Starting point is 00:00:49 All you have to do to check that out is click the link in the description of this episode. So the mayor has beat the White Sox 8 to 3 last night. We'll talk about Brian Wu in the offense. Then we've got some positive injury updates to go over. That's pretty cool. and we also need to talk a little bit about this bullpen, which is not very cool, but we'll save that for later on in the show.
Starting point is 00:01:12 I want to start with Mr. Wu, who goes seven innings in this one, 22nd time this season, he has gone six plus, gave up a home run in the first inning to Lenin Sosa, but that was one of only two hits against Brian on the night by the White Sox. for the remaining six and two-thirds innings of his night. He only gave up one other hit.
Starting point is 00:01:37 Nine strikeouts, that ties a career high, no walks, quite a few hard hit balls. But again, like I said, Wu went through this White Sox lineup that we said yesterday has been hot coming out of the All-Star break and more or less silenced them. It was a really big night for Brian. One he certainly needed.
Starting point is 00:01:57 He hasn't been good really since the, the All-Star break. I know he had a decent start in there against the Angels, but the other two were just disasters, including the last one where he gave up four home runs to Sacramento. So, yeah, he really needed a night like last night. And it didn't start out great. He gave up the home run to Sosa, like he said,
Starting point is 00:02:18 and it was basically a carbon copy of the ones he gave up in Sacramento. It was just a fastball that ran over the middle of the plate. And again, it doesn't matter how hard you throw. It doesn't matter what your arm's slot is. what have you, if you throw that pitch over and over again, it's going to get obliterated. These guys are too good.
Starting point is 00:02:34 Even bad major leaguers are going to hit that pitch more often than not. They're going to do damage against it as well, and that happened last night. And so you're kind of sitting there going, uh-oh, like I've seen this before. But thankfully, he was able to dial in pretty quick after that.
Starting point is 00:02:49 And then really started to dial in that top rail of the strikes zone with the fastballs. I mean, he threw 83 pitches last night, 71 of them were fastball. balls. It's ridiculous. Mostly, mostly four seamers. Obviously, you mixed in a bunch of two seamers as well, but it was just fastball, fastball, fastball. You know, maybe because the two seamer kept on running back over the plate, he just didn't feel like he had a good enough feel for it. So he just decided to just stick to the four seamer. And again, he had great feel for that right at the top of the
Starting point is 00:03:20 zone for pretty much the entire night. We saw some hard contact, but it's mostly fly balls out to medium, you know, medium depth outfield. Because when Wu's at the top of that zone with that velocity from that arm angle, it's very tough to square that pitch up and do actual damage to it. Usually you're going to swing through it or you're going to pop it up and that's what happened last night.
Starting point is 00:03:40 So Wu really needed an outing like last night for no other reason than to, you know, get back on track and hopefully find some confidence in the foreseamer again. Like he said, the slider was fine. He actually had a decent slider last night. It just he only threw it. Six times, seven times.
Starting point is 00:03:58 Yeah. Yeah. So just didn't really need to. It was just here's the fastball, try and hit it. Got a couple of whips on it, by the way. Yeah. You know, it's funny. You remember the like two or three years ago, Luis Castillo,
Starting point is 00:04:11 threw something like 50 straight fastballs in a game. That was also against the White Sox. And so it was kind of a, you know, part two of that madness. But Wu just went right after these guys, no fear. made the adjustment. I believe the adjustment was simply just to go with the four seamer over the two seam or more. And it really worked well. And again, he probably could have given you another inning if you really needed it from him last night.
Starting point is 00:04:37 But the mayor decided to take him out after seven, 22 starts to start the year. And he's gone six or more in all of them. So it's really impressive stuff from Brian Wu, who just continues to grow as a pitcher. and we know he has this type of stuff in him, and he can do this any time he goes out on the mound. But he does still need to work on that two-seamer. It's an important pitch for him, particularly against lefties. He needs to get that on the front hip again relatively soon.
Starting point is 00:05:07 But last night, it was just, I'm just going right after you, and I bet you can't hit me. And they couldn't. He was really good at this night. And, you know, the Mariners needed to start like that. And Brian Wu needed to start like that. And he gave them exactly what they needed. and he really just gave the White Sox no shot to win.
Starting point is 00:05:26 It wasn't a huge swing and miss night for him either. He got quite a few called strike threes. He had 14 called strikes last night on top of the, what, 13 whiffs that he had. So let's say called strike plus whiff rate of 33%. That is very good. So very efficient night for Brian. You know, again, going seven full innings on just 83 pitches while using primarily your four-scene fastball is kind of nuts.
Starting point is 00:05:54 Especially again, I know it's the white socks, but like we said last night, this lineup has been cooking. A lot of these guys have been very, very hot for the last two, three weeks. And yeah, he made them for the most part look like a JV baseball team. Yep. It was a lot of fun to watch. Nice sight to see here.
Starting point is 00:06:17 Because again, like you said, two of the last three starts have been rough, for Brian. So nice to see him get back on the horse. Like we said yesterday, this was going to be a nice opportunity for him to do that. And he answered the bell and then some. And we'll see what he looks like in the final game against the, uh, the raise this weekend. All right. So let's talk about this offense because they scored eight last night. They were a lot of fun to watch. A trio of home runs. They were able to move the line a little bit. Go over that in just a moment. But first, a reminder of this episode of the lockdown Marrace podcast is brought to you by game day. Hugh. Today's episode is brought to you by Game Day Hugh, and so is this hat that I'm wearing.
Starting point is 00:06:57 For Marriss fans like me, this one hits the mark. Game Day Hugh makes clean, no logo gear with team-inspired colorways for every pro and college fanbase. It's all about letting your colors speak for you. No giant logos, just smart, versatile style that works on Game Day on the course or anywhere in between. The hat pairs perfectly with my usual gear. And you're listening to the Lockdown Marrars podcast for instant reactions following every Mariners game. Be sure to tune into the Mariner's postcast with Anderson,
Starting point is 00:08:10 Hearse and Christopher Crawford, available on both the Lockdown Marys YouTube and podcast feeds. It was a big night for the Mariners offense last night. They score eight. They get five specifically. off of Davis Martin who like we talked about yesterday held them to just two over seven and a third the last time they saw him back in Chicago a couple of months ago they were able to put the ball over the wall against him a couple of times Domkan zone broke the ice for the
Starting point is 00:08:40 mariner's with a solo home run he had a couple of hits on the night five mariners hitters in total had multi-hit games in this one Julio with a couple of hits Josh Naylor with a couple hits, Polanka with a couple of hits, Canzone, like I mentioned, and Cole Young as well, who continues to swing a hot bat. And honestly, that's 7 through 9 and the mayor's lineup has been the most consistent part of their lineup
Starting point is 00:09:03 since the trade deadline, which is really funny. J.P. didn't have a good night last night, but overall, J.P. has been pretty good on this homestand. Obviously, you have the big series against the Rangers. But yeah, this was a lot of fun to watch. And obviously, the new guys
Starting point is 00:09:19 came through, new-ish guys, when we're talking about Gino, obviously. But Gino with his first home run back in a marriage uniform, that was really nice to see because he's been so close. He was really close to putting a couple over the wall against the Rangers. Just fell a few feet shy of doing that. But this one, he left no doubt about it to make it 3-1 Mariners relatively early on in this one. Josh Naylor with a big night, a couple of hits,
Starting point is 00:09:47 including a two-run home run to add some insurance for the Mariners. in the bottom of the seventh inning. Nice little bat flip too. And once again, stealing bases. Josh Naylor has turned into Billy Hamilton ever since he put on a Mariners uniform. I believe, correct me if I'm wrong down in the comments below. And I know you guys love to do that.
Starting point is 00:10:10 But I believe he is leading the league and stolen bases since joining the Mariners. Which is crazy because this guy has, what he's third percentile and sprint speed this year he is going to get to 20 steals on the season he might get there by the end of the series the way he's going again third percentile on sprint speed this might be the most unlikely 20 stolen base season we've ever seen I don't know that's probably hyperbole but still like this is insane what josh nailer is doing and the rate that he's stealing bases at is insane.
Starting point is 00:10:52 He is a lot of fun, and he became the first multiple games with multiple stolen bases. Yeah. Dude's nuts. Like, in more ways than one. He's stealing these bases,
Starting point is 00:11:09 and they're not even close. Like, it's not like he's barely, you know, sneaking in there. He's beating these throws by, you know, in baseball terms,
Starting point is 00:11:18 a mile. And it's just, he's getting these incredible, jumps. We saw him yesterday, bait a second pickoff move over to first base and then just immediately take off knowing that they couldn't throw over. And he left early, knowing that he wasn't going to throw over. And he had that base stolen pretty easily. And then he kind of, you know, what was it? One pitch later, two pitches later takes off and steals third because nobody's paying attention to him. Like the guy is just an incredibly savvy base runner. And so we talk about
Starting point is 00:11:46 a lot. You know, sometimes people say, oh, well, or people think like, if you're a good base runner, means you can steal bases. No, those are two different skills. But Josh Naylor is a good base runner who can steal bases, which is all funnier because usually when those two things are true, it's because they have really great foot speed.
Starting point is 00:12:05 And Josh Naylor does not. So that just goes to show you how great of a base runner Nailer is. And I think you could argue, because of the number of steals he has with the speed that he actually does possess, Nailer might be the best base runner in baseball. he's incredibly savvy he understands the rules he understands pitchers and he understands pickoff moves and all that stuff and when a pitcher might throw over he's taking advantage I mean heck at the rate he's going he might get to 30 steals this year so yeah it really
Starting point is 00:12:39 is something to see and it's fun that you know nailer has found a way to contribute even when it's not the way you would expect. The offense hasn't quite been what you would hope for, although obviously he had a great night last night, and you hope that he's starting to figure out Team Mobile Park a little bit with the batters eye and whatnot. But yeah, like he's helping you with the bat. He's been a huge plus defensively over what you've had there for most of this year.
Starting point is 00:13:09 And he's also adding eight stolen bases in 10, 11 days is wild. So, yeah, he has been everything you could hope for. And he certainly looks like a guy that the Mariners should probably be trying to get a deal done with before he tests for agency. We'll see if he's even open to that. If the Mariners are open to that, who knows. But it does seem like something they might want to explore because he seems to be a really good fit for this club. And the power and whatnot at Team Mobile Park is certainly nice. plays very well at team mobile.
Starting point is 00:13:46 It's just a matter of whether or not he can do it consistently enough as he adjust with the, again, the batter's eye and the Marine layer and all that stuff. So I will see how he feels. But, yeah, I would certainly be hoping that the Mariners are at least willing to explore those,
Starting point is 00:14:02 those possibilities. But he's been everything you could have hoped for and more, but in kind of a different way than you were hoping for, which is fine because he's still been a very valuable ad. And, yeah, Josh Naylor is he's a different dude in more ways than one. I know you guys have been wondering about the extension thing or just, you know, retaining both Gino and Josh.
Starting point is 00:14:24 I get asked about it pretty much anytime I mention those guys on Twitter. I feel like I get at least a couple of replies about like, what are my thoughts on that? Look, we are going to beat that topic into submission over the course of the off season. Let's save that for then. Let's just enjoy the ride for now. And we'll see, hey, maybe if the mayor is going to, work something out here before the end of the season.
Starting point is 00:14:44 We'll talk about that when it happens. But look, we are going to talk about that until the cows come home this off season. So don't worry. But yeah, I don't want to, you know, just get out ahead of that right now. So we'll have plenty of time to go over that. Anyway, you and I are both in an agreement. You know, it was another rough night for Cal, three strikeouts for him. Nice to see that the offense could still put up eight when Cal is doing next to nothing.
Starting point is 00:15:12 but you and I are both in agreement that they should move them down a little bit here in the lineup. How far down, though? Fifth. Yeah. I think you put Naylor too. Naylor or Polanco. Yeah. Yeah, Polo's been really swinging a hot bat lately.
Starting point is 00:15:31 Again, like I said, a couple more hits last night had the two RBI single. Yeah, I mean, I guess the nice thing about Naylor is that you're like, well, you know, typically you want the number two guy. be able to run a little bit. And like obviously Naylor doesn't have foot speed, but he is, again, a terrific base runner and he can definitely steal bases. So yeah, Naylor would be great. Polo is swinging the bat really well right now.
Starting point is 00:15:56 So yeah, I think moving Cal down to fifth while he kind of tries to work through some things, you could hit him fourth. I just, you know, because it's not like Gino is tearing the cover off the ball right now as well. So, but yeah,
Starting point is 00:16:10 I just think Cal has been, pretty bad since the all-star break. And even before the all-star break, he was, you know, finding a way to contribute. He was hitting a home run here and there. But the at-bats have just looked consistently worse and worse for about a month now. And that could be a lot of wear and tear. As we know, he really hasn't gotten many true days off this year.
Starting point is 00:16:31 So, you know, that could be that. It could just be a slump as well. And obviously, pitchers are starting to kind of figure out how to attack him. And he hasn't made that adjustment quite yet. So, yeah, I would say that I think you move him down to fifth for a little while, let him work through some things. But at the very least, he shouldn't be hitting second. Like, even if you only want to move him down to third or fourth, fine, he shouldn't be getting the second most at-bats on the team because he's not your second-best hitter right now. And he hasn't been for about a month.
Starting point is 00:16:58 So, yeah, I think it's time to just be like, yeah, it's a slump. And it's not just like, oh, you know, he's so close to figuring it out. like, no, he's really not. I mean, again, if you want the optimistic view of last night's game, he just missed a couple of homers. One hooked foul and he had a couple hard hit balls last night. Obliterated a ball on a line to the warning track, just got too much top spin on it, not enough backspin.
Starting point is 00:17:26 And he did have like a 9-10 pitch at bat as well. So again, if you want the positive spin on it, there it is. But at the end of the day, over five with three strikeouts, like, in a way you want to slice it. And this has been kind of a continuation of who Cal has been. And what is it, 10 strikeouts in the last three games? Yeah, I mean, it's, it's, it's, it's time to move him down. Like, no, it takes some of the pressure off of him.
Starting point is 00:17:49 And heck, I don't know, maybe even give him a full day off because we talked about this. Like, you could take how we're all you out of this lineup entirely. Still a pretty good lineup. I mean, that's basically what happened last night. Yeah. I mean, more or less. So, you know, maybe give Garber, you know, a start more than he normally would. I'm kind of surprised that he started yesterday when the marriage could have given him two full days off, like, and only had to miss one game.
Starting point is 00:18:14 That feels like an opportunity they're going to have to take more and more. Obviously, you know, day game tomorrow. So it'll be interesting to see if they DH Cal or if they just give him tomorrow off entirely. I kind of hope it's the latter, but that might also depend on how tonight goes. But, yeah, Cal has not been good for about a month now. I mean, he's finding ways to contribute still. He's not a total black hole. He still takes his walks, still run into a home run.
Starting point is 00:18:43 The defense is actually starting to look a lot more similar than it to last year than it did in the first couple months. But, yeah, so, I mean, he's still finding a way to contribute, but he just hasn't been the same guy. And that's, I mean, I guess we probably shouldn't be that surprise because the guy he was for the first three, four months of the season was one of the best players we've ever seen. So, yeah, it's not a shot of Cal, but it's just, you know, for the good of the team and for honestly, probably the good of Cal, he just needs some less pressure put on him and you hit him fifth and kind of let him hit behind these big guys and all that and see if he can figure some things out without having to worry about carrying the lineup, which, you know, so far he hasn't because, again, Mariners are what, four and one since the all or since the deadline. cows contributed basically nothing in those five games offensively. A home run and a big walk and I think that's it. Yeah. The home run too was a wall scraper that just kind of kept on going and like it had a lot of
Starting point is 00:19:47 carry. It's a home run. They all count the same. They all count the same. But like let's not pretend that it was like, oh, that ball is nuked and like he was right on, you know. It is. But I mean, hey, look, cows had like nine or ten knocked down by the wind at Team Mobile
Starting point is 00:20:01 Park this year. So I'm certainly not saying he doesn't deserve to have one go his way. But he just hasn't looked the same for quite a while now. I think it's time to move him down. For sure. I'm totally in agreement there, especially with how much the bottom of the lineup is set in the table. Right now,
Starting point is 00:20:16 he just hasn't been able to come through in those situations than drive those guys in. So I'd rather have Naylor or Polo there right now with the way that they're swinging the bat. All right. So we got some positive injury updates yesterday. We're going to go over those. We're also going to talk a little bit about this bullpen, which is, yeah. In just a moment, but first, a reminder,

And you're listening to the lockdown areas podcast. So Justin Hollander met with the media yesterday before the game and provided a couple of really positive injury updates.
Starting point is 00:21:53 The biggest one, of course, being Victor Robles is apparently way ahead of schedule and is going to start a rehab assignment on August 12th. which is in six days. And the plan there is for him to get about 40 to 50 played appearances. So give or take about 15-ish games. So I don't know. End of August, September 1st, kind of the target area there for Robles's return, assuming that everything goes well.
Starting point is 00:22:25 And that is awesome. And that is better than what my expectations were. and I think better than what the mayor's expectations were as well. Like I said, they said that he's way ahead of schedule. Apparently Ryan Bliss is also way ahead of schedule. The mayor has thought that his season was over, but apparently there's a real shot that he's going to be able to go out
Starting point is 00:22:48 on a rehab assignment sometime in September. Now, depending on the timing of that, is he going to be able to make it back to the major league level before the end of the race of season? Who knows? But that's still really cool, because again,
Starting point is 00:23:00 I thought his season was lost. So good for Ryan. I know he's been really putting the work in down in Arizona. So that's really cool that he actually has a shot to get back on the field before the end of the season. But Robillus is obviously the biggest news here. And typically, you know, with guys that have missed as much time as Victor has, I'd go, you know, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:23:24 You can't really assume anything with this guy. but with Victor in particular, while the bat is going to be a massive question mark, obviously, because we don't know how he's going to feel swinging the bat with, you know, the shoulder and all that. There are a couple of things here that you pretty much should be able to bank on. That's the defense and that's what he does on the bases. And that overall is a net positive.
Starting point is 00:23:49 And that's going to help. And that's going to give you an upgrade on your bench right now. So that is very exciting. Again, assuming that, you know, and hopefully nothing goes wrong here over the course of his rehab assignment or he doesn't suffer any setbacks before he goes out on that rehab assignment, that would be huge for the Maris. Yeah, I mean, Robles is, you know, kind of the energy guy. And his loss at the beginning of the year, he didn't seem to affect the Mariners because right after he was lost, You know, the Mariners went on their series win streak. What was it, nine in a row, nine series wins in a row or whatever.
Starting point is 00:24:34 But you really saw this team start to miss him shortly thereafter. And it was, they weren't running as much. And the defense got significantly worse. And they're trying Lioti Tiberis out there. And it's, you know, it's kind of a disaster. And so now that they've kind of managed all that, they weathered it. Dom Kanzone has really stepped up and claimed right field. You actually don't need Victor Ruffer.
Starting point is 00:24:57 Robles to be really anything at the plate. And he'll still provide you more value than Donovan Solano and Dylan Moore right now, unfortunately, and Miles Master Boni, to be quite frank. So he's an instant upgrade to your bench because unlike all those other guys, he is a plus defensive outfielder. And unlike all those guys, except for Dylan Moore, he is a great base runner who can definitely steal bags. And so, yeah, it's one of those things where Robles is,
Starting point is 00:25:26 becomes the primary backup center fielder, which you don't really have on your roster right now. He is the late game replacement for Canzone out in right field, which you kind of desperately need when you get into these tight, close games. And he is probably first guy off the bench against the tough lefty and first guy to run when you need that money bag. So Robles, again, even if he's not going to provide much offensively, at the plate, he's still a significant upgrade over what you have currently on the bench.
Starting point is 00:25:55 And who knows, maybe he hits the ground running. I mean, we've seen Victor Robles carry this offense. I mean, not this one, but like we've seen him carry an offense for months at a time. And if he only has to do that for one month, can he? Sure, it's certainly possible. I wouldn't, again, I wouldn't count on it. It's really tough to just start hitting major league pitching after not doing anything for four months. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:18 Not that he's lazy, but you guys know what I mean. Like, it's tough to just pick that up. But also he's coming off of an injury to his lead shoulder. We don't know how comfortable he's going to feel in the box. Right. But the bottom line, even if he takes zero out bats for you, like he could be a negative WRC plus guy. He's still more valuable than everybody else on the bench besides the backup
Starting point is 00:26:40 catcher, who you have to have. So, yeah, it would be a big plus. And hopefully we see him soon. And, you know, again, just the energy of him coming back, you know, that'll energize the fellas. And yet in Gino and that energy and robo. and you kind of even it out with Randy's kind of cool demeanor and nailers, let's call it intensity.
Starting point is 00:27:06 Yeah. Yeah, I mean, you should have a pretty good clubhouse mix. You never really know how that's going to, how that's all going to mix together until you actually see it. But Victor hasn't been shy about being in the clubhouse and being in the dugout this entire time. And everybody seems to love him. And he will help. Absolutely. There's no question about it.
Starting point is 00:27:22 Again, even if he doesn't really help you offensively. He will help you late in games, particularly out in right field and also on the bases. Absolutely. So I want to quickly talk about Luke Rayleigh. He was set to begin a hitting progression yesterday. Not sure if that actually happened or not, but that was the plan. Just, you know, obviously don't have confirmation that that happened. But that was the plan.
Starting point is 00:27:50 And they believe that he could start a minor league rehab. stent as soon as this weekend. So Rayleigh could be on the way back pretty soon here. And then Bryce Miller obviously had his first rehab start a few days ago. And the be-low actually stuck in the high 90s. So that was really encouraging to see. I know he told our friends over at Circling Seattle Sports that he felt pretty good after that.
Starting point is 00:28:17 And I think the quote that he gave him was, that was it. So we'll see if that carries over into his next start. Hollander said that he's going to. going to need at least two more rehab starts before they think about reinserted him into the rotation. So it seems like we haven't heard the last of Bryce Miller at the major league level this year. I see what the plan is there. But, you know, I think the leash has to be pretty short on him once they add him back to the rotation of it.
Starting point is 00:28:47 You know, if the velo starts to dip again and he looks the way that, you know, he has a lot of the time that we've seen him this year, I think you just got to pull the plug on that. Yeah, at this stage, there's really not much point in getting the surgery a month earlier, though. So at the this point, they might very well might just stick him in the bullpen. Maybe. Because it hasn't really been an issue of, you know, maintaining velocity and command and control for one inning. It's usually the third, fourth, fifth inning. We see that really start to dip.
Starting point is 00:29:16 At least that's what it has been. So, you know, Bryce trying to salvage something, if they can get 20, 24, Bryce Miller, even for just the month of September. and then stick them in the bullpen for hopefully a playoff run, that would be a huge, a huge, you know, variance over what they're getting right now from Logan Evans. I mean,
Starting point is 00:29:37 no disrespect to Logan who had a decent start on Sunday, but 2024 Bryce Miller is a number three. Logan Evans is the number five. Like, there's just no comparison right now. So hopefully Bryce is able to come back and hopefully he does pitch well and he maintains velocity. But at the very least,
Starting point is 00:29:53 he's probably destined to, to be stashed in the bullpen at some point towards the end of the year or even in the playoffs. So either way, that's an arm that can help you, should help you, if he can stay healthy enough, which so far this year hasn't been the case, unfortunately. But, yeah, and then Rayleigh obviously gives you some good speed off of the bench. He gives you good outfield defense off the bench, and he gives you tremendous left-handed power off of the bench, too. So, and who knows, you know, we don't know what his role is going to be when he returns, but is he more valuable to you than Miles Mastroboni?
Starting point is 00:30:32 Yes. Is he more valuable to you than Donovan Slano? Yes. He's more valuable to you than Dylan Moore. Now, if you get Robles and Rayleigh back, Dylan Moore might actually end up surviving the rest of this year, just because there's no reason to give him an app bat once those guys get back. And he's literally there just to play some defense in case I want to pinch hit, you know, Luke Rayleigh for
Starting point is 00:30:54 J. P. Crawford. And it's like, well, now I need a shortstop. Dylan go play shortstop. Yeah. So, yeah, the bench could be getting better. The rotation could be getting better. The bullpen could be getting better. Santos is, is apparently been cleared to throw
Starting point is 00:31:10 and he's had some issues at home that he had to go deal with. So we'll see. Now, the keyword to all those, though, is could. Right. We're running out of time. You know, it's August 6. So, you know, for, For someone like Santos, it's like, all right, how long is it going to take for him to ramp up?
Starting point is 00:31:27 Right. And how much do you trust him even when he does get ramped up? Because if he's not going to pitch in Major League Baseball until September, you really want to throw him out there with a four to two lead in the seventh, where every single win is going to, you know, could be the difference between you making the playoffs and missing it. I don't know. And so there are some, you know, just calm down a little bit here. These guys could help you.
Starting point is 00:31:50 they could also be nothing burgers. And in the case of the pitchers, they could end up ultimately hurting you because they're just not able to produce and you keep going back to them. And they just can't get the job done, probably because of health more than anything. So we'll see how it works out.
Starting point is 00:32:08 But yeah, it was very positive injury news yesterday on some guys who really could help the Mariners down the stretch. And that's great. I wouldn't bank on it. But if you can get three of those four guys to come back and help you, over the last, you know, three to five weeks, that would be massive.
Starting point is 00:32:26 Yeah. So the bullpen. We don't have a ton of time to talk about this, but Casey Legamina obviously had a rough outing against the Rangers the other day and the loss, what on Saturday. Now he was a victim of a lot of soft contact, but still didn't like the decision of putting him in there instead of Caleb Ferguson. Overall, Ligamina has struggled quite a bit this year. You know, he's running an ERA over five right now.
Starting point is 00:32:53 He has been able to strike quite a few dudes out, but still, it's been a rocky road for him. And last night, you know, it's an eight to one game. He's being tasked with just getting through the primarily the bottom of the White Sox order. And he didn't give up any runs last night, but it took him like, what, 38 pitches to get the job done? Loaded the bases. Yeah, a couple of walks. He just, he was non-competitive for a lot of that. ending. Yeah. And then Jackson Coar finally pitched last night and probably gave up a couple of home
Starting point is 00:33:28 runs. So not a good look for, you know, the bottom end of the Mara's bullpen. Yeah. Coar was doing the opposite of what, of what Legamina was. He's just like, I'm up eight to one. I'm not, I'm going to throw these pitches down the middle. Yeah. Yeah. So maybe there's a little bit of an excuse there, but still you can't you can't throw those pitches in those spots. He actually had a very high whiff percentage. So stuff-wise is fine. It's just, you know, you do have to be on the corners a little bit, but with an 8-to-1 lead and clearly him just not wanting to, you know, generate traffic,
Starting point is 00:34:07 I give him a little bit. Like I'd rather you do that than do what Legamina did, which is just nibble, nibble, nibble, and now all of a sudden you're one swing of the bat away from it being Andres Munoz time, whereas Carr is just like, look, they're not going to hit seven solo home runs off of me to tie this. I'm just going to go right after these guys. But yeah, the seven and eighth guys in the bullpen, not great. And even the sixth guy in the bullpen, Carlos Vargas, I know he had a good outing last time out.
Starting point is 00:34:33 He's been pretty touching go. So you're really a couple arms short in that pin. And I don't know where they're going to come from because you don't have this wealth of arms in the minor league system right now that can come up and help you. Well, yeah. And, you know, you trade Burgos, who was one of the guys that you've filtered. been there. You know, you traded Hunter Cranton, who obviously was concussed for most of the year, but he was a guy that you thought might be able to help you at some point in 2025. He's now in Arizona. He just landed on the aisle again with a groin injury with the diamond
Starting point is 00:35:03 backs. Yeah. Brandon Garcia, obviously. Yeah, Brandon Garcia. So yeah, so you're down. Yeah, yeah, no, like, yeah, no, no, no. That's not the commentary here. The commentary is just like, you know, some of the guys that you had as depth, quote, unquote, quote, they're gone now. So you don't really have a ton of guys to really filter through right now. You know, maybe you want to take a shot on like a Tyler Cleveland or someone like that. The other thing that we should keep in mind here is that trades can still happen in August.
Starting point is 00:35:35 But if you're trading for someone, they have to have not been on a major league roster this year. And obviously, if you're trading someone as well, that applies to them as well. So it's typically, you know, prospect for prospect trades or, you know, or maybe there's a veteran.
Starting point is 00:35:49 and that an organization has just had stashed for the whole year. We saw that with like Yuleiguriel last year. He got traded to the what, the Royals sometime in August. So it's possible. Playoff game for him. Yeah. I don't have names for you in that regard. But that's just something to keep in mind here that the mayors could still go outside
Starting point is 00:36:11 of the organization and add a reliever that isn't on the waiver wire. It's just someone that maybe they've scouted a little bit down of the miners and they like and they want to take a shot on. So we'll see. Yeah, I mean, we also should keep an eye on for later in this month, some of the more pricey relief pitchers, they might get placed on waivers by teams who are out of it and Seattle could claim one. But again, then they'd have to pay the rest of the money and how much money,
Starting point is 00:36:42 how much more money is ownership willing to spend? And are they willing to spend it on one month of a reliever who was just waived? like so yeah you know like Ryan Presley for example hasn't been good this year you're not going to claim them and then take on his about four or five million bucks that he was still owed he probably already cleared by now right yeah because you only get two days to
Starting point is 00:37:01 clear yeah so yeah now you can sign it for the pro rated minimum so if you want to try that fine whatever but yeah I mean there are some guys who we thought might get traded at the deadline some rental relievers they didn't get traded maybe they get placed on waivers and maybe Seattle can get one of those guys despite being low on the priority because, you know,
Starting point is 00:37:21 nobody else is willing to cut the three, four million dollar check. So maybe a guy like Rizel Iglesias, for example, although it seems likely that another team would claim him and pay him, but maybe. And so just keep an eye on the waiver wire every day. There's going to be some guys who are going to be placed on waivers to see if it, because the team wants to see if somebody will take the money off their hands. And, you know, hey, maybe watch the angels for, for for that regard. I love doing that. Decided to buy, quote, unquote, at the deadline and then got nothing and they're now like six or seven games below 500.
Starting point is 00:37:54 Classic Angels. I think they're only three, but whatever. They got Chafin and who else? Who was the other guy they got? Discarcia. Yeah. Yeah, maybe they released Chafin or something. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:38:08 Yeah. So we'll see. But yeah, so there's still options for the mayor is to go outside of the organization and it adds to the bullpen and maybe get better in the bullpen. Yeah, it's very much a tighter window to fit through. But yeah, there's still that possibility. There's still potential lovers to pull there. And, you know, obviously there's still like maybe Gregory Santos factors into this thing at some point. What are you actually going to get out of him?
Starting point is 00:38:33 Who knows? But I don't know. At this point, I'd probably rather take a shot on Gregory Santos than Casey Legamina. Yeah. All right. That's going to do it for a show. Thank you so much for joining us here on the lockdown airs podcast for Colby Panode. I'm Tadeng Gazales.
