need to do everything they can to keep the window open for as long as they can.

they need to be the brewers, they need to be the raise, they need to prioritize their long-term assets, you know, and there are times to go for it and then say screw the, you know, the long term, but we're not there quite yet. No. And so, you know, the other thing, too, is when Donovan gets back, assuming that everyone stays healthy, which, given the way things have gone this year, probably not going to be the gays. But yeah, like, let's just assume everyone stays healthy, Hulio gets back, Brennan gets back, everyone that should be in the lineup. is in the lineup, right? Someone that's in the current lineup right now is going to be the odd man out. I wonder how many times that's going to be Colt Emerson and if maybe some of those days off

that they can give him, ultimately help him in the end. Yeah, I would say pretty good odds that if they're facing a lefty, Colts get a day off. If, like you said, they get everybody back healthy at the same time, which, L.O. Why aren't we talking about this guy?

So Colby, there is someone that we haven't talked about heading into the trade deadline that you think we should be talking about. Who is that? Well, this player is somebody we've talked about quite a bit over the years, including last summer and this winter. This player plays on a team that is currently 14 games out of first place. and they are a four and a half back of the wild card with four teams in front of them. And yet,

I haven't seen a single trade on fan fiction Friday. I haven't seen a single article. I haven't seen a single mention of former mariner Catel Marte in quite a while. Okay. Why aren't we talking about Catel Marte? Because we talk about this team needs a right-handed bat. Cattel's a switchy.

We talk about this team. could really use a middle of the order thump, somebody to kind of replace some of the production that you lost from Cal Raleigh's inevitable regression. And, you know, Tyler, I mean, let me ask you this, did the Mariners, or did

the Mariners and Diamondbacks discuss Catel Marte this winter? Yeah. They did. In fact, we know part of the offer that was made for Catel Marte. Now, I think what people would tell me is like, well,

Catele-Marté's got a no-trade clause. He's got the 10-5 rights. Okay, we talk about Sayya Suzuki, who also has a no-trade clause. We talk more about Byron Buxden, who also has a no-trade clause. And by the way,

he's been much more vocal about not wanting to leave Minnesota. Yeah, can we stop with the Byron Bucks and stuff? He's not leaving Minnesota. Right. So the no-trade clause is a thing. I think people would say, like, oh, well, where are you going to play them?

For a bat like Cite, you find a way to put him in, lineup. Now, he's not having an incredible year this year relative to him, but he's the best hitter. He'd be the best hitter for the Mariners by far. Well, him and Randy. So you play him at second, you play him at third, you dh him, whatever. And then by the way, you do have openings at third base and left field next year. He's under club control for the next four years. You get him for 12 million this year, I think 15 next year. And then it's like $20 million options and all that. Like, this is a good player on a mediocre middling team that is nowhere close to catching the Dodgers,

who the Mariners have a good working relationship with, and they already know they have a rough idea of how they value each other's players. Like, why are we not talking about? At the very least, the possibility of exploring Cotel Marta trade ideas again this summer. Why not? By the way, what's been the big hold up here, we think? Starting pitching. The Mariners don't want to trade. Guess what the Mariners have excess of now all of a sudden starting pitching because of the emergence of Emerson Hancock the the temperature of these trade talks have changed dramatically because now all of a sudden you might feel pretty good about including Logan Gilbert or George Kirby and trade talks because hey or maybe Emerson Hancock even if you're the time of back you probably

like Emerson Hancock more now than he did six months ago so why are we not talking about this like I understand like it's probably not going to happen. Every trade we talk about is probably not going to happen. We've some more time talking about Mason Miller for crying out loud. Then we've talked about Catelle Marte. So my question is just this. If we're going to explore every possibility, why aren't we exploring the Ctele Marte possibility?

Because while the Diamondbacks will sit here and tell you, we don't want to trade Cotel Marte, we know they did. We know they did. And they were very least open to it because the Mariners and them got far enough down the line that they were exchanging names to try and find a deal. So why would anything have changed three months later, except for the valuation of Citele-Marte? And by the way,

if it changed in favor of the Mariners, because now they have that major league starting pitcher, they can afford to give up to get Cotel-Marté back. So, yeah, I mean, it really is, to me, baffling that, like, we have started every trade episode. Like, here's this week's Cotel-Martay trade offer. What do you think? Because the guy just makes a lot of sense.

It's not the cleanest fit in the world, but man, that bat in the middle of this lineup. Yeah. That's something we should be talking about more. Yeah, it's interesting because, you know, you mentioned having specifically his right-handed presence in the lineup. It's only a 107 WRC plus this year from the right side, 254, 315, 444.

From the left side, though, he's MVP, Citelle Marte. You know, 149 WRC Plus 302, 349-59-94, the slash line. a dude's still really really really freaking good from the left side you know again it's just there's the money conversation um would he is he so desperate to get out of arizona that he would accept a trade back to Seattle I don't know yeah we'll see I understand there are roadblocks here but yeah there are roadblocks with every single player we've talked about over the last couple over the last month why are we ignoring Ctele Martez

Because the whole thing like, well, are they concerned about his clubhouse? Apparently not because they attempted to trade for him this winter. So I just think everything that is thrown out there as a possible roadblock applies to basically everybody else we've talked about. There are players with no trade clauses that we've talked about. And again, we talk about, hey, Seattle's got this great relationship with Arizona and Tampa Bay and San Diego a little bit. like, okay, well, who's the best player on Arizona? It's Catelle Marte. Who's a player that the Diamondbacks tried to trade as recently as this last winter?

It's Cotel Marte. Who is the single biggest impact player that could be moved this summer? It's Cetel Marte. Who's a team that's out of it, realistically out of it, but wants to probably compete next year? Arizona. Like, and who has the starting pitching that Arizona Diamondbacks probably want if they're going to trade Cotel Marte? It's the Seattle Mariners because, again, Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, and Emerson Hancock should all be on the table.

It just makes some deal of sense, certainly not any less sense than some of the other names we've talked about. So again, I'm not saying they are going to trade for him. I'm not saying that they're even going to have conversations about him. But we as a community who have talked about Mason Miller basically every week for the last month, who, by the way, is it tied with Arizona, exact same record, exact same circumstance, but we're willing to talk about Basin Miller, but we're not willing to talk about Cotel Marte. I don't know.

That seems kind of crazy to me, and we've talked about Arizona. Like, they have bullpen pieces too. So, you know, again, I just think that it's kind of crazy that we've been searching and we've talked about Wilson Contreras, like he doesn't have some clubhouse issues and whatnot. We've talked about, you know, some people want us to talk about O'Raldus Chapman. Like, you want to talk about nuts.

Aualdis Chapman is. nuts. We talked about Mason Miller and, you know, we get tradeoffers sometimes for Fernando Tatis Jr. and Ronald, I haven't seen one all year for Catelle Marte. It's a little weird to me. So unless I'm, unless I miss something, all the like rationale for, oh, well, this is preventing it, this is preventing, this is preventing it. It applies to basically every other player we've talked about. So I don't know what I'm missing here, but we should really be at least for the time being, we should at least consider Catelle Marte as a possibility that is worth exploring. All right.
