That is what we've all been waiting for from the 234 in this Mariners lineup.
Colby, hit it.
You are locked on Mariners.
Your daily Seattle Mariners podcast.
Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Ahoy, sailors, it is Wednesday, April 22nd, 2026.
My name is Tadding Gisalas, and I'm joined as always by my co-coes Colby Patnode.
Mariners walk off the A's 5 to 4 this afternoon at T-Mobile Park.
They salvage a game from this otherwise annoying series.
And they did it despite getting just four innings from Logan Gilbert and a blown save from Andres Munoz.
We'll touch on some of that today, but the Mariners also have an off day tomorrow where we can get into more of that as well on the show.
But Colby, we got to start here with the Mariners 2, 3, 4 in their lineup.
Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodriguez and Josh Naylor go a combined eight for 15 in this one.
Naylor's third hit of the day gives the Mariners to win.
And it was the two guys before him, Cal and Julio, who made it all possible with back-to-back singles after J.P. Crawford hit into a double play.
to start the ninth.
That right there is what we've been waiting to see from that stack.
Yeah, and I mean, to be fair, we saw it all series.
All three of these guys had very good series against the A's,
Cal homered in all three games.
I think Culeo either had multiple hits or reach-based multiple times
in all three games of the series.
And obviously, Josh Naylor had a very good series as well,
I think with three doubles mixed into his hit total.
So, yeah, it's exactly what you were hoping to see.
All season, obviously, you know, it was rough in the first couple weeks when all three of these guys were just terrible.
But Julio's been very good now for about three weeks.
Just not a ton of power yet.
But he's been very good.
He's sitting over 300.
His on base percentage is over 400 since what?
The end of the Yankee series, I believe.
Yeah.
So again, just not quite enough power yet.
But we know that'll come.
We know that he hasn't lost power.
But he's hitting for a very high average getting on base a ton.
Cal.
Again, Homer.
And he's smoking the ball.
It's just it's not resulting in slug yet.
It's not quite getting to the pole side in the air, which as we know is how you know,
Julio is hot when he's really getting pole side.
Cal is homered in three straight games and all that.
And obviously Josh Naylor from what Ben Renner, I believe, tweeted it out since the two home run game.
I don't know if this is including the two home run game or not.
But it just since that game, Josh Naylor has a WRC plus of 166.
which has jumped his season long WRC plus,
I think into the 70s,
which considering it was like 15 a week ago,
is pretty impressive.
So, but there's,
you know,
the ninth inning today is exactly what you were kind of thinking this would be.
Now,
again,
you'd probably like one of these three guys to hit a double
because you do need them to do damage in that spot,
but who cares?
They bunched up hits together,
which they kind of did today all day today.
the offense overall was, I mean, probably should have scored eight or nine runs in this one.
They had 14 hits.
They had a 53% hard hit rate.
But unfortunately, they had to settle for one run in five separate innings because they couldn't get the big hit.
They had a couple sacrifice flies.
They had a fielder's choice.
So, you know, again, they manufactured some runs and still almost lost the game because they couldn't get the hit with guys in base on base, mostly the extra base hit.
But whatever, they won.
But this note from Daniel Kramer is pretty interesting.
This is the third time, just the third time this year,
that Cal, Julio, and Josh Naylor have all had a hit in the same inning.
So today in the ninth inning, the first inning on April 13th,
the first inning on April 20th in the ninth inning today.
So yes, those three guys, very good all series.
Obviously, they keyed up or they were the key to today's win.
Unfortunately, the last two nights, they didn't really get any help from the top of the order
or from, you know, the guys sitting directly behind them.
But today that was not the case.
JP had multiple hits.
Randy had multiple hits.
Again, they were just like one well-placed base hit with runners on base today
from just blowing out the A's and smoking them and having probably their best
offensive day of the year.
But unfortunately, they didn't find, they couldn't find that hit, but they did, you know,
scratch out five runs on 14 hits, which is just a wild thing to say.
Yeah.
Only the one homer, three doubles, so 11 singles and some three outs that resulted directly in a run being scored.
Again, you want hits there, so you're not quite there.
But 2, 3, 4 have been very good now for, I mean, Josh for a couple weeks, although Josh was great in this series.
He was okay against Texas.
Well, that one game against Texas.
And so, yeah, Josh is still a little up and down.
Julio's been very consistent.
And it looks like cows swing just looks much better.
It looks like he's on time.
He's recognizing spin much better now.
You know, and I, he hit one right-handed yesterday.
That's a good sign as well.
So it does look like Cal is more or less back.
And back to what?
I'm 2026 or 2025 Cal Raleigh.
No, we'll probably never see that Cal Raleigh again.
But, you know, right now he's on-paced at 30 home runs,
which is kind of what we have come to expect from Cal with the exception of last year.
and he's almost at 100 WRC plus,
which again, considering how he started
and how deep into April he went with like a sub 50,
pretty, pretty good.
But yeah, Julio and just racking up hits right now,
he's got an on-base percentage of over 400 since that Yankee series.
So he's been very good for a while now.
And once he starts getting pole side,
if he can maintain kind of, you know, collecting these hits
and sprinkling in an extra base hit every other day,
you know, or once every four-out bats, whatever it is,
then he's going to be very, very dangerous.
And this lineup will be very dangerous.
But today, very good offensive line of just, again,
one hit short of really exploding,
but good enough to get a win that the Mariners desperately needed.
Yeah, so Julio up to a 95 WRC plus on the season,
Cal Raleigh up to a 94 WRC plus on the season,
and then Josh Naylor up to a 61 WRC plus.
So not in the 70s just yet,
but he's starting to climb up there a little bit.
So, yeah, you know, and we saw this offense pick up the pitching a little bit.
You know, obviously Logan Gilbert only goes four in this one.
That puts a lot on the shoulders of the Smyreras bullpen, which actually, you know,
which actually performed pretty, pretty well today outside of the, the Munoz, you know, blown save.
You know, Ferrer give up a couple of hits, walked a guy, but struck out two and two
innings of work.
Matt Brash with a clean inning.
and then Cooper Chriswell with a clean inning
got a strike out there in the eighth inning,
big eighth inning from him pitching in a spot
that he's typically not going to pitch in
for the Mariners.
Would have been interesting to see
what would have happened had the Mariners
not walked it off there in the ninth inning.
It looked like it was going to be Alex Hoppe making his major league
debut in a high leverage spot.
I believe with Tyler Soderstrom
coming to the plate.
Yeah, yeah.
Not ideal for the
future former friend of the show
who literally
in every essence of the word
sorry of every essence of the word
big league dust literally
literally literally literally
the actual definition of big league does
happened
because he got called up to the big leagues
yeah yeah so funny story if you miss it
I did explain this on
my short when I talked about
Hoppe getting the call and I also tweeted
this out yesterday but yeah
Yesterday morning, I was supposed to interview Alex for yesterday's episode of LockdownMs.
And then I got a text from his agent about like an hour before we were supposed to do it saying like, hey, Alex needs to reschedule.
Understandably so.
Because yeah, he's on a flight to Seattle this morning.
All right.
So we will talk more a little bit about the mayor's offense and touch on Logan Gilbert's struggles today in just a moment.

This was a huge win for the Marys
for a multitude of reasons.
I mean, obviously, you know,
to stop the bleeding,
first and foremost of the last two games
against the A's
and to not get swept
and fall into an early,
you know, 03 hole
against them in the season series,
but also, again,
for your 2, 3, 4 to lead the charge
for the biggest names
in your lineup to essentially
win you a ball game single-handedly.
Now they did get some help
throughout the lineup. Obviously,
you know, Randy had a two-hit day. J.P. had a
two-hit day. Tons of hard
contact throughout the entire lineup.
You know, Cole Young, I feel bad for the guy
had his sixth game hitting streak snapped
despite having three hard hit balls, went 04
in this one. You know, JP,
the double play that he hit into was
was 104 off of the bat.
So, you know, some bad.
luck there as well.
But we got to talk about it.
Finally, a Dan Wilson
pinch hitting decision actually
led to something positive for the
mirrors to pinch hitting decisions
led to something positive for the mares.
Almost cost them the game simultaneously.
So, I mean, look,
it worked when it had to, so we're going to give me a pass
on that one. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I will
stay, though, still, I don't like
pinch hitting for Domkan zone.
Let him hit against lefties,
especially trash ones from AAA.
Now again, it worked.
So I'm not going to complain too much.
It worked.
And it was interesting that they, that, and I get it's probably because of the, you know,
Rayleigh was the DH today.
Yeah, I get it.
But like it was, it was interesting that, that Dan went to Garver instead of Rough Snyder first.
And, you know, that worked out.
Garver hits the double second and third.
Ref Snyder hits the sacrifice fly.
But yeah, just, you know, a little interesting there, though, that it was Garver instead
of Rough Snyder for Ray.
I thought you should have hit Ref Snyder for.
or Rayleigh, if you're going to make that change, fine.
Do refsnyder there.
Obviously, Garber was an interesting choice, but he hit a double.
So, you know, fine, whatever.
And then they doubled down with, uh, with Russ Snyder for Canzone, which may have
ended up actually having a dual purpose or a dual upgrade because.
Yeah.
Not only does Russ Snyder hit the game winning or the game tying sacrifice fly.
He makes what possibly could have been a game winning catch in right field to start that
ninth inning because he doesn't catch that ball.
The managers are down by one.
then who knows how things play out differently there.
So, you know, Rob Reff Snyder, he's played like 12 innings in the field this year.
And he's probably say, he's probably at like a plus four defensive run saved.
Who knew that Rob Reff Snyder's biggest contributions through the first month of the season would be with the glove.
Yeah, it really is insane.
Yeah.
And, you know, Ruff Snyder's starting out better at bats.
He's still missing.
Yeah.
The sack fly was 101 and a half off the bat.
So.
Right.
he's he hits a lot of pop-ups or that's what he's doing right now he's sitting a lot of
you know very high so they have high access velos but they're going straight up in the air
and the batting average on those is like 10 yeah the batting average on a strikeout is zero so
they're essentially strikeouts yeah and so while refsner doesn't have a big strikeout problem
although he's never been great at avoiding them uh he you add in the the infield flies and
all that and it's basically a ton of like non-competitive at bats but he's seen a ton of pitches
is he is hitting the ball harder.
Fun fact, I've seen both of Rob Reff Snyder's
hit live.
Like you need to go to the ballpark a little bit more often than.
Which, by the way, is also not that fun of a fact
when you really think about it because,
no. The fact that I've seen both
of them, and it's April 22nd.
You know what else is a fun fact
that's not actually that fun, but they mentioned it on the
broadcast before Mitch Carver's devil,
Marin's pinch hitters were 0 for 20.
Yeah.
I
yikes
I think Mitch Garver
has been very good
at the role
like obviously he's not going to hit a ton
we know that
but he's a backup catcher
what backup catcher does
in most situations
who honestly is significantly better
at challenging pitches
than Cal Raleigh
he's been amazing at that actually yeah
he missed one he had he had his
first miss last night and it was
point one
it was point one off and it was a two and two
count with the base's
loaded with Cole Wilcox out there and they were already down by three.
And so it's like I got two challenges.
I might as well take a shot because I don't want to go three and two with Cole
Wilcox out there.
He had one or well, he didn't challenge it.
Again, I was at the game.
I was sitting behind home plate last night, snuck away.
Should have gone to today's game instead.
But there was one.
I can't remember who it was.
It might have been Lang Lears.
It was already though.
And he challenged a pitch like in the sixth or the seventh inning or whatever.
And Garber was like, he saw the challenge and he just stood up and he walked.
And he was about halfway to three quarters of the way to the dugout before it even popped up on the screen.
He didn't break stride once.
Like he's like that's and it wasn't like it was, it wasn't one of those ones where the ball was entirely in the zone either.
It was one of like the ball clip the strike zone.
And he's like, okay.
I'm not wasting my time, sit squatting when I don't have to.
And I mean, he's been great at the challenging things and all that.
he's thrown out a couple runners.
Like Garber as a backup catcher is one of the things that's worked consistently.
Unfortunately, it's a backup catcher.
There's only so much value that brings.
But yeah, like Garber is.
Especially when you have one of the best catchers in the league,
if that the best catcher in the league.
So like Garver's been solid, certainly, especially behind the plate.
And, you know, contribute obviously today.
Big, not an RBI, but a big, you know, double to set up.
What would be the game tying sack fly?
So, yeah, I mean, Garber's been totally fine.
Ref Snyder's starting to get there.
It looks like he's getting, he's inching closer and closer as well.
Canzone.
We just know who Dom is.
He's streaky.
He's going to have terrible at bats.
And then his next app bat, he might hit one 450 feet.
Yeah.
I mean, that's just who he is.
Same with Luke Rayleigh.
He's a lot of the right field wall.
Yeah.
Same with Luke Rayleigh.
You know, he's just streaky.
That's how it's going to be, which is why it's really important to, you know, have
Julio and J.
Or Julio and J.P. and Randy and Cal and some of these guys who are a little less
streaky. It's really important. Because Luke
Rayleigh being the engine of the offense,
that's not sustainable. That's asking
for trouble because you're all,
you never know when that day's going to come where he's
going to start going on a one for 23 with
12 strikeout run. And you deal with it because
when he's hot, he's great. So,
yeah, but you need some more consistency
in this lineup. And JP's been
much better. He's been very good
out of the lead off spot.
You know, Randy's been very
good. He's had a couple of bad games
here and there, but overall been very good.
And obviously, Julio's been very good for the last two weeks, maybe three as well.
And, you know, Cal and Naylor starting to figure it out.
Dom had a pretty good homestand as well.
So there are some positives here, you know, regardless of the results of it.
And Cole Young continues to hit the ball very hard consistently as well.
But, yeah, this was a weird kind of series and a series that they needed to find a way to salvage a win.
but we also, I think we would have to mention the two crazy things that we saw.
By the way, Cole Young had a great play today.
We saw two insane things happen that I've never seen before.
I think one of them has definitely happened before, but I hadn't seen it.
Last night, Shayling Lears hit the roof at T-Mobile Park.
And he was not the only one that got close.
There were a lot of wall scrapers out there, but he's actually hit the roof.
which I did not know the ground rule of.
And then obviously today there was another ruling that fans may not have liked,
but that's the correct ruling.
So sorry.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I definitely crashed out over it.
Because it feels like one of those things.
It's like,
of course.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Of course.
Yeah.
Yeah.
No, that's why it was.
I was like,
well,
yeah,
I understand the rule.
But like,
really,
really?
Like we just can't catch a break.
Of all the things like that, you know,
could happen to this team right now.
All the things that they need right now.
Like that really.
Yeah.
So you're obviously referencing Logan Givert.
A line drive catching Logan.
Taking, you know, 108 to his chest.
Apparently he's got a nice little bruise.
Also I have to kind of wonder how maybe that was impacted him over the course of a start as well.
He was in some discomfort.
Yeah.
He also got cut up.
He had some blood on his shirt.
But yeah, his jersey caught the ball.
And the rule is the ball.
the ball is out of play and because it was in play and then went out of play quote unquote
that is a hit yeah the good news is for the mariners in that case is that only like the force
outs that would apply get to advance so the runner on third did not get you know he scored anyways
but yeah just a weird thing just a weird series overall for a very weird team I I don't know
it'd be weirder if it wasn't the mariners but here we are
But yeah, so let's talk a little bit about Logan.
We'll talk about him some more tomorrow.
We're going to talk about the pitching on tomorrow's episode.
But yeah, only goes four.
So another regressive start for Logan after he was finally able to go seven,
I guess the Astros, a couple of starts ago.
Just really disappointed.
And again, you know, who knows what he was dealing with after, you know,
taking that line drive to the chess.
But still, you know, he just throws a billion.
in pitches to only get through four in this one, gives up a couple of runs to start the game.
It just, it's bad.
It's a problem.
Yeah.
Certainly him not going deep into games is the problem here.
Because, like, in general, like, you know, his, like, ERA is fine and all that.
And obviously, we know at the end of the year he'll have a ton of strikeouts and blah, blah, blah.
But, yeah, he's supposed to be your ace.
he's supposed to be a guy who goes deep into games.
He's done it twice this year on back-to-back starts.
And then the last two starts, he essentially the five-and-fly guy that we saw all of last year.
And it was just one of those days.
It didn't seem like there were a ton of long at bats against them,
but there was traffic every inning against him.
He did manage 14 whiffs, which again, swing and miss is not Logan Gilbert's problem.
Strikeouts are not Logan Gilbert's problems, although today he only had three.
but yeah it's just you got to you got to find a way man like you have to be better than this
and quite frankly over the last what 40 starts give or take now Logan Gilbert's cost himself
some money in free agency and it may be even a possible extension with the Mariners because
if you're the Mariners right now you're not paying Logan Gilbert heck not Dylan cease money
no which is definitely what he's going to be looking for yeah which again I'm not saying
he shouldn't be looking for but if you're the mariners you're not taking that risk because logan
gilbert's a risk now which before he wasn't so again it's it's still it's only april you know he's
got five more months uh to to really change that around and and we've already seen him do it a couple
times so it's definitely still a possibility for him but he just you know he's kind of becoming a
little bit consistently mediocre to really trust all that much so i mean like i think that's the
best way to describe Logan. He's mediocre
right now. Sometimes he's really
good. Other times he's not, but mostly
he's just fine.
Yeah. Well, and again,
it has a huge
trickle-down effect. Now,
thankfully they have the off day tomorrow so
the bullpen can kind of reset, but I mean,
look at the position that the bullpen
found itself in today
and could have been in had the mayor has not
walk things off, and a big reason for that is because
Logan only went for. Right. The rotation
set up the situation where Cooper Chriswell was pitching the 8th and Alex Hoppe was going to be pitching the 10th.
The rotation had been setting that up all series, really, but Logan today only being able to go four really crystallized it.
And yeah, it's a problem.
And it is one that we're going to talk about tomorrow because there are some things in the bullpen that need to be talked about.
And also the rotation does have a, you know, a hand in that.
Now, there were a couple of plays that added to,
Logan's pitch count today. I mean, JP overthrew one, Julio, Ferrer was pitching on the one he slid in and missed,
but he had an error also that didn't really end up mattering all that much. And then there was one that
Leo Revis, a ball that he probably should have come up with that he didn't, that I believe ended up
scoring a run. So, you know, again, the defense wasn't good today behind Logan, but this is just
what's the difference? He gives you five instead of four. That's still not a very good result. So
Logan's a bit of a problem right now.
And until further notice, he's at best your number four starter.
Yeah, I mean, I mean, yeah, the, you know, the marries rotation overall has been pretty darn good to start the season.
The issue, though, is that your two worst starters of the five have been Logan Gilbert and Luis Castillo.
They're pitching back to back and not getting deep into games.
So, yeah, and then obviously in this last outing, Emerson Hancock could only go
five. So there's a trickle-down effect there to your bullpen. And your bullpins, you know,
kind of a work in progress. We'll dive into the numbers a little more tomorrow because I do think
there's a conversation to be had. Overall, the pitching's been relatively good, but I think you
dig under the hood a little bit here. There are some areas where they need to improve and pretty
quick. Again, I wouldn't call them areas of concern quite yet, but there's some bubbling
tension, let's call it,
underneath the surface of
the Mariners pitching staff as a whole,
including the bullpen and the rotation.
Yeah.
Well, good win, nonetheless,
despite the, you know, the rough start from Logan.
Really nice to see the offense pick up the pitching here
and the 2,34 really, really get it going.
And hopefully they can take that momentum onto this road trip
where they're going to be facing, you know,
a Cardinals team and a twins team that have gotten off to
surprisingly pretty solid.
it starts. So that's going to do it for our show. Thank you so much for joining us here on the
