So with that said, let's get into our show today here on Lockdown Mariners.
We're going to be doing an idea that one of our listeners, Drew, sent our way last week on Twitter, where Colby and I will be looking at each of the Mariners rosters from 1996 all the way through 2021.
and selecting one player apiece from each roster to make our own All Mariners 26-man rosters.
So some guidelines for this draft that we're going to be doing.
The player you select will be that specific version of the player.
So if Colby, for example, selects 1996 King Griffey Jr., he's getting 1996 Griffey production and just that.
So once that player is taken, all versions of them are now off the board.
So you cannot select 1997
for example.
So that should make for some
interesting strategies
if one of us is to say
hold out for a better version of a specific
player. And we'll be drafting
in a snake format. So I'll be
picking first. Then Colby gets back-to-back
picks at two and three. Then I go four and five
and so on and so forth.
We have done
absolutely no research or strategizing
ahead of this. So
this should be interesting to say the least it also might take a couple of episodes to complete but
it should be fun and that's ultimately the goal here so if this is your first time joining us
welcome to the show if you like what you hear give us a follow or subscribe wherever you
listen to this we'd greatly appreciate it colby you're ready to get going sure um i thought
though i would say i thought that if you took like i thought we could both take a griffy we just
going to take the same year, Griffey.
Like, I thought that was what we were doing. Do you want to switch it like that? Do you want to switch
it up like that? I mean, it seems like it could be like an unfair advantage if one of us has a
Griffey and the other one doesn't. Uh, because this is going to get really lean in like the
2000 and tens. Like there's going to be quite a few. Uh, so either way. I'm fine either way.
It's up to you. Just wanted to clarify that before we got started.
That. We could do that.
We can do it like that.
All right.
So switching the rules a little bit.
One of us can take one version of a player.
Both of us can take one version of a player over the course of the draft.
But no double picking guys.
Right.
You can't have, you can't get 96 Griffey and 99 Griffey.
You get one griffy.
But each of us can have one griffy.
Yes.
Okay.
Indeed.
Indeed.
All right.
So we are starting off with a banger, 1996.
Let's look at this roster here.
I got to make my first pick.
I, ooh, man, this is tough.
I'm going to go, I'm going to go A-Rod.
You son of a, oops.
I will have to edit that out.
Sorry.
Apologies.
Put the dolphin sound effect over it.
Yeah, that's probably the best way.
go.
So I guess the good news is.
Yes.
Right.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
So I guess the good news is you can't take any of the other A rods.
So.
Yes.
It feels obvious that I will take an A rod at some point, but I just can't take the 96
version of him, which is maybe the best version.
Pretty close at least.
So then for 96, I will take, you know what, I'm going to surprise some people here.
I think, but this is all part of the roster
build fun. Okay, I'm
actually going to take 1996
Jay Buehner, yes.
Wow, yeah.
So I'm going to take
I kind of thought about it.
It's just,
but I don't know how like rigid we want to be
with the rules like
like can any outfield or just play
any position or does it have to be his primary?
You know, like can I put Buehner in left field
or does it have to be right field?
You can do whatever you want.
Just like,
the consequences if you're playing them out of position.
Sure, which I mean, whatever.
But just real fast here.
I think the AROB choice is obvious.
I'm going Buneer in 96.
Because in 1996, he had 271, 369, 557 with 44 dingers.
And that's something that is honestly pretty close to what Griffey did.
And I am going to be able to get a Griffey later that I like
because there's two great Griffey seasons coming up.
and you can only get one of them.
So I know I'm going to get the other one.
So I'm going to take Griffey or sorry,
Buhner in 96.
And in 1997 with my wraparound pick,
I'm going to take Randy Johnson.
Nice.
All right.
Interesting.
It was like an easy answer here for you, Ty.
The first one should.
Yeah.
Yeah, 97.
I'm going to go Griffey.
yeah um yeah that's the easy call yeah arguably his best season
yeah it's a fantastic year i mean like look at these listen to these numbers here he's slashed
304 382 646 he had 56 home runs like so what you're saying is he was hashtag good
yeah i would say he was pretty decent that year
um jeez you you really passed up on that all right
i mean i get it randy but whoof that is a
that is a hell of a year
don't don't you worry about me
all right your 1998 pick
all right nineteen ninety eight pick
do i stick with the offense
i mean
there's some good options offensively but you've
taken two of them.
Yeah.
But I feel like there's a pretty easy answer to this.
Yeah, Gar.
Yeah.
His 98 was insane.
Yeah, 322, 429, 565.
He had 29 home runs, 102.
46 doubles.
46 doubles.
Yeah.
106 walks to 96 strikeouts.
Yeah.
Yeah, I'm going to go, I'm going to go, Edgar Martinez in 1998.
excellent choice
yeah
yeah so 98
99
I'm going 98 Griffey
um
he also
in 1998
grippy hit 285
284 365 611
with 56 stingers
and 20 stolen bases
by the way
so yeah
98 for me is Griffey
this is why I passed on Griffey in 96
because I knew I was either going to get 97
Griffey or 98 Griffey
I knew you're going to take Griffey in 97 or 98.
So not that much of a decision here.
99 was not a good year for a lot of,
a lot of mariners.
A little bit better than I remember record-wise,
but 99 was kind of the start of the fallback.
However, I do have some options here for 99.
like a sneaky
see the interesting thing with 99 is that
Edgar right
hurt had a bit of a down year and I say that
seeing him hit 337 447
554 so yeah Edgar not that great
only 24 home runs that year so
the pitching staff
yeah a little bit
Randy Johnson was hurt
and then trade it.
So this is kind of the last year
that Ty can take Randy Johnson,
which is why I took him in 97.
So not an obvious pitching
pitcher to take here.
Yeah.
So yeah, so this one's pretty interesting here.
I'm going to go ahead, though,
and I'm, let's see, he was hurt.
Do I want to try and save this guy?
Let me check the 2000 season real fast
to see how tricky I want to get here.
Trying to get a lot.
a little sneaky, huh?
Yeah.
Because here's, like, I'll just be honest with you, right?
I really want to take 2000 Edgar.
And since you've already taken Edgar, I can do that.
Like, you can't take Edgar.
Right.
However, 2000 is also the last year I can take,
I can take A-Rod if I want to take 2000 Edgar.
And 2000 A-Rod was like insane.
like he was like I mean obviously it led to the huge contract and all that stuff so I think I'm going to I'm going to settle a little bit here for for 2009 Edgar and then obviously with my next pick I will be taking a rod 2000 version since you cannot take him with 99 or 2000 so who's your pick?
for 1999.
Yeah, there's not.
Yeah, especially with
the picks that I've made.
Like,
I don't know, Jamie Moyer, maybe?
Uh, I don't know.
It's,
I think
I don't know, should I go with a
oddball one?
Yeah, there wasn't,
weren't too many good relievers this year either.
Pitching was terrible that year.
Yeah.
Like I'm not,
I'm not really looking to spend a pick on Paul Abbott.
Yeah,
Bioner wasn't good this year and he was hurt.
Like,
David Sagi was pretty good.
Yeah,
but he only played 90 games.
Yeah,
352.
Yeah.
you already took a Griffey
have a great year.
Yeah.
You already took a Griffey.
You already took an Arod.
You already took an Edgar.
So those are pretty much the three guys who had good years that year.
All right.
I think I'm just going to get Jamie Moyer here.
And I mean, because he threw like almost 230 innings and had a sub four ERA, sub four FIP, barely.
Yeah.
Yeah.
that makes that probably makes the most sense for my rotation so you're going to take
solid 80s later yeah yeah yeah mid rotation arm still at that point so yeah yeah all right 2000
now you can go back to having some fun yeah so we are going to be uh looking at the turn of the
century in just a moment but real quick a reminder of this episode of locked on mariners is

mariners thank you again for making us your first listen of the day
we are going to be continuing our 1996 through the 2021
all mariners draft with my pick for the 2000 season
man all right so i just picked jami moyer
1999 version.
Now I got to decide what I want to do here.
And honestly, I think I actually know what I want to do.
I am going to be taking
2000 John Allerud.
Ooh.
I like that.
Sacrificing a little bit of power.
But, I mean, what a hitter.
Yeah.
And defender.
Yeah, absolutely.
John Allerud.
Sick.
super underrated by mirrorers fans.
Looking back on those teams.
Honestly, the dude deserved more Hall of Fame.
The guy deserved more Hall of Fame love,
if we're being honest.
Like, he was really good.
Yeah, he was,
he was fantastic.
He was a lot of fun to watch.
He had a 58.2 career B-war.
Like, I really don't think people understand how good John Olerut was.
295, 395, 465 career slash, like.
We're from New York.
he uh in his first year with the mariners that's this year that we're talking about 285 392 439 he had 45 doubles
yeah 103 runs batted in that's he was even better in 2001 to 2002 like john or rude was just
insane uh very underrated player um all right so i already said my 2000 pick was going to be a rod
this is last year i can take him so i'm going to do that it also happens to be his best year um
So you are taking Olerud.
And I'm taking A-Rod.
Now, O-1, again, this gets fun because I feel like the easy answer here is Eichero, like MEPP, rookie of the year.
But, I mean, you look at the other guys who, I mean, just like, everybody, Brett Boone.
They're all really good.
I mean, yeah, Brett Boone, John Olerud, Edgar was fantastic, although I've already taken it.
Mike Cameron.
was really, really good.
The center field defense, obviously you have Jamie Moyer and Freddie Garcia,
Mark McLemore is a utility guy.
Low-key, decent idea.
Aaron Seeley had a really, you know, solid year.
Yeah.
Definitely not Paul out.
I could take Kazu or Arthur Rhodes or Jeff Nelson.
Or you could take your boy Al Martin.
Or I could not.
So this is where this is going to be a bit of,
a risk because Ty I'm going to allow you to have each euro.
Wow.
Yes, because I'm going to take Brett Boone, 2001 Brett Boone.
Darn it.
Who was, is that who you wanted?
That's who I was going to take.
I'm taking Brett Boone to lock down second base.
And now I have A-Rod at shortstop and Brett Boone at second.
I, yeah.
So you can have each, I'm assuming you're taking each year, right?
well I guess I have to settle for each row one of the best seasons we've ever seen
you're settling for each row as your right fielder so oh one there were a lot like man oh one was
yeah that team man stacked beyond believe that team that thing was all right they really
needed a left builder and a number one starter and they can you imagine if they had gotten Juan
Gonzalez and if they had traded for like it was oh
I don't even know
who the best starting pitcher was
available at that trade deadline.
But if they had acquired those two,
they would have been the best team of all time.
They needed those two pieces
and ownership just would not allow them to go get them.
That's a real show.
Anyways, 2002.
All right, 2002.
Not as great of a year.
Just when looking at these.
Sure.
I mean, still a really good year.
I mean, they won 90 plus games, but,
um,
hmm,
there's a couple options here that I'm,
I'm pretty intrigued by.
Joel Panero.
Um,
and then I could go bullpen here.
Yeah.
So a really good bullpen.
Yeah.
Because I've already taken all of route.
I've already taken,
uh,
each row.
Um,
Cammy didn't have a great year this year.
Um,
um,
maybe Mark McLemore
is a sneaky pick here.
Could be.
I think I want to wait until 03 on Boone
because Boone, didn't Boone have a really good
03? Yes.
Yeah, he did.
Yeah.
So I think I'm going to go
Just say Jeff Serlo
Joe on.
Gross.
I'm going to go Joel Pinniero.
Really?
I mean, I know he was really good.
Don't get you wrong, but.
Joe Pinero over Freddie Garcia.
Like I know Garcia didn't have a great year that year, but okay.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
I'm trying to add to the back of my rotation.
Sure.
I'm trying to work from the back up because, yeah, I feel like there aren't.
Like, yeah.
You know you're going to get Felix.
Kuma, you know.
Yeah.
Yeah, there's going to be a bunch of guys, yeah, later down the line.
So.
Yeah, maybe even Logan Gilbert.
for Marco Gonzalez
2020.
Like,
yeah.
All right.
So
back to backs,
which is
fun,
but like you said,
this year,
not exactly,
like I could take
Ichiro,
who was very good.
Don't get me wrong.
But
definitely a step back
from where he was
as a rookie.
I say as he hit 321 with a 388 on base.
So again, maybe surprise some people here,
but I'm going to take for 2020, sorry,
202, I'm going to take Kazahiro Sasaki.
Nice.
Like it.
To kind of anchor my bullpen here.
And then in 2003,
you know, it feels weird to leave Icho on the table and take Sasaki over him.
But, I mean, I think you guys can probably see where I'm going to land my Ichero.
I'm going to go ahead and in 2003 has some interesting.
John Ulru, like I missed the Uluruud Prime.
So I have to look elsewhere for my first basement.
I already have Brett Boone.
I think Mark McLemore had a down year.
I could take Jamie Moyer, who was great,
121 games, 215 innings, 327 R.A, 4.1-5.
I could do that.
I could take Arthur Rhodes.
I could take Shigatosea Asagawa and really anchor the back into my bullpen.
But instead what I'm going to do is I'm going to piss off tie,
and I'm going to take Mike Cameron
Nice
For 2020
I keep doing that
2003 so
Ty
he is off the board
So
Who you're taking
All right
My outfit is complete by the way
Yeah
I am going to be taken
Brett Boone in 2003
Yep
And as for 2004
You're going to have to wait
To find that out in just a moment
Because real quick
We're going to remind you

So we are going to try to get in as many picks as we can within the next 10 or so minutes
and continue this thing tomorrow.
So 2004, who am I picking?
That is the question of the day.
And, man, there is, I mean, not a...
Well, sneaky, sneaky good pick, Rauli Banya's.
Well, that's really good.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's who I'm probably going with, to be quite honest with you.
Yeah, I'm going to go Raoul, Raoul.
Raoulie Bonyas.
That is great.
I'm going to go with the guy who set the all-time single-season hits record.
Each year-o.
Oh, Rithaeralia?
good one
which by the way
now gives me
an outfield
of Jay Booner
Ken Griffey Jr.
Mike Cameron
and Ichero
so
yeah I'm feeling good
about that
now we kind of
start getting to the
well I mean
2004 was
was the beginning
of the dark ages
but 2005
yeah
we're really in the dark ages now
yeah
this
so this is interesting
Randy win
I really
Now the
Now the fun portion
of the draft is over
Now we get to be sad for
Probably the rest of this episode
And next episode
We get to be very sad
So
So this one is tough
And it's going to be
I don't know
This will be a surprise to anybody
But it's
Because neither of us can take
Each Euro
Right
Like he's done
You can take
another version of Ichero. I could take
a Moyer, but
he wasn't fantastic. He was okay.
I kind of want to take Randy Wynn because
I love Randy Wynn, and I feel like he's very underrated.
But at the end of the day, I need
to start filling out my infield,
and Richie Sexton had an incredible
2005 season. So I'm going to take Richie
Sexton to be my first baseman.
Nice.
All right.
Um,
2005.
Ugh.
You can take young Felix,
but you,
you probably want to save it for when he's good Felix.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I don't think I'm going to be doing that.
Uh,
wow,
I can draft Eddie Gordado.
Actually,
you could.
I think I'm going to.
Right.
I think I'm going to draft Eddie.
Yeah.
I think I'm going to,
I'm going to draft Eddie Cordato.
I think that's the right.
I think that's the right call.
It's really a bummer that Belker.
that Beltray was so, like, bad for the Mariners.
Because, I mean, who doesn't love Adrian Beltray?
And he wasn't even, he wasn't like terrible.
But like, I get a 3.2 B war in 2005.
But it's also kind of a bummer.
Neither of us took Randy Wynn.
But, you know, them's the breaks.
Randy Wend was six.
Yeah, Randy Wynne was six.
So good.
He was so good.
All right.
So 2006.
Hmm.
Uh, all right.
So I could go, go Ritchie here.
Good.
Ooh, Kenji Jojava.
Ooh, with how bad catcher is, that's, yeah.
Yeah.
Catcher gets pretty bleak pretty fast, so that's not a bad one.
Maybe the play.
JJ Putz was really good here too.
Oh, yeah, he was.
You don't want Jared Washburn?
Jared Washburn, the fun note on Jared Washburn, he started the last
Mariners game I ever went to at Safeco Field.
Interesting.
Use the word fun.
Yeah. Well, I mean that
sarcastically.
Because it's not very fun for me.
All right. So Richie, Kenji, or JJ.
Ooh.
Hold on. I'm going to cheat a little bit and go on to
2007 here real quick and see.
See who you're going to double up on?
Yeah.
Yeah, I'm going to go JJ Putz here.
Interesting.
Okay, starting to build that back in.
Yeah.
Well, I get.
I get back back here.
Unless you're taking somebody I've already taken.
All right.
No, no, no.
I got confused about the order.
That was my bad.
Yeah.
It's a good thing we're writing this down.
That's all I'm saying.
Yeah.
So this time I'm going to take the really the best year Adrian Belchray had and stick him at third base.
In 2006, he hit 268, 328, 465, 39 doubles, 25 homers.
Still a shell of what he would become, but he was a five-win player that year.
And obviously the defense is great.
This now gives me a starting infield of Adrian Beltrae, Alex Rodriguez, Brett Boone, and Richie Sexton.
So my offense is basically done, minus a few bench pieces.
So it's going to be pretty pitching heavy for me, which is actually going to help tie because now you can load up on quite a few bats if he wants.
So it's all part of the strategy coming, you know, for those vaunted 2009, 2010, 2011 Seattle Mariners' offenses.
Just saying.
All right.
so now we're on to 2007 and yikes
particularly when you
you're low on pitching in 2007
but I'm going to go ahead
that's what I'm going to do I'm going to go ahead
I'm going to take JJ puts
1380 RA 267 FIP like
and the rest of this team
especially pitching
pitching wise this is really bad and I
I have to start adding some pitching.
So Ty, you're up, 2007.
All right.
So these should probably be our, oh, yeah.
I love Jose again.
Yeah.
These should probably be our last couple picks here.
All right.
So I'm going to go, ooh, I'm going to go Kenji.
I'm going to go Kenji.
That's a good call.
Yeah.
all right so kindu jojima 2007 let's go to 2008 here and see what i want to do with this
this was the uh the john mcclaren jim wriggleman year
yikes um man there is not a lot to pick from this was the year that
josea lopez went to all sorry i'm right yeah and ryan roland smith was the
sixth best mariner according to B. War.
You could take legend
Eric Bedard.
Willie Blumquist.
So I'm going to give you some free advice
here, Ty. Take Beltray.
I should probably do that, right?
I should probably do that.
I mean, you could also take Abagnas.
He was very good.
I took Abanias already in 2004.
Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Yep.
Yeah. I don't see anything else.
That's getting me excited here.
So I'm going to go Adrian Beltray 2008.
So it's interesting.
We basically have the same infield,
except for you have Olerud and I have Sexton,
but we both have Beltray at third, A rod at short,
Boone at second, just different years.
All right, so probably the last pick for today, right?
Just to wrap it up on a nice even.
And we can do the 2009 starting tomorrow.
So we got about halfway, right?
Yeah, a little bit halfway.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So again, I kind of need pitching.
Kinji Jojima was terrible this year.
Jose Lopez benchback for me at this point.
Rauli Banya's the same thing.
I already have four really good outfielder,
and a DH, so that doesn't really make a lot of sense.
Felix was starting to hit his stride,
but I would like to save Felix for later,
later down the road.
So this actually puts me in a pretty tough situation here.
So, yeah, things are starting to,
do I take Jose Lopez?
as kind of my
like
like my utility infielder
like I feel like one of us should have taken
Mark McLemore
we really should have
but I mean like who we get
McElmore played for the Mariners
from 2000 to 2003
like we're going to take Mark
McAmore over any of those guys
I mean I just I don't see it
I mean
what did he do in 2002
maybe I should have taken him over Paniero
that one
that was a surprise pick for me
but I get what you're doing
you're trying to build from the back
because you know you're going to get the top of the guys here pretty quick.
Yeah.
So this is, I don't know.
I'm tired of saying this is going to be surprise people
because if you guys are looking at the rosters like we are
with the rules we're playing with,
you might understand why I would do this,
but I'm going to take Brandon Morrow as a reliever.
Ooh, damn.
Yes.
I just, I can't.
have Jose Lopez on my team. I'm sorry I can't do it. And I'm not taking this version of Felix
quite yet. I'm not taking Ryan Rowland Smith. I mean, I would consider Baderd, but he's been
better another year. So Morrow is just kind of the, the dude. And like probably should take Yvanya's,
but again, I already have four outfielders, really good ones, and a DH. So it's just not, I'm
going to take Morrow and, you know, kind of start a bullpen of Sasaki puts in Morrow. That's,
that's not bad. Yeah, yeah, for sure.
All right. So that is going to do it for our show today.
