The trade deadline has passed and the mayors have added an old friend to the bullpen.
We'll tell you who that is and give you our closing thoughts on the deadline coming up here on the Lockdown Marrars podcast.
Colby, hit it.

Ahoy, Sailors.
It is Tuesday, July 30th, 2024.
This is Tedding Gis Ellis and Colby Patnaud for the Lockdown Marys podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team.
every day. The trade deadline has officially passed, so we're going to give you our closing thoughts on what the
Marys did and what the rest of the league did. We'll also talk about the mayor's loan move of the day.
But before we do that, shout out to our title sponsor today. FanDuel, make every moment more.
This summer, FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or bonus daily.
That's right. There's something for everyone every day all summer long.

So the mayor has only made one trade today before the deadline. And it was for a reliever,
a reliever that will be very familiar to most, if not all, Marish fans. He was with the Marys back in 2021.
Of course, that is JT. Chagua, who was a part of that trade that brought Diego Castillo from the Tampa Bay raise to Seattle.
Chagua went to Tampa Bay with Austin Shinton, of course.
course. And Chagua has only thrown 16 and two thirds innings this year. But he does have a 162
ERA, which is obviously what stands out the most year when you look at his numbers.
The only statistic that matters. If you look at just the ERA, you go, wow, the merit is just
got one of the best relievers that moved at the deadline. Correct. But then you get into the
underlying numbers. No, that's your choice to look at the underlying numbers. You could just look at the
A.
And I'm making that choice here on the lockdown marriage podcast for you guys.
Because you need all the information that is available.
You deserve that.
As he's trying to just check out, he's trying to ignore the facts.
He's trying to ignore reality.
He's, he's scared to compete.
It's a 521 XERA for Chagua, 532 FIPP, a 495X FIP, just a 648 case per 9, 378 walks per
Now, if you remember back in 2021, when Shaw, when Shawah was with the Mariners, he threw his slider a lot.
It was like 60% of the time that he was throwing his slider, something ridiculous like that.
Yeah, 59.7% of the time he was throwing his slider in 2021.
Then 2022 that went down to 38.3%.
2023 went back up to 41.5%.
And then this year, it's been 39.8% of the time he's thrown that.
slider. It's a sinker slider profile overall. And I assume Colby that the merri's plan here with
Chagua is to have him throw that slider a bit more, right? Yeah, it's still a really good pitch.
Opponents are hitting 179 off of it. They're slugging 286. And it's got a 31% whiff rate.
Like, that's still legitimately good pitch. The problem is that a sinker sucks. And it's the pitch he's
throwing more than any other. So if you throw sliders, your best pitch more often. In theory,
strikeout should go up. The hip and all that stuff should go down. Now, what we don't know is why
he stopped throwing the slider over the last few years. Is that just Tampa Bay, Miami related?
Is that Shargwa trying to maintain health or something? I don't know. I don't know why he would go
from something that was super successful to something that wasn't or isn't anymore.
But yeah, I think this is mostly going to be sliders from Shergawa.
I think that's the fix that the Mariners have identified and said, well, we just do this.
Then we can, you know, get something out of him that we don't have right now.
So, yeah, it's a bit of a leap of fate.
Like we always say, when the Mariners acquire any arm automatically, you have to be a little bit interested.
You have to kind of think, okay, well, what do they see here?
And it doesn't always work.
Sometimes it does.
Sometimes it doesn't.
typically when they hit they hit big and when they miss it's a small miss so uh you know this is
just one of those moves where it's like look got them for basically nothing you got them for i believe
it was strombard who was an undrafted free agent last year uh interesting the mariners made uh the
mariners gave up one player this entire deadline who wasn't drafted last season drafting or signed
last season drafting and developing matters uh so yeah uh i think this is
you know, just a solid like, hey, let's got, we need a middle guy.
Let's go get this guy.
And we know what it looks like at Team Mobile Park.
We kind of understand, you know, how he thinks and how he operates.
We know how he is in the clubhouse.
And we think we know how to fix him, which sounds weird when you're talking about a guy
with a sub two ERA, even if it is only over 15 innings or whatever.
But yeah, the Mariners can definitely do something here to, you know, help Chagua improve.
because like you mentioned, the underlying numbers say that this is probably the worst guy in the Mariners bullpen right now.
But there's obviously, you know, or there's a pretty obvious solution right in front of you that could turn him into, you know, a legitimate guy.
This is just a shot.
This is this is kind of in line with like, you know, 2022 when they got like Matthew Boyd and Kirk Sallie and Jake Lamick.
They're just taking a shot on shock while.
Let's see.
We can get something out of them.
Sure. And I mean, right now, Jonathan Diaz is up to kind of cover some middle, middle inning.
So, Chargouille, well, Joan will certainly just take, take that spot from Diaz.
So there is an opening in the bullpen as the Mariners sent down, Gabe Spire today,
whose, you know, usage has been pretty hit or miss and his command and control have been pretty hit or miss since he's returned from the IL.
So, yeah, I think this is, you know, basically it's a free player that you like and that you
that you trusted and that you've worked with before and so why not take the shot on it yeah and so
like you mentioned they traded will scomberg uh who they signed as an undrafted uh free agent last year
uh i believe for a while and that still might have been the case at the time of the trade today
uh he was leading uh mariner's minor league pitchers and strikeouts uh this year um so another just
you know interesting guy that they've developed into an asset that they were able to to trade for uh for a
might be able to help them right now at the major league level.
Yeah, it's, uh, you know, we'll see my, my assumption would be is that the Mariners
want to use him in the same role that they had him in in 2021.
And if you guys remember, not exactly sure what, what the mayor.
I don't recall what the Mariners called it.
They had a specific name for the role, but essentially starter goes five and a third,
five and two thirds.
First guy out of the pen was Sharpewaw, most of the time, just to kind of clean up the little
mess, get him to the next guy and then hand the ball off to the back end of their
bullpen. So kind of a middle guy, but really it's when they're trying to make that transition
from the starter to the back end of their bullpen, we know that the Mariners don't like to bring in
their leverage guys in the middle of an inning. They call them pivot guys. Right. So yeah, we're just
trying to get, you know, from the rotation to the back end of our bullpen or to the middle
back end of our bullpen. We need an out. We need two outs like Shark Gawal was the guy they went to. And
he was very, very good at it. So, uh, yeah, I'm assumed that's the role they have.
vision for him right now.
Absolutely.
All right.
So let's go over our overall thoughts on the deadline as a whole, not just for the
Marys, but for the rest of the league, specifically the ALS, what, you know, the Astros did,
what the Rangers did, all that stuff in just a moment.
But first, a reminder, this episode of the Lockdown Marys podcast is brought to you by
Fandual.
I know I'm saying the obvious here, but I love sports.
I love them so much.
I never want them to stop.
But as the playoffs wind down, unfortunately, we get fewer games.
And the sports aren't sporting like I want them to.
But FanDuel lets me keep the sports going whenever I want.
All I have to do is open the app and dream up bets anytime I'm in the mood.
And this summer, FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily.
That's right.
There's something for everyone every day all summer long.
So head on over to fandwell.com slash locked on.
That's LOCKD-O-N and start making the most out of your summer.

And you're listening to the Locked-on Marrars podcast.
Tomorrow, you can catch the series finale between the Marers and the Red Sox on the Marriss
hometown broadcast series XM via the SXM app.
All you have to do to find that is search the word Mariners.
And we'll be catching you after the game tomorrow on the Locked-on Marers post-game show.
We're going to be getting into just full on, just talking about the day-to-day of the
Mariners for the rest of the season now that the trade.
deadline is over. No more trade speculation to talk about. It's just about what's happening on the
field the rest of the way here on a lockdown marriage. We'll also be doing our re-rank of the
Maris Farm System either next week or the week after. That'll be coming up pretty soon and all that
that good stuff. So, all right, let's just kind of go over our general thoughts about the Marys
deadline. Real quick, the final tally on the Marys deadline. They get Randy a Rosarano, of course,
last week. They get Justin Turner
yesterday. They get Jimmy
Garcia and J.T.
Chagua to help shore up their bullpen.
And
they ended up trading Aidan
Smith, Brody Hopkins. There's a player
to be named later. It seems
like that's going to be either Walter Ford
or Teddy McGraw, just based on
what's been reported so far.
RJ Shrek, Jacob
Sharp, Jonathan
Clase, Will Skomberg. Am I missing
anyone? Stanick and Francis.
if you want to count them.
Right.
Sanik and France go out as well.
And a couple of minor leaguers come back to the Marrars.
And those deals, of course, no one really that much of note, to be honest with you.
No offense to those guys, but that's just kind of the reality of it.
One of them is in AAA and, you know, runs okay.
So maybe he gets a September call up.
But yeah, nothing too consequential.
Sure.
All right.
So overall, what are your thoughts on this deadline for the Marys?
How are you feeling about what they were able to accomplish?
and what do you feel about what they were not able to accomplish?
Typical tie focusing on what wasn't instead of what is.
You got to look inside yourself, man.
That is not a good quality to have Eeyore.
But yeah, it's pretty solid deadline.
That's a rich coming from you, calling me E. York.
I am a ray of optimism as you're about to see.
I think that's a pretty good deadline.
Is it perfect?
No, of course not.
Can you nitpick some of,
of the deals that they made.
Not really.
I really don't think you can nitpick the deals they made.
You can say that they didn't make enough of them or whatever.
Then okay, fine.
But let's look at just on the surface,
what are some of the things we said the Mariners had to come away with this deadline with?
One of them, or number one, bats.
They had to get plural bats.
They got two of them.
And not only did they get two of them,
they got two of the,
what, two of the six highest WRC pluses that were moved at the deadline?
Two of the five.
Two of the top five.
like there weren't a lot of bats around and the mayor still managed to go get two of the five best bats that were removed.
Yeah, the top five though, for those of you wondering, uh,
ESOC Paredes was number one,
130 WRC plus.
This is based on WRC plus today,
not when they were acquired by the way.
Uh,
so Paredes is number one.
He goes to the Cubs who's not even contending, right?
Isaiah kind of Folefa,
uh,
who got traded here in the last moments of,
of the deadlines of the pirates,
uh,
116 WRC plus.
then it's Randy or sorry it's Ahmed Rosario
115 WRC plus wins of the Dodgers last night
then it's Randy number four at 113 WRC plus
Justin Turner at number five with a 110 WRC plus
Okay hey it's tie from the future I just wanted to interject real quick
Because I'm watching this back while editing and I realize I totally forgot to mention
Horace Salare who of course went from the Giants of the Braves last night
He's running a 115 WRC plus
So that pushes Randy a Roserana and Justin Turner down
a spot in the WRC plus rankings among all the hitters that have moved via trade this month.
So yeah, just wanted to make that clear before I know someone was going to make a note of it down
in the comments.
All right, back to the show.
Right.
So they got two of the best bats on the market.
So did they acquire bats that helped their lineup this year?
Yes.
Did they acquire bats who are performing right now?
Yeah.
And yes, they did.
Well, especially Randy and Turner specifically, both of those guys are like red hot since
the start of June.
Right.
for a couple months now.
They've been, you know, torching the baseball.
So did they get bats?
Yes, plural.
Did they acquire one of those bats that was acquired help them beyond this year?
Did they find a solution, a multi-year solution at this deadline?
Yes, they did.
Radio Rosemary is a multi-year solution.
Did they shore up the bullpen?
Yes.
Did they acquire a high leverage arm, which we've been talking about them needing ever
since Matt Brash was out for the year?
Yes.
They did.
They did all of that without touching their top five or six prospects,
which will make some people happy, will make some people angry, whatever.
So did they add payroll?
Was money a deterrent to the Mariners at this deadline?
As far as we can tell, no.
Now, maybe there was a deal they couldn't do because of the money, blah, blah, blah,
we don't know for sure.
But they added payroll.
They certainly added payroll at this deadline.
And they were seemingly very willing to go after Vlad Jr.
and add his money. Now, is that just like an exception that was made because it's Vlad Jr., right?
Right.
Or were they just able to add any sort of payroll kind of in that range?
Right. But at the very end of the day, they did add payroll to their, you know, to 2024.
They added payroll to 2025 as well by acquiring Randy.
But so did they add bats? Yes. Were they quality bats? Yes. Was at least one of them controlled beyond this year?
yes do both of the bats fill a need yeah they do uh did they get the high leverage bullpen arm they
needed yes they did did they make tweaks in the bullpen did they hold guys accountable for poor
for poor performance yes and no uh tie franz isn't here ryan stanick isn't here uh but you know
mitch hanniger is and garver is so it's kind of up in the air but obviously hanniger and garber
we're going to be much more difficult to do anything with than somebody like Thai France.
So I think when you look at the boxes that you want to check, they checked pretty much all of them.
Now, you know, we can argue whether or not they got enough bats.
I mean, if you wanted them to go add another hitter, like, fine, I'm right there with you.
But the problem I have right now is which hitter?
Because like, do you want them to go outbid somebody for Brian de la Cruz?
who's basically been Mitch Hanigar this year.
So let's go over some of the other hitters that went by WRC Plus.
So Lane Thomas went to the Guardians, 108 WRC Plus.
Jazz Chisholm went to the Yankees, 107 WRC Plus.
Carson Kelly went to the Rangers.
He's a catcher 105 WRC plus.
Tommy Fam went to the Cardinals 102 WRC Plus.
Josh Bell went to the Diamondbacks today, 96 WRC Plus.
And I believe they took all of his money as well,
which is probably not great news on,
Christian Walker's oblique injury.
Brian Dela Cruz went to the Pirates,
96 WRC plus. Paul DeYoung went to the Royals,
95 WRC plus. Christopher Morel went to the raise,
92 WRC plus. There's some other guys
that have gone.
Eloy. And yeah, Eloy's 80
WRC plus. Yeah. Right.
So again, like there's other
bats that went and maybe I'm
missing a guy here or two.
But
if they weren't of the names
that I just listed, odds are they were
a sub 90 WRC plus guy this year.
Oh yeah, Mark Kana got traded.
He's like a 98 WRC plus.
He got traded to the to the Giants at like the last minute.
But yeah, not a lot of league average bats in general.
Like not even talking about good to grade to elite bats,
just even league average bats.
Hardly any of them got traded at the deadline this year.
Right.
As we talked about not a market to desperately need elite bats
because as it turns out,
Brent Rooker, not available.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr., not available.
Luis Robert didn't get traded,
and honestly, not really performing like an elite bat right now.
So you just kind of go down the list of everybody
that the Mariners wanted or Mariners fans wanted.
They did pretty well.
Yondi Diaz wasn't even moved,
and everybody assumed that was a shoe in,
and he wasn't able to be moved.
So I think when you, you want to criticize the Mariners here and there,
like, fine, whatever.
but to me it's really tough to criticize them for not acquiring a player who didn't get moved at all.
I think we should also make the distinction between like criticizing the front office and just being bummed in general about like not getting ex player.
Right.
Like I'm bummed they didn't come away with Vlad Jr.
or Yonda Diaz or whoever, obviously.
But nobody did.
But we don't have a reference point for what these guys would have gone for because they didn't end up getting traded.
So we can just make uneducated guesses about what they would have wound up costing.
apparently the the raise were asking for three to four players for for yadi diaz but what kind of players
right were they asking for colt emerson for yadi dyes as like the headliner or were they asking
for like harry ford and lazaro montez right right both of which you probably shouldn't do it's probably
not worth pulling the trigger on that so so we just don't know because like a lot of the replies that i've
gotten today on twitter you know just after giving my thoughts on the deadline and just posting things about the
deadline. You know, a lot of it was like, all right, you have to overpay. Like, this is the time to
overpay. All right. I'm, I'm totally fine with overpaying. We've talked about, you know,
paying a dollar 50 for a dollar, et cetera. We've, we've had those discussions in the buildup to
this deadline. But again, when we don't have a reference point, I don't even know what overpaying
would look like. Right. And you need to remember that, you know, like you said, overpaying in the
dark, right? Like, there's not a price on this. You just want me to give you my price.
And until I hit the price of this mystery item, right?
Like, you're going to keep saying no.
So, like, at what point am I just shooting myself in the foot by going, like,
I'll give you Bryce Miller and Colt Emerson for Vlad, Vladimir Gar, Jr.?
That makes no sense, right?
You're right back where you started.
So just this idea here that, like, the Mariners didn't do enough because they didn't get a star bat.
I hate to break it to you.
There wasn't one available at this deadline.
and you can sit here and you can tell me like,
well,
you make them be available.
That's not how this works.
Paratus is the closest guy,
but the Paratus conversation is interesting
because Christopher Morel was such a huge part of that deal.
And you just,
if you're,
you know,
from the mayor's perspective,
you didn't have a Christopher Morrell to trade.
Right.
If you had a Christopher Merrill on your team,
considering what else you're running out offensively,
you probably want to keep that guy, right?
You're the mayor's.
And look,
he didn't end up going to a contender in general.
He went to the Cubs.
who more so wanted parades to,
to, you know, revamp for for next year and the year after, right?
So, um, so that's kind of a difficult conversation.
I would say the two misses to me are for the Mariners or Isaiah kind of for Lefe and a med Rosario.
Because Josh Rojas has gone into the tank.
And JP's still going to be out for another month at least.
Yeah.
So you needed, I think kind of.
Falafa was kind of the perfect fit there because he can play third he can play some shortstop
like that and he's hitting right now 116 WRC plus now he has a bit of money attached to him
for next year as well I think it's about $8 million something like that attached to him for next year
year so that's obviously a fairly expensive venture for the Mariners right to you know add that
caveat of course but that's that's a guy that I thought would have been a really nice fit for
the Marriers Rosario ended up going for a 27-year-old
old reliever in the minors who hasn't pitched at the big league level and was also by the way in the
marries system last year yep yeah uh to me you know at landing one of those years even paul de young
was the guy that i wanted he went for nothing too terribly expensive so there certainly are there certainly
is an argument to be made that you know they could have improved more than they did yeah but the idea
that they came away with nothing at this deadline that they didn't try that they didn't you know add
useful and impactful hitters at this deadline.
That's just false.
That is a straight up why.
Just because you don't like one of the hitters that they added doesn't mean that they
didn't add a quality hitter.
So it's just one of those things where...
Yeah, I think that Justin Turner trade is really underrated.
It's being criminally underrated by fans.
The guy is just a professional hitter who has posted every single year, has a ton of
playoff experience, and is red hot right now.
You got them for nothing.
Yeah, and you got him for literally no offense to RJ Shrek, but you got him for nothing that you're going to lose sleep over.
So I think that's a really, really solid addition.
And as we're speaking, Justin Turner just said an RBI single, give the Mariners a one nothing lead.
There we go.
We're thrown out at second, trying to stretch it to a double.
It's now kind of limping around a little bit.
So we'll see.
No, no, no, no, no.
We'll see what happens there.
but you know his first at bat
work hasn't long at bat
it's like 7 8 pitch at bat flips a single
in the right field to score
that's just Turner
that's real yeah that's Turner
in a nutshell so hopefully
you didn't just pull a hammy in his first at bat
we'll see all right so
let's continue talking about our thoughts here
in just a moment but first a reminder

All you have to do to find that is search the word Mariners.
And you catch us here on the Lockdown Marrars podcast shortly after the game.
So we're talking about our,
or we're going over our closing thoughts on the deadline here.
Now that it's,
it's passed,
it's over with looking just kind of around the league and specifically the American
League,
quite a few teams were obviously very active.
But when you look at the,
final tally for each team and what they ultimately brought in over the course of july not even
just at the at the deadline today i don't think you can make an argument for any other team that
made as much of an impact on their roster via trade this month than the mergers yeah uh now the issue
with that of course is the bears were also arguably the team that needed the most help right so
that kind of goes hand in hand, right?
So for me, if we had to give the Mariners a grade on this deadline,
I'd give them a B.
Overall, like in a vacuum, I would give this deadline an A.
And if this offense was just average,
I would probably give this deadline an A.
But the problem is the offense wasn't average,
wasn't even close to average,
heading into this deadline.
So given the context of all the help that they needed,
again,
like we just talked about,
I think they needed at least one more bat.
So because they didn't get that extra bat,
I think it's a B.
Sure.
I think that's fair.
I would say this.
Like,
is there any combination of players that were moved?
That you would have said like,
yes,
the mayor's offense is now average.
Because, again,
we're not talking about going from,
you know,
getting closer to average,
right?
Right.
But we're not talking about going
from 19th to 13th.
We're talking about
No, no.
30th.
Yeah.
15.
I don't think there's a combination of players that that got moved that do that.
But you're right.
I do think that they probably needed to add at least one more bat.
Yeah, boy.
Whether that's, whether that's Jay's, whether that's Lane Thomas, whether that's ICF, whether that's a med Rosario, whoever, right?
Sure.
Or, you know, yeah, Rosario, you know, any of the bats that got moved that were above average, that would have been fine.
That would have been helpful and that would have been useful and you would have found a way to make it work and all that stuff.
But I'm not going to criticize them for not trading for a player who wasn't traded at all.
So like I'm not going to hold it against them if they didn't get Diaz, if they didn't get loud, that they didn't get Vlad or Rinkifo.
Like those guys weren't moot.
So I'm not going to hold that against them.
But what I will say is that like based on what was available to them, what they paid to acquire it.
And, you know, how this team looks now versus how it did.
a month ago i think a b is is really fair i think that's a fair grade um if they had added you know
like rosario or kind of phlefa probably b plus a minus if they had added somebody a little bit better
than chargua although again with the prices of the bullpins the bullpen pieces that got moved today
i mean it's hard to not it's hard to blame them for not going out and getting tanner scott
when you look at that deal and you're like i mean okay well that's harry ford and you know uh
that's harry for that's tie pete that's low
Logan Evans that's you know and it's just like no.
And I think when you look at it like they got probably the best what what do we say
probably the third or fourth best bat on the deadline and Rosarena for a couple of
years and they got him for like good prospects. I'm not saying but they didn't have to like
well he's probably he's probably the second best bat because like are we really going to say
like I know the WRC plus this year says otherwise but are we really going to say that
randy or Rosarena is a worse hitter than a med Rosario and Isaiah Connor for
no no right so no so.
Yeah, and what's probably the best way is they got the second biggest star
Hit her moved at this deadline and you could argue that he's a bigger star than Paredes more name recognition
So yeah whatever any any way you want to dice it they did that without he's he's he is the marquee name that moved at the deadline
Yes, I would say that's accurate
And they did that without giving up Emerson young Ford Lazz something I don't think without was possible because we looked at this market and we said boy, there's not a lot of
of bats available so these guys can get king's ransom for good but not great hitters and and they got a
good return like they paid for randy rosarena but they didn't pay nearly as much as we thought you look at what
they got or what they had to give up to get jimmy garcia who's probably the third or fourth best reliever
moved to this deadline and you look at what he costs compared to carlos estavis compared to tanner scott
home run like jason adam yeah nothing they got him for nothing compared to those guys uh you look at justin turner they got
them for literally nothing. You look at Chagua, they got them for nothing. So again, this idea that
like they should have leveraged their top prospects for who? Who should they have traded their top
prospects for? Maybe jazz. If you want to argue jazz chishism? Sure. Okay. Sure. But like, are you
really wanting to give up top prospects for Lane Thomas and his 89 WRC plus against Rides? Like,
probably not. Are you willing to give up top prospects for Isaiah counterfelefa? No, and it didn't
cost top prospects. It would have cost a pretty good one, but not an elite one. So I think when you
just look at the totality of what actually changed hands at the deadline, what the Mariners
needs were.
They did very, very well from evaluation standpoint.
Their ball club got better.
They found at least one, I don't want to call it long-term option, but, you know,
multi-year option in a Rose Arena.
They did all that without sacrificing, you know, really anything that they can now use this
winter or anything that could help them in the next year or two.
It's a very successful deadline.
So, yeah, if they had gone out and they'd got.
gotten like if they had gotten mark lighter junior today and had they gotten let's say uh let's
just say i say i say kinder philippa right that's an a that's an a a deadline they didn't so it's like a
a b it's a b plus yeah uh i could see somebody saying b minus to me if you're below a b you're just not
you know willing to accept it i think the i think the i think the b minus or you know anything lower
would come from the people that are underrating the justin turner ad right that he's
He's 39 years old.
He's worthless.
He can't hit even though he's...
Right.
And I still like the age stuff really doesn't apply here to me.
Like it would apply.
It would apply if this was the off season.
Right.
And there's questions about like...
I mean, even then, like what you get in Justin Turner and one year deal and you're like,
oh, he's too old.
But again, we can have the discussion about his age more so like in between seasons rather
than, you know, midseason when he's right.
He's literally one of the hottest.
hitters on planet earth right now for the last six seven weeks so i just i find that that conversation
a bit overblown and honestly just generally boring right like i just i don't think that really
applies here we're talking about can this guy being above average hitter for another two months yeah
when he has been for the last two months right and he has been for pretty much his entire career
yeah yeah i think you can expect that so uh i i think i think jerry and justin did a very nice
nice job. I would say this is their best deadline in their tenure. Maybe not quite as impactful as
that Luis Castillo deal, but the totality, like if they had gotten Castillo, if they had gotten
a Castillo and a Justin Turner at that deadline, I mean, like, they probably go to the World
Series. Like, they were the second best team in the American League at the very least, you know,
odds greatly increase. So this time they got one of the big bats move. They got the Luis Castillo like player
offensively that we were talking about.
And then they added onto it and they got the high leverage arm.
They got solid number two hitter.
Like I really like this deadline.
I think a B is is like I don't, to be honest,
if you're not in the B range, if you're an A or if you're a C or whatever,
I think you're being a little bit dishonest with yourself.
To me, like this is very clearly like a B deadline.
But you want to say B plus, B minus fine, whatever.
But if you're like a C minus or A plus, like no, I think you're being too critical or
like too optimistic.
But I think it's just a really solid deadline and look at what the rest of the
American League did.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So let's do a quick rundown of that.
And I want to specifically talk about the Astros and Rangers here in a second.
But so the, the Orioles they went and added Zach Eflin, Sir Anthony Dominguez, Christian
Pache, Trevor Rogers, Eloy Jimenez, and Austin Slater.
The Slater deal was like a buzzer beater for them.
Yeah.
He had already been traded once.
the Reds and the Reds flipped him just now into the Orioles.
The Guardians had a solid deadline.
Lane Thomas, Alex Cobb.
Those are two really solid gets to just kind of complement what else they have going on on
that roster.
The Astros got Yusay Kakucci and Caleb Ferguson.
Ferguson is a reliever from the Yankees they got today.
They apparently were trying to make a push for Yandi Diaz, but of course that didn't
happen.
Yankees came away with Jazz Chisholm and Mark Leiter.
Royals got Michael Lorenzen.
Hunter Harvey, Lucas Ayrseg, and Paul D. Young.
Red Sox got Danny Jansen, Lucas Sims, Quinn Priester,
Louis Garcia, James Paxson, and Trey.
I always forget how to pronounce this guy's last name, Wingenter?
Winger.
Yeah, I think so.
I don't know.
Yeah. Twins got Trevor Richards.
They hardly did anything, apparently.
That front office has no money to work with.
And the Rangers got Carson Kelly and Andrew Chaffin,
but of course they kind of bought and sold.
the same time, you know, Michael Lorenzen
to the Royals, of course.
So again, you know, you look at what
the AL did, like I have a hard
time saying that any other team, but the
Mariners, or any
other team made more of an impact
to their roster this month
via trade than the Marriers did.
Yeah, I like what the
Yankees did. I think those are two
solid ads, although, you know,
the jazz playing third base thing feels a little
forced, but whatever.
So I don't like the
Orioles deadline.
I think it's a lot of names.
Yeah.
I don't know if it's a lot of impact.
Yeah.
It just feels like a lot of roster turning.
Yeah, because keep mind, they're going to have to make moves, 40 man moves and, you know,
demotions and stuff like that to accommodate all these guys.
And by the way, since we're talking about like, why didn't the Mariners overpay since
they have all these prospects?
Why didn't the, I mean, the Orioles did overpay for Trevor Rogers today.
But like, in general, like, why didn't they, you know, why didn't they go out and overpay for more
impacts, right, with all the prospects they have.
Because they already have the best team in bait, but it's like, okay, well, why did they go
overpay for Tariq Scoobel or Blake Snell or, you know, so.
I can't even imagine what Tariq Scoopal costs that I don't, I don't, yeah, I don't think
there is a package out there that exists that could get Tariq School.
No.
Yeah.
All right.
So let's talk about the Astros and the Rangers, though, because that's who ultimately,
you know, is most important here with regards to the.
errors.
So the
Astros made one of the
most baffling trades
of this whole deadline process
yesterday.
They bring in our old buddy
Usai Kikuchi for
Jake Bloss, who's like a fringe top
100 prospect.
Joey Loperfito, who's helped them at the
major league level, has cooled off lately, but
overall has helped the asteros,
especially in the absence of
Kyle Tucker.
And they also get Will Wagner.
who is of course the son of Billy Wagner,
middle infielder, 26 years old,
but he's close to the big leagues.
He might help the Blue Jays
or be able to play at the big league level
for the Blue Jays at some point later this year.
That's a lot for two months of Kikuchi,
who has been dreadful over his last, what, seven starts?
Yeah, give a take.
So obviously the Astros needed to get better,
specifically in their rotation
because they've just been so decimated by injuries.
I mean, they have a rotation
worth of guys on the IL right now.
But yeah, Kukuchi ended up being that guy.
And for what they paid for him, don't really like that.
It's funny.
Jack Flaherty went for significantly less and he's probably better.
Oh, he is better.
Yeah.
So like, so we like you say, the person.
And he's certainly capable of going on runs where he looks like, you know,
a number two, sometimes even a number two, mostly number three at his best.
but he's also, as we know, wildly inconsistent.
He's probably you can most trust him to be a number four
because there are times where he doesn't look like a big leaguer,
then there are times where he's a number two.
And that's been pretty consistent for his entire career.
And they gave up, you know, six years of a guy
who's already performing a little bit at the big leagues.
They gave up what was going to be their number two prospect,
according to baseball America,
you know, major league ready starting pitcher.
And then they gave up a really interesting role.
reliever who could be in the big leagues by the end of this year too.
So they very well may have given up three big leaguers, all of whom having six years of
club control left for two months of a wildly inconsistent and struggling, you say,
Kukuchi.
But yeah, I do feel like Seattle had the best deadline.
But that's, we don't compare deadlines to grade, right?
It's not the Mariners have an A deadline because they had the best deadline in the American
League.
Well, if everybody in the American League had a bad deadline, and,
you had an okay one. And again, the context of where the mirrors were before the deadline and where they
are now matters, right, especially relative to the grade. So again, that's why they get, that's why
they get a B. They overall had the best deadline of any AL contender, but it's still a B because they
probably should have done at least one more thing. Right. There's probably a couple more things.
They should have been a little more aggressive on. But ultimately, you know, we just have a lot of
questions that we're not going to have answers to for a while.
But I would say this, Ty, at the end of the day,
I think this is the most important point we can make.
Did the Mariners gain ground on the rest of the American League?
Yes.
Yep.
Absolutely.
So to me, that's at least a day.
Well, and let's also acknowledge this real quick before we get out of here.
And this episode is going to have to be edited down because we're well over time.
It's not going to look like that probably by the time that you're watching this.
But right now as we're recording this, we are well, we are well over time.
but whether or not they got another bat this will still go in to be the case they still need at least a couple of these guys who haven't been performing to pick it up right so Jorge Polanco who obviously has picked it up lately but he but he's he's got to keep it going you know Mitch Garver Luke Rayley Josh Rojas Mitch Hanager at least two of those guys have to get it together yep so that's assuming Victor Robles stays relatively right productive
So, yeah, the Mariners, they, you know, and that was always the case, right?
As we've always said, you can't completely rebuild an offense in one summer.
So you're going to have to kind of pick and choose the guys you think have the best shot to help you.
And, you know, Polanco so far, starting to figure some things out.
Hanager recently, better.
Not good, but better.
And then hopefully you get Julio and JP, they can come back and perform.
And you only really need with the way the lineup looks right now, if you get two,
two of those like seven guys we just listed to hit to the back of their baseball card,
I think you have a very close to average offense.
And that's all you need.
That's all you need with this pitching staff.
So that is going to do it for our show.
