Starting point is 00:00:56 and a friendly reminder that Locked-on Mariners, along with the rest of the Locked-on MLB Network, work will be going to three shows a week starting on Monday and all the way through to mid-February. So if you still want to hear from us five times a week, be sure to visit patreon.com forward slash control the zone and subscribe so you can get the two shows we post every week on there. So with that out of the way, today on Locked-on Mariners, we're going to be continuing are all mariners drafts spanning from the teams of 1996 all the way through to 2021. This was an idea that a listener of ours drew proposed last week in which we craft a 26-man roster,
Starting point is 00:01:37 each made up of one player per Mariners roster from 1996 through 2021. Of course, on yesterday's episode, we drafted all the way up to 2009, and that's where we'll begin. If you haven't listened to that episode, I suggest going back and listening to that first, and then come back here when you're done. at the end of all this we'll be posting both of our rosters on our Twitter at L.O. underscore Mariners and have you vote on which one you think is the best. Just a reminder of our guidelines here, while we can each select a version of the same player, we can not select a version that has already been taken by one of us. We can also not have two versions of the same player on one roster.
Starting point is 00:02:20 At the end of this, we will also get what is basically a mulligan. We can go back and change one pick of ours so long as we don't select a player we already have on a roster. So if this is your first time joining us, welcome to the show. If you like what you hear, give us a follow or subscribe wherever you're listening to this. We greatly appreciate it. Colby, do you want to give a quick rundown of your draft so far and then make your pick for 2009 before it switches over to me? Sure. So my team right now is 96 J. Buneer, 97 Randy Johnson, 98 Griffey, 99 Edgar, 2000 A-Rod, 2001, Bresseroon, 2002, Kazahiro Sasaki, 2003 Mike Cameron, 2004, Ichiro, 2005, Richie Sexton, 2006, Adrian Feltre, 2007, JJ Putz, and 2008, Brandon Morrow. So solid. All right. So who are you taking an 09?
Starting point is 00:03:25 Yeah, this is a tough one. Because this was Franklin Gutierrez. This was his big year. And I love Goody. But my outfield is so stacked already. But I feel like if I don't take him here, you're going to take him. And do I want to try and like block you and take Gutierrez as a fifth outfielder? Or do I maybe take what is kind of Felix Hernandez's first breakout year? and those are really the only two options. If we're being on it, well,
Starting point is 00:03:55 David Ardzma is another interesting one here. He had a great year as well. And I've kind of been building my bullpen. So, yeah, I'm going to go ahead and, and it's hard. I'm going to go ahead and take the DA,
Starting point is 00:04:13 David Ardzma, uh, kind of build that bullpen. I'm going to put you on the spot. you picking Goody or are you picking Felix? I'm taking Goody. There may be better Felix out there. Okay.
Starting point is 00:04:26 Yeah, I'm taking Goody in 2009 and then I'm taking Felix in 2010 because that's the Sy Young year. The Sy Young Award. Yep. Yep. So those are my two. Good call. I figured you do that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:37 That's one of the first times the wrap around has hurt me because I had no shot at 2010, Felix. Yeah. Hey. So I just wanted the record to show that before we hit record on yesterday, show, you let me go first, which has allowed me to pick Felix here. 2010.
Starting point is 00:04:56 Trust me, I'm perfectly fine with that decision because my team's significantly better than yours. Sure, sure. Sure. Sure, sure. All right, so 2010 for me, that leaves some interesting choices. Could I pick Sean Figgins? Ooh.
Starting point is 00:05:14 It was actually not that bad that year. Still pretty bad, but yeah, not not his worst year, believe it or not. By the way, kind of sad. Nobody's going to take Russell Branion. 2009 would have been the year to do that. But yeah, yikes.
Starting point is 00:05:31 So, yeah, just kind of looking around. All right. So this is a little bit of a sneaky play here. 2010, I am going to take Cliff Lee. Yeah, I kind of thought that you would do that. Kind of only the really only option there. I'm going to get a Felix. This is the only shot to take Cliffley.
Starting point is 00:05:54 And if you guys remember, he was great in 2010. And he only, he only made 15 starts for the Mariners, but those count, those count. So, so suck it. How about that?
Starting point is 00:06:08 2011. What are you doing here? God, this is such a bad year. You want to know how bad 211 is? 67 and 95. Brendan Ryan was the war leader of this team. If you're wondering how bad 2000.
Starting point is 00:06:28 Yeah. Now, here's kind of the deal, right? My infield right now is A-Rod, Boone, Beltray, and Sexton. That's it. So I could use another infielder, and I could take Brennan Ryan to be my utility guy, I guess, technically, but mostly backup shortstop, but man alive, could he not hit at all? There's also Jack Cust. Dustin Ackley's best year.
Starting point is 00:07:05 I mean, holy cow, guys, this is really bad. Even Felix had kind of a down year for him. So, yeah, I'm going to go ahead, though, and I'm going to continue to fortify my bullpen actually. I'm going to go take 2011 Brandon League. Nice. I like it. Well, I'm going to take 2011 Michael Paneda.
Starting point is 00:07:36 Yeah, I thought maybe. I thought about Paneda and Fister. Yeah, Fester was really solid that year too. Yeah. God, what a bad year 2011 was. Okay, 2012. Yeah, 2012.
Starting point is 00:07:50 Hmm. Uh, not a lot of great options here either. Clearly, I am going to take Casper Wells. I do it late. You said it. Nope, no, no, no, no. Stop talking. Nope.
Starting point is 00:08:07 You took Casper Wells. It's over. I am going to be taking, there's one really interesting option, but I kind of feel like I need to address my bullpen here a little bit. I guess I'm going to go with Tomwell-Hompson. Here, 2012 Tom Woll-Holmpson. The bartender, huh?
Starting point is 00:08:37 Yeah. What are you feeling in 2012? Depression. Yeah. Lots of it. So 2012. My God. The early 2010 Mariners were just all.
Starting point is 00:08:57 awful. Oh, my God. I can't believe I had any hope at that point, but I did. Silly me, I guess. So, yeah, I'm going to go ahead and take 2012, like Jason Vargas is legitimately looking good right now. Stunk on ice.
Starting point is 00:09:35 Okay. I'm going to take as one of my catchers, John J-So, Nice. That's what I was going to do. Yes. That's who I was debating about. So good job. All right.
Starting point is 00:09:51 So we will be continuing this draft in just a moment. But real quick, a reminder. This episode of Lockdown Mariners is brought to you by Built Bar and Fan Tracks. We're giving that to you and we're having some fun here in the lockout.
Starting point is 00:13:33 having this all Mariners draft from 1996 to 2021 and we are going to continue here with 2013. Colby, I believe this is your pick, correct? It is indeed and I think it should be fairly obvious, but I'm going to go ahead and take Hasashi Iwakuma. Who finished third in the American League Cy Young. I still contend he should have won that year. he was great and I don't know if this was the year he became a fan favorite but if it you know if it didn't happen before this year it certainly was this year that cemented it you Kuma forever arguably the most underrated pitcher of Mariners history the dude was just
Starting point is 00:14:20 really good and not enough people talk about him yeah yeah for sure all right so I have a tough decision because you took the obvious choice now there really isn't another obvious choice. Could take Brad Miller. Dustin Ackley is still out there. Dossanackley. I think I'm going to go with Charlie for a busch, though. I'm going to go 2013, Charlie.
Starting point is 00:14:48 You fool. Actually, he was pretty good. Yeah. Yeah, he was pretty good that year. Yeah. It's funny because you take a reliever and you think about like his entire career and you're like, oh, why would you ever take that guy? But then you're like, well, in the individual year,
Starting point is 00:15:02 it was pretty good. So, all right, Ty, 2014. I mean, it's a pretty big option, you know, staring me right in the face right now. It's also some interesting bullpen options because this bullpen was absolutely fantastic. There's also 2014 of Sashi Iwakuma. Not quite as good as 2013, but still very. good still very very good at baseball um man uh what is my rotation looking like right now i got felix i got jamy moyer joel panero and michael paneda hmm got room for one more and we can add six i'm telling
Starting point is 00:15:53 you we can add six oh that's true that's true yeah yes we can have up to six starters no more and we have to have at least 12 pitchers we should have brought that up at the top but right Yeah. Man, this one is tough. Because it's really just to be transparent here. It's between Kno and Iwakuma. The thing is you can take Kno, but you can't take Iwakuma, but I won't have a chance to get 2014 Iwakuma.
Starting point is 00:16:28 Yeah, and just so you know, I'm taking 2014 Felix. Oh, okay. Not that that matters, but I just put that out there now. Yeah, yeah, that's my last year to get good Felix. That's true. That's true. All right. So, I mean, like, I already have Brett Boone at second base, right? But I mean, Canoe coming off the bench. Yes.
Starting point is 00:16:53 Well, let's see, though. Edgar's your DH. So, I mean, he's both of our DHS. Yeah. I don't know, man. You can do something really cool and do like a Boone against lefties, cano against righties type of thing. Yeah, that's true. Trying to think, though.
Starting point is 00:17:11 Also, if you're trying to win like a contest, you know what I mean? Yeah, true. Like if I'm trying to win a popularity contest, I feel like I should probably go Canow, right? Yeah. Yeah. I don't know, though, because Canoe, the steroids, you didn't end well here. Iwakuma's beloved, but Canoe was better than Iwakuma in 2014. So, yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:36 I mean, I'm a newcomer still really good. I mean, pretty good. Michael Saunders finished with the fourth highest war on this team. You also go Kyle Seeger. True. Yeah. Yeah, Seeks had a pretty good year. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:55 Yeah, and I kind of like to have a better third baseman than Beltray. I'm going to go, you would come up. Okay. Yeah. That put you back on the clock for 2015? Yep. Let me enter my Pick here.
Starting point is 00:18:12 Somebody going to double up with the DH. I mean. Now we're Nelson Cruz territory. Yeah, I know. I know. Do you want Edgar and Nelly? I mean, I could play Nelly at first, theoretically. I think you could.
Starting point is 00:18:27 I mean, keep in mind, you have to factor in the defense, which. Yeah. Are we even making lineups or are we just showing our rosters on Twitter? Probably just showing the roster. Yeah. Probably just showing the roster. This is also, was this Kyle Seeger's breakout year? Is that 26?
Starting point is 00:18:43 Not breakout, but you know what I mean. Like the really, really good year. I thought that was. I think that's 2016. When he had 30 home runs, that 99. Yeah. Yeah. How's this for a blast?
Starting point is 00:18:59 Fifth and F or fifth and B war on this team, Franklin Guti Harris. This is the year that he came back, right? yeah um yeah yeah yeah also on this team set smith austin jackson dad smith that's right i mean mark trombo baby i mean like i i'd feel like i don't know i mean cano had a pretty good year that year as well um it's probably none of the pitchers yeah yeah none of the pitchers i mean carsin smith had a solid year Yeah Rodney was bad this year Yeah I think I'm gonna go Nellie
Starting point is 00:19:48 You're starting rotation right Nelson Cruz okay yeah I'm gonna go Nellie That's a good pick Yeah that's a good pick Yeah Just figure it out later Get the talent Yeah plus if you have Cruz on your on your team
Starting point is 00:20:01 I mean I could take Cruz later but Right again popularity contest Name a more popular mariner in the last 10 years than Nelson Cruz Well and also 2015 Nelson Cruz is the best one. Yeah. He is hashtag really good. So, yeah, it puts me in a tough spot because this was not Canoe's best year.
Starting point is 00:20:27 Yeah. And I could take Seeger, but I could also just take him in 2016, which was actually his best year since I had the back-to-backs here. Canoe also had a good year that year. It's a couple of interesting choices in 2016. Yeah, there are. That was a fun team. I'm probably going to regret this, but I do have the do-over pick if I want to take it. I'm going to take Carson Smith in 2015.
Starting point is 00:21:05 That gives me a bullpen of JJ puts, Brandon Morrow, David Arzma, Brandon League, and Carson Smith, like in their best years. It's pretty good. So 2016, yeah, I get interesting. Do I take Canoe? Do I take, do I take Seeker? Pretty much is what it comes down to. James Paxle. Yep, yep.
Starting point is 00:21:30 Steve Seashach? Actually, I mean, I already have Carson Smith. Felix Iwakuma, Cliff Lee, as my one, two, three. Like, that's, oh, and Randy Johnson. Oh, yeah. Yeah. So
Starting point is 00:21:46 I could carry six starters But like No It comes down to me This year It comes down to either Canoe Canoe or Seeger
Starting point is 00:21:59 Canoe is slightly better Let's see You have not taken Canoe or Seeger either I assume that's where you're going With this pick Maybe I mean, like, I have...
Starting point is 00:22:23 You're going to take Ioki? No. Leonice Martine. I mean, like, I was kind of looking at Montgomery and Seashch a little bit, but... Well, I'm going to take Canoe and let you not take Kyle Seeger and be that guy. Ha ha. It worked. I'm taking Kyle Seeger.
Starting point is 00:22:47 You have been fooled. Ha ha. That's what you think. I'm just smarter. than you. All right. So 2016, Kyle Seeger goes to me. And we are going to be picking this thing back up in just a moment. Real quick, a reminder of this episode of Lockdown Mariners is brought to you by betonline.ag. Starting point is 00:23:55 We are on the home stretch here in our All Mariners, 1996 through 2021 draft. And I have the pick here in 2017. And this is a pretty interesting year. Pretty interesting year. There's quite a few really solid options here. I think I know where I'm going to go with this. I'm going to take Mike Zanino.
Starting point is 00:24:23 Yeah. I mean, obviously. 2017 Mike Sinina Yeah The best Mike Sanino we've ever seen And one of the best seasons by any mariner catcher ever So yeah that was an easy one You weren't going to take him I was
Starting point is 00:24:38 I'm going to go ahead and it hurts a little bit I'm going to go ahead and take my Nelson Cruz year here And go on the clock in 2018 Which is another interesting year Yeah Kind of the end year for Mariners contention, if you want to call it that? This is a really strong error.
Starting point is 00:25:00 So it is. There's a lot of options. It kind of comes down to team build. Like to me, I think Mitch Hanager was the best player on that team. But I already have a stacked outfield. I already have two DHS. And if I really want Mitch, I could take 2021 Mitch. Because I have a feeling you're going to take this Mitch.
Starting point is 00:25:19 If I take Edwin Diaz, who I'm kind of thinking of right now, Seguera probably a little bit better. but Diaz this year was just insane. So I think I'm going to go ahead and take, let me go ahead and take Edwin Diaz, even though it's, dang it. That's what I was taking, yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:39 I'm going to take James Paxton. So the best Hanager year is not available, but I get it because Pax, this is the last year you can take Paxson. Yeah, yeah. I thought about it. All right, 2019. So kind of weird.
Starting point is 00:25:55 We did not get a Mitch Hanigers, Mitch Hanager's best season of his career. Nobody took him. Yeah. Yeah. 2019. This is an interesting year. There's one idea that I kind of want to do.
Starting point is 00:26:17 I am going to take Austin Nola. Ooh, you son of a gun. See, I censored myself that time, so you didn't have to. I put the dolphin sound on last episode, by the way. I would know if I listened, but, you know, I don't. Let's see here. One, two, three, four, five, six. All right, so I have seven-man bullpen.
Starting point is 00:26:45 So, and I have four stars. So I do need to make, I need to take one more starter. And then I can do, and then I can just pick whatever I want, because I have my 12 pitchers. I like the, I like the, the,
Starting point is 00:27:00 uh, the Nola pick. That was a really good, uh, pick, which is very annoying. Domingo Santana, baby, was okay. Um, so I,
Starting point is 00:27:12 I need a catcher. So I'm going to go ahead and I'm going to take 2019, Tom Murphy, uh, who hit 273, 324, 535. Uh,
Starting point is 00:27:20 so, Tom Murphy is my pick. Now, 2020 is really interesting. interesting. Because question is. So like look,
Starting point is 00:27:35 we're at the end of it, right? So we can pretty much talk openly strategy. We only have two more picks. I need another starter. Right. Kyle Lewis, though, this is, you know,
Starting point is 00:27:45 Lewis's big ear. And the Mariners, like, basically what it comes down to is, is do I want to take a 2021 starting pitcher? Or do I want to take a 2020 starting pitcher because if I don't take a 2020 starting pitcher,
Starting point is 00:28:01 I'm going to take Austin Nola to be my 2020. So I have 2020 Noah and 2019 Murphy as my catchers, but then I have to take a starting pitcher for 2021 and the Mariners rotation in 2021. Let's say it had issues. But that's what I'm going to do because I want Nola and Murphy as my pitcher, as my catchers because I think those are their two best years. So you're on the clock for 2020. You want Marco?
Starting point is 00:28:34 You want Kyle Lewis? Who you want? Well, I have to draft relievers where I am right now. Oh, you pigeonholed yourself. Yeah. So naturally.
Starting point is 00:28:46 Naturally. So sorry, Kyle Lewis. I am going to take Kendall Graveman. 2020, Kindle Grieve. Reliever. Kindle Graveman. Yes.
Starting point is 00:28:56 Yeah, but 2020, Kendall Graven But 2020, Kendo Graven, yes. Why not take 2021 Kendall Graveman? Because, Colby, you'll see. All right.
Starting point is 00:29:09 Well, go ahead and make your 2021 pick. I think that's a mistake. I will be taking Paul Seewald. Yep, a mistake. All right, so I have to take a word just about done. I have to take a starter.
Starting point is 00:29:21 So it's one of those five. No, I feel like the rest of my rotation is so good. I'm just going to go ahead and take 2021 Chris Flexen and call it a draft. Nice. So there we go. All right. Chris Flexen. So that is our draft.
Starting point is 00:29:40 So Colby, do you want to do a do-over? No, my team is perfect. Of course. Of course. I'm not even joking. I do not think I could have picked any better. Wow. All right.
Starting point is 00:29:56 Very confident. very confident. I It's because Ty Sacks. Of course. I, however, will be making a change. I will be swapping out
Starting point is 00:30:08 2002 Joel Paniero for 2002 Arthur Rhodes. Interesting. Over Freddie Garcia? Yep. You have five starters. Yep. Five starters, right?
Starting point is 00:30:23 Yep. I have Felix, Cuomo, Moyer. Moyer, Peña, and Paxon. Hmm. Yeah, probably would have gone with Freddie Garcia. So you're going with eight reliever?
Starting point is 00:30:35 No, you have seven. So we each ended up with 12, 12 pitchers, which was the minimum. We both have five starters, which is the minimum. We both have two catchers, which is the minimum. And the rest is kind of like whatever you want to do. So there you go. That's a wrap. I am confident that I have the better team.
Starting point is 00:31:00 I am also not confident that people will see it that way. I am very confident that I have the better team. And I am confident that people will see it that way. I have the better A-Rod. I have the better Gryphi. I have Brandy Johnson, you don't. I have the better Felix. I have the better Lee, although I guess you have 20,
Starting point is 00:31:20 I guess you have 2010 Felix. So I have 2014 Felix was better than 2010 Felix. I have arguably the better Ichero. But I also have first inning in here. Houston on opening day, Kendall Graven. So that was as a starter. You don't get that. You only get his relief appearance. Nice try.
Starting point is 00:31:43 So she just run down the teams real fast here. 96, Alex Rodriguez, 97, King Griffey Jr., 98, Edgar Martinez, 99, Jamie Moyer, 2000, John Olerud, 2001, each row, 2002, 2002, Arthur Rhodes, 2003, Brett Boone, 2004, Raoul-Labanias, 2005 Eddie Gordado.
Starting point is 00:32:03 Wait, I did not have Gordado on my believers. Wait, hold on. Back it up. Back it up. I thought I only had six. Sorry, Ty. I only had. Sorry, Ty. No. You lose. Nope. You lose. Nope. Nope. You already made your one substitution. No, I, I'm calling an audible here. I am calling an audible here. You cannot. It doesn't matter. I have the official roster. So you're out. Darn. What's the audible you want to try to make? I was going to swap out Arthur Rhodes for Mark McLemore. Not the audible I thought you'd take, but okay, fine.
Starting point is 00:32:37 So 2002 is Mclemore. Yes. Return of the Mac. Yes. So, yeah, I did not realize that I had at Ecuador. I totally forgot about that big. Whoops. So, 2002 Mark McLemore instead.
Starting point is 00:32:58 And then Brett Boone in 2003, Rallo Libanias, 2004, Eddie Grudardo, 2005, 2006, JJ Putts, 2007, Kenji Jojima, 2008, Adrian Beltrade, 2009, Franklin Gutierrez, 2010, Felix Hernandez, 2011, Michael Panetta, 2012, Tomwell Helmson, 2013, Tomwell Helpson, 2013, Charlie Furbush, 2014, Hasashii O'Mekewukum, 2016, Nelson Cruz, 2016, Kall Seeger, 2017, Mike Zanino, 2018, James Paxon, and 2019, Austin, Austin, Austin, and Nola 2020, Kendall Gravenin, 2021, Paul Seawald. There you go. Okay. So I made a similar mistake to you, but I don't think I'm going to change it. I drafted three catchers today,
Starting point is 00:33:45 and you only need two. But because I have J-So in 2012, Murphy in 2019, and NOAA in 2020. But I'm looking at the 2012 roster to see if I wanted to make a change. I'd rather have the Felix I have. And plus I don't want to drastically change everything.
Starting point is 00:34:04 I like my rotation as it is. So what really comes down to is do I want Brendan Ryan as a utility guy? And my answer to that is no, because right now I have Canoe on the bench and I have Nola who can play multiple positions. So I don't really need a pure utility guy. So my team is 96 Buneer,
Starting point is 00:34:28 97 Randy. 98 Griffey, 99, Edgar, 2000, A-Rod, 2001, Brett Boone, 2002, Kazahiro Sasaki, 2003, Mike Cameron, 2004, Ichiro, 2005, Sexton, 06, Beltrae, 07, 08, Morrow, 09, 09, Ardzma, 10, Cliff Lee, 2011, Brandon League, 2012, John Jaseo, 2013, Iwakuma, 14, Felix Hernandez, 15 Carson Smith, 16 Robinson Canoe, 17 Nelson Cruz, 18 Edwin Diaz, 19 Tom Murphy, 20, Austinola, and 2021, Chris Flexson.
