Starting point is 00:00:46 unsung hero, platinum glove and minor leager of the year. Before we get into them, shout out to our title sponsor today. Booking.com. Booking. Yeah. The right stay can make you a fan of any city.

So let's get these two layups of awards out of the way.
Starting point is 00:01:21 So reliever of the year, Andreas Monios, right? No debate there. You want to make a case for Colin Snyder? I could. Maybe Muñoos was an All-Star. He was mostly really good. the times it was bad they they stand out right off the top of your head the Milwaukee game the rangers game the tigers series like yeah so like that's typically when you're when like your bad performances jump out right away it's usually because like there was like four or five of them and the other 50 were like great so yeah it's probably Munoz but i think Snyder has a legit uh kind of like one one B type of argument to be made there.
Starting point is 00:02:08 But yeah, I think Munoz just gets the nod for his overall work. And Snyder didn't quite do it for an entire year. He was kind of in the minors for half the year, give or take. But I think it also has to be considered all the outside factors and what Munoz had to shoulder this year because of the injuries to Santos
Starting point is 00:02:25 and Brash getting asked to, you know, give them a four-out save in the second game of the year and being asked to do that on multiple occasions for the rest of the year. A lot of responsibility was placed upon Munoz. So it's honestly pretty remarkable that he only had the few blow-up outings that you mentioned. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:46 Hopefully the Mariners can address the high leverage concerns. And, you know, they might have already done that with Taylor and hopefully a healthy Santos next year because Munoz also had back issues. And he had that little scare with his elbow. So, you know, it's, it's always a little frightening, you know, when you're, bullpen's already, you know, pretty beaten up. And then your best piece has these little nagging injuries. So, yeah, hopefully they can lighten the load on them next year. And that should actually make them even more effective.
Starting point is 00:03:19 And just having Santos and hopefully Taylor is still, you know, pretty solid next year as well. And then maybe just maybe you get Matt Brash back at some point to take some more of that load off. But yeah, I think Munoz is the guy. I think Snyder is probably a firm number two. in that ballot. Right. So then biggest surprise, and this is biggest positive surprise.
Starting point is 00:03:45 I mean, there's a lot of surprising disappointments that we could talk about this year, but we're keeping things positive. I nailed everybody slash line. Yeah, let's bring up the flag players. Not for me,
Starting point is 00:03:55 though, only for him. Don't bring up mine. Please, don't. I mean, my Bryce Miller and Brian Wu flag. Bryce Miller was mine,
Starting point is 00:04:04 by the way. Was I Wu? Like, I think we saw. split those, but whatever. I forget, but yeah. This is, they're not worth remembering. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:13 But this is Victor Roblese. They, they, they sign him after he gets released by the, by the nationals. He makes his debut on June 5th. And from that point forward, slashes 328, 393, 465, 467 rather. It's a 154 WRC plus. 30 stolen bases over that time. Just strikes out 16.8% of the time,
Starting point is 00:04:34 6.1% walk rate. team is fantastic. He said he got DFA'd and I think we were like, uh, maybe. And then obviously, uh, somebody broke the news.
Starting point is 00:04:46 I can't quite remember who. Um, and got a ton of credit for it. But, uh, I think that was you. On ESP on ESPN, it says according to the lockdown mirrors podcast.
Starting point is 00:04:56 Oh, so it was us. Yeah. It doesn't say tidying it's all us. So yeah. It's a we thing here. Yeah. This is a marriage as we all know.
Starting point is 00:05:04 Yes. Uh, 50, even though I do most of the heavy lifting. Yeah, it's Robles. Interestingly enough, I think that you could probably throw Colin Snyder on this ballot and get some votes for him as well. He certainly was a real pleasant surprise. Some of us advocated for the Mariners to acquire him in the off season.
Starting point is 00:05:30 And it worked out pretty well. So who's the real newsbreaker here? Right, right, right. But, yeah, Snyder's on the list. Always five steps ahead. Never wrong. Just early. Sure.
Starting point is 00:05:44 But I'm an early adapter. I don't know what to tell you. Right. But yeah, it's Robles. And then maybe Snyder is on that list. Yeah. I mean, I think it's pretty hard to pick anybody but one of those two guys. I think everybody else either performed as you might expect or worse.
Starting point is 00:06:02 Yeah. It's pretty crazy that Robles turned into what he did. when you think back on his marriage debut and that game down in Oakland where he misses the fly ball the night before actually was technically his debut but I'm more so talking about his first start but yeah he he pinch hits in the game the night before and hits into the game ending double play
Starting point is 00:06:28 the next day misses that fly ball I believe he gets hit by a pitch can't remember if he's, something else happened in that game but it was like okay he's not going to be long for this roster when you were watching that and then he just he went off he he was essentially an all-star for the next month and a half kind of fell off offensively for a little while and then was amazing again offensively he was doing it player yeah and was doing it through hip issues knee issues. You got hit on the hand a couple of times by
Starting point is 00:07:05 pitches. I think that's the thing that was most impressive about Robles outside of obviously, you know, the numbers and, you know, his personality that we got to learn about very quickly was just he was a dog, right? He played through a lot of stuff this year. Robles had been here for the entire year and had done some facsimile what he did. The Mariners probably win the division. Like it's a big of a difference he could have made. So yeah, Robles is the biggest surprise. Yeah, 100%.
Starting point is 00:07:34 All right. So we've gotten through the two layup awards essentially. Now we are going to get into some of the more. Yeah. But we're going to get into some of the more difficult conversations as well. Coming up here in just a moment. But first, a reminder of this episode of the Locktime Airs podcast is once again brought to you by booking. com.

Starting point is 00:08:31 make you a fan of any U.S. city, even your baseball rivals. Booking.com, booking dot yeah. And you're listening to the Locked-on Marrars podcast. We are handing out team awards for the 2024 Seattle Mariners. Let's talk about a minor leaguer of the year, Colby. Who is the best minor leaguer in the Mariners farm system? I actually kind of already went over this in my solo show a few weeks ago. So I'll give you the floor first. Yeah, minor leaguer of the year. Laz is certainly in the mix.
Starting point is 00:09:07 He asked to be he was dynamic this year. But I think the actual answer is Michael Oroyo. Just, you know, what he, what he proved at the play in terms of his power and his speed. Like he went from like, oh, an interesting guy who, you know, maybe utility type, if he can show 10 home run pop or something like that, like to a legitimate.
Starting point is 00:09:27 admit like, no, this guy might play second or third and be, you know, a 20 home run, 20 stolen base type of guy and be a pretty good defender at one of those spots. Now, obviously, there's still a lot of questions. He's only 19, but he was on the same path as, as Laz and actually outperformed him more consistently than Montez did this year. So I think it has to be a Royo, just if we're going off of, you know, statistics. I think it has to be Arroyo over. I think it has to be Arroyo over Montez. But, you know, I know Laz certainly had a very exciting year
Starting point is 00:10:03 and in Mariner fans are super excited about Montez, mainly because there's that stupid Yordon Alvarez comp floating around out there. Maybe Yordon, baby. Yeah, because that's a totally reasonable thing to expect. But yeah, Michael Oroyo to me is the, he's the minor leaguer of the year. Las is definitely top four or five,
Starting point is 00:10:25 probably number two, you know, And then I think had Colt Emerson been healthy, he would have been in that mix. But he wasn't. So what are you going to do? I think Michael Royo is the winner here. Yeah. I'm with you on that. That's who I picked a couple of weeks ago and nothing changed in the final few games that Lazz and Royal played in from that episode forward.
Starting point is 00:10:49 So yeah, you look at Royals numbers between low A and high A this year, 285,400, 509. he was actually better in high A than he was in low A, which is pretty remarkable. 148 WRC plus in total between the, the two spots, 23% K rate, 12.3% walk rate, 23 home runs between the two levels.
Starting point is 00:11:13 Yeah, that answered a lot of questions. And it gave more clarity as to where he could potentially play positionally. So, yeah, I mean, the future is really bright for a royal.
Starting point is 00:11:24 And we'll see where, you know, this takes him. I assume that he's going to start the year back in high A, but he might not be long for it in 2025 if he keeps doing what he did this year. Yeah, good chance the Arkansas travelers will be defending their title with Las Montes and Michael Royo both on their roster and probably Colt Emerson. Yeah. Yeah. So second half Arkansas next year might be it might be a problem. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. So let's get into some defense here for the, for the major league ball club who was the best defender
Starting point is 00:12:00 or the platinum glove on the 2024 marries? I think there's a couple options here. Sure, but it's Cal Raleigh. Yeah, yeah, it has to be Cal. Julia was fantastic in center. Rojas, really good at third. Yeah, but it's Cal.
Starting point is 00:12:17 Yeah, it's Cal for, and spoiler alert, we're probably going to want to talk about this a little bit later on as well. for all that Cal does, I mean, obviously, posts a ton and had to play a lot behind the plate and take a beating on a consistent basis, but also having to work with that pitching staff, right?
Starting point is 00:12:38 A very diverse group of arms, and that goes beyond the starting rotation. You know, it's not that Julio wasn't great. He was. And obviously, Rojas graded out very well. You know, also, you know, who else also had a pretty good year defensively? which is nice because it's literally the only thing he did well all year. J.P. Crawford was pretty solid with the glove this year above average.
Starting point is 00:13:00 Certainly not platinum glove material. But yeah, it's Cal Rale. I mean, you look at, I mean, 98th percentile in framing, 74th percentile and caught stealing above average. He's about an average blocker of balls in the dirt. Get rid of the ball quickly and cleanly. Just about the only thing Cal Rale can't do is catch a relay throw. And I'm sure they'll fix that this winter. All right. So let's do
Starting point is 00:13:27 Rookie of the Year. Not a lot of options. We saw a few rookies for the bearers, but not a ton that technically like popped off or even really stuck around. Yeah. Ryan Bliss was solid at times in his. His week, week and a half. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:53 You know, I think about obviously the home run. against the Mets on Sunday night baseball. Was that the Sunday night baseball game? Or was that the Friday night game? Can't remember. But you had a home run against the Mets. Was that Bliss? That was, yeah, Bliss had a home run in one of the Mets games.
Starting point is 00:14:10 It was Friday night. It was against Mania. Okay, yeah. Yeah. And then the Marlins game where he went like what, four for four? I remember the Angels game where he got his first hit and wreaked havoc on the bases. Yeah. I was at that game.
Starting point is 00:14:25 So, of course, I remember that one. but uh yeah sure taylor's the guy that Troy taylor's the guy that stuck though you're like what 20 innings here 15 innings so yeah so does he get it because he actually finished the the season with the team sure i mean emerson hancock probably has to be i don't know if hancock technically had rookie eligibility left i'm not sure i know it was like gray area uh but if hancock did let's take a look i don't know what your uh line is for rookies but i mean leo Rivas also finished the year with the team. Jonathan Clase, who's no longer with the team, but he had his week.
Starting point is 00:15:07 So yeah, it's a lot of guys who are just like, yeah, they were here for a little while. And then they just up and down, up and down a lot. I have a feeling that next year, this award is going to be a lot more fun to talk about, or at least I hope. There's the potential for it, at least. I think I'm just going to give it to Taylor By the way Hancock only had 12 big league innings before this year so He's definitely eligible for this
Starting point is 00:15:36 That being said he wasn't very good So I'm going to give it to Taylor Negative 6 Negative 0.6 war And I'm supposed to give that guy rookie the year Get out of here It's Troy Taylor Right because you love pitcher off war
Starting point is 00:15:51 Well this was B war So okay Okay, okay. All right. Well, that fits your narrative better. Just outs or outs. I don't know why we place so much value on strikeouts in the war formula, but whatever. Sure.
Starting point is 00:16:05 F war. But no, Hancock did a nice job in the first month. Certainly was the rookie who, you know, appeared in, like, the most games. Like, he had the biggest impact on the season. But that doesn't necessarily mean it was a positive impact. But he kept the mares above, you know, above water in his first month. or so and then up and down a few more times and he was he was okay but uh i think he's probably number two uh on my list which is you know to say that the marries didn't get a lot of help
Starting point is 00:16:37 from their minor league system this year uh i'm going troy taylor as well yeah i would say that taylor is the the guy that impressed me the most that came up um rivas was fun and had a couple of big moments uh obviously that you know the he was part of that great double play against the Mets. He had the walk-off on, and Dan Wilson's first game against the Giants. And, you know, held it down at times when, you know, JP was hurt.
Starting point is 00:17:08 And they, you know, they needed some help at shortstop. He had his little insanity run himself. Yeah. So I commend Leo Rivas for that. But I wouldn't walk away from Rivas's 2024 saying that I was like impressed, right? but I do but I did step away from Troy Taylor's you know look it was only 19 innings but I walked away from Taylor's 19 innings going like yeah this guy can pitch right and he can be a part of this thing long term in a pretty significant way
Starting point is 00:17:39 so yeah so I'll just go with Taylor yeah I think I think it's Taylor Hancock Bliss and then Lockler had a couple moments too but overall he just wasn't ready he wasn't good enough. So yeah, I think it's Taylor almost by default. There's just not a lot of good options this year. And, you know, next year there's a very good chance that there's a rookie in the opening day lineup. So, yeah, this conversation probably going to be at least a lot more eventful next year. All right. So we still have unsung hero, Cy Young, and MVP all coming up here in just a moment. But first, a reminder, this episode of the Lockdown Marys podcast is brought to you by Fandong.
Starting point is 00:18:23 Duel and game time. NFL fans can start the season with a big return on Fandul, America's number one sports books. You get started with $200 in bonus bets. Yeah, you heard that right. $200 in bonus bets guaranteed when you place your first $5 bet.
Starting point is 00:18:49 That's fandul.com. So I used to live in New Mexico and down in New Mexico. there are zero pro sports teams and a lot of bands and artists that I listen to skip going there more often than not so when I moved to Toronto where there's a baseball team a basketball team a hockey team even a soccer team and there's great music being played every night in the city I was right in my element when I want to catch a ball game or my wife and I want to see a band I always get my tickets through game time and that was the case well before game time sponsored our network and before I even join the network because it is truly the best ticketing service out there here.
Starting point is 00:19:26 Hands down. I truly, truly believe that. And now it's getting even better thanks to Game Time Picks. Game Time Picks filters out the fluff to show you only incredible deals on great seats so you don't have to waste time searching through thousands of tickets. I can just go on the app. It'll show me the best deal right away. It'll show me the exact view I'll have. Starting point is 00:20:14 What time is it? And you're listening to the Locked-on Mariners podcast. We are wrapping up our team awards for the 2024 Mariners. We have MVP, Sy Young, an unsung hero left on the board. Let's start with Unsung Hero. I think there's one guy that properly fits this bill. But I'm interested to hear what you have to say. So I don't know this qualify.
Starting point is 00:20:42 I have two because I don't know if the first one qualifies, but like I guess technically anybody could qualify. Sure. But like the person I want to give the award to is Luke Rayleigh. That's who I was referring to. too. Okay. I was going to say because like I think pretty much everybody in like the Mariner fandom has like Luke Rayleigh was a bright spot this season like legitimately he was very productive. He's the only offseason move that worked out. Yeah, he was very productive on
Starting point is 00:21:10 the field. Obviously he's got you know a personality that fans absolutely love and should like he seems like a genuinely good dude who is very appreciative of the fact that he gets to play a, you know, a kid's game for a living and wants to make it work in Seattle. So, and again, he was just super productive on the field. Basically, he and Julio carried in the second half for a good chunk. Now, it's not like Turner was terrible and Rosen Rane was terrible or anything like that, but those two guys were elite, basically since August 1st. Those two guys were, were some of the best hitters in baseball.
Starting point is 00:21:47 So Rayleigh answered a lot of questions. And, you know, it's on a team that has Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez. and Victor Robles ascended as quickly as he did. And now you've acquired Randy Rosarayna and you have this, you know, quintet of starting pitchers and you have Munoz. Like it's really easy to get lost in the shuffle here. And Rayleigh almost quietly went out there and was your most consistent hitter from, you know, game one to game 162.
Starting point is 00:22:13 And he certainly provided some thunderous home runs and stole the bases. And I think Dave Sims would hate us if we didn't mention all the great bunts that he put down. Of course. You know, he was everything you could want and more. And he just kind of gets a little lost in the shadows because Julio finished really well. Cal has, you know, had his best season and obviously the pitchers and Rosarana Star Factor. I feel like we even talked about Justin Turner more down the stretch than we did Luke Rayleigh. So, yeah, I think Luke Rayleigh is is the answer to this one.
Starting point is 00:22:44 Yeah, I think you could absolutely throw out, you know, Justin Turner. You mentioned him. Sure. And to this fold, you could even throw a couple of the. pitchers into this fall as well like the ones yeah the the ones that are not going to uh you know when the say young could be mentioned here um but yeah to me it was it's really right because he's not he's not the star he's not cal he's not julio uh but at times this year he carried the offense at times he was like the only watchable at bat in this lineup to be quite frank um and you know
Starting point is 00:23:19 we were wondering like who was luke really going to be in 2024 what kind of player is he actually because you look at it at 2023 and it was split right down the middle for one half he was excellent for the second half he was below average so what were you going to get and this year 243 320 463 that's a 129 w rc plus 22 homers 58 rbi as a part-time player you know 4 455 plate appearances and he didn't even play regularly until about April 20th. He had a fantastic year. So let's get into Sy Young. I think this is the biggest debate because I think there are
Starting point is 00:24:09 three legitimate candidates here. Is it a bit more clear cut for you? I think there's two. Okay. to me Kirby's out I wasn't counting Kirby
Starting point is 00:24:32 Oh interesting Okay Kirby's out for me Because he just was so bad In the second half So he's out Woo Just
Starting point is 00:24:43 Not quite enough innings You know Just not Who is one of the three guys That I was considering But because of the innings Right So to me
Starting point is 00:24:52 It comes down to Logan And Bryce Yeah and I want to, you know, buck the frontier and say it's, it's Bryce.
Starting point is 00:25:01 He was lower ERA, you know, and threw a hundred. He was better in the second half. Yeah, 180 innings. But Logan Gilbert led major league baseball and innings pitched this year.
Starting point is 00:25:10 He averaged more than a strikeout per inning. His ERA was right around three, like, a three, 2,3, 310 XERA, 327 FIP. It's not often that you see an ERA and FIP that close together.
Starting point is 00:25:25 just point four points off from one another. And so when I think about Logan Gilbert's year, I think about two low up starts, like disaster starts that probably pushed his ERA above three. Like that's ultimately what led to it. And then just a couple of poorly timed home runs late in starts. The eighth inning against St. Louis, the three-run bomb he gave up to,
Starting point is 00:25:48 was it Nelson Velasquez and the Royals, a game that they ended up needing to win. And so like mostly, It's two terrible starts. Then there's like three or four like, and then there was like three starts that were fantastic until the last pitchy through. And then they went from fantastic to pretty good. And I just think those small little things add up.
Starting point is 00:26:12 And so I think that you take out the start against Minnesota. And I think the other one was against Boston. Was it Boston? Yeah, I think it was Boston. FN way. You take out those two starts. and this yeah yeah the one where the it should have been called strike three to to end the inning and then he gave up like five yeah and they just completely shut down uh bryce miller didn't
Starting point is 00:26:37 do that ever but i just think the totality didn't bryce start the game that they blew in in coffin he sure did yeah he sure did which is why he'll never get my sion vote we could be talking about the mariners in the playoffs right now if brys miller hadn't sucked that night uh but yeah Bryce is like that's like you know he gave up fewer runs in Logan Gilbert he also threw 30 fewer innings so to me that matters and so I'm going to go Logan but I think Bryce is a very strong number two in in this discussion but ultimately I just I can't ignore the the you know literal extra 30 innings that you got from Logan Gilbert at roughly the same quality baseball that Bryce Miller gave you I've bounced back and forth on this a lot of
Starting point is 00:27:24 lot knowing that we were going to do the show eventually. I really want to give it to Bryce, especially for how good he was in the second half. But I do feel like something driving that decision is based off of just kind of the steps forward we saw him take. And that shouldn't necessarily factor into a Cy Young conversation. more of like a personal goal type of thing for Bryce specifically
Starting point is 00:28:00 right Logan was just overall better right you look at the overall numbers outside of the ERA he pretty much has Bryce beat in every area and again the ERA is close enough that if you subtract the eight runs he gave up in three innings against the Red Sox
Starting point is 00:28:17 it's probably yeah yeah it's negligible negligible so yeah yeah just Logan was asked to do more and he did more this year and Bryce is like whole can't not his whole but a big part of his candidacy really boils down to his last three starts of the year against the Yankees the Rangers and uh the Astros three games the mayor's absolutely had to win unfortunately that they won two of them uh they didn't win the the Yankees one but that certainly was not his fault uh so i i think we saw some huge steps from Bryce Miller this year
Starting point is 00:28:49 absolutely it's not enough it's not enough to take overtake the entire resume that was Logan Gilbert this year. Yeah. So yeah, I think I think we're in agreement here that Logan Gilbert's the mayor of Sion. But I did strongly, strongly consider Bryce Miller.
Starting point is 00:29:08 So team MVP. Cal Raleigh, thanks for listening. Yeah, I mean, that's, it's Caleb John Raleigh. That's the answer. Nobody comes close. Yeah, I mean, Victor Robles had a great year, but he got here in June.
Starting point is 00:29:23 He got for 75 games. Yeah. Uh, Julio was great, you know, for about a month and a half. Two months. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:30 From July 1 to the end of the, if Julio had done that for the entire year, it would have been him and it wouldn't have been close, but he didn't. Yeah. Um, and obviously, you know,
Starting point is 00:29:37 Luke Rayleigh unsung hero. Great. Uh, and we, we're not considering pitchers here, right? I don't think a pitcher can be, uh,
Starting point is 00:29:46 most, the most valuable player. Um, it's just cool. Logan Gilbert impacted 33 games. Yeah. So, yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:56 it's Cal, right? So we already talked about the defense and how stellar that was this year and all the things that he had to, you know, work through. I mean, the guy played through a broken tooth. He got beat to hell almost every single night behind the plate. Played in a 150 plus games. Some of those is DH, but still he caught a lot this year. Let's see here. How many games did he actually wind up catching this year?
Starting point is 00:30:20 It goes about 125. No, I'm not mistaken. 1 35. Holy cow. Okay. Let's real fast. I think that right there wins some of the MVP, just catching 135 times. Let's let's quick take a quick detour to the offseason, like literally 30 seconds.
Starting point is 00:30:39 Yeah. For the love of God, you cannot ask Cal Raleigh to catch 130 games again next year. No. 100 at the most. And if you have to deach him, you deach him. That's fine. But you cannot ask him to catch him to catch him. catch 135 games ever again.
Starting point is 00:30:56 Back to the back to the normal show. Yeah. So he's probably going to be the gold glove winner at catcher in the American League. At the very least he should be the silver slugger. He established himself this year as the best catcher in the game
Starting point is 00:31:13 or at least top two catchers in the game. It's either him or one of conturas. Yeah. 220, 312, 436. It's a slash line. 117 WRC plus he was worth 5.4 a 4 this year the 34 home runs which helps him get that record of the most home runs by a catcher in their first four seasons major league baseball and he did it in a big way in the final series three of the year he gets to 100 rbii which is incredible for a catcher first switching catcher to do that since 2009 he upped his walk rate this year to 11.1 percent which is fantastic. It also helps kind of counteract some of the strikeouts.
Starting point is 00:31:59 You know, obviously it's not a high average, but for what he gives you in the power department and he drives in a ton of runs, that's something they, not a lot of teams get from their catchers. It is very rare what Cal Raleigh did this year offensively, despite, you know, the lower numbers in the slash line, which I know a lot of people want to hyper-focus on that,
Starting point is 00:32:19 but what Cal Raleigh means to the Seattle Mariners. I don't think can be quantified, frankly. I mean, it can in some of the offensive numbers, but there's a lot of stuff that doesn't show up in the box score that makes Cal Raleigh incredibly valuable to this
Starting point is 00:32:37 team. And that I don't think can be overstated. Yeah, I mean, simply put, Cal is the man. Yeah. I mean, that's just all there is to it. He's the dude. Like, you're going into a
Starting point is 00:32:55 back alley for a fight. Who do you want to have your back? It's Cal Raleigh. That's the guy you want in your corner. So yeah, yeah, it just frankly, it's not close. And to pretend that it, that there's anybody else even in this conversation is a disservice to what Cal did this year as a player. So right. It's Cal. I mean, it's a layup. No brainer. Yeah. All right. So that is going to do it for our awards. Thank you guys so much for tuning into the show.
