You are Locked-on Mariners.
Your daily Seattle Mariners podcast.
Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Well, Mariners fans, we are officially in uncharted waters.
With three games to play, thanks to the Baltimore Orioles and the New York Yankees,
the Mariners control their own destiny.
With a sweep of the Los Angeles Angeles of Anaheim this weekend,
the Mariners are at least guaranteed a game 163 against a red,
Sox for possession of the American League's second wild card.
In a few days' time, a 19-year-long nightmare may finally come to an end.
And this is the best shot they've had to end what is now the longest playoff drought
in a major American sports.
I believe, they believe, and the city of Seattle believes.
And this is the moment we've all waited for.
And it's here now right in front of us, right for the taking.

On today's episode of Lockdown Mariners,
we're going to get you set for everything you need to know about this weekend,
this incredible weekend at Team Mobile Park.
We're talking Angels Mariners.
We're talking playoff scenarios.
And we're even going to talk about our feelings.
overall about this moment and what it means to us as fans.
If you like what you hear, give the show a follow or subscribe wherever you're listening to this.
We greatly appreciate it.
And before we get into today's topics, I want to give a shout out to the Mariners subreddit
for coming up with a great idea to thank the Orioles in the city of Baltimore for taking
two or three from the Red Sox this week by donating to the University of Maryland Children's
Hospital.
I joined in last night, donated,
and I encourage you to join me as well in doing so
if you have the means, if you're able to do it,
if you're comfortable doing so.
I will leave a link to their donation page
in the description of this episode
if you are interested in supporting that.
But Colby, huge, massive, incredibly important series.
Honestly, words can't even describe
how huge this is in the history of the Mariners,
the lore of the Mariners,
For the first time in a long time, the Mariners aren't dependent on any team really helping them out.
Of course, to win the second wild card outright, they're going to need help from the nationals.
They're going to need the nationals to win one game against the Red Sox,
and they're obviously going to have to win out.
Talk about the series.
What are your feelings as they head into a series with an Angels team that's missing my trout,
Anthony Rendon, Shohei Otani is not going to be.
pitching. What is the plan here for the Mariners heading into the series? How are they going to get this done?
How are they going to get this crucial, crucial sweep? You know, it's, it's certainly the biggest
three-game stretch in, you know, recent history, probably since 2001. You know, this is the latest
they've gone into the season in control of their own destiny since 2001. So, been 20 years. And, you know,
I think they kind of, you know, you ride the horse that got you there.
And that's pretty good starting pitching, followed by a great bullpen in timely hitting.
And that's how you're going to have to win this game.
And thankfully, they're going to have some help because it sounds like we can expect a sellout crowd tonight.
The Saturday and Sunday games have already announced over 40,000 tickets sold.
So it sounds like a reasonable chance here that we're going to get three sellout games here.
The city is bought in, you know, the mayor, the mayor,
Mariners have been bought in for a while now,
but the city is behind them.
And really, you know,
they're finally starting to get the respect they deserve
from some of the national guys,
although, you know,
there's still promos running out there
where the Mariners look like they literally have been thrown in
at the last second because you have to respect them now.
But yeah, it's, it's a fun weekend.
And, you know, all Seattle can do is win.
You win, win three.
I think there's a very strong chance
that you're headed to New York
to face the Yankees on Tuesday because it's really tough to feel good about, you know,
what the Red Sox are doing right now.
And so it would not shock me if they dropped at least one of those games.
And you don't even have to worry about the Blue Jays if you win your three games.
The Blue Jays are out.
So, yeah, it's huge, but it's going to come down to pitching and timely hitting,
just like it has all year for the Mariners.
Sure would be great if somebody like Kyle Seeger could have a nice series
because he was awful against the athletics.
But yeah, it's all about that pitching and, you know,
using an already tax bullpen.
And unfortunately, you're probably going to have to tax them even further
because you need these games.
There is no tomorrow.
So you got to put everything you can into winning tonight.
And then you got to do it all again tomorrow.
So whatever it takes to win tonight, you do it.
And then you do it again tomorrow.
It's not the best position to be in, but it's the one you're in.
So you got to do what you've got to do what you've got to.
to do. So be aggressive with the bullpen if you have to. Don't be afraid to, you know,
lose some defense if you really need a, if you really have a matchup you like at the plate late in
the game, you just kind of have to roll with it and take what happens. But yeah, it's going to come
down to the Mariners doing what they've done really all year, but especially for the last, you know,
15 days or so. Just pitch the heck out of it, get the starter out of the game, beat up on the bullpen.
hold on at the end of win.
So it's going to be Jose Suarez
versus Marco Gonzalez tonight
at what may be a near
sold out crowd at Team Mobile Park.
And then Jonathan Diaz
versus Chris Flexen tomorrow.
And then we don't know who's going to be starting
on Sunday for the Angels just yet.
It's going to be Tyler Anderson for the Mariners,
however.
But Shohei Otani is not going to be pitching in that game.
And how much of a boon is that for the
Mariners here.
It's huge.
It's absolutely huge.
Otani was probably the toughest game to win left on the schedule.
And then you find out he's not pitching.
And then the Mariners beat Montas that night.
And they have the advantage here.
Suarez has been pretty good this year.
And Diaz is the guy who went seven innings against him in the blowout loss.
And then he only gave up one run.
But he's a control soft tossing guy who doesn't have,
fantastic stuff.
So in theory, you should be able to jump on him.
Suarez is kind of a weird,
fluky reverse split guy.
So we'll see if,
you know,
if Scott wants to roll with Dylan Moore still,
or if he wants to,
you know,
play the reverse split and have,
you know,
Jake Bowers or Jake Frealy in there.
So, and then,
yeah,
just not having to face Otani.
It sounds like it's going to be Pachy Notton,
I believe is,
is going to be the starter on Sunday.
Which, again,
is just a huge, you know, gift for the Mariners.
You know, the offense is prone to struggle against anybody.
So just because you have these favorable pitching matchups
doesn't mean that you're guaranteed to score runs.
And Anaheim's bullpen is decent, at least.
It's not a travesty.
They have some guys out there.
So, yeah, it's one of those things that the matchups definitely favor you.
but, you know, the offense doesn't really seem to care who's on the mound,
with the exception of Cole Irvin.
There's a good chance that they're going to struggle.
So, yeah, the matchups are in their favor,
but you guys still got to put up the quality at bats
and you still got to score runs and cash in early
because these pitchers will give you that opportunity.
You have to take advantage.
Well, seven years ago, the Mariners needed a sweep of the Angels
to make the playoffs,
and they got the sweep, but however, they still needed some help from the Rangers against the A's,
and the Rangers weren't able to get that done, and they ended up missing the playoffs by a game.
But this time, they don't need help from the outside.
They just need to get the sweep again.
And with the way that they're playing, you've got to feel pretty good about their chances
and what the circumstances are with the angels.
and for you personally, Colby,
Sunday has the potential
to be your greatest
suck it gift tweet
ever
depending on the circumstances
depending on what actually happens
especially if the Mariners are able
to clench the second wild card outright
be a lot of fun to see
I think that would be quite a
momentous occasion
so we're going to talk
more about the playoff scenario
and all that good stuff in just a moment.

Colby
is there any chance
the Mariners could
clinch the second wild card
before they even go
into Sunday's game
do you think that's not
all realistic
are you keeping an eye on that
not really
because essentially
you would have to win the first two
and Boston would have to lose
the first two
and Toronto would have to lose one
so that's a lot to have happen
and Seattle's already gotten
a lot to go in their favor
you know to their credit
it, they've kept the pressure on.
So, you know, they've, they've forced this, this, you know,
these circumstances to come to fruition.
But, yeah, that seems a bit much to think that they're going to have it clinched on Sunday.
It's not impossible, but it's, it's, it's probably a bit much.
Mm-hmm.
So, you know, I mean, just what are your overall feelings here?
with the Red Sox right now going up against this Nationals team,
which again has taken away a lot of its core pieces,
but still has arguably the best player in baseball
or one of them and Juan Soto playing for them right now
who had just a monster month of September.
And some decent-ish pitching still.
Josiah Gray is going to be on the mound for them tomorrow
against Boston.
and so that's that's going to be a fun one because I do like Josiah great quite a bit
what do you think the likelihood here here is that the is here that the mariners are going to
have a buffer at least to lose one game and still be in it if it comes to that obviously
you want to sweep but right um it's baseball i think it's pretty high uh you know it's tough
to trust the red sox to do anything right now
And so it would be fantastic if you could win tonight and the Red Sox would lose because then that makes Saturday still important and Sunday as well.
But it does give you that buffer.
So it would be nice to kind of allow for the idea that maybe Chris Flexen doesn't have it tomorrow or tonight.
Marco pitching a night or is it flex?
anyways it's it's marco tonight and then chris lex in tomorrow okay so yeah so it would be nice to allow for
that to happen i think there's a pretty decent chance of that i'm going to guess the red sox probably
went tonight uh they're going to lose i think it's probably that that game against gray that uh because
he's got fantastic stuff but uh we'll see you know i i wouldn't have guessed that the oriles
would be able to take two from the red socks um when i was just really hoping that they could get
maybe one.
But yeah, so it's definitely possible that they have a buffer and it would be quite big
if they got it tonight in particular.
But hey, you know what?
If you win one of these games against the Angels, one of the first two, no matter what happens,
you're going into Sunday with a chance to either get to 163 or to clinch still.
So yeah, you got to win one of these first two.
Absolutely.
You probably have to win all three.
but I think there's a non-zero chance
that you end up with a one-game buffer going into Sunday.
So on the mountain night for the nationals is Josh Rogers,
273-year-old lefty, 273 ERA and 29 and two-thirds innings pitch.
He's only thrown five games this year,
allowed nine runs in that time.
I mean, look, the Red Sox failed to muster really any offense
against Alexander Wells and that glorified Little League ballpark
at Camden Yards.
so who knows.
It would be nice if the Orioles could also beat the Blue Jays at least once
and the Blue Jays are four and six in their last 10.
They played the Yankees pretty tough,
had the one comeback the night before last.
And then they jumped out to a lead yesterday,
but then the Yankees exploded for six runs.
Glabertora's Aaron Judge,
John Carlos Stanton, all hitting home runs in that game.
What do you think the likelihood of the Orioles continuing their spoiler-ish into the season here and getting at least one in Toronto?
I mean, again, I think the odds are decent because it's pretty decent odds that all three of these teams are going to lose one game this weekend because that's how baseball works.
It's very difficult to sweep a team.
So, yeah, but ultimately, I don't really care about what the Blue Jays do.
I'll care if the Mariners lose, but until then, I don't care.
They're irrelevant to this conversation if you went out.
So I think there's a pretty good chance.
You know, Baltimore certainly is not packing it in, and they have, you know,
Cedric Mullins is obviously having a fantastic year, and Trey Mancini can hit,
and Ryan Montcassel is starting to hit.
Yep.
And so, I mean, they have these legitimate bats.
and you know, they have some talented young pitchers that they can throw at you.
And yeah, I feel like there's a decent chance that they can take one from Toronto.
And that would be helpful.
But ultimately, I don't, ultimately, I don't really care, to be quite honest.
The Mariners drop one of these first two, then I'll care.
But until then, I don't.
I'm not worried about what Toronto's doing.
Yeah.
Yeah, for sure.
Like I said, at the top of the show, this is uncharted waters.
So we are all learning.
I'm sure a lot of you that are listening and us,
this is very much new territory for a lot of us.
So we're going through it together.
And we're going to talk more about, you know,
what this moment just means in general for Colby and I,
for the city, for this team,
all of that in just a moment.

Welcome back to Lockdown Mariners.
Thank you so much for making us your first listen of the day.
Colby, it's been a long 19 years.
And again, with the sweep of the angels, you're at least getting into one game
63 and there's probably going to be a debate to be had of
of whether or not that's considered the end of the playoff drought.
Technically, it wouldn't be,
but I'm sure a lot of people will look at it as an end of the playoff drought.
It's definitely a playoff game if you get to a game 163,
even if it's not technically called that.
But to be able to end this 19-year drought this weekend,
can words even express what that would mean to you?
I don't know.
It would,
it's obviously something that's going to be
pretty emotional for a lot of people.
I know I'll be,
I'll be there on Sunday and,
you know,
win or lose,
playoffs or not,
I'll probably shed a few tears.
It's,
it's been an incredible ride.
And, you know,
the journey is,
is always the fun part of any trip.
It's really the journey that gets you there.
So,
yeah,
it would be,
emotional if they make it, it's going to be emotional if they don't. But I don't think it's
going to be, you know, necessarily tears of sadness if they don't. I think it's, it's, it's,
you know, you're bummed that this team is over and the team, this team's never going to look the same
again, right? You're going to add pieces to it, which is good. You're going to subtract pieces
from it, which is good. But, you know, this group of guys will never play together again,
once their season officially ends. And that's a bummer because this group of guys is,
is special, quite frankly.
So, yeah, it's one of those, you know, you don't,
you don't cry because it's over.
You cry because it happened.
And it's, it's kind of like that.
But yeah, you know, it's, it would be amazing, obviously, to be at, at T-Mobile
park and, you know, to see Seattle dog pile.
But, you know, decent chance we don't know.
Unless Boston loses one of these first two and you, you went out, you're probably
not going to know that you've glinched.
because Boston, every,
every team plays at the same time
on Sunday. So that adds to the drama.
Every team plays at 12,
10, you know,
Pacific time. So, yeah, there's
going to be drama in that. You're going to be
scoreboard watching while you're watching the Mariners.
It's going to be, it's going to be exhausting.
And it kind of has been already.
So, yeah, I don't know, you know,
how to describe, you know,
what it would mean.
Other than to say, you know,
it would it would mean a lot it would it would be like breathing for the first time in 20 years you know
what i mean it's it's that it's that emotional release of you know finally the monkeys off our back
and now this is this is the new era and even if it is only one extra game one extra playoff game
they go to the yankee stadium they get whipped up on 12 to 4 it doesn't matter because now you
have life. And now you've injected, you know, just hope back into the city with this baseball
team. And you're seeing it right now with the, with the attendance numbers they're expecting this
weekend. People want to buy in and people are buying in. And that is, that, that's life.
And that that is life to your franchise that has been basically dead for the last 15, 20 years.
So it would mean a lot. For me, I haven't lived in the state of Washington for 30,
13 years now.
It's been, you know, I mean, that's most of the, the playoff drought.
And it's been hard to watch from afar, not really being able to connect with them in a way that a lot of fans do to go through that.
It's, it's been strange to, you know, support them from the outside for so long.
And for me, you know, to not be able to.
to go and be a part of this,
it hurts me a lot,
quite honestly.
I've been looking at flights and stuff like that.
It's just,
I think I'd want to go if it's just the playoffs,
but, you know,
I'm so happy for everyone that's there.
For you to be able to go,
Colby,
for everyone that's going, for everyone that's supporting this team,
for everyone that's,
that decided that this team is worth investing in.
because you and I have spent the last three, four years podcasting about this team, talking about this rebuild, talking about Jerry Depoto and what is the plan and all these things.
And that has all culminated to this moment.
And I don't know if they're going to get there or not.
I think they will.
I hope they will.
It's right there in front of them.
And I know a lot of fans are probably, you know, terrified of what could happen this, this weekend.
You know, it's the Mariners after all, right?
You know, I'm sure a lot of people feel that way, you know, and worry about them failing in this weekend.
But it's not a failure, whether they win or lose.
They're here.
They got to this point.
They're going to be a 90-win team, most likely.
and through all of this they have you know despite not having a superstar on their team not having all this
invested in them despite not investing this winter despite their CEO being an absolute scumbag
and you know saying that Marco Gonzalez is very boring and Kyle Seeger's overpaid and all those things
and for their bullpen,
their biggest strength
to be ravaged by COVID in May
and for them to lose
all these heartbreaking games.
You think about the one in Cleveland.
You think about the back-to-back walk-off homers
by Jonah Haim.
You think about the Ump show in New York
when we started Locked-on Mariners.
That was our first episode
was talking about that.
When you think about the failed homestand
against the Diamondbacks on the Red Sox,
to be able to come back from that repeatedly.
In the face of adversity,
when all hope was seemingly lost,
this team has constantly come back
and come back and come back.
And to just even get to this moment
is an incredible achievement.
And I am so proud of this team.
I am proud to be a Mariners fan,
which,
honestly, you can't say that for many years
of the last 20 years.
But I am proud to be a Mariners fan.
And I am so proud of this team.
and I hope that they get in
because they absolutely deserve it.
They've been playing their tails off
over the past month, over the past seven weeks, really.
But in the month of September,
after that homestand,
with the Red Sox and the Diamondbacks,
they have played their hearts out
and have made this a possibility, a reality.
And really, you know,
they deserve it more than the Red Sox, frankly.
The Red Sox have been slumping.
They just got swept by the Yankees.
They just lost two or three to one of the worst teams in baseball.
The Red Sox have had their time.
Really.
I think it would be okay for the baseball gods to let the Mariners have this one game.
And I think they're going to do it.
I really do think that they're going to do it.
And whenever that is, whenever they officially clinched,
whether it's tomorrow night and, you know,
miracle happens and it's tomorrow night or it's Sunday afternoon and we're all watching the scoreboards
and 40,000 plus people are at T-Mobile Park losing their minds. I'll be up here in Toronto,
away from the team as I have been for the past 13 years, bawling my eyes out just like I'm
there right on the field with them because I've been waiting for this. I was five years old
the last time the mirrors were in the playoffs. I don't remember a thing about it.
So this for me personally, and I'm sure it's like this for a lot of Mariners fans out there, is everything I've dreamed of.
You know, it's it's something that I've dreamed of for 20 years now.
I've dreamed of the Mariners dogpiling on one another, knowing that they're going to the playoffs.
I haven't even thought about a World Series, you know.
This has been the end game mostly for me, was just getting to the postseason.
And we can worry about championships and all that stuff later on down the line.
Let's just get there.
Let's just get to the dance because that's all I would be grateful for.
I don't, like you said, I don't care if they get absolutely smoked by the Yankees on Tuesday.
I do not care whatsoever.
Just get to the dance.
Just get there.
Make it known.
You're legit.
And you've already done that.
You've already let Major League Baseball know that you're a problem, that you're going to be a problem for years to come.
but why not get in the dance
see what happens
who knows
chaos ball reigns supreme
and who knows what chaos ball
looks like in the postseason
I wouldn't put it past this team
to go into New York and beat the Yankees
why not
chaos ball
that's the answer for everything this year
because really this year has made no sense
whatsoever
everything that has happened this year
all the adversity they've overcome
it would kill any other team
but they're here
they're standing
they believe
I believe
you believe Colby
we all believe
in this team
and
you know
by the time that we get back
on the mics on Monday
I feel pretty good
that we're going to be
in a new world
if you will
a new age
of Mariners baseball
one that isn't
predicated on
sorrow
it's no longer the days of Mike Karp and Sean Figgins.
It's a legitimate threat brewing in the Pacific Northwest,
one that's going to rain over Major League Baseball over the ALS for years to come.
So before we hop off here, Colby, anything you want to add?
Believe.
Believe, baby.
